I'm looking for information on the Society of
American-Vintage Radio Enthusiasts and the Radio
Historical Society of America. The first was active at
least in the early 70s and held conventions, the
second dates to 1959. If you were a member or active
in either group - or have any information about the
groups - please contact me offlist. I'm interested in
doing some writing on these early hobby organizations.
Thanks,
Ryan Ellett

Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Randy Miller asked, "Does anyone know if any of the Major Bowes radio shows
exist?"
I know of at least one, Sept. 21, 1939. It's part of the WJSV complete
broadcast day recording, which is available in stunning sound from First
Generation Radio Archives (standard disclaimers apply, of course).

Walter Slezak was indeed the father of Erica Slezak. I recall seeing her in
person at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater (probably about 1968) as Nerissa,
in "The Merchant of Venice". Walter was probably best known for his role as
Yakov in the Danny Kaye movie "The Inspector General". He was also in the
infamous Ronald Reagan picture "Bedtime for Bonzo". I also remember him as
the villain "The Clock King" on Batman in 1966. He commited suicide in 1983.
Don't let my limited summary of his career belittle him. He was a prolific
actor, and was one of my favorites.

A friend of mine called recently and mentioned an OTR program
which I knew nothing about. It was called "Ma Perkins". He said it was
very good and had a good reputation on OTR as a whole. Unfortunately,
he didn't supply any further information (plot, broadcast dates, what
network it aired on, etc). If anyone knows anything about this program,
I'd appreciate hearing what you have to say. BTW, are there any
copies of this program available? Any info would help.
Thanks,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: WTIC Programs - - - Special News
The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].
But first, some good news. Thanks to David Kaplan, my former
colleague at WTIC, I have found a web host who will provide
a huge amount of storage space and bandwidth for a very low
price. As soon as possible, I plan to post all 89 Golden Age
of Radio shows and all 44 One Night Stand shows at one time,
so that they will be available for listening or download at any
time. I will also post new information and/or features as they
become available.
This week we feature four complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and two "One Night Stands."
"The Golden Age of Radio"
Program 54 - September, 1974 - Mandel Kramer
Program 55 - October, 1974 - Sid Raymond
"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
Program 7 - July 5, 1971 - Bob Eberly
Program 8 - August, 1971 - Stan Kenton
In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."
Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.
Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.

Hi
Looking for anything done by the musical singing group from the 40's. They
called themselves "The Smart Set." 3 girls, 1 guy, like the Andrew Sisters
sound. I thunk they did Jack Benny Show and Alan Young and things like that.
Any info appreciated!

The May 2007 issue of Classic Images announces the death of radio and
television actress Alice Backes on March 15, 2007 at the age of 83 in
Virginia Beach, Virginia. Alice was a longtime Honorary Member of SPERDVAC
and performed in many of the recreations at our conventions. She was a
delightful person with a ready smile for all who greeted her. The last few
years she was having a memory problem. I don't know what the diagnosis was.
