This one focuses on Hope's movie career. Again, one would think he had
starred in "To Be or Not To Be" or something classic like that. I prefer
the opinion of Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. "Historians dispute whether
Bob Hope made 15 mediocre movies, or rather that he made the same mediocre
movie 15 times."

Anyway, here's the link, from the Wall Street Journal's webpage,

I was watching an old movie on video from the Library a few weeks
ago, in which Eddie Anderson had a minor roll. I have been
diagnosed with CRS (Can't Remember Stuff) so the title escapes me,
but it was from the 1930's. When he spoke I did not recognize him
at first as his voice did not have any gravel sound to it at all.
This made me wonder if the gravel voice came later due to some
medical condition or accident.

The story goes that Eddie Anderson was a lad selling papers on the
streetcorners of Oakland, California. Whichever newsboy shouted the loudest
usually got
the most business, so Eddie tried ably to outdo his competitors. So ably, in
fact, that he permanently damaged his vocal chords.

Now that's the *story* that everyone quotes. There's always the possibility
that it's not true. But I do recall hearing him speak briefly at the time of
Jack's death, and although he seemed almost overcome with emotion, you could
still hear the gravel affectation. Based on his emotional state at the time,
I
doubt that he would have been in a position to "put on" a character voice.

Eddie Anderson plays Uncle Peter, one of the servants, in Gone With the Wind.
It's a very minor role, but you may recall him slowly pursuing a rooster in
a rainstorm, verbally encouraging it to surrender.

Hi:

I'm listening to the entire run of "Gunsmoke." While doing so ---and
enjoying it tremendously-- I have heard several episodes where it sounds to
me like Parley Baer plays another, minor character along with Chester.
Usually it's a crotchety older fellow.

Am I hearing things, or was this done on occasion?

Thanks,

Tom Z.

Subject: Re: Batman guest

Here is a Television/Old Time Radio trivia question. As you know Batman was a
guest Super Hero on Superman's radio show from time to time. Do you know what
Old Time Radio Super Hero was a guest on the Adam West Batman television
series? I know the answer but do you? Lets see how many know out there.

That one's a cinch, Allen. It's the Green Hornet (and Kato). They appeared
in the 1967 episodes "A Piece of the Action" and "Batman's Satisfaction,"
though they were not the "principal" bad guys. Each was billed as, if I
remember, "Guest Super Hero." They also made a cameo appearance on Batman
the year before.

I'm looking for episodes of old-time radio programs that send clear moral
messages that I can share with church groups and such.

Bill Wilson requested stories with a moral. Well - Family Theater and Let's
Pretend were full of stories with morals. Family Theater was targeted to a
Christian audience and later programs 'doctored up' classic story lines
just so a moral could be established.
Dragnet and Gangbusters (and I suppose Calling All Cars, 21st Precinct, and
Tales of the Texas Rangers) certainly emphasized "crime does not pay" (ok,
the Shadow too) .22 for Christmas on Dragnet comes to mind

Many of the 'teen' comedies from the 50's tried to teach honesty,

There are many others, as I'm sure others will point out.
Almost all the programs are available for rent from you local OTR club -

Subject: Batman's OTR guest star

Britt Reid, daring young publisher, matches wits with
the underworld-- and in one episode of the Batman TV
series (well, two, but except for the last season all
Batman episodes were two-part stories centering on one
adventure), he and Kato faced off against the dynamic
duo.

That appearance in "Batman" is the ONLY time-- to this
day-- that I have ever seen the Green Hornet on "live"
TV (as opposed to watching a videotape or DVD). Yes, I
do have the video released a few years ago that
promotes Brue Lee as Kato and contains three Green
Hornet episodes, but that's not the same as having it
broadcast on network or cable. I was too young to have
watched the show in first run airing, but I've never
even seen the Green Hornet series show up on any
station, network or cable, in any of the years since.

And the character was created in Detroit. How's that
for irony?

I believe that would be the Green Hornet. Batman premiered on ABC in
January 1966 and was an instant sensation. "Batmania" swept the nation then,
and I was into it as an 8 year old as anyone.(Had the Batman cape, Mask,
etc.) ABC, trying to cash in on a trend, Premiered the "Green Hornet" in the
1966-67 season with B-Movie actor Van Williams in the Title role and Martial
Arts expert/actor Bruce Lee as Kato.
While Batman's style was Deliberately "campy" The "Green Hornet" played it
much more straight. The Green Hornet and Kato guested on "Batman" September
28-29, 1966 and March 1-2 1967 (Both 2 part adventures shown on consecutive
nights).

With regard to "morality" shows, the first one that comes to mind for me is
"Martian Death March" on either X-1 or Dimension X. Sorry, I'm here at work,
so I can't give you more exact info than that, but it is a pretty famous show
and easy to find. I think this is a great show, one of my favorites. It
might work for you because it does have a very strong anti-prejudice message,
and lots of Biblical allusions with an old Moses-type character leading the
Martians across the desert to their 'promised land' in the mountains. Might
make for interesting discussion.

Subject: Italian Balm

Just thinking about the hand lotion product called "Italian Balm" as I was
moisterizing my hands with Corn Huskers
Lotion last night. A computer search revealed that The Campana Company made
"Italian Balm" in Batavia, NY
beginning in 1927. During WWII, Ernest Oswalt, the company's founder,
changed the name to "Campana Balm"
after the Canadian doctor from whom he had purchased the formula for the
hand lotion.

Oswalt was also one of the first entrepreneurs to see the value of media
advertising. He hired Florence Ward, a fiction writer in Batavia, to write
radio scripts for "The First Nighter" radio programs. Italiam Blam was
introduced on the show, a popular program on the air for 22 years.

Campana became a member of the Purex Corporation in 1962, a subsidiary of
Allied Laboratories which merged with Dow Chemical. Campana products were
made in Batavia until operations were moved out-of-state. I remember that
"Italian Balm" had a pleasant fragrance,
and it really worked on chapped hands very well.

I was listening to a "Frontier Gentleman" episode called "The Preacher"
broadcast October 19, 1958 and was stopped cold when the announcer, Bud
Sewell, stated that the actors were Waldo Epperson, Richard Perkins,
and Ray Wood. WOW! The voices I had been hearing were those of Ralph
Moody, Parley Baer and Vic Perrin. Whoever heard of this other
threesome? Why would Sewell have given false names? He had been
announcing for numerous episodes, so he must have known the actors.
Can anyone explain, please?
