Subject: Benny-Allen Feud and BBD&O

Alan Bell said, "at least for a time, the sponsors of both shows were
represented by the same ad agency, BBD&O, and so the 'feud' helped
cross-promote the shows"

Not during the heyday of the feud (1937-1940). BBD&O came later in the 40s
for Jack, after the feud was well-established and only periodically
referenced.

Subject: Spirit radio show

Thanks Karl, for some info on the Spirit radio program. I may have a lead
for you.

When I was attending The Ohio State University, I would periodically visit
the Cartoon Art Museum there. The museum is mostly devoted to comic strips
and the art of alumni member Milton Caniff, but they do have other items.

In going thru the collection lists (it may have been in the Shel Dorf
collection, but I don't remember for sure), I came across an item that was
labeled "Spirit radio show". I requested the item from storage. The
librarian pulled out a transcription disc, the label said it was a "Spirit
radio show". I was familiar with the Spirit and various radio shows, but had
never heard of this one, and here it was. I asked if there was anyway to
listen to or get a recording of the disc. They did not have the right
equipment, so I couldon't do anything more. I have always wondered if the
shows would ever surface.

Last time I checked, the cartoon art museum at OSU is moving to a new
location, on campus, where they will have much more room for its growing
collection. It has been many years. Maybe there is a way now, or maybe
somebody here who has the proper equipment can make a new friend with the
curator and borrow the disc?

I would love to hear it one day. I am guessing this must be the same show
you mentioned in your last post. I don't recall if there was a date on the
disc.

Subject: A month-long salute to the Golden Age of Chicago
 radio!

During the month of August, "Those Were the Days" (heard every Saturday at
[removed]) will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the City of
Chicago with four weeks' worth of classic local and national radio from the
Windy City-and the celebration begins this Saturday, August 4, with a live
remote broadcast from the new Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago!
As
part of the City of Chicago's "175 Days to Love Chicago" summer program,
you're
invited to tune in (or join us on-air) as TWTD visits the home of the National
Radio Hall of Fame and salutes some of Chicago's most legendary personalities
and shows-including Studs Terkel, Paul Harvey, Hugh Downs, Mike Wallace, Art
Hellyer, the National Barn Dance, and the First Nighter program-as they were
heard during the Golden Age of radio!

Information about attending this live broadcast is available at [removed]
or
by phone at 312-245-8200. I've also been led to believe there will be cookies.

Subject: August issue: RADIO RECALL

The PDF (full-color) version of "Radio Recall" is being dispatched via email
as of July 31st; the B& W hard copy will be mailed to our other subscribers
in two weeks.

This issue leads off with a well-researched piece by the former director of
the Broadcast Pioneers Library which destroys the myth of that "Titanic Lie"
of David Sarnoff that he picked up the distress signals of that tragic ship.
Next, Dan Riedstra takes us on a tour of the newly refurbished Museum of
Broadcast Communications in Chicago. Talented Stewart Wright has the
conclusion of his summary of the exciting series "Pursuit" in this issue.

Stan Claussen of Western Washington University uncovers the factual history
of the little-known "Orange Network." The new book on San Francisco broadcast
history, "Bay Area Radio" is reviewed by Gary Schneider. You'll also find
complete details on the Frank Nelson Poker Party Fund Raiser in Los Angeles
this September. Included in this issue is an abridged statement of the
Steering Committee of CATON as to why they cancelled their OTR convention in
Newark. Maury Cagle also has a detailed history of "The Nighthawks," the 30s
band that made radio famous.

University of Wisconsin claims the site of the "nation's first licensed
station" but a piece in this issue points out that may not be the case.
Martin Grams, Jr. relates a battle royal between Buck Jones and "King George"
Trendle as to who could legally call their horse "Silver." This issue also
has a whimsical poem about the Lone Ranger's mask, plus illustrations for
1934 radio premiums of Tom Mix that Ralston offered kiddies, including a pair
of woolly chaps (just like Tom wears!) FREE for only 35 boxtops. (Now, that's
a lotta Ralston.)

For subscription details, and/or read previous issues, go to our web site at
<[removed]> Or if you'll be at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in
Hunt Valley, MD, August 9-12, stop in on Saturday afternoon there for the
meeting of the Metro Washington OTR Club where any and all attendees receive
a complimentary copy of this August issue.

Golly folks, it doesn't get much better than [removed]
