Dear Walden-

From: "Walden Hughes"  <hughes1@[removed];

I believe we need to
consider a major factor with most of the OTR convention is the cost of
bringing in guest ... many of them live still in California ... REPS, FOTR
and Cincinnati needed to adapt to this
factor

With no offense meant, I would contend that they always have. And the
Greater NYC area seems to be pretty fertile in this area, based on the dozen
or so
FOTR's I've been to.

I can recall the days that
SPERDVAC convention dinner would have on a Saturday night between 60 to 80
people from the Golden Days of radio just for dinner

Saying this as gently as possible, your phrase, "I can recall the [removed]"
explains much of the change. As time passes, folks move On.

Reality can indeed be a harsh Mistress - but also a Bracer, for growth. I
continue to vote solidly with those who have written in this Digest to not
only
rejoice in OTR Fandom's Past, but to thoroughly celebrate its Present - and
to desire for it to have a Future.

Best to all,
-Craig

All of the Quiet, Please scripts do exist and are at the Library of
American Broadcasting at the Maryland campus. Mike Henry, who is on
this
list, can tell you more about them.

Wouldn't it be great if people like Craig Wichman would perform and
record episodes of Quiet, Please that are considered lost? Then
completists like myself would have all the episodes!!

is the 6/17/40 Lux Presents Hollywood version of "After the Thin Man." The
other is a little oddity called "Leo Is on the Air."

I have a Marx Brothers LP that features one of the shows from the 1930s. It
is 15 minutes also.

Thanks to Ron Sayles for having so much information on almost everybody.
There are performers he makes mention of whom most of us never really think
of. I was a great fan of Charles Webster, and I just noticed that he was
born on 11-19-01, in England. He must have come to the [removed] at a very early
age because there was not a trace of British in his delivery. I know he did
a lot of work in NY radio ("Backstage Wife", "The Falcon", "Gangbusters",
etc.), but I hear what I think is his voice on some of the WXYZ Detroit
shows, such as "The Lone Ranger". Can anyone tell me if Charles Webster
actually worked in Detroit, or are my otherwise expert ears being deluded?

Subject: Leo is on the Air - Fillers

Hi Gang -

In issue 358 of the digest, Ted RadioAZ inquired about "Leo is on the Air".
Leo refers to the MGM Lion. The program "Leo is on the Air" was sponsored
by MGM and was used to promote new movies by that studio.

Someone more knowledgeable than myself will probably post details of the
program
itself, but in my circle of OTR Traders, we used it as a "filler". Back
when we were
trading OTR programs on 1800 foot reels, we seldom had a complete reel (6
hours)
full of the same series. Many times the material on the tape was less than
six-hours,
and in order to not give blank tape (partially empty track) to our trading
partner, we would
fill the remaining tape track with something that would fit.

"Leo is on the Air" was a short program, and was one of many short programs
that we used
for filler material. I have several programs from this series on different
tracks of different
reels. I'm sure there are people reading this who have similar reels in
their collections.
It was an interesting program, but I don't know if anybody could listen to
six consecutive
hours of Leo at one sitting. I suppose there are complete reels
circulating, and obviously
the master discs or tapes are extant.

My Dunning books are 700 miles away, but I believe he covers Leo is on the
Air
in one or both of his books.

Subject: Lobotomies on the Air

Although we think of lobotimies as being something from the Dark Ages, the
first lobotomy wasn't performed until the mid-1930s and they did not become
common until about 1940. So in 1950 when the Dr. Kildare episode Tom
writes about was performed a lobotomy was still seen as a sort of cutting
edge (no pun intended) science. I wonder if there are any OTR programs
where a doctor recommends a patient take up cigarette smoking to lose
weight?

It's possible the British have different rules about programs vs shows,
because I know they refer to "television programmes" as well.

Subject: Update on Marla Slosberg

I received the following communique from Marla's son, Lee, who
requested I relay it on the her Digester friends.

Jack French
Editor: RADIO RECALL

"On Wednesday the 16th, I met with mom's team of therapists, doctors
and nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital. Her overall progress has been
great: improved speech and ability for limited conversation,
recognition of surroundings, and general awareness. With the help of
her therapists, she is regaining her vigor, mental strength, and sense
of humor. The rehabilitation unit has taken her to heart and I am
deeply grateful to them for all they have achieved with my mother.

While she has improved significantly in the past two weeks, and more
progress is forthcoming, we still have a long and difficult road to
travel. But now we can start introducing her to photographs of her OTR
friends. Any pictures, particularly those from FOTR convention, can be
sent to me. Please print clearly on the back of each photo the names of
persons depicted so the therapist can validate any associations Marla
may make. Photos should be sent directly to me: Lee Slosberg, 435 East
79th Street, Apt. 9-O, New York, NY 10021.

As she becomes more responsive, I intend to play audio clips of her
father's voice in "Duffy's Tavern" shows, as David Siegel has suggested.

I received a photograph of Jack French from him this week and will show
it to her tomorrow. When I told her that her OTR family is aware of,
and concerned for her, and they were getting regular updates about her,
I was rewarded with a huge smile so I know she got the message.

Please continue your prayers of support for her."

the log, but I got my copy from [removed]

other is a little oddity called "Leo Is on the Air."
The "Leo" name comes from the MGM lion as this was an MGM radio
presentation. It was obviously broadcast right around New Year
1937. It is a 15-minute review of some hit songs from 1936.
Oddly enough, all of the songs were from MGM musicals.
No idea who the announcer was, although the voice was a bit
familiar.
Anyone know anything more about this program?

In case you, or any other digest readers, would like to hear more of these
shows there are about 80 of "Leo Is On The Air" / "Hollywood Is On The Air"
shows included in my online archive. I have them listed in the archive as
"Hollywood Is On The Air"...they seem to have aired under both names.

The archive is located at [removed]
