Having only recently discovered Eddie Green, I'm wondering whether
there were any other black OTR sitcom regulars besides Eddie Green and
Rochester?

Well, there was Roy Glen (or was it spelled with two n's as Glenn?),
who appeared in *NUMEROUS* movies, radio, TV shows of the past
(1940s/50s era). He was an occasional on Jack Benny (both radio and TV)
as Rochester's good friend "Roy".

He was in one of the radio adaptations (Lux? NBC/Screen Directors?) of
the Hitchcock movie "Lifeboat".

After the white man who played the voice of "Beulah" (on Fibber McGee
and Molly, and then the "Beulah" show) died (I can't remember his name
offhand), I think that Hattie McDaniels took over the part. I know that
the TV version of "Beulah" (ABC-TV, 1950-53) at one time or another had
Louise Beavers, Hattie McDaniels, and Ethel Waters, in the starring
role.

Lilian Randolph played the black maid "Bertie" on Gildersleve.

And there were indeed others, especially on "Amos 'n' Andy".
While Gosden and Correll were white men playing black voices, there were
various Hollywood black actors of the day who did play the voices of
other black parts. Ernestine Wade played Sapphire Stevens and Amanda
Randolph played Sapphire's Mamma, both on TV *AND* on Radio.

I know that I recognize Roy Glen's voice on many (radio) episodes of
"Amos 'n' Andy", and he would also be the voice of a black part on
NUMEROUS dramas on radio, especially "Escape" and "Suspense" all
throughout the 1940s/50s.

I know that others will post numerous examples as well -- the ones I
mention are just off the top of my head right now.

Derek commented:

It's going to be my satellite-radio debut and I'm
excited. I just hope Walden doesn't throw me a curveball question at the
$16,[removed] level.

Derek is making a reference to his guest shot appearance in the "chair" in a
syndicated episode of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and that was the level
of question he reached. Incidentally, I've been meaning to ask - does
anyone have a copy of Derek's appearance on the show? If they do and are
attending Newark, please bring your copy so I can watch Derek hard at work -
I still haven't seen that broadcast.

Subject: Best Barry Hill Story

Okay, since everyone is telling their favorite Barry Hill story, this one
takes the cake.

Two years ago Barry and I split convention costs to attend the MONSTER BASH
convention in Pittsburgh, PA and we split a table. I sold books, Barry sold
cassettes. Barry had never attended a horror film convention so this was a
new one for him. He admired one actress from England and they struck up a
friendly conversation. He name was Carloyn Monroe (if I recall the name
accurately), who was a Bond girl in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY with Roger Moore.

Anyway, Barry had a tradition of telling jokes about people from West
Virginia. Now this is going to be a little politically incorrect and
reprinting this story is in no way against people from West Virginia. Black
people tell white jokes, white people tell black jokes so those from West
Virginia reading this please DO NOT FEEL OFFENDED. Everyone tells jokes
that are off color once in a while so no one is innocent enough to say this
is a bad [removed] Anyway, Barry told a joke and realizing he had a small
crowd of people around the table listening and laughing (including a friend
of mine from NYC named Alex), Barry began to call them up one by one on a
roll.

"Why do trees in West Virginia have no branches?"

(pause)

"Blame it on the family."

laughter

"How do West Virginians define safe sex?" he asked.

(pause)

"They brand the sheep."

After a good dozen jokes, a man walked up through the crowd, up to Barry
directly and very seriously stated "I'm from West Virginia."

Silence, afterwhich Barry replied, "So what do you think about this thing
called electricity? Isn't power grand?"

The man walked away without another word but later that afternoon, Barry
paid a visit to the man and apologized personally. Barry told me the man
accepted the apology and the two men were healed. It was Barry who told me
that to err was human, but to apologize without requiring to do so for legal
reasons or personal responsibility, represents a man with a good heart and
true intentions.

It's not what you take with you when you go, but what you leave behind that
means something.
I learned something that day that will not be forgotten.

Although it meets in the Episcopal "Little Church Around the Corner",
often called "The Actors'Church", EAG is actually a non-sectarian support
organization for members of the theatrical professions who need help.

Dear Lee, & Gang-

And the connection with OTR, and FOTR, goes FAR beyond former President Lon
Clark. Past and present members have included such folks as Arthur Anderson,
Bill Nadel, Corinne Orr, Ruth Last, Anthony Tollin (if memory [removed]), and
MANY others through the years.

It was the producer, in the Golden Age, of the recently rediscovered series

recreations, from Lon's "Nick Carter" [removed]

Pineapple juices.

Could someone please explain this?

Subject: African-American Radio Actors

Re. Derek Tague's query about African-American regular radio sitcom
performers, I am personally acquainted with the Monday through Friday 15
minute Beulah Show which aired nationwide on CBS. As a 15 year-old, I
attended many of those shows broadcast from what is now an office
building on the NW corner of Sunset Boulevard (6000 West) at Gordon St.
There were other Beulah shows, beginning with the original segment on
Fibber McGee and Molly, in which Beulah was played by a Caucasian, and a
man, at that. But I choose to focus on the Hattie McDaniel program which
I mentioned above. Unlike Amos and Andy, only black actors played black
characters. Besides Academy Award winner Ms. Daniels, her boyfriend Bill
was played by Ernie Whitman, whom I spotted later in a store and found
out that he did not live far from me. Neighbor/maid Oriole was played by
Ruby Dandridge (mother of Dorothy); she also was Geranium on the Judy
Canova Show. Later, when Hattie became mortally ill, Lillian Randolph
took over the title role. I saw the show over ten times because I loved
the humor. White actors on the show were Chicago's Hugh Studebaker and
Marvin Miller, who announced for Dreft (a P&G soap). Mary Jane Croft
was also on the show.

So, if I could get there by 3:45, I could get in and see some of radio's
finest performers. Too bad I didn't know it at the time.

CORRECTION AND APOLOGIES both to Derek Tague and to jazmaan for mixing
them up in my responses. Since I was going to respond to each of their
postings, my brain played a trick on me.

In response to Derek's inquiry into the "Our Miss Brooks" principal,
Osgood Conklin (not Conkling), as a high school teacher for the past 40
years, I think that qualifies me to agree with him that in those days,
principals did come from the instructional staff. I have heard
practically all OMB shows extant, and I don't ever remember a reference
to Mr. Conklin's teaching days. (Of course, I have already proved that
my memory is bad by mixing up the above two gentlemen, so how reliable
am I, one can ask.) The two things I can say for sure, however, are (1)
Madison High School on OMB, with all the antics that took place there,
bears absolutely no resemblance to a real high school; and (2) not all
principals nowadays are chosen from the teaching staff but are selected
rather because of their ability to polish the proverbial apple.

Subject: Another death in OTR fandom

I don't think I ever saw it mentioned here. I was surprised and saddened to
read in the October issue of SPERDVAC Radiogram that Clifff Caplinger passed
away on July 23. Chris Lembesis wrote a very loving tribute to Cliff.

Cliff was one of the early OTR enthusiasts. Chris credits him for showing
him how to transfer discs to tape back in the 1960s. I first met Cliff at
FOTR sometime in the 1990s. I believe he was a frequent attendee. He also
attended the REPS conventions regularly, as well as the Yesterday USA Family
reunions. Besides OTR he also had a passion for roller coasters.

Too often we lose touch with someone in the hobby and never find out
whatever happened to them. I didn't want that to happen to Cliff. (If anyone
would like a copy of Chris's article, let me know.)

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

The talk of clear channels got me to thinking of when I was a teenager and
would scan the dial looking for old radio shows being rebroadcast. I remember
that some powerful stations were adjacent to powerful stations from other
cities.
I had, at one time, a long, long time ago, a magazine article that listed the
network affiliations of many of the old time clear channels. Alas, I have
since lost the magazine. So, I was wanting to know if anyone out there knew
the original network affiliations of the following clear channel stations.
And in a lot of cases, their call letters during the Golden Age of OTR.

650 WSM Nashville, TN
660 WFAN New York, NY
670 WSCR Chicago, IL
700 WLW Cincinnati, OH
710 WOR New York, NY
720 WGN Chicago, IL
760 WJR Detroit, MI
770 WABC New York, NY
780 WBBM Chicago, IL
810 WGY Schenectady, NY
820 WBAP Ft. Worth-Dallas, TX
830 WCCO Minneapolis, MN
870 WWL New Orleans, LA
880 WCBS New York, NY
890 WLS Chicago, IL

Admittedly, some of these I have known at some point in time, but I am no
longer sure if my memory is correct or not. And, also, I thought some digest
readers who haven't been OTR fans for all that long might get a kick out of
knowing what network affiliates/callsigns/cities went together.

Thanks,

Bob
