Subject: deciding which mp3 recording level to use
Otr collectors have made considerable use of mp3 format to reduce file size
for recording on cd and thus how many shows can be put on a single disk.
The biggest concern is how various levels of mp3 file reduction might make
an impact on the sound as compared to the original.
Here is a way to know this before hand when recording your own files and to
use when considering getting files from others who use mp3 recordings of a
particular level. It is a computer based test to judge at what level mp3
levels become audible to you. Find the information about using it on your
computer at:
[removed]
You might be surprised how much file reduction can be applied before you
can hear a difference. Am radio was limited in its upper frequency
capacity and the various mp3 levels have their impact most on how much
upper frequencies are modified to reduce file size. Even with the very
best frequency range available on the radio networks many mp3 levels exceed
that range and can reduce file size without any audible changes.

Subject: Same story on Gunsmoke and Fort Laramie
Hello, I'm researching the fact that at least two, or maybe more, of the
scripts on Fort Laramie, were also done on Gunsmoke.
Here is a section of an article I wrote a while ago, "Produce It Again,
Sam: The Reuse of Scripts During the Golden Age of Radio." I believe it
answers your query. The article appears in somewhat different forms in three
OTR Newsletters and gives an overview of the surprisingly common practice of
script reuse during The Golden Age Of Radio.
". . . There was script sharing between GUNSMOKE and another Norman
Macdonnell produced and directed series, FORT LARAMIE.
Three scripts that Kathleen Hite wrote for FORT LARAMIE were reused
during GUNSMOKE'S 1959-60 season. The FORT LARAMIE scripts Assembly Line,
Woman At Horse Creek, and Hattie Pelfrey were produced on GUNSMOKE as Busted
Up Guns, Solomon River, and Nettie Sitton, respectively.
A fourth Hite FORT LARAMIE script, Little Girl, was not aired on that
series prior to its cancellation and became the GUNSMOKE episode Little
Girl.
In their transition from FORT LARAMIE to GUNSMOKE, all four scripts
received modifications of locale, characters, and dialog. . . ."
The second FORT LARAMIE script that features the Hattie Pelfrey
character, The Return of Hattie Pelfrey, was not produced on GUNSMOKE
Signing off for now,
Stewart Wright

Subject: Two Johnny$
I've mentioned before that I sometimes like to "see" the OTR actors
performing in other media forms. Yesterday on TCM "Birdman of Alcatraz" had
Edmond O'Brien as narrator and with about 2 minutes of "face time". In the
scene immediately prior to that, Robert Bailey (uncredited and otherwise
known as Bob Bailey) was shown playing the part of a reporter. Two Johnny
Dollars within 2 minutes!
The next program to air, "Shane", started Van Heflin. I believe that he was
the orginal Phil Marlowe prior to Gerald Mohr. Alan Ladd of "Box 13" fame
was also part of the cast.
It's nice to see the faces behind the voices from time to time and to see if
they act with their body's as well as they do with their voices.
Just an alert in case anyone is curious: I believe that I saw that
"Operation Petticoat" is scheduled to run on AMC this month. Virgina Gregg
(YTJD and DRAGNET among others) has a good part in this flick. She is one of
the nurses.

cartoon expert on this list such as Rodney Bowcock will correct me if I'm
wrong, but I believe "Hush
My Mouse" was the last W-B theatrical cartoon to feature the Chuck
Jones-created "Sniffles," the
insufferably cutesie mouse who did continue to be featured in "Loonet Tunes"
comic books.
Sniffles and OTR did figure into an earlier Christmas-themed cartoon in which
he's forcing himself to
stay awake in order to see Santa Claus. At one point, Sniffles is listening to
some sort of radio lullabye
purveyor of the time evocative of Ireene Wicker, the "Singing Lady."
However, I've forgotten the name of THIS cartoon.

At 12:18 PM 3/11/2007, Jack French wrote:
Today I was looking for the only surviving episode of "Maudie's Diary"
which Jay Hickerson's "Ultimate Guide" says is in the possession of
Steve Lewis. So I emailed Steve Lewis, a regular poster on this Digest,
to request a copy. "You've got the wrong Steve Lewis" he responded.
Turns out he's in NJ and the one I need to contact is in CT.
I'm the Steve Lewis in CT and you may not believe this, but when I had this
message on the screen, I immediately took out my box of index cards for the
OTR shows I have and was searching through it for Maudie's Diary when the
phone rang.
I answered it, and it was Jack French calling. I said, Jack, you may not
believe this, but your message is here on the screen and I'm looking for
Maudie's Diary for you right now.
Jack had found my number through Jay Hickerson, who I believe knows
everyone involved with OTR.
Now I do have the show, and I've listened to it. It's probably a pilot
episode, and Jack agrees, but I don't have an index card for it, which
means I'm going to have to do a search through my trading catalog, where
everything is listed reel by reel with their contents, and not by the title
of the show. It should turn up eventually, although I know Jack would
prefer it sooner rather than [removed]
Yes, reels, not cassettes. Maybe MP3's, some day.

Bhob commented about Wikipedia:
OTR research volunteers are needed to insert corrections and
additions to these encyclopedic profiles and program pages, as
WikiProject Radio expands into the definitive hyperlinked database of
OTR information.
If anyone donates info, please cite the source. Citing the source (such as
TIME magazine and the issue date) is most valuable, and prevent inaccuracy.
Don't use encyclopedias unless the specific fact being posted on Wikipedia
is cited in the encyclopedia because even books like Dunning's and such have
errors and we don't need to see them repeated.
As of last year on [removed], the movie PSYCHO (Hitchcock's version)
received a mention by the imdb folks to please no longer submit information
as too many revisions, corrections and additional info was cropping up over
and over. Example: One week Saul Bass was listed as the man who designed
the opening credits, and the next week Patricia Hitchcock was cited as the
person responsible, and the week after Saul Bass returned. I don't want to
deter people from posting information for Wikipedia, but please make sure
the info is correct.
Now if only they will correct the statement that Kato's nationality changed
from Japanese to Filipino because of Pearl Harbor and the [removed]' entry into
the war when it's been proven that he was Filipino way before Dec. '41.

The Inner Sanctum episode "Appointment With Death" which was mentioned in
the Digest is close but not acurate. The episode was "The Scream." Himan
Brown did reuse plots and scripts, retitling them, but this was not the
case, but I can understand the confusion.
