It has been interesting to read about the early days of reel to reel tape use
on old radio programming. I have a number (about 12 I believe) of reels 1800'
tapes that have complete baseball games recorded on them. I have no need to
keep the tapes any longer. The games are not particuliarly old (1977 in most
cases)...Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati broadcasts for the most part. The
tape is in good [removed] list it as IMPEX (Dupont [removed] free) and
is a reddish brown color. If anyone wants them either to listen to or reuse
the tape all I need it the cost of postage plus a little to offset the cost of
the box. While the tape is in good shape the boxes are in rough condition.

Subject: "I Love A Mystery"

Back in the late 1930's I was a Jr. High School student. I recall being
a regular listener to an afternoon adventure program, "I Love A
Mystery".
I told my daughters that I thought it was named "I Love An Adventure",
but after Googling that I came up with "I Love A Mystery". In my fading
memory, I recall running to Physical Education. class singing out the
title of the show. Maybe it had a catchy theme song that was hung in my
brain?? Maybe someone could help my memory and direct me to one of the
recordings of the show to refresh my 82 year old brain?

Subject: Mayor of Metropolis

The editor of THE DAILY PLANET during Perry White's mayoralty was very
[removed] White.

There is apparently no legal requirement for a Mayor to entirely give up
his regular employment during his time of office, unless there's a marked
conflict of interest. And as long as the other papers were given equal access
to news breaks and city information that wouldn't seem to be a problem.

In fact the other papers would probably have been delighted to have "one
of their own" in the top spot.

Moreover, White functioned much more as a publisher than as a workaday
"editor." He had all sorts of deputies underlings for that.

     Sincerely,

compares to the TV adaptation, "The Stolen Costume":

descend the mountain while he's gone, and fall to

"That dark an ending?

In some ways, even darker. In the TV version,
Superman is well on his way and out of sight before
the couple try their ill-fated escape. On radio, as
the two begin their descent, narrator Jackson Beck
tells us that Superman SEES them. "Those stupid
fools," Supes exclaims, but just as he begins to turn
around, the pair slip and plummet to their deaths. I
wonder how it was that Superman, who had just stepped
in front of Candy Meyers to stop a bullet that had
been fired BEFORE HE EVEN ENTERED THE ROOM, could not
muster up the speed to intercept the two falling
evildoers.

Earlier, when Superman confronted the two
blackmailers, he warned them: "You know, dead men tell
no tales." The male crook responds, "You're not gonna
kill us. That's not your way." "Right now, I wish it
was," replies the Man of Steel.

Yep - that dark.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

A small addition to the excellent postings on radio taping, particularly in
reference to the Crosby shows. Back in 1949-50, part of my job
responsibilities was to attend the Crosby tape editing sessions. Just me and a
genius editor, Murdo MacKenzie, in a small studio. My role was solely in
respect to the placement and content of the Chesterfield commercials.

It was obvious that the reasons for taping was convenience, not only for
Crosby personally but for the sake of the shows themselves. Although scripted
and timed by Bill Morrow, there was a great deal of ad libbing and encouraged
informality which made taping a technical necessity. I certainly was never
aware that Bing's golf schedule was much of a factor in their use of tape but
working with MacKenzie and witnessing any number of redos and piecing together
bits of tape from the rehearsal and final performances to make a better
version made me a believer in why Crosby and his production staff were wedded
to the use of tape.

"Glen Schroeder" commented:

I've been watching some Jack Benny Shows on DVD lately, and at the end
of the shows he talks about how he'll back back in three weeks. Then
he says to tune in next week for the Ann Suthern Show Private
Secretary. Does anyone know what6 show was on the third week. Thanks.

i'm not 100% sure, but i think it was the gary moore show.

According to "The Complete Directory of Prime Time Network and Cable TV
Shows 1946 - Present" by Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh, talking about "Private
Secretary,":

"The CBS episodes aired during the winter season were rerun by NBC during
the summers of 1953 and 1954. During the winter seasons from the fall of
1954 through the spring of 1957, 'Private Secretary' aired on alternate
Sundays with 'The Jack Benny Show.' While Benny was on vacation during the
summers, 'Private Secretary' played every week."

So it seems that the only show which rotated with Jack Benny was "Private
Secretary.

1947 - Radio's show with a heart made its debut. Strike It Rich became
a favorite on CBS. Todd Russell was the original host. Warren Hull
took over a few years later.

I remember Todd Russell as host of the Rootie Kazootie show on
television.

1951 - Jack Webb, along with Dragnet, also did a summer show -- that
of Pete Kelly. Pete Kelly's Blues, a crime drama, was the summer
replacement on NBC for Halls of Ivy (with Ronald Colman and Benita
Hume).

I thought I recognized Pete Kelly's blues as a TV show, so I
consulted my favorite reference, "Total Television," by Alex McNeil.
Sure enough, it was on NBC from 31 March to 4 September 1959. Jack
Webb produced and directed, but apparently didn't appear in the show.
It says that Webb was a jazz fan and employed an 8-piece band headed
by Dick Cathcart to provide the music for the series.
