Frank McGurn, noting a friend of his was,

a collector of many things besides OTR. Among the
item he colllected BIG LITTLE books

There's an interesting connection between OTR and BLBs (meaning both Big
Little Books and Better Little Books). In some cases, OTR programs were
"novelized" in BLBs. Two Captain Midnight adventures were novelized by
R. R. Winterbotham: Captain Midnight and the Secret Squadron and Captain
Midnight ... vs the Terror of the Orient. These were from the 1941 and
1942 seasons respectively.

Some Jack Armstrong adventures were given the same treatment: Jack
Armstrong and the Ivory Treasure and Jack Armstrong and the Mystery of
the Iron Key.

Not having been able to listen to all the shows when they were broadcast,
and because some of the shows were broadcast before I was born, I suspect
that there were other novelized radio broadcasts to be found in BLBs.

In addition to BLBs, the publisher, Whitman, also produced a series of
"books for boys" and "books for girls," each aimed primarily at
middle-school children. Some of these were also adaptations from OTR
scripts.

Since most or all of the episodes of these shows are not in circulation,
in some cases, the Whitman books are the only surviving remnants of the
shows they represented.

However, a caution: there were other BLBs of OTR characters that were not
derived from the radio show. For instance, there are two Captain
Midnight titles that were independent of the radio program (neither
bylined by Winterbotham).

Hi Gang:

I just realised that this coming August 7th (a Monday this year) will mark
Stan Freberg's eightieth birthday. According to Wikipedia, he was born
"Stanley Victor Freberg" in Los Angeles on August 7th, 1926. I'm sure there
are many others reading the Digest, like myself, who would very much like to
send along birthday greetings.

Is there a viable address (corporate? snail-mail? "When Radio Was"/Radio
Spirits? web-?) where we can all send our wishes in an expeditious manner?
There's only about a week left to execute this.

Derek Tague,
Mayor of Etherville
