Subject: Lucille Ball's 100th Birthday
Saturday, August 6th, 2011, marks Lucille Ball's 100th birthday, and I'm
going to be in Jamestown, NY (Lucy's birthplace) directing two live radio
shows at 3:30pm on the stage of the 1,300 seat Reg Lenna Civic Center, for
delayed broadcast that evening around 8pm Eastern time on Sirius XM Satellite
Radio (on the Radio Classics Channel - Channel 82). One of the shows will be
a re-creation of an episode of Lucy's radio sitcom, "My Favorite Husband."
The other will be the "world premiere" of my own new radio play, "I Love
Lucy: The Untold Story"-- a humorous look behind the scenes at the many
obstacles that had to be overcome in order to get "I Love Lucy" on the air in
1951. (The play's "out of town tryout" was last month in Bellevue Washington,
at the REPS Radio Showcase). The cast will include Michael C. Gwynne, Stuffy
Singer, fellow FOTR director Gary Yoggy, and a number of excellent standup
comedian/actors who will be in town for that week's "Lucy Fest" comedy
festival. It should be a lot of fun. Details on the radio event (and the rest
of the weekend's festivities) can be found at [removed]

Subject: Norman Corwin on YesterdayUSA Sunday
Back on May 14, I met Norman Corwin in person for the first time, talked
with him for a bit, and did a presentation about his career for the
Association for Recorded Sound Collections conference in Los Angeles.
On this Sunday night on [removed] we will be playing my tribute
to Norman and the all-star re-creation of "The Undecided Molecule"
presented that day. The recordings will be featured on Walden Hughes'
live show which begins at 10:30 pm Eastern. There are some pictures up
on my facebook page, and we hope to get up some short video clips of the
rehearsal.
Last year when I learned that ARSC was meeting in LA, I immediately
called my YesterdayUSA partner Walden Hughes and asked him if he could
get Norman for us like he ad just helped with for REPS. "I think so,"
he replied, and a few weeks later came the confirmation from Michael
Kasey with plans to do an all-star Corwin re-creation following the
round-table the three of us hoped to do with Norman. Alas, this year
has been rough for Norman who just turned 101, especially with the death
of his older brother Emile at 107. His voice has become very weak and
he prefers to speak one-to-one rather than to a public audience, but
Michael assure us that Norman was REALLY looking forward to this, and
the preparations of "The Undecided Molecule" re-creation kept him going
these months after Emile's death. (Coincidentally, the prospect of this
presentation kept ME going during my recovery from complications after
an operation in late January which put me on life-support for three
days. I was determined to be able to stand and walk and get to the
conference in [removed] And I did.)
A few weeks before the conference, Michael Kasey called me and told me
that our planned interview round-table would not be able to have Norman
speaking. I knew that our group of archivists, librarians, and record
collectors were quite different from the OTR groups Norman was known to,
and that he would need an introduction to our group, I fleshed out my
question outline into an introduction to Norman's OTR career complete
with a dozen sound excerpts that included some past discussions I had
had with Norman on YesterdayUSA. I discussed why I prefer the uplifting
patriotism of "We Hold These Truths" over the seeming belligerence of
"On A Note Of Triumph." I read from a letter he had written about "On A
Note Of Triumph" where he also had expressed his concerns, and I matched
his discussion with an excerpt.
Shortly after 9/11/2001 I had discussed with Norman my long-held feeling
about the glory of the Bill of Rights he had written about having been
violated within months by the interment of the Japanese -- including
American citizens. "Ironic," he had said, and then went on to discuss
the 2001 parallel where any Muslim-looking person was being viewed with
suspicion. This was before Gitmo, Abu Gareb, and interment of
indefinite length -- and I know that if we did this as a live interview
he would have wanted to discuss these other compromises to The Bill Of
Rights, and how much these images differed from the thoughtful
"conqueror" (played by soft-spoken Elliott Lewis) he presented in "On A
Note of Triumph". I had hoped that Norman would approve of the
political discussions I was able to include, and was gratified afterward
when he told me he appreciated what I had said.
To document his pre-CBS career I played an excerpt of his poetry reading
from a rare Columbia album he did for their Educational Series because I
had been unable to find a recording of his WQXR series "Poetic
License". I had looked all over and asked everyone -- but not so.
Right after, my friend Andy Lanset, WNYC/WQXR archivist, came up to me
and said "Gee, Mike, I wish I had known you were looking for "Poetic
License" because we finally were able to negotiate for one last month."
And sure enough, it is there for everyone to hear on their website.
[removed]
A couple of other things. Norman told me that Jimmy Stewart was NOT supposed
to chuckle at the Don't Walk/Walk line early in "We Hold These Truths". He
than started to say that this now made it TWO mistakes in the program. EVERY
time this program is discussed he always brought up the other mistake, and I
told him that he has to stop hearing only the mistake because it is a GREAT
program! (I'll discuss the other mistake another time.) He also confirmed
that yes, he was surprised when Groucho cracked up Keenan Wynn at the closing
credits of the original broadcast of "The Undecided Molecule", yes, he was
annoyed that it happened, and no, he does not remember a crack-up like that
on any of his other programs. (If you haven't heard this, listen to it, it
is a blooper par excellence.)
The re-creation of "The Undecided Molecule" was wonderful. The ARSC group
was enthralled -- while we are accustomed to these at our OTR conventions,
they've never had anything like this performed at ARSC. My friends who were
running the convention were genuinely worried that this couldn't be done, but
I had to reassure them that the OTR people do these things all the time, and
we can easily pull this off. Michael Kasey was a wonderful director -- he's
had a good teacher -- and the sound effects and music integration were
flawless. Norman Lloyd didn't look or sound a day over 60, although he is
95. Janet Waldo was fetching in a red minidress and white boots. Phil
Proctor was decked out in a white judge's wig. A geat time was had by all,
and we'll be describing it during the YesterdayUSA program on Sunday.

Subject: Super Man Radio Spoof
While spending the morning with the nieces and nephews, I caught an old time
radio reference in the children's cartoon, MAX AND RUBY. In the episode
"Super Max to the Rescue," two bunnies trying to create their own play circus
(using stuffed animals) find their efforts thwarted by Max, dressed up like
Superman, trying to save people from the giant elephant. Max is inspired to
save the day because he spent a few minutes in the livingroom, by an
old-style radio, listening to THE ADVENTURES OF SUPER BUNNY. No television
here, just the radio. Clearly a direct old-time radio reference. And it seems
Max has done this more than once on the show -- there's even a children's
book featuring a similar story, SUPER BUNNY TALES (Max and Ruby).
