Subject: Kenosha

So glad to hear that award-winning OTR researcher, Jack French, has yet
another important venue to inform his audience about radio's glory days--
Kenosha, Wisconsin.

He speaks of OTR performers who came from Kenosha. Indeed, it is a famous
place. BEAR FACTS, the one and only newsletter about "The Cinnamon Bear,"
originated in Kenosha in 1987. Nearly 500 people subscribed before it sadly
disappeared in 1991. Newspaperman Don Jensen was the guiding genius.

There may be even more Kenosha natives who became big in radio, but
we'll leave that up to Ron Sayles.

Jack French threw down the gauntlet, but I can only come up with two
more.

Milt Herth and Dora Johnson, sister of Raymond Edward.

Subject: A little bit about Bob Hope

Hello there!
There's been much said lately about Bob Hope. That reminded me that
Bob Hope has kept a personal museum of his work for years. He has
most everything he has ever done, including his entire radio career.
Many of the radio shows are on 16" ETs. One of the people (can't
remember the name of who) came down to the PPB radio archives and
wanted help in transferring the ETs, especially since we are equipped
to do it properly, and they are not into that.
We were happy to help out. But they requested all the radio shows be
transferred to DAT tape. Of course, knowing the flaws of recording to
DAT, we explained what some of the problems would be in the future.
We not only covered temperature control and storage, but we explained
that if one ZERO or one ONE is dropped by accident due to poor
recording or stretched or shrinking tape, then there will be either
large gaps of lost show or, from the point of the dropped 01s the
rest of the tape would be useless.
THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE US!
Even though we could prove the problem.
So, we ended up dubbing only a short number of Hope's shows before
they decided to take the rest of the ETs to someone who would gladly
dub the shows to DAT tape.
(Probably made some good money off that). We offered to dub the shows
for a single copy of each show for our archives. We offered to dub to
open reel tape, full or half track, or (preferably) to CDs.

I have to sigh in sadness at what I consider the stupidity of some
people. A little research about DAT on their behalf would have helped.

Oh well, I hope the Bob Hope DAT tapes are stored properly and that
they have kept the original ETs.

Subject: Bob Hope at Fort Belvoir
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I was right and wrong. The historian at Fort Belvoir informed me that Bob
Hope performed there on May 5th, 1953. I failed to take into account that by
1953, radio shows were taping their performances, so the broadcast could have
been on any date after May 5th. So, knowing the date of the perfomance does
not mean that the logs are wrong.
