Subject: The Lone Ranger novels
All of the Lone Ranger novels are still under copyright protection. An
article last month cited all the novels and Big Little Books (and Better
Little Books) and comic books and their original copyright registrations and
their renewals. In fact, the novels, including the one Mr. Baechler pointed
out, were reprinted in paperback format in the early 1980s and that
publishing company made sure the copyright was renewed before reprinting
them. Project Gutenberg has had books pulled from their cite many times due
to copyright violations. I only state this as a correction to Mr. Baechler's
statement: the copyright was renewed and the novel is NOT in the public
domain.
Incidentally, the cost of the novels is between $5 and $10 (postage included)
and I don't think I spent more than $70 total for all 18 hardcover novels
from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. I bought most of them at $5 at conventions.
(Heck, three of them for a flat $10.) At that cheap of a price, they are
worth buying and owning rather than seeking free scanned downloads. I have
read them all and the best novel of the bunch is THE LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN
from 1941.

Subject: "lost" Hopalong Cassidy and Mysterious Traveler
Just passing along news recently posted on the MANC site. The Mid-Atlantic
Nostalgia Convention is being held in August (9 to 11) this year, not
September. Among the old-time radio re-creations are TARZAN, HOPALONG CASSIDY
and THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER. (Yes, we have clearance from the copyright
holders.) Both THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER (from 1946) and HOPALONG CASSIDY (from
1942) are "lost" radio broadcasts that do not exist in recorded form and
therefore are new to everyone's ears. HOPPY is unique as someone recently
found two radio scripts from 1942 that were written (one apparently
broadcast) but were not part of the regular 1950-52 series and was not the
same script from the FORECAST broadcast. In other words, Hopalong Cassidy was
on the radio more than previously documented.
The convention web-site also has a few articles such as HOWDY DOODY on radio,
THE JOE DIMAGGIO RADIO SHOW and others. So even if you cannot attend the
convention this year, check out the articles.

Subject: Fibber reference on Letterman
David Letterman last night (20th) made a reference to "Fibber McGee and
Molly" during his monologue. When a previous joke in which he made a
reference to the film "The Grapes of Wrath" seem to go over the audience's
head, he seemed to realize that such was too literate or too old of a
reference to make and he then compounded the situation by saying "Don't open
that closet, Fibber!"
Sadly, most young people today won't know from "Fibber McGee," but it's truly
sad whn they cannot grasp a reference to Steinbeck's great work of literature
nor to the phenomenal movie John Ford made out of it. That's something I'm
not Fonda.
"Whenever there's a young person not getting an old-time radio reference ...
I'll be there."
Derek Tague
with too many references to the word "reference" in this post ("That's about
the size of it.")
