Norman Corwin's older brother Emil passed away on March 15 of cardiac
arrest, according to the obituary published in the Washington Post on
March 22nd. Had he lived until April 28, he would have turned 108.

Emil Joseph Corwin actually appeared as an actor in a couple of Norman's
early programs, I think; probably before Norman was hired by CBS. So he
has a direct connection to OTR as well as a "relative" one.

However, I haven't been able to find the specific reference; I'd love to
know which shows Emil appeared [removed]

As for Norman, I spoke with him on the phone at the beginning of March,
and can report that his wit and sense of humor are as good as ever. He
will turn 101 on May 3rd.

join then newspaper columnist, Ed Sullivan, on his interview show.

from a small mining town in the West find happiness as the wife of a
wealthy and titled Englishman?" was asked each day for next 22 years.

1936 The serial Backstage Wife made a move across the dial from the
Mutual Broadcasting System to NBC. Once there, the program continued to
air for the next 23 years.

had been paying up to $3,000 per week ($35,382 in 2009 dollars) to
attract name talent.

1946 Academy Award was heard for the first time. The first dramatized
story was Jezebel and starred actress Bette Davis.

Jim Harmon's "The Great Radio Heroes", copyright 1967 is my OTR Bible. My
dog-eared pocket book version accompanies me while waiting in Doctor and
Dentist Offices and especially for Servicing my cars.

Here is Jim's synopsis of Soap Opera Plots: "While soap operas began with
simple close-to-home domestic problems, time wore out the appeal of such
basic plot devices as the sex triangle. The wandering husband, the eager
secretary and the wronged wife soon became subplots, secondary to such real
and earnest matters of everyday life as finding a murderer, a jewel thief or
an Egyptian mummy."

Jim cites this example: "Stella Dallas not only located that stolen Egyptian
mummy, she restored the real Sheik Ahmead to his rightful position, and with
Lolly, accompanied Ahmead back to his sheikdom. There Stella had to survive
sand storms, attacks of desert nomads, and a curious cruise through the Suez
Canal in a submarine."

Thanks Jim for your insight into soap operas.

Well, this isn't about OTR but it's pretty close. Dorothy Lena Young
died March 20th in Tinton Falls, New York at the age of 103. Oh, that

For those of you with long memories, in the 1920's she was billed as
"Radio Girl of the 1950's" in the Broadway show of magician Harry
Houdini. Dorothy, a talented dancer, was in two of his magic acts in
that program. The one that gave her the most fame involved a giant
mock-up radio that was brought on stage by Houdini stage hands. He
then opened the back, showing the audience that it contained nothing
more than standard wireless innards. (And most of the audience would
know, since many radio listeners in the 20s had built their own sets.)

The large radio was turned around and a voice crackled over the
theater loudspeaker "This is [removed] Miss Dorothy Young
doing the Charleston." Then, from the empty radio, 18 year old
Dorothy emerged, one leg at a time. Houdini lifted her to the stage
floor and she danced the Charleston. Dorothy was on tour with Houdini

death of Houdini in October of 1926.

She would go on to modest success in the movies and theater. Her
second husband, and dance partner, Gilbert Kamie, became a
millionaire when he turned his parent's silk business into a very
successful lingerie company. In 2002, now a widow, Dorothy donated $

brother and father had studied theology. For her 100th birthday
party, she did a 5 minute dance solo for her guests.

At the time of her death, she was the last surviving member of
Houdini's team and the last one on earth to have known him
personally. She was asked many times after his death, to explain his
tricks, particularly the Chinese water torture chamber where he
escaped from shackles while suspended upside-down underwater, but
the "Radio Girl of 1950s" stayed true to her secrecy contract of
1925 and never revealed a word of it.
