Subject: Page dropping my ---.
I havent posted in quite some time, mainly due to being laid up with dental
surgery, and a massive home alteration project. But I have been lurking, and
just couldn't let this posting go by without a comment.
David just posted.
I am reading an interesting book about OTR called "Great American Broadcast"
(pub 1997) by Leonard Maltin. (SNIP)
Bob Hastings and I had lunch with Leonard Maltin one day at a SPERDVAC
Convention. He seemed like a decent sort, and not one prone to make stuff
up. I think he was researching his book at that time. David, isn't amazing
how BS rumors get spread?
I notice on page 120, he quotes Adele Ronson who stated that "Alot of people
dropped pages on the floor as they finished". I am not sure of her
background or when she worked in the field.
I am very familiar with Adele [removed] [removed] when she worked
in the field. Adele was a contemporary of mine in NY Network [removed] think
we will now have to refer to her as Addle brained Adele. I worked with her
on many, many occasions, on many different radio shows. I NEVER ONCE SAW HER
DROP A SINGLE PAGE ON THE [removed] EVEN BY ACCIDENT!
(SNIP) but having slipped and fallen due to paper left on a hard floor, I
can
not see why any studio manager would allow this to occur unless an actor had
their own work area and did not move far from the mike.
David, you are obviously a bright young man, (or old man). Take your pick.
However, in the NBC & CBS Network radio studios, the Stage areas around the
microphones were carpeted. Consequently, slipping on a dropped piece of
paper laying on hard surface was not a consideration. But footsteps were.
Even the small platform I had to use to reach the mic (when I first started
in radio was a very young kid) was carpeted.
To put an end to this folly, and my strange irate reaction whenever I hear
this sort of misinformation, let me finish by [removed]
I NEVER SAW ANY ACTOR, OR ACTRESS, (IN THE 15 YEAR PERIOD BETWEEN 1939 TO
1954 THAT I WAS ACTIVE AS A RADIO PERFORMER) EVER, EVER, DROP A PAGE.

Subject: RE: Programs I Don't Get
I think Mr. Torch is making the mistake of judging 50 year old programs by
todays standards. At the time, these programs were popular because the
standards at that time were a lot different then today (thank God).
Certainly you can't judge movies or tv shows or for that fact even broadway
shows from 40 or 50 years ago by todays standards. I was lucky enough to
have been around at that time & heard most of those shows when originally
aired & yes some do sound kinda corny, but at the time I thought they were
great. Just listen & enjoy.

Subject: Kitty's employment
It was alleged, on Radio, that Kitty was a prostitute
along with being a saloon gal. So her employment was
every where.

Subject: Arthur Godfrey
As a youth in Germany, I enjoyed the Arthur Godfrey show on AFRS very much.
Thank you, Lee Munsick, for sharing your thoughts and knowledge on Arthur
Godfrey with us. After all the critical opinions uttered on this great
performer lately, your remarks are refreshing. Thanks for the memories!

Subject: Stan Freberg
1957 - Funnyman Stan Freberg debuted a new weekly comedy program on
CBS beginning this night. The Freberg show only lasted a short time and
that newfangled contraption, television, was blamed for the show's
quick demise.
The show was only supposed to be a summer replacement, as I recall. It replaced the Jack
Benny Program for the summer, with Jack Benny returning in the fall. The fact that Jack
Benny's radio program was in reruns at that time didn't stop CBS from taking it off the air for
the summer, just as they had done when it was new material.
