Subject: South African Suspense

Hello Folks;

Does anyone know where I can obtain some South African 'Suspense' programs in
decent sound quality? I have two of them; one is very good quality but the
other
has commercials (and part of the program) cut and it is in poor sound quality.
Several years ago I corresponded with a man in South Africa and he told me that
copies of those shows are rare there and asked me to send copies of mine to
him-which I did.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Question on OTR actors on the tube and screen

Its interesting to read that others agree with me about how a otr
actor looked like vs what they sounded like.
While I was around during the days of OTV, I wasn't really aware of
radio. (The family got its first tv 1949 and radio was forgotten about
overnight it seems).
I have a question those who had grown up on radio and old enough to
know who was who during the OTV era if they, or knew of anyone, who
thought "So that's what so-and-so looks like!" when a otr actor popped
up on a show?

Hello [removed]
Some mention was made a few weeks ago about radio actors appearing on TV and
this happened more and more often, especially beginning in the late 1950's
when radio jobs seemed to be disappearing as TV began edging out radio for
America's leisure time and the networks started cutting back on radio drama
and comedy.

Here's a for instance: I wanted to show my two sons some of my favorite TV
shows that I watched when I was growing up and I chose an early (if not the
first) episode of Adam-12 and of course Dragnet. Appearing on Adam-12 was Art
Gilmore as the squad commander and Howard Culver as an owner of a local liquor
store who had been a recent victim of robberies. On Dragnet, Harry Bartell
played a bank official. Of course any of the 1960's TV shows featured dozens
of radio people, such as Ezra Stone who directed lots of Munsters episodes.
My kids think I'm crazy when we watch some of the old sitcoms and I
practically jump out of my chair when I recognize someone by the sound of
their voice.

Subject: Richard Thorne/Hall of Fantasy

There's been some discussion off and on on the Hall of Fantasy with
mentions of Richard Thorne. I do have a question and perhaps it will
lead to a correction.

In his listings of birth/deaths, Ron Sayles has this:

09-26-1904 - Richard Thorne - NYC - d. 1-31-1957
writer, creator, producer, director: "The Hall of Fantasy"

Yet, in his recent posting, Ken Piletic mentions this:

In or about 1965, I received a telephone call from Richard Thorne (a
stage/professional name), the writer/producer/actor of the Hall of Fantasy.

OK, now I know that Ken did not receive a call from a dead man, so I
checked one other source of info:
In his old (now no longer in business) catalog of SF & Horror radio,
Gordon Payton wrote this under his Hall of Fantasy entry:
"The series was written and directed by Richard [removed] is still
active to this day"
and he wrote this:
"In 1993 Thorne did some direct to cassette horror drama [removed]"

All of which is mighty active for a man who was purported to have died
in 1957. I would suggest if someone knows the current status of Mr.
Thorne that perhaps Ron can correct his listing so that we can give some
credit to the "report of his death, which [apparently] has been greatly
exaggerated."

Jack Benny had two regular stars on his show who shared a common trait --
gravely voices. I'm talking, of course, about Andy Devine and Eddie
Anderson. I think it is fairly common knowledge that Devine acquired his
unique vocal chords as a result of a childhood accident. But what about
Anderson? Was his voice natural, or also the result of some accident or
malady?

We will leave a discussion of Gravel Gertie for another time.

Subject: Uncle Remus for Christmas

I've got a couple of transcriptions I'm puzzling over that will be going
in my blog during the holiday season. I was wondering if any on the list
has any information at all on this series.

This discs are from a Cardinal series called "Uncle Remus" that was
syndicated as a Christmas series, although the program content didn't seem
to be connected with the holiday season. There's a brief reference in the
show's opening and close to Christmas activities, but that's all.

Now, I have found a series called "Sleepy Joe" that's also referred to as
"Uncle Remus" at [removed] However, this show is different - the
Remus shows I have references the Remus character directly and uses a
slightly different format with organ accompaniment and children that
interact with Remus in the show open and close.

Both "Sleeply Joe" and the "Uncle Remus" shows I have are done by Jimmy
Scribner, who also wrote and acted in "The Johnson Family", a program
about a Black family where he played all the parts. According to the Tim
Hollis book "Hi There, Boys and Girls!: America's Local Children's TV", in
circa 1948-49, Scribner did a "Sleepy Joe" television program on KTSL and
then on KECA, where the show was carried briefly on the ABC network.

In the Brooks Read Brer Rabbit collections at Louisiana State University,
there's mention of a "Uncle Remus" series that Read did on the Liberty
Broadcasting System. Read was involved in a lawsuit about another "Uncle
Remus" program that featured Scribner.

I've got two episodes of Scribner's "Uncle Remus" on transcription. Any
ideas on this one? Anyone run into other programs in this series?

My working theory is that it was initially syndicated under the "Uncle
Remus" name and that Cardinal had to withdraw the show and re-record it as
"Sleepy Joe", resulting in a different format for the program, because of
Read's threatened lawsuit.

I'll be putting these two episodes up on the blog in December, along with
some other Christmas rarities. It's never too early to think about the
holidays.
