Subject: African Americans on early OTR
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative

The only roles I recall being played (and well, I might add) on OTR
were those of Birdie Lee Coggins ("The Great Gildersleeve) and Beulah
("Fibber McGee and Molly") among a few others. It seems to me that
almost all of the roles written for black and African American actors were
those of servants. Granted, the lines they were given provided us with a
wealth of laughter. I've yet to find any show where these actors were in the
roles of, say, a neighbor or close friend. Why?

And while we're on the subject, why weren't the roles of "Amos n Andy"
played by black/African American actors? I've seen photos of the actors
who portrayed them and they were both Caucasian. Was there such a bias
in radio at the time against actors of color?

I also realize that some of the members of this list may want to
mention
"The Beulah Show". This is true, but there were very few other OTR shows
where the main characters were 'characters of color'. At least, not that I
am aware of. If there were, please enlighten me.

Another OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Bwana Devil "in thrilling color"

The poster for Bwana Devil stated "in THRILLING COLOR" which is what I
remember from
55 years ago, I can't recall the story line or much else other than people
getting stirred up
when dancers feet and tips of held spears seemed to be inches from our
eyes.

I recall a sepia toned movie with Audery Totter that was thrown together
in 3D which was
forgettable including title that included a roller coast ride and an
operation where there
surgical instruments where slowly emerging from the screen.

At the end of "Same TTime Same Station," this week is a broadcast of
"The Chicago Theater Of The Air," with the production of "The Merry
Widow." I found this enjoyable but in the beginning was interested
in the talk given by Colnel Robert McCormick. Jerry says he owned
WGn. Who was he?

Robert McCormick ran and was the editor of the Chicago Tribune, which
owned, and still owns, WGN radio and TV. WGN=World's Greatest Newspaper. He
was a very powerful man in Chicago politics.

His estate was turned into a museum, military library and immaculate flower
garden in accordance with terms of his will. Until her retirement,
McCormick's Tribune secretary conducted the tour at his enormous home. The
first time I toured the home, I was the only visitor and we had a two hour
long conversation about Robert McCormick, the Tribune and Republican
politics. It was so long ago that I have forgotten most of what she said.

McCormick was the grandson of Joseph Medill who was one of the founders of
the Republican Party and through Tribune editorials and influence succeeded
in getting the nomination of Abraham Lincoln to the Republican Presidential
campaign. Like his grandson, Medill ran the Tribune. Medill was elected
mayor of Chicago after the great fire and is credited in restoring business
confidence in the city's future.

The Tribune under Medill and McCormick was strongly Republican. Their
influence extended to city, state and national politics.

I can't believe I missed House of Wax in 3 D until many years later.
I could only imagine the effect of the paddle ball whizzing towards the

A famous character in many ways, was Col McCormick. He owned the Chicago
Tribune, and you can learn a good deal about the fellow's personality if you
go visit the titanic building he built for it, right on Michigan Avenue.
Embedded in its stonework near street level is a famous stone from
everywhere in the world that he considered famous: a piece of the Great Wall
of China, a bit of Roman road, a small portion of Notre Dame cathedral, that
sort of thing including, in a special window, a tiny pebble from the moon.
A niche contains a temporarily life-sized bronze statue of Nathan Hale on
his way to a suspended sentence. The lobby is something like four stories
tall, with walls carved with inscriptions about freedom of the press, and
murals, and a huge clock that they finally got working last time I checked.

Like Teddy Roosevelt, he was a poor speller, and kampaynd for simplifyd
speling of English. (Nowt that yoo reely don't need the letter 'C' for
eneething.) I think he may have tried using it in the Tribune, but nobudee
cood reed wut hee wuz riting abowt.

Others, I'm sure, will tell you much more about the gentleman, including how
he became a Col., which I don't know.

Someone asked why the Let's Pretend story was titled Snowdrop instead of Snow
White. The Let's pretend script was adapted from the German Grimm's Brothers'
tale and not the Disney film. The story is titled "Sneewittchen" not "Snee
Weiss". You can translate that different [removed] Drop, I guess, being one.
It's just the diminutive of snow white. Check this link:

My favorite story related to this subject is from my high school German class
back in the "60s. We came to the famous poem the wicked queen uses to reach
the spirit in the mirror:

'Spieglein, Spieglein an der Wand,
wer ist die Schvnste im ganzen Land?'

Our teacher, Mr. Higgins, said this translates as:

Mirror, Mirror on the wall,

Who's the fairest in the entire area.

God bless,

Leslie Feagan
