I was listening to an episode of The Saint where they credit Dick Powell as
the writer.
Was this the same Dick Powell as the actor who played Richard Diamond?
Also i've heard shows by Gil Dowd (sp) and by Ann Dowd. Were they related?
Just curious, Jay

You'll probably get a lot of responses on this, but there's a wonderful,
wonderful site called the Online Discographical Project at
[removed]. While the search function doesn't always work
([removed], recently searched
for "Whispering" to find a recording date for my common Paul Whiteman

Bryan Jensen asked:

Both my father and father-in-law told about a run of Jack Benny programs
where the punch line was about Cimmeron Rolls. What were the dates these
programs aired.

Those are: March 22, 1953; March 29, 1953; April 5, 1953; and April 12,
1953 where Mary discovers the secret of Cimeron Rolls.

Hi Gang:

With the recent Digest mentions of Harry Von Zell, I'd like to know if he
once really introduced "...the President of the United States: Hoobert
Heever!" or if this is one of the apocryphal stories Kermit Schaeffer and his
"re-created" Bloopers records blew out of proportion.

Best always from the ether!

Subject: John Gambling's "Smile" song

Don, I, too, remember listening to the old John Gambling show on WOR. I,
too, remember only parts of the song. As I remember it, it went,
"Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag,
And smile, smile, smile.
While you've elicifered (?) to light (?) your bag,
Smile, boys, that's the style.
What's the use of worrying,
It never was worthwhile, so,
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag,
And smile, smile, smile."

I can't guarantee the accuracy of this. It's just my recollection, heard
while I was waiting for Gambling to close Edison Township, NJ, schools in
the winter.

Don, I've added two missing lines. The song was from World War I, I
believe. Gambling also used "In a Country Garden", as his closing music (or
did he start with "Garden" and end with this one??).

Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile.

While you've a lucifer (match) to light your fag (cigarette),
Smile, boys, that's the style.

What's the use of worrying, it never was much fun, so
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile! >

Subject: Portable DVD players

Over a year ago there was a bit of chat on the digest about travelling with
your mp3's. There was some talk about an mp3 player with speakers that was
advertised. I remember that I had a few e-mails with Michael C. Gwynne (I
think it was). I seem to remember that one of the factors was the
inconvenience of carrying round a laptop computer as you travel, especially
if you are going on holiday. Personally I bought a hybrid cd/mp3 player. I
got a split connection so that my wife and I can both plug in our
headphones. I also bought a small pair of battery operated speakers that we
can carry around easily.
Anyway, the reason that I mention this is that we have just come back from
Australia. While we were there I was looking at the portable DVD players.
I first saw this in China last time we were there and they were still quite
expensive then. However, in Australia I saw that they have come down a lot
in price. I just wondered if anybody has any experience of using them - in
particular I wonder if anybody has any experience travelling with them.
They look a lot lighter that carrying a laptop but they seem to have the
convenience of built in speakers as well as the flexibilty of playing other
files rather than just mp3s.
Anybody have any experience with them?

Just as a seperate point. I have been travelling so I have not had much
chance to respond to my "geek" question. I think that my favourate quote
was "I am a geek but I am a loveable one." I think I hope that people think
that of me as well. My feeling is that having a positive interest is a good
thing, unless it becomes a dangerous obsession. Also as interest goes I
think otr is fairly harmless compared to many others and I would argue that
it is quite a positive one as well.

Now then I guess the next question is "Are we nerds?"

Thanks to all who responded.

Love as always, David Rogers

Subject: Re: "Pack Up Your Troubles"

According to the Variety Music Cavalcade, John B. Gambling's theme, "Pack Up
Your Troubles In Your Old Kit Bag" was published in 1915. It was written by
George Asaf (words) and Felix Powell (music) and was published in London.
Naturally it was a WWI hit there, but here as well.

Ironically, Amos & Andy's "Perfect Song" was also published in 1915.

In an episode of Fibber McGee and Molly, Teeny makes a reference to the Red,
White and Blue Network. I know about the Red and Blue, but where does the
White come in? Or were the writers just being cute? Anyone have an idea
about this? Oh, yes, the particular show is one entitled "Cleaning the Hall
Closet."

My TotalRecorder failed last night and I missed WRVO Playhouse, which aired
the second half of a two-part Suspense episode, "Mystery of Edwin Drood,"
dated by WRVO as January 12, 1953. I'm actually very interested in that in
that Rupert "Remember WENN" Holmes turned the same story into a stage play.

Does anyone have the show for trade?
