Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

suspect I know the answer to this, but I'm looking for the famous Fred
Allen
episode of April 20, 1947 in which he is cut off the air for about 30
seconds
for saying something derogatory about NBC.
I don't remember the exact date but I thought it was a different date and
Monty Woolley was the guest. IIRC (if it's the right show) it happened in
the opening monologue and I actually heard it once (even owned a tape of
it), and thought it was a defect in the recording until I read the story. Or
am I confused and thinking about a different show?

After a decade of research, I have completed writing a new book on the
life of Kay Thompson -- who began her career as a major radio singer
with Bing
Crosby and many others in the 1930s. (In 1935, she co-founded HIT PARADE
with conductor Lennie Hayton, just for starters.)
The book is called "Kay Thompson: From Funny Face to Eloise" and is being
published November 2 by Simon & Schuster.
I have just launched a website that includes extras that, because of space
considerations, could not fit in the book. These include an exhaustive,
comprehensive list of Kay's 133-and-counting radio credits! Even if you don't
know much about Kay, you owe it to yourself to check out her astounding
accomplishments.
Her lists of credits in various mediums are a work in progress, so
everyone is invited to contribute additions and/or corrections!
The website address is: [removed]
Enjoy!
Cheers!

Alan asked about Fred Allen being cut off the air for about 30 seconds. If
memory serves me correct (I may be wrong as I'm relying on memory), he was
not the only one that fell victim. Red Skelton and Bob Hope also suffered
the same. Seems a joke that wasn't accepted resulted in NBC punishing the
show with dead air silence for a short time. When other comedians did the
same in defense, they too fell victim to momentary silence.

Subject: Campana
Could any of you crack researchers help with the family tree of Campana,
sponsor of The First Nighter Program?
It really isn't clear to me what became of it ... a brief rundown can be
found on the Batavia (Ill.) Historical Society's website ... and many other
sites apparently have borrowed from it. It seems Campana became part of
Purex, which was part of Allied Laboratories, which in turn was swallowed up
by Dow Chemical.
But I haven't found anything that says at what point Dow shut down Campana,
spun off the operation to someone else, converted it to make agent orange or
whatever. Does anyone know of a site or reference work that traces such
matters definitively ... surely some periodical would have made note of any
change.
An inquiry to Dow got no response.

From Those Were The Days
8/22
1947 After many years as a 15 minute daily serial, Jack Armstrong, the
All American Boy, was heard for the first time as a 30 minute feature on
ABC. Remember, if you want to grow up to be big and strong like Jack
Armstrong, keep these three rules in mind: Get plenty of sleep, fresh air
and exercise. Make a friend of soap and water, because dirt breeds
germs and germs can make people sickly and weak. And for sound
nourishment and keen flavor, eat a big bowlful of Wheaties, the Breakfast
of Champions, with plenty of milk or cream and some type of fruit.
8/23
1923 - Billy Jones and Ernie Hare, "The Happiness Boys", were heard on
radio for the first time. The two were billed as radio's first comedians
and were also credited with creating and performing the first singing
commercial.
8/23
1950 - The summer replacement radio show for "Suspense", "Somebody Knows",
was heard for the final time on radio. The program offered a reward of
$5,000 ($44,075 in 2009 dollars) for information that led to the solving of
crimes. "Somebody Knows" began with the introduction, "You out there. You,
who think you have committed the perfect crime -- that there are no clues,
no witnesses -- listen. Somebody knows."
8/25
1949 NBC debuted Father Knows Best. The Thursday night program aired for
five years. Robert Young played the role of Jim Anderson, the ever patient
father. The rest of the family included wife Margaret, son Bud and lovely
daughters Betty (the eldest) and Kathy. The family lived on Maple Street in
Springfield.
8/28
1922 The first paid commercial to be broadcast on radio was heard on WEAF
in New York City. Announcer [removed] Blackwell spoke about Hawthorne Court, a
group of apartment buildings in Queens, New York. The Queensboro Realty
Company, of Jackson Heights, bought what was called Toll Broadcasting.
WEAF, owned by AT&T, sold their block programming, five one minute
programs, one a day for five days, for $50 (($[removed] in 2009) plus long
distance toll fees. The Queensboro Realty Company paid $100 ($[removed] in
2009*) for 10 minutes of commercial airtime.

1938 The first degree given to a ventriloquist's dummy is awarded to
Charlie McCarthy Edgar Bergen's wooden partner. The honorary degree,
"Master of Innuendo and Snappy Comeback," is presented on radio by Ralph
