Subject: Fixing OTR photos

Someone some time ago posted a request about having work done on OTR
photos and asking for help from someone with knowledge of Photoshop.

Photoshop is one option for doing the restorations but it can be very time
consuming particularly on black and white images which require hand
correction. Color can be fixed to some extend by the scanner program.
Automated
correction doesn't work well with B&W.

Many of the pros, including ourselves outsource the work because it is
fast and cheap. $5 is not an unusual charge for general correction. There
are
several companies that do it. We use this company:

If anyone has any questions please contact me off list.

Kenneth Clarke asked about "I Deal In Crime" a show I just happened to
featured show on my web site a few weeks back.

Here's a direct link:

Subject: Johnny Dollar's Expenses

As a fan of Johnny Dollar I've always wondered about those expense
reports of his. Since I'm recently retired, I decided to add them up,
at least for the shows that are in existence. I built a log and went
through the shows and put this all into an online database. You can view
the results on my Special Features page:

Subject: April 2013 issue of RADIO RECALL

The PDF full-color edition of RADIO RECALL went out today to Metro Washington
OTR Club subscribers who prefer that version. The B & W hard copy will be
snail-mailed to the others on or about April 13th.

Our front page article by R. R. King is based upon his research of Australian
newspapers from the summer of 1927 when Radio Station 5CL faked a military
invasion of Port Adelaide which startled the bulk of its listening audience.
Not to be outdone, another Australian station one week later, aired a bogus
journey to Mars in a rocket with equal results. (Note that this was eleven
years before Orson Welles would pull a similar stunt over [removed] network
radio.)

Can't remember the difference in radio ratings between Crossley, Hooper, and
Nielsen? John Abbott straightens it all out for you in his entertaining
piece: "Caught With Your Hooper Down." Another lengthy article explains how
to access many vintage OTR magazines content through the website of the Media
History Digital Library. And yes, it's all free, you can log on with no
password and the magazines can be searched by name or phrase.

Kathleen O'Reilly explains how the MWOTRC was invited to put on a sound
effects demonstration and a western re-creation for the annual "Grandparents
University" at Michigan State University in Lansing. This annual event brings
grandparents and their grandchildren to bunk together, have meals on campus,
and attend dozens of classes covering a variety of skills, sports, hobbies,
etc. This 2013 get-together is the third week of June.

Shorter pieces explain how soap operas passed a general morality test by
prominent physicians in 1943, how they're celebrating the 100th anniversary
of Grand Central Station and how the radio series based on it was involved,
and also why everything in the Library of Congress audio archives will not be
on YouTube next week.

Cort Vitty lists the 1934 superstitions of radio performers and a mini-bio of
"Rochester", compliments of Ryan Ellett, is set forth. All this, plus letters
to the editor and details on all upcoming OTR events, conventions, and even
an OTR cruise.

If you haven't asked for a free copy of RADIO RECALL in the past year, you
are entitled to request this issue in PDF format by emailing the editor with
your name and hometown, to give us an idea of how widespread the response
might be. BUT BEWARE: last time we made this offer, four requesters were so
entranced by the issue, they immediately went to our web site and subscribed
to RADIO RECALL. So if you can't spare the $ 15 to subscribe, don't throw
yourself into the pit of temptation.

Kenneth Clarke asked about where episodes of "I Deal in Crime" might be
found. Apparently, there are only a few surviving episodes of this
program. I have but three, but I'll happily share them with Kenneth or
others who might have an interest in this program.

You can download load them using this link:

Mr. Clarke,

I have one on a cassette but cannot recall how or from whom I acquired it.
1/26/46 concerns Laura Shields (Lurene Tuttle) who comes to Dolan for help.
William Gargan is Dolan and my research shows the series ran from 1/21/46
to 10/18/47, sustaining on ABC.

So this kid sees my wife Kathy getting out of our car with the Jack Benny
plates, and he says, "Does your license plate say Jack Benny?"

And Kathy says, "Yes, but you're too young to remember him, aren't you?"

And he says, "Nahh. I know all ABOUT the Rat Pack."

Subject: 1966 Dream World Series

This was a computer generated world series broadcasted in 1966 which matched
the best players from the American League against the best from the National
League. The series used the best players of all time, (to that point). Les
Kiter announced the games.

Does anyone know about these broadcasts including where one might get them?
Thanks.

Best,

Michael Hingson
