Subject: Re: Tonto's Tribe

Hello all

Ron Sayles asked " what tribe Tonto came from?" How about the Gopher Tribe
Ron? Ever notice when camp was set up, who did it? I assume that meant
gathering fire wood. Starting the fire. Preparing the food. Cleaning up
afterwards.
When supplies were needed, who had to go to town, and lug em back to camp?
When the Ranger needed information about certain people, or things, who
always
had to put his life on the line to gather that info? When menial labor was
needed, it was Tonto who did it. Ever wonder why, if no one knew who the
Ranger
was, he couldn't take off his mask, and ride into town, and do those things
himself, or at least go with his loyal red friend, and help him.

I'd say in some ways, the Ranger was a lot like the Kingfish, and Amos on
A&A. Always putting the Native American in harms way, instead of himself. In
other words: the Ranger duped his poor misfortunate red brother into doing
things he himself did not want to do.

Subject: proof reader needed

Having written a number of books, I recently completed what I think is my
best work to date. It's been proofed and re-proofed by a number of people,
and set to go to the typesetters sometime between June 5 to June 10. In
desperation to make it even better, I am looking for someone with free time
on their hands to give it one last proof. If anyone has the free time, and
believe they can complete the task by June 5, please drop me a line.
Obviously, I will give them acknowledgement in the book and a couple
complimentary copies.

Subject: OTR Marriage this Weekend

A congradulations to Neal Ellis, who got married on the afternoon of Friday,
May 16. Everyone who has ever attending the Cincinnati OTR Convention or the
Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, knows Neal is a die-hard for JFK
Assassination coverage, Edward R. Murrow, and offers MP3 shows on DVD. In the
past year, neal has been broadcasting "live" from the old-time radio
conventions, and hosts "Sounds Like Yesterday" on the YESTERDAY USA network.

JoAnna, his wife, has tagged along with him at the conventions, so the
blushing bride is well-known to many. Their reception was held Saturday
afternoon on May 17. Next time you see Neal and/or Jo, wish them
congradulations! ([removed])

Oh, on May 17, Neal's radio program is a salute to his wedding day, featuring
anniversay and wedding-related episodes of FATHER KNOWS BEST, THE LIFE OF
RILEY, CLAUDIA, FLASH GORDON, BABY SNOOKS, THE MARRIAGE and FOUR STAR
PLAYHOUSE.

Subject: Ed Wynn and Alien vs. Predator?

My wife and I watched two movies this past weekend, each with old-time radio
references in them. The second may be a stretch, but I am curious . . .

THE MAN WITH BOGART'S FACE (1980) A spoof on the hard-boiled crime
thrillers, with references to radio plots from THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE
and the following radio programs and personalities are referenced as well:
Jack Benny, Fred Allen and Mr. District Attorney.

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM (2007) The sequel to the previous Alien vs.
Predator movie. Maybe it's me, but there was a scene in a cafe where Sheriff
Morales is talking to a friend. His first name is ED and in the background
hanging on the wall is a Texaco Fire Chief sign. If this was a coincidence,
it's pretty big. Texaco is a trademarked name and brand so the producers
would have cleared permission from Texaco to feature the sign on the wall, so
I suspect there is a connection. Just a passing thought with too much OTR on
my mind . . .

Subject: Tonto's Tribe

A reader asked, does anyone know what tribe did Tonto come from?
Tonto's famous nickname for the Lone Ranger, "kimo sabe" means "faithful
friend" in the Potawatomi language, so Tonto must have been a member of
the Potawatomi Tribe, according to "Raised on Radio," by Gerald
Nachman, New York, Pantheon Books, 1998, p 197.

Subject: Tonto's tribe

Our resident expert birthologist and necrologist Ron Sayles asked about
Tonto's tribe. He was a Pottawatomi. I base this on the adventure
entitled (if I recall correctly) "The Iron Horse," in which Tonto saves
the life of a wounded Indian -- Fleet Foot, I believe. I don't have the
adventure readily at hand, and I hope I'm recalling accurately.

Get-umup, Scout! (Pottawatomi, no doubt, for "Giddyup.")

By the way, I'm still looking for a script for the Lone Ranger adventure
entitled "Telescope Clue," if anyone knows where one might be found.
Feel free to e-mail me off-list. I'll be out of town for several days,
but thanks just the same.

Subject: Story origins

I am seeking the plots to the following stories written during the 1930s, 40s
and 50s. Story origin such as magazine name and issue would be wonderful.
These have eluded me, and a few friends who have done their own searches.
Anyone able to help?

Subject: Tonto

Ron Sayles wondered about Tonto's tribe. According to "Woman of Courage",
April 5, 1950, Tonto is a Potowatamee Indian. Many Ranger episodes feature
Chief Thundercloud as a friendly Indian chieftain who helps the masked man
and Tonto. Some of the programs indicate that Thundercloud is Tonto's
tribal chief, but they don't identify the tribe.
