ADMINISTRIVIA:
We take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the
communication below, expressing at the same time our great
gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends
of The Sun:
Dear Editor, I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it's so."
Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon
115 West Ninety-fifth St.
VIRGINIA, Your little friends are wrong. They have been affected
by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except
they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible
by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or
children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere
insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world
about him, as measured by the intelligence of grasping the whole of
truth and knowledge
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love
and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and
give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would
be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as
if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then,
no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should
have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with
which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies!
You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on
Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa
Claus coming down what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus but
that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things
in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you
ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no
proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the
wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside,
but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest
man, not even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever
lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance,
can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty
and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world
there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand
years from now, Virginia, nay ten times ten thousand years from now,
he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
-- Editorial page of the New York Sun, September 21, 1897
From our entire family to yours - Annie, Katie (who knows perfectly well
there is a Santa Claus, since she's seen him - see
[removed] ), and yours truly; no matter what you
are celebrating at this truly amazing time of the year, Happy Holidays!

Anyone?

"~ December 22, 2010 ~
Fred Foy died this morning at his home in Woburn, MA, at the age of 89."

It was only recently, while listening to The Lone Ranger, that I began to
notice that Fred Foy had at least as many lines as anyone else in the
program, including the Ranger, and that as narrator he was at least as good
an actor as (IMHO, better than) any other member of the cast. He MADE the
show!
My favorite memory of Fred Foy, though, is from the mid 1960s. Fred was
functioning as the announcer on the ABC Radio Networks' "Closed Circuit."
This was a feed not intended for broadcast. Its purpose was to notify the
affiliates of last minute changes in the ABC schedule. Apparently ABC must
have lost an important account.
I was working for ABC affiliate WVIC in East Lansing, MI, when I heard that
unmistakable voice. Foy was reading through the schedule changes, and item
after item resembled this: "On Monday at 7:32:00, scratch Union Underwear.
On Monday at 10:03:30, scratch Union Underwear. On Monday at 16:32:00,
scratch Union Underwear."
This went on, and on, and on until finally I heard, "This is Fred Foy
leaving you with this advice: scratch Union Underwear."

Odd choice for a voice someone I like and think he had a great [removed]
but maybe someone can clue Me in as to who I am talking about. He was
usually heard on the Lone Ranger Program, played the bad guy, had a
husky/gravely type voice.
I think Joe is referring to Paul Hughes who played Thunder Martin among many
other characters on the Lone Ranger and also appeared in the Green Hornet and
the Sergeant Preston shows. He was part of the WXYZ stock company for many
years.

I believe that's Paul Hughes.
And no list of great voices would be complete without Brace Beemer.

Subject: Fred Foy
Very sad news about Fred Foy. Back in the Summer of 1996 Mr. Foy was a guest
at one of the early R. E. P. conventions. He was gracious enough to agree to
an appearance on Imagination Theatre as the narrator of a wwestern that Jim
had written called "Rembrandt." The show was recorded in front of a live
audience and I was in that audience. Just before as part of the warm up the
Jim talked with the various OTR alumi, Herb Ellis, Rhoda Williams, Parley
Baer, Tyler Mcvey and Art Gilmore. When he cam e to Mr. Foy he asked him if
he'd be kind enough to once more recite the opening to the Lone Ranger.
Without missing a beat he went right into it and if you looked around at the
older men in the audience you'd see a lot of eyes glisining with tears, mine
included. It is a moment that I have and will always cherish.

I think it's interesting that one of the subjects discussed lately on this
Digest has been great radio voices.
Today, we lost, in my opinion, the greatest radio voice of them all, Fred
Foy.
I just got off the phone with Fran Foy, Fred's wonderful, caring wife of so
many years. They were a sweet couple, always together and so much in
love.
Who didn't love Fred. He was a true gentleman. A kind, gentle soul.
Personally speaking, he was my inspiration to enter radio back when I was ten
years old listening to his thrilling narration on radio's Lone Ranger. You
can
just imagine the thrill I experienced, when years later, while I was on
the air in Boston, Fred was our guest announcer for one of our morning-drive
shows. We became friends and stayed in close touch over the years. I often
looked to him for advice on life and he and Fran always, willingly, shared
their time with me. I know, I speak for so many others, both in and out of
radio, who truly believe Fred Foy was radio's quintessential announcer.
But, he was so much more, a very special man and one of a kind person. There
will never be another quite like Fred. Fran said he passed peacefully. May
the Good Lord bless his soul. I will always remember with fondness the
kindness he showed me. I miss him already.

Wednesday - 12/22 My dear friend and possibly the best voice on radio, FRED
FOY, passed away today here in the Boston area at age 89.
He had lived in Woburn, MA for many years. A kindler, gentler, more talented
soul you could never have known. More details to follow.

I met Fred at an FOTR gathering some years ago and he was just a wonderful
soul.
I related to him that his daughter Nancy, a casting director of some
repute in Hollywood, had cast me in several things over the years and that
we would always have some fun with me doing a bad imitation of her father
doing the Lone Ranger intro.
I just left her a message with my condolences.
He was a real magician.
He could transport us to another time and place and that, dear
friends, is what magic is all about.
Radio is the instrument, but it take real vocal magicians to pull us
in.
One less magician [removed] when the world needs more.
Let us keep the 'magic' alive.
