According to everything I have read, Mr Webb had both a good sense
of humor. I can also attest to that because there was always this
rumor around Hollywood that Jack wore red socks and nothing but.
This can't be right. He wouldn't have been able to appear on
television if he wore nothing but socks. He always was fully clothed
whenever I saw him on TV. ;->

From Those Were The Days --
7/30
1937 - The American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was organized. It
was part of the American Federation of Labor. The union was for all
radio performers except musicians. The union later became The American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to include TV folk,
as well.
1942 - Stage Door Canteen was first heard on CBS. The show was broadcast
from New York City and 500 servicemen were entertained each week by
celebrities who freely donated their time for the war effort.
7/31
1933 -- listeners turned up the radio on this day to hear the announcer
introduce "Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy!" The show was one of
the longest-running adventure programs on radio, continuing until 1951.
8/4
1921 - The first tennis match on radio was broadcast on KDKA in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This was a natural since KDKA was the first
commercial radio station in the United States. Within eight months the
powers that be figured out that sports on radio would bring in big sales
revenues. And so, the Davis Cup match between Great Britain and
Australia was aired on the radio; but much to the wonderment of KDKA's
listeners. Tennis anyone? On radio? It rates right up there with radio
wrestling or, maybe, [removed]
1927 - Station 2XAG, later named WGY, the General Electric station in
Schenectady, NY, began experimental operations from a 100,000-watt
transmitter. Later, the FCC regulated the power of AM radio stations to
not exceed 50,000 watts on 'clear channels' (where few, if any, stations
would cause interference with each other).
1940 - Crime Doctor introduced a new kind of radio hero to audiences.
The CBS program presented Dr. Benjamin Ordway, the show's main
character, who was a victim of amnesia. He once was a criminal, but got
hit on the head, and suddenly began to work as a crime fighter. Nice twist.
8/5
1921 - KDKA in Pittsburgh, PA did the first play-by-play broadcast of a
baseball game. Harold Arlin described the action as the Pirates beat
Philadelphia 8-5.
1935 - Backstage Wife was first aired, on MBS.

Subject: Farm news/Ask the Dust
Jumping back to the farm news discussion:
Robert Towne's ASK THE DUST (2006) is now available on DVD. Based on
John Fante's autobiographical novel, the film is a remarkable
recreation of Los Angeles in 1933 (yet filmed almost entirely in
South Africa):
[removed]
The opening of the film has a voiceover frost warning from the 1930s
Fruit Frost Service, which Towne says aired nightly from Pomona at
sign off. Presumably, the voice is that of Floyd D. Young, the
original Fruit Frost Service broadcaster:

A brief Walter Winchell opening is heard elsewhere in the film.

A bit of trivia. I've just finished the "Sign of the Book', the 4th book
in the 'Bookman' Cliff Janeway series by John Dunning. Dunning pays tribute
to an OTR great by naming one of the characters, a good guy, a kind lawyer
in a small Colorado town -- Parley.

A. Frank Bresee features his two part interview with Harold Parry
I hope I am replying to this thread in the digest correctly.
I read this with interest as I am a big fan of Harold Peary. I am going
through the Gildersleeves in chronological order, and am now up to Peary's
last season as Gildersleeve. It will be strange hearing someone else taking
on that role.
Anyway, I got this message this morning, apparently a day late to hear the
Frank Bresee interview with Harold Peary. Is there some way to hear that
interview? Will it be rebroadcast?
Thanks for any info. I enjoy being a silent lurker on this list, but this
one made me de-lurk for a moment.

Subject: Big Broadcast - Cincinnati area
When we last heard, all of the old time radio at WVXU in Cincinnati
(over 10-15 hours per week) was going away because WVXU had sold their
licenses to another Cincinnati station who chose not to continue the
programs.
Well, I am pleased to say that much of it is back on a new low powered
station in the area - WMKV [removed] FM. Not much help to those outside the
area, but the station streams very very good audio of all of the
programs. So check out the media stream if you have a highspeed
connection. One of the programs include the four hour Big Broadcast
program with Mike Martini (who occasionally contributes to this digest)
and Mark Magistrelli.
