Subject: Cogitations On Origins
Radio adventure programs -- Western, Detective, Aviation, etc., either
originated on the radio or were adopted to the medium. Sos or newspaper
comic strips.
Those that come to mind were adapted from comic books and strips
immediately are Little Orphan Annie, Dick Tracy, Terry and the Pirates,
Blondie, Superman, and Hop Harrigan. (Hop Harrigan, on the show, was
announced as appearing in "All American Comics Magazine." As a
youngster, I bought a lot of comics, and although they were American
comic books, but I was unaware that there was a publication titled
/All-American Comics/. Until I finally ran across a copy, I thought that
the announcement was just one of life's little mysteries.).
Some radio shows spawned comics, including Captain Midnight. Jack
Armstrong, The Lone Ranger, and (indirectly) The Shadow.
I'm sure there were others, but those are the only ones that come
immediately to mind.

This Saturday, "Those Were the Days" commemorates the 70th anniversary of a
fateful trip with an afternoon devoted to "The Glenn Miller Band in England."
With the help of big band historian Karl Pearson, we'll tune in to some rare
and fascinating broadcasts from the summer and fall of 1944, including a
broadcast from the American Red Cross Rainbow Corner Club (located under the
pavement in Piccadilly); Glenn and Johnny Desmond on "The Wehrmacht Hour,"
speaking and singing (respectively) in German; and the Miller Band's first
broadcast following the disappearance of Major Glenn Miller! Join us at 1:00
pm on WDCB ([removed] FM for you Chicagoans; [removed] everywhere).
You can hear music of a different sort this Sunday on "Radio's Golden Age,"
as we hear the great Kay Thompson alongside Lucille Ball on "Mail Call" and
singing in the "role" of Susan Hayward on "Suspense." You can hear "Radio's
Golden Age" at 12 noon CST at [removed] and again at 4:00 pm CST at
