SAME TIME, SAME STATION

To quote from the web page:

The Golden Age of Radio was the creation of WTIC personality Dick Bertel
and radio collector-historian Ed Corcoran, and was first broadcast in
April of 1970. For the next seven years the program featured interviews
with radio actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians from
radio's early days.

This week we will interview both Dick Bertel and Audio Engineer Bob
Scherago from WTIC. We will also play excerpts from their audio
collections as well as a complete interview with Guest Don Ameche.

You'll also hear the latest in activities and happenings in the Old time
Radio Community.

You had me interested. Google " Zenith Model 12-S-471 Console Radio
(1940") for specifics; there was no adapter but a simple audio input jack
fit the picture.

You can Google "tv radio ready" for more hits.

Subject: TV radio ???

My grandmother in Sioux Falls, SD had one of those "TV ready" radios on her
front porch. I never heard her use it, nor did she get the picture
attachment -- if it ever existed. There was a jack on the back of the
chasis that said "Television" or something. I don't recall the brand of
radio, except to note that it was a console.

Her really big radio was in the living room. It had several dials for
tuning. I don't recall the brand of that radio, either. But I do know that
she was a faithful listener to her "stories" -- what she called the soap
operas.

And she had some beautiful pink flowers that sort of hung down. They were
called fuscias (sp) or something like that.

Subject: Re: Favorite "detective" or crime shows

1. Lord Peter Wimsey-BBC with Ian Carmichael. First rate, A plus,
unmatchable, perfection. never get tired of listening to Lord Peter saying
things like "Thankee, but it ain't quite like that old bean."

2. Johnny Dollar-because it was so well written. I'm a Private Investigtor
and when I get bogged down I like to listen to the serial shows as they
inspire me to get off my ass and look at a case with a different eye and
energy. I would have loved to sit down with Jack Johnstone and chew the fat.

3. Pat Novak-because of Richard Breen's hilarious metaphors. Or were they
similes? "She was pushing 40 hard enough to bruise it"

4. Nick Carter-because of the ridiculous writing (remember the Vampire people
in the park), the flubs, the other writing (Patsy says "Oh Nick I couldn't do
that. I'm just a girl") and the sound and acting and voices. It almost sounds
like a parody of what an old detective radio show should sound like. I'd bet
the Firesign Theater heard a few episodes before they did Nick Danger.

5. Sherelock Holmes w/John Stanley. Just discovered it- tough to beat the
Brits. (see #1)

6. Whitehall-tough to beat the Brits. (see#1)

On a side note I heard two shows called The Jack Webb Show. Easily the worst
show (pure drivel) I've ever heard in 40 years of listening. The writing
sounded like something a 7th grader would come with in an attempt to be funny
and witty. I was amazed to hear Richard Breen's name as a writer. He must
have had a bad hangover when he wrote that stuff.

Hi Folks. Further to my posting the other day about the BBC discs found at a
British Antartic Survey base, I got an email from Paul Wilson who had written
the original article. He says there are 500 discs, mostly 12'', plus a smaller
number of 10'' discs. They have still to be catalogued by the British Library
Sound Archives in London. Hopefully in the not too distant future we should be
able to see some sort of listing of what was found.
I saw Barbara's posting yesterday hoping that some original Paul Temple discs
might be amongst them. We can dream .... !!!

Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA / UK )
