Subject: Hello and "Night Beat" record set
I'm a "once again" subscriber to the list; I subscribed some time ago and
recently started getting interested in OTR, going through several programs
at [removed] and other sites on the web.
I found something recently in my travels at Goodwill and was wondering if
anyone might have some additional info about it. In with several other
RCA Victor box sets of 45s from the late 1940s, I found one called "Night
Beat".
Of course, I'm familiar with the show, but it was strange to see a 45 rpm
box set of an episode. The box has a rather poor line drawing of a man
talking on a telephone, the title of the show and the words "An NBC Radio
Production" on the lid. The actual records are pressed on blue vinyl with
simple blue NBC labels; they don't mention RCA Victor, but were probably
pressed by them.
The records contain one complete episode - I didn't catch the name of the
show, but it was about a secretary in a doctor's office that mixes up the
records of two patients so a many believes he is going to die and the hero
of the show and the secretary have to track him down before he kills
himself.
After the show opening, there's an announcer that comes on saying
something to the effect that "Usually at this time you'd hear a
commercial" and giving a pitch to advertisers to buy ads on the series,
discussing how timely and popular mystery and detectives shows are.
I was wondering if anyone else has run into this set or if NBC produced
"sample" sets like this for any of there other series. If so, I'd be
curious if there was any printed material that came with the set or if it
was originally part of a larger promotional kit for NBC radio shows in
general.
After listening to it, I can understand why Columbia won the "war of the
speeds" for longer format material. Flipping sides six times to listen to
a half-hour drama is just silly.

Subject: favorite Christmas show
My favorite show by far is the Grand Central StationChristmas Miracle.
It is a show that I cannot help but stop and listen to again if I stumble
across it. Also, I think the 1938 Christmas Carol is the superior of the
two shows and some of the differences would bear discussion some time
when I have the time. Thank you for presenting both versions. Thanks to
everybody who has participated and of course Charlie Summers who makes it
all possible. "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night." Kurt

In this show of the Quiz Kids, Clifton Utley is the host, instead of Joe
Kelly. Was he the original host of the show? If so, how long was he host?

Subject: BEST CHRISTMAS SHOW
My answer to Larry Jordan's question as to subscriber's best (favorite)
Christmas show. Mine is
The Amos & Andy Christmas show broadcast from the 1950's. Where Andy got
a job as a department store
Santa. I thought it was hilarious and endearing at the same time. As
Andy would say, "Oh floorwalker!!!!"

Greetings, OTR friends and Happy Holidays!
I lump all of Jack Benny's Christmas shows into one pile and call them my
favorite.
I play them back to back while I'm wrapping presents and my holiday would
not be complete unless these great recordings were played.
That's my vote. Ho Ho Ho!

everyone that Lionel Barrymore would do the Christmas Carol on the Rudy

My annual listen is the episode of Duffy's Tavern entitled "Miracle on Third
Avenue", dated 12/22/48. It is sentimental, uplifting and entertaining at the
same time.
