Folks;
Over the past few weeks an issue has rasied itself to the forefront, and
I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. Please wander over to:

...for an explaination. I'd like to keep the discussion there, please, for
while this deals with the operation of the Digest, it really doesn't deal
with Old-Time Radio.

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Sort of off-topic and not necessarily good for our friend Anthony Tollin but
a visit to HALF-PRICE BOOKS today found a rather large number of Mr. Tollin's
recent SHADOW pulp reprints remaindered! Didn't see any of the DOC SAVAGE
ones. If you have a HALF-PRICE BOOKS near you, you can quickly and cheaply
establish a nice collection of this great series.

I was always under the impression that, until the late 40s, there was a
strict ban on anything on the networks that was pre-recorded. Sound effects
were obviously an exception. Were there others?

First, I thank all you for the responses.
Second, my friend was referencing the comic book character.
Third, his age appears to be near mine, which would place his serious
radio listening during the 40's and early 50's.
And last, from the responses, it would appear there was no radio program
of the comic book character, Green Lantern.

I wouldn't be surprised if THE GREEN LANTERN was available on an LP record
audio drama, but not on old-time radio.
A previous posting a fewmonths back asked about THE PHANTOM being done on
radio. Paperwork had recently been unearthed to verify that the rights to the
character were licensed for a radio program in the mid-forties and a pilot
recording was made, as well as planned prospectus of how many were going to
be recorded for syndication across the country. Apparently all the
advertising (what little there was) that made it to trade columns did not
encourage enough sales from radio stations to have the series produced.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
There were a couple of radio shows which had the word 'green' in the
title.
One was called "The Green Hornet" and the other was "The Green Lama".
"The Green Hornet" was the secret identity of publisher Britt Reid of The
Illustrated Press, who had a manservant named Kato. The vehicle that
provided
their transportation was called The Black Beauty. If I'm not mistaken, it
also
was a short lived series on television during the 1960's and the character of
the
"Green Hornet" appeared on the "Batman" television show in the early 1960's
as
a guest crime solver.
I'm afraid I can't provide much information on "The Green Lama". I've
heard
that it was on radio during the 1940's, and was quite good for its genre.
I'll say this, however, I can see how some collectors could become
confused
due to the use of similar words in many of the titles of radio programs.
I don't think it was a radio program, but there was a superhero in
comic books
called the "Green Lantern" who was part of the Justice League of America.
Could
this be who you're thinking of?

Subject: Tom and Clark
Perusing the radio guide section of the New York Times for December
12, 1932, I ran across a couple of interesting items logged under
WABC in Manhattan, which I believe in that era was a CBS affiliate.
Anyway, most of the morning fare consisted of quarter-hour shows of
singers and musical groups. Included in that day's lineup were two
male singers who would later be, respectively, the voices of Superman
(and Clark Kent) as well as Tom Mix.
At 7:45 AM "Bud Collyer, Songs" aired for 15 minutes and from 10 to
10:15 it was "Artells Dickson, Songs." Collyer, of course, got the
role of Superman in 1938 (the series went nationwide in 1940) and
Dickson became the first actor to play Tom Mix when that radio series
debuted in 1933.
Incidentally, I'm amused with the brief characterizations with which
newspapers described the type of show each program, [removed] "talk,"
"humor," "songs," "exercise," "dramatic sketch" etc. Almost every
adventure show, juvenile program, or soap opera was termed a
"sketch," including "Bobby Benson," "Vic and Sade," "Just Plain
Bill," and "The Witch's Tale." However there were departures from
this policy: "Skippy" and "Little Annabelle" were tagged "sketch"
while "Little Orphan Annie" was called a "childhood playlet." In
addition, "The Trouble Doctor" was called a "skit" but the amateurish
"Detectives Black and Blue" bore the title "mystery drama."
It gets curiouser and [removed]
