That is a story by Arch Oboler called "The Word." It originally appeared
on "Arch Oboler Plays" in 1939, but was later re-done on a short-lived
series on ABC called "Think" or "ABC Radio Workshop" in 1953. The latter
story version starred John Lund as Michael and Joan Banks as "Eve."

Hello folks, someone recently wrote in asking for identification of the
following show:
Here's the basic plot: A couple goes up to
the top of a tall building (Empire State Building, I think, but might not
be). When they come down to street level, everyone else has vanished,
apparently leaving them as the last people on earth.
I believe that one is called "The Word" and was written by Arch Oboler. I
think it ran on his Arch Oboler's Plays series and was re-done a few times,
once with William Shatner, the only radio role I recall Shatner ever doing.

Just noticing the Ron Sayles post of "Birth and Death" announcement of two
of the King Sisters:
Alyce King was born on August 14th, which the same date that her sister,
Louise King died ( August 14th ). How often does that happen on the same
date? And, I think that Louise was married to band leader Alvino Rey. They
lived in Sandy, UT.

Subject: re: Which show is this?
sweetedit@[removed] asked about a show in which two
people ascend the Empire State Building, and when they
get to the top they realize everybody else in the
world has been wiped out. I have a copy of "The Devil
and Mr. O" from 10/8/871 with this plot line. It stars
Mercedes McCambridge. No title is given in the show,
but I've seen it alternatively titled "Where are you?"
and "Are you there?" Like everything else in that
series, it's a rebroadcast of a much earlier show,
with a new introduction by Arch Oboler. I'd guess it's
from Arch Oboler's Plays, perhaps in 1939 or 1940. It
clearly takes place when war is looming, or perhaps
has broken out, in Europe, but hasn't yet reached the
US. Of course, it could be Lights Out or another
program, but somehow it seems to fit the tone more of
Arch Oboler's Plays. Does anybody know the original
broadcast date, the title and the original series for
this episode?

Folks,
I spoke with Herb Ellis a couple of nights ago. He'd like to know if any of
his episodes of "One Out of Seven" (KGO, [removed]) are in circulation, and if
he could get copies. I only know of one with Jack Webb.
Anyone?
Thanks,
Michael

This was an episode of "Lights Out" entitled "The Word". I don't have

This does had the advantage of eliminating the problem of having
different levels when you are in the car. It completely gets rid of
dynamic range.
It also eliminated the problem of listening to the radio and having it suddenly get loud, then
your mother comes in and yells at you "Turn that down!" So you do, and a moment later,
you can't hear it. So you turn it up, and then it gets loud and your mother comes in and
yells at you again, etc.

I took a CD full of "Information Please" mp3s on a week long trip to
Colorado. It was a fun way to pass the drive through the mountains,
although I found out how much I don't know, which is not a good ego
builder!
Also, do not listen to Jack Benny on a crowded freeway. You may be
laughing too hard to notice that you are about to crash into a beer
truck!
