I'm sure this has been mentioned many times, possibly even recently, but
there is an alley at the edge of Boston's theater district named Allens Alley
in tribute to you know who. A map of the location can be found at
[removed]'s+alley+boston&sourceid=ie7&rls=[removed]:en-US&oe=utf8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=us&ei=X-rcSdWdK4zqlQez0LD9DQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1 Or just google Allen's Alley Boston.

The SPERDVAC general lending library contains a Paul Harvey broadcast
from March 22, 1959, which comments, among other subjects, on a new record for
how many can cram into a phone booth. Ah, the good old days.
On a separate subject, the SPERDVAC library holds at least 12 'Rocky
Jordan' programs--many remakes--issued by AFRTS in the mid fifties. These are
the commercial free versions, featuring Jack Moyles as in the originals, but
substituting other actors for secondary roles and using organ fills rather
than a studio orchestra.
Lots of gold in them thar SPERDVAC hills.

Subject: Looking for OTR books

From time to time OTR fans who post here indicate that they have
searched in vain for a particular book pertaining to old radio shows
and stars. May I make a suggestion? There is a website called
[removed], or American Book Exchange. I don't know if anyone here
has mentioned it or not. You type what you're looking for into their
search engine, and it displays a list of copies. They are arranged
according to price (cheapest first), and ranked according to
condition. You can place your order right there, and even choose
shipping method. Then the individual bookstore who has listed the
copy you've selected handles the actual shipping directly to you.

This service has saved me a lot of time trying to hunt up obscure and
out-of-print books. I have bought some mint condition books for a
couple of bucks that sometimes cost $35 or more. It is a tremendous
bargain and you will be amazed at the offerings. The service is
excellent and so far, out of the dozens of books I've ordered, I have
never been disappointed.

Hope this helps.

John W. asked:

But in the Rocky Jordan show, Sergeant Greco is so
absolute in his hatred of the main character
that it is fun to hear them interact.
BUT who played Greco? I searched the
internet and missed finding it.

Sabaaya's assistant, Sgt. Greco, would like nothing more
than to
A) put Rocky away for life
 or
B) perhaps feed him to the Nile crocodiles.

Lou Krugman played Sgt. Greco

Signing off for now,

Subject: Earliest Paul Harvey

Michael Simons has a Paul Harvey broadcast from Feb 1960 and asked if
there are any earlier Ted Kneebone dates his earliest one as July 11,
1960. I have the opening minutes and the WENR station break before it
from 1947. I have been looking for the small home-recorded disc that I
know I have somewhere because I would like to fix a couple of skipped
grooves on the tape I dubbed decades ago as the second story begins.
I'll try to get to it sometime before FOTR. At Northwestern we had the
16-inch disc of a December 1950 Christmas Eve broadcast, but although I
listened to it, my catalog is not marked as my having dubbed it for
myself. However I believe it is in circulation somewhere. It contains
his often repeated Christmas story, and is probably the first time he
told it. at least on the national network. Does this ring a bell to
anyone? It might be circulating as "dateless" because I even have a
question mark in the catalog for the exact date, but I had probably
ascertained the year from other evidence on the disc.

Subject: [removed] Griffith

If I ever needed help finding an old radio show this is the place. I am
searching for the twice weekly radio shows that [removed] Griffith was on in 1933.
I don't know the station or the title of the program but since he was living
in Hollywood at the time I assume the shows were made here. There is scant
reference on the internet about the shows. Has anyone heard one of the shows?
Where can I find the shows? I hope to write an article about "Griffith on the
radio".
...thanks to all from "the old nbc page".

Subject: RE: ILL and "Private Eyelashes"

Linda mentions going to her public library and requesting the "Private
Eyelashes" book:

I asked the Librarian if she could request an Inter-Library find for
"Private Eyelashes." She loved the name, btw, but couldn't find it anywhere
(even nation-wide, I guess).

I don't know what database the librarian was using, but I just went to
OCLC/WorldCat (the primary database used by Inter-Library Loan librarians)
and found 30 [removed] libraries that have the book in their collections.

In my many years of researching OTR, I've found it an absolute necessity to
know the inside-outs of how to use OCLC/WorldCat myself (rather than rely on
a librarian's perhaps-halfhearted attempt to locate a particular item). In
most cases it helps the process if you can present the I-LL people with a
request to which you've attached the OCLC number and the names of the nearest
libraries that have the item.

Oh, and regarding Inter-Library Loan, I don't think it's been mentioned here
before, but most libraries have policies against ordering newly-published
books through I-LL. The library where I worked (I'm recently retired) has a
6-month rule. If you want to request a new book, you have to wait until six
months after the official publication date before the library will consider
filling it.

Also, if a book is catalogued as a reference item, libraries will most likely
not lend it out. Again, knowing how to search in WorldCat can help you,
because you can check each library to see if they've catalogued the book as
Reference or Circulating. Then you can give your I-LL librarian the short
list of libraries that circulate the item. This is particularly helpful
because most I-LL staff will usually try no more than five libraries for any
one request. If they receive five "Cannot Supply" messages from those
libraries, they will not look any further. Your request at that point will be
terminated.

Hope the above is helpful to those considering the I-LL path.

And Charlie is certainly right about other online spots.
One of my favorite is the Radio Detective Story Hour, where
you get not only those excellent old shows, but also a great
