1947 Lassie debuted on ABC. It was a 15 minute show about an
extraordinary collie. Animal imitator, Earl Keen provided the whines and
other dog noises. The announcer was Charles Lyon; Marvin Miller and

CLASSICS & CURIOS
Episode 30
The Radio Browsers: Yuba, Tuba, Jelly, & Jam
It's radio Browsers time with about fifty minutes of big band music
and fun trivia taken directly from DJ. Eddie Hubbard's studio tapes. The
time of broadcast is not given, but this show takes us back somewhere in
the 1980's. Among featured recordings are "I Only Have Eyes for You,"
"I've Heard That Song Before," "Paradise," "I Don't Care If the Sun
Don't Shine," "Nevertheless," "There Must Be a Way," "All of Me," and
"Exactly Like You." Two of my favorite curio pieces are "When Yuba Plays
the Tuba Down in Cuba" and "It Must Be Jelly 'Cause Jam Don't Shake LIke
That," Performing those tunes are artists like Johnny Mercer, Helen
Forrest, Nat King Cole, Don Cherry, the Mills Brothers, Jo Stafford,
Rudy Vallee, Jimmy Dorsey, Andy Williams, and more. Two sample trivia
questions are: 1) Can you name other performers who had a fruit
mentioned in their name, like Don Cherry? and 2) Can you name other
songs with three words compounded into one, like "Nevertheless?" Still
another question that comes up: Can you name the first and last million
seller by Andy Williams? Eddie spares us having to hear local radio
commercials in Chicago by playing extra tunes like "There Will Never Be
Another You." Just a reminder that Eddie's original studio tapes are not
filed in chronological sequence, so the answer to "Phil's Phooler" at
the end of the show must remain hidden away for a future broadcast.
