Jim Cox wrote, about the on air LaRosa firing by Godfrey:
In hindsight, what transpired on CBS gave LaRosa a tremendous boost, at
least so temporarily. And Ms. Thompson's retort was similar to that of tens
of thousands of absolutely shocked Americans who could hardly believe their
ears.
I was nine years old then, and I remember my mother being angry, too; I
didn't understand all the hoopla, somehow equating it with the anti-Communist
stuff going on. (My stepfather had previously declared then-President Truman
a "g*d-dam*ned Commie rat".)
Anyhow, some years later I saw LaRosa on TV during his short-lived comeback
attempt, and I didn't like his singing: He ended many lines of the song he
was singing with "-uh".
Example:
'Brother, can you spare me a dime?
They used to tell me I was building a dream-uh.
And so I followed the mob-uh.
When there was earth to plow or guns to bear,
I was always [removed]'
I couldn't figure out why everybody had got all upset, since he wasn't such a
great crooner, with or without Godfrey.
Well, that's my 40-year-old opinion, & I'm sticking with it! :)

The incident with Jan Struther and the Agatha Christie novel Ken remarked
refers to the following:
Jan Struther made numerous appearances on the quiz program from 1940 to 1945.
She was the author of
MRS. MINIVER and delighted the experts with her charm, and ability to take a
wisecrack -- as well as give it back. Struther, however, was dropped abruptly
after innocently answering a question about an Agatha Christie novel. She
delivered the English title, TEN LITTLE NIGGERS, which was released in the
[removed] as TEN LITTLE INDIANS. The judges were expecting the American title and
while they allowed it to pass, discovered after the broadcast that a number
of people took offense to the answer. This was not uncommon as the titles of
novels (and movies) were often different from the [removed] to the [removed] She was
invited back to the series after the matter was quickly settled.
Dan Golenpaul, the producer/director, was fully aware that a program truly
spontaneous was going to offer a bit of diversion at times, and this was just
one of those stepping stones that he and the crew leanered and addressed so
it could be prevented, if possible, in future broadcasts. There are tons of
stories about people slipping on the air when the programs were live and this
was not uncommon.

Subject: Authors who are list members
Hello all,
This is particularly directed at Stephen A. Kallis, Jr., however I'm
interested in input from anyone here. I haven't seen him post for a while,
so I hope all is well with him.
As I was going through some 1980's issues of _Analog Science Fiction,
Science Fact_, I came across a name that caught my attention. It was
Stephen A. Kallis, Jr. who I of course immediately recognized from his posts
to the list. It took place in 1948. I'm not sure if that author is the
same as the digest member, but I thought I would ask. While I'm here, I
would be interested in any other digest members who've been published in
non-OTR magazines. I think I read that Martin Grams, Jr. was, but I'm not
sure about others. I found a short story in an issue of Astounding that I
think was written by Jim Harmon, but I'm not sure if it's the same one. I
also know that Carlton E. Morse wrote books after his radio career. Have
any of you spotted other stories or articles that aren't related to OTR
written by OTR digest members? If you're an author, where were you
published? Have any of you written for mystery or other fiction magazines
or publications? This could prove to be an interesting thread. I'm always
interested to see what the very talented people on the digest have written
and what their interests are in addition to OTR.

Subject: Technology & OTR show collecting
I was struck the other day when I saw that a 1 terabyte external USB drive
was selling for just $90.
It's amazing to see how much storage has come down. Assuming 128kps mp3 files
that are 23mb each, that's more than 43,000 shows.
Back in my old days of collecting shows 12 to an 1800' reel, that would be
the equivalent of 3583 reels.
At 13 ounces a reel (I know because I mailed enough of them!), that's more
than 2900 pounds of recording tape in plastic reels in boxes. A good deal on
generic Shamrock reel tape in the 1970s and 1980s was $[removed] -- the equivalent
of almost $[removed] today.
So to store that many shows on reels would have cost you $11,645 in today's
dollars. So there's your choice: $89 or $11,645.
(Double all of this if you assume 64kps recordings).
This technology is just incredible. The idea that OLD time radio benefits so
much from NEW technology is a delightful paradox.
Regards to all
Joe Webb

Subject: Re: THE CASEBOOK OF GREGORY HOOD RADIO SCRIPTS
OTR fans like myself who are addicted to mysteries as well as
old radio are in for a treat as CRIPPIN ABD LANDRU, a small press
publisher specializing in mystery is just issued a collection of
14 complete Gregory Hood radio scripts by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green
the 257 page trade paperback also includes a checklist or log
for the entire series. It's a mystery how the publisher can sell
this book for only $19.
The name behind CRIPPIN AND LANDRU should be familiar to fans
of John Dickson Carr mysteries. It is Douglas Greene, the
recognized authority on the life and works of [removed] . Carr and
author of a Carrr biography and several collections of Carr radio scripts.
Folks who know me know that when it comes to books dealing
with radio I have no sales resistance nor do I hesitate to
encourage others fall into the same trap. I mention this because
while the publisher of the Gregory Hood specializes in mystery
fiction at least three of four other volumes can be found on his
website deal with radio. Two of them are scripts that J D Carr
wrote for the BBC (13 To the Gallows and Speak of the Devil) Two
other volumes containing material related to Ellery Queen (The
Tragedy Of Errors and The Adventure of the Murdered Moths and
Other Radio Mysteries)......
And finally, beyond being a good customer to all publishers of radio
e books I have no financial interest in this company.

In response to the Gunsmoke "audible bedsprings" reference, I have several
tapes of Gunsmoke dress rehearsals in which the tradition among the actors was
to become as raucous and profane as possible, knowing that the tapes would
never be broadcast. The language, complete with curses, obscenities,
references to bodily functions and clamorous laughter would rival anything on
HBO today.

1937 The American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was organized. It
was part of the American Federation of Labor. The union was for all
radio performers except musicians. The union later became The American
Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) to include TV folk,
as well.
1942 Stage Door Canteen was first heard on CBS. The show was broadcast
from New York City and 500 servicemen were entertained each week by
celebrities who freely donated their time for the war effort.
7/31
1933 listeners turned up the radio on this day to hear the announcer
introduce "Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy!" The show was one of
the longest running adventure programs on radio, continuing until 1951.
