From Those Were The Days
10/16
1939 Radio listeners welcomed The Right to Happiness on the NBC Blue
network. The 15 minute drama turned out to be one of the longest running
shows of its kind. It moved over to CBS in 1941, then back to NBC in
1942. Fourteen years later Right to Happiness returned to CBS where it
stayed until its last days in 1960. The show had a theme song, Song of
the Soul, and what seemed like a cast of thousands. It just took a lot
of different actors to play the continuing roles over a 21 year period.
1945 Barry Fitzgerald starred as Judge Barnard Fitz in His Honor, the
Barber, which debuted on NBC.
10/17
1919 The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was formed.
1938 This was a big day in Tinseltown. NBC moved to the corner of
Sunset and Vine, the 'Crossroads of the World'. The new Hollywood Radio
City drew thousands of visitors ready to fill studio audience seats for
popular radio programs.
1938 Captain Midnight was heard on radio for the first time, on
Mutual. The Captain flew his single engine plane all over the place
fighting crime.
10/18
1922 As the British observed the wild growth of radio in the [removed],
they realized the potential of broadcasting in their own country, as
well as the need for its regulation. The British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) was established on this day to monitor the development
of the radio biz in Great Britain.
1943 The first broadcast of Perry Mason was presented on CBS. In the
15 minute (Monday Friday) shows, Perry was played by Barlett Robinson,
Santos Ortega, Donald Briggs and John Larkin.
10/19
1937 "The freedom of the press is a flaming sword. Use it justly, hold
it high, guard it well." The radio classic, Big Town, made its debut on
CBS radio. Star reporters at the Illustrated Press, Steve Wilson and
Lorelei Kilbourne, were played by Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor.
Tell the Story was the theme song. Sponsors included Ironized Yeast
tablets and Lifebuoy soap.
10/20
1930 - One of the most memorable of all radio shows, "The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes", was first heard on the NBC Red network. Its debut
entry, "The Speckled Band", featured William Gillette in the role of the
famous detective. Gillette introduced Holmes to New York audiences as
early as 1899 ... on the stage, not the radio, of course.
1932 - Journalist Robert Trout joined CBS. Trout became a household name
to CBS listeners -- and they later became loyal viewers of Trout on CBS-TV.

I have been able to locate about 30 of the transcriptions of People Are Funny
and I enjoy them very much. Does anyone know of a source for additional
shows? Most of mine are from the mid-50's and I would like to find some from
earlier dates.

Subject: The Green Hornet / Lenore Case story arc
The transition of The Green Hornet from a criminal to a hero whose secret
identity is known by three more people began with the opening scene of "High
Pressure" (October 14, 1947). As a result of declining circulation numbers,
Reid's father sends his secretary, Linda Travis, to the East to check up on
his son and report back to him any details she observes.
This brief scene was nothing more than a tease for the audience since Linda
Travis does not arrive in the East until the episode "Marked Money" (October
21, 1947). A punk named Jerry Jerome is shot and lies dying in a hospital
bed. Britt Reid suspects the boy will talk when he regains consciousness,
naming the man who shot him. When all efforts to get a reporter into the
hospital room fail, Travis suggests she play the role of a nurse, since she
formerly was one. Reid hires her, unaware she is working for his father. (The
background about her training is never disclosed, but it was most likely
through service in the war.) At the hospital, Doctor Shottin, assigned to
Jerome's case, arranges for Travis to be the visiting nurse as a favor to
Reid. But Shottin is under the thumb of Rod Pomeroy, the gangster responsible
for shooting Jerome. The two had collected 20 grand on a little extortion
proposition and when Jerome failed to split the profits, it was Pomeroy who
pulled the trigger first. Jerome dies - but not before telling Linda Travis
about Pomeroy's criminal career. Travis phones Reid to give him the news,
revealing the murder weapon as the same that killed Talbot a couple weeks ago
- an unsolved murder and extortion case that was pinned on The Green Hornet.
(The Green Hornet was accused of murder a number of times in 1936 and 1937,
but the murder referenced in this broadcast was not dramatized specifically,
and it appears it was written into the script as a plot element.)
Linda Travis' curiosity gets the better of her in "Exposed" (October 28,
1947). This is the episode that has been in circulation for decades (thanks
to Charles Michelson and his syndication, later Metacom (aka Adventures in
Cassettes). After hearing gunshots and sirens, Linda runs into the dark alley
and leaps into the rear seat of a parked car. She crouches to the floor to be
out of the way of the shooting she is sure will follow. The front door of the
car jerks open and Reid and Kato jump in. She overhears the conversation and
discovers the secret identity of her employer. Britt asks for 24 hours to
think about how he will deal with the situation and she agrees.
In "Too Hot To Handle" (November 11, 1947), concerned about his son Britt,
Dan Reid comes east to seek information. Having learned from Linda Travis
that something important has to be discussed in private, the old man is
impatient. Alone in the apartment, Britt lays his cards on the table,
admitting to his father that he is The Green Hornet.
In "The Man on Top" (November 18, 1947), the senior Reid tells his son that
Police Commissioner Higgins could use the assistance of The Green Hornet. The
police are tied with red tape so The Green Hornet arranges a secret
rendezvous to discuss how he can assist. This is the beginning of when
Higgins starts covering for The Green Hornet and the two work hand-in-hand.
In episodes that followed, Reid's father went back to the West Coast (The
Green Hornet adventures took place in New York City), along with Linda
Travis. And when Britt and Kato ventured to the West Coast, such as "Tickets
to the Rosebowl" (December 30, 1947), Travis jumps back into the action
briefly for the excitement. This also comes in handy when Oliver Perry
continues to return and expose Britt Reid publicly as The Green Hornet, and
Higgins and Travis cover Britt's tracks. All of this takes about 42 pages in
the GREEN HORNET book I co-authored, and to reprint all of this and the
script excerpts is too large to reprint it all here, but this is a quick cut
and paste for a "brief" summary.
Miss Case also gets a membership card in the elite club, by confessing she
knows the identity of The Green Hornet, in private, to Britt Reid. That story
begins back in 1940, but climaxed with the broadcast of "Miss Case Keeps a
Secret" (February 17, 1948), when she confronted her employer.
I'd also like to mention that most of the story arc I described above has
been released in a single box set (released twice) through Radio Spirits,
responsible for getting them into circulation so I recommend you buy the sets
and support their on-going CD releases, as they continue to put out
un-circulated radio shows of THE GREEN HORNET.
