Subject: Internet Radio Database

Okay, as I previously stated, I kept posting on the Internet Movie
Database's "Contributors' Message Board" about how great it would be if
even just a handful of radio shows were added to the IMDb, creating
links from film actors to radio shows. Here then is the non-negotiable
response to me from the IMDb about my suggestion:

If there's no visual component, it's outside the scope of what we
choose to focus on. This is clearly the case for radio plays. If we
accepted radio work (aside from as "other works"), then we'd have to
accept books on tape, and audio CDs, and eventually, we'd end up trying
to catalog all recorded audio works. Sorry, *way* outside the scope.
There's much more than enough work waiting for us to get to it just
within our existing [removed];<

With all that established, I now ask: Why is there no Internet Radio
Database?

The IMDb began about 15 years ago as a few lists posted on Usenet in the
[removed] newsgroup by 23-year-old Col Needham and a few other
film fans. In 1993 it became a WWW database from Cardiff University. By
1994, the set-up was designed so volunteer editors could review the
submissions/corrections/additions entered by any user. By 1996, Needham
and his volunteers were able to quit their day jobs. Currently, the IMDb
is about to expand its TV series information into what I gather will be
individual pages for each TV series episode.

So here's my question: Why doesn't someone create the Internet Radio
Database (with the IMDb as a model) in order to centralize and hyperlink
the pool of information available from the assembled roundtable of radio
experts? Even if launched with only three radio series (one drama, one
comedy, one variety), the submission of info from expert users would
soon demonstrate the value. Other series could then be added on a
regular basis -- with a constant flow of expert user corrections and
additions.

Subject: Early TV fictional character

How about John Brown as "Digger" O'Dell the friendly
undertaker. He certainly was an early crossover from
radio as he appeared in the Life of Riley with Jackie
Gleason in the late 40's. I do not believe he ever was
in the Bendix TV Riley series.

No, the "Digger" character was missing from the Bendix TV series. I've recently
been transferring a lot of the Life of Riley TV episodes to DVD and in
re-watching them had wondered why the "Digger" character didn't get transferred
when Bendix took over. He had been a part of the earlier 1949 movie which also
starred Bendix.

When did Amanda Randolph play Oriole? Oriole was played by Ruby Dandridge
when I listened to the show, one of my favorites. Amanda Randoplh was one of
the actresses who played Beulah at that time.

Listening to AFRS' fourth anniversary program (5/29/46) show earlier
on Jerry Haendiges' site there was a throw away comment by Bob Hope who
said Bing Cosby couldn't make it because he was home watching over his
boys and didn't want to have happen to them what happened to Freddie
Bartholomew which got a big laugh. What was he did?
As to Milton DeLugg, he was the band leader on The Gong Show in the
mid-70s and introduced as "and Milton DeLugg and his band with a thud". :)

Will anyone be taping or otherwise recording the interview scheduled
with Fred Foy (as mentioned in a post a couple of days ago)? I'd like
to get a copy, and since it isn't being streamed -- and since I live
well out of the range of the station! -- I'm wondering if anyone will be
taping it.

After all, one can't be a Lone Ranger fan without also being a

Many thanks -- and feel free to reply to me offline.

MIlton a/k/a Happy Kyner was the bandleader and third banana on the
fictional Fernwood 2Night with Martin Mull and Fred Willard.

I don't know if it was "Fernwood Tonight", or its spinoff, "America Tonight",
but I do recall "Milton DeLugg & his Band with a Thug!"

Hi Everybody,

I just had Milton DeLugg over at Frank Bresee studio for an interview a
couple of month ago. Milton is doing fine and I wish I could get him for
the SPERDVAC convention but he spends the fall in NY getting any to produce
the Thanksgiving Mazy parade. This is a big show and take allot of time for
him to produce each year. Milton career goes back to 1938 with the big
bands and He was chosen by Al Jolson to be part of his movies Jolson sings
again plus the Kraft Music Hal. He was the band leader for Abe Burl radio
show. He work on Duffy Tavern, plus Fred Allen show too. He was Frank
Luster partner on many songs. Milton wrote such songs like Be My Life
Companion by the Mel Brother, Doris Day Chain high. He was the tonight show
band leader in the 1960s, plus Chuck Barris band leader too. Take care,

Frank DeVol released two wonderful stereo albums on Columbia back in the

Devol

radio shows. The albums included a booklet with pictures of various old-time

Hi -- I remember from old Radio Mirror magazine and a photo story there was a
very early live TV drama of "Mr. District Attorney" with the original radio
cast: "Jay Jostyn in the title role, Len Doyle as Harrington, and Vicki Vola
as Miss Miller".
This was certainly one of the earliest transformation of radio actors in their
original roles to television. Also some of the
radio soap operas like "The Guiding Light" and "Young Doctor Malone" came to
TV with the radio cast intact.
Slightly later, there were planned new programs with co-existing radio and
TV versions with the same casts, such as "Martin Kane, Private Eye" and "Wild
Bill Hickok" with Guy Madison and Andy Devine. -- Jim Harmon

Every day at 10:45 [removed] a delightful blues singer and pianist did a fifteen
minute show of songs and patter. It was Amanda Randolph.

***Actually, Amanda Randolph played the Kingfish's mother-in-law, "Mama," on
both radio and TV. It was her sister Lillian who played Madame Queen (and
Birdie on THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE). Also, Lillian briefly played Beulah on
radio before her sister assumed the role, but I'm not aware of either of the
Randolph sisters playing Oriole. Ruby Dandridge played Oriole on radio,
while Butterfly McQueen later played Beulah's friend on television.
