Subject: 'Restored' Old Radios
Mark Kinsler writes,
While I watched customers examine an old console radio at the regional
antique mall recently, it occurred to me that it wouldn't be too hard to
fake a restoration on one of these, or any other tube-type radio, for
that matter
He then gives one approach to "restoring" an antique radio with a hidden
IC AM radio chip, and finally asks,
Does anyone know if this sort of thing is ever used to get old radios
'working' again, and if it's ever used for fraudulent purposes? Is there
other fakery in the old radio market?
Actually, I doubt that the fakers would bother. Last year, I saw a
novelty radio for sale in a local drugstore with "tubes." The "tubes"
were fake, with apparent grids glowing white rather than filaments
glowing reddish orange. (Rather like a very coarse woven mantle for a
Coleman lantern.) Nobody who'd ever seen a real tube radio would have
been fooled for an instant; however, it apparently sold well enough. We
all have seen the fake Cathedral radios with solid state AM-FM functions
and a side cassette player drive so one can hear OTR tapes in the gadget.
Today's youngsters wanting "retro" don't know what the old things really
look like in operation.

My book WORDS AT WAR features (among many other topics) some of the most
interesting commentary about Cavalcade of America, Lux Radio Theater, The
Man Behind the Gun etc. These sections of the book are all based on my
original research in archives such as the Cecil B DeMille collection in
Provo, Utah and on interviews with people like Arthur Miller etc.
The book can be found in university libraries in Spain, France and at
Oxford Univ. But the airline tickets are expensive. True, its' also
available in libraries closer to your home. But I'm also selling
autographed copies at a discounted price. Contact me at Khovard@[removed]

Subject: antique radios
Mark Kinsler comments about retro fitting a transistor AM radio into an
antique console set along with an amplifier in order to make the set work to
pass it off as a restored set. Actually it would be much easier and simpler
to just restore the original chassis back to working order than go through
all the step Mark outlines.
Does anyone know if this sort of thing is ever used to get old radios
'working' again, and if it's ever used for fraudulent purposes? Is there
other fakery in the old radio market?
I have seen cases where the original chassis was replaced with a transistor
set, one or two somewhat well done, but most were butchered/hack jobs. Either
way it destroys the value of the antique radio.

The "Big Town" show I have that contains the "Beeee-yooooo!" foghorn has a

Subject: Marla moves to Rego Park
Marla Slosberg's son, Lee, has asked that the following be posted on
the Digest, regarding a medical update on his mother.
"Mom was transferred to a nursing/rehabilitation facility on Dec 1st
and she is now in Room 215-A of the Park Terrace Care Center, 59-20 Van
Doren Street, Rego Park, NY 11368. She is slowly continuing her road
to recovery and is adjusting well to her new environment.
To friends wishing to send cards and flowers to her, I would ask you to
please wait a little longer as her memory loss is still evident.
However photographs are welcome (with name of person written on the
back) which can be used by therapists to help regain her memory in the
rehab process. These can be sent to me at: 435 East 79th St, Apt# 9-0,
New York, NY 10021.
Anyone in the area who wishes to visit her is welcome; visiting hours
are 11 am to 8 pm. Be advised that in her present state, she may not
recognize you or recall your past relationship. However she will enjoy
your visit as she has retained her friendly, talkative and loving
nature.
As she continues to recover, I would say based upon her current
progress, that you will probably see me with her at the 2006 FOTR
Convention to express my thanks in person and meet her extended family
in the OTR community.
I will keep you posted and I ask for your continued prayers and support
for my mother.

Great news. Thanks Michael, & others who confirmed same.
Incidentally, these discs are just about the ONLY way to see the classic
Warner cartoons. They haven't been regularly scheduled on any broadcast or
cable networks for several years. Only Turner Classic Movies runs them<

Michael C. Gwynne wrote:
So, please tell me these old cartoon have escaped the "PC" noses!
Sadly, many old cartoons were edited for television. Sometimes to cut
down on the violence, sometimes to make room for more commercials. I
don't know about the WB sets, but some other recent collections have
suffered from using edited material--often it wasn't realized that the
material was edited until after the set was released and the fans
started to complain. Two examples of this are the recent Tom & Jerry
collection (which apparently edited out several "offensive" scenes,
presumably of the maid at Tom's house), and the Ren and Stimpy sets
(which say "uncut" on the cover, but which actually used versions that
were cut for syndication on Spike TV, making room for more
commercials). So it's not just a phenomenon of old cartoons--"Ren and
Stimpy" is not even 15 years old!
Jerry Beck's Cartoon Research site and
blog([removed]) occasionally discusses some of
these matters (and is basically my source for what I've said here,
along with stuff I read on toonzone).

Blue, Brown, Red, Orange. Oh well, its been forty years since I last valued
one of them things.
I learned it the same way with the exception of the "ravage". My
teacher was more descriptive. But anyway, you had the colors correct
the first time. Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Violet, and White.
My problem was that I slightly color blind and can't tell the
difference between brown and red or blue and violet for that mater.
Luckily, I don't think blue is one of the color on a resistor. Just
purple or violet.
I remember as a kid running to my mother and asking her to tell me
the colors on a resistor, I built a lot of Heath Kits and Elco Kits that way.
