Hi Everyone,
I need to pick your collective brains. I'm looking for an OTR recreation to
do with the Gotham Radio Players which will feature a special guest star,
actor Simon Jones ("Arthur Dent" from the original radio and tv versions of
"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"). Here's what I'm searching for:
- It doesn't necessarily have to be a lost show, thought that would be a
bonus. (Obviously the script would need to be available in this case.)
- Simon has an English accent so, although he doesn't have to play an
Englishman, it shouldn't be a part in which an English accent would sound
wrong (in other words, no hard-boiled San Francisco detectives).
- Simon can play younger than his years but he's got a mature voice, so we're
looking for a story with a leading male character in, say, his 40's or older.
- Given his talents, a light comedy would be ideal. I'm not looking for a
comedy series but perhaps a lighter or comedic episode from an anthology
dramatic series. (First Nighter? On Stage? X Minus One? Radio City
Playhouse?)
- It should have a decent-sized cast, probably around 6-10 actors.
Any ideas?

I've always wondered about the name of Mr. Peavey on
"The Great Gildersleeve." While looking up a word in
Mirriam-Webster today, I accidentally ran across this
definition of "peavey": "a lumberman's lever that has
a pivoting hooked arm and metal spike at one end." And
just as I am never sure whether he was Mr. Peavey or
Mr. Peavy, the dictionary says both spellings are
acceptable.

Subject: Joe Franklin and the joke that dare not speak
its name
Joe Franklin was apparently the butt of one version of the infamously nasty
joke that makes up the film "The Aristrocrats."
Coverage from The Village Voice follows. Please note this is not
approrpriate for family reading.
According to the reporting, he took it well.

Okay, folks.
I am doing a fairly important educational survey regarding psychology and the
power of persuasion that grows from the 'theater of the mind'.
Please be honest and answer me here on digest or via private email.
Hands [removed] is the most frightening radio program you have ever heard?
The one that makes your blood run cold when you think of it. The one that
perhaps gave you nightmares.
Let me know.
Thanks,

Subject: Jeanette Nolan and Mrs. Hudson
I saw the Jeanette Nolan death anniversary the other day. It mentioned she
had played Mrs. Hudson on the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Does someone have specific information on this? From what I have been able
to learn, she, apparently, played Mrs. Hudson on an NPR production of the
William Gillette/Conan Doyle play _Sherlock Holmes_, but I can't find the
dates. She also played Mrs. Hudson on a British production intended for
American audiences in which Edward Petherbridge starred as Holmes and David
Peart as Watson. These also were broadcast over NPR, but, apparently, not
until after her death.
Can someone please provide me with details concerning any and all of Ms.
Nolan's connections with Sherlock Holmes?
Many thanks.
Bill Harker
