In #132, Kenneth asks:

If you cold choose 1 OTR program, update it, and bring
it to television (no matter the genre) what would it
be? (snip) I mean updating not only historically,
but with the modern advances made in technology as well.

My choice would be Johnny Dollar. Even the opening would work. Think
of all the contrived ways (especially in the 5 parters) they make up for
Johnny to open with a ringing phone and him saying "Johnny Dollar". He
had to answer other peoples' phones, etc. Today, Johnny could whip the
ringing cell phone out of his pocket. Similarly, all the expense
reporting could be done via laptop, palm computer, etc etc.

It looks to me "Yours Truly Johnny Dollar" would be a natural for the CSI
era. I'm also surprised there's never been a modern day anthology of
"Suspense," like there have been of "The Twilight Zone" (repeatedly), "Alfred
Hitchcock Presents" and "The Outer Limits."

Subject: Arthur Godfrey

Does anyone have suggestions on where I can find an episode of Arthur Godfrey
and His Friends from December 17, 1952 (either the TV or the radio versions)?
Godfrey had an revealing ad lib on a cigarette commercial in which he
commented, upon smoking a Chesterfield, that the "these things are going to
kill me."

I fear that it no longer exists. There seems to be a big gap beginning in
1952 with the exception of a few shows, such as the La Rosa Firing.

Subject: Buck Rogers 1939

Among OTR people, the accepted date for the first broadcast of the brief,
three-times-week, 1939 Mutual run of "Buck Rogers In The Twenty-Fifth
Century" is April 5th (a Wednesday). But I haven't been able to spot Buck
Rogers listed on Mutual stations in the online radio pages of the April 1939
New York Times, Chicago Tribune, or [removed] Times.

The first listing for the run that I've spotted is for Monday, May 1st (NYT:
5:45 on WOR; LAT: 5:30 on KHJ).

Listings of afternoon baseball broadcasts on Mutual in NY and Chicago
complicate things somewhat.

Anyway:

Have I missed any April listings for BR in those papers? Were there April
1939 broadcasts of BR only heard outside the NY, LA, and Chicago regions?

I welcome any and all comments and it would be nice if the April 5th
broadcast date will either be confirmed (with clear evidence) or corrected.
Thanks.

[removed] And a Mon-Wed-Fri series would most likely start

Interesting question. How would you update a western, say "Gunsmoke" or
"Have Gun, Will Travel"?

Subject: Inspiration for the "Unity House" on SUPERMAN?

I came across an interesting article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle of June 19,
1932, part of which follows:

************

14-YEAR-OLD MAYOR HOLDS TOWN RALLY AT CHARITY FETE

Jewish Federation Is Teaching Children to Carry on Its Activity.

The first "town meeting" of the season of a "town" within Brooklyn was held
yesterday afternoon when a 14-year-old mayor delivered his closing speech
before a group of "prominent citizens."

Daniel Karp, the mayor of "Federation Town," a municipality organized for
children members under the auspices of the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish
Charities, presided at the meeting of more than 100 "citizens" held at the
Unity Club, Bedford Ave. and Dean St. (...)

"The children are being trained with the idea that they will in years to come
aid the federation in its work of charity as their parents do now," Mrs.
Isaac Meyer said. Mrs Meyer is co-chairman of the junior organization with
Mrs. S. Maxwell Joffe. Robert Joffe is coach of the children's division of
the federation.

************

Robert Joffe was SUPERMAN producer Bob Maxwell, and Mrs. Joffe was his
mother. If you're familiar with the SUPERMAN storylines "The Hate Mongers
Organization" or "Clan of the Fiery Cross" (or have read the radio chapters
of my new book, "Flights of Fantasy: The Unauthorized but True Story of Radio
& TV's Adventures of Superman"), you know that a youth organization called
"Unity House" plays a major role. Not so far removed from "Unity Club."

I also wonder if the "14 year-old-mayor" headline served as inspiration for a
TV episode called "Jimmy Olsen, Boy Editor" in which teens take over
Metropolis for a city-wide "Youth Day."

Lastly, I find it ironic that Bob Maxwell - who would become a producer of
several radio and TV shows for children & families - was, at this time,
writing sex stories for adult pulp magazines. Wonder if his mother knew
about that?

For some reason I like to know what other shows were being broadcast at a

If anyone knows of a similar link for North American radio shows I would very
interested.

Subject: The Goldbergs on the silver screen

In the throes of our Great Depression, Gertrude Berg created and
starred in a radio drama about a Jewish family living in the Bronx,
the Goldbergs. It enjoyed high ratings on network radio, despite the
anti-Semitism in the [removed] in that era. Years later it made its
transition to television, becoming the first successful video sitcom.
Berg detailed the whole story in her autobiography, "Molly and Me."

This week a new film documentary, "Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg" was
released. It's directed and produced by Washington, DC filmmaker,
Aviva Kempner, whose prior documentary on Hank Greenberg was highly
acclaimed. This independent film draws heavily upon stills of the
radio series, clips from the TV programs, and other historical
materials.

Since this is an independent motion picture and distribution will be
limited, you'll probably not be able to view this at your local
theater in Paduka, Azusa, or Pine Ridge. However, the film is
scheduled for short runs at several theaters, primarilly in New York,
Connecticut, New Jersey, and California. In addition it's also
scheduled this summer for movie houses in Bryn Mawr, PA, West Newton,
MA, and Des Moines, Iowa, but some of them for only one night.
