Oh the painful weight of time!
Now I figure it will more than five years before we can hear all the
wonderful shows that Bob has outlined.
Dear gods in radio heaven Uncle Bob, do we really have to wait that long?
I pray for some way to access certain shows that may be of interest to us
at any given point. I am not a tech person but I hope this is NOT and
impossible task.
Bob, you have no idea the hunger pangs you have unleashed to a great many
of us.
    What can we do?

Subject: Eddie Peabody

Ron Sayles births and deaths column for 11/07/04 show that Eddie
Peabody--the famous banjo artist passed away on 11/07/70.

I experienced a chance meeting with Eddie Peabody during the 1960s. My
family owned and operated E M Johnson Electronics in downtown Spokane, Wa
during those days.

This day I was alone in the 7000 sq. ft. premises and this little man came
in the front door carrying a large guitar amplifier. He did not mention his
name but said he had been referred to our business for the purpose of
repairing his amplifier and he was quite desparate to get it fixed soon. I
explained to him that we only repaired items under warranty that we had sold
and furthermore we didn't have any repair people on the premisies today.
Therefor I referred him to a nearby business that I was quite sure could
make the repairs for him.

I few mintues later a man came rushing in to our store and wanted to know if
Eddie Peabody was there with an amplifier that needed some emergency
repairs. I explained to that man that, yes a man had been here with a guitar
amplier and I had referred him to another store and he had left.

The point of this story is that if he had only told me who he was
I would have locked the front door and immediately repaired his amplifer for
him for free. I was familiar with Eddie Peabody and even owned some albums
he had made. He later that night was to play his banjo at a concert at the
nearby Eagles Lodge. My wife and
I attended his concert.

Subject: Re: listing of living OTR actors/actresses

Thanks to the folks who've embraced my idea for this project of compiling a
list of actors and actresses from our favorite programs that are still
living. I'm working on a listing combining information that I have, with
the lists that you folks have provided. After that, I'm going to present
it to a couple of reputable folks to review, and then when the information
is verified accurate, I'd like to post it online for all to use as a
reference work. Maybe someone who operates an OTR website would like to
use it?

I do wonder if folks would like to see guest stars of programs included on
this? My original vision was to only list cast members, but if people
would be interested in that information, it could be included. While I'd
like the list to be complete, I don't necessarily want this to duplicate
similar lists of classic film stars.

Howard Keel, musical star, dead at age 85.
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Coincidentally, he was featured in this
evening's "Dallas" reunion on CBS television. --cfs3]

Yeah. On New York City's WCBS-TV they had a news teaser an hour before the
delayed start of that reunion special which said only "Dallas TV star dies.
Details on the late news." That's it. No name. Leah and I had to do an
internet search to find out who it was. And even then it wasn't the lead
story on the newscast which didn't begin until 11:40. And it was just a
short three sentence story 10 minutes into the newscast. Meanwhile, over
on KCBS-TV Los Angeles, their news teasers specifically mentioned his name
as well as promoting many other features about "Dallas" scheduled for their
11 PM newscast. Keel was the lead story on the newscast and clips and an
interview excerpt were shown.

Phooey on WCBS. Bravo KCBS.

While not completely related to radio, there is a new film beginning
production that will be released sometime in 2005 based upon Edward R.
Murrow and his battle with Senator Joe McCarthy. Clooney will direct the
film and he was a co-writer of the script. He stars in the film as Fred
Friendly and David Straithairn stars as Murrow. The film is based around
Murrow/Friendly's television vehicle See It Now.

Subject: Myth of the Prime-Time GUNSMOKE Repeats

GUNSMOKE is one of the most honored series from the Golden Age of Radio.
However, many GUNSMOKE fans have not listened to or collected a substantial
number of episodes because of a myth that has existed for many years.

THE MYTH
What is that myth? Simply, that there were 64 Rerun or Repeat Prime-Time
episodes during the original run of GUNSMOKE (04/26/1952 - 06/18/1961.)
Several series broadcast logs and Old-Time Radio books list these GUNSMOKE
episodes as Re-Runs or Repeats. A Re-Run or Repeat is usually defined as
"the re-airing of a previously broadcast, transcribed episode of a program
without changes in the cast, crew, characters, dialog, and plot line."

THE TRUTH
After research conducted over a period of years, I determined that all
of the so-called GUNSMOKE Prime-Time Repeat episodes were actually new
productions of previously used GUNSMOKE scripts. I base the following
statement on having acquired and listened to all GUNSMOKE episodes in
circulation and having consulted nearly 350 GUNSMOKE radio scripts and other
series documentation.

REUSE OF SCRIPTS
As many Old-Time Radio fans know, scripts were sometimes reused on the
same series and on other series. Networks often had the option to reuse
scripts on the original series or on another series. A reduced fee was
usually paid to the writer for the multiple uses of a script.

If the script was used again on its original series, it was normally as
a new production and usually with at least a few cast or crew differences
from the original production. Dialog and scene changes might also be made.
This was the case with GUNSMOKE.

Over the prime-time run of GUNSMOKE, there were No Prime-Time Repeats or
Re-Runs! All of these so called Repeats or Re-Runs episodes were actually
new productions of previously used scripts.

WEEKLY POSTS:
I am posting this information about so called GUNSMOKE prime-time Repeat
episodes at the frequency of one Repeat a week to the GUNSMOKE Phorum which
I moderate. Thus far, information on two of the so called Repeats has been
posted. The title each these posts starts with Repeat Myth: in their
titles.

The information will include the differences between the original and
later productions of these so called "repeat" episodes such as cast and
crew, dialog, and plot line. I hope these posts will help GUNSMOKE fans to
correctly identify the shows in their collections that utilized reused
scripts.

You will find the GUNSMOKE Phorum along with many other Phorums on
favorite OTR series at:
