Subject: Re: Telegrams

One of the old jokes of the OTR period was someone would get a
telegram
called in. The operator reading the telegram would also include the
"stops," and the gag would go something like,

Operator: "Shipment arrived this morning STOP No damage found STOP Could

use another twenty units STOP ...."

Recipient (interrupting): "Young man, I don't know what you are doing,
but please cut it out while she's reading my telegram."

Stephen, thanks for the joke reference. I had to read it about two times
before it
finally hit me. I'll have to keep an ear out for that gag routine when
listening
to my OTR comedy shows. It sounds like something Jack Benny would say!

Nothing to add to the discussion lists this time [removed] But just had
to thank
you for the joke.

Warm OTR Regards,

Subject: Help Identifing A Couple Of Shows

I was wondering if someone might be able to help out identify a couple of
show titles.
1. Sgt. Blair Of The Mounties - what I can gather from the shows is that
it
is a police drama (15 min. serial type) produced sometime after the war.

2. Peter Pine - from the titles of the shows, I am guessing that it is a
mystery /drama type of show. 15 Min. format.
I have some episode numbers and show titles I have gotten from listening
to
the shows, but I have no real idea of airdates. other than a guess, who
produced them, how many exist etc. Personally, I had not heard of them so
that is what intrigued me.
Thanks
Shawn

Hmmm, well one sure way to fix the problem would be to re-record the
episode
while playing it. [removed] Open up Winamp and start the show, and at the same
time have another program recording it through your sound card at the
proper
rate.

Subject: Jump Jump of Holiday House

Jump Jump was heard on KFI, Los Angeles, and was done with the voice of
the
elf being speeded up to sound "elf-like".

The show was written by Harry and Mary Hickox. Harry was the voice of
Jump
Jump (and other voices), and Mary was "Mary Holiday". It was recorded and
heard weekly on KFI. These two were dear friends of mine, actors who had
come from Texas and Arizona to Hollywood. Harry played the anvil salesman
in the entire run of "The Music Man" on Broadway, and the same role in the
movie. They both died some years ago.

I envy George Wagner for still having his Jump Jump doll. The moths got
to
the red felt costume of mine, which Mary and Harry gave me for Christmas
one
year, and he didnt make it through my last move.

Subject: Prof. Moriarty

BTW, what was Prof. Moriarty's full name?

Professor James Moriarty, not to be confused with his brother, Colonel
James Moriarty. Their parents certainly weren't very imaginative.

Didn't he and Holmes get into a fight and fall off of a cliff (or was it
a waterfall in Africa)?

A waterfall in Switzerland (Reichenbach). Holmes did not actually
fall off, as we learn later.

Subject: Doubling

Were actors paid more for playing multiple parts, or were they paid on a
per show basis?

Actor were paid by the show, and "doubling" was standard procedure. I
have
a copy of a show with four [removed] of them a [removed] my late
husband played the parts of all three of the men. One was a youth,
another
a Mexican plantation worker, and the third the owner of the plantation -
an
American male. Three lead parts, one paycheck. Most of the time, though
the
doubles were for minor characters and miscellaneous voices on a show.

Subject: Louella and Hedda?

I am asking this of every collector and OTR fan that I know: The BBC
called me to ask if I knew whether either Hedda Hoppa or Louella Parsons
might have any living relatives, or any people who knew them-- they are
about to do a radio documentary on gossip columnists in the 30s and
40s. Also, were there any recordings/transcriptions of these two
highly-rated ladies, both of whom were around during Radio's Golden Age in
addition to writing for magazines and newspapers? I know that one of them
did a regular radio show during the 30s, and the other was a guest on a
number of shows-- have any of those recordings (if they were recorded)
survived?

I've heard a recording of an episode on The Shadow titled "The Face",
probable broadcast date 21 Sept. 1947.

Would anyone know the name of the actor playing the actor in that
broadcast of The Shadow?

***The role was played by Berry Kroeger (who briefly filled in as The
Shadow
in the early 1950s when Bret Morrison went on a vacation). Personally,
I'm
always amazed when I hear Bret and Berry in the same show. Their voices
are
incredibly similar, and I would never have cast them in scenes opposite
each
other. --ANTHONY TOLLIN***

Kenneth wrote "BTW, what was Prof. Moriarty's full name? Didn't he

The villonous professor's first name was only used once and that was
in
the Sir Aurther Conan Doyle short story classic "The Final Problem". His
name
was James Moriarty.
The place in wich the villian and the master detective had thier
historic
battle was at the Reichenbach Falls in the Alps. As far as I know Sherlock
Holms and Doctor Watson never left the Euorpean Continant on thier
adventures. Africa was never a destination in the books(wich was for what
I
understand the cannon for the radio series).

I know that Orson Wells played the professor in the British series in
the
1950's but who played him in the Rathbone series and all the others? I
know
he appeared from time to time through out the series.

I have two Holms trivia quetions to ask and that is 1. Who was the
second most used villian in the radio series? (hint: he was the second in
command in Moriarty's crinimal empire) 2. What was the professor's feild
of
study before he turned to crime? If you know the answer to these questions
then you are wothy to dwell in 221B Bakers Street, London, England. If not
well lets say that you and Inspector Lastrade are in the same boat.

Subject: GRAND CENTRAL STATION SFX GOOF

In the Grand Central Staion intro heard for many years, the SFX pulled a
goof. At the end when the train stops, you hear a definate steam sound
letting off of the engine. The goof? Their a]were no steam engines out
of
Grand Central Station. Only all Electric trains came in there. (I am
surt
it was used for dramatic effect, as people were used to that sould when a
locomotive came to a stop).

OldRadio Mailing Lists has Ed Loyer writing:

... my comments to the Digest related to the opening
for Grand Central Station, I realized that the words
could be read with a horrible subtext in the shadow
of the tragic events of September 11. I have been
troubled by my poor judgement ..... Ed Loyer

Ed, for as long as I can remember since hearing that
opening I've always been impressed by the words and
sounds they represent. The opening of a radio show I
listened to with great interest.

Your repeating them only brought to mind memories of
an earlier time I wish I could return to again.

I made no such connection as you fear your "lack of judgement"
would incite. In fact thanks for the text. Since I've misplaced
my Buxton and Owens, I no longer have access to it. (I'll
find it one of these days.)

Hopefully Nik kierniesky was correct about the level of sophistication
among modern listeners. What caused me to wonder about this was some
things I`ve read in earlier posts on the subject combined with having
actually known and heard about people who would not allow their children
(and in some cases themselves) to listen to shows with cigarette
commercials -although for some strange reason these same people often
would not seem have too much of a problem when cigarettes would be used
in a tv show or motion picture (go figure). Naturally, I would also
prefer to think that most listeners level of sophistication was advanced
enough to deal with the subject and that my concerns should indeed prove
unfounded. -Dan

Subject: For those of us who love Lucy

I just received my first edition of the I LOVE LUCY DVD collection from
Columbia House video in the mail today. I must say it beats out the video
tape collection that I subscribed to over 12 years ago from Columbia
House.
The DVD has included a section with the original openings and they have
replaced a sequence from the syndicated version of "Lucy does a TV
commercial", (the famous Vegameatavitamin episode) with scenes from the
original 1952 airing that hasn't been seen since the episode first aired.

But the thing that will be of interest to everyone on here is that
Columbia
House has included an episode of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND on the disc. That
equals out to 5 episodes instead of the 3 that are offered on the video
tape
selection also offered by Columbia House, provided each disc offers a
radio
episode. And I hope it does. Anyone out there know for sure??

I'm still playing with the disc. <G>

detectives.
A classic not to be missed. So set your VCRs!

I heard in passing on one of the network news program that portable
transistor radio are going to be dropped into Afghanistan so that the
Afghan
people can hear the latest on the Allies war on terrorism. The program
mentioned that it was a way to help them understand that it was a war on
terrorism and the Taliban and not a war on the Afghan people themselves.
Lets hear it for the value of Radio!!!!
