Subject: Re: Quiz shows
Kenneth Clarke asked
how long have there been quiz shows on OTR and what
were the most popular ones?
This calls for a reminder that my daughter Leah will be giving a presentation
on the history of radio quiz and game shows at FOTR next month and some of
these questions will be answered then. While it is not going to be
encyclopedic,
there are going to be a few surprises and some uncirculated audio.
Another reminder to everyone, that if you are unable to be at FOTR, we will
be broadcasting the informational presentations and panel sessions live on
[removed] .
Kenneth ended with "Contact me off list with this information." I've never
understood this kind of request with an on-topic question like this.
Why off-list??? This digest is supposed to be an exchange of information
and ideas. I am sure that every subscriber would be interested in any answers,
and even Leah would be helping out -- after her presentation, of course.

to his work that he slept in the studio for 18 days while bringing
updates to his appreciative audience.

NBC. The Chase and Sanborn Hour became one of the most popular radio
shows of the 1930s.
1937 The first broadcast of Kitty Keene, Inc. was heard on the NBC Red

John's other wife was not his wife at all. She was his secretary.
9/15
1934 NBC presented The Gibson Family to American audiences. The
program was the first musical comedy drama to be broadcast. Ernest
Whitman and Eddie Green were featured members of the cast and were
billed as "network radio's only colored comedians." The show originated
from the studios of WEAF in New York City.
9/18
1927 The Columbia Broadcasting System was born on this day in 1927.
CBS broadcast an opera, The King's Henchman, as its first program.
1948 The Original Amateur Hour returned to radio on ABC, two years
after the passing of the program's originator and host, Major Bowes.
Bowes brought new star talent into living rooms for 13 years.

Subject: Re: Roma Wine
Hello again --
As a youngster, I thought the fact that Roma Wine sponsored Suspense gave
the program a special sophistication. Little did I know, until I drank some
of it in college, that it was awful stuff, probably the cheapest blended
wine on the market. At the time of Suspense it was manufactured by Schenley,
a whiskey distributor, and its Tawny Port was nearly lethal -- you could buy
a gallon of it for about $4 in 1960, and I'm embarrassed to say that its
consumption during an end-of-school-year party laid my graduate school
roommate and our two girl friends out on the floor in a totally drunken
stupor, which was actually a merciful outcome of our imbibing until we woke
up and became terribly sick to our stomachs. In fact, Roma cured me of
drinking wine for several years until I acquired a little sophistication of
my own and discovered the excellence of the California Napa Valley among our
country's domestic wines.
You can read a description of the company and the wine varieties it was
still producing in 1955 by going to
[removed] . It reads like a
complimentary advertisement for the product, but believe me, Roma wine, in
all its infinite variety, was terrible stuff. I don't know when it
disappeared from the market, but I have a pretty good idea of why.
