I remember Charlotte Greenwood's radio show. My recollection was the
following: A man knocks on her door. When she answers it he asks. "How are
you Mrs Greenwood?" She says, "It is Miss Greenwood." He says, "I'm sorry."
She says, "Your Sorry."
It was a funny take as Charlette Greenwood was tall and plain. Most remember
her as Aunt EM in the 1950's movie Oklahoma with Shirley Jones and Gordan
MacRae.

Melanie asks:

During the l950s a popular US radio
show Johnny Dollar, ran an episode during which the hero was often
knocked unconscious and then transported to 'cloud nine' where he
was revived and lived to be a hero again in other episodes.

True?"

False. That wasn't Johnny Dollar, it was Richard Rogue in Rogue's
Gallery. The character was played by Dick Powell and while on cloud
nine, he visited his alter-ego, Eugor (Rogue spelled backwards).

Perhaps the poster who asked the question about the radio detective whose
hands were only "seen" was thinking of the old Dumont TV show, ROCKY KING,
DETECTIVE, starring Roscoe Karns. I remember that show. Rocky, frequently
interacted with his wife, but she was never seen. When speaking to his wife,
he spoke directly into the camera. I don't recall ever seeing her hands on
camera, but I suppose it's possible. Afterall, I was just a "little shaver"
at the time. Here's a link to some info about that show

Greetings Gates!
Let's communicate.
This is my semi-annual plea for OTR scripts to use in the classroom or for
community OTR recreations. Can ayone out there in the land of Fandom help a
brother out? Contact me with information either off-digest or on. Any help is,
as always, deeply appreciated. I am also looking for information about any
film festivals or nostalgia conventions that might be taking place this
Summer. Anyone know of anything? *sigh* I sitll have not figured out what to
do for a short vacation this year and my Summer break is winding away.

I thought Richard Diamond (on radio) was always too poor to have a
secretary. In one episode a client comes to his apartment to see him washing
his socks.

The unseen wife of a "radio detective" is no doubt one of those things we
all slightly misremember. It was an early TV detective, of course, namely
"Rocky King" played by movie veteran Roscoe Karns. He spoke to his wife,
Mabel, but she was never on camera, although sometimes her hand could be
seen handing him a cup of coffee, that sort of thing. The series was done
live, but a few video tapes of kinescoped episodes survive. It was on about
1949.

For Karen Lerner's customer who asked about the detective whose wife was
never seen, here is the answer. She was thinking about the wife of Rocky
King,
a TV detective on the DuMont TV Network from 1950-54.

The series was called "Rocky King, Inside Detective" and starred Roscoe
Karns ( a veteran movie character actor) as Rocky. His sidekick, a younger
detective, was played by Todd Karns (who was Roscoe's real-life son and who
had
appeared as George Bailey's younger brother in the 1946 film classic "It's A
Wonderful Life").

There was a very low budget on this show and, as an economy measure, Grace
Carney, an on-screen actress on the show, was asked to double as Rocky's
wife.
But there was no time to change costume or make-up -- this was live TV -- so
she simply performed off-camera. Viewers did see her hands at the dinner
table or wherever she was, speaking opposite her husband, Rocky. This gave
the
show a unique and interesting wife-at-home bit, and viewers liked it.

I have an episode of Arch Oboler's Plays (I think). The same identical
episode is given two different titles and dates. One is 1939-09-16 Suffer
Little Children. The other is 1939-11-25 Mirage - Miss American. It is 13:15
long. The show itself has a modern intro by Arch Oboler giving some
background on the show. The show itself seems to give the title of Miss
American, but it matches the description of Suffer Little Children from
radiogoldindex very closely. Does anyone know what this show really is?

  Thanks

The description of the detective with the unseen wife corresponds
pretty exactly to the situation on Dumont's TV series ROCKY KING,
INSIDE DETECTIVE. Always looking for ways to cut corners, the network
utilized Roscoe's real wife, Mabel, as his unseen-- but often heard--
screen wife, also named Mabel. Reportedly, his conversations with her
were one of the best-liked aspects of the show which was arguably the
most popular program that Dumont had.

Dear Friends and fellow lovers of OTR:

I had a question and I am confident that someone can answer it. On the
Jack Benny Program, Mary has a housekeeper named Butterly. I understand
that she is Rochester's neice. Is this the same Butterfly who played the
little black girl on Gone with the WInd? I believe that her name was
Butterfly McQueen. IS this accurate or was B. Mcqueen the older maid on
Gone with the Wind ? Is there a connection between Butterfly's?
