Several listmembers have mentioned William Joyce,
the wartime propagandist.
A blogger has a good article on Joyce at http:

be on the first page.

George Wagner considers the trial and execution of William Joyce by
the British to be "at best extralegal" since this radio traitor was a
[removed] citizen who was born in Boston. (Actually he was born in
Brooklyn, NY, but the [removed] birth citizenship still existed.)
Since his place of birth was not in question, Joyce then thought the
same way as Wagner does now; Joyce was convinced he could not be
convicted for treason in Great Britain. But alas, both were [removed]
Joyce was born in 1906 to Irish immigrants in the [removed], who had
become naturalized citizens. But the family moved permanently back to
Ireland when Joyce was a mere youngster and he never set foot in the
[removed] again. By age 30, he was a Hitler worshipper and street
organizer in London. Eventually he jumped to Germany in 1939 to
become a radio mouthpiece for the Nazis in Berlin. Soon the street-
brawler from London was the microphone hero of Berlin and Germany
awarded him the War Merit Cross.
After the war, he was rounded up and brought back to England to face
trial for treason in September 1945. In British law, anyone who
invokes the protection of the Crown (as Joyce did when he obtained a
British passport) owes allegiance to the Crown and therefore his
American birth could not save him. Not from the trial (found guilty
after three days) nor from hanging (the noose snuffed out his life in
January 1946 after months of appeals.)

Subject: H. Copland Robinson Jr.
My friend Cope Robinson, whom I never met in person but got to know through
his sporadic posts on this forum, passed away in Chapel Hill, N. C. on
February 19. Cope, who had helped me with his observations as I prepared
several books, was a valuable contributor to OTR preservation. I tried to
reach him several times without success recently for help with a new
project. To my disappointment, his obituary is on the Internet.
As VP-marketing and advertising for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, he was
"there every day" in the studio when Arthur Godfrey Time was broadcast in
the 1940s and 1950s. From his years of association with those performers I
gained many insights never possible elsewhere, and some of them I shared
with readers. I remember fondly a very intense project on which we worked
together on the life of Robert Q. Lewis. His memory of those days seemed as
clear as a bell and he answered numerous requests thoroughly and
objectively. His impressions were sound and complete. Though we only
talked and wrote one another, I considered him one of the most reliable
reference sources from "those days" that I have been able to mine.
I'm grateful for people like Cope Robinson who have been interested in
helping record the story of OTR for present and future generations. I shall
miss him for multiple reasons, and I am sure any of you who knew him or read
his insights will miss him, too.
