 From Those Were The Days

4/12

1932 The thrill comedy, Joe Palooka, which would also be a popular
comic strip, made its debut on CBS.

1935 - "Your Hit Parade" premiered.

4/17

1933 Backed by the On the Trail portion of the magnificent Grand
Canyon Suite, Johnny Roventini, pillbox hat and all, uttered the words
"Call for Philip Morris" for the first time on radio. The famous phrase
was said in perfect B flat pitch and tone to perfectly match the
accompanying music. This "Call for Philip Morris" phrase became one of
the most famous in all of advertising.

1935 People gathered around to listen for the first time to what would
become the ultimate horror show on NBC, Lights Out.

Subject: cassettes in Cincy

If anyone is interested in cassettes, I'll have a box available at my table
at the Cincinnati convention, mostly titles that I've recently replaced or
will be replacing soon, like Quiet Please, Lights Out, Gunsmoke, etc. Most I
taped from my club library, but some are from dealers like Radio Memories and
Hello Again Radio. I'll also have some Raio Spirits box sets. All will be
priced to move.

Hope this is of interest to some!

Subject: AAT ?

The current issue of The New Yorker magazine has an article about
the great African-American contralto Marian Anderson. Exactly seventy
years ago she was denied permission by the Daughters of the American
Revolution to perform at their Constitution Hall and in reaction
President Roosevelt invited her to present a recital on the steps of the
Lincoln Memorial.
A photo with the article shows Anderson with Lincoln's statue in
the background and a battery of microphones in front of her. Her
performance was carried live by NBC.
Off to one side in the photo is what appears to be an RCA Model 44
microphone (not the best choice for an outdoor pickup) bearing a mic
flag reading "AAT". Does anyone know what AAT was?
I know that there was a radio station in New Jersey called WAAT but
I don't think they were involved.

Subject: Finding "Private Eyelashes"

Michael Ogden is right on the mark in pointing out that the librarian
of Linda Thuringer mislead her in saying no library had a copy of
"Private Eyelashes." At the present time, 31 libraries scattered
around CA. FL, MN, VA, TX, CO, NJ, WI, NY, etc. have a copy of this
book on their shelves. While some may classify it as a reference book
(John Dunning's "OTR Encyclopedia" almost always is) and therefore
not accessible under the Inter Library Loan program, most will not
have "Private Eyelashes" in that category.

I won't presume to speak for all OTR authors and publishers, but I
would suggest:

1) If you only want to read the book once, borrow it from a pal, an
OTR club, or from your local library. If your library doesn't have
it, first request that they purchase a copy. Sometimes libraries are
more inclined to purchase books that have won an award, so in the
case of "Private Eyelashes" you can mention the Agatha Award for Best
Non-Fiction. If the library cannot afford it (this happens) request
that they order it for you though the Inter Library Loan program. As
Michael points out, you can arm yourself with the list of libraries
who have the book you want by searching OCLC/WorldCat. There's
another site called "First Search" which has similar data on all [removed]
libraries.

2) If you want a copy of the book to put on your shelf for continued
reading (or loaning to friends) there are multiple sources. Of
course, my publisher, Bear Manor Media, would prefer you go to their
web site and buy any books of your choice. But within a year or so of
publication ("Private Eyelashes was released in April 2004) both new
and used copies of OTR books find their way to Internet dealers.
Larry Jordan suggests <[removed]> and that is one of many sites who
would have it. At present, [removed] lists nine different dealers
who are selling "Private Eyelashes" (6 used and 3 new) plus the
Edward R. Hamilton internet firm has new copies of my book, as well
as some of Martin Grams, Jr. and Ben Ohmart, at reduced prices.

3) Once you've bought a copy, take it to the next OTR convention and
the author will autograph it for you. We're delighted to do that,
regardless of where you purchased our book. If you don't run into us
at a convention or similar event, most of us will accept the book by
mail, autograph it, and mail it back (assuming you pay postage both
ways.) You can email us for an USPO address since most of us are on
the Digest regularly.

Happy reading to you [removed]
