ADMINISTRIVIA:
Last issue, for the first time in the years I've operated
the OTR Digest, a spam email got through. I'd love to tell you
it's because they got smarter, but the fault was _entirely_ mine;
in changing a ruleset to more efficiently remove spam (the list
receives hundreds of spam emails evey week), I accidentally broke
the filter completely.
The error has been corrected, and the incident should _not_ be
repeated. My embarassed apologies for allowing that nonsense into
the OTR Digest; even inadvertantly, it is still inexcusable.
Some of you did not receive the issue because of various anti-spam
filters, and justifiably so. I have removed the offending message
from the issue in the archives, so any requested issue #231 should
properly be delivered.
Again, my apologies for the inconvenience, and the error. --cfs3

Subject: Radio Announcers or DJ's on Record
I was thinking last night about Radio Announcers that had recording careers. I
figured the guys (and gals) on the OTR Digest may have some suggestions.
I have a gray area CD titled, The Dee Jays which feature commerical record
releases by Dick Clark, Wolfman Jack, and others. But of OTR interest I can
only
think of Frank Gallop's Ballad Of Irving, Tex Ritter (if you consider him an
announcer) - Deck Of Cards, and Arthur Godfrey's Too Fat Polka.
There must be others.

Does anyone know if the old time radio New York actor Leon Janney is related
to the current West Wing actress Allison Janney.

There was an article in the northern New Jersey newwspaper "The Record"
(invariably called "The Bergen Record" and "The Hackensack Record")
today (31) in which Fort Lee residents professional comedians Dick Capri
and Bobby Ramsen weigh in on the new film "The Aristocrats>" Bobby was
a child actor on radio in "Let's Pretend," "Congressional Medal of Honor,"
"Dick Tracy," and other shows. He's been a professional comedian for over 50
years now, & was a regular performer in the stock company on TV's "The Bob
Newhart Show." Mr. Ramsen has also been a recent guest at FOTR conven-
tions. Said article goes on to say how Bobby first heard the objectionable
joke
at the center of "The Aristocrats" from fellow comic and friend Will Jordan
in the 1950s. Jordan has also attende many an FOTR.
Unfortunately, this article has yet to be posted on the Record's website,
which is [removed]
Q: Did you hear about the new Charlie Summers doll?
A: You wind it up and it tells you how making up and posting jokes about
wind-up dolls is "way off-topic!"
[I'm just kidding, Charlie. We all value the job you do maintaing and
publishing this OTR Digest. Bravo, Fearless Leader!]
Yoiurs always in the ether!

....words from an old NBC paige who was in the NBC studio/Sunset and Vine
when Ralph Edwards introduced Bob Barker as the new host of T or C. Edwards
alerted us to be nice to Barker as he was a little nervous. When Bob Barker
came out and was introduced he was great and was like an old friend to the
studio audience.

Mini biography
Born in Seattle, Frances Farmer studied drama at the University of
Washington, Seattle. In 1935, she went to Hollywood where she secured a
seven-year contract with Paramount. In 1943, she was wrongfully declared
'mentally incompetent' and committed to a series of asylums and public
mental hospitals, where eventually she received a lobotomy. After eleven
years she was released, and spent some of the remaining years of her life
tending the parents who had committed her and taking odd jobs. She appeared
on <[removed];"This Is Your Life" (1952), and
ran her own TV show, <[removed];"Frances Farmer
Presents" (1958) for six years. She died of cancer in 1970.

Tonight the cable network TRIO is starting to rebroadcast the 12-part 1981
British TV series BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, which features actor Simon Jones in
the role of "Bridey". Simon is, of course, best known to this crowd as the
star of the radio series THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, in which he
played the part of "Arthur Dent". He later repeated the same role of the TV
series of HITCHHIKER'S, and most recently returned to the part again in 14
new episodes of the radio series which were broadcast on the BBC during the
past year.
I am very excited to be able to let you know that Simon Jones will be one of
our very special guests at this year's Friends of Old-Time Radio Convention,
October 20-23, at the Holiday Inn North at the Newark NJ Airport. On Friday
I'll be hosting a one-on-one conversation with Simon in which we'll talk
about his long career on radio, TV, movies, and the stage; his experiences
working with such stars as Claudette Colbert and Lauren Bacall; and, of
course, Douglas Adams and THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. Then on
Saturday he'll be performing the lead role in two OTR recreations, episodes
of FRONTIER GENTLEMAN and THE HALLS OF IVY.
I hope you can join us in Newark this year for the 30th Annual Friends of
Old-Time Radio Convention. To find out more, you can check out:
