Subject: Bob Hope and also Jinny Janis

         Hi,
I am collecting stories about Bob Hope which can be found on line. I
haven't had the chance to check [removed] but will shortly. If anyone
has seen articles about Bob hope other than those already mentioned in this
Digest, I would love to hear about them and also obtain them.

A long time, friend Jinny Janis passed away on the 18th of May. Jinny was
the tenor of the Chordettes. I first met her in my barbershop life many
hears ago.
In a recent e-mail concerning Jinny, Marjorie Latzko said:

I just learned, with great sadness, that Jinny Janis, founder and
original tenor of the Chordettes, passed away last night from lung
cancer. Jinny's father was King Cole, once President of SPEBSQSA.
When Jinny left in June 1953 to have a baby, she allowed me to take
her place, and let me have all the perks that went with it including
recording with the Chordettes. I got to sing "Mr. Sandman" instead
of her.

When I retired in 1956, Jinny came back and sang with the gals until
they retired in the early '60's. Jinny loved to sing and especially
[removed] the Pioneers group will confirm. A little anecdote
about our friendship: in 1992, when I broke my hip while playing
tennis, and Walter was already handicapped with a stroke from the
year before, we needed help. First Lynn, the lead of the Chordettes,
came to take care of us (for two weeks), and when Jinny found out
about it, she flew from Palm Springs to take over. She stayed for
ten days, and went back home on Christmas Day, and she wouldn't even
let us pay for her airfare! Jinny was a beautiful gal with a
beautiful voice and a dry sense of humor. We will miss her so much.

In 1998, we had a radio convention at SPERDVAC which concerned female
singers of the forties and fifties, I asked her to come and talk about her
career with the Chordettes. The quartet appeared with Arthur Godfrey, and
in fact one the segment for most talented on an Arthur Godfrey's Tallent
Scouts program which is in wide circulation.

Jinny has had emphysema for several years, and according to her daughter
Kaye, was diagnosed with lung and also bone cancer in April.
Those of us who knew her and sang with her and her daughter Kaye over the
years will miss her.

Do I have to subscribe to your newsletter in order to find out if you have
information on George Wilson who ended up at KIVA in Albuquerque? I lost
track
after that and have been trying to find out what happened . George is pretty
well known in radio and I met him on the east coast back in the 60's. He was
in Fla., NY, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, LA, etc. He also worked with
Bartel Media in NY at one time. Please advise since I hope death is not an
option, but it's been so long without hearing from him and George would be in
his
mid 70's as far as I remember. I last talked with him when he was with KISS
and/or KIQQ in LA in the mid-80's.

Thank you,
Sandra Chandler

On another subject. Several postings ago someone asked about the exchange
between Jack Benny and Mel Blanc when they do there Si Cy routine. I came
across this while browsing Luther Sies' Encyclopedia of American Radio. I know
that there are various versions of the repartee, but for what it is worth here
it is:

Benny - Excuse me, are you waiting for the train?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - You're meeting someone on the train?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - A relative?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - What's your name?
Blanc - Cy.
Benny - Cy?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - This relative you're waiting for -- is it a woman?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - Your sister?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - What's her name?
Blanc - Sue.
Benny - Sue?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - Does she work?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - She has a regular job?
Blanc - Si.
Benny - What does she do?
Blanc - Sew.
Benny - Sew?
Blanc - Si.

It does not get better than that.

Art Linkletter was given a Lifetime Achievement Award tonight on the
Daytime Emmys on ABC-TV and he STOLE the show! I hope you folks had a
chance to see it.

Sorry I missed that, don't care about the Emmys but would like to
have seen Art getting the award.

He mentioned his start in radio, and I think the length
of years that he gave for "People Are Funny" and "House Party" included the
pre-TV years. He mentioned that near the beginning of his career in 1933
there was a man in Texas who changed everything by taking a microphone out
to the streets to just talk to people. Was that "Vox Populai" that was
discussed here a short while ago? He didn't mention the name of the person
 > or the program.

That would have been most likely either Parks Johnson or Jerry
Belcher, who working for a Houston radio station took a microphone
out on the streets of Houston for spontaneous interviews with
passerbys. I have a Vox Pop game by Milton Bradley (copyright
1938) patterned after the show. You get points for answering
questions like, "How many lives were lost in the Hindenburg
disaster?", "What inscription is engraved on the tomb of the
unknown soilder?", "Are a cow's horns in front or back of her ears?"
For any interested I placed a picture of the front of the
instruction book that has a picture of Parks Johnson and Wallace
Butterworth (who replaced Belcher when he left the show), at:
