In the 1960s and 1970s, there was apparently a company known as The National
Recording Company, located in Glenview, Illinois.

Martin, I did business with them by mail, and also saw their cassettes at my
Public Library. They survived into the new millenium, and were later in
Florida.

Hi!

I've been meaning to ask this for a long time, so finally here's my
question. I've been listening to When Radio Was for several years on my
local station in Monterey, CA Saturday and Sunday nights. I want to know,
why the heck did they get rid of Stan Freberg as host of the show?

Thanks.

Is anyone familiar with Howdy Doody on the radio? Everything I can find on
the internet is about the TV show. I have a show from 53-12-24 in which
Buffalo Bob says it is the second anniversary of the Howdy Doody radio show.
They go on to say it is Christmas Eve. One confusing note is that a search of
the New York Times radio listings shows Howdy Doody radio shows from 1948
forward.

I enjoyed Michael Biel's remembrance of Don LaFontaine. I, too had the
experience of working for Floyd L. Peterson, tho' a bit later ('69-'70) and
remember meeting LaFontaine and Bret Morrison there. And I can vouch for
Jackson Beck, too, as Peterson still owes me a couple of hundred bucks.
(FYI, Floyd passed away in 2002) The money meant nothing compared to the
experience, however. What a creative crew worked there - not just
LaFontaine, Windy Craig, and some of the fellows Biel mentioned. I also
worked with Robert Downey (Sr.) and Brain DePalma there. By then, Peterson
was trying to move from voice-over and trailer work in feature film
production. His lack of success other than Downey's "Putney Swope" is one
of the reasons than neither Beck nor I got paid!

Subject: Collecting OTR

I got started in the mid-90s while I was in the 5th grade. I think it was
my interest in Sherlock Holmes that introduced me to OTR, because the first
OTR shows I ever heard were the eight episodes of the Basil Rathbone series
that were released by Radio Yesteryear or Radiola on cassette. They were in
my local public library, but that was all there was. Around the same time I
discovered cassettes from Great American Audio of Jack Benny, Burns & Allen,
Fibber McGee and Molly, and Amos 'n' Andy.

Along the way I found Radio Spirits and Adventures in Cassettes (Metacom)
through cassette collections that were available from special interest
catalogs. I collected several hundred shows on cassette from those
companies and a few others before I discovered CDs from Terry Salomonson at
Audio Classics and the First Generation Radio Archives on the internet.

After recently acquiring a 16" capable turntable and a Technics 1520 reel to
reel deck, I've been collecting lots of shows on transcription discs and
reels, which is probably the most fun I've ever had collecting.

I generally don't collect mp3s unless there's no other way to get a show.
Sound quality is very important to me, and most mp3s sound terrible. Plus
it's just too easy to get thousands of shows for free over the internet. It
just takes all the fun out of it.

The great thing about this hobby is that there is still so much more to
learn and collect. I bought a copy of Jay Hickerson's Ultimate Guide around
1996, and I finally got Mike Biel's Making and Use of Broadcast Recordings a
couple of years ago. Both works have been indispensible.

Sadly, I've never made it to one of the many conventions; they're just too
far away, and I usually have some kind of conflict. Here's hoping I'll make
it to one yet so that I can meet some of the people I've been reading about,
corresponding with, and buying from all this time.

Larry, that estimated 5000 customers a week is one reason I was always
reluctant to take the story at full face value. I quoted the story as I'd
learned it growing up here in Greater Cincinnati.

However, in your Cincinnati statistics you ignored the population of
Northern Kentucky. At the period in question Northern Kentuckians did much of
their shopping in downtown Cincinnati (usually on a once-a-week basis). In
fact I learned the Smilin' Ed McConnel story as a Northern Kentuckian.

Martin, what I remember about the NRC is that they apparently sold
heavily to public libraries. The Cincinnati Public Library stocked DOZENS of
their OTR cassettes through the early to mid-1970s. And the product was
always first-rate - classic shows, bright and clear-sounding. It was
wonderful finding this stuff when I had no more than 75 - 100 shows in my
collection.

Cartoon Brew has posted a photo from "The Mouse that Jack Built" recording

on as well, suggesting they may just have come in from the outside, and
perhaps it's a bit nippy out. (The others are just wearing regular sports
coats.) Cartoon Brew dates the recording session at December 57 or January
58--I guess even in California it gets a bit nippy in the middle of winter.

I have mixed feelings about this, mostly negative. I love this show, but I
was always impressed with the way the remaining members never replaced Willie
Rushton when he died. They merely rotated guests in his chair. And after this
respectful silence, I was sure Humph would never be replaced. But he's going
to be. :( I'm surprised the teams want this. I have great respect for their

Subject: about Michael Pate

The weirdest thing happened. About 2 weeks before he died, Michael Pate sent
me a long query letter for three books he's written, one on westerns, one on
his life, and one on his own pet project, a biography on Dame Judith
Anderson, containing her unpublished autobiography. I lept at these,
responding by email. A few days later, his granddaughter emailed me to say he
was in the hospital. A few days later, I read his obit on a newsgroup, and
emailed the family to say how sorry I was. It's sad. I really wanted to talk
to him about his wonderful career. Well, the projects may still go ahead. But
I'm sorry he won't see them published.
