Subject: Hotels for conventions

I know this has been mentioned before but it never hurts to post a reminder.
Conventions like the Cincinnati OTR Convention, SPERDVAC, MANC, etc. all have
an agreement with the hotel. The rental of the rooms where the recreations
and vendors and seminars are held cost a set fee, and that fee is at a higher
rate if the hotel is not booked with a certain number of hotel rooms
guaranteed as a result of the convention. So when you book your room, ALWAYS
make sure you are informing the hotel staff when you book your room AND when
you check in (in case you got a cheaper rate on-line) so they can mark your
room down for the convention. Example: If the hotel has 200 sleeping nights
in the hotel as a result of the OTR Convention, the room rentals for the
events and vendors is MUCH cheaper. Thus, staying at the same hotel where the
event is held is supporting the event. Seeking a motel down the road may save
you a few bucks, but can come back to hurt the convention organizer,
financially.

Sometimes I find a cheaper rate through [removed], etc. But in those cases I
ALWAYS tell the staff at the front desk when I check in that I am here for
the convention and ask, "now I am marked down as coming in for the
convention, right?" It's a click of a button on their computer and helps
support the convention.

[ADMINISTRIVIA: Not every convention works this way, although many do. Check
with your convention organizer first if there is an option for a
less-expensive room at another local hotel. --cfs3]

For the last year, I have done a weekly half-hour old-time radio show on
a local (Champaign, IL) station for the blind. I also do a couple of
non-OTR-related podcasts, and since I have server space left over from
the podcasts, I have decided to upload my second-season OTR episodes to
the internet as I also air them on the radio station for the blind.

Basically, I simply choose a half-hour program each week, and add my own
intro and an outro. Nothing fancy, just a wide variety of OTR shows.

I'll post a new one every Monday, and the first one is up now. Please
give a listen and let me know what you think.

Just go to [removed] and click on the Old-time Radio
choice under Categories on the left side of the page.

Thanks!

[removed] Jack French has posted a marvelous conversation with Bob Hastings
and Rosemary Rice at [removed].
This was recorded at the Cincinnati convention earlier this month. Bob
and Rosemary drop names shamelessly as they remember their childhood
radio performances, and their early days in television.
