Many people in the OTR community have expressed concern over the future of
the hobby. I have recently had a wonderful experience which may be of some
help in this matter.
Last May 16th, my wife and I were visiting Seattle and saw a live taping of
an Imagination Theater episode. What an absolutely joyful evening! The IT
folks did an original Sherlock Holmes play, which was compelling and
suspenseful. When the actors made a mistake, they stopped, went back and did
it
over again. These Let's try it again moments were often hilarious as Larry
Albert and company came up with some wonderful jokes while waiting for their
second chance.
I was encouraged by the large number of young families who were watching
this production at the Kirkland Performance Center. During the intermission,
children were allowed to go on stage and talk to the actors and sound
technicians.
Perhaps OTR is a bit like baseball. When children are introduced to
baseball their first interest is in the current teams and players but that
interest often expands to include the sport's history.
I know, not much radio drama being produced today. But maybe we should be
encouraging kids to tune in Imagination Theater and Twilight Zone before we
bring out The Shadow CD's.
And, if you plan to visit Seattle be sure to check with the Imagination
Theater website, [removed], and attend a taping. If possible, take a few
young guests along with you.
All the usual disclaimers apply here. I hope my musings have been of some
help.

Has anyone logged the AFRS disc? After years of transferring these
discs, I just realized that I have no idea of what the "R" number is?
I was loaned about 100 discs of CBS Mystery Theater and Suspense
along with a number of other mixed programs.
There were no titles on any of the discs. I recognized some of the
Suspense programs, but I'm guessing that as long as I have the R
number and the program number, somewhere there must be a log that
would give me the actual show title. Am I correct?
For example I have 20 Jim Pewter shows. They all have an R number
like R 14-0 10A 1856F
I know the F stands for Friday. The 10A is side one of the disc or
side A. But what does the 10 stand for? The 14-0 number starts at
around 8 or 9 and goes up to 15. In all cases the number after the
dash (-) is 0.

Subject: Patriotic PSA's
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I've heard these here and there before but since I started listening to a
motherlode of 15 minute "Fibber McGee and Molly" shows from 1954-55, it's
really jumped out at me. In many of the unsold commercial breaks, the PSA's
often consist of patriotic pep talks--how we (America) have the greatest
standard of living in the world, how capitalism rocks, etc., really
heavy-handed sales jobs, usually with none of the attribution we'd hear now
(in
other words, no "this has been a message from the Ad Council," etc). I also
noticed these in the few "Ethel and Albert" episodes I've been able to find
(from the 15 minute ABC run) and occasionally, in the closing moments of
"Our Miss Brooks." Bing Crosby even gives some of these talks himself in the
General Electric run of his radio show (which might be a whole other story).
These all date to the late 1940s and early 1950s, we didn't even get these
during World War II!
So my question [removed]'s the story behind these? Who put them out, the
networks, the Ad Council, some agency that didn't sign their name, who?
And why was it necessary to air PSAs reminding us to love our country the
same way we're reminded not to start forest fires and not to litter? I'm not
looking for the most obvious [removed]"Those were the times we lived in,
Cold War, Red Scare, [removed]" I'm looking for whether this was part of a
specific plan, and what in the world was the plan?
