At the library the other day, I skimmed through the recent, widely-reviewed
biography _Arthur Miller: 1915-1962_ (Harvard, 2009) by Christopher Bigsby.
It devotes a decent number of pages to the playwright's radio work and often
cites Howard Blue's _Words at War_. Bigsby repeats quite a bit of what he
wrote in his earlier _Arthur Miller: A Critical Study_ but he also includes
what seems to be new analysis, excerpts from unpublished scripts and a couple
of Cavalcade of America photos. One interesting nugget: Bigsby says the 1941
Cavalcade episode about Sacajawea is actually by Miller, not Robert L.
Richards.

For anyone who is not aware of it, a new movie comes out in theaters soon
titled ME AND ORSON WELLES.

The movie is based on a rather enjoyable book of the same name by Robert
Kaplow (MacAdam Cage, 2003), in which the main character, a young boy
spends some time with the then 22 year old Welles and lives within his
shadow after he gets a part in the Mercury Theatre's production of
Julius Caesar (I thought of Arthur Anderson while reading it). There is
a scene as I recall where the Mercury Theatre is performing on radio as
well as some scenes while Mr. First Nighter is going on both with Luddy
and Tremayne in the book.

It's a fairly quick read and worth it.

The Lone Ranger railroad events have been going on around the country for the
last few months. My understanding is that these are licensed events and part
of both the ongoing 75th anniversary celebration and the start of the build
up for the upcoming Walt Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer film.

Subject: War of the Worlds

I am sure I won't be the only person chiming in on this [removed] but Orson
Welles apologized to the radio listeners not only multiple times for the
press, but also at the conclusion of the broadcast. If you listen carefully
to what he says, he mentions it was meant to be nothing more than a Halloween
prank, sort of dressing up in a sheet and saying boo. Interestingly, while
numerous people including Welles himself said they knew nothing of what was
going on outside the studio during the broadcast, Welles was clearly aware of
what was happening and had been filled in sometime during the broadcast. This
is clearly evident when he speaks (jovial) that they did the next best thing
and utterly destroyed the Columbia broadcasting System. Relisten to his
closing comment and you'll hear it. Can't miss it.

While we're at the discussion of MERCURY THEATER, someone brought to my
attention a couple weeks ago that there were actually two versions of the WAR
OF THE WORLDS broadcast. Clearly air checks, not a rehearsal recording, for
three reasons. 1. both versions are of varied length, differed by a whole
minute. This isn't the speed of the recording because 2. the dialogue if both
are played at the same time, has slightly different verbage. The crowd scenes
are played slightly different. Remember, no actor reads from their script
word for word, there is always that ad-lib that comes into play and the
ad-libs are different. 3. The sound effects are not timed on the exact same
spot for both recordings.

Last year at FOTR, Charlie Summers came across two different recordings of
TREASURE ISLAND (then known as FIRST PERSON SINGULAR, NOT MERCURY THEATER),
with Welles delivering a different commentary at the conclusion of the
broadcast, making a different reference to young Arthur Anderson, one of the
FOTR regulars. The closing of each episode also has different radio station
call letters -- both East Coast stations. Obvious off-the-air recordings.
Prof. Mike Biel joined in the mystery and we all theorized through the
evening. A week after FOTR, I discovered that MERCURY was dramatized THREE
times each Sunday. Once for the East Coast radio stations. Second for the
West Coast radio stations. Third for a radio station in New York that was,
due to prior contracts, unable to broadcast MERCURY at the time the rest of
the East Coast heard the program, so Welles and cast did it a third time
solely for that one radio station.

This would explain why there are two off-the-air copies of WAR OF THE WORLDS
from the East Coast. But you REALLY have to listen to them both at the same
time to notice the difference between one and the other.

And this sheds light to a new [removed] why a second broadcast on the East
Coast after knowing about the panic? Or was this for the benefit of CBS who
demanded a duplicate performance not for another station in NY, but for their
own legal reasons to make sure they had at least one copy -- same reason why
movie directors always insist on switching reels and filming a second copy in
case something happens to the first reel?

This is sort of a survey and I'd like folks to answer me off digest. Over the
years Imagination Theatre has use many stalwarts of old time radio as actors
on our various shows IE: Harry Bartell, Parley Baer, Larry Dobkin, Rosemary
Rice, Peggy Weber, Janette Nolan, Peter Leeds, Dick Beals, Tyler McVey, Bob
Hastings, Sandra Gould, Herb Ellis, Fred Foy, Rhoda Williams, Gil Stratton,
Arthur Anderson and so and so on. We now have enough stories to consider
releasing a special volume called something like Golden Age Stars on
Imagination Theatre. So the question is, would such a release be of interest
to collectors of OTR? I look forward to hearing the views of all of you good,
bad or indifferent.
