Subject: Marian Anderson's Lincoln Memorial Concert

I recently discovered film footage of Marian Anderson's Easter Sunday 1939
concert at the Lincoln Memorial. I've heard that NBC (I think it's the
Blue Network) broadcast at least part of this performance. Does anyone
know if this broadcast is available?

Don't trust news paper spelling !! Jay Leno, on the Tonight show, for years
on Monday has a segment he call "Headlines" People send him newspaper
clipping of mistakes and misspelled heading and he reads them and it make a
good comedy segment. Jay reads a fouled up head lineand often asks the
question, doesn't anyone proof read? He is not short of material.

Barrie and Barry is kind of different because either spelling is used as a
first name or last name as Elaine Barrie or Wendy Barrie. There are others
with last names of Barry, such as Norman , Jack, Peter and so on. In the
40's a Soap Opera was "Barry Cameron". A guy could be named Barrie Barry,
isn't that a disease, or it could be Barrie Barrie or even Barry Barry. How
does one know the correct spelling unless you ask or are told.

Subject: More Dragnet
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Verily, I've been enjoying the discourse here set off by one of my favourite
post-ers, Chris "Castile" Holm about crooked cops on "Dragnet." "Mr. Dragnet"
himself ,
Michael Hayde, chimed in with an astute follow-up, as did Rick Keating and
Dixon Hayes. When Michael included a transcription of Joe Friday's "bad cop"
speech, I wanted to cheer--not just Jack Webb, but also my pal "Draggie."
Bravo!

I've always been a fan of patriotic speeches even if I don't necessarily
agree with the message. One of my all-time favourite LPs is Victor Lundberg's
"An Open Letter" [but I digress]. If Mr. Hayde or anybody else were to put
out a book including Jack Webb's/Sgt. Friday's greatest speeches and
discourses, I'd buy it. I know this is easier said than done being that rights
would have to be cleared with MCA-Universal TV, or whomever owns/controls
"Dragnet" at present, but I'd think such a book's editor would be able to turn
brisk sales as anybody who has a cop in the family might be apt to buy a
copy.

BTW, Michael Hayde and I are going to be presenting the panel "A Humourous
Look at Dragnet" at both Martin Grams's [removed] in September and at FOTR in
October although we haven't yet decided if "humourous" will be spelled with
two "U's" or three). At present, we are assembling clips of noted Dragnet
parodies & tributes. What we need at the moment are:
1) the title(s) of the Three Stooges (w/ Shemp) "Dragnet" parodies,
especially the one where Moe chisels "The End" onto Larry's scalp a la "Mark
VII";
2) video, or at least, audio of Jack Benny's last TV special (1974) which was
also the last time Webb & Morgan appeared in character as Friday & Gannon;
3) video of "the Jack Benny Program" (TV) from the late 1950s which
guest-starred Webb;
4) the c. 1976 "Saturday Night Live" parody in which Dan Ayckroyd and Eric
Idle perform "Dragnet"...in drag!;
5) the title of "The Simpsons" episode which was a parody of "Thelma &
Louise" which contained a send-up of the concluding Dragnet police blotter
update
(w/ George Fenneman doing his familiar narration);
6) the Woody Woodpecker cartoon called "Bunco Busters" w/ the running gag "If
Woody had gone to the [removed]," plus any other Woody parodies.

In the same vein, Mike and I hosted a similar "Jack Benny in Cartoons"
seminar at FOTR a couple of years ago and had a lot of fun with it. So if
anybody here on the Digest can help us out with the aforementioned clips,
please contact me derek@[removed] <mailto:derek@[removed]; or Michael Hayde at
michaelhayde@[removed] <mailto:michaelhayde@[removed]; off-list.

That's about the size of it.

Subject: RADIO RECALL: June issue

The June issue of RADIO RECALL is back from the printer and will soon
be mailed to all subscribers. This jam-packed 12 page issue leads off
with Jim Cox's article, "The Brotherhood of the Airways" in which he
details the careers of OTR's famous brothers, including Don & Jim
Ameche, the Fleming brothers, Wendell & Ken Niles, etc. Columnist Jim
Snyder provides a summary of the history of "Cavalcade of America"
while Fred Fett shares his insight into how ten-year old boys in WW II
managed to assemble Jack Armstrong's toy Piper Cub Pre-Flight Kit.

Also in this issue, OTR (and baseball) researcher Cort Vitty explains
how to do OTR research on "ProQuest", accessing hundreds of major
newspapers from the past. Ron Sayles comes to the defense of OTR
author, Gerald Eskenazi and his new book, "I Hid It Under the Sheets."
Finally the editor provides an historical perspective on the "Tokyo
Rose" myth and proves that Iva Toguri was innocent. He concludes the
piece by urging OTR fans to send her birthday greetings on July 4th, at
which time this valiant lady, still alive and living in Chicago, will
be 90 years old.

Subject: Batman and Superman "Unmasked"

There have been many postings recently regarding Batman and Superman finally
knowing each others true identity. And the big question seems to be if Robin
was in on the secret.

Guess what?, I haven't a clue. But what I do have is a big coincidence.

At the upcoming REPS Convention in Seattle, (June23-24) I have the pleasure
of directing recreations of two episodes of "Superman" ...(in which he saves
Batman and Robin from certain death). And, as it happens, these specific
Superman episodes contain dialogue between the Man of Steel and the Caped
Crusader that relates to Robin not having a clue about Superman's identity,
and Bruce Wayne and Kent sort of tease Robin about the secret they both
share.

The "powers that be" have assembled a great cast for me to boss around.
Donald Buka, an incredibly gifted and versatile OTR actor from NY will play
Batman.
Tommy Cook (A West Coast favorite will play Robin
Rosemary Rice, my pal from the "Archie Days" will play the wicked villainess
And guess who will be playing Superman? The man of "Stone" ([removed])

But the thing I'm most excited about is that I'll also be directing a very
funny episode of "Duffy's Tavern" at the Saturday night banquet. And again,
(somebody up there likes me) I'm blessed with a superb cast of OTR and Show
Biz veterans that will be a joy to work with.

If you live anywhere close to Seattle ( by that I mean the Continental
United States) and have never attended an OTR Convention, I sincerely
recommend you try to sign up for one. It's laced with great talent.

One of the highlights of this recreation of "Duffy's" will be the appearance
of a performer who just happened to be a cast member on some of the original
"Duffy's Tavern" [removed] who went on to stardom in TV. None other
than an old Child Actor buddy of mine, Dick Van Patten of "Eight is Enough"
fame. He's playing "Morton", "Archie's" nephew.

Frank Buxton, another super actor (and former TV director), not to mention a
very funny [removed] will also be aboard as "Finnigan"

Other pros from the West Coast area will play major roles, like the
perennial OTR Convention favorite, Gil Stratton as "Archie". Then too, we'll
have very talented "currently working radio performers" from the Seattle
area to play major roles, such as Larry Albert as "Fats, and Pat French as
"Archie's love [removed]"[removed]". .I mean, super talented people.
Then we'll have a newcomer to the ranks of OTR performers who I discovered
lurking among the REPS members. Not only is Penny Swanberg an avid OTR fan,
but quite talented (and funny) as "Miss Duffy".

If there's any interest on your part to finally get to attend an OTR
Convention to see and meet some OTR pros, this will be a good one to
experience. And it's quite reasonably priced. For further info, you might
wish to contact Mike Sprague (one of the Convention organizers) at
<HRRMIKES@[removed];

See you there?
