Re: Tom Barnett's [removed] "essential" is in the eye and ear of the
beholder. To me, Dunning's Encyclopedia of OTR is the only one for which I'd
use that term. Here are others that are great, and have been helpful to me as
an OTR host:

Raised On Radio - Gerald Nachman
Radio Comedy - Arthur Frank Wertheim
The Golden Web - Erik Barnouw
The Murrow Boys - Cloud & Olson
Air Time: The Inside Story of CBS News - [removed] Gates

In response to Tom Barnett's request for our favorite/essential OTR books,
mine include the following:

On The Air - The Encyclopedia Of Old Time Radio (John Dunning)
Don't Touch That Dial (J. Fred MacDonald)
The Great American Broadcast (Leonard Maltin)
Raised On Radio (Gerald Nachman)
The Great Radio Heroes (Jim Harmon)
Radio Comedy (Arthur Frank Wertheim)
The Great Radio Comedians (Jim Harmon)
The Great Radio Sitcoms (Jim Cox)
The Laugh Crafters (Jordan Young)
Sunday Nights At Seven (Jack & Joan Benny)
Heavenly Days: The Story of Fibber McGee and Molly (Charles Stumpf & Tom Price)
The Great Gildersleeve (Charles Stumpf & Ben Ohmart)
The Top 100 Classic Radio Shows (Carl Amari & Martin Grams Jr.)

If I had one of the at least 3 other Jack Benny books written by contributors
of his show I'm sure they would be on my list as well.

Subject: Essential Books

Folks;

I usually don't post opinion (I'm always afraid anything I add will be
misconstrued as "official" Digest positions, when they certainly are not!),
but this was, for me, a simple question to answer. I have two that I consider
essential, and a whole lot more in the library that I consider supplimentary
(like Radio Rides the Range, where Kate and I contributed a pair of articles):

On the Air; The Enclyclopedia of Old-Time Radio, John Dunning

Ultimate History of Network Radio Programming and Guide To ALL Circulating
Shows, Jay Hickerson

These are the only two books I refer to in conversation by the authors'
last names; The Dunning and The Hickerson.

         Charlie
