Subject: CBS World News Roundup

Jim Cox waxed all poetic about the World News Roundup's 70th
aniversary. Too bad CBS Radio and CBS News ain't what they used
to be.

I can't help but think that the man I grew up listening to,
Dallas Townsend, is spinning in his grave at the thought of how
they do the Roundup now ... 10 minutes, not 15, and laced with
all sorts of stuff that wouldn't have made it on the air back
then. When time is so limited, is it really that important each
Monday morning to know the top movies at the box office for the
weekend?

Every little second counts and it seems to me there are must be
some other happenings that deserve the time wasted on movies and
celebrities.

Subject: Re-enactment groups

I am trying to compile a list of all the various radio re-enactment groups
around the country. If you know of one, could you let me know? All I want
is the name of the group and where they are located. This is NOT for any
commercial purposes. I live in an area with a lot of seasonal visitors and
seeing some of our shows they ask if there are similar groups elsewhere. I
know there are, but I don't know where.

Thanks

Ted

Subject: RE: Oasis Cigarettes

>From Wikipedia:

"Winston tastes good like a cigarette should" is an enduring slogan that
appeared in newspaper, magazine, radio, and television advertisements for
Winston cigarettes from the brand's introduction in 1954 until 1972. It is
one of the best-known American tobacco advertising campaigns. In 1999,
Advertising Age ranked the jingle eighth-best out of all the television
jingles that aired in the United States in the 20th century.

That may be the source of the "They taste good" phrase. Or not.

Thanx,

Even as a New Yorker whose awareness of the Dodgers and the Giants always was
as California teams, there is no voice that reminds one of baseball more than
Vin Scully's. It's hard to believe that he's still at it. Because of digital
cable, I now know that he's even more amazing because for the games he
broadcasts, the Dodgers use the same feed for TV and radio, and he works
without the assistance of a color commentator. I believe he only broadcasts
games from the West Coast and when the Dodgers are in Arizona. He probably
does selected games elsewhere, but he has cut back. Scully's bio is at
[removed] --- he turned 80 in November.

So it was a great surprise as I've been trudging through the circulating
Suspense episodes to hear a younger but still very unique voice of Vin Scully
doing commercials for the AFRS. The shows are generally in the 1957-58 range.

It made me wonder if there were any other sports announcers from other parts
of the country who did this kind of work for the AFRS.

For those who collect recordings of baseball games, this site now has box
scores for games beginning in 1957. I assume earlier games may be added. It's
fun to download the box scores and store them along with the game recordings.

As far as Suspense goes, now that I am listening to this particular era of
the show, it is pretty clear that it's on the decline. The early and mid-50s
shows, where the switch was made from Hollywood movie stars to reliable radio
stalwarts actually made the show improve (Elliot Lewis' presence seemed to
help). It was not up to par with its stronger 1947-1949 run, but it was
better than most shows on the air at the time. I find the loss of live music
to be more of a disappointment than I thought. While the music of Johnny
Dollar of that era was recorded, and rather repetitive, it was part of the
essence of the show. Suspense had story lines that could vary significantly
from week to week, and the music selections don't seem to adapt as well.

So it's kind of sad that I'm getting to the end of the run, and instead of
looking forward to the next one, it becomes a less of a diversion and more of
a drudgery.

The missing shows are still listed at
[removed]

I have had a few collectors write to me, but unfortunately, the shows they
thought were "missing" were incorrectly labeled. I'm always hoping for any of
these to show up.
