Subject: CBS chirp and bong
In the digest, Chris was wondering what the CBS chirp and bong sounded
like. I found a couple of videos at YouTube that include them.
The "chirp" is in this mid-90s aircheck montage of New York radio stations
at 2:44, just after the Lenscrafters announcement.
[removed]
And this one, an aircheck of an excerpt of Captain Kangaroo, has the
"bong" just after the station ID at the very beginning of the video:

You'll probably recognize it after you hear them.

Subject: Jack Bivans
I had the opportunity and the joy of corresponding with
Jack Bivans fairly often over the last 2-3 years. For some reason he took a
liking to me, perhaps it was the Chicago roots. He was most giving of his
thoughts and memories
with a rich recall of Chicago radio in the 40's. He was kind enough to send
pictures taken by his son of various scenes and gave me a wonderful recap of
his radio career
from its earliest days. He helped me locate Ed Prentiss'
step-daughter and was always ready to add to my own memories of Chicago
radio series and personalities that I had remembered. He was a precious man.

Does anyone know the Shadow broadcast dates of ....
The first non-Bret Morrison broadcast with John Archer and the last one?
The first and last Stephen Courtleigh broadcast?
The date of the broadcast that Bret Morrison took it up (again) after
Courtleigh?
Thanks very much and regards to all

Subject: DONALD BUKA
I was saddened to read of Donald Buka's passing recently.
One of the delights performing at FOTR for me is working with the folks
who were actually there during that magical time in radio.
I had heard Donald in a few INNER SANCTUM shows years ago and recalled a
skillful voice.
Then I got to work with Donald few years ago and as we read across the
table at rehearsal his professionalism and ease were an inspiration to me and
others I'm sure.
Then on stage that night a new and deeper commitment to the character came
through not only in his voice but in the several looks we gave to each
other during the performance.
That eye-to-eye 'truth' that actor's cherish.
It is something I will always remember.
We said a warm goodbye in the lobby Sunday morning. His dog, I believe he
said a Chihuahua, was not well and he was eager to get back to his
apartment in New York.
A wave and a smile from the back seat.
He showed up in an old movie just last month and once again I saw in his
eyes a commitment to character that allowed all of us into the 'moment' he
created.
That my friends is what actors are all about.
That is what we aspire to.
So long buddy.
Thanks for taking the time to play with us.

Subject: Re: Fred Allen on TV
A few Digests ago, it was mentioned that there are copies of Gunsmoke radio
scripts on the [removed] tobacco site. But there are
also quite a few other scripts from Chesterfield-sponsored TV & radio shows
(Dragnet, Hope, Crosby, Martin & Lewis, et cetera), including a handful for
TV's "Sound Off Time" for which Fred Allen was one of the rotating hosts.
In one script, a dead body in a sketch about NBC mystery shows turns out to
be Dave Garroway. Fred says: "Dave, this is sure a surprise. Many a guest
star has turned out to be a stiff. But this is the first time a stiff has
turned out to be guest star." Garroway attempts to plug next week's premiere
of the Today show but keeps falling asleep. Fred wonders who will watch a TV
show at 7 in the morning, "milkmen and roosters?"
In another script, Fred comments: "Television is changing peoples'
appearances. From looking at the screen so much people's eyes are getting
bigger. Years ago, when a person had pop-eyes you knew he was either Eddie
Cantor or a thyroid condition."

Subject: More new stamps
A stamp collector friend of mine brought my attention to the new
series of stamps that the USPO just brought out. Each sheet features
20 "TV Early Memories" shows or characters. Most of them began on
radio, including The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, Lassie, Perry Mason, Ozzie
& Harriet, Burns & Allen, Dinah Shore, and Red Skelton.
Two TV shows are among the stamps which had spun off a radio version:
Howdy Doody and Hopalong Cassidy.
The official release date for this set was 14 August 09 so virtually
every post office in the country should have them for sale at their
counters now.

Well, not for braggadocio's sake, as my works are modest, but in service
of honestly adding to an interesting thread:
1. "Christ in Cinema" (which grew out of an NYU research paper) in THE
LUTHERAN magazine.
2. A series of dispatches-from-the-front type articles after 9/11 in my
hometown (Ohio) newspaper, THE DEFIANCE CRESCENT-NEWS.
3. An Intro commissioned by Jim Harmon for one of his IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN
collections - alas, cut for space and awaiting a new home. "The Reports of
the Death of the Theater of the Imagination have been Greatly

came to be
a fan of same, as well as a producer of Contemporary Audio Drama.
4. In the Dramatic Writing field, a plethora of original scripts as well
as adaptations, for stage, screen, and radio, ever since my High School
days. Including several dramatizations of classic short stories (by [removed]
Wodehouse, Stephen Vincent Benet, and O. Henry) for OpenHouseNY; of novels
and
plays (by Mary Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, and William
Shakespeare) for Quicksilver Radio Theater; and the National Audio Theater
"Best Script" award-winner, "Good Friday, 1865 - Lincoln's Last Day", that
was
just revived at Galapagos Art Space.
I find writing excruciating, but exhilarating (he says as he sits in the
sweltering NYC heat, tweaking two scripts for the upcoming [removed])
God willing, more to come.

Subject: The Eternal Light
The Eternal Light radio series on NBC ran until 1968. I first heard about it
when I saw the television series with the same name--I believe on Sunday late
morning or early afternoon.
It has some great shows--including one (I think it is called "The Jukebox and
the Synagogue") in 1947 that shows how a local gang and Jewish youth group
overcome mistrust and agree to work together.
One thought: I'm wondering if it would be valuable--and fun--for those of us
on the list to describe not only our favorite OTR shows, but also some of our
favorite individual programs on that show (including date of show, name, and a
brief summary) and why we think it is special. This might help those of us who
are less familiar with OTR get a better feel for what is special and why.
Also, would it be worthwhile on this site to compare different programs in a
specific genre--such as OTR detectives, OTR classical music, OTR theatre,
