Subject: Art Linkletter's House Party

But I do remember hearing it, such as on days I was home from school.

On one of his most memorable broadcasts, he was doing a popular stunt of
picking a woman in the audience and, with her permission, going through her
purse, making comments and asking questions. He was offering to pay a woman
a few dollars for some odd item he found, when she suddenly said as they
quibbled over the price, "Are you trying to jew me down?"

Art stopped everything, expressed his shock and disappointment, emphasized
that the program was strictly for entertainment, and apologized to all his
audience there in the studio and on the airwaves, especially his Jewish
listeners, for what had happened. As I remember, he did not further speak
directly to the woman, probably had rapidly taken his microphone and gone
back to the stage. Good man, and excellent quick thinking.

Best to you. I wish there WAS a recording of that event.

Lou looked great on film, but we had to piece together every line from

I have two House Party shows. 5/15/51 on ABC with Pillsbury comm and
10/13/67 WCBS with Brach candy.
That date may be incorrect as Linkletter says it is the "final show after 27
years." I understand the show began
1/15/45. I also have one show of "What's the Name of That Song." Dated
3/20/46 with Wildroot comm but it is only the first half.

Somewhere in my stash I have the very last radio episode from 1967, which
sounded just like the TV
show I remembered from my childhood. (It pretty much was.) IIRC there's
supposed to be a 1949
"House Party" broadcast buried somewhere in Internet Archives, and it was
sponsored by Pillsbury.

A couple of questions, which might have already been answered at some time
previously and I just missed the answers:

Why did all, or most, of the titles of the Dragnet shows start with "The
[removed]"?

On any radio shows where organ music was used, how much of the music was
completely "scripted" and how much was more-or-less ad lib? I suspect a lot of
it might almost be compared to the piano/organ player in a silent movie
theatre.

Thanks.
