I remember thinking as a kid that this expression originated on the
TV show and migrated to the comics, in the story of that name. I think,
likewise, that PerryWhite's insistence on not being called "Chief" came
>from the TV show and appeared only rarely in the comics.
I doubt that's the case, since I am very familiar with both those
idiosyncrasies of Mr. White, and my family didn't get our first tv
until after Superman left the air. I remember distinctly when the
story featuring the actual appearance of great Ceasar's ghost was
published the very point of it was that Perry used that expression so
often. In fact, that expression was one we children sometimes
jokingly used, along with Kingfish's "Holy Mackerel!", so it had to
have appeared often in the comic book. Of course, seldom having seen
the show as a boy (only at my friend's house), I can't comment on
which medium introduced or made the most use of these traits, only
that they were very prominent in the comic. I did hear some episodes
of the radio program as a kid, but remember almost nothing about it
from that time, though, of course, I've been able to listen to many
of them since.

Subject: Re: Ovaltine
As long as we are talking about Ovaltine, does anyone remember the TV
show, Sandy Strong? I have sitting right in front of me a red mug
with the words to a song that are now almost unreadable, since
probably when I was a kid, I put the mug through the washing machine.
The song was sung to the tune of "All Around the Mulberry Bush". All
I can read is the last part.
"It's good for you and it taste so keen, You'll love its chocolate flavor".
I vaguely remember the TV show, but only by name. I can't remember
anything about it other than it being sponsored by Ovaltine.

Subject: WNIA
Hi: WNIA radio located in Cheektowaga, NY (a suburb of
Buffalo) played Midnight Mood every night at midnight.
However, they did not sign off at midnight. They
signed off at 12:30 AM. I suspect that this was due to
the fact that they were located at 1230 on the AM
dial. I was a frequent listener back in the late 50's
& early 60's. However, since I was usually listening
in my car, I did not record any of their shows. Tom
Shannon was also a favorite of mine with his show on
WKBW in Buffalo.

Subject: Rudy Vallee's Sunshine Hour
Hi,
Wondering if anyone knew about Rudy Vallee's
syndicated show - Rudy Vallee's Sunshine Hour.
They're the Fleischmann shows cut down to 1/2 hour.
Pressed on 17 inch shellac discs by MacGregor & Sollie
of [removed] The editing is extremely crude - each disc
has 3 tracks and most end abruptly with no continuity.
Even the episode numbers conflict. One says ep 2 part
2 and the other ep 3 pt 02, but they comprise the same
show. All the commercials are excised except for the
final one, and they didn't edit out the NBC
identification at the end. It was found overseas,
although I don't know if it was produced solely for
the overseas market. The one ep. that I have is
8/1/36 w. Vincent Price.
It took me a few years to get to them because my old
turntable could only accomodate 16-inch. The new
Rekokut Rondine 3 was able to take the 17-inch, no
problem, making me a happy camper.
Dates written on the sleeve pertaining to the show are
from 1938, so I guess it could have been out there as
long as that.

Subject: Grits Redux
Charlie North notes,
I was informed that a true Southerner always ate
their grits with salt and pepper. I never could quite
do that.
Arlene Osborne observes,
Grits are eaten with butter & salt and pepper.
Grits with butter and salt are fine, as they're kinda like mushy Fritos.
But pepper??
Life can get unnecessarily complicated.
