These are dubs of programs that have been circulating in the OTR world
for years, and did not come from the original master reels. So far as I
know, the only licensing obtained on these was the blanket license Radio
Spirits holds from CBS.

I don't know if they bothered to take out licenses from the Harry Fox
Agency for the records played in these programs or not -- that's between
RS and its lawyers.

Subject: Snooks Promos

I recently played a Baby Snooks tape that I've had for years but had
never listened to before. It is a tape produced by Golden Moments of
Radio and contains a complete show from 10-17-47, but has no
commercials. On the second side is what they list as 1940's Six Skits.
These are promos for other CBS shows, and they run about five minutes
each and are done in front of an audience. The promos are for Inner
Sanctum, I Love a Mystery, Dr Christian,Ozzie and Harriet, Meet Corliss
Archer, and This Is My Best. With the exception of Dr. Christian there
are no other actors other that Fanny Brice and Hanley Stafford.
My question is why were these long promos done and were they done as
part of Snooks shows? It seems very unusual to me. The Snooks show was
just back on CBS as of 9-17-44, according to Dunning, and was sponsored
by General Foods. Would the sponsor allow these promos on their air
time? I doubt it. They also seem too long to be used between other CBS
programs.
The Ozzie and Harriet Show is mentioned as new and sounds like it hadn't
aired yet. They began broadcasting on 10-8-44 on CBS so I assume that
these promos were from just before that date. I believe that This Is My
Best was new also and that show debuted on CBS on 9-5-44.

By the way, these were very funny well written scripts that sounded just
like the regular writer/writers of the Snooks shows.
Anybody know anything about these?

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

For the record, Cracked is still being published although no one ever seems
to buy it at my store. It began around the same time as the magazine version
of Mad. Cracked has rarely been funny although it was the best place to find
art by the great John Severin for many years. Currently, it is being edited
by
Rick Neilsen of the rock group Cheap Trick (supposedly, anyway. He may just
be allowing his name and image, such as it is, to be used. Then again, this
may be his day job these days)
Someone asked if National Lampoon was still around also. It exists mainly as
a trademark at this point, currently offering several hardcover reprints of
"classic" material from the seventies along with a few more modern bits. Their
main focus, though, in recent years has been the movies, still putting out
forgettable comedies in a seemingly endless quest to duplicate Animal House.
As far as Alfred E Neuman (not Newman),there have been a number of attempts
at tracing the character back to its original appearance including a
multi-part piece in a fanzine called The Journal of Madness a few years ago
that
pleads a good case for Alfie being a descendant of gross Irish caricatures
going
back a few centuries! Completely recognizable images of the character go back
into the 1800's.

Subject: Rocky Jordan

In Digest #352 Archie asked about what appears to be two different episodes
of RJ with the same title.

This is a terrific series which aired only on the west coast CBS net. I
have most of the available episodes and am listening while I type this to
#63, 1/8/50, "Smoke Screen." the one which begins with Rocky saying "It was
the other side of midnight. . ."

I suspect that someone mislabeled another episode that Archie has.

I haven't listened to them in about a year but I seem to remember that some
episodes do have organ accompaniment and some a several-piece orchestra.

Unless someone else has a definitive answer to Archie's puzzlement, this
will give me an excuse to listen to the series once again waiting to hear
the opening line about Osiris in order to identify the episode title for
Archie.

Anyone who likes adventure/detective shows should check out Rocky Jordan.

Regards to all,
Art Funk

Subject: Any info on Rod Henrickson?

Hi all. I'm new to this site, but an old radio buff. I well remember when
there was no TV. My question: Does any one have any info on Rod Hendickson?
He was my great-uncle and raised my mom for a number of years. He started at
KTAB in Oakland, CA in 1926 (now KSFO) as an announcer. He became popular in
the Bay Area in the 1930s, and NBC moved him to New York in the mid-1940s. He
had his own 15 minute show, but his best know role was Denny on Bulldog
Drummond. He was also in an early TV soap as the "patriarch." He was
distinguished in appearence, had a slight limp, and wonderful voice. Does any
one have any info about him, especially the TV show?
