Subject: AFRS Commercials
11-10-08
Last Friday, I talked with my wife's uncle who's a retired Air Force
colonel (originally enlisted with the Army Air Corps) who was,
eventually, the chief engineer for AFRS in Western Europe, having worked
with them throughout WWII, then after the war and during the Berlin
Airlift (where he also flew airlift missions as a pilot) and on through
1957. One of his jobs was either the editing out of those commercials,
or the overseeing of the editing. He said that the reason behind it was
that the military decided that it was not their place to endorse any
particular products. Back then, of course, the product promotion was
often intricately interwoven with the program material, and the task
wasn't an easy one if the editor wanted to maintain the continuity of the
programs.
Regards,
Jim Arva

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
My son and I finished listening to Jerry at Fairoaks this weekend and
were pretty disappointed with the ending. Every log I can find online
says that episode 65 is the final episode, but it's a cliffhanger - the
plot isn't tied up the way the plot of Jerry of the Circus was tied up.
Since 65 episodes is about half of what exists of Jerry of the Circus, I
was wondering if Fairoaks was canceled mid-stream or if, perhaps, the
balance of the show just isn't available? Is there any way to tell if
further episodes were broadcast?
We really loved this show, right up to the end, and it would be nice to
know if more episodes were broadcast. At least that would give us hope
that they might show up some day.
Thanks!

Subject: Charles Frederick Lindsley
Hopefully I spelled his name right. I'm currently listening to the
1932 edition of "The Deerslayer," and notice two things. 1 This was
not a network broadcast but rather syndicated and 2 no dates on the
series what so ever. It makes it quite mysterious. First off who
was Charles Frederick Lindsley and are there any actors in the series
who have been picked up as recognizable in otr? Meaning would I know
them from later shows? Finally was this program transcribed and sent
to stations then for their own use to be played at individual
times? I know that Leatherstocking Tales also includes Last Of The
mohicans. Did they do any more in that series? Thanks Matt

Subject: AFRS commercial [removed]
Paul mentions an account he read from one of the Army brass involved with
AFRS that the shows were initially transmitted with commercials via
shortwave and that they were deleted for morale reasons.
Personally, I'd like to see more than just this one source for a couple of
reasons.
First off, Paul mentions that the sponsors were really happy that their
commercials were reaching troops. However, I can think of someone who
wouldn't be happy - the networks.
Both NBC and CBS operated commercial shortwave services before and during
the early days of the War. The programming consisted of material in
languages for the target area and shows from the network line. I can't
imagine the networks would have been happy about this kind of competition
from AFRS.
Second, I'd like to see something from the Federal Register and
legislative records about the formation of AFRS. I just don't think
Congress would have been happy about government facilities being used to
broadcast advertising. (Distribution of magazines to troops was a
different matter - the government isn't paying for the paper, ink and
printing.)
According to material I've read on AFRS and it's current incarnation, AFN,
the only time commercials have been allowed in programming has been during
the Super Bowl because of the wide interest in the advertising that is
premiered during the broadcast.

On Mon, 10 Nov 2008 Don Shenbarger wrote about the Best Organ On The Air?
It reminded me of that wonderful New York organist, Rosa Rio, who provided
the wonderful organ music for all the great soaps and other shows originating
in New York.
You can hear an interview with Rosa Rio by Dick Bertel, and some of her fine
playing, recorded in her home in 1971 by yours truly when Dick and I worked
