Hi

this is in reference to Paul Urbahns request for 'Radio announcers' who had
hit records.
Ironically, I've been working on an article about radio
announcers/hosts/personalities
who have had hit songs on the Billboard music [removed]'s just a
sampling,Paul to get you in the groove.
In compiling the list, I was quite surprised at some of the findings. My
own radio career of 41 years, gave me the opportunity to play many of the hit
songs mentioned and interview the
artists. At the time, little did I realize how many music stars got their
start on the radio.

*BILL HALEY, who is credited with having the FIRST Rock and Roll, #1 hit of
the rock era with 'ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK' in July 1955, was on the air at WPWA
in Chester, PA when he formed a rock group.

*TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD worked at radio stations in San Bernadino, CA and
Reno, NV.
Actually got his big break as a dee-jay on KXLA in Pasadena. In the 1950's,
he station became one of America's biggest Top-40 stations, upon changing it's
 call letters to KRLA.
Ernie's biggest hit, a #1 song for seven weeks in a row in November 1955,
you load 'SIXTEEN TONS' and what do you get. A song still used today in
commercial advertising.

*JIM LOWE, one time New York radio personality, hit the top of the charts in
1957 with a catchy hit song called 'GREEN DOOR.'

*JAPE RICHARDSON, who shortened his first name to [removed] when on the air as a
dee-jay at KTRM in Beaumont, Texas, found national fame as 'THE BIG BOPPER,'
with 'CHANTILLY LACE,' a hit song which got as high as #3 in November 1958.
Sadly, three months later, [removed] died in a plane crash, along with BUDDY HOLLY
and RITCHIE VALENS, a date known as 'the day the music died, February 3rd
1959.

*JOHNNY HORTON, had a #1 hit in June 1959 with 'THE BATTLE of NEW ORLEANS.'
In 1950, John Gale Horton had his own show on KXLA in Pasadena, CA. A year
later, he was signed to a regular spot on the 'LOUISIANA HAYRIDE' on KWKH
Radio in Shreveport, LA.

*ROY ORBISON, who had so many hit songs, including the #1 hit-'RUNNING
SCARED' in June 1961 got his start in radio. At age 8, little Roy Kelton
Orbison
was playing tunes and singin' some of his own, every Sunday morning on KVWC in
Kermit, Texas. At 13, Roy formed his own group, the Wink Westerners, with
members of his high school band.

*JIMMY DEAN, with his hit song,'BIG BAD JOHN' held on to the Number one spot
for five weeks in a row in November 1961. Jimmy also got his start on the
radio, playing country music at WARL in Arlington, Virginia after his
discharge
from the Air Force. His radio work led to a job with the CBS Radio Network
in 1958.

*MARTY ROBBINS, with his number one hit song 'EL PASO' in January 1960. He
and his band were on the air at KPHO in Phoenix. Eventually, Marty joined
WSM Radio's 'Grand Ole Opry,' and became a regular for four decades.

*LLOYD PRICE, with his hit 'STAGGER LEE' that was #1 for 4 consecutive weeks
in February 1959,as a sophomore in high school got a job playing music on
WBOK in New Orleans.

There are many other music stars, who began their careers on the radio.
You'll have to read my article to find out [removed](oh, what a cheap
plug---sorry!!) Til then' as the song goes,
here's a few more, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Rex Allen (Son, don't go near the
indians) Tex Ritter (you mentioned) and Sheb Wooley of 'Purple People Eater'
fame.

and the artists and hits keep on spinning!!

Best regards

Joe Martelle

The only bio I found was at Yahoo and it said that her father was President

SHAME, SHAME ON [removed] COULD I FORGET MY PAL, RICK DEES and his
# 1 hit song from October [removed]'DISCO DUCK .'
Many musical stars with #1 songs to their credit have their roots in radio
and began their careers on the air. However, Rick Dees managed to top Billbo
ard's Hot 100 while working full-time as a morning radio personality in
Memphis at WMPS. Rick later moved to KIIS-FM in Los Angeles, where he was
one of
LA's most popular and top rated personalities for years, before being eased
out a couple of years ago by the young dude, Ryan Seacrest, host of FOX-TV's
highly rated, American Idol.

My apologies to Rick for inadvertently excluding him from my original list,
mainly because
his song, 'Disco Duck' isn't located at the top of my musical memory file.

Subject: KNX seeks Columbia Square airchecks

Hi all!

As some of you may know, KNX radio in Hollywood will soon move out of its
Columbia Square offices and studios, after 67 years! This is the longest
any Los Angeles radio station has been broadcasting from studio location.
KNX will depart Columbia Square and move in with other Infinity-owned radio
stations, including the city's other all-news station, KFWB.

On the [removed] Web site today, I saw this from KNX:

Need Airchecks from Columbia Square. KNX's Michael Linder is producing a
half-hour special which airs Friday, August 12th as the station begins its
countdown to the switchover to its new Miracle Mile facilities and departs
Columbia Square. Mike is searching for historic airchecks from KNX's long
Columbia Square history, including major news events, audio from the early
days of the CBS all-news format, and clips from local entertainment and
deejay shows from the 50s and 60s. All donations would be greatly
appreciated. Contact: radio@[removed]
I thought some of you with KNX/CBS airchecks from 1938 onward might want to
help out for this historic, sad good-bye to Columbia Square from KNX. Is
there a recording of KNX/CBS' first broadcast for the opening or dedication
of Columbia Square?

Subject: OTR Books - FYI

Just passing on some info to those who might be interested.

I recently purchased 'Best Broadcasts of 1938-39' by Max Wylie, published
1939. I noticed that there are a number of used copies available as well
as used copies of 'Best Broadcasts of 1939-40' and 'Best Broadcasts of
1940-41' by the same author. The prices for 1938-39 and 1939-40 start at
about $7. The 1940-41 book starts at about $20. Don't know why it's so
high.

More info on the 1938-39 book from the DJ: 'This anthology contains
outstanding radio broadcasts which were heard in America between January 1,
1938 and July 1, 1939. Thirty-two separate programs of every conceivable
sort (originals, adaptations, comedy sketches, variety shows, news reports,
children's programs, talks, public discussions, dramatic plays, etc.) have
been reprinted in their 'as broadcast' [removed]'

Basically, awards were given in 32 categories. Unfortunately radio files
of many of the 'winners' don't seem to be in circulation (except in
this/these books in their broadcast version script)

Wylie is known for his book 'Radio Writing' (also available) and was
Director of Script and Continuity at CBS. Despite his job at CBS his
selections appear to be impartial and his introductory discussions of each
program are very informative.

I doubt it very much since Allison Janney is from the city of my current
residence - Dayton, Ohio. I see local articles occasionally when she
returns home and her father is/was (I believe he died or has been ill)
something like a lawyer or some such - nothing to do with acting. None
of the articles never mentioned any connections, though there could be a
distant relationship.

Needless, no direct connection.

Subject: Mystery Is My Hobby

Hi all,

While it's no classic, I did find an entertaining
relatively obscure mystery show - Mystery Is My Hobby.
It might not be everyones' cup of tea, but it's a
pleasant time-filler. Might anyone know where to get
the best-sounding copies? Like Manhunt, it's rather
hard to find in real lo-gen.

You know what else is hard to find? Local OTR shows -
I'd love to get my hands on some Cincinnati OTR (other
than Moon River), or even other cities.

Small WVXU OTR update; according to their schedule,
morning OTR has been replaced by the second hour of
the Dianne Rheam Show (even the Easy Aces is more
entertaining than that), and the weekend Big Broadcast
is now replaced by something along the lines of Blues?
show (the title had blue in it). So much for one of
the premier NPR stations in the nation.

Hi everyone,

Paul Uhrbans asked about Radio Announcers/ DJs who also did recordings. A
few come to mind (without too much research): Wink Martindale "Deck of

Marvin Miller, Don Wilson: Capitol records, Alexander Scourby "The Bible",
Art Gilmore, Jackson Beck, Casey Kasem, Hudson & Landry and others, I'm
sure.
(Here we go again, Charlie!!!)
Re "This is Your Life": I seem to recall that singer Lillian Roth was also
told beforehand that she was to be the subject of a show; her alcoholic
story she wanted told. On a personal note, on Wednesday night, August 1st,
1956, "This is your Life: Roy Rogers" (a re-run) was the first show I taped
on my brand-new Pentron recorder. (I know, it wasn't OTR, but it got me
started!).
