Subject: radio and the wire services
It should be noted that while different Teletype circuits
provided news to radio stations written in "broadcast
style," as opposed to newspaper -- "The governor said blah,
blah, blah" vs. "Blah, blah, blah, said the governor" -- the
networks did not abandon their newspaper wires. The "A-wire"
was the main newspaper wire; the "B-wire" carried news there
just wasn't room (time) for on the A-wire (clicking along at
about 65 words per minute), or it was news the editors
deemed of secondary importance, or news that might have more
of a regional interest than national. As newspaper wires,
they carried much more detail than the radio wires.
Also, the networks were more likely to rewrite the copy
anyway, fitting information in and around their own
correspondents' reports and other time requirements. Back in
the day, with many more newspapers, both morning and
evening, and in recognition of their set deadlines, big
stories might break first on the newspaper A wire.
The broadcast wire was a boon to smaller stations with
little or no news staff and "doing the news" fell to
announcers. They were provided with formatted five-minute
newscasts and longer round-ups (for morning, noon and
evening newscasts) without much work -- at least, in theory.
It was often referred to as "rip 'n' read" -- but that could
get such an announcer in trouble because of typos or when
there were circuit or machine problems and the copy would
completely garble.
