X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative

I've just finished Jim Cox's informative Radio Detectives book. He wrote
that there are over 320 extant episodes of Perry Mason. According to my
calculations there are approximately 252 that are readily available
which I have:

Episodes #2686 -2867 the Kate Beekman storyline 1953 -1954
#1337-1348 which contain no opening/closings but commercials and
storyline 10/26 -11/10/48
The Mae Grant/Dorrie/Kitty storyline #2085-2254 with many gaps
#1925 and 1926 The Deadly Double storyline
The Wilfred Palmer murder 3 episodes #1925, 1926 and one other
Puzzled Suitor 6/7/44
2 from the Bill Barker storyline of 1949
The Den of Marijuana from 1950
One episode from 1955
One other from 1950 known as the Stopped Clocks
and one other that possibly from 1948 with pre-tide sponsorship

That leaves a minimum of 48 more episodes. Was this a typo in the book
or do these really exist and are available? If so, where are they? Are
they only in private hands or the Library or Congress? I'm a major fan
and will be happy to contact anyone who can provide me any information.

Sincerely,

Michael Simons

A question from a long time lurker - - -

The program The Aldrich Family was both long running and had well known
companies for sponsorship. Yet there seems to be relatively few
episodes in circulation and very little "logging" of episodes. Why is
this?

Subject: Jack Benny misquote

On a weblog I frequently read, someone misquoted Jack
Benny's "I'm thinking it over" from the "your money or
your life" routine as, "I'm thinking. I'm thinking." I
corrected him, and someone else who believed the same
thing, but one of them pointed out that several
"Google" hits come up if you do a search with the
words "Jack Benny" and "I'm thinking. I'm thinking."

Question: Are all these websites quoting the same
wrong prime source, or was there some other routine in
which Jack _did_ say, "I'm thinking. I'm thinking",
that somehow became confused with the famous "your
money or your life" response?

Subject: Pete Kelly's Blues, The Motion Picture

When I was growing up, I used to listen to Pete Kelly's Blues. I was a
bit young to catch the nuances of the show, but I liked what I heard.

Many years later, I came across a videotape of the film derived from the
stage show. I snapped it up, and wasn't disappointed. It had the flavor
of the OTR show, including its pithy similes, the music, and the whole
schmear.

Last night, I put the tape on for my wife.  I enjoyed the whole thing;
she got a bit edgy. When I asked her why, she said, "It's long, and some
of it is getting a little old."

It hit me: to those of us who listened to the show, every bit of the film
evoked memories. To someone without that background, there was more
content than story. I wish I'd have gotten her to listen to a Pete
Kelly's Blues recording first.

Jim Cox reminded us:

Announcer Fred Collins died on August 6 at about 82 years of age. I don't
think that has surfaced on this forum.

I hadn't seen it and am saddened to find this out. He was at one of our
FOTR conventions only a few years ago. I was able to speak to him and
get him to sign my Science Fiction book.

He had some interesting announcing stories to tell too.

Good man, he will be sadly missed. Thanks Jim, for the catch.

Subject: Marian Jordan

The "myth" about Marian Jordan lives on. In Alfred Balk's just released
book, "The Rise of Radio," he writes:

"For 18 months in 1937-38 it [FM&M] aired without Marian, reportedly due to
fatigue or a nervous breakdown, but in reality, alcoholism."

Subject: Show Titles

  Hi everyone,
I heard parts of 2 shows recently that I'm
hoping someone can give titles and air dates for so
that I can hopefully get a copy and finish my
listening.
One is an episode of The Whistler where a wife
wants rid of her husband and gets an idea from the
recent doings of a serial killer known as "The
Doorbell Killer".
The other is an episode of "Lights Out"
concerning a woman who gets rid of her mother-in-law
by throwing her down a well in the woman's basement.
I'd be very grateful for show titles and air
dates, if anyone has them.
      Thanks in advance.

Subject: Smilin' Jack and The Black Hood (and Orson
 Welles)

I knew there was something else I wanted to put in
my previous posting!
My Hickerson Guide is packed away and unavailable
at the moment, so I'd appreciate some additional
assistance from you wonderful folks.
I've heard the initial audition episode of "Smilin'
Jack" from (I think) 1939. Am I right about the year?
Also did the series make it to a regular run? If so,
for how long, and are there any episodes known to
exist besides the one I heard?
As for "The Black Hood", pretty much the same
questions. I've heard one episode from (I think) Aug.
1943. How long was that show on, and any other
episodes exist? And I believe both shows were on
Mutual, am I correct?
Ok, I just thought of one more [removed]
the infamous Orson Welles diatribe being discussed
recently. I've never heard it and would really love
to. Anyone know where I can hear it or obtain a copy?
Smilin' Jack, The Black Hood, and Orson
[removed] there's a trio to be reckoned with! :)
                    Questioningly yours,
                         Ken

Subject: A pleasant reverie

I was eating breakfast while the TV provided background din -- one of those
cable news networks -- and paying little attention to it. It came time for
one of those 5,000 daily teasers, a plug about what was "coming up" ... you
know the kind ... "stay with us, for when we come back ...." They were
informing us about a U. S. senator they would be interviewing shortly (after
a half-dozen commercials). I try to tune such promotional chatter out. But
there followed something very striking this time. It was some scratchy but
distinct, very memorable organ music, then a caustic laugh. I looked up and
the senator's picture was on the screen. Before going to the commercial
break, a familiar recorded voice said: "Who knows what evil lurks in the
hearts of men?" (Appropriate for a senator, I thought.) Then the picture
faded.

I wondered to myself: well, I'm guessing 80% of the audience didn't know
what the heck that was all about. But then I pondered ... what percent of
twenty-, thirty- and fortysomethings are even watching a cable news program
at this hour? Most of them are at work, and most of the rest may not care
about those kinds of features anyway. So maybe most of those watching did
actually "get it." There is evidence repeatedly in the modern age that
something existed before computers, cell phones, DVDs, blackberries, TVs and
whatever else we use for entertainment and communication. It's nice to be
reminded from time to time.
