Subject: Engineer Bill Passes

Hi all,

Bill Stella passed away this week.

Although he is remembered for his TV career, he had a terrific radio
career prior to Television.
John and I interviewed him for SPERDVAC over the years as well as for
our radio show.
He lived a long productive life.

"hi, anyone out there help me on this?, lost the insert
 I've come
across a few shows that begin with "Your about to hear a story".... and then
a 1/2 hour dramatization of a wartime event (Usually a ship sinking in WWII)
is depicted. I can't find the name of the show anyplace in these dramas.
It's not mentioned by an announcer at the start or end and the shows are
unsponsored and their is no formal recognizable announcer. The drama just
starts and ends each time. Do you know what these shows are, or their formal
title?"

Ed, this sounds a lot like WORDS AT WAR, the series produced by the
Council on Books in Wartime during 1943-44. Excellent shows and all of them
available to collectors.

We know the LR used silver bullets. But what about
Tonto? Did they make separate lead bullets for Tonto? Or were
enough silver bullets made for both of them?

Maybe they were shaped like little arrows. :-)

Maybe the convention planners could make available to the non-attenders

All of the FOTR recreations have been recorded. In the early years
they were on reel to reel tape. Sometime in 1980 they started video
recording. I have copies of all the conventions including the reel to
reel tapes.

About 5 or 6 years ago, we started video recording the convention for
FOTR and make those DVDs available for sale. You can find order forms

Subject: See you that - and raise you one!

Dear Folks-

I'd agree with Esteemed Listers Martin, Derek, Michael, et al, that "lost"
(or even "exceeding rare") episode scripts make a great deal of sense, as far
as Recreation material.

But beyond that, I think that lost, or rarer, SERIES are sadly
underrepresented, overall.

I think that Bill Nadel's presence in the FOTR stable is much missed; many
are the glowing comments I've heard over the years about his choices. Such
like as LIGHT OF THE WORLD, PAUL TEMPLE, etc. (and several tantalizing
titles he
was considering when he "retired") are, in many ways, more savvy choices
that the umpteenth GREEN HORNET, JACK BENNY, etc. Add to this "pique their
interest" list, such choices as Arthur Anderson/Jay Stern's "2000+"

Don't get me wrong - I love chestnuts, and classics are Classics for a
reason. But there have even been years when SEVERAL of the precious few
Conventions we have, even presented nearly the same bill-of-fare!

That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, or be very worth the Attendee's
hard-earned bucks. As Martin posited, is there really a vibrant interest in
having yet another DATE WITH JUDY, when the crowds might be introduced to the
FABULOUS DR. TWEEDY?

Of course, all of the above good OR bad impulses should be tempered by what
I have come to call "The Alice Anderson Rule" - "Above all, make it a
WELL-WRITTEN script, WELL-cast." I think we've all suffered through the
production
of a show where we groaned afterwards either, "well, now I see why that show
is forgotten!," and/or, "what in heaven's name possessed them to give that
actor that role?"

Best,
-Craig W.

Subject: Tonto's ammunition

A. Joseph Ross asks about Tonto's ammunition. I don't know if the
question is specifically addressed in the television series, but from
what I can see, the bullets carried in the Lone Ranger's cartridge
(belt) loops are shinier than those carried by Tonto.

What I regard as more positive proof, however, is a passage from the
book "The Lone Ranger and the Gold Robbery" copyrighted in 1939, and
authored by Fran Striker.

The Ranger and Tonto are trapped on a small island surrounded by
quicksand and are surrounded by lawmen. The LR emptied one of his ivory
handled guns, and Tonto "Saw him contemplate the weights as they lay on
the palm of his hand. Silently then, Tonto drew a lead-filled cartridge
from his belt. There were five others to match it, and he held the load
out for the Lone [removed]

"The Lone Ranger made his decision. Slowly, deliberately, he reloaded
the gun. Not with the bullets held by Tonto. He replaced the
cartridges of silver" (pp. 51-52).

It seems clear to me that Tonto used lead cartridges, which of course
would be commonly available at any general store. I think we may safely
assume that Tonto replenished his supply of cartridges when he went into
town for bacon, flour, and the supplies we hear him mention from time to
time. I don't know that the caliber of Tonto's pistol is mentioned
anywhere in the -- are you ready for this, Derek, O Mayor of Etherville
and punster supreme -- CANON of Lone Ranger adventures, but as a target
shooter myself, I like to think that they were both armed with Colt
Single-Action revolvers in caliber .45 Colt. As to the manufacturer of
the Ranger's sidearms, reference is occasionally made to the "brace of
Colts" carried by the masked man.
