I'd like to remind everyone that the National Lum and Abner Society is still
in existence, although we don't publish "The Jot 'Em Down Journal" anymore. In
fact, we're in Mena, Arkansas (hometown of Lauck and Goff - Lum and Abner)
this weekend for the annual Lum and Abner Festival.
I'm doing a program for the festival at 4:00 [removed] June 5, sketching characters
from my "Lum and Abner" comic strip and discussing L&A in general.
Saturday at 1:00 [removed], the NLAS is conducting a stage show at the Ouachita
Little Theater. The finale will be a new L&A script, in which the old fellows
meet Snuffy Smith (played by his cartoonist, John Rose) and Dick Tracy (played
by his writer, Mike Curtis).
This celebrates the 30th anniversary of our first NLAS Convention!B Donnie
Pitchford,
"Lum and Abner" Cartoonist

Hi Jerry,
In regard to the Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street, I know that
Willard Robison made two appearances on the program, one of which was June 30,
1940.
If you know the date of his other appearance on the program, I'd appreciate it
very much if you would send it to me.
Lastly, do you have either episode in your archive?
Thanks for your help.
Steve LaVere

Hello, OTR fans, I have been trying to determine the start / end dates of the
Dragnet comic strip that was syndicated in newspapers in conjunction with its
run on OTR and the first TV series. I have only been able to find a few scans
here and there of isolated examples, and I would like to compile a complete
collection. Also, I think there were at least a few comic books devoted to
Dragnet, but I have been unsuccessful in finding any of those. If you listers
know of any resources I might consult, I would appreciate it. Thank you! Damon

Subject: June Issue RADIO RECALL
The June 2014 issue of RADIO RECALL in full color just went out to PDF
subscribers; the B & W hard copy will be snail-mailed to other subscribers on
or about June 15th.
The leading article by Jim Cox, "As Schieffer Goes, the CBS Durable Heritage
is in Doubt", traces the high standards of that network's news from Murrow's
Boys in WW II to the retirement of Bob Schieffer. John Abbott follows with
his article on how radio helped rationing win the war, explaining the ration
books and radio's part in this important campaign.
Stewart Wright authors an interesting piece contrasting and comparing "Rocky
Jordan" with another similar radio series, "O'Hara" and concludes with his
research log material. Jason Hill's book on radio celebrities, "Life in the
Past Lane", based upon their radio interviews, is reviewed in fine fashion by
Mark Anderson.
A tribute to the recently deceased J. Fred MacDonald is included in this
issue; most of us recall him from his popular OTR book, "Don't Touch That
Dial." And if you wondered why "SOS" was ultimately chosen for ships'
distress calls, all will be explained in this issue.
The Metro Washington OTR Club has been invited by the Library of Congress to
perform two re-creations for the public in their Packard Campus Theatre this
summer; Michael Hayde discusses the plans for this stellar event.
Brief tributes are given regarding the recent deaths of Alice Anderson and
Dick Olday. All this, plus an OTR scramble quiz, Letters to the Editor, and
information about all upcoming OTR festivals and conventions.

Subject: ORCATS still meeting
Just a little info on the ORCATS:
ORCATS meet weekly on Sundays at 7AM-8AM CT on [removed] MHz LSB. ORCATS amateur
radio operators have been meeting on 40 meters continually for over 40 years.
Larry WA8DDN and Ken W9ZMR started in the early 70's and are still active. I
think about 8 of us are regular weekly. We're centered in the midwest but
have participants in the NE and South and wherever we can be heard or hear as
propagation moves from long to short during that part of the morning
generally.
Although I first joined in with the ORCATS in 2003 I haven't been regular
with them until about 1 year ago. I'm the youngest of the group @ 45yo and it
shows no signs of dissolving. I've never heard of "Illinois club Walden".
