In 1943, WNAX, Yankton, SD, began a tradition of sponsoring "Midwest Farmer
Days."
In September of 1943, Virginia Payne (Ma Perkins) and Brace Beemer (Lone
Ranger) both appeared at the MFD event. I have audio clips taken from ETs
featuring both of them, as well as Fred Howard, who played roles on Ma
Perkins and Jack Armstrong. They are short, but interesting. If anyone is
interested in these, write to me at my email address. No charge for
these -- but I am still trading!

I just read about the recent death at the age of 85 of Australian-born
scientist

David Warren, inventor of the flight data recorder, known more commonly as
the"black box." Duz this mean that black boxes are essentially "Dave Warren
players"? Just a little plug for one of the premier OTR re-creation groups and
its founder, the late Dave Warren.

Yours in the ether and sometimes in the air,

Subject: Thoughts on Tom DeLong

We've lost another good man in the passing of Tom DeLong. On the shelves of
many of us are his "Radio Stars" and "The Mighty Music Box" among the 14
volumes he penned. I found him to be a very trustworthy author. While none
of us is error-free, and some of us don't come close, his works were
references you could pretty well put your faith in. If he said it, it was
so.

I recall a delightful evening we were seated side-by-side at an FOTR banquet
a few years ago. Wow, I was mesmerized by how open he was in sharing some
of his research, interview and contact secrets with me. He was a genuine
preservationist, humble of spirit and exceedingly gracious at the same time.

Tom DeLong reviewed several of my books for the SPERDVAC club's newsletter,
the Radiogram. Sometimes what he had to say stung. But I believe he was
objective and forthright and tried to be the best critic he knew how to be.
That's what a worthy pundit does.

I'm glad Tom was among us. He's one of the true legends in the province to
which we attempt to contribute.

Subject: Thomas A. DeLong, [removed]

I was saddened by Jay Hickerson's posting of the July 12th death of
Tom DeLong at age 75. He was truly, in the words of that revered
adage, " a gentleman and a scholar."

For several years, I've relied upon two of his OTR reference books on
a regular basis: "Quiz Craze: America's Infatuation with Game
Shows" (Praeger, 1991) and "Radio Stars: An Illustrated Biographical
Dictionary of 953 Performers, 1920 Through 1960" (McFarland, 1996.)
With McFarland, you usually get a book title nearly as long as the
first [removed]

I met Tom several times at FOTR and was struck by his love for OTR
research, his humility, and his gentleness. In our hobby, which
frequently attracts the loud and boisterous, Tom was a quiet,
dedicated figure and a tribute to "speak softly." As former Chairman
of the Board of Trustees at the Westport School of Music and author
of over a dozen well-researched books, he had plenty to brag about,
but never did.

In addition to the two books on radio of Tom's that Jay mentioned
(one on Frank Munn and another, "Pops: Paul Whiteman, KIng of Jazz")
he also wrote: "The Mighty Music Box", "The Telephone Hour: A
Retrospective" and "The Golden Age of Musical Radio."

We should all be sorry for his death but grateful for his enormous
contributions to the hobby.

 From Those Were The Days

7/25

1933 The first broadcast of The Romance of Helen Trent was heard. The
show continued on the air for 7,222 episodes and 27 years. Amazingly,
Helen stayed 35 years of age throughout the entire series. The show used
two Helen Trents over the years. The first Helen was played by
Virginia Clark (for 11 years) and the second by Julie Stevens (for 16
years).

1933 During his fourth Fireside Chat, [removed] President Franklin D.
Roosevelt showed why the homey, warm, comfortable discussion was,
indeed, a fireside chat. The President stopped the discussion on the air
and asked for a glass of water, which he then sipped. Newsman Robert
Trout is credited with coming up with the name, Fireside Chat, because
of real moments like this.

1943 Foreign Assignment, was first heard on Mutual. The title role of
Brian Berry was played by Jay Jostyn, who also starred in another
popular radio drama, Mr. District Attorney.

7/30

1937 The American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was organized. It
was part of the American Federation of Labor. The union was for all
radio performers except musicians. The union later became The American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to include TV folk,
as well.

1942 Stage Door Canteen was first heard on CBS. The show was broadcast
from New York City and 500 servicemen were entertained each week by
celebrities who freely donated their time for the war effort.

7/31

1933 listeners turned up the radio on this day to hear the announcer
introduce "Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy!" The show was one of
the longest running adventure programs on radio, continuing until 1951.

Subject: Allen Swift (1924-2010)

The current summer issue of AFTRA magazine pays tribute to Allen
Swift who died at the age of 86 on April 18, 2010 in Manhattan. He
was born Ira Stadlen in New York and chose his professional name by
combining Fred Allen and Jonathan Swift. After WW II, he was in the
casts of "Gangbusters", "Casey, Crime Photographer" and other radio
dramas. But his forte was voice-overs and commercials, recording as
many as 30 different commercials a day, ranging from beer to Jell-O
to Sanka decaffeinated coffee.

He became the voice of many cartoon characters, including Mighty
Mouse, Dinky Duck, and briefly, Howdy Doody. After his work on Howdy
Doody, he became the host of WPIX-TV's "Popeye the Sailor" in New
York City. For Terrytoons, he provided most of the voices on Tom &
Jerry from 1960 to 1962. Swift was an AFTRA member for 63 consecutive
years. He also appeared in several off-Broadway plays.
