Subject: Johnny Carson & oldtime radio

Johnny Carson paid homage to radio's past stars
frequently on his show. He had Jack Benny and Bob
Hope as guests as well as others who were part of
radio's past. Can you imagine still being on top of
your game after thirty years and seeking to leave,
rather than being shown the door? I had heard that
prior to his last few contracts, NBC had owned the
rights to much of the 1960's material and most of the
1970's which is why when Johnny Carson released the
boxed set of the three decaades, much of the first two
decades was not included. I had heard (the account
differs from someone who said he owned all the
material from 1966 on) that NBC was storage the film
and video from the first two decades and threw it out
to save storage fees. I heard he didn't acquire the
rights and ownership of it until the late 1970's
(whatever remained).

Everything I read agrees that these shows are simply
rebroadcasts of shows from the network run in 1937-38 but the sources are
divided as to whether it was the old scripts being done again or whether
they were simply using recordings from '37-'38 with new intros. Does anyone
know for sure?

They're definitely re-edits of the recordings -- I can confirm this by
having heard original recordings and reissues of the same episodes.

Every episode of the Anacin run of "Easy Aces" was recorded off the
network line by RCA Victor for extension spotting purposes -- many
non-affiliated stations carried the series by recording in markets where
no NBC Blue affiliate available. Ace retained copies of these discs, and
selected storylines were reedited for syndication beginning in 1945.
Contrary to what's generally been reported on these programs, the
storylines chosen for reissue began in 1936, not 1937.

The edits deleted the original Anacin commericals, and inserted a stock
recording of the theme music in place of the various themes used during
the 1936-38 span. In certain episodes, Ford Bond's introductory comments
were deleted as well, and newly written introductions were recorded and
inserted in their place. This was done to bridge the gap in continuity
when certain storylines, containing dated, topical references, were
omitted.

Ace retained the original unedited discs, and these exist today at the
Library of Congress.

If I wanted to produce a live version of an OTR broadcast, say for a senior
citizens home(s), do I face copyright problems? Should I just make up my
own? Any recommendations on scripts to use? Of course I'd want ones with
funny SFX, loud heroes and fainting maidens. Is "The 1940s Radio Hour" a
good one to try?

Subject: More on how radio really worked

I have two more questions for the Harlan Stones and Bill Murtaughs of the
world:
How did show personnel decide whether to use the conventional "microphone on
a stand" vs. the 44B hung from above?
Secondly, were announcers considered in a world unto themselves (like
placekickers on a football team) or did they the same backround as the
actors. I remember comments to the effect in these pages that they were sort
o an inbred tight unit.

It certainly seemed that way. Carson sings and dances "Ballin the Jack",
plays drums, and I believe he even does some sleight of hand. But see below to
note that Carson was already starting to establish himself earlier.

And Jim Hilliker writes:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this the one from Jack's TV show which first

Yes, that's it.

Johnny Carson was also a guest on Jack's TV show a few years earlier, on
November 20, 1955 in the episode "Jack Gives Johnny Carson Advice."

Yes, that's correct. I haven't seen the earlier show yet, but I hope to
some day!

One of the neat things about the Johnny Carson episode is that if
I remember it correctly, it was really designed as a showcase to
help fully introduce Carson to America.

That's pretty remarkable, since at that time Jack Benny was still on CBS, and
Carson was
on NBC. I wonder how they managed to get CBS to allow that.

He was, in fact, supposed to be the great
nephew of John Reid, the Lone Ranger.

OK, let's start up the whole debate about the Lone Ranger's first name again.

I think his first name was "The." Same as Smokey the Bear's middle name.

I have in my collection the audio portion of a Jack Benny TV show that has
Johnny Carson as a guest.

In that episode Johnny does card tricks, dances, sings and plays the drums.
