Subject: Steve Dunne

I would not consider Howard Duff as a "victim" of the Un-American Activities Committee.
His name appeared in the RED CHANNELS book and the reasons cited were (simply summed up in
one sentence), "guilt by association." He was the star of a radio program that was based
on stories written by Dashiel Hammett, and Hammett was considered guilty at the time,
so therefor Duff was among the names. Thankfully, unlike most of the actors and writers
that appeared in RED CHANNELS, Duff's career was not seriously injured. Within a couple
years he was doing supporting roles on numerous radio programs (even playing the lead in
a couple SUSPENSE dramas) and had a successful career as the guest star on TONS of television
programs.

The fault lies not in Steve Dunne's appearance as Sam Spade. Heck, any actor who followed
that role was going to be compared to. The fault lies in the scripts. The first two or three
years of THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE were heavy and adult. Spade shot a woman in the back in
cold blood, he stole money from a dead man's wallet, he hitched rides on the back of
street cars in San Francisco without paying, he slept with married [removed] you get the idea.
Other radio detectives were created for radio and you can tell they were attempting to do the same,
but fearing censors, networks, sponsors, etc., they were more tame compared to Sam Spade.
When the major script writers for SAM SPADE ventured off to other radio programs, the new writers
by 1950 had experience writing for other radio detective programs and thus the SAM SPADE program
became an imitation of the same detective programs that had initially attempted to mimic SAM SPADE.
The scripts for the Steve Dunne season were not very good, at least, when you compare them to the
first three years of the series. He didn't sleep with married women, he kissed Effie often
(which was not done as often in the early years), he drove a car in two episodes and hitching rides
on the street car was no longer apparent, and he returned money to clients when he was disgusted
with the whole affair. A completely different Sam Spade from the early years. (Though I found
"The Soap Opera Caper" funny and cute -- every character in the story had a soap opera style
life and the music was temporarily replaced with organ music to mimic a real soap opera.)

Subject: Looking for a scary show. Help please

I'm looking for a particular episode of a scary show. I think it might be an
episode of Escape or Lights Out, but I could be wrong. It features vampire
bats. Men are prospecting with Geiger counters for uranium in the jungles of
South America. They get lost and one by one they are sucked dry of their
blood by vampire [removed] sound effects on this show were really good. I
particularly remember the squeaking sounds of the bats as they descend on
their victims, getting louder and louder until they drown out the victim's
screams. Good stuff! Can anyone help me with the show name and episode and
date if possible? A million thanks in advance.

Sing Dennis.
