I believe that one of the Chicago Policemen, Patrick McVey, played the part

Anyone have any thoughts?

Subject: Bernard Herrmann question
Stephen Jansen wrote:
For anyone looking for the OTHER (missed) OTR notable in Hitchcock's
"North By Northwest" who was also in "Psycho", "Cape Fear", "Vertigo", and
"The Wrong Man" - he was also in Brian DePalma's "Obsession", and "Sisters",
and "The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad" and "Journey To The Center Of The Earth"
and "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and "Mysterious Island" and "The Trouble
With Harry" and "Torn Curtain" and "It's Alive" and "Marnie" and "Jason And
The Argonauts" and "Citizen Kane" and MORE.
I am, of course, speaking of the great composer/conductor Bernard
Herrmann.
Stephen, Stephen, [removed] could you POSSIBLY leave out the only
Hitchcock film that Herrman PHYSICALLY appears in? Namely, Hitch's
remake of his own THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH in 1956. He is the
conductor of the orchestra at Albert Hall during the climax of the film.

Subject: OTR SLOGANS ON T-SHIRTS
I read with great interest the different reactions to the suggestions of
OTR slogans on T - Shirts, and I would, if I may like to share this personal
experience on this very topic
About 10 years ago, my daughter, who is an air-brush artist, gave me two
t -shirts she air-brushed for Christmas. One was a Philco Cathedral radio,
with the [removed]"you turn me on!" coming out of the speaker. The other one
was a silhouette of The Shadow (not the Logo, but a full figure with flowing
cape) with the [removed]"Who knows what evil lurks?" above it and ..."The
Shadow does!" below it.
Well, shortly after "THe Shadow" movie came out, I was in Ocean City, and
went into one of the many T-shirt shops on the Boardwalk, and lo, and
behold, there were a number of T-shirts with The Shadow Logo on them and the
words: "The Shadow Knows!"
I took a closer look at the trade mark at the bottom of the Logo and it
was Copyrighted by the studio that produced the picture. I happened to have
my Shadow T - shirt on at the time and the store owner wanted to know where
he could get some like mine to sell. I told him, "Sorry, buddy, this is a
one-of-a-kind T-shirt!" They also had some of The Phantom, Buck Rogers, Dick
Tracy, Abbott & Coste;;o and the Lone Ranger, which had the name of the
Commercial distributor at the bottom of the Logos.
These shirts not doubt have been in circulation for quite awhile, so
obviously whoever is distributing them has the rights to do so. But I do
think that the idea of R OTR phrases, with an old Radio or microphone may be
plausible (and a good item for OTR Conventions).
Several years ago, I had my daughter make up a T-shirt for a door prize at
one of our fund-raising meetings with the same Cathedral Radio and the
[removed]"Return with us now, to those thrilling days of yesteryear!" coming
out of the speaker. If an OTR Vendor had been there with that item, he could
have sold one to every member!

confessed that she did lots of NY radio and CA radio. I only have one
recording in which she guessed on. Part One (or is it part two?) of

Hitchcock in a small supporting role. Does anyone have any other radio

MediaBay (read: RadioSpirits) filed a complaint against Napster,
asking it to, "filter out and effectively block our programs
from being traded."
IF Napster's lawyers are sharp, this might be the best news to us. It's
become apparant that the only disclosure of just what they own would
come during depositions around a lawsuit. If we are lucky they might
finally have bitten off more than they can chew and be forced to
disclose EXACTLY WHICH shows are "theirs".

It is easy to excuse Stephen Jansen for grouping "Cape Fear" with four
Hitchcock films in his original post. "Cape Fear," the 1962 version,
may appear to some has having the look and feel of a Hitchcock film.
But to suggest, in the last OTR Digest, that the answer to his question
about an OTR notable in all of the films he mentioned, is composer
Bernard Herrmann, is the same as saying that Herrmann's wife, Lucille
Fletcher, is in the radio play, "Sorry, Wrong Number," because she wrote
the script.
I don't think so.

Subject: It's about profits, not copyrights!
Thanks for allowing the topic, Charlie!
Ok, let's do some math. Since I burn CD's for audio purposes (for myself
only,NOT FOR SALE mind you!) I am mainly used to cost per half hour .
The brand I get costs 50 cents, including case. So I can put two half
hours on there at 25 cents each. for a 74 minute audio CD. Radio
Spirit's lowest price on a CD that I have seen is about $[removed] per hour
special sale price(corrections welcomed) or [removed] per half hour. That's
$[removed] that RS gets per half hour program outside of the cost of a CD. (I
know that there are many other costs involved, I am just putting this in
simple consumer terms)
That's also $[removed] that they are no longer getting from me ([removed]
confess I once was an RS customer). Hence they are trying slowly to shut
down any possible sources that I can obtain OTR from for 25 cents a half
hour. And we are not even talking about putting 650 MB of OTR material
on a CD in MP3 format which would be of course FAR LESS cost per half
hour to the consumer. Perfectly understandable why Mr. Amari is doing
this. It's not about copyrights but about lost profits. Also perfectly
understandable why I am obtaining shows the "illegal" way. It's called
saving a whole lot of money to be able to enjoy many fine performances
and good entertainment.

Steve's posting reminded me of something. Anyone who has a copy of North by
Northwest at home, replay the film again, and everytime you see a group of
number (on a hotel door, cab door, lisence plate, etc.), add them up and
you'll get 13. Example: 472 is 4+7+2=13! It isn't everywhere in the movie,
but more than a couple times. Hitchcock humor.

Dear Larry
Thank you very much for getting back to me. I am so
relieved that you have email - it could have proved very
difficult tracking you down by 'phone and I didn't want
you to have the expense of calling us.
Below is the message that Adrian dictated the other day.
Many thanks
Jane
Dear Mr Gassman
I am writing to you at the suggestion of John Dunning who
kindly gave me the names of you and your brother.
I am researching a book on the life and career of the
American writer David Goodis. As you may be aware, David
Goodis had a brief career in radio and - according to an
interview he gave in the mid-1940's - he worked, at least
for some time on Superman and Hot Paragon.
I wondered if you know where I might be able to obtain
tapes of these shows. I tried the MTR and they do not
have anything and, as far as I can ascertain, none of the
commercial sources, such as Radio Spirits, seem to have
released them.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Subject: The True Protectors of OTR
Nearly all of the legal discussion about OTR centers around copyrights and
distributors. But a lot of the material they sell today would not even exist
if it had been left up to the original rights owners to preserve it. I
wonder if a legal case could be made that copyright protection expires when
there are no legitimate copies to protect?
Anyway, I would like to thank all the people who have spent so many years
lovingly preserving and protecting OTR, long before its profit-making
potential was rediscovered by modern-day distributors, who seem to be
stampeding in on their white horses to defend the ancient copyrights.
Many thanks to all of you for finding, cleaning and restoring old
recordings; for scouring junk shops, attics and estate sales; for
accumulating the knowledge and expertise to recognize valuable things for
what they are; and lastly for making and distributing illegal copies,
without which a lot of precious material would have been lost forever.
