 From Those Were The Days

4/24

1949 Dick Powell starred in Richard Diamond, Private Detective on NBC.
The show stayed on the air for four years.

1955 X Minus One, a show for science fiction fans, was first heard on NBC.

1959 The final broadcast of One Man's Family was heard on NBC after
being on the air 27 years.

4/25

1938 Your Family and Mine, a radio serial, was first broadcast.

4/27

1921 Weather broadcasts were heard for the first time on radio when
WEW in St. Louis, MO aired weather news.

1931 NBC presented Lum and Abner for the first time.

1932 The Texaco fire chief, Ed Wynn, was heard on Texaco Star Theater
for the first time. Wynn, a popular vaudeville performer, demanded a
live audience to react to his humor if he was to make the switch to
radio. The network consented and Wynn became radio's first true superstar.

1937 The initial broadcast of Lorenzo Jones was heard over NBC.

4/28

1947 Studio One on CBS was first broadcast. The show was full of great
stars, but no sponsors. CBS dropped Studio One after a year on radio.

4/30

1945 "How would you like to be queen for a day!" That opening line,
delivered by host, Jack Bailey, was first heard on Mutual on this day.
The first Queen for a Day was Mrs. Evelyn Lane.

1945 Arthur Godfrey began his CBS morning show. His theme was Seems
Like Old Times. Arthur Godfrey Time ran until this very same day in
1972. Godfrey's show used live talent and not records. His popularity
with listeners was the major reason that several sponsors gave Godfrey
the freedom to ad lib their commercials and, from time to time, joke
about the products as well.

Subject: FOTR Commemorative Book

In recognition of the 36th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention,
seeing that this is their final year, I am putting together a slick, glossy,
full-color 48 page book covering every calendar year (all 36 of them) plus
coverage of a historical nature. How Jay Hickerson has become a father
figure, how the convention got founded, when it was called SAVE (before
FOTR), an explanation and all the winners of the Florence Williams, Ray
Stanich and other awards, the Dave Warren Players and the Gotham Players, and
so on. In short, it will be a great book that people can turn to 40 years
from now and have all their questions answered.

I already have a skeleton frame and am seeking photographs. If anyone has
photos they'd like to share, please forward them to me. Make sure to identify
the year and the people in the photos (to make it easier for me). Also, if
you have a great story, a "favorite moment" or fave memory you'd like to
share, please do. Terry Salomonson already provided a great story about how
Parley Baer broke out in cheers the year he attended FOTR (Parley was the
first West Coast guest FOTR had) and was greeting with a standing ovation
when he walked into the room. Don Ramlow explained the leg work that went
into getting Lucille Fletcher to make an appearance at FOTR, and her kind
comments about the recreation of "Sorry, Wrong Number." You get the idea.
(Please make your memories about FOTR, not about you, unless necessary.)

I have a deadline of three weeks so do not delay. Scan your photos and e-mail
me your memories and stories, to me direct.
Martin

It seems like it's been a bad week for OTR comedy writers better known for
their
TV work what with the passing of "Bewitched's" creator Sol Saks at age 100

[removed],0,[removed] a
nd
the just announced news that Madelyn Pugh Davis (aka Madelyn Carroll), age
90 has died.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Madelyn's passing. She was a genuinely nice
person, an enormous talent, and a true pioneer in the industry. I first met
her long before I can remember (starting when I was still a baby, Madelyn and
Bob Carroll Jr. and my dad sometimes held "I Love Lucy" writing sessions at
our house in Brentwood), and we've have had fairly regular contact in recent
years, including a memorable interview I did with Madelyn to create an audio
commentary track for one of the "I Love Lucy" DVDs.

Although Madelyn did at one time briefly date her writing partner, Bob
Carroll Jr., they never married, so she has never in fact been known (other
than mistakenly) as "Madelyn Carroll".

Other than utility stock player Shirley Mitchell and Keith "Little Ricky"
Thibodeaux, is anybody else still alive from "My Favourite Husband"/"I Love
Lucy"?

If you're talking only of actors, there aren't many left

Doris Singleton (Lucy Ricardo's friend/nemesis, Caroline Appleby,) is still
around. She also appeared on "My Favorite Husband." I was listening to the
original 1943 broadcast of "Sorry, Wrong Number" the other day when I thought
I recognized Doris's voice in the role of the Chief Operator. I called Doris
and asked her if it was indeed her (since Agnes Moorehead was the only actor
who received an on-air credit). Indeed it was.

Janet Waldo (the Bobby-Soxer, Peggy, who had a crush on Ricky Ricardo in the
"I Love Lucy" episode with Dick Crenna) is also doing well. She appeared on
"My Favorite Husband." Janet wowed the crowd with her performances at last
year's SPERDVAC convention.

There are a few others still around who were child actors when they appeared
on "I Love Lucy" (such as Bart Braverman).

Of the original crew of "I Love Lucy", only the original film editor, Dann
Cahn (whose son, Daniel, is now President of the Motion Picture Editor's
Guild) and the casting director, Mercedes Manzanares (who also worked briefly
on "My Favorite Husband") survive.

Bill Asher, who directed more than a hundred "I Love Lucy" episodes, is also
still with us. He wasn't on the original "I Love Lucy" crew (he was offered
the job of film editor on the show, but he turned it down because he wanted
to get into directing). A few months later, Billy landed the job of director
on another Desilu show, "Our Miss Brooks," where he stayed until Eve Arden
made the mistake of mentioning to Lucy at lunch one day what a wonderful
director Billy was. The first Lucy episode he directed was the famous
"Chocolate Factory" show. Billy, who a few years later married Elizabeth
McGovern, was also an important creative force as producer-director of
"Bewitched", working with Sol Saks. One of my early childhood memories is
Billy stopping by our house on his way home from work. (This was after "I
Love Lucy", so Billy and my dad were no longer working together at the
studio.) Several times a week, shortly after we'd sat down at the dinner
table in our family room, our doorbell would ring. "There's Billy," my mom
would always say. She'd go to the door and invite him in, while my dad would
get up from the table to fix Billy a drink. Then Mom and Dad would come back
and sit down at the dinner table, and Billy would go sit on the sofa on other
side of the room, where he would sip his drink and talk with us as we ate our
dinner. This became such a routine occurrence that when he finally stopped
coming by quite so often, I'd sometimes sit down for dinner and after a few
minutes I'd turn to Mom and ask, "Where's Billy?"

Not sure what that story has to do with anything, but reading all the
articles about Madelyn has brought back a lot of memories.

Subject: Looking for Whistler show

A while back I was listening to one of the interviews from the WTIC
Golden Age of Radio series featuring a leading actress, but don't
remember who it was.

One feature on the show was her performance in a dual role on The
Whistler. It sounded fascinating, and I would like to locate this
episode and play it my own Golden Age of Radio program - anyone know
what episode it is? Many thanks. - Max
