Regarding Travis' request for the best method of cleaning [removed]
simple way is probably the best way. Simply dip one end of a cotton swab in
basic rubbing alcohol and squeeze out the excess. Clean the playback and
record heads. Put the machine in Rewind or Fast Forward and clean the spindle
pin. Then put the machine in Play and clean the roller. You'll be amazed how
much gunk ends up on that thing. To ensure all the alcohol is removed so that
it doesn't damage the tape, take the dry end of the swab and go over the same
elements you just cleaned. Then let everything air-dry for a few minutes
before popping in your tape.
It's nice to know many listmates still have cassette collections and listen to
them regularly. Long live the C-60 and C-90!!

Subject: Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel - original
version
I forgot to add in yesterday's post - there's a few decrepit-sounding mp3s
of the original 1930s Flywheel series, but do high-quality .wav/CD copies
exist anywhere?
I remember in c. 1997/1998 some bare aluminums of Flywheel went on e*ay. I
think those might have been one of the eps.
By the way, I FOUND part of the Texaco Fire Chief at Terry's shop and I put
in an order.
Now, if he can add the lesser-available Barrie Craig episodes, I'll really
be set. I like very much barrie Craig, the earlier clone I Deal In Crime,
and Murder Will Out, all Gargan series.

If I'm not mistaken, "I Love A Mystery" was the predecessor of "I
Love Adventure". Yes, they both had the same characters (Jack, Doc,
and Reggie), and chronicled their exploits. "I Love A Mystery" came first.
Sorry that I can't provide the time line for each of these programs.
You'll probably get quite a few answers to your question.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Clarke

In Issue #166 Anthony Tollin advised us of the Obituary in the Guardian for
Lloyd Lamble.
It was remiss of me not to post details back in April, but I tend to forget
which Australian Actors are known in the [removed] and which are not.
Whilst Lamble was well known for many movie and Television parts, he had an
extensive radio career in Australia before he moved to the [removed]
I know that Moris Sztajer and I have him documented for 86 different major
radio plays as well as 49 different serials and series which includes the
Grace Gibson Production of The Shadow, where he played Lamont Cranston from
episode 1 - 52. It was a lot of work for what was basically a 1941 - 1949
radio career.
Reg James of Grace Gibson Production fame, remembered him fondly when he sent
me a copy of the Obituary which appeared in the Sydney newspapers. The
reality is that there are so few of the people involved in Australian Radio
from the 1940's still with us now.

Actually, (DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES) wasn't quite Collyer's swan song as
Superman. Collyer voiced Superman again in the mid-1960s in Saturday
morning animated cartoons.
He did indeed.
I believe it was Filmation's first show? And though the poor animation was
only what Chuck Jones called "illustrated radio," Bud was joined by Jack
Beck,
and the still-with-us Joan Alexander. That's where I first heard Collyer in
the role, and I still think he's one of the best.
Happy holiday,

off (or "on", for that matter) within one foot of the playback/record

I think I video recorded his talk or if I didn't someone in the club
did and it should be the clubs library. I'll have to check my tapes.

Ayone on this list know anything about NBC's pre WW II experimatal TV
broadcasts in the New York area in the late 1930s? or specifically when the
drama "Dark Eyes Mean Danger" was broadcast? Or biographical information
about "NBC television announcer" Betty Goodwin (presumably not the same Betty
Goodwin who was an artist from Canada)?
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Subject: Re: A Rocky Jordan mystery
I went ahead and posted the mysterious episode of "Rocky Jordan" on my
blog/podcast so folks can give it a listen and see if anyone has ideas. I
was hoping to have more definite info for the commentary in the blog post
before it went live, but folks may need to hear the show and need
additional data before speculating on its origins.
[removed]
I compared it to other Rocky episodes at [removed] from various runs of
the show over the years and this one is very different in its production
style. To me, it sounds like the original, before AFRTS got hold of it,
was sustaining. It me of something Mutual might do, rather than CBS.
Another otr subscriber suggested it might be a rehearsal, but I'm not sure
why AFRTS would run a rehearsal, rather than the regular broadcast
episode.
Very odd.
Anyway, post some comments here on the list or on the blog if you have
ideas where this show originated.

My other favorite TV reference is "The TV Schedule Book," by Harry
Castleman and Walter J. Podrazik. (Harry Castleman, BTW, as a law
student, did an internship with me in the summer of 1980. We
frequently spent too much time talking about television and radio
when we should have been working.)

It is interesting to find this connection between us, but I'm one up on you.
I had both Harry and Wally as students of mine. I taught them audio
production. The following year I was manager of the Northwestern Univ
station when the two of them took over a whole weekend to air every recording
the Beatles had been known at that time to have recorded. They later wrote
their first book on the subject of Beatles bootlegs and pirates, "All
Together Now." They were Beatles-struck at that time and I didn't notice any
special interest in broadcasting history in them. I wish I had, I could have
sure used their help in the Northwestern Radio Archive. But they probably
got their love of broadcasting history from our favorite professor, Dr.
Martin J. Maloney. We loved his broadcasting history class, especially
because he had been there. He had penned some scripts for "Americana" and
"Mr. First Nighter" in the late 40s.
