FOR THOSE WHO CAME IN LATE:
Actually, my late friend Lee Falk did draw the first two weeks of Mandrake
that sold the strip, but then turned over the ongoing art chores to Phil
Davis (who was later succeeded by OTR-buff Fred Fredericks). To keep this
on-topic, Lee worked for several years in the early/mid 1930s writing and
directing radio dramas for KMOX in St. Louis. One of his repertory cast
members was Marvin Mueller (later Marvin Miller). Lee later directed a
MANDRAKE radio recreation at an FOTR convention which reunited him with his
old friend Raymond Edward Johnson. They had worked together a half-century
before in the Office of War Information.

I've been meaning to post a query about the Eveready Hour's
oft-repeated Galapagos episode. Does this script survive (or any of
the 1924-25 Eveready drama scripts), by any chance? Judging from the
newspaper coverage I've seen, it sounds as if it is one of the
earliest dramas written for radio to feature first person narration.
But does anyone know if that's actually the case?
The Galapagos piece, telling the story of shipwreck victim Martin
Christianson, was adapted from an incident described in naturalist
William Beebe's 1924 book "Galapagos, World's End."
Judging firsts in this period with any degree of positivity is extremely
risky, given the generally-poor documentation of broadcasts and the
experimentation going on at local stations. The idea of
first-person-narrative drama grew out of the idea of dramatic readings
and monologues, both of which formats were very common during the
formative years of broadcast drama. So calling the "one of the earliest"
is most likely as close to accurate as anyone is ever going to get on
this topic.
There's no readily-available collection of Eveready Hour scripts. The
Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History holds the
archives of the N. W. Ayer advertising agency, which produced the
program, so that might be the best place to look for any surviving print
materials on the series.

I found KCEA, a radio station located within a high
school which also offeers internet broadcasting. The
format is big band and such including old-time radio.
Here's the url:

There are a few stations programmed by elementary
schools as well as high schools. These are the
smaller areas, more rural, underserved by
radio stations. Many of the ones I amfamiliar with
have metamorphosed into public radio stations
(listener sponsored), such as
WBGO (jazz). WNYE-FM is owned by the NYC Board of
Education but not sure what it programs these days.
It is operated by a consortium of organizations.

Subject: Lee Falk
Craig Wichman is not entirely correct that Lee Falk was no cartoonist.
Yes, he was the script writer for Mandrake and the Phantom for decades. He
did actually write the scripts, not farming them out to be ghosted.
Later and current Mandrake artist Fred Fredericks told me scripts came
directly from Falk, sometimes handed to him by the man. He did write
novels and was active in the theatre.
However, he was a multitalented man and he did also draw Mandrake
for a brief introductory period. It took too much time away from all his
other interest, and so he did turn the art chores over to another. It is
also probable that he created the basic image of the Phantom. It is hard
not for anyone with any artistic ability to contribute something to a
project they are involved in.
When I did some mini-comics for Ralston, for the brief Tom Mix
revival in the 1980s I not only edited and slightly rewrote an old story but
I did the storyboards. I also did some layout work for Marvel's "Monsters
of the Movies" magazine I edited although I am not known primarily as an
illustrator.
