Thanks for that info, Bill you always have great stuff

Subject: GUNSMOKE EPISODE
Regarding the Gunsmoke question by Barbara Watkins in OTR Digest #84. The
episode in question is "CHESTER'S HANGING" from 12 Feb 1955. The robber and
murderer played by Paul Dubov appears to be called Jim Candow (or Kandow).
Clayton Post is Jack Haney and James Nusser plays Lee Binders.

Thanks to Sean Dougherty for posting the reviews of Frank Gorshin's
play. I've been wondering for some time when George began using "Say
goodnight, Gracie" as his parting shot - I haven't heard him use it on
any shows from the B&A sitcom era (1942-1950). Can anyone fill me in?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Jack Benny/Pearl Harbor
When I did research on the Pearl Harbor broadcasts at the Library of
Congress, here is what I found:
These were the times for bulletins that went out over the NBC net:
7:01:03 - 7:01:53 (obviously before the actual start of the program) This
was not over the net.
7:21:05 - 7:21:36 - I'd have to listen to my tape to determine what
specifically was on his program at this point.
7:27:22 - 7:28:19 At the end of the program. This was not over the net.
What George Aust heard on his Redmond Nostalgia is, as he says, a local
bulletin that did not go out over the net. From NYC there were two local
bulletins via WEAF.
I listened to the tape - mine is originally from Radio Yesteryear - the
Memovox recording, and it is excellent sound considering it was memovox, so
I am not sure what George was listening to that sounded so terrible (or his
standards are much much higher than mine). The bulletin I refer to above at
7:21:05 is right after the Jekyl/Hyde play that Don Wilson supposedly
wrote. Jack makes a joke about Don, then says "Play [removed]" As the band
starts in, the sound fades and the bulletin comes on: "Another war bulletin
- Shanghai - the Japanese took over the American Shanghai Power and Light
Company, this morning. A bulletin from New York - the Japanese News Agency
broadcast [removed]" the announcer returns us to Hollywood where the band
is still playing.

Well, Frank Nelson's appearances on the Benny show go all the way back to
June 1, 1934. He played various characters over time, including football
announcers, sound man Virgil Reimer, etc.
You mean that there really wasn't a sound-effects man named Virgil Reimer?

Is there a user-friendly program to convert Standard CDs to an MP3 format?
Something that is free/shareware? Or one that could be sampled and tested
before having to buy it?
You can get a free version of Musicmatch Jukebox that includes limited
functionality. It is supposed to permit "ripping" CDs to MP3. Years ago there
were
limitations on bit rate and sample rate with the free version, but it appears
that is no longer the case. MMJ provides the superior Fraunhofer MP3
encoder--they are the German firm that owns the patents for MP3. It's the
best. There is
a learning curve to use it well.

The one you described is the only one I've ever encountered. And like I said
before, I'm pretty convinced that it is the KFI feed, based on listening to
multiple shows on either side of it that are definitely from the KFI feed.

Subject: Re: Sherlock Holmes and The Final Problem
Irene Heinstein noted how inaccurate the episode dating of the early
Sherlock Holmes programs:
This, of course illustrates one of the big problems of collecting OTR.
Someone finds a date, might not really be capable of confirming it,
others copy the file and the information, correct or not, goes out and
becomes considered as authoritative. This is mostly true of the older,
harder to find programs such as early Sherlock Holmes.
Remember that Elizabeth mentioned that these 1932-33 G. Washington
sponsored Sherlock Holmes programs were NBC programs extension spotted via
RCA Victor transcriptions. So there are multiple dates of when the
programs were aired. There were actual live dates of the original NBC
programs, and this is the date that should be the only one used. But the
actual discs might have dates written on the labels or sleeves of when the
individual stations aired the disc--and different sets might have different
air dates. It is extremely doubtful that the original live NBC date would
have been indicated on the labels but this could have been found by
research. So one person lists the NBC date, while another person lists the
pencilled local air date.
Of course, NEITHER person bothered to note the matrix number of the RCA
Victor transcriptions which can often be used by record collectors or
discographers to discover the original recording dates. Please folks, if
you have access to original discs, don't forget to note all of the info of
this type. Otherwise it is like ripping the title page out of a book.
Those numbers are unique to that specific recording. And occasionally, if
a definitive date can be found for one program and its matching matrix
number, this info can be used to help date other programs in different
series with nearby numbers.

The Episode was titled "Chester's Hanging" and aired February 12, 1953.
Jim Candow is the spelling for the prisoner. Guest stars were James Nusser,
Paul DuBov, Clayton Post, and Joe Cranston.
When it was presented in the TV version the character name changed to Jim
Cando. Sam Edwards played the part of Lee Binders in that version from May
10, 1958.

Subject: Virginia Greg on Streets of San Francisco
I watched a "Streets of San Francisco" rerun on television yesterday and it
prominently featured radio legend Virginia Greg. She played a sick widow
over whose princely net worth of $20,000 several other characters were
scheming over. The main guest star of the episode was "Brady Bunch" alumni
Robert Reed.
There was another major part in the episode played by a pharmacist who's
voice was very familiar but the credits rolled too quickly for me to catch it.
Still, it was very cool to see Ms. Greg on screen.
