Subject: Eternal Light Query
Does anyone know, please, who was the voice on the filter microphone
for the opening of this NBC program over its many years as a Sunday
morning feature? ("...causing the lamp to burn [removed]") Could
it have been Bernard Lenrow? Alexander Scourby? Or perhaps different
people at different times?
Many thanks.

Subject: Rumpole Of The Bailey - off topic
I know Charlie wants only old stuff discussed here, but I would like to call
readers attention to the fact BBC Radio 4 is airing 2 new episodes of Rumpole
Of The Bailey, following a series of reruns of the old series.
One BBC listener commented (concerning the current heat wave in England), "A
hot afternoon, a cold drink and Rumpole on the radio - yes a perfect
combination."
The new stories are:
Rumpole and the Teenage Werewolf aired on Wednesday 19 July 2006, but can be
listened to up to 7 days later on the Internet.
Followed on Wednesday 26 July 2006, Rumpole and the Right to Privacy.
I for one appreciate the BBC continues to produce radio drama.
Wouldn't it be something if CBS produced a new series of Yours Truly
Johnny Dollar?
Don't hold your breath.

May I tell an incident related to me by my wife Rhoda Williams who did many
Dragnets ( I was married to the girl 54 years).
One day Virginia Gregg took Rhoda onto the set of DRAGNET and said to Jack
Webb, "This is my old friend Rhoda Williams I've known from years of radio
acting and she is good! Jack you've just got to use her!" Jack smiled
and said "If Ginny says you're okay, I'll call you!"
Weeks later, Jack Webb's assistant called Rhoda in and had her read off a
teleprompter. The assistant explained that whatever Rhoda did, she was not
to memorize the script, but she must read it off the teleprompter in as flat
and natural a voice as possible.
She did this for several Dragnet shows and Jack also loved her "harlequin"
glasses so she photographed "normal".
One day she was called to be on Dragnet and Rhoda was to work with an actor
who turned out had memorized his script and was trying to give Jack an
"acting" delivery of his lines. Jack Webb stopped the whole set and told
the actor "If you can give me that scene word for word perfect, you do not
have to use the teleprompter." They started the scene over again and Rhoda
read off the teleprompter while the nervous actor delivered his lines
almost perfect but with several words out of order. Jack stopped the
filming and said "Read it off the teleprompter! We're losing time! " The
scene started over again with Rhoda and the now chastened actor reading his
lines accurately and losing the "acting" delivery. Jack said "Cut and
Print" and moved on to the next set.
Rhoda explained Jack liked radio actors because radio actors knew how to do
"cold readings". Radio actors were good "sight readers" who delivered the
lines without "acting". Radio actors could deliver a finished speech
without many rehearsals. Many of Jack Webbs' scripts had been radio shows
first, then turned into films.
Rhoda taught all her acting and dialect classes at California State
University at Northridge how to read a script Jack Webb style
For one show Jack asked Rhoda to read the script as fast as she could and
gave her a long speech which she read very fast and accurately. Harry
Morgan promptly called her "RHODA MOTORMOUTH"!

From Those Were The Days --
7/23
1933 - The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly,
Helen stayed at 35 years of age throughout the entire series. The show
used two Helen Trents over the years. The first Helen was played by
Virginia Clark (for 11 years) and the second by Julie Stevens (for 16
years).
1933 - During his fourth Fireside Chat, [removed] President Franklin D.
Roosevelt showed why the homey, warm, comfortable discussion was,
indeed, a fireside chat. The President stopped the discussion on the air
and asked for a glass of water, which he then sipped. Newsman Robert
Trout is credited with coming up with the name, Fireside Chat, because
of real moments like this.
1943 - Foreign Assignment, was first heard on Mutual. The title role of
Brian Berry was played by Jay Jostyn, who also starred in another
popular radio drama, Mr. District Attorney.
