Subject: Inspector West

I recently discovered a program that I enjoy immensely. It's a BBC
production of Inspector West programs from the BBC aired in the 1960's.
These programs are adaptations of novels by John Creasey. Excellent
productions - acting, sound effects. And, something I personally like, these
are short serials. I have three of them and two are six part series and one
is an eight part series. I listen to them in my car and look forward to the
next chapter. Wish there were more.

 From Those Were The Days

5/15

1933 - Irna Phillips, an NBC Blue network program-features writer,
starred in the role of Mother Moran in the radio program, "Today's
Children", which was heard for the first time this day.

5/17

1938 - The NBC Blue network presented "Information Please" for the first
time. The show was moderated by Clifton Fadiman.

1939 - The Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, NY was the scene of a
memorable dual-network radio broadcast of Glenn Miller and his
orchestra. Both NBC and Mutual carried the event, which was attended by
1,800 people in the casino ballroom.

5/18

1942 - "David Harding, Counterspy" was heard on the NBC Blue network for
the first time. The program enjoyed a long run on radio, lasting for 15
years.

5/19

1921 - The first opera presented in its entirety over the radio was
broadcast by 9ZAF in Denver, CO. The opera, "Martha", aired from the
Denver Auditorium.

5/20

1933 - "Charlie Chan" was heard for the final time on the NBC Blue radio
network after only six months on the air. Not to worry. Several revivals
of the Chinese detective were on the air for years later ...

Subject: Hiroshima

Hello, OTRers --
With President Obama's trip to Hiroshima coming up soon, I was reminded of a
radio program I heard years ago about an American military base close enough
to the first atomic blast that one of the officers who was looking through
venetian blinds at the blast had his face burned with a series of
third-degree burns in a series of horizontal lines on his face, due to the
heat of the blast. I think there was a movie star associated with it; Dana
Andrews or maybe Gregory Peck. Does anyone remember anything about this
program? I was surprised at the time that we had any military personnel that
close to the bomb blast, and no one I've talked to had any idea we had a
military installation there; maybe on one of the nearby islands. I'd
appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks,
Jan Bach

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 209

BATTLE OF THE BARITONES - AN EDDIE HUBBARD SPECIAL

This Classics & Curios show is a rebroadcast of one of Eddie Hubbard's
"Battle of the Baritones" Specials and features great singers like Bing
Crosby, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Tony Martin, Dick Haymes, Robert
Goulet, Johnny Desmond, Al Martino, Vic Damone, Jerry Vale, and Nat Cole
(who curiously actually performs after the "official competition" has
concluded and Eddie is filling out the time slot).

Songs include "Summer Sounds," "Play Me Hearts and Flowers," "Far Away
Places," "The Last Dance," "Have You Looked into Your Heart," "Please
Forgive Me," "Body and Soul," and "The Very Thought of You." There is
also Perry Como's beautiful rendition of "You Are So Beautiful (to Me)"
with its lyric "You are everything I hope for, everything I need," which
is a song I still often try to sing to my bride of 53 years.

One gal singer from the fifties somehow sneaks in near the end - Gale
Storm, singing her 1956 hit recording of "Ivory Tower." The final
recording also is a "filller" and is a personal favorite -a 1954 Lex
Baxter recording popular during my youth: the award winning movie theme
"The High and the Mighty."

Of course, with the time constraints on Eddie's radio show he could only
play a few recordings, so many fine baritones are missing from this
broadcast. Baritones like, Buddy Clark, Frankie Laine, Andy Russell,
Rudy Vallee, Don Cornel, Elvis Presley, Ray Eberle, Bob Eberle/y/ and
many more are reluctantly set aside, perhaps for a later "Battle" broadcast.

As always, many thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for expert
remastering of the original studio tape for rebroadcast. .
