Many of you would have met Steve, through the years, at many of the
various movie cons around the New York area, and elsewhere.
Many more of you read his movie and nostalgia articles, over the last
three decades.

Steve and I weren't particularly close, but I thought I should get the
word [removed]

(Along the way, we wrote for some of the same magazines; some of you
know Steve was a rather ardent fantasy film historian.)

Sadly, Steve apparently passed away in October, but it didn't seem to
become known until March--

And some of us didn't find out, until a week ago.
Steve's articles appeared in STARLOG, FANGORIA, some Marvel Comics mags,
and many other outlets, as well as, most recently, some DVD movie
editions.

The Montrose Daily Press runs a nostalgic column that mentions several OTR
personalities, including a purported quote from Jack Benny on the transition
to television: "It isn't great, we try to keep it from being lousy."

Subject: It was a Bold but Rocky Fortune Venture

Hi,

I'm sure others will elaborate with much greater detail, but it was asked why
Bogey, Bacall and Frankie agreed to forego their lucrative films careers for
[removed] [removed] both series came at very NON-lucrative points in their
respective careers. Frank had been dropped by his label and lost his music
variety show. He was at the bottom of the well professionally (and
financially) in 1951. By all accounts he didn't enjoy doing Rocky but it was
a decent paycheck. While "From Here to Eternity" came out in '53, it wasn't
until '54 that its positive impact was truly felt on Frank's career. When he
"re-emerged" as a legitimate actor (no longer the teenage heartthrob), in
1954, he dropped Rocky immediately.

Bogey and Bacall had similar circumstances. Bogart's career was really
languishing in the late '40's, thanks in part to his troubles in front of the
House Un-American Committee. So Bogey and his young bride started Santana
Productions in 1948 and although their company produced some critically
accalimed pictures (Sierra Madre as an example), the company was never a
financial success. In 1951, when Santana was in dire straights, Ziv offered
the couple $4-K a week to do Bold Venture. Pretty good money for a couple of
hours of work. They'd come in, record two or three shows, and then be on
their way to the bank to cash Ziv's check. Plus the recording sessions could
be set up in such a way to fit in to their schedule (Bogey was filming
African Queen at about this time.) Bacall didn't talk about Bold Venture at
all in her bio. I don't think they particularly enjoyed doing the show, but
it was a decent paycheck that came at just the right time. They even took
the option of recording the extra half -season, for a total of 78 episodes,
even though they didn't have to. If you're hungry enough, anything looks
good.

I am looking for a radio program that I heard some years ago. I don't know
the name of the program but thisepisode was about 2 women trapped in an
apartment building and the lights went out. The whole episode was built on
this and it was a mystery. Like I said, I don't know the name of the show. I
have tried looking in the web, but can't find anything. I don't know if it's
a Lights Out episode or Suspence or what. Can you please help me find this
episode. Thanks

I need help with OTR-related pronunciations here at Talking Books. 1) Did "The
Singing Lady" Ireene Wicker pronounce her first name EYE-reen (like the song
"Goodnight, Irene") or eye-REE-nee (like British actor Irene Worth). 2) A
line of text in a book reads "During World War II, the [removed] Army built a
primitive recorder called a Tapak." We went with the pronunciation "TAYP-ak,"
invoking the word "tape," but we could be mistaken. Any help from the ether
would be immensely appreciated.

BTW, I just learned that Ireene Wicker was the sister-in-law of industrialist
Armand Hammer. Who'd've thnk it.

That's about the size of it.

In reference to Wayne Johnson's question about references to the Johnny
Dollar program in the story line, the first instance I can find is in "The
Blooming Blossom Matter", aired on 1/20/1957. For the remainder of the run,
there were a number of references to Johnny's radio programs.

In "The Winsome Widow Matter", Pat McCracken calls Johnny while he is in
Hollywood conferring with Jack Johnstone about the program.

I don't know if any other serial di this to the extent that YTJD did, but it
did add an air of reality to a fictional world.

Kenneth Clarke asked for help locating radio stations that play OTR shows. Try
the following three web sites. If anyone knows of other sites that will help
locate OTR broadcasts, please submit the information to the Digest. Here is a
Radio Locater web site:
[removed];s=T&state=KS&format=&band=
What you see is when I entered only kansas(KS) in search box. You will want to
add you city location as well, of course. You can then access each nearby
station web site(if online) to determine programming. Here is another old time
radio station list, although it has not been updated for since September 13,
2005: [removed] And here is the web site for
"when Radio Was" with host Chuck Schaden: [removed] Notice
that it has a locater for stations that broadcast Chuck's program. However, in
the past I have found the information to be outdated. Hopefully it has been
updated. Hope these prove of some use to you. Regards,Ron
