Subject: studio clocks

Charlie,

If someone hasn't replied already about your question, you
can find the Self Winding Clock Co.'s studio clocks, made
for Western Union's time service, on eBay and other sites. I
have a collection of three or four of them ... the ones with
the sweep second hands that moved in half-second increments
and corrected themselves each hour.

Years ago in Dallas, I took a course or two in restoring
them. By now I've forgotten most all of what I learned.
However, during that period, when I had one apart, I put the
clock dial up on the wall of our house and took a picture of
it. This was back when there weren't all that many
megapixels in a camera, so the result wasn't all that sharp
... but the dial looks clear enough at a little distance.
Anyway, I Photoshopped it a bit, putting screw heads where
they should be and put a red dot where the bulb that lights
up on the hour would go. Then I asked a commercial printer
friend, because he had a big enough laser printer, to make
some 9-inch diameter copies. I had ordered several atomic
clock kits from

and substituted my dials for the ones that came with the
kit. I have three of these around the house ... keeping
super accurate time as the old Western Union clocks did --
and I don't have to fool with adjusting them for daylight
and standard time.
