Subject: Those Were the Days' 43rd Anniversary Show
At the end of 2012, "Those Were the Days" (heard every Saturday on
WDCB-FM/Glen
Ellyn, IL) asked listeners to vote for their favorite series from the Golden
Age
of Radio. The final votes were received on December 31, 2012 and this
Saturday,
"Those Were the Days" will celebrate its 43rd anniversary on the air by
playing
the six top shows, as voted on by our TWTD audience! The fun begins at 1:00 pm
CST on WDCB ([removed] FM in Chicagoland, [removed] everywhere else). Incidentally,
the Top 20 vote-getters are listed in the Spring 2013 issue of Nostalgia
Digest
([removed]).
And if you're in the vicinity of Chicago and its western suburbs, you're
invited
to join us after the show on Saturday (from 6 to 7 pm) at the Framemakers, 10
N.
Cass Avenue in Westmont, for a celebratory open house featuring myself,
announcer Ken Alexander, TWTD creator Chuck Schaden, and cake! (Note: The
latter
is available on a first-come, first-served basis.) You'll find a map and
directions at [removed]).
Thanks for listening.

On p. 213-214 he notes that Roma Wine filmed the August 30, 1945
radio broadcast for promotional purposes. This film apparently exists
The filmed version of the SUSPENSE broadcast "Nobody Loves Me" starring Peter
Lorre does exist and is in color. It was just shown at the 2012 SPERDVAC
convention that I attended. However, a copy of that film is not available as
the owner won't release it. The episode is great and you get to see such
radio pros as Joseph Kearns and Wally Maher in action!

Subject: Jack Benny & Jerry Seinfeld Similarities
I know this topic is nothing new.
But it is something has always struck me about the similarities between Jack
Benny and Jerry Seinfeld.
For instance:
- BOTH were comedians
- BOTH had historically successful (legendary?) comedy programs
- BOTH surrounded themselves with a tight 'gang'
- BOTH deferred the best jokes (or lines) to their fellow cast members.
- BOTH were content to be the butt of the joke (when appropriate)
- BOTH broke down the 4th wall (Benny talked to audience, Jerry did it via
Stand Up Somedy)
- BOTH were usually the conduit for story lines
(very involving only Mary/Phil or Kramer/Elaine for example)
- BOTH involved preparing for and sometimes performing there show as part of
their situational comedy.
Even the cast member pairings
Jack Benny Jerry Seinfeld
Phil Harris Kramer
Mary Livingston Elaine Bennis
[Multiple] George Castanza
Frank Nelson, Mel Blanc Newman
Each show had a wonderfully talented second tier of actors/actresses as well.
>From Jerry's parents to Professor LeBlanc, from From the 'Soup Nazi' to
Jack's store clerk when Christmas shopping.
Talented writers like Jack Benny and Milt Josefsberg to Jerry Seinfeld and
Larry David.
Jack started doing live performances and then used the medium of the day
(Radio) and transitioned to the new medium (TV).
Jerry started with Live stand up and then used the popular medium (TV) and
eventually transitioned to the new medium (Streaming content)
What others can you think of?

On the podcast, we also include our series of programs that we call "2013 On

featuring interviews with the personalities who will be appearing at this
years REPS Showcase old time radio convention.
There are currently 6 broadcasts featuring interviews with Stan Freberg,
Gloria McMillan, Beverly Washburn, Ivan Cury, Tommy Cook and even Kate
Mcknight ( who is one of our younger performers at age 22 who as been bitten
by the radio bug ).

If you are thinking about what great fun you would have attending an Old Time
Radio Convention -- we think you would be right! We are so happy that there
are still a few conventions going that still focus on and celebrate those
Golden Days of Radio! You may have to travel if you are not living in one of
the locations where the conventions call home. Many radio fans do make that
journey and keep returning year after year. You may want to consider making
an Old Time Radio Convention part of your summer plans.
I can tell you a little bit more about one of those conventions -- The REPS
Showcase in Seattle Washington. The REPS Convention is produced by the Radio
Enthusiasts of Puget Sound and happens this June 21st to the 23rd in Bellevue
Washington (a suburb of Seattle). Among the special guests will be Stan
Freberg and his wife Hunter. 2 hours have been blocked out Saturday afternoon
for us to spend time with Stan. First, Stan will bring to the convention a
very special presentation. The presentation is then followed by a question
and answer period with the fans. Other guests appearing at the convention
will be Tommy Cook, Stuffy Singer , Terry Moore, Chuck McCann, Don and Bob
Hastings, Gloria McMillan, Beverly Washburn, Ivan Cury and others. There will
be panels ( Martin Grams will be appearing to talk about his new book on
Duffy's Tavern), interviews and performances - many of your all time
favorite shows will be brought back to the microphone with the help of music,
live sound effects and a talented cast. You can get more information by going
to the convention website at [removed].
Enjoy old time radio!
