Karl Tiedemann wrote about a series "THE AUTHOR MEETS THE CRITICS". I found

Subject: Neglected Series
It's not that television has not offered a great deal of memorable content,
probably more than most human beings could view in one lifetime.
But radio of the past, while best known for, let's say, "Gunsmoke" and
"Dragnet," also gave us (sans commercials or any marketing whatsoever)
something more.
This radio gifting (it seems that the broadcasters truly appreciated how WE
permitted them to have space on the airwaves and we the public were happy to
buy receivers) was emulated for awhile by noncommercial television,
particularly "educational television" and then "public television," until it
was discovered that much more money could be directed to them if they gave US
more Lawrence Welk and far less opera.
Thus, public television does present "Frontline," but most of its attention
seems to focus on high rating grabbers from England.
Anyway, whether it was merely because there were sustaining time slots which
needed to be filled with SOMETHING, or maybe the radio networks and certain
local stations genuinely wanted to broadcast more than entertainment and
news, radio did wonders to inform, enlighten, stimulate, educate the
audiences. I was fortunate for this companion in my childhood, when my
family could not dream of owning a car, but we had several radios.

Not sure if this subject has been explored before but I've put up a page of
info / links concerning the 1940 Census and Old Time Radio:
< [removed] >
The 1940 Census being on-line and searchable is quite interesting, not only
for old time radio but for your family as well. I was able to find out that
in 1940 my grandmother was the head of household of 4, including a boarder,
her mother and a sister that I had never heard of before.
