This reporter from Variety confuses shows in which the stars play characters
with their stage names with reality television, mentioning Ozzie & Harriet,
Jack Benny and Burns and Allen in the process.

This salute to a Monterey County DJ who has been on the air 63 years mentions
that he was hired by Bing Crosby and grew up listening to I Love a Mystery.

For the whole story on Don Ameche, see my book at:

By the way, I'm now deeply into writing The Bickersons' Love Letters, which
is coming along fine. It finally gives some history to the bickering couple,
for the first time Ever. Never before did we know how/when/why they met,
their backgrounds, or what caused them to start bickering in the first place
(besides getting married, of course). It'll be ready in November. :)

Old radio. Old movies. New books.

Subject: Re: Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Randy Story is looking for a radio version of "The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer." I have in my collection a two part version of Tom Sawyer,
which I confess I haven't listened to (back in the days when I was in a
collector's group and was getting reels monthly) so I don't know the
quality. Plus the information might be in error. It is listed as a radio
program called "American Novels" from 1947.

Randy, I cannot say what the quality is until I can pull it out to see.
Contact me off list.

Subject: Parley Baer and Gunsmoke

I remember Ken Greenwald's attempt to get Bill Conrad to star
in
the Gunsmoke show recreation.
I also remember that one evening before Bill granted permission for
Keith to play the part, Ken called John and me and asked us if we
would talk to Bill Conrad about the project. We had spoken to him
earlier and Ken thought that maybe it might help if we were to ask.
Well, Conrad turned us down as well. He just didn't want to look
back. He didn't want to get involved, although he did wish everyone
involved in the project, good luck.
Well, at least I batted a thousand in my conversations with Bill Conrad.
He also turned me down regarding an interview for both SPERDVAC, and
for our radio show.

Subject: Chester as jailer?

Didn't Chester tend to go out on pursuits/investigations with Matt Dillon,
though? I seem to remember Dillon saying "Come on, Chester" more than you'd
expect if Chester was merely the jailer.

That being said, I don't remember Chester ever being identified as a deputy
explicitly, nor do I remember Chester ever talking about owning or carrying a
badge.

I hadn't seen anything about this in the Digest so I thought I'd
mention it. Composer Alexander Courage has died. He was most famous for
composing the theme for "Star Trek," but his NY Times obit mentioned
that he "worked for CBS Radio, composing and conducting for shows like
Hedda Hopper's This Is Hollywood and The Adventures of Sam Spade,
Detective."

Subject: re Erwin of the Arctic

Having tried a different spelling of his last name, I've discovered that Dave
Irwin really existed and actually made the dogsled trek some 3,600 miles from
Nome to Churchill along the rim of the Arctic Sea. There's a book about the
adventure which took three years, as told by Dave Irwin to Jack O'Brien. It's
called ALONE ACROSS THE TOP OF THE WORLD. Foreward by Russell Owen. Chicago:
John C. Winston Co., 1935. So the radio program was probably a result of the
book, sometime around 1935 or 1936.

Thanks to Dee for sending me another episode. Chances are it was never picked
up as a serial and only these two audition shows exist. Can't wait to read
the book!

Here's an interview with Simon Jones, star of BBC Radio series Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy and two-time Friends of Old Time Radio Convention guest
on pop culture website [removed]

[removed]

Simon's on the guest list again for this year and even though it would be
small minded to root against him getting paid work between now and October,
I guess it's fair to root for him having October 23-26 off.
