Subject: Orson on "Cold Case"

I never watch the current CBS television show "Cold Case" but my wife
talked me into it tonight, claiming that Orson Welles' 1938 program
"War of the Worlds" was central to the plot.

We watched it together, she trying to figure out who the killer was
and yours truly sifting through the 1938 flashbacks, trying to spot
any obvious mistakes. I found none; it appeared to be an accurate
representation of what the [removed] experienced during this famous hoax.

For those of you who missed it, there will be other chances in re-
runs to view it, especially if the writers' union strike goes forward
at midnight tonight as planned.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Two of my favourite "golden age" passions -- radio and comic books -- have
once again crossed paths.

One of my all-time favourite comic-book series was DC's Justice Society of
America, which I have taken to call "a thinking man's Justice League." For
those unfamiliar with the concept, the Justice Society was a super-hero team
comprised of characters from other series who teamed up to take on WWII-era
menaces far too larger for any one hero to handle.

In recent yeras, DC Comics has been publishing hardbound "Archives Editions"
of the JSA 1940s adventures which originally appeared in the pages of
"All-Star Comics." I just bought their latest offering "The JSA All Stars
Archives, Volume 1," which features original solo stories featuring some of
the Society's lesser lights -- Hourman, Doctor Mid-Nite, Wildcat, Johnny
Thunder, Mister Terrific (not at all connected to the 1960s TV-hero of the
same name), and the original versions of The Atom and The Red Tornado.

In the textual "historical wrap-around" material, OTR figures into a couple
of places. Comic book writer/historian Roy Thomas conjectures that the
creators of the blind hero "Doctor Mid-Nite" probably opted for the alternate
spelling "Mid-Nite" on account of radio aviator "Captain Midnight" and a hero
known simply as "Midnight" at the lesser-known Quality Comics imprint.

In the artist biographies section, the background for Irwin Hasen (who is
still with us), the artist best known for the Golden Age Green Lantern, the
aforementioned Wildcat, and the syndicated comic-strip "Dondi," there's a
mention that Hasen enjoyed "a brief foray into newspaper strips in the
mid-1940s (drawing an adaptation of the radio series 'The Goldbergs)'..." I've
heretofore enever heard of this version of "The (Rise of) The Goldbergs."

Students?

I've met many folks in the OTR hobby who also specialise in comic-books and
comic-strips. Would anybody be able to lend some further background to this
version of "The Goldbergs"?

Thanks in advance from the four-coloured ether--

Derek Tague
