Dum-de-dum-dum!
I'm happy to report to all you fans of "Dragnet" & Jack Webb that Thunder's
Mouth Press,
an imprint of Avon Publishing Group, has just re-released a trade paperback
edition of the
1958 book "The Badge: True and Terrifying Crime Stories That Could Not Be
Presented on TV,
from the Creator and Star of Dragnet" by Jack Webb. The new edition retails
for $[removed] and has
a new introduction by James Ellroy, author of "[removed] Confidential."
As for the re-issue, I have to give Thunder's Mouth/Avon credit for
re-releasing this book
especially since there is no longer the Ed O'Neill TV "[removed] Dragnet" with
which it can be cross-
promoted. Also, the original typeface of the 1950's original seems to have
been retained. Up until
yesterday, I only had a beat-up paperback edition of "The Badge."
Unfortunately, I do, however, have some doubts as to whether Mr. Webb actually
WROTE
said [removed] Let's face it: in 1958, JW was still doing the B&W TV version of
"Dragnet,"
producing and starring in movies like "The [removed]" and "--30--," pusuing his
jazz hobby,
making love to and marrying beautiful women, and recording concept LPs with
spoken-word
versions of songs like "Try a Little Tenderness." Where did Webb ever find
time to write a
book on which his name is prominently given as the author?
Maybe there's a certain OTR historian who specialises in "Dragnet" &
"Superman" on this list
who can hopefully shed some light on the actual extent of JW's involvement
with this project.
That's about the size of it.

I recently picked up a DVD edition of an old (1935) movie serial, The
Phantom Empire, starring Gene Aurty. The cover of the DVD case lists
Mr. Aurty as, "Radio's Singing Cowboy."

Herb passed away Friday. He had been ill for some time.
Herb and myself started the Old Time Radio Digest Magazine.
He was also a part of the Cincinnati Convention in the early
developing years. He has been out of the OTR loop for several
years. He was one of the founding members of the Cincinnati
OTR Cincinnati Radio club, and we met at his print shop for
several years. Herb was a good friend and I will miss him.
