I can't be absolutely certain it was on radio ("old time" or otherwise),
but I *think* it was, and if so, it is surely THE absolutely definitive
example of spelling in advertising:
"N-E-S-T-L-E-S,
Nestle's Makes The Very [removed]
Choooooocolaaaaate!"
(This was immediately followed by a jaw-closing "Clop!", when sung by
Farfel.)

Subject: Re: FOTR Presentation
Once again, I'm doing a quiz show at the FOTR Convention. This will
take place first thing on Friday morning at 8:45. Last year it was
like pulling teeth to get contestants. Honestly, the questions are
not that hard. So, I've upped the anti. We gave away about $50 in
prizes last year and this year I'm going to make the prizes even bigger.
Based on how much time it took last year, I will probably only have
time for 5 contestants. So, if you are interested, please get with me
before Friday morning. I'll be arriving Wednesday afternoon and of
course you can find me most of Thursday either behind the camera in
the presentation room or in Room 5, which is our dealer's room.
And before I forget, I owe a number of those who were contestants
last year an apology. I finally got a chance to look at the video and
realized that I was so engrossed in keeping track of time and
counting the points, that I never noticed that several of you put out
our hand for me to shake it after you had appeared. I never looked up
from my notes and never noticed. I felt really bad when I saw this on
the DVD. I promise that this year, I'll try and take more notice of
what is going on around me.

I recall its usage, but not the program it appeared on. In one of the
quiz shows Camels sponsored, the contestant had to answer a series of
five questions in sequence. For each correct answer, the contestant got
an L, an E, an M, etc. When the fifth answer was delivered correctly, a
quartette on the show sang "You're a Lemac [removed]'re a Lemac now"
and the prize was awarded. (The singers pronounced it LEE-mack.)

Well, Ted, you haven't been reading my book "The Great Radio Audience
Participation Shows" ([removed]) [removed]
In chapter 14, "Take It or Leave It," I explain, in connection with several
series that quizmaster Bob Hawk emceed:
"Thanks to the Yanks" debuted on October 31, 1942. By July 9, 1943, it was
renamed "The Bob Hawk Show" and -- with only minimal interruption -- lasted
for another decade, through July 27, 1953. (Camel cigarettes sponsored all
of these shows. As if to signify joining some elite caste, a winner on them
was tagged a 'Lemac' -- 'Camel' spelled backwards -- while studio audiences
sang "You're a Lemac now.")
Mystery solved.
Tell me, how many of us would have given a cat's whisker to have been a
Lemac?

I have a question for script collectors, and it is probably [removed]
The subject is EPISODE TITLES. I have found that situation comedies , like
"Our Miss Brooks", "Adv of Ozzie & Harriet","Life With Luigi"`and
[removed] no official title. If I look in published logs I may find
several titles for the same episode. Sometime a log has a name and that
doesn't really fit the story.
In my date base broadcasts are listed by the date and the episode title.
Sometime I make up a title and of course my title fits what I heard, because
nobody has listed a one that is "Official". The worst titles are used on
"Dragnet" and anomg the best are The Shadow , San Spade, or X-Minus one.
The comedy shows are also hard to find titles, shows like Benny, Hope,
Cantor, Allen Etc.
The question to script collectors is, did the author or someone write on the
script "The Great Gildersleeve"title "Waterworks Break Down" Or another
title "Low Water Pressure" or would it just be labeled episode #97
10/24/43 ? I assume that the 16" disk would have the same labels.

Ted Kneebone recalls that "Camel" spelled backwards is "Lemac". That
was a musical jingle with a vocal group affirming that "I'm a Lemac now,
I'm a Lemac [removed]" (or "You're a Lemac [removed]") an ad campaign for the
cigarette brand that they have become Camel smokers called "Lemacs."
Bob Hawk's radio quiz show perhaps introduced the ad campaign.
I remember it was about the same time as Lucky Strike's LS/MFT campaign
with The Sportsmen Quartet singing their jingle. There was also a
"clacker sound" version tapping out a Morse code-like effect with an
announcer repeating the letters, ending with "Lucky Strike Means Fine
Tobacco - so round, so pure, so easy on the draw." - then, "Be Happy. Go
Lucky!"
