Hi Everybody,
Bill ask about our thaughts about NBC and CBS radio coverage of D Day. I
feel NBC did a better job. I have listen to both a lot over the years and
NBC did a great job. In fact right after the first message aroun 3-32 AM
NBC pick up Edward R. broadcast info while CBS miss part of it. I wish we
had more of Mutual radio coverage. Take care,
Walden

Hello,
I haven't written in for a bit. After listening to a favorite show last night
I though I would chime in.
In addition to being a lifelong fan of OTR, I also enjoy hard boiled
detective stories in book, movie or radio format.
My favorite for perfect descriptive "hard boiled" lines is Pat Novak.
It's a art that, as a writer, I could never bail but I appreciate. Like this
one;
"She sauntered in, moving slowly from side to side like 118 pounds of warm
smoke."
Or
"I began to think about the .32 caliber pistol. It's a woman's weapon--well,
that doesn't prove anything. So's a bread knife if she's in a bad mood."
I would be interested to hear suggestions of other OTR shows that rival Pat
Novak for dialogue like this.
Cheers,
JM

Let us know what you think! For me, it's CBS.

Subject: D-Day Coverage
Bill Scherer asks which network best covered D-Day. I don't believe it's
constructive to use terms like 'better" or "worse," but to discuss differences
and preferences in the networks' coverage. I am in the middle of writing my
dissertation chapter on D-Day radio coverage and have to say that I notice a
difference in style between NBC and CBS. Having to stay on the air constantly
through the night and into the evening of the next day was a remarkable piece
of broadcast journalism by both networks. Talk about air to fill! The only
official news they could report was the limited information in the communiques
SHAEF. The networks both relied on dribs and drabs of information from the
pool reporters and, of course, Axis sources that reporters had to constantly
qualify. I find NBC commentators to be more dramatic and portentous than
CBS's, especially the way Robert St. John tried to express the weight and
importance of the event. CBS seemed to try and focus on the nuts and bolts of
what information they had and how they got it. The pool reporters in the field
seem to me to be the equalizers in coverage, giving a no-nonsense report on
what they'd seen and personalizing aspects of the event. I'd like to see more
emphasis on radio coverage of D-Day in memorial events since that is how the
majority of Americans learned first-hand about the sacrifices it would take to
end the war in Europe.
Thanks for bringing up the topic, Bill! OTR fans are the best.
Steve Kostelecky
