Subject: YTJD Serial vs. Half-Hour Shows

Wayne Johnson asked about the rationale behind switching the Johnny Dollar
15-minute serials back to a 30-minute weekly feature. I'm honestly not sure
why CBS decided to make that move. Come to think of it, I'm not sure why
Jack Johnstone and company decided to debut Bob Bailey in his serial
adventures in the first place. The only other contemporary I can think of
who followed the same idea was Mr. Keen: Tracer of Lost Persons. That was
once a half-hour program that went to a daily serial format in the mid '50's
as well.

It might be that Johnstone saw the potential for better storytelling through
the serial scripts since he was at the center of the program. He would be
involved in the genesis of the story from beginning to end and would be able
to appreciate the deeper complexities of the story. Yet, from the fan's
perspective, it may be that people got tired of having to tune in every day
for a 15-minute story. Much like many of the television serials popular
today, the audience would miss key elements of the puzzle if they happened
to miss a chapter. This might have lead to frustrations from the audience
that resulted in the switch.

Today, fans such as myself appreciate the superiority of the Bailey serials
because they are in deed better stories, but we're getting the entire
picture in one setting. When I listen to "The Molly Kay Matter," I don't
have to wait 24 hours before hearing the next segment; I can be done with
the show in about an hour. Many television fans today prefer not to tune in
each work, but would rather devour programs like 24, Lost and Prison Break
in their DVD seasonal compilation formats. I think it's really the same
concept at work; the audience wants resolution to the story sooner than
later.
Ironically, the half-hour Bob Bailey shows weren't really a half-hour. IN
late 1956 when the show reverted back to 30 minutes, it was plagued with
network commercials that caused the story to be trimmed to about 20 or 21
minutes in total. So the audience went from about 75 minutes of story per
week to about 21. It's why I collect the serials and stop there.

Affiliate clearance issue perhaps? Quality of programming wasn't always the
determining factor in those days any more than it is now.

How much of the coverage is available from ABC radio NBC Radio And MBs?
Many Thanks

Jim Taylor

There are some recordings from NBC and Mutual radio however, you are
correct the majority of recordings are from CBS radio.

Most of the weekend is available from CBS radio. However, there are many
hours of NBC and ABC radio available. They were on the WBAP recordings that
were uncovered a few years ago. At that time WBAP switched back and forth
between NBC and ABC (and requencies) throughout their broadcast day.

The Fred Foy piece that you mentioned was released to ABC stations as a
double record set that covers highlights of the weekend.

Finally, there are a few hours of Mutual radio but, it is the least
available of all the networks.

All of these recordings are in circulation,

Hello.

I have been attending the annual FOTR convention since the Meriden, CT days in
the mid seventies. I particularly enjoy the re-creations, although the number
of actors, announcers, musicians and sound people who actually worked in
network broadcast radio is fast diminishing (those who still attend are in
their seventies and eighties), the convention never
ceases to entertain and enlighten.

After her interview with Morley Safer on "60 Minutes" in 1976, pressure
on the government began to mount for a pardon for Iva. On his last day
in office in January 1977, President Gerald Ford granted her a full

For those of you who have been wanting to hear our Don't Touch that Dial
old-time radio program on KPFK but couldn't stay up until 3 am, you can now
listen to it anytime you wish, for 60 days following the broadcast. Here's
how:

a. Go to [removed]

b. Click on 'audio archives' in left menu

c. Click on Something's Happening for the date you want to hear (Monday
midnight is actually Tuesday AM, October 3.). It will be divided into part A
and part B. Don't Touch that Dial is part A. For this most recent show part
A was divided into two parts, with about nine minutes missing from Inner
Sanctum Mysteries in between. Hopefully this glitch will be worked out by
next month's show. Part B contains radiio shows with Humphrey Bogart which
were played by Roy of Hollywood.

Just a few comments about radio coverage of the J F K
assassination. In November 1963, the four radio networks ran
respectable news operations. Today the networks treat radio as a
step child.

At the time, news coverage was how the radio networks defined
themselves. The last old-time radio dramas had come to an end on CBS
just a couple of years ago, and news was what the networks had left.

Mary Orr, who wrote the original story that became the movie "All About

mentions that "In 1949 a radio dramatization of the story, written by
Ms. Orr and broadcast on NBC, caught Hollywood's attention." Is this
refering to the 1/24/49 Radio City Playhouse broadcast titled "The
wisdom of Eve"? That's the only show in my collection that looks like a
likely candidate. I haven't listened to this one yet but I guess I
might queue it up.
