Subject: Affairs of Peter Salem discovery
The details of the discovery of that segment of the "Affairs of Peter
Salem" are set forth in the Lyon College "Greensheet", which is an
on-line newspaper. How Dr. Brooks Blevins stumbled upon the rare show
is quite interesting. Also interesting is the fact that he looks even
younger than Martin Grams, Jr.

Subject: Norman Corwin book
Someone earlier in the week asked about Norman Corwin's radio appearances.
I had mentioned that there was a book about Norman Corwin that featured a
nice biography and broadcast log for Corwin's radio credits. I appologize
for not recalling or finding the book but I just stumbled across it tonight.
The book (for the interested party) is
ON A NOTE OF TRIUMPH: NORMAN CORWIN AND THE GOLDEN YEARS OF RADIO
by R. Leroy Bannerman
Foreward by Erik Barnouw
The book is indeed out of print and may or may not be difficult to find.
Sorry I didn't have the exact title and author earlier in the week.

Subject: NICK CARTER 15-minute daily serial
In a message dated 11/21/03 7:14:18 PM, Tim Hughes writes:
Does anyone know where one can find very good sounding lo-gen Nick Carters
and Inner Sanctums? I'm especially looking for the '48-50 season (30 min.)
Nick Carters.
***Ahem. While we're at it, does anyone on the list have any episodes of
NICK CARTER in the daily serial format from 1944. They starred Lon Clark and
were scripted by David Kogan and Robert Arthur, often from plots by my late
friend Walter Gibson. Dave Goldin used to have most of them in excellent
sound:
"Kidnap for Sale" or "The Mystery of the Missing Babies" (4/17-4/27/44)
"Murder by Magic" or "The Mystery of the Vanishing Corpse (4/28-5/4/44)
"The House of Death" or "The Mystery of the Missing Grave" (5/7-5/16/44)
"The Eye Of Death" or "The Mystery Of The Talking Doll" (5/17-5/26/44)
"The Test Tube Murders" or "The Mystery Of The Suicide Killers" (5/30-6/9/44)
"The Accidental Bullet" or "The Mystery Of The Murdered Dog" (6/12-6/19/44)
"The Frightened Refugee" or "The Money Master's Millions" (6/20-7/3/44)
"Murder To Music" or "The Mystery Of The Note Of Death" (7/4-7/12/44)
"The Gate To Heaven" or "The Mystery Of The Chinese Gong" (7/16-7/27/44)
"The Castle Of Chaos" or "The Mystery Of The Forgetful Client" (7/30-8/8/44)
"The Picture Of Death" or "The Mystery Of The Painted Daisies" (8/9-8/18/44)
"The Twilight Terror" or "Nick Carter and The Valley Of Fear" (8/21-8/25/44)
"The Drums Of Death" or "The Mystery Of The Voodoo Killer" (8/27-9/1/44)
If anyone has any of them, please contact me offlist. --Anthony Tollin***

Subject: Early Illegal Station
Joe Mackey's "Those Were The Days" post about WBOE, the first
school-operated, 500 watt radio station in Cleveland, OH in 1938 prompts my
question. I distinctly remember reading about an illegal, 500 watt AM
station
run by students as an actual business in a small Midwest community, far away
from any metropolitan area where they could be monitored by FCC antennas.
It was not a clandestine station, they had actual studios in the downtown
area. The station's call letters were on the building in large letters, they
sold advertising to local merchants and were very popular with local news
and music programming. From all appearances, it was a licensed station
operating for years by the students who built it. This story was complete
with photos, including, I recall, a b/w picture of the building with the
call letters. It was an issue of a national magazine (maybe Time Magazine?)
in the late-1940's, early-1950's. The magazine story was about how they got
away with broadcasting illegally for a long time, and when they were finally
detected, the community wanted their only radio station to stay on the air
by petitioning the FCC to let them continue providing programming in the
small, Midwest agricultural town.
The article convinced me to build a phono oscillator station in my bedroom
and broadcast to my neighborhood, but after a few months on the air, in
Boston, I was detected and surrendered the home-made transmitter. I'd like
to hear from anyone on the list if they remember this, or a similar,
magazine article (or have a copy of it). Perhaps someone who also started
their own broadcasting station in their bedroom like I did. Thanks.
