Subject: Chicago's Those Were the Days Radio Players

Sean Dougherty asks if the OTR recreation in Clarenedon Hills, Illinois,
referenced in the news article he attached, was part of Chicago's Those Were
the Days Players. As a ten year member of said group's South ensemble (south
side, south suburbs and northwest Indiana) I can say, yes, Sean, they are.
We are all part of Chuck Schaden's traveling troupes of Players (eight in
total) who travel throughout the Chicagoland area performing in various
public and private venues. I believe the group mentioned in the article is
the West group.

Our South group, along with veterans from Chicago's AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio
Players, have teamed up for several years in presenting receations at Jay
Hickerson's Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, in Newark each October. We
will be pleased this year to present a great comedy show, The Magnificent
Montague on Thursday night, October 18, at the convention. For those
interested, that Thursday morning, at 10:00 [removed] at the "Radio Idol" panel
presentation, we will take volunteers from the audience to audition before a
celebrity panel of radio veterans, for a cameo part in our Montague show that
night. So come one, come all!

Jim Taylor remembers Mutual's mystery dramas during the mid to late
1950's in the dying days of network radio. The programs were

   eastern time.

One of the most complete listing of network shows is Harrison Summers'
30 year history of national radio (1926-1956) I don't have time to look
up all the Mutual evening thrillers, but here's some of the listings
for two seasons:

Season 1951-52: Black Museum 8 Tue, Crime Does Not Pay 8 Mon, ILAM
5XWeek 10:15, Mysterious Traveler 9:30 Tue, Nick Carter 6:30 Sun,
Official Detective 9 Tue, Peter Salem 7 Sun, The Shadow 5 Sun, True
Detective Mysteries 5:30 Sun, and Under Arrest 4:30 Sun

Season 1954-55: Broadway Cop 8:30 Mon, Counterspy 8 Fri, Crime
Fighters 8:30 Thr, John Steele, Adventurer 8:30 Tue, Nick Carter 4:30
Sun, Official Detective 8 Thr, Public Prosecutor 6 Sun, Sentenced 8:30
Wed, Squad Room 8 Wed, Top Secret Files 8 Mon, Treasury Agent 8 Tues,
and True Detective Mysteries 5:30 Sun.

Since the name didn't ring a bell with me I decided to Google Vera Vague and
found the following on IMDB. This excerpt is from her "mini-biography"
which runs several paragraphs.

[removed]

Comedienne/writer Barbara Jo Allen induced laughs nationwide after
originating and literally becoming synonymous with the talky, shrill-voiced,
man-hungry spinster "Vera Vague," a WWII creation in the late 1930s. She
kept the name throughout much of her career and was often billed as such.
The character, however, was to be both her fortune and her curse.

Regards to all,
