Subject: IS IT TRUE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT (AL) JOLSON?
In his time few people would challenge Jolson's title as The
Worlds Greatest Entertainer. Fewer still, who knew the man,
would take issue with his reputation as a mean spirited egotistical
tight fisted SOB.
Having read much about Jolson and being an admirer of his vocal
renditions I admit to being more than a little surprised to have come
upon the audio of a four to five minute private (home) recording made
some time in the mid 1930's when Ruby Keeler, Jolson's third wife,
was hospitalized (for reasons not known to me).
The voice on the recording is unquestionably that of Al Jolson
. He begins (as though he were leaving a message on her answering
machine) by telling her how much he loves her. Proceeds to mention
the calls he made to the hospital, being told that she was sleeping.
At about this point, his remarks become more and more offensive.
He talks about his plans for her that do not involve her in
show business. She is to be a stay at home wife and meet his every
need. She is to ignore affairs he may be rumored to have had with
other women. His warning that she should expect him to give her a
dose of corporal punishment (in my view, goes over the top even for
folks who may excuse his verbal abuse disguised as a GET WELL DARLING
[removed] just Jolson trying to be funny funny. In the
words of a famous otr wife: IT AINT FUNNY MCGEE.
If any reader has knowledge of the origin (history) of the
recording I would appreciate hearing from you.

Subject: WGN To Air Nine Hours of OTR on Christmas
The Golden Age of Radio is getting a holiday comeback from WGN Television in
Chicago, which recently announced a nine-hour slate of Yule Log programming,
including Jack Benny, Gildersleeve, Fibber McGee & Molly, Burns & Allen, It's
a Wonderful Life and more. The shows will air behind video of a burning log.
While it is unlikely too many list members won't have heard the programs
selected, it's nice to know someone still sees value in putting them on the
air. Chicago-based Radio Spirits is providing the programming.
Here's an announcement from Multichannel News -

Subject: Don Hollenbeck
Folks;
Received this request from a friend, and would appreciate replies directly
to me off-list and I will happily summarize (any information and audio
supplied will be shared with the entire class via the blog, I promise). I'm
personally interested in hearing his NBC report from the beaches of Salerno,
but any and all audio of Mr. Hollenbeck and any Marlin commercials would be
greatly appreciated.

I'm interviewing Loren Ghiglione who's written a biography of CBS reporter
Don Hollenbeck, a man best known for killing himself while under the pressure
of much red-baiting by Hearst columnist Jack O'Brien. Before going to work
for Murrow, Hollenbeck had been fired by both NBC and ABC. ABC fired him
because he called the Marlin razor blade commercial an "atrocity," on-air.
It was one of those silly jingles of the early 1950's that promised you'd get
women if you used the product.
Do you have any audio of a Marlin commercial? Do you have audio of
Hollenbeck?

Subject: MORE Suspense recycling
Thank you Martin and Randy for your
help and insights.
Randy's linkages sent me over to
RadioGoldindex to search for "Roeburt" who penned the Inner
Sanctum and the Suspense scripts that were reused. This is the only
one in that data base that does not match up:
Suspense. May 20, 1962. CBS net.
"Dagger Of The Mind". Sponsored by: Marlboro Cigarettes. A
woman who is going mad decides that her husband is unfaithful and is
lying to her. Claire Niesen, Leon Janney, Ralph Camargo, Evie Juster,
Guy Repp, John Roeburt (writer), Stuart Metz (announcer), Bruno
Zirato Jr. (producer, director), Ethel Huber (music supervisor)
Any idea which Inner Sanctum this one
probably is?
My newly updated list is still at
[removed]
As best I can determine the only two
Inner Sanctums that are circulating that were re-done on Suspense
are:
5/7/46 You Could Die Laughing
5/28/51 Unforgiving Corpse
The missing ones are
07/12/48 Death Is a Magician
05/02/49 Deadly Double
12/18/50 Murder by Consent
12/26/49, 12/25/50 The Enchanted Ghost
Does anyone have any of these?
Regards and sincerest thanks [removed]

Subject: Golden Age of Radio shows
Just a further encouragement to newer list members to accept Bob
Scherago's invitation to listen to the old WTIC "Golden Age of
Radio" shows of the 1970s.
The program itself was a pioneer in OTR reminiscence. There may
be a number of misstatements along the way, but there simply
wasn't the in-depth research then that today's hosts have to fall
back on, thanks to the efforts of many members of this list.
Also, you'll find the memories of the personalities a little
askew in some cases, but overall it was a great program with lots
to choose from, depending on your particular interest. I'm
particularly fond of the interview with Robert Anderson and his
comments on writing for radio.
