I believe James Lipton (Dan Reid) should also be mentioned as a "survivor".

Subject: Reid between the lines

Joe Salerno asked if there were any remaining living cast members of "The Lone
Ranger." The ones I can think of were mostly "juveniles" during the late
1940s/early 1950s: Richard "Dick" Beals and Elaine Hyman, who were both
panelists on a panel I produced and co-hosted at FOTR in 2000, viz. "A
Humorous
Look at The Lone Ranger." Fred Foy was also enpanelled along with leading LR
authority/Digest subscriber Jim Nixon. Said panel was originally designed to
play all the Ranger parodies we could find but since we had three actual
players
on the panel, co-host Nixon and I decided not to go for comprehensiveness and
to
concentrate largely on first-hand anecdotes courtesy of the panelists (the
first
casualty of time constraints was the Lenny Bruce routine "Thank You, Masked
Man").

Ms. Hyman recently played "Molly McGee" in Gary Yoggy's re-creation of "FM&M"
starring Arthur Anderson as "Fibber"at FOTR 2010. Mr. Beals, one of several
young actors to play the Ranger's nephew "Dan Reid." is still with us as is
James Lipton, curremtly the dean of the Actors' Studio at New School
University
in NYC and who is best-known as the host of the Bravo network's "Inside the
Actors' Studio." Lipton has also been reported to have played Dan Reid.

OTR convention guest Paul Carnegie was a "Kato" for WXYZ's "The Green Hornet"
as
was Casey Kasem. I think the two of them might've taken turns as Dan Reid but
I'm not sure. Being at Wyxie, I imagine Messrs. Kasem and Carnegie might've
shown up in incidental roles on "the Lone Ranger."

Let's not forget "Hornet" announcer Myron/Mike Wallace who according to
historian Nixon once played a bad guy on the LR circa 1940.

Hi-ho, Silver!

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Dear Friends:
I have been intrigued by a wonderful article written by Lou Dumont,
appearing as part of the on-line OTRCAT website, concerning the career of
Fanny
Mae Baldridge. Fanny Mae appeared frequently on shows created and written by
my grandmother, Ethel Park Richardson. Mr. Dumont, with whom I am not
acquainted, focuses on one such series, bThe Wayside Cottageb (aka bThe
House
Beside the Roadb).
My grandmother created bThe House Beside the Roadb in 1928, and it
appeared for 13 weeks in early 1931 on New Yorkbs WABC, which was CBSb
outlet
at that time, sponsored by the American Mutual Liability Insurance Company.
Bill Adams and Leslie Bingham were featured as characters known only as
bPab
and bMother,b who lived in a cottage by the side of the road, and who
helped passers-by to resolve their problems. The power of sheer goodness
which seemed to emanate from that cottage succeeded in reuniting husbands and
wives, parents and children, and estranged friends or neighbors. The problems
of everyone who paused for a dipper of cool water from the stream which
flowed beside the rustic cottage seemed to unravel favorably under the gentle
guidance of the elderly couple.
N. W. Ayer brought the series back in late summer, 1932, as a
three-times-per-week early evening quarter-hour show on New Yorkbs WOR.
Sponsored by
Kopperbs Sea-Board Coke Company, the program was now entitled bThe
Wayside
[removed] Bill Adams and Vivia Ogden were featured as bPab and
[removed]
In later years, Bill Adams reminisced about being unable to accept the
lead role in bJust Plain Bill,b because its time-slot conflicted with
bThe
Wayside Cottage,b in which he was then starring. Many of my grandmotherbs
friends were heard in the series, including Fanny Mae Baldridge and Anne
Elstner. Brian Donlevy played a shady character in the opening installment,
and
child actors Billy Halop, Walter Tetley, and Jimmie McCallion appeared
from time to time. To augment her income during the Depression, my
grandmother
played parts in many episodes, too. bThe Wayside Cottageb drew more fan
mail than any other series she ever did.
My question is this: Mr. Dumont states that this show was bheard in 1932
and 1933 by listeners of WOR (New York), WGN (Chicago), WLW (Cincinnati),
and WXYZ (Detroit). Within three years, these pioneer radio stations would
become part of the newly-formed Mutual Broadcasting [removed] I was
completely unaware of this possibility, and always believed bThe Wayside
Cottageb
was strictly a local WOR program. Can anyone verify its wider
dissemination via that group of stations?
When my grandmother began her NBC series, bHillbilly Heart-Throbs,b she
stopped the WOR program. It returned as a summer replacement on CBS in 1934,
again with Bill Adams and Vivia Ogden. CBS planned to revert to the
original series title (bThe House Beside the Roadb) which had been used
by them
in 1931, but bThe Wayside Cottageb had since attracted a large audience
on
WOR. ([removed] Daily Mirror radio columnist Nick Kenny being a major fan of
the series). As bThe Wayside Cottage,b it was heard for the last time, on
CBS.
Although my grandmotherbs contract with her agent, Jean V. Grombach,
alludes to recordings made of bThe Wayside Cottage,b I have never seen or
heard
of them. I do have all of the scripts preserved by my grandmother, and
have written more about this program on the [removed]
website.
If anyone can verify the appearance of bThe Wayside Cottageb on WGN,
WLW, and WXYZ in 1932-33, Ibd be most appreciative.
Best wishes and a Happy New Year to all,
Jonathan

Subject: "Green Hornet" movie
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I must admit that based primarily on the trailers, the "Green Hornet"
movie looks quite
disappointing. Of course, IMHO, this isn't the first time this has happened.
Remember a few
years ago when Alec Baldwin played the title role in "The Shadow" a movie
remake of the
radio series. Too bad that when these movies are being made, more attention
isn't given to
ensuring that the integrity of the shows remains intact. When they were on
OTR, the characters
were strong, the storylines were good, and they were memorable. Not so with
the movie
adaptations.

The trailers I've seen of the "Green Hornet' weren't at all
impressive. Apparently they decided
to use the radio series as a backdrop for comedy skits.

There was a TV version of "Green Hornet" done in the mid sixties
which, although a bit corny
had the requisite amount of character development and stayed fairly close to
the OTR version, IMHO.
This movie looks like a disaster waiting to happen!
