Subject: Dunning's "On The Air" OTR Encyclopedia
I have long contended that no true OTR fan would (or could) be
without John Dunning's "On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time
Radio." However, based on some of the questions posed on this Digest,
it's evident that many folks who consider themselves true OTR fans
have never gotten around to acquiring John's book.
It was first released by Oxford University Press ten years ago, a
massive 840 page volume. (John had originally wanted a two volume
set, but the publisher balked and he had to cut out a lot of material
to get it below 900 pages.) Oxford is always pricey (their Grove
Encyclopedia of Decorative Arts runs $ 250) so it wasn't a surprise
when they initially charged $ 75 for Dunning's book. That scared a
lot of OTR fans out of buying it, but I gladly took the [removed]
did several other folks I know.
A few years ago, Oxford put the book on sale for $ 50 so I bought a
second copy; my first one was showing wear from the constant research
trips I made into its pages. Later during a year-end sale, Oxford
dropped the price again; this time to $ 35.
Today the Oxford University Press "Spring Sale" catalog arrived in my
mail box and "On the Air" can now be purchased for only $ [removed]! I
urge all Digesters to waste no time in sending off your dime and
boxtop, er, I mean your check, for John's book. Oxford will take your
order toll-free at 800-451-7556 or go to their web site <[removed]
us/springsale>
DISCLAIMER: I own no Oxford stock, but John did consult with me,
during the research for this book, on Bobby Benson, Candy Matson, and
some of the RCMP radio shows.
