X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Don Wilson and Phil Harris used their real names. We know Jack Benny
never usd his real
name as did Mary Livingston so that still doesn't explain why Eddie
Anderson
was always referred to as Rochester.
I think the argument was that Don Wilson and Phil Harris basically played
"characters" with their real names. They were basically ID'ed the same way
in the open they were identified within the program by other characters.
I know that's not much of an explanation, but I'm unaware (Laura Leff, call
me out of I'm wrong!) of say, Frank Nelson, Bea Benederet or Mel Blanc
ever being credited on the show by their real or character names. Not sure
what was up with that but I suspect it was related.

I remember when Cheerioats became Cheerios; my mother told me they made the
boxes smaller, and the longer name wouldn't fit. Of course, I believed her!
As for Pep, I tried it once - it was terrible. Back then, of course, there
were no sweetened cereals!

Subject: The Shadow and Welles
Someone commented the other day about the Collins novel "The War of the
Worlds Novel." We had mentioned that over Radio Once More
during the recent special War of the Worlds broadcast, thinking some radio
listeners might find that of interest. There is a mention
about having Welles star in a big screen movie version and there is a bit of
truth to that factoid, though years later from when
the novel was set. Years after his departure from radio's The Shadow, in the
fall of 1947, hard up for money,
struggling with a nasty divorce from wife Rita Hayworth and fine-tuning his
recent project, MACBETH, Orson Welles toyed with
the idea of producing and directing a motion picture in England based on The
Shadow. Screenwriter Charles Lederer completed
a script. After failing to convince at least two American producers to fund
the project and unable to sign any contracts with
Street & Smith, Welles chose to film OTHELLO and spent no further time
working on bringing The Shadow to the big screen. Problem
was, Welles could not get permission from Street & Smith if he begged on his
knees because they had already licensed the
screen rights to Monogram Studios months before, for a six-movie contract
(only three movies were ultimately produced). Lederer
had come up with clever ideas to incorporate a few of the pulp hero's
personalities and trademarks into the film, while keeping
it faithful to the radio series -- a cross between both genres.
In 1939, Columbia Pictures wanted to do a cliffhanger serial (also known as a
chapter play) based on THE SHADOW and they had to
secure permission from Street & Smith. Production was delayed because of
ownership rights which had to be clarified. Seems the Glen
Alden Coal Company (Blue Coal) felt they owned the rights to the program and
it took a few months to straighten out who exactly
had the rights to license the property for cinema. Because it took a few
months to clear the legalities, John Carradine, who was
originally slated for the role of Lamont Cranston, was replaced by Victor Jory.
Two years after the serial, there was an attempt to bring THE SHADOW to
Broadway. The July 30, 1942, issue of Radio Daily reported:
"Dramatic rights to The Shadow, MBS program sponsored by [removed];W. Coal Co.,
have been acquired from Street & Smith, publishers,
by Lew Cantor and Hugh Skelley, who plan to produce the vehicle as a stage
play."
The August 29, 1942, edition of the New York Times reported: "Lew Cantor and
Hugh Skelley, who plan to produce a dramatization
of the radio serial, The Shadow, have asked the authors to write the play so
that all the scenery will be drapes that can be
shipped in trunks. This will solve transportation problems for the producers,
baggage cars being hard to find these days."
Apparently, the play was never produced.
The same person also remarked: Yesterday while listening to few episodes of
The Lone Ranger from 1938 I came
across something I thought kind of interesting. During the musical bridge
between the first act and the second act
instead of hearing the usual piece of classical music normally heard I heard
Omphale's Spinning Wheel by
Saint-Saens--The theme music for The Shadow! I have to admit a found that a
bit disconcerting and almost half
expected to hear Johnstone or Morrison giving the "Who knows what evil lurks
in the hearts of men" opening.
This was mentioned in Reginald Jones' book about THE MASKED MAN'S MUSIC (now
out of print and one of the four best reads last
year). I know it was used during the months of April/May of 1938. Could have
been used other times, but primarily during those
two months. Long story short, they were experimenting with other music on
records and was also preparing to use the music composed
for the Republic Studios cliffhanger serial. It's still a mystery why they
did it since The Shadow was heard over Detroit during
the Blue Coal months and the Goodrich syndication, other than the technicians
did not know that music was the theme of another
radio thriller.
Omphale's Spinning Wheel is featured in the soundtrack to the MGM 1922
classic, THE MAGICIAN. The Turner Classic Movies restoration
is now available through the Warner Archive and features music credited to
Robert Isreal, but almost everything was public domain
classical pieces, hence why you can hear The Shadow theme in the soundtrack.
By the way, not for the sake of wanting to hear that
musical piece, but THE MAGICIAN was one of the best silent films I've seen
this year, and I've seen about 50 since January. Recommended.

Subject: Lone Ranger using The Shadow's music
The question in the last digest about why The Lone Ranger radio program using
the music from Omphale's Spinning Wheel (Saint-Saens) for a bridge between
acts one and two can be answered as follows. In 1938, when the particular
program cited aired, station WXYZ in Detroit, which broadcast the program,
had not yet settled on a specific library of musical cues for the Ranger. At
that time, they used whatever theme music they could find in their library
that seemed suitable. The cue in question, which was also used as The
Shadow's theme, was very dramatic and set the mood. Seigfried's Rhine
Journey was another selection sometimes used between acts. Since both were
in the public domain, there was no issue about copyright infringement. The
only confusion would have been in the mind of the listener.
A complete discussion of this can be found in Reginald Jones Jr.'s book, "The
Mystery of the Masked Man's Music", published some years ago by Scarecrow
Press.
