"I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again".
There are several episodes of this available on the
Streamload site.
I have a question about BATMAN's MYSTERY CLUB. I had
read that Batman and Robin never had a radio series of
their own - they simply guest-starred on the
Adventures of Superman. Today I find out that there
were two attempts to get Batman his own series. One
of which was called BATMAN's MYSTERY CLUB. The source
I read said that only one episode was made, but when I
listened to it (I got it from Streamload) it said it
was the 103th meeting of the club ([removed], the 103
episode). There was no opening and closing announcer
to it, it was just the program.
So my question is this. How many episodes of this
show were made, and why did it have the horrible
actors which it had, instead of Matt Crowley and Ron
Liss!!!!!!!

Subject: Lee Munsick: "tampering with communications"
Mr. Munsick writes about the continuing consolidation of radio & television
news sources by a few corporate owners:
While I empathize with the people
screwed by the Enron mess, I find all this tampering with communications
far more frightening for our nation at large. I for one think it's very
scary. What's anyone else think?
Lee Munsick - The iconoclast, I guess
I agree. Here in the Los Angeles area, we had one surviving
"semi-independent" TV station, channel 9, which devotes most of its
broadcast schedule to news programs, all locally produced & anchored.
It has just been sold for some huge amount of money to the Viacom
plutocracy, which already owns the local CBS Radio/TV, and Cable outlets;
under "liberalized" FCC rules we can now expect that three or four national
corporations will now control all broadcast & cable news/enternainment
content practically everywhere in the nation.
Notes:
1> Viacom promises that Channel 9's format will be "essentially unchanged".
2> We had two independent "all news"radio stations in this market. Each
station ran commercials that claimed that its format was superior to that
of its all-news rival. Then they both were bought by the same national
chain. They don't compete with each other anymore.
3> The only real "non-corporatized" TV and radio outlets in many markets
are PBS (television) and NPR (radio) stations. Conservatives in Congress
have repeatedly tried to kill both networks, contending that the "free
market" system will provide us with everything that we truly *want* in
entertainment or news, or intellectual enrichment.

Subject: Re:Harry Townes and Bio's
Roger posted:
The other day while surfing I happened to think of one of my favorite
character actors Harry Townes. So I put up a search and instantly found
a very nice bio. All these years I thought that Harry had been on radio
because of his excellent voice. The bio listed no radio.
That doesn't surprise me, Roger. I've also been doing some limited searching
to refresh my memory about some of the "characters" I worked with in radio
over the years.
It seems that "Radio Credits" don't count for much. These Bio's primarily
concentrate on TV or Motion Pictures. It's amazing how little they contain
about other performing credits, (when applicable) for the legitimate stage
as well.
So my question goes out to Hal Store seeing he was in that other medium and
may have worked with Harry. Hal did Harry ever do radio?
Sorry, Can't help you on that score. I never worked with him. Was he West
Coast?
Hal you may be interested in where I obtained the bio as your ole
working buddy Bob Hastings is listed plus many other old radio
personalities. Hal doggoneit (one word?) you were not there. I suspect
the reason being that all listed were also in movies or tv and your mug
was only on radio.
Well, your partly right. My 'Mug" was also in a number of Legit Theatre
productions, but they don't count I guess.
My good buddies from the Radio Days, like Bob Hastings, Ben Cooper, Dick Van
Patten, all continued performing, making the transition to TV and in a few
instances, Motion Pictures.
Me, I made the transition into TV production (in '56) as a Director,
(following Air Force duty and College), and concentrated solely on a very
unheralded but lucrative career Directing TV Commercials. (Don't hate me,
please).
My OTR Days spanned about 16 years. When you count the ten year span playing
"Jughead" on "Archie Andrews", and the other Radio Shows originating out of
NY, I probably did about 1,200 performances during that time. That was age 8
to about 24. I probably would have had more radio credits, but I was also on
the stage in 7 different plays. Three of them were major hits, and I
"toured" with them, traveling all over the country, therefore, during those
periods, I was not available for NY radio. I guess the total time spent away
from [removed] Radio while "touring" (between age 8 & 12) was probably 3 years.
I suppose I'm stuck with my major "Claim to Fame" as playing "Jughead" for
such a long time, although I performed on many of the "Soaps" during that
period, and quite a few well known prime time programs, but in no notable
"roles", and no other long running parts. I even did some early "Live" TV,
after NBC Converted their huge studio 8H for TV production, like "Kraft
Theatre" and "Robert Montgomery presents".
I hope this doesn't sound like I'm blowing my horn ([removed] a kazoo).
but I wouldn't want the Digest Readers to think that I was just a flash in
the pan, and I'm [removed] when I answer questions about those days.
I spent 25 years as a Director in TV in my adult years, and happily and
eagerly retired at age 50. After working in "show Biz" (in one form or
'tuther) for 46 years, I figured I had served my time in hell! It was time
to smell the roses.
That was back in 1980. I would not have re-surfaced if it wasn't for the
interest that all you fans of OTR have generated.
Anyway, the book that I'm writing about those OTR days will definitely fill
in all the blanks. With lots of "eye candy". ([removed] to those of you
who don't know that expression).
Thanks to you (and the rest of the Digest subscribers) for keeping the
Golden Years of Radio alive.
