 From Those Were The Days

10/27

Marconi, Fessenden, and De Forest were the catalysts. However, it was an
engineer for Westinghouse Electric who, in 1916, was broadcasting music
from his garage (in Wilkinsburg, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh) over a
wireless (amateur radio station 8XK) who really got the whole thing
started. A newspaper article about the broadcasts caused such interest
that the head honchos at Westinghouse decided to build a real radio station.

It took until this day in 1920 for the Westinghouse radio station to
receive a license to broadcast. The license for KDKA, Pittsburgh came
from the [removed] Department of Commerce. Although the license was
officially issued on this day, KDKA did not start their broadcast
operations for a week (they had to wait until the license was posted in
the station). On November 2, 1920, the station aired the returns of the
Harding/Cox election ... the first radio programming to reach an
audience of any size ... approximately 1,000 people.

1947 This is Nora Drake premiered on NBC. Nora solved domestic, social
and child raising problems until January 2, 1959.

1947 "The one, the only Groucho" Marx appeared as quizmaster on You
Bet Your Life for the first time on ABC. George Fenneman was Groucho's
eternal straight man. Fenneman stayed with Marx during the program's run
on radio (1948-1959) and TV (1950-1961). By the way, who is buried in
Grant's tomb?

10/28

1922 WEAF in New York broadcast the first collegiate football game
heard coast to coast. Princeton played the University of Chicago at
Stagg Field in the Windy City. The broadcast was carried on phone lines
to New York City, where the radio transmission began. (Princeton 21,
Chicago 18.)

1946 Our favorite flying cowboy was heard on ABC for the first time.
Sky King starred Jack Lester, then Earl Nightingale, and finally, Roy
Engel, as Sky. Beryl Vaughn played Sky's niece Penny; Jack Bivens was
Chipper and Cliff Soubier was the foreman. Sky King was sponsored by
Mars candy.

10/30

Orson Welles, known to radio audiences as The Shadow, presented his
famous dramatization of [removed] Wells' The War of the Worlds on CBS's
Mercury Theater at 8 [removed]

10/31

1942 One of the great wartime shows premiered. CBS debuted Thanks to
the Yanks, starring Bob Hawk. It became one of the most popular of the
wartime programs.

11/1

1937 The first broadcast of Hilltop House was aired on CBS; while on
NBC, the comic strip character Terry and the Pirates debuted.

11/2

1931 Myrt and Marge was heard for the first time on CBS. The
program centered on two chorus girls who competed for the same parts and
the same men. The creator and writer (Cliff Thomas wrote some) of the
series, Myrtle Vail, also played the role of Myrt; and the original
Marge was performed by Vail's daughter, Donna Fick. Three other
performers played the part when Donna died giving birth. Myrt and Marge
continued for 11 years.

RED NICHOLS SHOW FOR THE [removed] MARINES CORPS

Last week at this spot on your Olde Tyme Radio Network dial Red Norvo
was featured with Mildred Bailey, and this week we spotlight another Red
-- Red Nichols. This week's Red takes center stage on his radio show of
December 20, 1951, with his "Five Pennies" band, which, of course,
rarely had just 5 "Pennies." Red himself said that he would "generally
have eight or nine, depending on who was around for the session and what
I was trying to do." Among those "Pennies" at various times were Jimmy
Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Miff Mole, Glenn Miller, Jack Teagarden, Joe
Venuti, and Gene Krupa. Red's cornet playing was most popular in the
1920's when he made over 4000 Dixieland recordings with groups with
names like "The California Red Heads," "Miff Mole and His Little
Molers," "The Six Hottentots," "The Charleston Chasers," and the
"Arkansas Travelers."

Red and his band start off this fifteen minute broadcast for the Marine
Corps recruiting efforts with the classic "That's a Plenty" and follow
it with a lyrically smooth jazz rendition of "Over the Rainbow." Red's
upbeat and energetic vocalist Dottie O' Brien contributes "Painting the
Clouds with Sunshine," and the "Pennies" perform "Sweet Adeline," the
first half in a wonderfully smooth and soft Dixieland interpretation and
then in an up-tempo style. A line from "Adeline," of course, has one of
the simplest but sweetest of all ballad metaphors -- "You're the flower
of my heart." Although Red's version is instrumental, in my mind I can
clearly hear the Mills Brothers' great 1939 version, and it also brings
a smile as I recall the Marx Brothers singing it as stowaways aboard
ship in the 1931 movie "Monkey Business."

Red's theme song "Wail of the Winds" and the stirring "Marines' Hymn"
take us to the show's conclusion as Red and announcer Del Sharbett
encourage young men to join the Corps to "preserve the American way of
life" and, as the hymn says, to "fight for right and freedom." Listening
to the patriotic music brings me renewed appreciation for our armed
forces then and now -- for the brave men and women who have given their
lives and for those who give their lives today "in the air, on land, and
sea ... to keep our honor clean."

Incidentally, as fans of Red Nichols probably know, the 1959 Hollywood
film "The Five Pennies" is mostly fiction, but the cornet playing is
actually done by Red himself, and Louis Armstrong himself appears and
performs to the delight of Red's character played by Danny Kaye.

Go to the wonderful website [removed] for great samples of Red's
"happy jazz" music that he loved so much. Among references in print is
"Red Head: A Chronological Survey of 'Red' Nichols and His Five Pennies"
by [removed] Stroff.

This program and more Red Nichols shows are available in the Jerry
Haendiges Collection.
