It was a nice segment ... unlike the previous hatchet job they
did on Amos 'n' Andy.

Subject: PhD dissertations on old-time radio
A number of Masters theses & PhD dissertations have been written about radio
shows and radio writers. In my research for WORDS AT WAR (Scarecrow Press),
my book about World War II radio drama, I used one written about Lux Radio
Theatre and there were several about Arch Oboler and Norman Corwin. I'd be
interested and I think other subscribers here would be too if any librarian
who subscribes would be interested in listing some of the other theses and
dissertations dealing with OTR.

Some Digesters have brought to our attention the recent "History
Detectives" TV segment involving a 1932-33 radio program. OTR
historian Elizabeth McLeod is featured prominently and even though
she makes it clear the series was called "The Lucky Strike Hour,"
PBS, with typical disinterest, keeps calling the show "Special Agent
Five."
As background on this matter, both myself and Martin Grams, Jr, were
questioned months ago by the History Detectives producers in a series
of emails to confirm this script as authentic and determine the
history of the program. (It was easy for me, as I'd seen the script
in the FBI archives when I was assigned to FBIHQ.) In addition to
explaining the series, giving them a list of all the shows that
season (15 of which were based on FBI cases, and one each by Border
Patrol, Narcotics Bureau, and Postal Inspectors) I provided them with
the complete background on George Zimmer, who wrote and produced this
series for the American Tobacco Company. As most OTR fans know, he
would later produce some dreadful syndicated series, including "The
Return of K-7."
Between Martin and myself, "History Detectives" pretty much got what
they needed. So when it was time to start shooting the contrived
interviews that make up the show, they asked me about my
availability. I told them as a union member of both SAG and AFTRA, I
would have to be paid scale. "Ohhhh" they shuddered,"We never pay
annnnnybody." That was the last I heard from them.
So they video-taped Elizabeth, who as usual was excellent, and some
current (and non-union) FBI employees to finish off their interview
requirements.

Unfortunately I can't remember the exact show, but I did hear a Skelton show
where he made a joke about network Vice Presidents (as did Allen) and he was
cut off. Paraphrasing here, he said afterward:
"Now I've joined the Parade of Stars."
