Could someone who has info on the convention forward it, or perhaps point me
to a web site where info might be found? I'm relatively new, and so I'm sure
won't be on the mailing list.
Don't know if I can make it this year or not, but I'd sure like to try!
Thanks!

Monitor, IMHO, kept network radio alive in some form for years after it
was supposed to be dead . It extended the life of Fibber McGee and
Molly in the 1950s and brought back X Minus One in the 70s.
What brought X Minus One back in the 70s was the fact that Galaxy Magazine, its sponsor
in the 1950s, decided to revive the show in syndication, thinking either that they owned the
trademark rights to the title or at least that NBC had abandonned those rights.
Galaxy actually put out one or two shows, but NBC insisted it still owned the rights to a
trademark they hadn't actually used in nearly 20 years. They put X Minus One reruns back
on the air mainly to bolster their claim. Galaxy Magazine might have won a lawsuit, but
there was no way it could afford to litigate against NBC.

Elizabeth, I seem to remember hearing an Archie episode that somebody had
converted to mp3 that had an opening statement indicating it was from
Radio Spirits. Does that mean some negotiation for rights has already
occurred but for some reason only for a handful of episodes, or maybe it
was part of 'the bluff'.
Radio Spirits has generally refused to say what rights they have, and some have accused
them of bluffing regarding rights. But it's one thing to try to scare off competition by bluffing
about having rights, if that's what they're doing. It's quite another to actually put out a show if
you don't have the rights. That's not a bluff, it's copyright infringement.
While the extent of their rights isn't clear, they do seem to be quite dilligent about obtaining
and paying for rights to the programs they actually sell. It's always possible some
bootlegger could have attached a Radio Spirits announcement on a program that didn't come
from there. But if it came from Radio Spirits, I think it's a pretty good bet they have at
minimum, a non-exclusive license for some period of time to sell that particular program.
Whether they have more than that is anyone's guess.

From Those Were The Days --
1928 - Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll left WGN radio in Chicago to
head across town to WMAQ radio. They weren't able to take their
previously popular radio show names with them due to contract
limitations. So Sam and Henry were no more. However, Gosden and Correll
came up with a new name for the show that became even more popular than
the first. A year later it was the national hit: Amos and Andy.

The dose of x-rays pouring through our

our phalanges twitch in real time. I wonder if anyone has ever done a
study of the prevalence of toe cancer in baby boomers.
Toe cancer? Not that I know of, but a couple of years ago the government
released a study that seemed to show that "baby boomers" who had repeatedly
viewed their feet through the fluoroscope machines in shoe retalers' shops,
later suffered elevated rates of thyroid cancer.
Reminds me of my youth in western Pennsylvania. We mostly had coal furnaces
for heating. Inside the furnaces were brick-lined fireboxes; the bricks
were held inplace with asbestos cement, and the pipes that carried the heat
were insulated with asbestos tape - because it was an efficient insulator.
Who knew?

Clif Martin's post most certainly brought back some wonderful
memories. Yes I certainly remember Jack the Bellboy and Luke the Spook.
Also brought back thoughts of Bill Lamb, I have a tape of his last
broadcast. Ed Berryman (sp) from WFDF in Flint who received a real bad
deal from the station a few years back. Bob Dyer (sp) still going
strong on WKNX. And last but not least Fred Krell from WSGW, listened
to him each and every morning, he was my wake up guy. Thanks Clif for
getting the juices to flow. Roger ----whoa you really started the flow.
What about over at WJR where we had [removed] McCarthy, Jimmy Launce, Jay
Roberts, named Disk Jockey of the year 1966-67, Mike Whorf, Marc Avery
and Ted Strasser. Wow what a line up. I used to listen to one show I

Crosby sound alike. I'll close again before any more juices flow.

does anyone out there have the cast list for the
Dick Foley Caper on Sam Spade?
At the time of the Dick Foley Caper broadcast, Sept 26, 1948, the actors
appearing on the show were not credited, only Howard Duff as Sam Spade
and Lurene Tuttle as Effie Perrine are identified. Listening to the show
I have identified Frank Lovejoy as Dick Foley and Paul Frees as Claude
Spicer, with the parts of Maxine Foley and the fisherman as
unidentified.
My question to our resident actors is "Why did some shows not credit the
actors, some list only the principals, and some shows list all actors
and the parts they played?"

George mentioned: 'Another method would be if a group of 10 dealers and
collectors to each put [removed] into the pot and put it into their normal
catalogs. Now, we can say that's a lot of money, but [removed] for 100
non-circulating Archie episodes is only [removed] a piece. Even for a collector,
its a great deal. For a dealer, all they would have to do is sell two
copies, and they would have their money back. Sounds like a no-lose
situation.'
I think the $[removed] figure would just be a drop in the bucket. Elizabeth is
in more of a position to give a more authorative answer to this but I would
think it would be a bit more complicated that just $[removed] Bear in mind
that many factors would have to all be inplace, and many parties would have
to be satisfied before and commerical release could result. For instance; I
would think that [removed] would have a claim due to the use of their
resigtered tradmark of the [removed] name and chimes, along with the comic
distributer, sponsor, and if Hal is correct in that his contact granted him
a multi-part ownership of the shows themselves, then he would have to be
satisfied as well.
Now I can't be positive about this, but I would say that if it was really
easy to get all of these 'bases' covered, then more than likely someone
would have taken a 'stab' at it.
I agree it would be nice see the shows released, but I think that it would
be as equally difficult to raise that kind of money.

After reading all the hub bub about getting the Archie shows out of the

web page trying to uncover a silent movie serial, The Hope Diamond
Mystery from the LOC, and from what I have been informed of the process

getting all of the Archie shows available to us. You can add me to the
list of the people who would order a set of the shows. In fact, Mr. Stone
would like the fact that Jughead has been my favorite character from the

I was just wondering about a technical element of OTR and was hoping some of
our esteemed OTR actors would comment on this, maybe even the unesteemed
ones too. They know who they are :)
Anyway, from what I have read, I understand that often, if a show was done
for the entire nation, they would go on the air and do the East Coast
version then later do the West Coast version. Just out of morbid curiosity,
I was wondering, when after rehearsal, if it was common to do the east coast
version on the air and then have to revise the script or dialog quickly
before the west coast version because something in the show just didn't
work. I know this is sort of an odd question, but I'm curious if that sort
of in-between tinkering had to be done with any frequency because sometimes
rehearsal just isn't the same as the real thing.

Years ago, I came across an old show which features Singing Sam. I was

are there available copies of his shows? I would like to collect these as my

listed with any dealers. Any information would be Jim Dandy! Thanks, JIM F

Friends - I am grieved to report that Dave Warren passed away Tuesday
evening at 6:20.
He was receiving dialysis treatment, which negatively affected his
heart. All his physicians could do was to give him morphine to ease his
pain, and he died last night in his sleep.
Dave was a great guy. I'm sure I'm not the only OTR person to learn a
great deal from him. And he made us laugh. A lot. Not an ability to be
dismissed easily.
A championship swimmer and diver in his youth, he lived his life with
diabetes. As so many afflicted with this condition, Dave gained a great
deal of weight, and it took its toll.
He was a fine artist, for years successfully in the field of commercial
art. Numerous Old Time Radio and other publications bore his artwork on
their covers and inside. Recently he was honored to be asked to
participate in the dedication and hanging of his oil portrait of [removed]
Grant, displayed at the President Grant birthplace in Ohio.
Dave was a founder of Old Time Radio activities in Cincinnati, where this
year's annual convention takes place April 19 and 20. He founded the Dave
Warren Players, a wonderful team that re-created original radio scripts at
various OTR conventions. One of their best known and often requested
portrayals featured the characters created by Freeman Gosden and Charles
Correll in the Amos 'n Andy shows. Now Dave can perform with them all.
David Warren is survived by his wife Lois. Plans for services have not yet
been made. Messages may be sent to Lois at the following address:
