Not ME, folks!: I'm well-known for my phonographic memory, and "War
Of The Worlds" is my FAVORITE broadcast! I know it word for word, and
intonation for intonation. Were I (unwarned) to hear ANY version that
differed from the one I'm familiar with, it would not be very long
before I'd be leaping out of my seat with my ear glued to the speaker
and my mouth dropped open, because I'd hear ANY difference almost
immediately.

Are any of these "alternate recordings" available anywhere for download?
Because I for one would be VERY interested in hearing any of them!!!

[ADMINISTRIVIA: Speaking only of the "Treasure Island" episode of
Mercury Theater, the "normal" transcript is available in Audio CD format
from the [removed] shop at:

[removed]

This is the one that runs a little short, contains a WABC New York station
ident, and carries Orsen Welles telling the complete story of how the young
Arthur Anderson made it rain during a performance of Julus Caesar.

The other version, with the shortened closing and also including a WABC New
York station identification is available on the 2008/02 Fundraiser Disk:

FWIW, I provided copies of both and asked Arthur about this; he remembers
doing only one performance of the show and believes the second version to be
a rehersal transcription. But it's seventy years and thousands of
performances ago, so factor that in.

Both discs, and everything else at the [removed] shop, directly support

Fans of the duo riding Silver and Scout will be quite startled to
read in the current catalog of Edward R. Hamilton Booksellers this
description of a DVD package they are offering:

"Lone Ranger Collection. Chronicles the legend of the Lone Ranger and
how Dan Reid (Clayton Moore) became the masked rider of the plains,
and Tonto (Jay Silverheels) his faithful companion. Features 17
episodes, over six hours on 2 b&w DVDs.

Subject: "Mercury Theatre - on the Air!" ( - and air -
 and air -?)

With no disrespect meant to the esteemed scholars hereabouts, the theory
presented recently that the Merc may have done two, or even three,
broadcasts of its shows struck me as odd. For three reasons, mainly:

1. As a big admirer, especially of the I hour seasons, I had never heard
this anywhere else. And I've read many published comments on the show, from
Welles, Houseman, & co., as well as having had the honor of speaking to
such vets as Ted Reid, and others mentioned in this post.

3. Knowing from many sources of Orson's usual
by-the-seat-of-the-pants/love-em-and-leave-em working style, it did not ring
true to character.

4. When I assisted Lister and German Radio producer Christian Blees in
interviewing one of the few survivors of the WOTW show, Bill Herz, he made a
point of stating that the company did not know of the scope of the brouhaha
it caused until arriving at the Mercury Theatre for a stage rehearsal after
the broadcast - THE broadcast, not an extended two or three hour session.

So, when I saw fellow Episcopal Actors' Guild member Arthur Anderson at a
performance today, I asked him his answer to the question about the series.
He did four - and he said "One."

He did immediately mention without my prompting rehearsal Acetates as the
likely source of the slight variants in existing recordings that Martin
mentioned. That had been my theory as well, as off the top of my head, I seem
to
recall two episodes in circulation that are longer than the usual running
time: TREASURE ISLAND, and JULIUS CEASAR -and in both cases, I'd heard
that they were likely compilation recordings from more than one source.

Of course, Mr. Anderson's memories are 70 years old at this point, and
research can produce new and interesting facts; but right now, this theory
works for me.

Best,
-Craig Wichman
