Subject: Sandra Michael: S. O. S.

I
In February of 2000, I had the good fortune to have
interviewed the talented lady who wrote two of the most respected day
time series (she disdained calling them "soap operas") .

The lady was Sandra Michael. The
programs: AGAINST THE STORM and LONE JOUIRNEY.

Having recently spent some very enlightening time, reviewing
the text of a book focusing on the ORAL HISTORY of Radio's Golden Age
with a very thorough and extrremely helpful editor, who wanted to know why
Ms Michael was the only person whose interview appears minus a year
of birth and, wheh appropriate a year of death.

Throwing myself upon the mercy of my kind editor, I reviewed the many
efforts, Google, Ron Sayles, refernce books, etc. All,without success

I have not seen any notice of her having passed on and, god
willing, she may still be enjoyng the blessings of life. There is
always the possibility that, if she is deceased, an obituary may
exist under a marriied name (of which I have no clue)

And so, good radio fans, should any among you have the
Sherlokian abioity to reveal the birty year and if, [removed]
year she passed on,,,,,,,you wiil save me from one more imperfection

Subject: Mr. Carroll

I had the distinct pleasure to see him at mic (wish I'd been behind one,
not in front of it!) at the recreation of the Benny radio program at FOTR a
few years ago that M. Gwynne mentioned.

Speaking as someone who's done both, I can tell you that it's one thing to
do a decent job recreating a SHOW - and quite another thing to recreate an
iconic celebrity. (The wiser recreation directors know this, and approach
the task with considerable caution.)

And Eddie was simply BRILLIANT at it. Because he was not just a talented
Voice man, he was a very good actor (we've all seen failed performances that
catch the Sound, but not the Presence.)

And when I said that to him afterwards, he was graciously thankful. It
seems he was, by every account, a sweet man. And the older I get, the more I
know that in the long run, Great Heart even trumps Great Work.

Rest to him, and comfort to his loved ones.

Subject: John Forsythe/"Sgt. Preston"

Andy Blatt wanted to remind us that before "Charlie's Angels" and "Dynasty"
John Forsythe played "Bachelor Father" on TV. If it's any consolation, Andy,
the first thing I thought of when I heard of Mr. Forsythe's passing was,
indeed, "Bachelor Father." It just goes to show you that OTR fans have more
affinity for the television that coincided with the OTR era.

This reminds me of a story and I want to apologise from the get-go for this
being a retread. Several years ago on this forum, I had read of the death of
actor Richard Simmons, best remembered for his lead role in the TV version of
"Sgt. Preston of the Yukon." I mentioned this to a co-worker "Didja hear
Richard Simmons died?" When I went on saying words to the effect of "he was
great as Sergeant Preston," said co-worker asked for some clarification being
that he was thinking of the latter-day exercise guru with the same name. This
all culminated in him remarking "When you said Richard Simmons died, I
thought you were talking about THE Richard Simmons."

I shot back "I was!"

That's about the size of it --

Subject: RE: Eddie Carroll

Hello,

I am a long time lurker on this list. This is my first post.

I met Eddie Carroll at the REPS Convention in Seattle last year. This was my
first OTR convention.

Mr. Carroll's impersonation was dead on and he was a consummate professional.
But I really remember is how engaged he was with the fans. I asked him for
his autograph early on and he remembered my name the whole weekend. He
remembered EVERYONE's name.

I count myself lucky that I got to meet someone who knew so many stars of
days gone by. It was also nice to meet an individual who was such a class act.

I wish that I could have seen more of him performing, though. Mr. Carroll,
you will be missed.

Jay

I am the Publisher/Editor of an in-house newspaper for a small Company based
in California with reps scattered throughout the US. The newspaper
is an 8-page tab, 4 color, monthly publication. In addition to the normal
information for the managers, representatives and home office staff, I
include a half-page feature which I call "Triviology". Over the past 10
years, and to give you an idea what Triviology is all about, some of the
subjects were: Academy Awards, Music of the 80's, The Final Frontier, Colleges
& Universities, Computer Lingo, Super Bowl, Rivers, National Parks, [removed]

Not being too much a fan of commercial TV, I thought it would be great to have
a quiz on shows like Red Skelton, Fibber McGee & Molly, Burns & Allen, Lucy
and on and on.

Therefore, I am seeking the basic information on the Golden Years of Radio in
printed form - not more than the program's star, guest stars, other actors in
the cast, etc. I use a total of 13 questions in an edition, and would only do
the subject once. I never repeat.

Can you be of assistance?

Regards,

Tony Scaran

 From Those Were The Days

4/11

1921 The first live sports event on radio took place this day over
KDKA. Pittsburgh sports writer, Florent Gibson, gave an account of the
action in the lightweight boxing match between Johnny Ray and Johnny Dundee.

1943 Nick Carter, Master Detective debuted on Mutual.

4/12

1932 The thrill comedy, Joe Palooka, which would also be a popular
comic strip, made its debut on CBS.

1935 - "Your Hit Parade" premiered.

4/17

1933 Backed by the On the Trail portion of the magnificent Grand
Canyon Suite, Johnny Roventini, pillbox hat and all, uttered the words
"Call for Philip Morris" for the first time on radio. The famous phrase
was said in perfect B flat pitch and tone to perfectly match the
accompanying music. This "Call for Philip Morris" phrase became one of
the most famous in all of advertising.

1935 People gathered around to listen for the first time to what would
become the ultimate horror show on NBC, Lights Out.

Hello all,

I am more of a reader than a poster but I just wanted to say something.

I call the Marion Palace Theater in Ohio to get a ticket for Eddie's show at
the first part of March for his April 11,2010 show.
I was so excited to get front row seats for the show, I could not believe my
luck. No sooner did I get the ticket in the mail, the phone rings and it's
the theater telling me that Eddie would not be able to do the show because he
had hurt his back. I was bummed but nothing could prepare me for the shock of
his death. I was very shocked and could only think
NO WAY! I never got to see Eddie Carroll do his Jack Benny but I bet that it
would have been a night to remember. RIP Eddie

Subject: Radio books find new home

I'm pleased to announce that Ben Ohmart of Bear Manor Books has
acquired the inventory of OTR books that Susan and I published as
part of our Book Hunter Press publishing endeavor.

The exchange became necessary after Susan decided to run for office
in 2009 and was elected to serve as our town's full time mayor. I've
lost a business partner; the town has gained the services of a
dedicated and efficient public servant -- and are books could not
have found a better home.

The titles now in Ben's good hands include:

1) The Witch's Tale, 13 scripts from radio's first horror program
2) Flashgun Casey, Crime Photographer: From the pulps to radio and beyond
3) Radio and the Jews: The untold story of how radio influenced
America's image of the Jews, 1920s-950s/
4) A Resource Guide to the Golden Age of Radio: A guide to special
collections, bibliography and the internet
5) Radio Scripts in Print: Books Featuring 1,700 golden age of radio Scripts
