I want to thank Israel Colon for his defense of Mr. Keen. I must be listening
to Mr. Keen with my childhood ears also because I really like the show! It's
like putting on a pair of old shows. They may not look like much but they're
oh so comfortable. And I really hope that before I die someone can shake loose
that stack of Mr. Chameleon programs tucked away in an Archive. I know my
childhood ears will enjoy those just as much. And I know that if you don't
like Mr. Keen, you won't like Mr. Chameleon either.

Israel wrote:
When I listen to Mr. Keen today I still hear him with my childhood ears.
Friends, Romans, Israel, lend me your ears.
And Dan wrote
Some of us I'm thinking are taking Mr. Keen, and maybe a few more shows
much to serious.
Something that's clearly "camp" or however they might have termed
it then (a farce, parody, satire, if meant for adults) is one
thing, but we're talking about a network running this in prime
time in the medium's mature years -- scripts, overall, with
childish plots and dialogue that was seriously stamped out
according to the shallow, outdated Hummert template.
As I indicated, I was eating it up as a kid, too ... and yes,
it's great also as an adult, if you only half-way listen or
you're in the mood for some silliness (sort of like watching The
Beverly Hillbillies).
And I guess involved plots can go too far, too. As a kid, I had
trouble following the explanations at the end of the Perry Mason
programs, you know, when Perry, Della and Paul got together and
rattled off characters' names and what they did and their
motives. I was watching one not long ago - still didn't get it.
Somewhere between childhood and now, I'm sure my brain cells
reached their peak. Too bad I wasn't watching then.

I get a kick out of Mr. Keen the same way I do out of old Abbott & Costello
movies, Charlie Chan flicks, or the Green Hornet. Not high art, but
entertainment.
The tag line my wife and I have for Mr. Keen is: "Mr. Keen, Tracers of Lost,
But Usually Dead Persons."
To each his own, to enjoy or dislike!

I am looking for a copy of the radio script to "An Occurrence at Owl Creek
Bridge" from any radio production (ESCAPE, SUSPENSE, etc.). After consulting
my collection and that of a few friends, I'm coming up empty-handed. Anyone
have a copy or know where I can get one?

Subject: Mr. Keen

As any OTR collectors knows or soon learns Mr. Keen, Hearthstone of the Death
Squad,Mr. Chameleon and dozens of sop operas were all the products of the
Frank and Ann Hummert radio factory Arrow Productions. All of their shows
that I have or have heard bear the same type of simplistic dialog and
character range. On the generous side you could say that the shows were easy
to follow, designed that the listener didn't really have to give the story
his or her full attention. Having recently heard several episodes of
Hearthstone back to back I had the feeling that the Hummerts really believed
in the saying that all radio should be geared to the 12 year old mind.
However, that said, it still doesn't explain the popularity of the stable of
productions. Sooner or later even a 12 year old gets bored with the same
thing over and over. Why then did a show like Mr. Keen thrive? Hard to say
from a 2008 perspective, if you heard a Keen show from 1945 and then one from
1952 virtually
nothing has changed in the script structure and execution. I have no real
answer, I leave that up to Jack French, Jim Cox or Martin Grams, all I can
say is I will never again listen to more then one or two episodes of a
Hummert mystery a week again. By the time I'd finished the Hearthstone
marathon I felt as if I needed to a take a basic writing course again.

Subject: Conventions not wanted here
The SPERDVAC members who voted do NOT want a convention.
That is the only honest conclusion that can be made from the results of the
election yesterday for the Board of Directors of SPERDVAC.
Last year four members ran for the board on the platform
that they would put on a convention for SPERDVAC. All four were elected. They
were
true to their word. That convention will take place on the first weekend of
May.
This year all four of those directors, Frank Bresee, Jim Harmon, Walden Hughes
and Don Aston, came in dead last. Only Frank was reelected because ten people
ran
for the board and there were seven positions. He received 45 fewer votes than
the 6th person.
As I said, the only honest conclusion that can be drawn is
that the vast majority of SPERDVAC members do not want to support a convention.

Are there any OTR conventions planned for the West coast in 2008. And if
you were going to go to just one convention on the east coast which would it
be; Cincinnati, Mid-Atlantic in Maryland, Newark New Jersey or any othe
convention that I am unaware of. Thanks for your time. I'm new at this and
am
looking for your expertise.

Is there any old time radio episodes about mermaids? I only came across
Suspense "Deep Deep is my Love" 4/26/59 and Lux Radio Theatre "Mr. Peabody
and the
Mermaid" 9/6/48. Is there any readers who knows of any radio episodes that
had a mermaid theme.
