Subject: MARIHUANA on old-time radio
I have been contacted by Andrew Garret, the curator for a museum that
specializes in documenting and preserving anything that even remotely makes
mention of drug use, particularly marihuana.
>From Andrew:
Our museum is collecting OTR's that make reference to medical marihuana. I
assume that the Fu Manchu series makes lots of references to this (the books
make lots of reference etc.). We already have a copy of the "Shadow of fu
manchu" (first 40 episodes). Do you know of anyone who has any more of
them?
The following is a patch and scratch list (thus the reason it's in no
particular order and why the spelling and capitalization is messy) but the
museum is looking for any kind souls who can supply them with an audio copy
of any recordings on the list below or any recordings they are unaware of.
(I figured this ought to start an interesing conversation on the Digest
here.)
The museum does not have a budget to purchase recordings, so any donations
are strictly that - donations. But this helps spread word about old-time
radio and for a museum no less!
Anyone who has any recordings they are willing to make a copy of can drop me
a line and i will give you their mailing address.

"WE BATTLE WITH A BEAST" [Text version only] - Jan 24, 1935 (national
broadcast) -By Grace Morrison Poole, president of the "General Federation of
Women's Clubs." Text of speech was taken from the Congressional Record
(Senate) as entered March 26, 1935 [page 4424]. The speech is mostly about
narcotics in general with Marihuana mentioned in only one paragraph as
follows:
"It Is bad enough when the addict is an adult, but we have very good reason
to know that at the present time in our colleges, and even in our high
schools, drug peddlers are getting a lucrative living through selling a type
of cigarette made from the marihuana (mar-i-wa-na) weed, which is known in
the parlance of the peddlers as the " killer drug." It comes from a weed
that grows in many of the States of the Union, and the student of narcotics
tells us that the number of users of this particular drug is growing most
rapidly in this country. The users, we are also told, are frequently turned
into cruel monsters who commit the most atrocious crimes."

NBC RADIO 1947 Cartoon -- MOLLE MYSTERY Theatre
In the early 1970s, at a swap meet in the Boston area, I bought a packet of
caricatures. The cover (see photo and NOT included) is entitled NBC PARADE
OF STARS and inside is 53 7" x 6" caricatures (by Sam Berman) of NBC Radio's
1947 shows and/or stars; and what a line-up it was! Stamped on the bottom is
RADIO STATION WCSH PORTLAND, ME. This must have been an NBC promo which they
sent to various radio stations. Each show/star is listed separately (see my
other auctions); these are the original pics out of the packet, not copies.
All are in excellent condition as the pictures show. This is the Molle
Mystery Theatre. In 1947, the show was aired on Friday evening and the
sponsor was Molle Shaving Cream.

Subject: Sergeant Tetaglia: what was this program?
Hello, I used to hear the WRVO playhouse years ago, and remember a detective
show which had a secondary character named Sergeant Tetaglia that the main
character would visit at least once a show. I think the main character was
named Danny. Anyone know what program I'm trying to remember? Is there a
good set of programs that survive?
Thanks a lot.
