A Joseph Ross mentioned Hugo Gernsback.

One of my prize possession is a device that was sold by his company, The
Electro Importing Company of New York. Unfortunately, I have no idea what it
is.

It consists of two round wooden panels, about 12" in diameter, that face each
other, standing up on a wooden base. One on the panels is fixed and the
other one can slide, varying the distance between the panels. On the inside
face of each panel is a coil of what appear to be a heavy wire, about 3/16"
diameter, fastened to the face of the wood with about 3/4" between each
winding. The end of these wires have terminal connections and there is a
sliding block on the backside of each panel that is connected to one of the
terminals. Some kind of resistance test?

I've looked through some the Electro Importing catalogs I've found online but
haven't found this. It only has the company decal on it, no part number.
I'll have to get around to posting a photo of it on my web site and see if
someone can identify it.

I rescued this from a the clean out of a high school physics lab, along with
some other gems, before they ended up in the local landfill. Back in the 40s
the school had a radio club run by the physics teacher and this was part of
their equipment.

Vince
