The only Welles character I can think of whose middle name might
be remembered is John Foster Kane.

Dear John-

I think you're thinkin' of CHARLES Foster [removed]

Joe,

The WROW Recordings containing Johnny Dollar and Suspense were in the
possession of John Furman of New Amsterdam. I do not remember whether he made
the copies or a friend of his did in Troy. John may not be around anymore as
I have not heard from him in years. I do have some of those actual tapes and
I'll check and see if there is a name in any of the boxes.

Okay, I hate to admit to being dull, but what character would that
be? The only Welles character I can think of whose middle name might

Perhaps Welles's character's name is not so well known after all. True,
the middle name was "Foster," but the first name was "Charles," not "John."
Perhaps you were confusing Kane with "John Charles Thomas"--or all three of
'em, as Durante might say.  ;-}

Subject: Obscure reference of the week

Recently I was reading an undated script for EASY ACES. In it I came across
what has to be one of the most obscure references I have seen in a radio
script. Here's a few lines of the script. Goodman Ace is chatting with a
fellow employee, Charlie. They are comparing Charlie's father-in-law to
Ace's mother-in-law:

"Ace: Not that it matters, but is your father-in-law in good shape?

Charlie: He's got a strong constitution.

Ace: Constitution - you should see my mother-in-law - skin like parchment.
You can see Gwinnett right on her button."

Now, after some research I discovered Button Gwinnett was one of the signers
of the Declaration of Independence -- not the US Constitution. He was a
delegate from Georgia. He was involved with writing the Georga State
Constitution. A county near Atlanta is named for him.

Is it just me, or does that seem like a pretty difficult remark for even
radio's 1940s erudite listeners to catch?

Ted

Subject: Colonial Radio theatre

A local station carries imagination theatre who the first week of each
month does an installment of 'powder river' from Colonial Radio theatre.
This is a western serial from this group who seem to be in boston. Does
anyone know anything about them?

It is an adult production, think gunsmoke with updated cultural contexts.
Production values are first rate, writing not bad, and acting somewhat
mixed with some miscasting; in my opinion.

I often wonder about younger folk listening to this show. Do they have the
same perspective as do we old folk who carry in our head all the metafores
and other cultural information that disappeared when westerns became
extinct as the dodo.
