Subject: Juvenile serials, or series?
Sara and/or Malcolm Long ask for children's serials, other than the
ones they list (which they've already heard.) They then list nine
programs, some of which are not "serials." Speed Gibson and both
"Jerry's" are certainly serials, but Father Knows Best is not, nor
Chandu, and for much of his run, neither was the Long Ranger.
Some of the true juvenile serials (with continuing story over
multiple programs) which are not on their list, would include:
Cinnamon Bear
Adventures of Superman
Jack Armstrong
Little Orphan Annie
Captain Midnight
Terry and the Pirates
Other kids shows they might enjoy, which were complete in one
episode, and thus not serials:
Archie Andrews
Bobby Benson
Straight Arrow
Sky King
Sgt. Preston of the Yukon
Hopalong Cassidy
Baby Snooks
Our Miss Brooks
The Green Hornet

Subject: Re: Pseudonyms and Radio Scripts
Mike Thomas asked:
I know that many authors wrote under different names than their
own for a myriad of reasons, but did radio script writers ever tend
to do this at all?
Yes, some writers did use pseudonyms.
Most notable were E. Jack Neuman who frequently used the pen name John Dawson
and Jack Johnstone who used the pen names Jack Bundy and Jonathan Bundy.
E. Jack Neuman usually used the pen name John Dawson when he was reusing
script plotlines he had previously written or adapting scripts written by
others.
All 18 multi-part YOUR TRULY JOHNNY DOLLAR stories by Dawson have their
origins in radio scripts that Neuman had earlier written for several series
including YTJD; JEFF REGAN, INVESTIGATOR; RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE;
NIGHTBEAT; and THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE.
Jack Johnstone used the Bundy pen names when he was writing for SUSPENSE.
In 2009, I wrote an article, "The Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Multi-Part
'Matter'" which appeared in the October & November 2009 of "Return With Us
Now. . . .," The Newsletter of the Radio Historical Association of Colorado.
This article details script reuse involving YTJD by several authors including
Neuman and Johnstone.
If so, why?
Reasons seem to be unclear.
Also, if someone did write a script under a pseudonym
would that name be on the script itself or would their real
bname e on the script (if at all)??
Normally only the pseudonym would appear on the script.
Signing of for now,
Stewart Wright
