I would suggest that you write to Chuck Schaden the host of "Those Were the
Days" for over 30 years, who knows Chicago radio history better than most,
and what Chuck doesn't known his side kick Ken Alexander knows.
If you want to hear great old time radio I strongly suggest that you go on
line on Saturdays @1 to 5 PM central time to

article on Stan Freiberg, by Stece Darnell, also an article "The Golden Age
of Chicago Radio" a great history of [removed] Alfred Balk.

Subject: Re: Boston Blackie
At 06:18 PM 8/1/2006, Larry Jordan inquired:
It surprised me to learn that Kollmar, who apparently committed
suicide in January 1971, had played "Boston Blackie" on radio for 10
years.
Of course I have heard a number of episodes of "Boston Blackie" on
such shows as "When Radio Was." But I was very surprised that Kollmar
was the actor who played the lead. I am wondering if he was the only
one to play that part, or were there others?
Boston Blackie was played by two actors on Radio.
From it's debut on 6/23/1944 until 9/15/1944 Chester Morris played
Blackie (12 episodes).
Richard Kollmar began on 4/11/1945 and continued until 6/29/1949 220
episodes later.
Chronologically:
Jack Doyle created the character and wrote several short stories that
appeared in American and Redbook magazines from 1912 to 1916. He then
gathered the stories together to publish the book 'Boston Blackie' in 1919.
The book helped make the character popular enough for Hollywood to
create 8 silent Boston Blackie movies from 1918 to 1927. The earliest
ones re-told the short stories familiar to the audience.
In 1941 Chester Morris began a series of 14 Boston Blackie movies
most of which include George E. Stone as Runt his sidekick and
Richard Lane as Inspector John Farraday. I would comment here that my
wife and I have found the movies to be very entertaining. Good moving
plots, reasonable mystery, and a good cast of running characters from
film to film.
The popularity of the movies resulted in Chester Morris getting the
part of Blackie when the radio series began. Richard Kollmar took
over in the second 'season'.
There are also 2 seasons of a Boston Blackie TV show from 1951-1953
when TV was very young. Kent Taylor played the roll in the 1/2 hour
adventure stories. I have them, but haven't watched [removed]

Subject: MP3 Player
OK, so now I have four CD-sized discs with old radio shows in MP3
format. What do I do with them? They will run on my DVD player and on my
computer, but neither one of them are very portable.
Ted,
Early last year I purchased at Walmart a Durabrand radio that plays all my
OTR MP3 disc's for $[removed] I have a Sony radio/MP3 boombox that plays about
75% of them and it cost $[removed] Some of my disc's have between 100-125 shows
on them and they all play with no problem on the Durabrand. It is also a nice
size for carrying around. 12w-8d-6h. I have purchased over 6000 programs on
dozens of disc's over the past 2 1/2 years and every show I have listened to
plays perfectly.

Subject: Greta Garbo
Hi all,
I only know of one radio recording of Greta Garbo. When she came back to
visit Sweden in 1946 (after she'd left the movies for good) Swedish reporter
Karl-Axel
Arvidson managed to ask her a few questions when she'd just gone a shore.
You can hardly hear what she answers though. I think she suffered from mike
fright.
I have that recording somewhere, but I don't know when or where I can find
it.
Whether there are any American broadcasts with her, I don't know, but I
doubt it. She was obviosly a very shy person, despite her success. Hope this
helps
you a little!
Take care!

Subject: The Mutual Network and its Ratings during the
Golding Age of Radio
August 2, 2006
Dear Old Time Radio Digest readers:
In several recent postings the subject of the Mutual
Broadcasting System and its affiliates came up.
The fact that M B S was for the most part aired on
smaller and weaker stations led me to wonder about
network's ratings through out radio's golden age.
Did Mutual ever have any radio programs in the top ten
or even the top 20? Did M B S ever lead its time
period in a four network race? When M B S aired the
popular mystery and detective programs such as the
Shadow and Nick Carter Master Detective on Sunday
afternoon did these programs boost the network's
ratings? The same question applies for the M B S
after school adventure programs especially when the
Blue/ABC Network also aired adventure programs at the
same time? When the Lone Ranger aired on M B S did it
lead in its time slot? When the Lone Ranger moved
from M B S to Blue/ABC in May 1942, did this move
boost the Ranger's ratings? Why did the Lone Ranger
change networks? Was this a decision made by General
Mills or Gorge W. Trindel or was it a Matter of Money
since the Lone Ranger was the primary reason for
Mutual's founding?
Many thanks for your help.

Subject: The Andy Griffif Radio Show and Other CBS
comidy shows during 59' and 60'
August 2, 2006
Dear Old Time Radio Digest Readers:
While listening to some C B S Radio programs from 1959
such as The Couple Next Door Yours Truly Johnny Dollar
and Have Gun Will Travel I heard some promos for B B S
Radio programs which aired week nights.
These included the Andy Griffif Show and Burns and
Allen as well as The Amish and Andy Music Hall and Bob
and Ray as part of a comity hour.
What is known about the Andy Griffif radio show, did
Andy do his standup routines such as "What It Was, Was
Foot Ball or did he perform skits written for radio
How long did his radio program run? Are their any
recordings? did it air until November 25, 1960 when
the A and A music Hall and the other C B S Radio Day
Time programs left the air? Or did the program go off
the air June 24, 1960 the day Bob and Ray left the
Air?
What is known about the Burns and Allen show which
aired on C B S Radio in 1959 and 1960 before Bob and
Ray, were these highlights from their Old Time Radio
program from the 1940s or clips from their television
show
I have also heard promos for the A and A Music Hall.
In 1958 the program aired Monday through Friday nights
and in the day time Saturdays. Did the Saturday
program air until November 1960? Was the Saturday
program a best of the week or was it a new program for
Saturday Listeners?
Many Thanks for your Help.
Jim Taylor
