Subject: Demo Episodes
Dan Hughes asks,
If I wanted to introduce a non-fan to a particular
show, what are good episodes to start with that
will make a great impression?
I don't know the dates, but, for The Lone Ranger, the building of the
Transcontinental Telegraph. The show provides historical perspective,
includes a section of currency and economics, and shows how by helping
the American Indians in bad times (a famine) could more than pay for
itself in more than goodwill.
For The Adventures of Sam Spade, "The Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottentail
Caper," possibly the best Sam Spade story for a newcomer.
Almost any Pat Novak For Hire episode will suffice as an introduction.
For Captain Midnight, the "Suicide Squadron" episode where the
experimental radar-coupled antiaircraft guns are employed against Admiral
Himakito's bombers.

Subject: Cincinnati North
Since it was a hot topic several weeks ago, I'm interested in assessments of
the headquarters hotel at Cincinnati, especially the rooms, restuarant and
front desk exchanges -- places that have received critical reviews in recent
years. Is it as bad as we have experienced before, or has it vastly
improved under this latest regime? An objective review of your experience
this year will be appreciated.

Dan Hughes said:
A sad note: Attendance was the lowest I've ever seen. The banquet was
held in a single room - they didn't expand into the dealer room, because
there weren't enough people to need to do that. I don't think there were
more than 40 people at the first show.
It is sad, but that will probably change next year. I already made a
temporary flier for Cincinnati (just need the dates of the convention
and confirmation it'll be at the same hotel) and the flier will be ready
to go to print. I don't know how long it will be before I have a few
thousand done, but anyone who wants to help pass out fliers (in mail
orders, in the local area, etc.) can e-mail me their name and mailing
address and I will make a list and mail fliers later in the year when
they are printed. I tossed this notion at the event and a LARGE number
of people said they would love to pass fliers out if I got them printed.
It's never too early to pass them out and help promote the event.

Great idea, Dan; it's fine to be esoteric - but it's also healthy to a hobby
to "get back to basics" on occasion!
Off the top of me head:
SUSPENSE: The Hitchhiker/Sorry, Wrong Number
THE LONE RANGER: The Return of Butch Cavendish (20th [removed])
MERCURY THEATER/CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE: The War of the Worlds/A Christmas Carol
('39)
THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM: just about any "Christmas Shopping" ep.: "Shoelaces
for Don," etc.
DIMENSION X: Mars is Heaven
VIC & SADE: Just about any 15min. ep. w/Rush
ESCAPE: Leinengen vs. the Ants
DRAGNET: The Big Bomb/The Big Little Jesus/The Big 22 Rifle
QUIET, PLEASE: just about any - with care about sound quality, as this is
often poor, which can sour a Newbie
COMMAND PERFORMANCE: Dick Tracy in B Flat
PHIL HARRIS & ALICE FAYE: The Sponsor's Daughter has a Crush on Phil
THE BICKERSONS: just about any VINTAGE (as opposed to the later lps) with
DON AMECHE (rather than Lew Parker)
GUNSMOKE: Christmas Story/Cavalcade
LUX RADIO THEATER: any of the prospective listener's favorite movie titles
QUICKSILVER RADIO THEATER: Frankenstein: Modern Prometheus/Good Friday, 1865
([removed], I cheated - that last one is not OTR, but contemporary!)
All best,

It's no secret that one of my favorite OTR programs is "Information, Please".
It is, in my opinion, one of the most literate quiz shows and I enjoy
listening
to it mainly because of the panel and they wonderful guests. One of the
panelists, Franklin P. Adams is referred to a member of the 'Conning Tower'
on each program by host Clifton Fadiman. My question is simple what was
this place and why was this important enough to be mentioned on each
program?
John Kieran was referred to a 'sports authority, published author, and
something
of a savant.' Oscar Levant was referred to by Fadiman as 'a musical
authority,
movie star, and composer.' Adams is referred to only as a member of the
'Conning Tower'. I've tried checking it out on the internet, but no luck!
Anything will help.

We got a late start promoting the convention this year, because the hotel
was in the middle of a change of hands. I wasn't sure they were going to be
in business at convention time. The sale went through, and I heard from them
late January. It's the only hotel in the area that has our space requirement,
and the price is right. All in all everything went very well, and we had
few complaints with the hotel.
Next year's dates are April 24th and 25th. We need more people to
attend. Mark your calendar now and make your plans to come.
Start now and save up for the trip. Who knows gas prices might be
lower by then.

Karen Hughes has posted her report on the Cincinnati convention. I hope
everyone enjoys it:
[removed]
She was 11 years old when we first attended, and at 23 she still gets
just as excited at the convention as she did the first time, when she had
the opportunity to act in a Lone Ranger episode with Fred Foy. And she
still wears the teeshirt that says JACK JACK JACK JACK on the front and
BENNY BENNY BENNY BENNY on the back.
She's now a teacher in an alternative high school (for kids who were
thrown out of regular high schools). Luckily, the kids seem to like her
- even when they are being hauled out of the classroom in handcuffs,
which happens more frequently than you might imagine.
