Subject: Jack Benny's ads

"[removed]" <[removed]@[removed]; wrote:

I've been watching a lot of old Jack Benny TV shows and have been really
struck by the commercials (which are very similar to the radio show
commerical, giving this post on-topic cover). Specifically, I'm astounded by
all the different slogans and jingles used by Lucky Strike, and how they'd
cram as many of them as possible into one commercial. Slogans/jingles
include:

- LS/MFT
- So round, so firm, so fully packed, so free and easy on the draw.
- It's toasted (to taste better).
- Luckies taste better - cleaner, fresher, smoother.

As you noted, many of those slogans went back years, and were heavily
used in the ads that appeared on Benny's radio show. They were so
ubiquitous that they also turned up in the scripts -- a fact I was unaware
of for many years because I grew up hearing just the shows and not the
ads that preceded and were interspersed with them.

For instance, Benny's announcer Don Wilson often read those ads
himself, so listeners would have been used to hearing him deliver
those lines. There's an episode where Jack and Mary go to the race
track, and they overhear Don ordering a hamburger; he uses the
same phrases, "round, firm, and fully packed" while ordering, and
that sequence of jokes meant nothing to me until years later when I
started hearing the old Lucky Strike advertisements.

I'm sure I've missed a couple. Modern advertising seems to take only a
single theme/slogan/jingle in each spot,

That's for sure! Apparently, listeners and viewers have been deemed
unable to handle more than one concept or line at a time. And
the lines' performance life is much shorter over time, too. The other
day I was wondering what happened to "Where's the Beef?" and
"The Un-Cola". . . .

Subject: Why do you listen to OTR?

My spouse has been, for quite a while, both amused and confused as to how
much enjoyment I receive from listening to OTR. I have struggled to explain
why I get so much out of the hobby. In essence, I offer her two primary
reasons:

1. Genuine enjoyment of the shows: Be it comedy, detective or drama show
many of the series were well written and acted. The acting was in a medium
that many of todays "actors" would find daunting. At times, the story lines
or events admittedly do have a dated and unrealistic quality. But, not
nearly as much as one would think. Many of the shows actually hold up quite
well under the weight of time (especially the comedies).

2. Nostalgia: OTR is for me a trip back in time. It offers people a chance
to experience a world that is no longer. That is one reason I prefer to
listen to the shows with the commercials, network announcements, etc. all
intact. I suppose it also dovetails with my interest in history in general.

How do others feel? What are the reasons we need to articulate to keep the
art of OTR alive, to share with others the enjoyment that is available in
abundant and relatively inexpensive quantities?

Subject: information search /Our Miss Brools

Hi All,

A friend of mine in Canada is looking through his collection of OBM anmd is
trying to pinpoint the broadcast date of the "American Tragedy" program.
He feels it had to be sometime in 1955 based on the presence of Lud Gluskin
who replaced Wilbur Hatch in Apr '54 and was replaced by Wilbur in July of
'55.

As there are several references to Cristal LAke in this program, and it says
they were to "open the cabin early" he is postulating on the date being one
of the last 2 weeks in May of '55. This is based on conversations with a
friend who taught high school in California, in the L A area during the'50s
and also on the distance to a "cristal Lake" near Azusa, in the San gabriel
Mountains.

He feels any earlier than the last 2 weeks would yet be too cold for the
5600 ft altitude, any later than May and there would be too much to do in
preparing the graduating class of '55 which should be the 3rd weekend that
year. Of course after graduation it would not be opening the cabin early.

Can anyone step in here with anything to help?

Thanks,
Patrick

Was this the same Ted Brown who, as "Bison Bill," hosted the Howdy
Doody show for several months while Buffalo Bob Smith was recovering
from a heart attack?

I've heard from Jeff Judson, who runs the Doodyville Historical Society, that this is the same
guy. Ted Brown was hired to host the Howdy Doody Show after Buffalo Bob's heart attack
over Labor Day weekend 1954.

Buffalo Bob returned to the show shortly after the first of the year, but he was on a remote
from his home in New Rochelle (They said he was at "Pioneer Village."), and Bison Bill
continued to host the show in the studio. When Buffalo Bob finally returned to Doodyville full-
time in September 1955, Bison Bill said it was time for him to be moving on and rode off into
the sunset.

Some people say that he returned to host the show during Buffalo Bob's vacations, but I
don't remember that.

However, I feel that it is impractical for two reasons. First, because many people would find having to replace pages an inconvenience (after years of updating tax-law documents before they went online, I sure do). And second, because even if it becomes the focus of all OTR scholarship, the expense will still be significant. What I would suggest instead would be that someone set up an OTR version of [removed] If you are not familiar with Wikipedia, this is an online encyclopedia authored by its users. Anyone can easily add, modify, or correct entries. Having the resource online would eliminate the cost and inconvenience of loose-leaf inserts, and would allow the resource to updated instantly. Mistakes could be corrected as soon as they were found. With strong community input and someone knowledgable overseeing the whole project, this could become the premier OTR reference site in short order. Of course, we as OTR collectors could simply make a commitment to start visiting Wikipedia and entering information there. That would be appropriate and the resource is already availalble. It would also increase the chances of non-collectors stumbling on information that might draw them into the hobby. In fact, there are already Wikipedia articles about many OTR subjects (the Lone Ranger entry even mentions that his first name wasn't John). On the other hand, I think many of us would enjoy a dedicated site.
