In an ad for Martin Grams book on Inner Sanctum is mention of something I
had heard before. There were two sounds copyrighted, the squeking door and
another. Does anyone know the other? I assume it was from the otr era
also.

I might be mistaken, but wasn't OTR radio singer Connie Haines (who
just recently passed away at age 87) the actress who was credited as Gertie
the receptionist on the TV version of "Perry Mason"? (I don't think she had
a
role on the OTR version of "Perry Mason", however. She wasn't on screen
much, but her voice was only heard over the office intercom. She was briefly
on
screen and, as I recall, was very attractive and blonde. This is based on
what I
recall and what others have told me.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Unto the third generation
In a local store today I spied -- and bought -- a bottle of liquid Osydol in
an unfamilarly-labeled plastic bottle. It certainly wasn't the one I've
been accustomed to seeing and buying the last half-dozen years, manufactured
by a Cincinnati-based outfit of nondescript nomenclature that bought it from
Procter & Gamble. It turns out that the product is now being distributed by
CR Brands, Inc., of Spartanburg, S. C., another entity most of us never
heard of.
As Oxydol was America's first genuinely pervasive laundry product, it has a
proud tradition and legacy, even though it failed to make sufficient funds
to meet P&G's exacting standards -- after so many billions of those funds
were poured into advertising Tide and P&G's other newer competitive brands.
For those who will forever link Oxydol and the mother of the airwaves, Ma
Perkins (1933-60), it's great to see it still on grocers' shelves in some
places, no matter who produces it.

Subject: Jack Benny in today's news.
No, it has nothing to do with the country's financial troubles, although
I am waiting for some wag to say that Jack Benny could have bailed us out!
(And of course Bob Hope would be including a line in his monologue that
Bing Crosby could bail the country out!) But tonight Chris Matthews on
MSNBC's "Hardball" made a Jack Benny reference based on his comic
timing, not his averice. While discussing Joe Biden's past debates,
Matthews played the section when Brian Williams asked Biden whether he
could assure the voters that he would not be too verbose and would be
effective on the world stage. Biden quickly and succinctly said "Yes."
and just stared deadpan. After a second or two of silence while the
audience laughed they cut back to Brian Williams who also continued to
just sit there deadpan while the laugh continued for another five or so
seconds before thanking Sen. Biden. Chris Matthews came back and said
that this was Brian Williams with his Jack Benny moment enjoying the
reaction.

Dear Folks-
Just a heads up for those of you who feel like I do that Orson's Mercury
Theatre shows are, at their best, some of the best audio drama ever done;
and,
that the First Generation Radio Archives, at its best, does some of the best
audio restoration of network era radio drama ever done.
Lister Harlan Zinck and his merry band have done stellar work on a batch of
the first season episodes of this seminal series. I was honored to help
launch same with a few words:

For newbies hereabouts, the FGRA does wonderful work; and, as a
labor-of-love operation, deserves all the continued support we can give it.
It is
criminal, in this age of DVD restoration of classic film, that the other
great mass
media artform of the last century doesn't usually get such well-deserved
treatment.
Best,
-Craig W.

internet, and haven't found, a site that I can down load an episode
of the program and can verify the date of episodes I have . Some that
I have aren't the best quality so I want re-record a few.
So is there a "Straight Arrow" Web site ??
I would appreciate any info.

He was last know to be living in New Caanan, CT as of four years ago,

With all the news of new OTR related movies soon to come to the "big screen" I
wonder if anyone has information on the SHADOW movie that had been rumored to
be coming as of three or four years ago.
Not to be confused with the film THE SHADOW of 1994, this "new" version was to
be closer to the radio
version of Lamont alias The Shadow. Have heard nothing about this for a long
time now.
Anyone have an update (?? Anthony or Karl) about this or the search for the
never-found, 15-minute versions of the SHADOW that were syndicated in the
mid-30's after the original show and before the Welles version?
