Subject: RE: unfinished business
Jim Cox's remarks about the commonplace angst of missing a
concluding episode of a serial tale are correct. I can't attest
to the soap operatic ones, but I know that as a boy in the 1950s
... when the networks were trying all they could to keep their
nighttime audiences tuned in ... I was not a fan of the
five-a-week strips of Johnny Dollar, Mr. Keen, The Great
Gildersleeve, Fibber and [removed] Why? Friday nights in small
town Texas meant high school football, and you didn't miss a home
game. So I missed many program conclusions. The other common
interference - atmospheric. If there was a thunderstorm between
us and the station in Dallas, maybe we could get a little better
signal from the one in San Antonio ... if not there, maybe Des
Moines ... but for the most part, it was a lost cause.

Subject: Jack Benny in Casablanca
Steven Thompson said:
Writer Scott Edelman seems to have proven it to be true with an ad posted
on his LiveJournal page. It's from 1943 and announces a contest to spot
Benny in the picture and win free passes to a later attraction! Here's
the lnk.
A lot of us were pretty confident that we'd found Jack over Sam's shoulder
in an opening cafe scene, but then a member did some visual forensics akin
to [removed] government techniques for determining if someone was, say, Saddam
Hussein or a double, and claimed that it wasn't him. Here's one of our
pages on [removed] you find him somewhere else, let me know.

Ryan Hall mentioned the excellent dramas that still go out on BBC Radio 4.
A couple of websites that might interest readers of the Digest interested in
old BBC radio dramas include Nigel Deacon's Diversity website ( just Google it
! ) and Bob Cook's website devoted to Saturday Night Theatre
[removed]
That site also includes an article by Roger Bickerton on the history of SNT.

Subject: Kenny Delmar as Senator Claghorn
In late 1946, a lawsuit was filed against Kenny Delmar alleging that he stole
the Senator Claghorn character from a play he co-wrote with another actor
three years previous. The case went to court but the judge stayed the suit on
petition of Delmar's attorney, who pointed out that the alleged agreement was
made under a Dramatists Guild Writers contract, which called for all suits to
go to Guild arbitration before court decision. During arbitration, it came to
light that Delmar had made recordings ten years before and the records proved
that what he did was his.
I sought out info and the only thing I found remotely of value was a comedy
show he did over CBS where Delmar played the role of "Dynamite Gus," similar
to the Senator Claghorn character. Also, in 1946, Senator Theodore G. Bilbo
of Mississippi had been quoted as bitterly resenting the manner in which
Kenny Delmar had depicted
Southern office-holders. When the movie IT'S A JOKE SON was being filmed, the
producer offered Bilbo a chance to play a southern senator in the
motion-picture, even offering to get him a membership in the actor's guild,
but the senator declined out of principal. Of course, this doesn't have
anything to do with the suit described in the first paragraph, but I was
wondering if anyone knew who filed the suit against Kenny Delmar in 1946 and
what the name of the play was?
