Subject: Siblings; Married Couples
It has been several days since the original question of siblings and married
couples came up that I forgot how the question was phrased. Was the inquiry
about OTR performing together, or did the inquirer just want to know about
siblings and husbands and wives, even if they did not perform together? If
the latter is the case, there were Sam and Jack Edwards (and a show business
sister, but I do not know if she performed on radio). The obvious:
Announcers Richard Stark and Charles Stark were brothers. In Hollywood,
there were Wendell Niles and Ken Niles, both announcers.
Regarding married couples, this was the obvious: Frank and Anne Hummert. Did
anyone mention the fact that Elliot Lewis and Cathy Lewis were married? and
divorced? Cathy's real surname was coincidentally Lewis. Elliot later
married Mary Jane Croft, and they retired in Oregon. Jeanette Nolan and
John McIntyre were a couple. Let's go way back, for people who love radio
soap operas, such as Jim Cox. Amzie Strickland and Frank Behrens were
husband and wife, as well as Karl Swenson and Joan Tompkins. How's that for
starters?

Re: Wartime music.
Do 60's war protest songs qualify for this thread?
One song I remember was by Phil Ochs. I think it was
called the "Draft Dodger Blues". The chorus started
"I'm only 18, got a ruptured spleen and my friends all
carry a [removed]"
How about the Kingston Trio "Where have all the
flowers gone? (When Will They Ever Learn)?
These do not fit in the traditional patriotic/
nostalga category of "Praise the Lord and Pass the
Ammunition", the "White Cliffs of Dover" or "The Last
Time I Saw Paris", but they do reflect the songs of a
wartime era.

Subject: Re: Dancing on Radio
Probably the most outstanding ongoing radio showcase for a dancer was
Fred Astaire's headline role on the Packard Hour during the 1936-37. This
NBC variety hour presented Astaire as the "Most Versatile Man On the
Screen," featuring him as a singer, light comedian, and dancer -- thanks
to a wooden tap floor provided on the studio stage.
The series was one of the most highly-touted features of that season, and
surviving broadcasts make for very enjoyable listening today -- but
Astaire left after only that one year, due largely to his inabilty to get
along with his co-star, the comedian Charlie Butterworth. It was
Astaire's only attempt at series radio.
A tap dancer was also a featured attraction on the "Friendly Five
Footnotes" program of 1931-32. This was a fifteen minute weekly program
of dance music by Freddie Rich's Orchestra, with tap interludes provided
by a performer identified only as "Friendly Fred." Fred was actually a
composite -- his singing voice was provided by CBS staff tenor Larry
Murphy, while the taps were provided by vaudevillian Jackie Clarke.

In the 30s there were the Pickens Sisters, who sounded much like the
contemporary Boswell Sisters and the slightly later Andrews Sisters. I'm
not sure I've ever heard an OTR show with the Pickens, but I've seen them in
at least one movie on TCM.

There were The Johnson Brothers. They were dancers,
who can be seen in that excellent Glenn Miller
movie SUN VALLEY SERENADE.
Ooooops - The Nicholas Bros, Harold & Fayard, were the
dancers in aforementioned movie, not the Johnson Bros . .

Was just sitting here reading today's digest and suddenly it popped into my
head: The Moylin Sisters. My wife used to listen to them back in the late
thirties, early forties. She can still sing the sponsor's jingle about
Thrivo Dog Food. It keeps your puppy peppy, full of vim and very much
alive-o. Or something like that.

Bob Crosby ever work with brother Bing on the radio?

Subject: before they were famous
Dear Digesters:
I am attempting to put together a lecture (with audio clips) of a progam
entitled "Before they were famous" -these are people (mostly actors) who got
their start in radio, and then moved on to other things including television
and movies.
Danny Thomas; William Conrad, Mason Adams, all come to mind, but I am
looking for others.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Can a broken (phonograph) record be fixed?
I have a set of five 78 RPM records ("Bing Crosby- St.
Patrick's Day", to be precise). A small piece of one
of the records somehow broke off, either when I was
transporting the set home, or before I'd bought it,
and I just hadn't noticed. Can this record be
repaired, and if so, how? Would a few drops of super
glue work, or would a more intricate repair process be
required?
I can still listen to most of the record, since the
break is right near the edge; but it'd be nice to be
able to hear the whole thing.

Subject: I love the green tuning eye!/Cinci convention
My newest addition to my OTR listening tools is a c. 1937-40 Westinghouse
WR 266 console radio. It rocks! Green tuning eye, robot dial (push a
button and the motor drives the dial to that station), more attractive (in
my opinion) than the Zeniths, and perfectly restored. I got it for 250,
which is a steal! I believe it's also a scarce console too, which is a
bonus! I also have an unrestored but kinda working (stuck on WLW)
SIlvertone 4786 w. tuning eye in the living room, across from the
Westinghouse. If you want a pic of the Westinghouse (around 3MB), will be
glad to send. If you're in Cinci, run, not walk to Past Times, that radio
shop I was talking about. Been in the same radio business for 50 years.
I'm glad to hear Robert Newman is doing well. I can't wait for the
convention. I hope to see Charlie Summers and all of you there! I'll be
meeting a few ppl from the OTR Researchers Group.
