Subject: need 7-inch METAL takeup reel badly
I know this isn't a classified site, but I desperately need help on finding
a metal 7-inch takeup reel (or even more than one). I have some squealer
reels that need to be baked, and I only have plastic reels.
Please contact me if you have one or more 7 inch reel metal takeup reels
that I can purchase. I'd REALLY appreciate it. I release a lot of rare
and uncirculated shows from ETs that I own and this would be a huge help to me.
Thanks,
Travis

Subject: AUDIO DC RECORDING
02-23-08
Ross Butler inquired about an audio CD recorder. Prhaps he already has
one. Many Cd-burning computer programs - such as Roxio - have facilities
for taking WAV files and automatically burns them onto a CD as CDA files
(the format used by commercially-produced music CD's). To record on the
computer, use the LINE audio input, and record as a WAV file. MicroSoft
gives you one with any version of Windows, but it only records for 60
seconds at a time. There's a freebie on the web called Audacity,
however, that does just about everything but cure cancer. (That may be a
premature statement ... I haven't explored all of it yet.) You have to
set your own volume, as I don't *think* it has an AVC feature, so don't
over-modulate.
When you record as a WAV, there are fidelity and mono/stereo
specifications that you have to select. Roxio will handle just about any
of them, as far as translating to CDA goes, but there are CD-burning
programs that are fussier as to what you fed them.
Regards,
Jim Arva
[ADMINISTRIVIA: The original question specifically referenced stand-alone CD
Recorders, not computer software - I'd really prefer not to get the Digest
bogged down in instructions on how to use computer audio processing software,
burning software, etc. It isn't that I personally have no interest in this
[removed] instead of taking up space with this here, let's do it off-list.
By the time you read this, I will have posted a blog entry on the topic to
the Nostalgic Rumblings blog at [removed] - you can see my
thinking on this, and join a public discussion there. Of course, private
comments pro/con/ambivalent on this or any other Digest content issue are, as
always, welcomed and encouraged - to me directly, please (address and links
in the footer of every issue of the Digest so you'll always have them handy).

Subject: CD recorder
Russ,
I have abandoned consumer CD recorders in favor of professional or
"prosumer" models. In addition to being better built, they also accept
normal CD-R media, and don't need the higher priced "music" CD-Rs.
The model I currently own is the TASCAM CD-RW900, and I can heartily
recommend it. I paid around $500 for it, but I think it's worth every
penny. Sony also makes excellent pro models, but the price can be much
higher (closer to $1000). Lots of other pro models from HHB, Marantz, and
others are out there. I have used recorders from all the manufacturers that
I have mentioned. All have their pros and cons.
The pro models should also have better analog to digital converters onboard,
which is critical when digitizing analog tapes and records.
The TASCAM is available at most online professional electronics dealers (B&H
and others) and also from your local professional recording store. I bought
mine from Tape Warehouse in Atlanta, GA.
Happy recording,
Sammy Jones

Subject: Re: Hindenburg & American Airlines
Alan Bell queried:
I seem to recall reading somewhere that Herb Morrison
was covering the Hindenburg landing at least partly as
a promotional tool for American Airlines, which at the
time was boasting that it had great connections with
the dirigible. Unfortunately I don't remember where I
saw this. Can someone either confirm that I'm right or
that my marbles have gone missing?
There is nothing wrong with your marbles.
Coverage of the arrival of the Hindenburg on the first anniversary
of its flights to the US was arranged as a promotional event by American
Airlines, which booked reservations for the Hindenburg, made connections
with the dirigible and (as Herb Morrison mentions prior to the
explosion) had several planes waiting at Lakehurst, NJ to carry
passengers on to their final destination.
Herb's relationship with AA was central to what is considered the
most famous eyewitness account in the history of radio. During floods
in the midwest in 1937, Herb Morrison went aboard a flight that the
airline arranged for reporters to view the devastation. Herb's appeals
on the WLS "Dinner Bell Hour" brought in thousands of dollars in flood
relief and officials at American Airlines were so impressed that they
invited him to come to Lakehurst to witness the arrival of the
Hindenburg. Herb then suggested a novel idea, that WLS record the
arrival and interviews with Chicago-area passengers as a possible
feature on "The Dinner Bell Hour". Herb was also an aviator and had
worked for an aircraft company before going into radio, and was
well-versed in aviation issues. The station teamed him with engineer
Charles Nehlsen and AA provided a special flight for the men and their
equipment.
So American Airlines was instrumental in the Hindenburg broadcast,
flying Herb and Charlie to Lakehurst and, just as important, getting
them back to Chicago with the transcription discs despite attempted
interference from German agents.
