I found out 3:00 Sunday that the Cincinnati Hotel closed it's doors.

I went north and found another one. The new one is the Lexington hotel.

[removed] for reservations. It's a smaller hotel, but the space for the
convention is larger. I have a postcard I mailed out today to everyone on my
list with information about the hotel and a map.

The hotel has undergone a [removed] million dollar renovation. I has a indoor
Olylmpic size pool, whirlpool, complimentary continental breakfast,
microwave, refrigerator, and coffee/tea maker in each room, and complimentary
high speed wireless internet access.

Along with out usual guest we are having Eddie Carroll this year. For those
who don't know him he does Jack Benny, and looks like him. If you want more
information and one of our flyers or one of the postcards with map call
[removed] or email

I'm sure anyone who has gone to the old hotel will be too.

If you haven't been to a Cincinnati convention this would be a good year to
attend one.

Kenneth Clarke asked, "I can't remember any programs he (MacMurray) was in on
OTR. He must have
done some work on programs such as "Lux Radio Theatre", "Suspense",
and similar programs. Are there any programs in which he performed which
you would suggest?"

Kenneth,

I'd suggest you consult the index of your copy of Dunning's "On the Air."
You'll find MacMurray's name connected with several pages of that text.

And yes, he was in at least one of the shows you mention.

Subject: ReTtranscriptions

In issue #52 Bob Jennings suspected, incorrectly one hopes, that because of
mp3 and the Internet, that nobody would be in a position to buy a
transcription collection.

I doubt Bob, that that would be correct.

Whilst I personally would not be rushing out to buy a collection of Ogg Son
of Fire, I am sure others would.

I however would and do, rush out to buy Australian Transcriptions and even
audio copies if the owner wants to retain the discs. Not everybody prefers
mp3. There is no doubt that circulating copies of programs can devalue the
discs, but it doesn't mean that nobody would buy them. I don't know what
your friend paid in the 1970's but I would be surprised if he couldn't make
a profit on them now. Even if an individual could not afford to buy the
discs, there would be groups of people such as the OTR Researchers group
which would pool resources, as well as other collectors.

If any collectors have Australian Discs or low gen audio, I am in the market
to purchase them. If the collection is huge and beyond my financial
capabilities I would approach other collectors to share in the costs and the
results. If the collection is super huge I would approach sponsors. I
certainly would not want any collector to feel the collection should be
destroyed or buried as worthless and I cannot see [removed] Transcription
Collectors being any less interested to purchase a worthwhile collection.

This is a subject that is probably going to be raised time and time again as
collectors age. Costs of retirement and aged care will make selling a
collection something of a necessity unless one is independantly wealthy.
Don't leave it to the last minute to negotiate a price, plan years ahead to
get your price and to allow the purchaser to raise the money.

Subject: Recycled plots

Script writers often recycled plot material from previous series for newer
ones. Yes, it was a cheat, but an efficient way to create a plot for a new
radio script that they hoped listeners would not recall and thus pay the next
bill that came in. I don't think a script writer reused any plots so soon for
radio listeners to remember or catch on.

MURDER AT MIDNIGHT featured scripts previously dramatized for INNER SANCTUM
MYSTERY.

Some scripts for THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER were also reused for THE SEALED BOOK
and MURDER BY EXPERTS.

Two INNER SANCTUM scripts that I know of were reused for BARRIE CRAIG.

One script for TALES OF FATIMA was later reused for SUSPENSE.

"Nobody Loves Me" with Peter Lorre, 1945 SUSPENSE was also used for MYSTERY
IN THE AIR a few years later with Lorre reprising his role.

ROMANCE in the mid-late fifties reused scripts from ESCAPE and SUSPENSE.

At least one THIN MAN script was reused for MR. AND MRS. NORTH.

Happened so often I could continue for the next hour, even pointing out how
the script writers would retitle the scripts, and even change the fictional
characters like the THIN MAN example but retain most of the script for the
re-write.

I think the digester picking out Bob Bailey (of Johnny Dollar fame) in The
Birdman of Alcatraz is correct, from the pictures I've seen of Bailey.
However, the dialogue sounds like it has been redubbed, and may not be his
voice. I am no expert in filmmaking and I may be mistaken. It's funny to hear
Lancaster's character call him "son," though.

Subject: Re: How did Mercedes McCambridge pronounce her

Hello again --

I haven't seen any answer to the question Bob Hicks posed here last week
about the way Mercedes McCambridge pronounced her first name. I fished out
my old tape of Chuck Schaden's interview with her (around 1970, perhaps) and
when he referred to her as Mur-SAY-dees she didn't correct him, so he was
either right or she was very polite. Born and raised in Joliet, Illinois,
she probably pronounced it as Chuck would, and as I would, both being native
midwesterners. Of course, come to think of it, some people in the west
Chicago suburbs where I live refer to Joliet as Jaw-lee-et. So never mind .
 .
Actually, the main reason I'm writing is to mention that Ms. McCambridge
talked about her time working at Chicago radio stations early in her career,
and that her all-time favorite program there was Vic and Sade! That gives
her something in common with Tony Randall, who said the same thing.

Subject: Subject: (Don't) Share and (Don't) Share alike?

Why couldn't the friend donate the discs to one of the nonprofits that is
transcribing old disks to CD or MP3? This could make the material available
in inexpensive reproductions or downloads from the internet archive or
similar sites to share the programs with everyone and claim a tax deduction
to recoup some of the cost?

It seems that now is the time for all available material be made available to
all of those in the hobby as well as potential newcomers to give OTR the best
chance for growth. Many have generously shared old shows that have made it
possible for many others to enjoy them and help keep OTR alive. If hoarded,
for no good reason, any such material runs the risk of being lost forever
instead of being enjoyed by the present and future generations.

Subject: Art Linkletter Profile in The Wall Street Journal

Radio and TV legend Art Linkletter is profiled in today's Wall Street
Journal. Who knew he has become a right-wing political activist in his old
age?

I believe this link will work for non-subscribers but it was on page D7 of
the March 11 edition if not.
