Hi Folks,
Chris Holm asks about OTR books he's adding to a list. Commercial: RADIO'S
GOLDEN YEARS by Frank Bresee & Bobb Lynes is still available (only $20
postpaid) check or money order to : Bobb Lynes, PO Box 561, So. Pasadena, CA
91031. Makes a nice gift.
Andrew wondered about the pun on the Harris/Faye show. I'm sure they were
referring to the famous singer, Jessica Dragonette.

While pursuing scholarly research to discover the true name of Chilly
Willy's beloved stove (I believe it was Smokey Joe, but results are still
pending) I came upon a comprehensive discussion of Calvin and the Colonel.
At the end, it mentions that there was an effort to animate the adventures
of the gentlemen in the 1930's that resulted in two short movie cartoons.
These have probably been mentioned repeatedly in the OTR newslist, but they
were new to me.

Since Elizabeth's had to go cold turkey from the Internet, is there a way to
send a greeting to her?

In my sometimes inaccurate mind there is a James Thurber-OTR link not yet
mentioned on this list, as far as I know. It is this:
Thurber wrote a short story entitled something like "Sitting in the
Catbird Seat", or maybe, "The Catbird Seat."
An excellent part of OTR history is the fabled baseball broadcaster, Red
Barber, who frequently used the phrase, "...sittin' in the catbird seat."
Example, if Brooklyn had the bases loaded with no outs and a weakening pitcher
while trailing the Yankees by one run in the tenth, "The Dodgers are sittin in
the catbird seat now."
I expect that the phrase may have been common in the 30's and 40's, but I
never have noted it used except by Thurber or Barber, maybe because I was
raised in catbird free (as far as I know) South Dakota.
Elizabeth, be well soon.
Regards,
Andy Ooms

Radio Theater of Chicago was the National Radio Theater led by Yuri
Rasovsky who haunts the Internet, writes for Audiobooks magazine and is
still producing new time radio when he can. If you need to get in touch
with him, I might still have his email address around here somewhere.
His programs were regular listening for me back in the seventies. At the
time they produced such classics from Literature including The Odyssey and
more.
Email me for the information.

Subject: Tuning In to Books
Chris Holm, speaking of books, noted,
I was thinking that everyone who has put out an OTR related book in the
past year or so, or has one coming out in the near future, could put in
a plug for their book so I could make a semi-complete list of everything
I've missed.
Well, I did mention that there's going to be a trade paperback version of
/Radio's Captain Midnight/ being issued from McFarland. But I didn't
mention that they're not going to reprint the hardback version again
(it's been through two printings), and the warehouse has only a few of
them left.

Subject: Happy 80th, WNYC!
Please check out [removed] when you can - it's a
wonderful timeline, with plenty of archival audio, celebrating WNYC's 80
years of broadcasting. It's really one of the most fun and well-put together
multi-media presentations of radio history I've ever seen and heard. Plus
most of it is relatively unsung, radio history-wise - with the exception of
Mayor La Guardia's famous reading-of-the-comics during the newspaper
deliveryman's strike (which actually only happened three times, on July 1st,
8th and 15th 1945).
I'm also planning on attending WNYC's 80th Anniversary evening of "Selected
Shorts", which takes place on Wednesday October 20th at Symphony Space in
Manhattan ([removed]). According to the station,
"Eli Wallach, Blair Brown and Ivy Austin [will] read stories about radio and
New York City by Dawn Powell, John Cheever, James Thurber, Alison Townsend,
Linda Pastan and David Lehman."
Here's a New York Daily News report on the anniversary:

Subject: SPERDVAC convention printed program
As you may know, SPERDVAC (the Society to Preserve and Encourage Radio
Drama, Variety and Comedy) is presenting our 20th Old-Time Radio Convention
during Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 12, 13, and 14, 2004 at the
Hacienda Hotel near LAX. It's our way of thanking and honoring the folks
who made radio broadcasting during the "Golden Age" so wonderful and
entertaining. We've invited all our Honorary Members plus others to attend
the banquets as our guests and many of them will participate in re-creations
of OTR shows and on panels. Those participants include: Harlan Ellison,
Frankie Thomas, Jan Merlin, Tommy Cook, Hal Stone, Eddie Carroll, Harold
Gould, Alan Young, Janet Waldo, Art Linkletter and many more. There will
be upwards of 400 people attending this, the biggest OTR convention on the
West Coast. For more information and registration forms, see
[removed]
This year we will have a printed program for attendees to use in guiding
them through the convention. We have space available for your
advertisement or message in the program. The rates are: $100 (full page),
$50 (1/2 page) and $25 (1/4 page). Camera-ready ads should be sent
directly to me, BOBB LYNES, [removed] BOX 628, SOUTH PASADENA, CA 91031. Your
check or money order (payable to SPERDVAC) must accompany the ad. No credit
cards please. The deadline is Friday, October 29, 2004. If you have any
questions, email me at iairotr@[removed] or call me at (323)256-5879.
It's a great way to reach out and contact OTR fans and nostalgia fans in
general with your message or service.
Bobb Lynes,
Convention Chair

Slightly off-topic, but here [removed]
Somebody just mentioned Henry Morgan in connexion with the Thurber-based
RV sitcom "My [removed] Welcome to It." Back in the 1960s, Morgan was a
regular on the [removed] version of "That Was The Week That Was."
Did anybody else catch the revived version of "TW3" on this past Thursday's
(97/16) edition of ABC News' "Prime Time Live"? This is supposed to be a
regular feature on the slightly revamped "Prime Time." I didn't catch the
name
of the inginue doing the Nancy Ames shtick of singing some of the past week's
news in a humourous [removed] overall I liked the new segment.
Said segment was just a little too clever and irreverent to last in today's
cathode-ray
climate, so I recommend we all try to catch it while it lasts. If only ABC
could cajole
Tom Lehrer out of retirement to write the lyrics.
BTW, Elliott "Ted" Reid, one of the cast members of the original American
"TW3"
will be at FOTR next month in my home state of New Jersey. Go to
[removed] for more info.

Subject: "Thin Man" question
On the OTR version (and movie version) of "The
Thin Man", Nick Charles is always telling people
that his life as a detective is over and that all he
plans to do is relax and 'look after his wife's (Nora)
money'.
My questions to all of you are:
What was Nora's maiden name (if indeed, it was ever
known)? And if she came from such a wealthy family,
what was the source of all her family's wealth?
Another OTR fan,
Kenneth Clarke
