Hi Gang:
Today's NY Daily News (10) has a review of a new TV documentray called "TV in
Black:
Race and TV in the Early Years"premiering tonight at 8 PM/Eastern over
superstation
WGN-TV. This write-up
[removed]
by the News's TV critic David Bianculli makes mention that a good portion of
this special
is dedicated to the TV version of "Amos 'n' Andy," and goes on to say that it
reveals little-
known nuggets of trivia about it such as " (One stunner here is that musician
Billy
Preston's mother played Sapphire in a touring stage production of "Amos 'n'
Andy"
after the TV show was canceled.)"
I know this has come up before a couple of years ago. Once when the ether got
the better of me, I mistakenly stated here that Ernestine "Sapphire Stevens"
Wade
was the mother of singer/musician/one time "fith Beatle" Billy Preston after
having
had read this in the book "The Book of Rock Lists," co-written by Dave Marsh.
Elizabeth McLeod came along to correct me by stating that Billy Preston was
once
quoted as having once said "my mother was Sapphire," meaning his mother was
evocative of Ms. Wade's portrayal of Sapphire, and that this got turned around
over the years to the point where folks actually believed that Preston's mom
was THE
Sapphire.
And now, according to this new TV docu, Preston's mother, who isn't Ernestine
Wade, was somehow otherwise connected to the "A 'n' A" franchise. I never
heard of this 1950s touring version of the show. Does anybody have any
additional
information? Were Messrs. Moore, Childress, Williams, and Stewart involved?
BTW, the photo accompanying Mr. Bianculli's article transposes the identities
of Tim "Kingfish" Moore" and Spencer "Andy" Williams, Jr.
Holy mackerel!

For those in the Metropolitan Washington DC area, there is an antique show
this weekend at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg,

hi all --
Further to the memories of George Herman, the recent (wonderful) book
"Face The Nation" by (the wonderful) Bob Schieffer comes with a
companion DVD of some of the show's notable moments over the years. At
a few points during the DVD you get to see and hear George Herman.
Don't know how much of his radio work is preserved, but Mr. Herman has
at least been digitally immortalized somehow.

Subject: Twenty Questions
I recently heard an episode of the game show Twenty Questions and found it
immensely enjoyable. Hunting around for MP3s of the show, I found a few
complete shows and a few fragments. The fragments seemed to have been
tinkered with, in that most of them have the show's opening and then a single
round of questioning that obviously didn't follow the opening. Also, two of
the fragments sound like they might have been from the same show, making
me wonder if there's another whole show floating around that I haven't
located yet.
Can anyone give me a rundown on how many complete shows exist and, perhaps,
if there is a good place to look for un-messed-with show fragments
(assuming there are any)?
Thanks for the help!

Kenneth Clarke asks;
I have a couple of questions about Mercedes
McCambridge. Is she the same actress who performed
opposite Joan Crawford in the movie "Johnny Guitar"?
You betcha. And here comes a bunch of trivia about the
film "Johnny Guitar". And it's definitely OTR related.
Firstly, the film was shot right here where I live in
Sedona, Arizona. Since I was in OTR, that makes it related, right?
Two, and right on the OTR target, the film also featured my good
friend and acting buddy, Ben Cooper. He played the young wannabe
Gun fighter. I think that was the first western film he made, shortly
after he and Skip Homeier left New York, (drove westward together)
to seek fame and fortune in La La Land . Which, as you know, they
both succeeded in doing. For those of you who may not be aware, Ben
appeared on thousands of Radio programs in NY, prior to moving out West.
About a month ago, they had a Western Film festival of sorts here in town.
They honored a few of the film personalities that had appeared in films
that were made in Sedona. "Johnny Guitar" was paramount. So I got to kibbitz
again with Ben Cooper, as well as Ernest Borgnine who played one of the bad
guys in that film.
Finally, in passing, I worked with Mercedes once on a radio program out of
NY, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one. I was just a young
sprout. Nice lady, and great dramatic actress.

Kenneth Clark asked two questions.
Someone told me recently that there was more
than one actor who played the role of Jughead Jones
on the "Archie Andrews" show on OTR. Is this true?
In a [removed] But with an asterisk.
I always thought that Harlan "Hal" Stone was the one
who was credited with this performance. Just to be
sure, I asked what the actors name was. I was told
it was Cameron Smith. Is this true?
[removed] name is wrong. (see what happens when you listen to others?) :)
His last name was Andrews, not Smith.
I just want to get all my facts straight.
If you want the straight scoop, see pages 168/169 of my book, "[removed]
Archie! Re-laxx!"
The few copies still available can be ordered on the website
[removed] (Forgive the plug) :)
But here's an abbreviated version of the straight scoop.
The program originally aired on WOR in [removed] (I recall someone telling
me it was a 15 minute daily format) I was about 11 or 12 at the time so
I know nada about that. I never listened to it. Jack Grimes played "Archie"
and the aforementioned Cameron Andrews played "Jughead" on this early WOR
version.
When NBC obtained the rights, (stole it from WOR???) they made it into a
weekly half hour series to be broadcast nationally. They held open auditions to
fill the parts of all the principal comic book characters, (a veritable teenage
actor cattle call) and after that whittling down process, I was selected to
play
the original NBC "Jughead". The "original" NBC "Archie was Charlie Mullen, who,
about a year later, was drafted (at the end of WWII) and replaced by the then
recently discharged returning Air Force veteran, Bob Hastings. (A B-29
Navigator).
My book goes into lots of detail about the casting process, and members of
the cast. Plus lots and lots of pictures and illustrations. But the book is not
just about the Archie [removed]'s basically the story of what it was like
for a
kid growing up in Show Biz, and covers my theatre experiences as well as all my
other OTR activities.
So technically (here's where the asterisk comes in) I was the "original"
Jughead on the NBC Network, and to my knowledge, the voice on all the tapes
of the program that exist that the OTR "Archie" fans collect.
HOWEVER!!!! One other character played the part of "Jughead" on NBC during
an approximately one year period when I was overseas serving in the Air Force
(during the Korean War). The early part of my enlistment was stateside (East
Coast), and I was still able to do the show on Saturdays. The name of the
individual that substituted for me was the zany Arnold Stang. Following my
discharge, I resumed playing 'Jughead' again until the program went off the
air.
Now you [removed]"The rest of the story".
In a separate posting, Kenneth asked.
What was the real name of the character
known as Jughead Jones on the "Archie Andrews"
program on OTR.
Is that a trick question? It was Forsyth P. Jones. But you can call me
"Jughead. :)
Hal(Harlan)Stone
"Jughead" (Do I need to qualify it and say NBC's Jughead? :)

"Is Mercedes McCambridge the same actress who performed opposite Joan

crime programs listed in Jim French's book, "Private Eyelashes" (and)
she was a district attorney in it."
a) Yes, she was in that 1954 kinky western with Crawford. Mercedes
made a lot of films, even gaining an Oscar for her debut fiim, "All the
King's Men" in 1949. But she continued on radio despite her movie
successes.
b) In what is the 89th documented occasion, Jim French and I have been
mixed up. Although Jim is a more skilled and prolific writer than I,
"Private Eyelashes; Radio's Lady Detectives" is my work. And in chapter
2, readers will learn that Mercedes' crime fighting show, in which she
played, not a district attorney, but a lawyer specializing in criminal
defense work, began in 1951. NBC titled it "The Defense Rests" but it
quickly moved to ABC under a new title, "Defense Attorney" where it ran
until December 1952.

Subject: Family Connections
I realize that this may be tantamount to 'beating
a dead horse', but I've recently been asked about some
(dubious, at best) familial connections regarding OTR
programs. Recently we discussed the Lone Ranger/Green
Hornet family tree. Someone once asked me if the Lois
Lane character from "Superman" had any family connection
to Margot Lane from "The Shadow". (I seriously doubt it.)
It got me to thinking though. Wasn't there a program
called "Nick Carter, Master Detective"? And wasn't there
a character named Chick Carter who was related to him
somehow? I believe Nick's father's name was even mentioned
on one of the programs. Does anyone have any further
info on this family bloodline? Didn't Chick Carter have
his own show on OTR as well? Please clarify.

For movie fans, I recommend these books highly. Each volume gives a
