I believe that Cohen asked Jack Benny permission to use Rodney Dangerfeild as
his stage name and Jack said go ahead. Jack never used the name after that. I
can't remember if I read it or heard it. But little mind is loaded with
trivia. I'm sure someone will jump all over me and say the old man is nuts,
but that is what I member.

Subject: Dangerfield name
When Rodney Dangerfield's father did a vaudeville act, Roy and Arthur,
he used the stage name Phil Roy. Dangerfield used the stage name Jack
Roy when he began in show business as a teenager. He dropped out and
sold aluminum siding for 12 years.
When he decided to try again at age 40, he wasn't sure of the reaction
and wanted to appear anonymously, so he told a club owner not to use
the name Jack Roy in the club's newspaper listings. The club owner
gave the newspaper a different name. When it was time to go on, the
club's emcee said, "Here's Rodney Dangerfield."
He asked the club owner where he got that name, and the owner said, "I
don't know. I made it up, just like that." Dangerfield's friends told
him the name was funny, and his wife told him to keep it, saying,
"With a name like Rodney Dangerfield, if you don't hit, you're an
idiot." She also suggested he write a routine about changing his name,
which is on one of his albums. Source: his autobiography, "It's Not
Easy Bein' Me" (HarperEntertainment, 2004).

Subject: Smoking - "Fake Cigarette"
Joe, you've dredged up a memory up from the far recesses of my childhood
subconscious - how to make a fake cigarette, complete with "smoke."
You roll an ersatz cigarette out of white paper, load it with flour, and
put a pinhole opening at either end. The slightest puff of breath will create
a plume of "smoke."
Sincerely,
George Wagner

For years, Rodney Dangerfield had worked as a standup comedian, "Jack
Roy."
He left the business, looking for something steadier to support his
family, and became an aluminum siding salesman.
(There was a crossover year, where Jack would be sitting in someone's
kitchen, finalizing the contract on a house-job, and the homeowner would
suddenly realize, "Weren't you the guy on MERV GRIFFIN last night?")
A famous story:
Dangerfield did THE TONIGHT SHOW one evening, when Jack Benny was
already on the panel. During a break, Benny was ecstatic, telling
Dangerfield that he had created the perfect comic personna.
Benny commented that he played a tightwadded character, that people
found funny, but that EVERYBODY has a situation where they're not
[removed]
For years, Dangerfield kept his old standup name in the phone book, in
case an old friend ever needed to get in touch.

From Those Were The Days

1937 NBC presented the first broadcast of The Guiding Light.
1944 Beulah, a black maid played by a white man, Marlin Hurt, aired
for the first time on Fibber McGee and Molly. The spinoff, Beulah,
became a radio series in 1945.
1/26
1947 The Greatest Story Ever Told was first heard on ABC.
1/27
1931 NBC introduced listeners to Clara, Lu 'n' Em on its Blue network.
The show became the first daytime radio serial when it was moved from
its original nighttime slot.
1948 Wire Recording Corporation of America announced the first
magnetic tape recorder. The 'Wireway' machine with a built in oscillator
sold for $[removed] ($[removed] in 2006 money).
1956 The CBS Radio Workshop was heard for the first time. This first
broadcast featured Aldous Huxley narrating his classic, Brave New World.
1/28
It was on this night in 1940 that Beat the Band made its debut on NBC,
with the Ted Weems band. Beat the Band was where listeners' questions
were selected in the hopes of stumping the band. If a listener's
question was chosen, he or she received $10($[removed] in 2006 dollars) The
questions were posed as riddles: What song title tells you what
Cinderella might have said if she awoke one morning and found that her
foot had grown too large for her glass slipper? If the band played the
correct musical answer, Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?, the
listener lost.
When Raleigh cigarettes sponsored Beat the Band, the listener who beat
the band won $50 ($[removed] in 2006) and two cartons of cigarettes ...
Raleighs, of course. When the sponsor changed to General Mill's Kix
cereal, if the listener beat the band, he/she won twenty bucks ($[removed]
in 2006) and a case of Kix cereal.
1934 As a result of a compliment paid on this day, by Walter Winchell,
in his newspaper column; a local disc jockey began receiving several
offers from talent scouts and producers. The DJ became known as the
Redhead, adored by thousands in Washington, DC and, later, by millions
across the country on CBS radio and TV. His trademark (strumming a
ukulele and delivering down home patter) endeared him to fans for many
years. We remember the broadcasting legend, Arthur Godfrey. "I wanna go
back to my little grass [removed]"
1/30
1933 The Lone Ranger was heard for the first time.
1/31
1936 The Green Hornet was introduced by its famous theme song, The
Flight of the Bumble Bee. The radio show was first heard on WXYZ in
Detroit, MI on this day. The show stayed on the air for 16 years. The
Green Hornet originated from the same radio station where The Lone
Ranger was performed. You may remember that the title character in The
Green Hornet was really named Britt Reid. He was, in fact, supposed to
be the great nephew of John Reid, the Lone Ranger. Both popular series
were created by George Trendle and Fran Striker.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Six months ago I looked into purchasing airline tickets to fly out to a few
University archives for research and discovered to my horror that the prices
had gone astro. The entire one year's schedule appeared to be more expensive
the later the dates. Every month the tickets were $25 or $30 more than the
previous month and continued that way till August 2009. It was as if the
airlines anticipated the cost of fuel to continue going up and was accounting
for the difference.
Thankfully, I hesitated. Earlier this week I realized I had to book my tickets
and returned to the same web-site and discovered a surprise. The ticket prices
are REALLY, REALLY low. What would have cost me $500 plus was $199 and the
trip to the mid-West for $790 was now $430. Assuming the price of gas will go
up and being the optimist that I am, I figured to pass this on to anyone
considering flying to an old-time radio convention. Book it now. Not
"tomorrow." While the airlines cannot predict the cost of the tickets six
months from now, and people can offer their own non-valued opinions on what
causes the prices to go up and down, I can certainly verify they are MUCH
lower than they were six months ago and well worth buying them now. Planning
to fly to REPS. SPERDVAC, FOTR, MANC or Cincy this year? Do it now!
