Thanks folks for answering about the late 1950s early 60s CBS radio network
programs.
I was actually alive then but wasting my (4 year old) time watching Beany &
Cecil and similar TV shows :)
The archive Bob and Ray CBS shows are roughly 15 minutes long, just about
perfect for listening to while walking a mile, briskly.

1949 After a decade on radio, Captain Midnight was heard for the final
time. Put your secret decoder badges away now, kids.
The Fall season of 1949 was different in format than the previous
seasons. /Captain Midnight/ originally was a 15-minute adventure serial.
In the Fall season, the format changed to half-hour stories, complete in
one episode. The actor playing Captain Midnight changed. Throughout the
serials, the part was played by Ed Prentiss;the half-hour programs had
Paul Barnes in the title role. Because of the new format,no "secret
messages" were ever sent at the close of the programs.
The "decoder badges.," called Code-O-Graphs, were in badge form fro 1941
trough 1946. They changed format to pocket items from 1947 through
1949.

Subject: Re: George Gobel
According to B and R biographer Dave Pollock, Bob and Ray's CBS show was part
of an early evening endeavor calld COMEDY BLOCK. This included ... and I
believe,
a spot with Garry Moore. ... and monologues from George Gobel.
No Gary Moore, at least not while I was [removed];<194>> And no George Gobel
either. I remember him doing monologs on NBC's Monitor on Saturdays.
Since his television shows were on NBC, it's not surprising that his
radio appearances were there, and not on CBS.

Subject: Re: Fred Allen
1953 Fred Allen returned from semi-retirement to narrate Prokofiev's
classic, Peter and the Wolf, on the Bell Telephone Hour on NBC.
Fred Allen no longer had a regular weekly show at that time, partly on
doctor's orders, and partly because of falling ratings during his last
season with competition from a game show on ABC and the rise of
television, but he did make many appearances in both media. He
guest-hosted the comedy quiz show "Two for the Money" once or twice, and
that was when I first saw him. He also made an appearance on the Howdy
Doody show, though I didn't see that until relatively recently, when I
saw it as an "extra" in a 40-episode DVD set of Howdy Doody shows. He
appeared on Jack Benny's radio and TV shows a few times, and he became a
regular panelist on "What's My Line?" until his sudden death in 1956.
When he died, our TV wasn't working, and as a result, we were all
sitting in the living room, listening on the large wood-cabinet radio
(which now graces my own living room) to a special tribute to Fred Allen
on radio. I seem to remember Herb Shriner, the regular host of "Two for
the Money," emceeing the tribute, but I can't remember who else was there.

I was wondering if there were shows sponsored by alcoholic beverages that had
to quickly find new sponsors when Prohibition was enacted?

I enjoyed Anne Walker's mention of "The Littlest Angel," as narrated by
Loretta Young on Family Theater. Has anyone who has heard this show noticed
that Loretta is very emotional and close to tears near the end of the show,
having a problem keeping her composure until the program is finished?
