Charlie North asked if the Howard Culver who did the "CHANDUUU" openings and
closings, and the White King Commercials on Chandu, was the same Howard
Culver who played the lead as "Straight Arrow".
Yes, Charlie - same Howard Culver. You probably will be interested in
reading the story of "Straight Arrow", as written by archiver William
Harper, and recently published by Bear Manor Magic, very in-depth, and
containing many pictures.

TV shows that outlived their OTR parents. I don't think that anyone
mentioned Gunsmoke (over 20 years on TV), Truth or Consequences (there
were two separate runs both for quite a while), Guiding Light (still
on), and Dragnet (which had two fairly long runs for TV).
I must have missed the original post on this topic. Shows that come
to mind are "You Bet Your Life," the Burns & Allen Show, The Lone
Ranger, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, and the Voice of Firestone.

A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

Subject: Cassette Tapes
Joseph Webb's suggested that we read an Associated Press article re:
[removed] Have read it and liked it. I have been using cassettes since
1971. I have over 3600 tapes of various lengths 30, 90, 62, and 120
minutes. all my cassettes are numbered, labeled and in plastic boxes. I
order 100 62min cassettes and storage boxes at a time. I also buy blank
labels and incert cards. I make labels on my computer. All my cassettes
are on my data base on the computer. I can look a program by date and/or
title in seconds. I also have another data base of Logs. The article
mentioned National Audio Co., Inc. that's where I order my supplys. The
last 100 62 min tapes cost me $.35 for cassettes and $.13 for clear
plastic boxes. If I went to a Dollar Store for a buck 3 cheap
cassettes. I get good Quality. The programs recorded in 1971 are still
just as goos as if thy were recorded today.
The only reason I learned how to us a computer was to catalog my OTR
programs back in 1993 working with DOS 5. I have progress and now use
Wondows XP.
My Cassettes are stored in open plastic trays 30 to a tray, but can't
buy the same trays any more . so I now use cardboard box lids (17 1/2" x
10 1/2") that hold 60 cassettes. I get the box lids from various stores.
CD's are OK but needs to much special handling .Can't change a label
and have to use special markers to write on them. If the face is
scratched it affects the recording

Subject: RE: Pall Mall & other stuff
When I was a kid, my parents ran a 'candy store,' pretty much like today's
convenience stores. While we purchased our cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco
from a single wholesaler, every so often one tobacco company or another would
send a representative over to offer to trim our windows, of course with their
brand prominently displayed, and also to hand out those little sample packs
of cigarettes, which did hold 4 cancer sticks each. There were also intercept
people out on busy street corners handing out those packages to passers by.
Once a rep stopped by, set his suitcase on the table, opened it up, and it
had a built-in movie theater with projector, screen, and sound system. The
film was a documentary of Lucky Strikes from the tobacco fields to the user.
And yes, there was the auctioneer with his "SOLD! American." spiel. When the
film started, I think I was there with my parents and the rep and by the time
it was over, there was a crowd hanging out the door.
I purchased a stack of MP3 formatted CDs from some vendor, who I don't
remember, but I think there were six Gunsmokes and six YTJDs. Each disk held
somewhere around 100 shows, and the quality was somewhat spotty. Still, I
could pop one of those babies in my car player in El Lay, and the disk still
wasn't finished when I arrived in Kingman, AZ., some six to seven hours
later. That's the real power of MP3 recordings. True, it doesn't seem
excessive to need to change a disk every hour or so, but regular, high
quality CDs always seem to end when I'm at road speed and there's no place to
pull over and stop to replace one. I think anyone who drives long distances
would appreciate having a disk in their player that didn't need changing for
an entire trip. BTW, the Gunsmoke disks included the commercials for
Chesterfields and L&Ms.
Thanx,

Subject: The Family Theater
Though I suspect they do exist, I am missing the following episodes of THE
FAMILY THEATER which are apparently VERY elusive.
Broadcast dates listed below.
March 29, 1950
August 26, 1948
February 23, 1949
April 5, 1950
January 2, 1952
April 16, 1952
April 9, 1952
July 30, 1952
September 24, 1952
November 25, 1953
April 6, 1955
April 4, 1956
December 19, 1956
December 26, 1956
April 24, 1957
and July 24, 1957
If anyone has any of these, please let me know. I am willing to buy or
trade. Jay Hickerson's guide does not list them as existing, and no
collector catalogs offer them so "unofficially," these are the lost/elusive
episodes.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I have been collecting OTR since about 1970. I have several thousand reels of
OTR. The advent of MP3 has allowed me to listen to many more shows than I
ever did on tape. My standard for quality is simple. If I can listen to the
program easily and I can recognize the voices of the actors, it's good
enough. I
still remember what it was like "live", static crashes and the station fading
in
and out. If I get a really bad quality show, I just skip to the next one.
I am presently listening to Voyage Of The Scarlet Queen. In what appears to
be Pgm.#1 Phil Carney is played by Howard Duff and Gallagher is played by
Elliott Lewis. Then the same show is done with Elliott Lewis playing Carney
and Ed
Max playing Gallagher. I assume that the Duff version was an audition disc.
Does anyone have any info on this and did anyone else audition for the show. I
like Howard Duff's work very much but, I think that Elliott Lewis did a much
better job in this series. "After you Mate, after you."
Take care and good listening,
Larry Evans - WA8DDN
