Subject: Jack Armstrong ... The All-Mysterious Boy?

A few days ago, I picked up a book, "Jack Armstrong's Mystery Eye," a
1930s boys' book by Stanley J. Wallace. There became a tradition of
Whitman Publishers to have stories about major media characters such as
Little Orphan Annie, Captain Midnight, and Jack Armstrong printed as Big
or Better Little Books. However, the Jack Armstrong of Mr. Wallace's
book was not a champion athlete at Hudson High; he grew up in India. The
story opens with him working on a farm, and he and his pal, Dick, decide
to run away. He's developed powers, taught to him by an Indian Yogi.
More like Chandu than the adventurer who hawked Wheaties.

Mr. Wallace did a sequel.

Not all Jacks Armstrong are the same.

Subject: Thanks to OTR Old-Timers and Amos 'n' Andy

Thanks to all of you who responded to my posting about collectors that were
around at the beginning of the hobby. Please keep the remembrances coming.

Does anyone know if back issues of hobbyzines or newsletters from that
period are available anywhere?

Spurred by Amos 'n' Andy's appearance on History Detectives, I've been
introducing my little brother to early serial Amos 'n' Andy lately. Does
anyone maintain a list of what A&A exists from the '20s, '30s, and early
'40s and where to get it?

I have maybe a dozen shows from 1929, and about 4 from the '30s, but I know
that more are out there that I don't have.

[removed] I do own a few reels of microfilmed A&A scripts, but I'm talking about
recordings.

I have to question this. If the company with which he made the agreement
ceases to exist, I don't think it's enforceable.

Subject: Re: Public Domain

IANAL, [removed]

The "Public Domain" DOES exist, but not much as anymore as a "drop-zone"
for material to fall into when their copyrights expire -- if for no other
reasons that, here in the [removed] at least, (1) copyright is now virtually
*automatic*, occuring without the intervention, and indeed quite possibly
without even the KNOWLEDGE, of the copyright holder; and (2) the law was
recently amended, so that copyrights don't expire until 70 years (!) after
the author's death! Even the lack of a copyright notice on a work is not
enough to vitiate the copyright, if action is taken quickly to provide
notic. That means that if tomorrow some 16-year-old kid -- a modern-day
member of some brand-new "Beatles"-type group? -- writes up a nice song
and eventually dies at the age of 80 -- hardly a very unrealistic scenario!
-- that d*mn bloody song is going to remain under copyright for the next
134 (!) years. And even THAT assumes no further amendment to the copyright
law!

Today, "Public Domain" exists primarily as a place for kind and generous
souls to deliberately and intentionally place their works for complete
freedom of usage and alteration, for the good of all, and without any
hope of recompense. It's not difficult to do: A notice on the work that
says "The author places this work into the Public Domain" is QUITE
sufficient to renounce all copyright in the work. But it DOES need to be
an *explicit* act. If such a "Public Domain" notice ain't there, then
it's COPYRIGHTED, period.

Now, in the days of OTR, things were quite different. Back Then, copyright
was NOT automatic -- you actually had to apply and pay for it. Furthermore,
you also had to give the proper Copyright Notice. Those who failed to do
so, but published anyway, generally speaking LOST any chance to copyright
their work: it fell into the Public Domain. This made things MUCH easier
for people generally -- if it had a Copyright Notice on it, it was
copyrighted; if it didn't, it wasn't. This may no longer be true, but for
those works which ARE still under copyright, DON'T expect to be able to
use ANY of it for a very long, Long, LONG time. :(

Hope this helps!

[ADMINISTRIVIA: While discussing the fate of Radio Spirits is fine, let's
not get into non-authoritative speculation about copyright [removed]
while I'm taking a week off to enjoy some family time. --cfs3]

Subject: Re: Do you buy OTR?

The answer in my case; is yes,

I am supremely picky about audio quality generally, and am generally very
careful of whom I get OTR from soundwise. I buy fairly often from the
First Generation Radio Archives. I also get transcription discs.

I listen to a MASSIVE amount of OTR and since I usually only listen to
quality sources, I constantly need a frush influx of OTR.

I spend an average of 250-400 bucks at the convention annually,
too. There, I do my OTR-book shopping, also.

I also get OTR by transferring hi-quality reels for people. So, in
essence, barter, as well.

If you count Imagination Theater, I also subscribe to their CD subscription
service.

[removed] I am willing to transfer Radio Yesterday (Dave Goldin) reels, as
they're usually in good sound. The Don Aston reels that I've come across
are generally decent too. Especially if you have any RADIO YESTERYEAR
REELS with interesting obscure shows or decent titles and wish a quality
transfer, get in touch with me. I''m willing to furnish references.

Subject: Radio Spirits, Radio Classics and Radio
  Schedules

I'm not all that surprised to hear about the demise of Radio Spirits and
it's parent company. To be frank, I was afraid something like this would
happen when MediaBay bought up Radio Yesteryear and Adventures in
Cassettes. Too bad I can't foresee the Mega Millions Lottery with such
accuracy. Before the MediaBay acquisition, I did business with all three,
Radio Spirits included. And I must say that never had a moments trouble
from any of them. All three had wonderful customer service as far as my
dealings with them went. Unfortunately, not so after the Media Bay
acquisition. I think the situation had gotten better in recent
years. Unfortunately, by this time, Radio Spirits just wasn't putting out
that much that appealed to me. I had always hoped they would take the
example of Adventures in Cassettes and present consecutive episode
collections, but, alas, they never did.
With the demise of MediaBay, I wonder what is going to happen to the Radio
Classics channels on both Sirius and XM, since MediaBay and Radio Spirits
furnished programming and advertised heavily on those channels. I don't
listen that much to those channels anymore, but sometimes, when I am in the
mood, I will tune in. XM's channel offers a lot of variety and I do hear
some shows on there that I have never heard before. I hope that the
channel survives. But, I have my doubts. Fortunately, while OTR was a
major reason I purchased my XM, OTR is not what I listen to mostly on the
XM, but the music.
On another note, I did a Wikiepedia search on OTR just today and found a
wonderful link which has the radio schedules of the New York, Los Angeles,
Chicago and Washington. Wish they had the Atlanta stations, but I feel
very fortunate to have found a site that has so many radio schedules on
it. I remember this site being mentioned on here before, but if it has, I
apologize for the repeat. For those who don't know about the site, I hope
this link works.
