David Howell writes:

Frank Nelson did a well known series as the voice of
Hubert the Harris Lion for a TV commercial of a bank.
The lion was a cartoon character.

Forgive me that I've been really busy and not closely following this thread,
but I remember Frank being a spokesman for McDonalds for a while in the late
1970s, using his "Yessss" as their catchphrase du jour.

I read her biography of her dad. One thing I recall and meant to ask about

Does anyone know of the fate of his personal copies of the show?

Yup. In 1968, Jack donated these, his scripts, and a lot of paperwork,
photos, awards, and miscellaneous ephemera to UCLA. I am slowly making my way
through that collection over the course of years.

Subject: Radio Comics

Joe Mackey's latest chronology includes:

1943 - A comic strip came to radio, as Archie Andrews was heard on the
Mutual Broadcasting System for the first time.

There were other comic strips that "came to radio." Shows that
originated in comic strips included Little Orphan Annie, Smilin' Jack,
Mandrake the Magician, Buck Rogers, and of course Dick Tracy.

The only comic book that springs to mind is Superman.

Some radio programs that spun off comic books and/or strips were Jack
Armstrong, Captain Midnight, and Tom Mix. The Captain Midnight newspaper
strip was fairly close to the program; the comic book had little
relationship.

Rick Keating kept his audience riveted by observing:

But I'm not aware of any adventure, mystery, suspense,
western, detective, etc. shows mentioning characters
from another show on the network, or featuring an
appearance by [removed];<

In "The Apple of Eve Caper," a 6/19/49 broadcast of THE ADVENTURES OF SAM
SPADE, a character named Captain Psalty informs Sam that there's not much
call for a charter boat at that time of night--"There's that Novak
[removed] he's sleepin' one off." A subtle in-joke reference to PAT
NOVAK-FOR HIRE, made doubly amusing by the fact that Psalty is played by
Tudor Owen (Jocko Madigan on NOVAK) and that Jack Webb is also on this
particular Spade broadcast.

A JEFF REGAN, INVESTIGATOR broadcast from April 26, 1950 ("It All Comes Back
to Me Now") features a hospital's PA system paging a "Dr. Stephen Dana."
Dana was the protagonist of THE PRIVATE PRACTICE OF DR. DANA, and both shows
were produced by Sterling Tracy.

And there's a PHIL HARRIS-ALICE FAYE SHOW (I think it's from February 6,
1949 but I'm not 100% on that) in which Phil and Frankie are going
door-to-door asking people their opinion of the show. A gentleman named
"Andy" answers, and then turns to his friend "Amos" asking: "What's a Phil
Harris?"

Just a few of my favorites.

Chester asks Matt if they can requisition the government to buy them two
bear skins so they can carpet the jail, "So everyone won't make so much

Subject: Rochester's horses

Ken Dahl writes:

The last portion of therace summary for the horse reminded me of Jack's
Maxwell: began
fast, displayed good speed in the first half and then quit. Does anyone
know how
involved Rochester was in horse racing as a owner? Did he own other horses?

Rochester enjoyed owning various competitive items, such as horses and boats.
Here's an excerpt from a column that I included in "The Jack Benny Times"
last year:

"There is a gap of 38 years between Greene's appearance here and 1943, when
actor Eddie Anderson, who played Rochester on the Jack Benny radio and
television programs, sent a colt named Burnt Cork to the Derby. The colt was
beaten by
38 lengths, and Anderson was criticized for using the Derby for publicity
purposes, a charge he denied."

I am not aware that Anderson ever sent another horse to the Kentucky Derby.
And I'm sure the irony of the horse's name was not lost.
