In regard to mistakes made by the New York Times in relation to the Lone
Ranger: A couple of years ago, a friend, writer Richard O'Brien sent me a
then current Times article on J. Edgar Hoover with a photo of him with a
tall, heavy-set man in a business suit wearing a black mask. He was
identified as "Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger".
I wrote the Times that the photo was in error. The man in the
photo was Brace Beemer who played the Lone Ranger on radio.
I pointed out that I had met both men, and in fact Beemer was a distant
relative of mine. The man in the photo was far taller and heavier than
Moore. Furthermore, the date on the photo was of a time before Moore had
anything to do with the role, before the TV series began. It was a
well-known and publicized fact that Hoover was a fan and friend of Beemer as
the Masked Man. The Times never ran my letter or in other way acknowledged
their mistake.
The discussion about the first name of the Lone Ranger has so
far as I have read misses the point. His first name was DELIBERATELY not
given to add to an air of mystery about the phantom rider. No name at all,
either first or last was given for many years, nor was any specific origin
given. My late friend, Redd Boggs, older than I, remembered very early
episodes that suggested the Lone Ranger without his mask could be recognized
as a famous man. Could he be one of the heroes of the Alamo who had somehow
escaped, someone like Davy Crockett or Jim Bowie? Could he be a reformed
Billy the Kid who had also somehow escaped? He couldn't be Wild Bill Hickok
or someone whose then present whereabouts were well known. This concept was
obviously dropped, in favor of the one about the lone survivor of Bryant's
Gap with which we are all familiar.

Kato became a Filipino when the US was attacked by the
Japanese and we entered World War II! Don't know the
date, however.

Subject: Red & Green, Schizophrenic Indiana
Has the Green Hornet been looking over my shoulder?
Working through a lot of my things I came across a box of WLS "Stand By"
magazines from the 1930s. Most of the covers are printed with red and black
ink. Actually there are two shades of red on different covers - one more
orange than the other red ones. Perhaps this is supposed to be orange?
A few are Green and black (notably but not solely, the week of St. Patrick's
Day - clever these Midwestern Chicagoans, yes?).
And then I came across a Yellow and black one.
I also ran into an article that years back Chicago was considering switching
to Eastern Standard time. I guess nothing came of it except to confuse their
neighbors to the south in Indiana, who've had split time personalities for
years. Did I hear recently that with April's time zone changes, Indiana is
going to make up its mind and go with either Eastern or Central? And which?
Reminds me of the old wag's tale -
Roses are Red, Violets are Blue
I'm schizophrenic, and so am I.
Any WLS guru have a comment? Thanks - Lee Munsick

when did kato become Filipino?
The answer is simple. When it was very unpopular to be Japaneses in the
United States. So lets say about the end December of 1941 or shortly there
after. "Remember Pearl Harbor" December 7, 1941 the sneak attack. Japanese
Americans were round up and sent to detainment camps for security.
Changing to Filipino's was the politically correct thing to do. We Lost the
lost the Phillipines to Japanese shortly after the war started. At that time
the Phllppines were a Territory of the United States.

Kathy asked:
i was listening to a may 5, 1938 episode of the green hornet entitled "the
political racket".
the intro by the announcer includes:
"...only kato, his faithful japanese valet knows the dual role the young
millionaire plays to strike at [removed]"
when did kato become filipino?
Kato was originally described as a Japanese on the radio program, and before
the [removed] entry into WWII, his ethnic changed to Filipino (sp?) because of
recent events involving the Japanese. The urban myth that Kato's ethnic
changed right after the bombing of the Hawaiian naval base is simply that -
an urban myth.
Terry Salomonson is an expert on the Green Hornet, and talked about it at
MANC back in September before playing an un-circulated episode of the Green
Hornet for the audience.
It also occured to me, regarding a previous posting that started a long
thread of postings, the Green Hornet combatted Communist agents during the
1950s in many episodes, a few of which I believe do exist in circulation.

Subject: Cincinnati OTR Convention
At Bob Burchett's Cincinnati OTR convention, I will be hosting an hour-long
presentation Friday morning at 10:30 featuring old-time radio in cinematic
form. These will include the following:
KORN PLASTERED IN AFRICA (1931) - A strange early sound cartoon featuring
Uncle "Don" Carney, the famous children's radio show host.
COMMAND PERFORMANCE (1944) - one of the radio broadcasts was filmed for the
theater-going audience to watch just how the skits and perormances were done
behind a microphone. Will feature Bob Hope, Betty Hutton, Lana Turner, and
Judy Garland.
PAUL FREES who will lend his voice in a few commercial advertisements.
A WWII War Bond Drive film short with Harold Peary playing the Great
Gildersleeve.
and a couple others. A couple of the film shorts I intend to play came from
16 and 35 mm masters that have never been seen in over 60 years and have
recently been transferred to DVD making them truly, "rarely-seen." I will
also bring equipment to ensure the program will be featured on a big screen
in the room, theater style, and not on a small TV screen so everyone will be
able to watch the film shorts.

The Ranger has a first name thati is for sure. I suppose someone could

Did Dan call him Uncle Hay You? Did Dan call him Uncle anything? I don't

Who, for years , spent days and nights traveling all over the South West

the dead and even had an empty grave that was suppose the Lone Ranger.
Did Tonto put names on the Grave marker? If he did what were the names?
I suggest that those who want to know the the Lone Range's name listen

I'll save you time his first Name is "Kemosabe" .That is what Tonto
called him. Maybe I spelled wrong, but that's it Kemoasbe Reid.
