 From Those Were The Days

7/25

1933 The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly,
Helen stayed 35 years of age throughout the entire series. The show used
two Helen Trents over the years. The first Helen was played by
Virginia Clark (for 11 years) and the second by Julie Stevens (for 16
years).

1933 During his fourth Fireside Chat, [removed] President Franklin D.
Roosevelt showed why the homey, warm, comfortable discussion was,
indeed, a fireside chat. The President stopped the discussion on the air
and asked for a glass of water, which he then sipped. Newsman Robert
Trout is credited with coming up with the name, Fireside Chat, because
of real moments like this.

1943 Foreign Assignment, was first heard on Mutual. The title role of
Brian Berry was played by Jay Jostyn, who also starred in another
popular radio drama, Mr. District Attorney.

Episode 37

Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers: Big Band Themes with Vaughn, Louis, Les, &
the Duke

Big Band theme songs highlight much of this Browsers musical quiz show
from 1992. One of my favorite band leaders, Vaughn Monroe, sings big
band themes, and our challenge is to identify the songs and which bands
they are associated with. We hear Louis Armstrong play "Sleepy Time Down
South," and the Browsers ask us to name the song Louis first used as his
theme. The Browsers further challenge us to name themes used by the
bands of Les Brown, Duke Ellington, drummer Ray McKinley, "Rio Rita" Ted
Fio Rito, and trumpeter Sonny Dunham. Another question focuses on band
leaders whose first and last names begin with "B." One double-B leader
is Blue Barron. Can you name another? Also who had hit recordings of
"East of the Sun and West of the Moon"? How about naming songs with the
words "sun" and "moon" in the lyrics? While you are at it, can you name
songs that mention the name of seasons? Amidst all the questions in this
episode are recordings like "Blossoms on Broadway," "Whispering,"
"There'll Never Be Another You," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Tonight We
Love," "Goofus," "Cherokee," "Memories of You," "Smoke Rings," and
"Perdido." Featured performers include Whispering Jack Smith, "Old
Maestro" Ben Birnie, Wayne King, Charlie Barnet, and Glen Gray and his
Casa Loma Orchestra. By the way, Glen Gray's first band was called the
"Orange Blossoms," and as early as 1929 played a mixture of hot jazz and
sweet ballads that Benny Goodman would perfect in the 1930's and 1940's.
In 1934 and in 1935 (when I was born), Gray's band was the first swing
band to appear on a commercial radio series, namely, "The Camel
Caravan." Although he carried the title of band "president," Jerry
actually did not take over as official front man until 1937. Finally,
this Browsers show closes with Cole Porter's "It's Alright with Me."
(Again, we'll need to wait until a later show for the answer to Phil's
"Phooler" at show's end since Browsers shows are not all chronologically
catalogued by weeks and years, and you will notice that Eddie mentions
Phil's big band newsletter [now out of print] called "Browser Notes."
Here's a reminder that in the tradition of "Browser Notes" Browser Bob
Knack publishes "The Great Escape" newsletter which is available for
free online at [removed]) So let the music and fun begin as we
join Eddie and the Browsers.

Our thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting original Browsers
studio tapes for high quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time

Episode 3

It's Make Believe Ballroom Time is in Chicago for this episode. We are
telling the story of Cleo Brown, stride pianist and vocalist, who had a
very limited recording history but a wonderful lifetime of music
performances. She reached National acclaim. Then were telling the story
of the United States in the mid-1930's with facts and statistics. Later
we pass on the history of the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago and listen to
the Ted Weems Orchestra broadcasting live from there with his great
vocalist Perry Como and his whistler Elmo Tanner. Another remote
broadcast of the Dich Jergends Orchestra.

Subject: Fred Allen/Jack Benny feud
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I've often heard about a feud which existed between Fred Allen and
Jack Benny.
Was this an actual feud or just an ongoing publicity stunt? Was there any
animosity
between Fred Allen and Jack Benny? How and when did it start? Was it as bad
as
the feud between Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons?

I have an episode of "Information Please" with Fred Allen that
mentions Benny
in one of its skits. It sounded more like some good natured ribbing to me.
Does
anyone have any further information or comment on this issue?
