Adding to the previous posts: KNX 1070AM, Los Angeles also repeats the 9-10
[removed] "Drama Hour" of OTR shows at 2:00 [removed] (Pacific) on the radio. The
shows can be heard ONLINE in Real or Windows Media Player the day AFTER the
shows are broadcast on the radio station. KNX lists the entire month of
program titles on their web site at [removed] "War Of The Worlds" is
scheduled for Halloween (Oct 31st) at 9 [removed]
The 50Kw KNX signal from towers in Torrance, CA (LA) is probably a bit
clearer in fringe areas during the early morning hours due to propagation.
Interesting to note that KNX also broadcasts the audio of "60 Minutes," the
news magazine from CBS-TV, every Sunday night on the radio.

Another belated one from Today's History and Birthdays, for 10/25 --
In 1937, radio's "Stella Dallas" made her debut on the NBC Red network;
the soap opera remained on NBC radio until 1955, with Anne Elstner in
the title role for the entire run.

The question of John's book has come up often. I suggest that if you cannot
find at your local library or book store you might try the web site listed
below. I have also listed some of the particulars of the book. I have read
it and recommend it to OTR buffs.

Subject: Benny&Jolson program in May, not Oct. of 47
Dear Irsael, I made a mistake on the date and your message has brought it to
my attention, thanks. The correct date is 5-18-47. I had played it in my car
and got mixed up on which side was which. Radio Memories has it as tape #5892
I think, and the description indicates Jolson is on the program. I bought it
years ago probably from Jean & Jerry Sheppard as #2384. Ted Davenport is one
of the digest posters and im sure he can give you more info about Radio
Memories and this tape if you want to ask him. Try this,
[removed] then look up
"catologues and flyers" and go to The Jack Benny Show. Hundreds are listed in
order of dates. Sorry for the misinformation. This is in reply to Israels
e-mail to me about a post i made sometime ago about this great Benny show
with Al Jolson. I lost Iraels e-mail address, sorry but others may also have
looked for the program with my incorrect date of 10-5-47.

Subject: Credits
I've got a question that's been nagging at me for a few years, so I'm finally
going to ask it. How was it decided what actors would be credited for
different shows? What I mean [removed] was listening to Casey, Crime
Photographer the other day and Tony Marvin stated that it starred Staats
Cotsworth as Casey, Jan Miner as Ann, and John Gibson as Ethelbert. Why
those three but not the actor who portrayed Inspector Logan? Logan is as big
a part and as important a part as Ethelbert. Just wondering.
Thanks in advance. Jay, I'm sorry to be missing the convention again.

Subject: The Green Hornet Question
I asked this question once but got no answer. Let me ask it again.
Can anyone tell me what episode of The Green Hornet did Britt Ried's
secretary Loran Case (Casey) found out Britt's secret identity? I heard that
in later years of the broadcast that a few people knew his identity a girl
reporter and I think the district attorney knew it, I am not for sure. Can
anyone confirm this?
Allen
I have wondered this myself. The only Green Hornet episode I've heard in
which Miss Case (and I believe her first name was Lenore) seemed to know
Britt Ried was the Hornet is "Road to Ruin." However, this knowledge is only
hinted at in a conversation between the two. They refer to the Hornet in the
third person, as if to say, "I know you're the Green Hornet and you know I
know, but neither of us can come out and say it."
My guess is there was no specific episode in which he told her or she found
out. There was an "understanding" between them.
Of course I might be entirely wrong! :-) I hope you get a more definitive
answer.

Subject: Seeking Philco radio pushbuttons
I remarked about my OTR hobby (habit?!) to a
co-worker the other day, and he asked if I
might know of a source for purchasing pushbuttons
for a Philco 39-36 (circa 1938) radio. I told
him that I'd post a message here to see if anyone
knew of a source for such parts. Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

Subject: Re:A new(s) subject
Just thought I'd bring up a new topic for discussion
on the mailing list. I'd like to know whatever information
anyone can provide regarding an OTR program named
"Bill Stern's Sports Newsreel". The few episodes which
I've heard of seem much like the Movietone newsreels
which were shown in theatres during the 30's, 40's,
and 50's (I think). Is this true? Many of the episodes
mentioned celebrities at their homes.
If it was just a newsreel format (which is what it sounded
like) why call it a 'sports newsreel'?

Subject: Radio Spirits New-Style Catalog
Bob Keller notes,
I don't want to get a Radio spirits flame war started, but I just
received their new catalog and I'm pretty impressed. <snip> with the look
and the layout, and think that this is a pretty smart try at
generating some interest in OTR from the outside of the [removed];<
What I found interesting was less the new features than what's missing of
the old features. For instance, no more "Fibber's Hall Closet" bargain
tapes/disks. No more grab-bag "when radio was chrome" single tapes.
And most interesting of all, no further mention of the Old Time Radio
Club of America and its Secret Decoder (much less its 5% discounts). No
more radio-related books.
Will this new-style catalog be complemented by the old-style catalog? Or
is this new format the shape of things to come? How about those who are
"lifetime members" of the OTRCA? (I confess that I am, because I wanted
one of their "decoders" for my cryptological collection: I doubt I'll
ever recover its costs in savings.) Enquiring minds, and all that.
One thing did make me chuckle, though. On the inside front cover,
there's a small box that says, "Health Warning! Radio Spirits has
determined that for your personal happiness and well-being, you should
keep at least one collection of Golden Age Radio shows in each of your
vehicles at all times." Since my car has neither tape nor CD player in
it, I guess it's a metaphysical thing, like a security blanket.
