Subject: April Issue RADIO RECALL

The April 2014 issue of RADIO RECALL went out on April Fool's Day in
full-color PDF via email to those subscribers who prefer that venue. The B &
W hard-copy version will be snail-mailed to the others on or about April
13th.

This issue contains the maximum number of April Fool's items allowed by OTR
tradition. But the majority of the 12 jam-packed pages are devoid of such
frivolity. We lead off with a fascinating piece by YTJD expert John C. Abbott
who reveals that a famous "Johnny Dollar" series was based on a real 1933
case. Jack Johnstone borrowed the facts about the death of Mike Malloy who
was killed (after umpteen attempts) by gangsters for his insurance money.

H. Jack Daniels carefully documents the affect of "liquid courage"
demonstrated by Edward R. Murrow and his listeners in WW II. What Georgie
Gobel was doing on radio, long before his TV success, is explained in the
April issue.,

OTR researcher Cort Vitty delves into recent history and rescues from
relative obscurity the fabulous career of Gert Niesen. An exceptional singer
and impersonator, she was termed "the exotic personality of the air" by Rudy
Vallee. She was equally successful on Broadway, logging 822 performances of
"Follow the Girls" in the 1940s with co-star (and not-so-well known) Jackie
Gleason.

Mark Anderson devotes an article to the story of Josiah Ambrose French, a
frontier fighter whose heroic tale was dramatized on "Cavalcade of America"
with Kenny Delmar and Ruth Hussey in the leads. James Peyton, an author found
in virtually every OTR publication this month, discusses the broadcast
history of the 15 minute horror program, "The Strange Dr. Weird" which Mutual
aired 1944-45.

In the "truly unusual and remarkable" category, subscribers will read about
the dirigible from Lakehurst, NJ, lost in a fog in 1924 but rescued by the
listeners of WOR. The other item reveals that Marconi, whose invention of the
wireless allowed the Titanic's SOS to summon help, would have also died on
that ship had not a last-minute change in his plans occurred.

All this, plus letters to the Editor and news of all OTR upcoming events. To

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 115

THE PHLCO SUMMER HOUR: "THE KING OF JAZZ: PAUL WHITEMAN"

Paul Whiteman, his orchestra, Eileen Woods, Bob Johnston, the Four
Chicks & Chuck, and the Radio Hall of Fame Chorus entertain on this show
from September 10, 1944. Announcer Glen Riggs introduces the musical
numbers on the Blue Network, along with newsman George Hayes who, about
half way through the show, brings listeners up-to-date on happenings in
the World War II European and Pacific theaters. The new audio clarity of
FM is extolled, which reminds me of how my little FM Philco radio helped
me keep my sanity in graduate school in the late 1950's.

Paul Whiteman on the Philco Hour show is featured this time on Classics
& Curios because the promised Benny Goodman Fitch Bandwagon show's audio
has technical difficulties. Benny, of course, was often called "King of
Swing," and Paul to himself and to his fans was "King of Jazz" and a
pioneer in American music with his blend of jazz and classical idioms.
King or not, Paul provides some outstanding music for us, such as "Lady
Be Good," "Lover," and Paul's saxophonist Vernon Brown (who also played
for Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and others) leads a super RRswinging
version of "Dear Old Southland." The "King of Jazz" features some
sidemen on saxophone, French horn, clarinet, and more as they play "My
Blue Heaven," along with performances highlighting 1922 and 1944
versions of "I Never Knew."

Vocals by Johnston, Woods, and the Four Chicks and Chuck include "Sweet
and Lovely," "I Walk Alone," "Dance with a Dolly (with a Hole in Her
Stocking)," and "I'll Be Seeing You." A special highlight is a Hoagy
Carmichael medley with Eileen, Bob, the Chicks and Chuck, and the Chorus
as they do "Old Rockin' Chair," "Georgia," "Lazy Bones," and the classic
"Stardust."

More memorable moments come as Bob and the Radio Hall of Fame Chorus do
a moving rendition of Peter De Rose's "God Is Ever Beside Me," with
lyrics by Florence Tarr emphasizing God's available strength and how His
voice can sing in our hearts. De Rose composed some of the highest
charted songs of the 1930's and 1940's, such as "When Your Hair Has
Turned to Silver," "A Marshmellow World," "Deep Purple," and "Wagon
Wheels." He also performed for fifteen years on NBC's "Sweethearts of
the Air."

Hi folks,

working freelance for German NPR (some of you know me from the very last FOTR
convention) I'm considering to do a radio documentary on the MARCH OF TIME
radio program on behalf of Orson Welles' 100th birthday next year.

What I'm looking for:
collectors/experts of/on this particular program
experts on Welles' work on this program
audio copies of this program
any written sources on this program

any help will be highly appreciated!

because I'm checking my [removed] mail account only once in a while I'd be
happy if you'd rather contact me under blees@[removed]

thanks

Christian

Subject: Mitch Miller/Rudy Vallee

I think I made a similar inquiry ten years or so ago and nobody furnished any
information. Trying again.

In the fifties, CBS Radio had a late Sunday afternoon conversation program
featuring Mitch Miller. Either as a substitute, or taking over as the host
after a few years was Rudy Vallee. Witty, literate programs with song
writers, novelists, comedians, [removed] any of these shows available?
