CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 32
Dixieland with Mugsy, Smokey, Jelly Roll, & Satchmo
Mugsy Spanier and Smokey Montgomery & the Light Crust Doughboys take
center stage, along with Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and the New
Reformation Dixieland Band in celebration of joyful traditional jazz.
Songs include "The Pearls, "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," "Sunday,"
"Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "The Lone Star Rag," and "When the
Saints Go Marching In." Mugsy played "hot jazz," which we now call
Dixieland and largely established the style for the future with a swing
rhythm section. One version of how he got his nickname is that he
"mugged" the styles of Satchmo and King Oliver. Jelly Roll boasted that
he invented jazz, and he was certainly talented enough to have done so,
but most historians agree only in his significant influence, great
musicianship, and outstanding recordings. What we do know for sure is
that Jelly Roll, Mugsy, Louis, and Smokey all gave the world great jazz
recordings like those ready for you now. The closing theme is Bing's
jazz version of "Deep in the Heart of Texas."
Scatin' with Fathers, Brothers, & Sisters
We continue our joyful jazz celebration with varied delightful scat
singin' with a sampling of brothers, sisters, and early fathers of the
art such as Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby, and Louis Armstrong, along with
the harmony scatin' of the Boswells and 4 Boys & a Guitar (later known
as the Mills Brothers). The 4 Boys & a Guitar also bring us examples of
their early amazing jazz instrumental vocalizations, and the Dorsey
brothers join the show, along with Bunny Berigan. This set has rare
classic recordings of "Shine," "Dinah," "Tea for Two," "Just Because,"
"It's a Girl," and "The New Low Down." Gentle patience and a "goody
goody" sense of humor are required for your listening as Johnny Mercer
and Jo Stafford kick things off with a subtle bit of "hot" jazz mischief
with an intentional slightly off key "Goody Goody."

A contributor to this forum noted that in Ben Ohmart and Charles Stumpf's
"Walter Tetley: For Corn's Sake," Willard Waterman is quoted as saying Tetley
was about five-foot-three. True enough, but the book also notes that after
visiting a doctor, Tetley got some kind of injections and "shot up to about
six feet tall." Apparently, the tall Tetley that Shirley Mitchell
remembered was the post-injection Tetley.
