Subject: Contrived OTR Interviews

While I have my own issues with "History Detectives", may I remind you
that all of the interviews with civilians on Fred Allen's programs were
pre-scripted. Network Standards and Practices frowned on ad-libs --
they had enough trouble with Fred with his scripted material!! (Of
course all that flew up into the rafters when Mr. Ramshaw decided to get
a close up view of the Art Deco lighting fixtures at Rockefeller
Center.) When Rudy Vallee interviewed George Gershwin on the "Fleishman
Yeast Hour" he stated he had sat down with George earlier that afternoon
and jotted down his answers during their conversation -- and the two of
them proceeded to read Q&A from the scripts.

One of the reasons Edward R. Murrow left CBS was that when the quiz show
scandal broke during his year off and Charles Collingwood was doing
Person to Person, CBS wanted Collingwood to mention that the interviews
were pre-arranged. Murrow heard this when he arrived in London and went
off the deep end that CBS would dignify the accusation that PtoP was
"rigged" by even discussing the matter. Of course the Q&A was planned
so they could efficiently tour the house in an orderly fashion. Any
idiot would know that (which actually counts out the FCC, Congress, and
network execs since they are sub-idiots!!)

As to my issues with History Detectives, actually it seems like they may
have somehow read my prior accusations, because the shows this year have
been better. In earlier seasons they really asked dumb questions and
went to many dead-ends. I often wrote that they should use a real
expert instead -- but that would turn it into a documentary. While not
changing the purpose of the program, they are not acting as dense at the
beginning, and are making it a point to ask the CORRECT experts first.
As a researcher myself I know that I do not know everything but that it
is more important to be able to know where to find the facts and who ARE
the experts. Researchers don't work off the top of their head. Even
if they think they know it, they check it out. My self-advice for over
40 years has been "I know that fact, but WHY do I know that fact?" That
is why I have a research library and have occasionally referenced and
double checked in a dozen books and items to even just answer and post
here on the OTR-Digest. That is why the postings of people like
Elizabeth and Martin and Jim W, and Jim C and some others are so
authoritative -- they do it too.
