Subject: re: What's New?
In the digest, Paul asked if we're at the "end of the line" in digging out
old time radio programs and what new shows may have been uncovered in the
past year or so.
I've dug up quite a few lost and uncirculated shows in the past few
months, mainly because I'm concentrating on "odd" programs that usually
get ignored - local radio, syndicated shows from the 30s and the like. I
did manage to get a lost episode of Suspense (The Lost Special with Orson
Welles) and one that was previously incomplete (The Rescue with Jimmy
Stewart) in auctions this past year.
I think there's still more to discover out there. Network and local radio
stations and syndicators made thousands of transcription discs and there
were more opportunities for them to float into private hands than
something like 35mm films.
I think you'll start seeing more shows coming from:
-Private collectors giving up the hobby or passing away. I've talked to
several people who have discs (or know of someone that has discs) that
have never been transferred to tape or digital for one reason or another.
Some are "holding on" to them to try to sell them and keep them
uncirculated, others just have discs they haven't gotten around to
transferring to tape or digital.
-Non-radio collectors. There are some syndication discs associated with
particular sponsors, products or characters that I'm willing to bet are in
the hands of people who collect around areas like autos or comic books.
They have the disc as a collectable object with no intention of playing
it. These may start to emerge as these collectors age - I'm betting some
more episodes of the radio version of "Popeye" or episodes of "Og, Son of
Fire" might pop up this way.
-Individuals associated with radio. These folks are getting older and
retiring and may have some discs tucked away in an attic that get
unearthed. I've gotten some shows from estate sales for my blog.
-AFRS discs. I've talked to some collectors that have many AFRS discs
they haven't even played. Since these discs only contain a series name
and episode number on the disc, it's hard to tell if you have something
unique unless you do some digging. Some collectors just haven't bothered
to really go through what they have.
It takes some effort and special equipment to transfer discs. I have a
fairly small collection - maybe 300 or 400 discs - and there's probably
almost a hundred I haven't even played yet.
The past couple of weeks, I worked on transferring some uncirculated shows
that will wind up in my blog. They include episodes of "The Story
Princess", a kids show that ran on ABC; "The Magic of Music", a show about
jazz that ran on Mutual; "VE Plus 350", an NBC drama for the United Jewish
Appeal; "Home is What You Make It", an NBC show about the wonders
available for homemakers after the War; and even a local show about an
apple picking contest from KGW, Portland. Oh, and I transferred an AFRS
disc containing a Burns and Allen show from 1944 that I think is lost and
some AFRS shows called "Melody Round-Up" hosted by Lum and Abner that
aren't circulating.
Finds of the bigger shows like "The Shadow" will be few and far between,
but there's a great deal of old time radio out there left to be discovered
and documented.

Subject: The Dog that Barked
I wish to thank Martin Grams, Jr. for coming to my defense after two
Digest experts claimed since Lassie barked her own lines on radio, I
must have been wrong. However, I only said that Lassie could not read
a script, not that she didn't bark on command. Heck, even my dim-
witted dog, Bowser, can bark on command. (But he can't read a radio
script.)
Actually if dogs could read scripts, the sound men who specialized in
impersonating dogs would not have had as much microphone work,
including Dewey Cole, who was the voice of Yukon King, and Frank
Milano who impersonated both Bobby Benson's dog, Hero, and his horse,
Amigo.
The most interesting point in this thread is the original conflict
over how much a sound man was paid to imitate a dog on radio. Sound
men were usually salaried by the week, while most actors got paid for
each rehearsal and performance. Dewey Cole, who talked for Yukon
King, thought he should get paid also as an actor. WXYZ denied his
request as in their view, barking was not acting. Cole protested that
Sgt. Preston and King carried on conversations, and he had scripts to
prove this. Finally, the matter had to be settled by the union (it
was AFRA then) and they ruled in favor of Cole's claim. So Cole got
his regular salary plus an actor's fee.
There were other ways for a sound man to add to his modest weekly
salary. Commercials were greatly sought after. Jay Rendon, the
assistant sound man on "Candy Matson, YU 2-8209," told me that one
wine commercial he worked on for half a day paid him as much as his
entire monthly salary at the station. Sound men were also happy to
ingratiate themselves with the writers, who could then toss them a
line once in a while. Barney Beck, who was the assistant sound man on
"Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders," was a friend of Jim Shean, its
writer. Jim would occasionally add a "one-liner" to his script late
in the process, knowing director Bob Novak would let Barney have the
line and thus pick up an actor's fee.

Subject: Hollywood Bowl concerts
I've got an AFRS disc set I'm researching and was wondering if anyone had
any input on this.
It's called "Hollywood Bowl Series" and is a one-hour concert; it's number
78 in the series. In the show, they refer to it as "Symphonies Under the
Stars". Goldin lists a series by that name in his database.
I was wondering if the show was carried on the network, a local Los
Angeles station, or was prepared exclusively for AFRS. Goldin dates the
show in his listing to August 1948.
I've tried Googling it in several ways, but haven't turned up any
newspaper listings.
Any ideas on this one?

Subject: Beyond Tomorrow
Hello
Just catching up on many missed digests. In today's digest, Jim Widner says
..."Beyond Tomorrow"..."has never been determined it definitely aired, though
it was possible"...
I checked my log of shows that I have and I have "Outer Limit" with Frank
Lovejoy and "The Incident at Switchpath". I copied the "Outer Limit" from
When Radio Was in 1999 and I have CBS listed in the notes. "The Incident at
Switch Path" was given to me in 1988, not sure by whom, probably my neighbor.
He lists a broadcast date of April 11, 1950.
So, there are recordings. Will listen to them later to see if there is any
more info on the tapes.
