The recent references to Anna Russell reminded me that about a year ago
I listened to a BBC radio documentary about her. (Part of a series that
also profiled Peter Schickele, The Comedian Harmonists, and Spike
Jones.) The official webpage for this show is here:

Unfortunately it is not available for streaming right now. (Most BBC
shows are up for only a week after their initial broadcast.) It's well
worth listening to if it crops up again on their schedule.

Not to make light of Bill Idelson's death, but a friend of mine sent me an
obit written as if it was for Rush, not Bill. It is quite good. If I got
it I'm thinking that others on the list might also have received it. Since
I am not sure about the apropos of posting this on the digest, I guess I'll
just offer to it anyone who e-mails me and asks for it. Unless there is a
general consensus to post it here.

Hello, again --
As a musician, I appreciate discussions of music from time to time on this
forum. I've known Peter Schickele, AKA PDQ Bach, for thirty years and he is
as funny off the stage as he is on . . . and his own inspiration was Spike
Jones, probably the least subtle of the comedians who used music as their
"shtick."
For my friend Ted Kneebone, the British cartoonist he was trying to recall
is Gerard Hoffnung, who died far too early at age 34 -- even earlier than
Mozart. He commissioned composers to write for several Hoffnung Concerts
which were then recorded on the old Angel LPs. I don't know if these have
been re-released on CD.
You can get to more information about Gerard Hoffnung by using this link:

Hi,
I'm looking for info on Victor Borge who passed away a few years ago. Of
course I already came across a few websites containing biographical info but
I'd rather have a look into a biography. I came across the info that there
was an autobiography published in 1999 but wasn't able to trace any single
copy of this particular book. Does anybody know if it really was published?
Any hint for an expert on Borge would also be appreciated. And/or does
anybody know where Borge's surviving kids are living?
Thanks,
Christian

Gerard Hoffnung is the '50s British musical humorist Ted Kneebone was
trying to recall. A direct precursor to PDQ Bach, Hoffnung was called
"the highbrow Spike Jones" by music critics. Several CDs of his work
and a bio by his widow are available.

Subject: Re: Funny opera and Gerard Hoffnung
Ted Kneebone was trying to recall the British comedian who organized music
festivals for comedic classical works.
You're thinking of Gerard Hoffnung. Originally from Germany, Hoffnung
settled in Britain and became famous as a cartoonist, tubist and public
speaker. He arranged three Hoffnung Music Festivals in the 1950s that
featured humorous works by the country's top composers. My favorite is
the 1958 Hoffnung Interplanetary Music Festival that featured works such
as "The Famous Tay Whale", which is a funny parody of some of William
Walton's works, and "Punkt Kontrapunkt", which poked fun at modern avant
garde works. The three Hoffnung concerts were available on LP in the US
on the Angel label and have been reissued on CD.
On an OTR note that is Hoffnung-related, the BBC ran a series of hilarious
five-minute interviews with Hoffnung in the 1950s. Basically, they sent a
BBC interviewer to his home and let him riff on odd subjects such as his
childhood, sports, dieting, and what he thought was on the moon. They
were issued and reissued on LP by the BBC; titles of the album in its
different incarnations include "The Importance of Being Hoffnung" and
"Hoffnung-A Last Encore". I highly recommend them if you can track them
down - they might remind you a bit of the Goons or Monty Python's surreal
humor.
