Subject: More Lemac
With all the recent posts about the Bob Hawk Show I'm surprised that no one
has mentioned the opening of the show. "Is there A lemac in the house?" This
was followed by a roar from the audience.
As a kid I must have listened to the show that was on before the Bob Hawk
Show because I remember the opening. I didn't understand the program but
remember that it was a quiz show. I did eventually realize that a lemac was
camel spelled backward. I thought it was pretty silly, and now I am sure of
it.

Does anyone know where I can purchase the CD set produced at WVXU called
Cincinnati Radio - The Nation's Station (1921-1941)?

Subject: OTR Halloween-related on-line listening fun
Here's a web site that has Halloween-related recordings (including
Spike Jones and some "Lights Out") available for on-line listening.
It might be good if you have a high-speed connection rather than
dial-up. I wasn't able to listen to the "Lights Out", though. I got a
message from the server that "bandwidth has been exceeded". You might
have better luck.

Subject: Superman serial
Don Dean mentioned the Superman serial being broadcast on TCM. They are
broadcasting the serial over their network for publicity and marketing
reasons. Warner is releasing both serials together as a special DVD set
within the next few weeks and airing it on TCM helps promote the serial and
no doubt TCM will make mention of it's release.
Small tid bits. The serial was supposedly destroyed decades ago when the TV
Superman series became popular. They falsely advertised the show of
featuring George Reeves, the first man to portray Superman on the screen
when in fact, that was false. Kirk Allen played the man in tights for two
serials and somehow an attempt was made to destroy the prints to prevent the
serials from being featured in the theaters while the TV series remained
popular.
Sometime during the 1970s, the prints were found and after a few legal
issues, the matter was resolved and agreed to have them released
commercially again. Warner released the films on VHS but altered the film
on purpose. The serial was released in box sets with 2 VHS videos per
serial and they edited the opening serial theme from chapters 2 - 7 and 9 -
15.
The VHS videos were the only times the serials were ever commercially and
since people have transferred the serial to DVD over the past few years from
this same source, many include the complete music opening for chapters 1 and
8, and never went back to edit them back into the other chapters.
The official DVD commercial release coming out shortly will be the COMPLETE
print, unlike the VHS releases.
One last note, when TCM airs something that is not owned by them (Turner
doesn't own the rights to the serial, they are only playing it in
conjunction with Warners), they don't usually put a TCM logo in the corner
of their films. So anyone who has a DVD recorder hooked up directly to
their satellite or cable network might want to consider taping it for
themselves to save paying the expensive price the commercial set is going to
cost (unless one cares about paying for the cardboard packaging).

A great article on the approaching Friends of Old Time Radio Convention in Newark (October 19-22) ran in Sunday's Bergen Record.
It features a long interview with Arthur Anderson and Bill Herz, surviving Mercury Players who will be part of the Julius Ceaser Recreation on Saturday night at FOTR as well as a preview of the convention.

Subject: the Gildersleeve strip show

> My question is this: "Was Gildersleeve changed to a nightly series?"
> I checked Jerry's log, but it only lists the show as a half hour, with
> the run ending in the spring of 1954.
What many "logs" (lists of shows on websites) omit is that The Great
Gildersleeve *did* spend a period of time as a nightly 15 minute series
before returning to a more familiar weekly half an hour (actually 25
minutes or less) show before the actual end of it's run in 1957.
What is news to me however, is that I was unaware of any episodes of the
strip show existing! I assumed that they did exist, as so many episodes of
the Fibber McGee and Molly strip show exist (and have for many years), but
I did not think that any were circulating. If anyone has a lossless copy of
this show I'd be VERY interested in hearing it!
For reliable information on The Great Gildersleeve, Ben Ohmart and
Charles Stumpf have written an excellent book, and Terry Salomonson has
prepared the log that all others have been based on. While not infallible,
I've found these sources more reliable than most information available on
the internet.
