Subject: Happy Birthday to Norman Corwin!
Norman is 95! Born May 3, 1910.
If you'd like to send him a Birthday greeting direct, you can. On his
website at [removed] there's a "Contact Corwin" page.
If you send snailmail to the address given, John Weber instantly
forwards it on to him. If you send email, his email address does not
appear there, publicly, but the program automatically turns it 'round
and shoots it out to him.
No, it's not an imposition; he'll be delighted. And no, it's not too
late. You might even get a reply, although it may take a while as Norman
is going to be very busy keeping up with all the hoopla.
NPR stations, Chuck Shaden, and the BBC, among others, are doing special
rebroadcasts of ON A NOTE OF TRIUMPH (which will have its 60th
anniversary this coming Sunday). NPR is also rebroadcasting the
hour-long biography program, narrated in 1995 by Charles Kuralt. Check
with your local stations to see when these things will air (and if your
station isn't planning to carry them, you might want to politely ask why
the hell not).
BTW, Corwin's programs are available for airplay -- FREE -- to any
station. Info is also on the Corwin website on the Broadcast/Performance
page.
Happy Birthday Norman!

I agree with Ellsworth Johnson that shows that are past the copyright
deadlines should be released to the public by the Library of Congress. I
also think that these shows should be more readily available to the public
without so much red tape and such huge fees.
Most true collectors wouldn't mind paying a reasonable cost for the shows
[removed] not the absurdly high fees they charge now.
Would like to know if there is a list of shows LOC has that isn't
available anywhere else online or from OTR dealers.
For example do they have more than the 300 something Amos N' Andy shows
that you usually find for sale by most OTR sellers.
It will be interesting to know just how many unreleased shows that LOC
has in its archives that are not available [removed]

Subject: LOC
I agree with Ellsworth Johnson on this point. After
certain programs are of a certain age, they should be
placed in what's known as 'public domain'. After all, to
keep all of these programs in some library somewhere,
away from the public, so they can't be enjoyed except by
a select few, doesn't seem right. These programs are meant
to be enjoyed, not just placed in some corner of the LOC
where they could be forgotten.
I realize that there might be some who disagree with
me, that's to be expected. Yet, I'm sure there are some who
will agree that to keep all of these programs in Washington,
[removed] (far away from where most of us live) and to charge
such exorbitant prices (like the ones recently quoted,
which amount to more money than some of us can afford)
just to spend a few minutes to listen to one or two programs
at best, is ridiculous! If the LOC could open themselves
up to the possibility of selling some of these tapes to
collectors, such as ourselves, they could probably make
more of a profit than if they just waited for the collectors
to come to the LOC and pay to listen to them.
Just a thought.
Another OTR Fan,
Kenneth Clarke
[ADMINISTRIVIA: "Public Domain" is clearly defined, and the LOC cannot make
decisions on what is and is not properly covered by copyright, trademark, or
other protection. Let's not beat up on the LOC when the real fault is
Congress and it's never-ending copyright protection. --cfs3]

Subject: Jack French wins big!!
For those who don't know - Jack French won the prestigious Agatha Award this
past
weekend! Way to go, Jack!! For those seeking a more official announcement,
here
goes:
JACK FRENCH WINS AGATHA AWARD
Jack French won the Agatha Award for 2004 Best Nonfiction with his book
"Private Eyelashes: Radio's Lady Detectives" which was presented on
April 30, 2005 in Arlington, VA at the seventeenth annual Malice
Domestic, the largest mystery convention on the east coast.
The Agatha Awards, named for Agatha Christie, are presented to winners
in five categories of mystery literature: Best Novel, Best First Novel,
Best Nonfiction, Best Short Story, and Best Children's Novel. Winners
are chosen by secret ballot of approximately 800 Malice Domestic
attendees who come to the convention from throughout North America and
Europe. The Agathas are among the most prestigious honors in the field
of mystery and crime literature, including the Edgars, presented by
Mystery Writers of America, and the Anthonys, presented by Bouchercon.
The trophies for the winners of the Agatha consist of specially created
teapots, embossed with the category, year, and a traditional skull and
crossbones, symbol of murder mysteries.
"Private Eyelashes" chronicles the complete history of the 44 network
radio shows that featured a woman crime solver in the lead or co-lead
of the series. It debuted in April 2004 to critical acclaim from both
the OTR community and the world of mystery literature. Jack won the Ray
Stanich Award in October 2004 and one month later the Library of
Congress chose his book to be recorded as a Talking Book for the blind
and disabled.
Old radio. Old movies. New books.

No such luck.

If it is the one I'm thinking of, it is called," Origin Of Superstition." It
is from 1935, and there is 39 shows in all. It explains such topics as: The
Rabbits Foot,Black Cats crossing in front of you, etc; and superstitious
nonsense like that. Go to "Google" and type in "OTRCAT." He has them for sale
on CD's And MP3 CD's. Good luck and hope it is the right one.

Hi All--- I have been reading the thread on LOC-- I think maybe a
lot of us need to contact or congressman and see if they would get
up a bill to put all of this material-- over some certain age-- into
PUBLIC DOMAIN.
Coincidentally, the Library of Congress is soliciting comments from
anyone interested in the topic of "orphan works." See this page:

Anyone may send a letter by e-mail to the LOC. The deadline is May 9,

There are posted comments from William Spear of Hunterdon Radio

Subject: Jack Benny's last show
I recently listened to some of the last CBS programs of 1955, and it is an
odd experience. For example, Jack Benny's show is peppered with very
sentimental moments (the band presents Jack with a watch) but there are also
many "cautious" references to summer vacations and the fall season. Did the
cast suspect but not know for certain that the show was through but were not
certain?

Subject: distorted audio
Hi
I was wondering if anyone could determine the cause of
this very annoying audio problem? I use a
SoundBlaster Live [removed] card. Before the Platinum
burned out, I also had this [removed] Live as a backup.
Well, the problem has happened to both soundcards.
The problem is: that about 15-20% of the time, the
waveform will NOT record correctly. It will end up as
being horribly distorted. Sometime the waveform is
fine up to a point and then distorted, and sometimes
just all distorted. The sound will sound just fine AS
it is recording, but then afterwards, when played
back, distorted. This only seems to happen when the
reel deck is into the line in, it never happens with
the turntable.
I have used both cool edit 2000 and cool edit pro ( I
have sound forge, but it has a horribly un-user
friendly editing interface). It's done it to both
2000 and Cool edit pro. Any suggestion's what is
causing this?
Thanks,
TC

I'd like to promote a site that I discovered several
years ago, during one of my online searches for OTR,
and that is the American Museum of Radio and
Electricity (formerly the Bellingham Radio Museum. Its
curators Jonathan Winter and John Jenkins have pulled
together a wonderful collection of radios from
yesteryear. I've never been to their location in
person, but it's my hope that if I ever attend the
radio convention in Seattle, I will be able to take a
jaunt to Bellingham. These two websites have some
wonderful photos of old radios and other equipment, as
well as some clips and interactive experiences. I
don't know of Mr. Winter or Mr. Jenkins are members of
the Digest, but they ought to be.

Hmmmn. A Wistful Vista mystery? I wonder if it would

But which of them would be the first to investigate

I suspect 'what's in the closet' isn't the goal of the mystery. I would
instead suggest it might be:
1) What permanent job can Fibber get and retain?'
2) 'When 'Teenie' turns 35, will she still call to Fibber "Hey, Mister?" '
3) 'Will Fibber of Molly ever slip on the freshly waxed floors, suffer
great injury, and sue Johnson's (now [removed] Johnson, 'cause the executives
couldn't add any other value to the company) obtaining enough money for
Fibber to never have to 'work' again?'
I'd vote for #1, personally.
