1940 As a summer replacement for blind, piano virtuoso Alec Templeton,
The Quiz Kids was first heard. The show continued on NBC until 1953.
1943 The Dreft Star Playhouse debuted on NBC. Jane Wyman starred in
the first broadcast, titled Bachelor Mother.
1944 The Alan Young Show debuted on NBC. It was a summer replacement
for the popular Eddie Cantor. The show became a regular in the fall NBC
lineup.
6/29
1932 Vic and Sade debuted on the NBC Blue network this day.
1947 Radio's show with a heart made its debut. Strike It Rich became a
favorite on CBS. Todd Russell was the original host. Warren Hull took
over a few years later.
1951 Bill Stern did his last 15 minute program of sports features for
NBC. Stern had been with NBC for 14 years. He later moved to the Mutual
Broadcasting System to finish out an illustrious sportscasting career.

1921 Documents were signed forming the Radio Corporation of America,
better known as RCA. RCA soon rivaled its main competitor, General
Electric (GE).

1934 The Federal Communications Commission, as mandated in the
Communications Act of 1934, replaced the Federal Radio Commission as the
regulator of broadcasting in the United States.
7/2
1939 The Aldrich Family debuted on NBC.
1946 CBS signed Arthur Godfrey to do a weekly nighttime show.
1951 NBC presented Bob and Ray (Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding) on a
network show.

1939 Chic Young's comic strip character, Blondie was first heard on CBS.
1940 The legendary comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello debuted
with their network show on NBC.
1945 NBC gave the comedian/pianist Victor Borge his own the summer
replacement show for Fibber McGee and Molly. He had been heard a few
years earlier as a semi regular on NBC's "Kraft Music Hall" with Bing
Crosby.

Subject: Fibber's name
There has been some inquiry about McGee's first name, it is
Fibber. In a program from March 25 1941 titled Fibber changes his
name, he explains to Molly that he was supposed to be named after his
uncle Filmer (or something like that) but the minister had a head
cold and said Fibber instead. So his real first name is Fibber,
other than that program I can't recall Molly ever calling him Fibber.

Subject: The Shadow's Clyde Burke
Thanks to John Olsen and Martin Grams for the lowdown on Shadow's newsie
friend Clyde Burke. (John replied directly, Martin to the list.)
Special thanks to John for mentioning the Shadow scripts at Syracuse, and
pointing out that script supervisor Edith Meisner insisted on keeping ties to
the pulp magazine series, within the constraints of the radio series "bible"
(which installed the more radiogenic and lovely Margot Lane in place of the
complexities of Clyde and the print Shadow's other agents).
My original info on Clyde came mostly from John's terrific bio pages on the
Shadow's agents, although I somehow typed the name as "Clive" in my note to
the list (duh)...

There he is, press card and [removed] When I got John's note, I pulled all three
1938 episodes out of my archives -- hadn't listened to them in a long time,
and wasn't listening for reporters when I heard them the first time. Great
stuff! As a former newspaperman myself, I think Clyde (or the Shadow script
writer) did an excellent job in dictating his lead to the rewrite desk in
that "Night Without End" story:
"After 72 hours of panic and terror, looting and disastrous fires and
accidents, a definite clue has been unearthed by the police, a clue
explaining the black fog enveloping the city. At noon yesterday, an extortion
note was [removed]"
Definitely "stop the presses!" stuff -- at least for a sensational tabloid
like the Classic. I may show it to journalism students as an example of
getting detail and drama into a sentence, even though it's in the passive
voice. (I picture the Classic as something like the old New York Evening
Graphic, one of my favorite papers: [removed] )
Incidentally, I suspect Martin got the spelling "Piochi" the same place that
I got "Clive" -- those strange keyboard lice that eat [removed] :-)
The famous aria from the opera "Pagliacci" that plays a role in "The Tenor
With the Broken Voice" is "Vesti la Giubba," which radio fans may have in
their archives as performed by Caruso -- or by Spike Jones!
For your weekend entertainment, check out Caruso's version here:

Or, if you want to roll around laughing, here's what Spike Jones did to it:

Subject: 21st Precinct
Hello Everyone;
My wife and I just returned from a two month driving trip all through the US
and
Canada. We brought along several MP3s to listen to during the long stretches
of
driving. It was very entertaining to listen to OTR while driving along.
Neither of
us had ever heard the series-21 Precinct, so we brought an MP3 of that series.
What a surprise, they were great, very good entertaining stories. It
reminded me
of a cross between Dragnet, Barney Miller (tv), and Ed McBain stories. Just a
recommendation for any of you who have not listened to these programs.
