Subject: June Issue of RADIO RECALL

The PDF of our full-color June issue of RADIO RECALL was emailed to
those subscribers who chose it, while the B & W hard copy will be
sent out via USPO to the rest next week.

If you couldn't make either the SPERDVAC convention or the Cincinnati
one, two intrepid reporters tell you what you missed. Melanie
Aultman, a MWOTRC member in Florida, covers the west coast event,
while Mark Anderson, also a member, attended the Cincinnati affair
from his new home base in Erie, PA.

Digester [removed] "Bob" King of Kansas has an informative article on
Sherlock Holmes' appearances on radio prior to 1930 and King has
added an introduction by Dr. John H. Watson. Two recent OTR books are
reviewed in this issue. Maury Cagle evaluates John Rayburn's book:
"Cat Whiskers and Talking Furniture" while Cort Vitty does the same
with Randal Hall's hardback, "Lum & Abner: Rural America and the
Golden Age of Radio."

In addition, there is a detailed obituary about Dennis Crow, "Mr.
Cinnamon Bear," as well as two short pieces dealing with "Reveille
With Beverly" and the writing team of Bob Tallman and Gil Doud.

As always, subscriber information is available at <[removed]> in
addition to reprints of past articles.

Subject: Eveready Hour Fragment

There appears to be extant one solitaty, fragmentary broadcast of the
Eveready Hour, from 1928.

Can anybody here help me to track it down? It seems to be the one bit of
1920s broadcast material that I'm missing. (Although so much has turned in in
just the past year that I hesitate to be dogmatic.)

I have a hyperlink to an FM station's archives, which apparently holds
the broadcast, but when I use the link all I get is that station's LIVE feed.

     Thanks, all!

     Sincerely,

     George Wagner

Hi All,
I have been fascinated reading your postings and what a wide range of subjects
you cover!
I am based in the UK and researching a biography about the English Actress
Gertrude Lawrence. Although born in the UK a large part of her career was in
the US and I believe she appeared on many radio shows and these
are all the programs in the GOLDINdex database which credit this

are all the programs in the GOLDINdex database which credit this
artist. These listings are accurate as of March 13, 2008. The programs
are listed chronologically, partial dates appear first, unknown dates
appear last.

I very much hope to track down as many of these recordings as posssible but
have so far drawn a blank .

Can anyone help me find them please. All suggestions will be gratefully
received.
Kindest regards from Blighty.

Subject: A sweeping definition

Martin Grams says

the hobby of old-time radio is broken up into four factors.
The recordings, the books, the conventions and the clubs

Right on! What a succinctly comprehensive way to put it. While his
depiction covers the waterfront, it doesn't waste words getting there.

I'll keep that one.

1942 - The comic soap opera Clara, Lu 'n Em was revived on CBS (the
original show began in 1931 on NBC). Clara, Lu and Em were together
again for just a short while before vanishing into radio oblivion.

1947 - Lassie debuted on ABC. It was a 15-minute show about an
extraordinary collie. Animal imitator, Earl Keen provided the whines and
other dog noises. The announcer was Charles Lyon; Marvin Miller and
Betty Arnold played Lassie's owners. The sponsor was Red Heart dog food.

6/10

 From [removed] --

1909 - An SOS signal is transmitted for the first time in an emergency
when the Cunard liner SS Slavonia is wrecked off the Azores.

From Those Were The Days --

1924 - The first political convention on radio was presented by NBC.
Graham McNamee provided coverage of the Republican National Convention
from Cleveland, OH.

1947 - Sergeant Preston of The Yukon went national for the first time.
The show, with the Canadian Mountie and his trusty dog, King, continued
on the radio until 1955, beginning on WXYZ Detroit in 1938. Sgt. Preston
was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created The
Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.

1955 - The first network radio show to be produced with no script, The
University of Chicago Round Table, was heard for the final time on NBC.

1955 - "This is Monitor, a weekend program service of NBC Radio," was
heard for the first time. Notables such as Bill Cullen, Ed McMahon, Hugh
Downs, and Dave Garroway recited this line. It was a network cue to NBC
radio stations across the nation who carried the long form news,
entertainment and variety broadcast from New York City. Stations and
listeners who were "on the Monitor beacon" were entertained for six
hours or more each Saturday and Sunday night for nearly two decades.
NBC's Monitor was one of the last live network radio programs on the air.

The Campbell Playhouse 3/17/40 - I haven't heard this one in a LONG while so
I cannot recall if Tom is played by Jackie Cooper or Walter Tetley.

Cooper takes the title role in this HUCK. He's good, & it's one of the
Mercurys/Campbells out there in good condition; but alas, it's one of their poorer
productions.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938 five-part, one-week mini series scripted
