The confusion of another name was mentioned recently by Danny Stiles,
who celebrated 58 years in radio this month.
One of his listeners thought Martin Block's "Make Believe Ballroom Time"
theme on New York's WNEW was "Maple Leaf Ballroom Time".

I think I've heard a few times Chrysler sponsored the "Amos 'n' Andy Music

"Music Hall" was a participating-sponsor series. Chrysler was one buyer

Motors also used the series to promote the Rambler. Other frequent
sponsors included the pharmaceutical firm Grove Laboratories and the Fram
Corporation, manufacturers of automotive filters. Most of the Music Hall
sponsors were frequent buyers across the board for CBS's late-fifites
radio product, and will be heard on many other programs from this era.

You will notice that there is no death date for Charles Lane,
there is a perfect explanation . . . he is still alive.
Not only that, but he hit the big one-double-o this year, and the AP even
sent out a picture of him, smiling and wearing a red beret, that was taken the
day of his birthday. The last thing I ever saw him do was a 1980s appearance
on
"Late Night With David Letterman."

Ted Kneebone observes, anent Rexall,
I think Rexall also sponsored the Phil Harris and Alice Faye
show.
Indeed it did. And a number of sketches involved Rexall. In one case,
Remley orchestrated a "Rexall One-Cent Sale," at Rexall store, and sold
most of the inventory for a penny per item. The "Good health for all
from Rexall" musical signature replaced an opening where Phil Harris and
Alice Faye each sang a bit from one of their songs, each.

Subject: Fibber And Molly on TV/Charles Lane
Hello:
I had been reading some back posts on the OTR Nostalgia Phorums (New
software recently [removed] improved look and navigation, btw)
regarding the ill-fated Fibber McGee and Molly NBC TV series in
[removed] I had never seen any episodes, those on the Phorums that had
basically had these criticisms: hat Cathy Lewis was especially wrong for
[removed] was quite bland compared to Marion Jordan. Hal Peary should have
played Gildersleeve rather than [removed] whole production was very
[removed] especially [removed] lasted less than a full season. I
found out as well that Jim and Marion Jordan was dead set against the show
as NBC produced it, but because NBC owned the characters, there was not much
they could [removed] wanted them to do the TV series, but they refused mostly
due to Marion Jordan's declining health. Without seeing any episodes myelf,
I think the biggest problem with the series, besides the lack of the
Jordans. was just that it was done too late in the game.
In saying all that, this is my question, If Jim and Marion could have
done a FM&M TV series, say from [removed] it have worked? I ask because
of the general layout of the half hour radio [removed] Jordans banter,
visits from Old Timer, Gildy, Teeny, Harlow Wilcox, Wallace Wimple etc. How
well could it have translated to TV? Would you have had to tweak the format
to resemble more of a "sitcom" with some of the characters showing up from
episode to [removed] would the writing hold up if you could have kept the
original FM&M
writers?
On the topic of Charles Lane:He is still indeed alive and well. He is seen
on the recently produced Petticoat Junction DVD set of the first 20 episodes
(Minus the Christmas one which is on another special DVD) in a documentary
extra sharing thoughts on his Petticoat Junction [removed] looking well
and contributing good [removed] heartily recommend this DVD set. put out
by the Paul Henning [removed] care in packaging the episodes, a lot of
good [removed] commentary by Linda Kaye [removed] especially good
but brief [removed] Benaderet appearing on a 1966 Art Linkletter
Talent-type show discussing Petticoat Junction but also doing some of her
famous radio roles for the audience.(Blanche Morton's Laugh, etc)
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a good and safe New Year

Subject: Titanic range
Bill Harris wrote:
Jack Phillips, one of the Marconi Company radio operators had been in
contact with the powerful radio station at Cape Race just a couple of hours
before the Titanic struck the iceburg.
The radio equipment on board the Titanic was the latest state-of-the art and
powered by a 5KW motor generator had a guaranteed range in any atmospheric
conditions of 250 miles, but at night reliable communications to 400 miles
was possible and even much further depending upon conditions.
This I did not know. The longest account I've read comes from a book
the New York Times published in 1951 to celebrate its 100th birthday;
among the milestones in its history, it gives the account of Marconi
and the NYT's Jim Speers getting onto the docked Carpathia and
interviewing Harold Bride. Bride gave notice that Jack Phillips had
died, but also gave an account of his call to the Carpathia. The
account does not give mention of any contact with land stations.
BTW, do White Star - Marconi transmissions count as "Ancient Time
Radio"? :-)

Subject: Bugs and Jack
A couple folks asked about the Benny Eppisode with Jack talking to Bugs?
I have it here somewhere, and I don't know the name of the eppisode, but it's
about jack coming back from a vacation in Switzerland. Every time he says
something that ends in an OO sound, he hears yodeling in his head. No one
else hears it so Mary convinces Jack to see a Psychiatrist.
While they are in the waiting room Jack talks to another patient who thinks
he's a rabbitt.
I seem to remember it's either one of the first CBS eppisodes, or one of the
last NBC eppisodes.
If folks can't find it, write me offlist and I'll take a trip down Benny Lane
and find it.
