Subject: Radio Stations offering OTR
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

To determine which stations air OTR, you might look at [removed] and
either type in "nostalgia" since those stations are likely to be airing
oldtime radio shows or type in old radio shows or oldtime radio.

I found two internet stations listed for oldtime radio:
[removed]+radio+shows

and another I have listened to in the past:
[removed]

These are likely to be some of the stations airing oldtime radio, since it
isn't commercially viable and many of the public radio stations no longer air
it.
These are a safer bet and everyone can listen to internet radio.

Just as a correction:

Santana Productions was started by Bogart in the hopes that he could
generate top flight movies, for himself, and others. He had long grown
frustrated by the kinds of movies that were being offered [removed] He
also wanted to be his own boss.

As I recall, the outfit was supposed to be in partnership with Ben
Hecht, who had the bad manners to pass away, early [removed]

Bogart was NEVER in dire financial straits.

That's a fabrication, or misunderstanding.

However, the appeal of picking up some easy dough, doing the radio show,
I'm certain would have been vastly appealing!

Want to think about something really interesing:

Imagine what Bogart, and Clark Gable's careers might have been like, the
types of movies they would have appeared in, had they lived through the

Errol Flynn on THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES?

Subject: The Weather Bird

I was driving through Southern Indiana earlier this year, poking around
on the AM band to see what "local flavor" small town radio stations I
could find, and happened across 1240 in Salem, Indiana. It was a mostly
gospel program format, but their local news was quite entertaining, read
in a dull monotone that was just so jaw-droppingly bad it was great.

When they went to their weather report, they first cut to the NOAH
radio, and then to the subject of this note -- It was an ancient,
OTR-sounding "weather bird" jingle, with some gal singing about "what
does the weather bird say?"... and then the weather bird came on with a
voice like a parrot, and said "fair and warmer today, fair and warmer
today! Awk!" I loved it.

Does anyone know anything about the "weather bird" jingle or have an mp3
of any of these? I'm guessing that a whole set of these was supplied to
stations and they would use whichever applied to the current weather on
a given day.

I suspect that there are collectors of old OTR-era jingles, weather
reports, newscast bumps, etc. out there, but I've never heard much
mention of them here on the list.

The weather bird says, have a great day!

Subject: The Six Shooter, too?

In #182, Mike says this in response to a question about Bold Venture and
Rocky Fortune:

I'm sure others will elaborate with much greater detail, but it was asked why
Bogey, Bacall and Frankie agreed to forego their lucrative films careers for
[removed] [removed] both series came at very NON-lucrative points in their
respective careers.

It has been my understanding that this is also somewhat the case for
Jimmy Stewart and The Six-Shooter. The radio show made for a good
paycheck during and otherwise thin time in his career. However, I don't
know this for a fact. Since we're on the topic, can anyone confirm or
deny this?

Subject: Gretchen Wyler

I just learned that Gretchen Wyler, TV and stage actress who, among
other things, took over the role of Lola from Gwen Verdon in _Damn
Yankees_, died not quite a month ago. She is, perhaps, best known for
creating the Genesis Awards honoring those in show business who have
advanced the cause of animal rights. She would have been a young
woman in the heyday of radio drama, but I couldn't find any mention
of radio work. Of course, we all know that doesn't mean there wasn't
any. Does anyone know if she was in any radio productions?

Subject: ? movie actor with best radio presence?

What are people's opinions about who is the movie actor with the best radio
presence? Who is the actor, best known for work in movies, who also
appeared on radio, occasionally or regularly, and gave solid performances?
I read recently about the mutual disdain between movie and radio actors
(was it in the Idelson biography?), where movie actors thought radio actors
mugged too much at the mic and couldn't possibly tone it down for the
camera; and radio actors thought movie actors couldn't handle the live
drama with no retakes, and were likely to sound wooden or to muff their
lines.

I think Rathbone is a good example for comparison. He has a strong
presence on radio, but keeps breaking the spell by misreading his lines or
jumping his cue. Hedy Lamarr usually wasn't asked to do much during her
radio appearances, but she comes off as confident and relaxed. I would
like to hear more of her.
