Perhaps Laura Leff or another of my fellow digesters can set me straight on
Jack Benny's live repeat broadcasts. Ever since the show moved west to LA,
the
East coast broadcast was originated from the West coast at 4:00 [removed] and the
repeat broadcast (for the West coast) at 7:00 [removed]
First question: When did they begin electronically transcribing the repeat
broadcast, instead of performing two live shows on Sundays?
The reason I ask is, I'm trying to figure out how they handled the famous
flubs: Drear Pewson, sweeze chis, grass reek, et al. Did these not occur in
the
live repeat era? If they did, on which of the two broadcasts? For instance,
if the flub occurred on the first broadcast, I refuse to believe that JB
would have the actor make the same mistake on purpose. Heresy! The problem
occurs when Jack, in a later week, refers back to the flub. What should that
part
of the country, that did not have the mistake in their hearing of the episode
in question, make of such a reference by Jack (or some other cast member)? If
the Don Wilson Drear Pewson remark occurred in the first broadcast on that
fateful Sunday, we can assume that the West coast heard Don say it right the
second time around that day. In that event, they missed out on a great
rewrite
of Frank Nelson's initial line later in the broadcast. That audience would be
right to question what all the hoopla was over that show, and why everyone
heard lines (from Don and Frank) that they hadn't heard.
If the answer is that all these examples occurred in the transcribed days,
then how were flubs handled in the live broadcast days.
This same question could be put to other OTR shows as well, but I'm sticking
with JB here since these and other flubs are so well known.

day, Ron Sayles included:
03-23-1910 - Akira Kurosawa, Tokyo, Japan - d. 9-6-1998
film director: NHL Tokyo, Japan
While I realize there are some gaps in my OTR history, including
Japanese OTR, I'm still at a loss to place Mr. ([removed]) Kurosawa in the
firmament of broadcasting.
You could say he's better known for his film work, as he's one of (if
not THE) greatest directors in Japanese cinema.
And you might have heard of some of his movies, like The Seven Samurai,
Yojimbo, Rashomon or Ran. He scripted many of his movies as well but
he's best known for being a director. He also has a sizable and very
vocal following, even ten years after his death.
Rest assured the man actually existed, in any case. :-)
cheers,
Amanda

Thanks, Mark, for mentioning our newly formed, but thriving group in the
Kenosha area "RG Productions." We are passionate about our re-creations and
we are equally passionate about educating our audience about OTR. For
example, last summer when we re-created Candy Matson, Jack French came out to
K-town and did a wonderfully well-received presentation from his book
'PRIVATE EYELASHES.' This June, for our 2nd annual Orson Welles Tribute
(Welles is from Kenosha), we'll have a local film historian discuss the
significance of 'THE THIRD MAN' before we perform that. At our last Sherlock
Holmes performance in February, we had little kids lying on the carpet in
front of the microphones, enthralled!!!
But, in response to Craig W's comments and creativity at Quicksilver, and
Paul A.'s comment:
"I have also created a local heroine, Franklin Frankie, and her private eye
sidekick Bette Noir, who specialize in "thwarting" bad [removed]"
What happens for many groups is, we "get bit" by the creative bug as
[removed] that re-enacting them and re-living them is no longer the sole
focus of the [removed] rather, adding to the genre as well. At least
that's what's happening to us. I've also created a female private eye:
Rebecca Diamond, Private Eye (a noir story) which has been a tremendous
amount of fun and has contributed to the current [removed] writers in
our group have have stepped forward with their own radio dramas as well, this
is also happening out at Willamette Radio Workshop in Portland, where they
are turning out some very creative, more edgey audio theater.
Anyway, I hope I'm not too off-topic, but wanted to contribute to the
re-creation conversation.

Occasionally on this list we discuss products that advetised on the
radio in the golden age. I was at Whole Food Markets yesterday and see
where Crazy Water is again available in select stores, altho I suspect
someone is using the name and logo but it may not be the original
company. I've transferred a few of the Crazy Water shows from the late
30s. This company is also located in Mineral Wells Texas.
[removed] I believe is the web site. They have 4 flavors now, no
minerals through high mineral content.
I enjoyed the radio show.

I would be interested to know if the following BBC series survives in any
private collections in the US. Although originally broadcast on the BBC, it
was also networked across 200 stations in the States :
' The Price of Silence ' by Stephen Barlay. Originally broadcast on BBC
Radio 4, in 9 parts, from 24th April - 19th June 1983.
If you can help, please drop me a line off-list.

Subject: Patsy Lee
As most Digesters know, Patsy Lee was hired in 1947 to be the
principal singer on Don McNeil's Breakfast Club. She was only 19 at
the time, but had sung on San Francisco radio stations for the
previous five years, where she was discovered by Cliff Petersen, the
Breakfast Club producer.
She later married Rick Lifvendahl (O'Donnell?) and they had two
daughters before he was killed in an auto accident in 1956. Patsy
continued her appearances on the Breakfast Club, both on radio and TV.
I'm not sure what she did after the Breakfast Club went off the air.
She was one of the primary cast members attending the Breakfast Club
tribute to Don McNeil hosted by the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters in
1977. By that time she had re-married but I don't know that husband's
name.
Our keeper of the Vital Stats, Ron Sayles, reports there is a dearth
of facts regarding Patsy. If she's still alive, she'd be about 77 today.
Any Digesters know anything regarding recent activities or current
status of this talented radio singer?
