Subject: Re: foreign accents on OTR
Hello again--
Speaking of foreign accents, I've always wondered which part of England that
"reporter for the London Times" came from in 'Frontier Gentleman.' John
Dehner was a terrific radio actor who came too late into his own (c. 1958)
to be fully appreciated, and "Frontier Gentleman" was a great show, same
comment, but I've been all over England many times and have yet to hear the
accent that J. B. Kendall used. Was Dehner consciously trying to avoid a
similarity to the stereotyped upper-class English twit so often heard on the
comedy shows of the time?

Subject: Andy Devine
Sean Dougherty asked:
*who was Devine's employer on the radio?*
Andy Devin was a character actor with very raspy voice and was over
weight. He was seni-regular guest on the Benny Program in the 30's and
40's and was on many other programs as a guest.
In 1951 he was Guy Madison's side kick, "Jingles" on Kellogg Cereals
"Wild Bill Hickok" until [removed] dropped the show and it was multi
sponsored until 1956. The show went to TV, with the same cast from 1951 -56

Subject: Spark Plugs
In a message dated 2/10/2008 6:18:50 [removed] Eastern Standard Time,
[removed]@[removed] writes:
2) When he wasn't pushing Johnson's Glo-Coat on "Fibber McGee and Molly,",
Harlow Wilcox was busy selling Auto-Lite spark plugs and its other products
on
"Suspense." On a few shows, I heard him mention a new spark plug that
wouldn't cause radio and TV interference. Was that a problem back then? I
have a
vague memory of the picture on our tiny TV flipping and flipping while a car
idled outside, but I may be misremembering.
The answer is YES. Spark plugs caused a lot of problems with reception. In
the rabbit ears days of TV, the whine could be heard and it would change as
the car accelerated.
Sounds like a NPR Car Talk question as to why this happened.
Onne must remember what the first radios were really just static generators
that sent an agreed upon message.
Happily haven't thought about the spark plug problem in quite a while. Went
the way of carburetors I guess.

From: _Grams46@[removed]_ (mailto:Grams46@[removed])
the evangelical lutheran church in america (of which i am a member) is the
name for one of the larger lutheran bodies in the united states ...
the lutheran hour is still a presentation of the lutheran church missouri
synod - a more conservative group of lutherans
Dear Kathy-
As a present member of the former, and a "child" of the latter, I know that
all well!
Back to THE LUTHERAN HOUR:
It's present, half-hour, "multi-transcription" (pieces recorded at different
times)
format is distinct from it's early, one-hour, live production. There are a
small handful
of vintage broadcasts circulating, and they make for fascinating listening.
Lovers of "old-fashioned" public speaking might be interested in Dr. Meier's
style; Rev.
Billy Graham claims him as a big influence. And the live, large-chorus,
well-produced &
engineered music can be very powerful.
There's a terrific book covering these years, A MAN SPOKE, A WORLD LISTENED
(and at its height, there was considerable truth to that) that does not
stint in covering
the details of early radio: production, networking, financing, etc.
Best,

Subject: Ubangi's
With the discussion on whether or not Fred Allen's remarks about
seeking shade under a Ubangi is racist or not, the fact remains that
women of the Ubangi tribe did place large plates in their upper and
lower lips, which was seen as attractive. The Ubangi tribe were natives
in the Congo/Zaire region. Young girls had small plates placed in their
lips between the lip and jaw/upper palate. As they grew the plates
became larger. Thus, Allen wasn't saying anything racist (imo) but
merely that there would be shade under these plates. (I recall seeing
pictures of these women in the National Geographic 50+ years ago).
And there were other tribes who thought beauty was having extremely
large looped ear rings, which stretched their lobes out of a normal shape.
And the Chinese had foot binding.
And in this country there is a big industry in plastic surgery with
certain enlargements.
Some times it seems people believe nature needs a lot of help with

Benny radio and TV
program co-stars - Dennis Day and Frank Nelson? The contact might be a
surviving relative
or former business agent. Contact me off-line, please.
