I just finished listening to this fine series that starred our late
friend Harry Bartell. I wondered if anyone could tell me a bit more
about it? I know its an AFRS production but when was it produced? I seem
to recall Mr Bartell addressing it on the digest once but forget his
comments. Also the costar was John Anderson familiar on the screen but
had he done radio before. All the actors did well including another I
did not think about in terms of radio Sebastian Cabot who was listed in
the credits but I still have not figured out what role he played. was
Cabot involved in radio? Thanks for any insights. Dennis

Subject: "Inside the Doctor's Office"
I am a very new subscriber to the Digest, so I do not know if this
question has ever come up before. In the late 40's or perhaps the early
50's, does anyone recall hearing a program called "Inside the Doctor's
Office"? During that time I lived both in New York and Los Angeles, so
I cannot remember where I picked it up. The program consisted of a
daily dramatization of a patient, usually a woman, in her doctor's
office, being treated for a specific illness. I was familiar with
many radio actors, but an actress appeared on the show daily whom I'd
never heard of elsewhere:Adeline McNeary. To my best recollection,
Charles Irving was the announcer. The sponsor was KYRON, a diet aide
that was popular at the time. Pushing the sponsor's product was someone
they referred to as a New York physician, Dr. Frederick Dameron (?). I
have often wondered if he were a real doctor, or an actor. If anyone
has any further information on this 15-minute show, please reply. Was
Ms. McNeary known to do other radio shows? Was this a nationally heard
show, or was it just regional? I have been asking OTR fans in SPERDVAC
about this for many years, but no one claims to have ever heard this
show. Thanks!

My wife's grandmother is 90 years old and blind, but sharp as a tack. This
weekend we got her an MP3/CD boombox for her birthday! And now she's
listening to the Jack
Benny Show and Grand Old Opry and loving it!
This may be more NTR (NewTimeRadio) than OTR, but I tell you what I got my
90 year old blind grandmother -- Garrison Kiellor's Lake Wobegone Stories.
There are many collections available on tape and CD. Your library very
likely would have some. The entire shows for the last seven or eight years
are archived on the net (I recently lost my favorites, but the site
shouldn't be hard to track down. I think it's at Minnesota Public Radio.
You can either listen to the whole thing or specific segments. What you
can't do is download them. However you can record the streaming audio to
MP3 if you use program like Total Recorder (there are several out there that
will record streaming audio). I remember my grandmother tellling me that
Kiellor had the most wonderful voice she had ever heard. She absolutly
loved him.

Subject: Re: Arthur Godfrey
hello all (says she in her best Meredith Willson voice) --
Due to some personal business I wasn't able to respond to Lee Munsick's
excellent Arthur Godfrey essay of the other day, but it was most
enjoyable, and I've also been interested in the follow-up threads of the
last few days too.
Godfrey died when I was 10 but I grew up knowing who he was and
appreciative of his place in broadcasting history. I attribute that to
being born in a time warp. Sure, I knew about the firing of Julius
LaRosa, about how many people complained that Godfrey could be demanding
and difficult. But it also became clear to me that American
broadcasting wouldn't have been the same without Godfrey, and that he
deserves to be remembered for more than what little he's remembered for
now.
(I also know that Godfrey was one of the best ambassadors for flying
that there could have been, which means we airplane fanatics are in his
debt too.)
Lee thanked me the other day for giving him a chance to talk about
Godfrey. It's me, however, who should be thanking him for a post that
was nothing short of priceless, on a person I find endlessly
fascinating. I'm glad Lee has kept the Godfrey story alive, but I wish
he had more company than he did. His legacy (and his DC-3, too) deserve
a much better fate.

Subject: Family Theater series available in remastered
form
Five hundred and fifty episodes of Mutual's "Family Theater" series,
which aired from 1947 to 1969, have just been released in newly
enhanced recordings. Most of these programs featured top Hollywood
stars, beginning with the first show on February 13, 1947, "Flight From
Home" with Loretta Young, Don Ameche, and Jimmy Stewart.
Modern technology was used to clean up distortion on the original
acetate discs and magnetic audio tape to remaster them on CDs. "These
radio programs now exist in better sound condition than the original
broadcasts" announced Rev. Wilfred Raymond, the national director of
Family Theater Productions. Most the the stories aired involved family
unity, importance of faith and love, relationship problems, and
childhood difficulties.
Non-profit radio stations in Alaska, Nebraska, Oregon, Michigan,
California, New York, Ohio, and Nevada will be airing these programs
soon. Plans are underway to make them available commercially for sale
to public.

Subject: Jack Benny -- M*A*S*H anachronism?
As anyone with a fair background in history and popular culture knows,
it's not hard to spot anachronisms in the TV show M*A*S*H. The producers
and writers often threw in elements from the 1950s (and sometimes beyond),
whether or not those elements were present during the years spanned by the
Korean War (1950-53), so one can find plenty of references in the show to
events that hadn't yet taken place or books/films that didn't yet exist.
I've sort of mentally catalogued these anachronisms over years of watching
M*A*S*H reruns, and I recall one particular instance of potential
anachronism that I'm not sure about.
In the episode I'm thinking of, everyone is gathered in the mess tent to
watch a movie, and (as usual) the projector breaks down. To while away the
time as repairs are made, the gang resorts to the usual amusements,
including performing imitations. Radar gets up in front of the screen and
does a Jack Benny impersonation, complete with Benny's familiar
palm-along-the-cheek and outstretched hand mannerisms. My questions are:
Given that Jack Benny was primarily a radio comedian at the time the
Korean War began, was he using those stage mannerisms then ([removed], by
1950), and if so, how likely was Radar to have seen them?
Although Jack Benny started appearing on television as early as October
1950, it's probably fair to assume that Radar was already in Korea by then
and therefore hadn't yet had the opportunity to see Benny in that medium.
Certainly Radar could have seen Jack Benny in one of the several films
Benny made during the 1940s, but I don't recall his using the familiar
palm-along-the-cheek mannerism in any of them (either because he hadn't
yet developed it, or because he wasn't playing the same character as he
did on radio). We can probably also rule out the possibility that Radar
(who apparently had rarely travelled very far from his home in Ottumwa,
Iowa) had ever had the chance to be part of the studio audience for one
of Benny's Sunday night radio broadcasts.
So, how might Radar have been able to imitate Jack Benny's mannerisms
around 1950-51? Could he have picked them up from newsreels? Did Jack
Benny make any personal appearances in the Midwest during the 1940s that
an Iowa farm boy could have attended? Did Benny even use these mannerisms
that early, or did he only develop them once he was established on
television?
