Subject: Old ancient one.

I recently visited my doctor and, of course had to go to one of the admin.
cubicles
to pay my co-pay. After showing several IDs, giving my date of birth, national
identification number, phone number and mailing address-to prove that I was
who I
said I was before they would take the outrageous amount of money they wanted. I
made my payment. While she was making out a receipt I noticed that there were
cut-out hearts and cupids on the wall. I said "I see you are ready to
celebrate
the holiday". She said "Yes, Valentine's day". I mentioned "It is also Jack
Benny's birthday". She asked "Who is that"? I was incredulous, "really, you
have
never heard of Jack Benny?" She said "no, who was he". I explained that he
was
probably the most popular entertainer, and comedian of the 20th century and to
quote Jack "star of stage, screen, radio and television". She had no clue.
The
young woman in the other cubicle said "I have never heard of him either".
>From a
back room a voice said "I have heard of him, but I don't know who he was". I
told
them to google Jack Benny when they had a chance and left. Pity but I guess
time
marches on. People seem to be concerned with rap lyrics and whatever passes
for
music now and have completely forgotten anything older than 1990. It makes
me feel
so old and out of date, but I enjoy living in the past.

CLASSICS & CURIOS

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 14

Burns and Allen entertain us from 1944 as Gracie starts a "Culture
School" for William Bendix. George adds a little fun culture as he sings
"I Ain't Got Nobody." Classics & Curios Extras include a young Gordon
McCrea, as well as the Horace Heidt band with a young singer named Art
Carney joining in to do "This Is the Army, Mr. Jones."

Wartime Songs -- The marines are mentioned in the Burns & Allen episode
above, and the army is our focus in songs close to the hearts of George
and Gracie and most Americans during WW II. No, George Burns doesn't
sing this time, but we do get to listen to Don Cornell, Sammy Kaye's
Orchestra, The GI Chorus, The Ink Spots, Vera Lynn, Johnny Mercer, Guy
Lombardo, and more as they perform several top Hit Parade tunes and an
army curio song ""Scrubbin' Away."

Subject: A humble request for a topic of discussion

Greetings to all fellow OTR hobbyists on this list! I rarely post as I don't
consider myself as much of an authority on OTR as some that post on a regular
basis. I have found that the folks that post here to be fine people who
really know their stuff. I could easily say the same thing about those I have
met at OTR conventions.

As of late, I have noticed some controversial topics being discussed. I
really would like to bring up a topic for reasonable discussion on this list.
Our fantastic moderator, who I truly do appreciate for maintaining this
digest, may wish to defer this topic but I really would like to see it
discussed. Would it be possible to have folks weigh in on the topic of racist
themes in OTR?

It is not my desire to start "flame war" regarding this issue. It is
certainly a hot button topic. I do believe that it is fair to say that racist
undertones or overtones or both exist in the radio shows of our past.
Unfortunately, it was probably due to the nature of the culture of the time.

I would like to start off the discussion with two possible questions. My
first one is regarding the WHEN of the shift away from overtly racist themes
began. It is my understanding that this probably occurred after World War 2.
Can someone confirm this? Perhaps it was the influence of the giants of the
genre (like Jack Benny) who made the shift and popular culture followed suit.

My next question is regarding how some of you out there feel when listening
to programs that have racist themes in them. I listen to OTR probably on a
daily basis. I have to admit there are times that I would not listen to it if
I thought others could hear exactly what I was listening to. There is no way
I would drive down the road listening to Amos and Andy with my windows down,
for example.

The problem for me is that the shows I listen to may be exciting or truly
funny by their very nature. For example, Amos and Andy was a well written
show as was say, the Jack Benny program or the Great Gildersleeve or Fibber
McGee & Molly. When you listen to their early shows, you will quickly hear
depictions of blatant stereoypes and prejudices. There have been listening
moments for me that were truly cringeworthy.

So that is my offering for discussion on this list. It is my sincere hope
that we converse about this in a reasonable manner. I am not a bigot nor do I
consider anyone on this list to be one. Actually, I would like to reiterate
how much I admire the folks that post and read this list. I read it just
about every day and truly respect and appreciate the knowledge and insight
that are shared.

I sincerely look forward to reading everyone's comments. I also hope that you
all can appreciate my wish to discuss this. This is something that has been
on my heart and mind for some time now.

Sincerely,
Steve Donovan

[ADMINISTRIVIA: This should be a fascinating discussion. I realize it may
require [removed] yes, I'll be monitoring the discussion closely,
but I think this could be an excellent topic. --cfs3]

I, for one, am really enjoying the SHADOW discussion between Anthony and
Martin.

I have seen nothing that could be considered an inappropriate "personal
attack" by either .discussant.

The discussion has brought forth a good deal of information regarding a radio
favorite of mine, in fascinating detail.

This kind of exploration is exactly the heart of what so many of us have found
to make the lifetime hobby of OTR so interesting.

I think a lot of what has been said and been written by radio historians
(including myself)
has been open to discussion/correction/alteration over the years. Like any
other historical study, time is bound to advance information. This is exciting
stuff to those of us who date back to enjoying, and being part of radio 50,
60, or 70 years ago.

I hope editorial constraints don't restrict this and/or future discussions
like this. This is the real "stuff" of our hobby. Thanks to Martin and
Anthony for the lively exploration.
