I had another great time at SPERDVAC this year. The highlight was probably
meeting Janet Waldo for the first time but also seeing Dick Beals, June
Foray, Herb Ellis and so many more again was terrific as well.

I also took a whole lot of photos of the entire event, including both the
presentations and the socializing, so definitely check this link out to see
who was there and what they were up to.

I'm a little busy tonight to give a full recap but wanted to make sure the
photos got out promptly.

Great thanks to Bobb Lynes, Barbara Watkins and all of the others who made
the event possible.

  Stay well,

  Sean Dougherty

Subject: Hindenburg Disaster

The calendar entry regarding the anniversary of Herb Morrison's
broadcast of the Hindenburg landing reminds of a question I've been
wanting to pose about the broadcast: how much of it was scripted?

Not the crash - of course not that. But his talk up until that point
-- was Morrison a fabulous ad-libber, or did he have a script either
in whole or in part?

His opening narration is quite eloquent in its [removed] "as we came
in for a landing on the runway here at Lakehurst, we could easily see
that a great event was about to take place", his remarks on how "the
great ship looks mighty proud of the place she's playing in aviation
today" and the descriptions of the interior, captain and crew - what
about these?

I never gave this a thought until recently when I acquired a copy of
scripts for the national network broadcasts of the opening ceremonies
of the Texas Centennial Exposition in Dallas in June 1936. These were
live broadcasts with announcers stationed at locations around the
Fairgrounds, and while they were designed to sound ad-libbed, they
were in fact, fully scripted. Here's part of Page One, probably to be
read by Ted Husing: "Here, under a golden sun high in blue arch which
spans this mighty empire, we are to bring you a picture of a magic
Exposition [removed] now I see that the group of dignitaries gathered
here at the majestic entrance to the Exposition is ready to begin the
the opening ceremonies which will officially invite the entire world
to this Centennial birthday party in Dallas."

It goes on on this vein for pages, describing events taking place,
complete with scripted "adlibs." The tone seems remarkably similar to
much of Herb Morrison's broadcast. Obviously, parts of the May '37
ARE completely adlibbed, as he goes outside and as the rain delays the
landing, but how much source material was he working from, and
whatever became of it?

Today on the photo blog "If Charlie Parker Was a [removed]"

inadvertent) trio of OTR images.

Rochester, reading a script in the bathtub:

Jackson Beck, looking far younger than I can ever imagine him:

And concluding with a Fatima ad featuring Jack Webb:

(I might as well mention yesterday's rather interesting photo of Fred Allen
in a crown and ermine cape--anybody know the date of this picture? It looks
rather late in his life:
