A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: BBC's My Music
Fans of the long-running BBC radio comedy panel game My Music (1967-1994,
itself a spin-off of sorts of the even longer running series My Word) might
be interested to note that two of its stalwarts passed away this year. Steve
Race, the moderator (and a composer in his own right), died in June. And Ian
Wallace, who graced the show with his wonderful singing voice and his wit,
died in October. Apparently over the programme's 520 episodes, neither Race
nor Wallace missed a broadcast. I used to listen this syndicated on public
radio in the early 1980s, along with My Word. The Golden Age of British Radio
peaked a bit later than US Radio, but its icons are leaving us too.

Subject: Kay Thompson
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Monday, November 9, 2009, is the centennial of Kay Thompson (November 9,
1909-July 2, 1998), and, to commemorate this day, I would like to pay
tribute to her memory with the following rundown of her accomplishments:
Obscured by the sands of time, Kay Thompson was enormously influential in
radio, movies, and the world of entertainment in general. Kay was a major
radio vocalist, vocal arranger, choral director, and comedian in the 1930s.
Here is just a sampling of her many radio credits: She founded the HIT
PARADE with Lennie Hayton in 1935 on NBC. She was a regular singer on THE
BING
CROSBY-WOODBURY SOAP SHOW in 1933-34 on CBS. She formed a large women's
chorus for THE FRED WARING-FORD DEALERS SHOW in 1935 on CBS. She and her
Rhythm Singers were the stars of THE CHESTERFIELD RADIO SHOW (CBS, 1936) and
TUNE-UP TIME (CBS, 1939), both backed by Andre Kostelantetz and His
Orchestra.
She was the star of IT'S CHESTERFIELD TIME (CBS, 1937) with Hal Kemp and
His Orchestra. And, in 1941-42, she had her own show on CBS, KAY THOMPSON
FESTIVAL (later called KAY THOMPSON AND COMPANY).
During the late-1930s, she was married to the great jazz trombonist Jack
Jenney (of "Stardust" fame).
During the 1940s, her second husband was Bill Spier, director-producer of
the classic radio series SUSPENSE and THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE. In fact,
it was Kay who championed Howard Duff to be cast as Spade. And, for
SUSPENSE, she championed Ray Bradbury and helped pave the way for his very
first
radio adaptation for the series.
She was known for her explosive jazz and swing arrangements which led to
her job as the head of the vocal department at M-G-M in Hollywood (from
1943-1947), where she coached and arranged for Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra,
Lena
Horne, and all the musical stars -- and did the vocal arrangements for
such films as THE HARVEY GIRLS, ZIEGFELD FOLLIES, TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY,
IT
HAPPENED IN BROOKLYN, and GOOD NEWS.
She left M-G-M and Bill Spier in 1947 to form a nightclub act, "Kay
Thompson and the Williams Brothers," featuring her 19-year-old protege, Andy
Williams, and his three brothers (all of whom had been singing in her large
M-G-M choir). From 1947-1953, they became the highest paid nightclub act in
the
world and held all-time records at such clubs as Ciro's and Mocambo in
Hollywood, The Persian Room in New York, and Cafe de Paris in London.
After the act broke up, Kay wrote the #5 bestselling book of 1956,
"Eloise," about the little girl who lives at The Plaza Hotel in New York. It
spawned a Top 40 hit record, a Playhouse 90 adaptation seen by 25 million
people, two "Wonderful World of Disney" TV-movies starring Julie Andrews as
the
girl's Nanny, several sequel books, and a merchandising machine that is
still going strong today. A new feature film, ELOISE IN PARIS, is about to
start production starring Uma Thurman as Nanny.
In 1957, Kay starred in FUNNY FACE with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire in
which she played the flamboyant fashion magazine editor and sang the
opening number, "Think Pink!"
Among the milestones of Kay's surprisingly varied career was directing the
All-Star Inaugural Gala for President John F. Kennedy.
Additionally, Thompson mentored Andy Williams' rise to stardom as a solo
singer and wrote many songs that he recorded. (They were also lovers for
several years -- which Andy discusses openly in his new memoir.)
Kay was also the godmother of Liza Minnelli with whom she starred in Otto
Preminger's TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME, JUNIE MOON. She lived with Liza the
last 26 years of her life.
Liza Minnelli just recreated the "Kay Thompson and the Williams Brothers"
nightclub act for her Broadway show, LIZA'S AT THE PALACE, that won the
2009 Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event. The show has been filmed
for a PBS special, LIZA'S AT THE PALACE, that will air throughout the country
in late-November and December 2009.
Please pardon the shameless plug, but for those who would like to hear
Thompson in action, with the invaluable help of Michael Feinstein, I have
very
proudly produced and written the liner notes for a spectacular 3-CD
retrospective, "Think Pink! A Kay Thompson Party," released by the UK label,
Sepia Records, in September 2009. It has 75 tracks, many of which are rare
radio performances.
The CD set is available on [removed] at: (You can also sample free
excerpts of each track!)

We are very proud to have just gotten a very scholarly analysis (and rave)
from All Music Guide (where you can also listen to free samples of each

And, for those who are interested in reading more about Thompson, I am in
the process of completing a massive, decade-in-the-making biography that
will be published by Simon & Schuster in November 2010.
So, on Monday, November 9, 2009, please raise a toast to the centennial of
Miss Kay Thompson!
[removed] I'm always looking for extra-rare Thompson radio performances, photos,
or anything else. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me if you have anything
of interest.
Cheers!

There are some logs that show The Hypnotized Audience as airing June 5, 1938
and some show March 27, 1938 with the subsequent shows following each date.
Does anyone know why the discrepancy and if one date is more correct that the
other?

I also remember hearing Pearson referred to as "Drear POISON."
And I'm also uncomfortably reminded that during the later 1930s
"American" Fifth Columnist Anti-Semites used to describe Walter Winchell as
"Vulture Vinchell."

BBD&O was a real advertising firm that was probably the largest in the
world who's clients sponsored a great many of the top radio prpograms
check it out Wikipedia has good article on BBDO
I don't know, but the name reminds me of FDR's frequent taunt about
"Martin, Barton & Fish," referring to three isolationist and anti-New-
Deal members of Congress, during his 1940 re-election campaign. It
strikes me that if Jack Benny or Fred Allen ever did refer to BBDO by
its full name, it might have been intended to evoke FDR's line.
