ADMINISTRIVIA:
Yes, I know I did a terrible thing; I turned off the mailing list
server last week so I could enjoy the final FOTR Convention without
worrying about the Digest and other lists on the server. Over the
next few days we'll be catching up with the tons of email to both
the lists and to me personally (no mail was lost, only delayed).
To start, I should mention that last Thursday The Bob Edwards Show
on SiriusXM rebroadcast the hour interview of Norman Corwin; should
anyone be interested in hearing that broadcast, please let me know.
For obvious reasons, I won't be running it on the podcast. --cfs3

Subject: Re: Norman Corwin dead at age 101
I teach a course on OTR at the area Oscher Lifelong Learning Institute and
today is my last class. As I always do, I close it out by playing "A Note of
Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin," the Oscar-winning documentary on
his life and work (thanks to Charlie for helping me obtain a copy a few years
ago). It will be especially poignant today, of course.
While it's always sad when someone dies, I feel more enriched by his life and
contribution to broadcasting and literature itself. He was and will remain a
part of my life.
The only sad thing is that his passing will be so relatively unnoticed
because he was a giant in a medium that, for all intents and purposes, not
longer exists. Yes, radio still exists, but you all know what I mean. If a
comparable figure in film, literature, music or television died yesterday, it
would certainly be among the lead stories.
But here's to you, Mr. Corwin. It's often said that "there'll never be
another one like him/her," but in this case it couldn't be more appropriate.
He often said that he was riding a great horse (radio) that got shot out from
under him. Without that horse, there can never even BE another great rider.
Alan

The world of radio collectors lost a pioneer in the hobby with the recent
death of Ed Corcoran, who co-hosted The Golden Age of Radio with Dick Bertel
for seven years on WTIC, in Hartford, CT.
Dick first met Ed in 1965 and they appeared together regularly on radio and
TV for the next twelve years. Ed was one of the very first to begin
recording, collecting and preserving the old network radio shows he had
listened to as a child. His unique interest prompted him to call Dick and
ask him if he would be interested in discussing and playing some of these
old programs on WTIC. They didn't have clearances on the shows, so they
opted to play only a few minutes of each program as a teaser. Because the
audience was in their mid to late thirties these excepts hit a responsive
chord with them, assuring additional appearances over the years.
When Ed began to tell Dick of people then living in the Connecticut area who
had once worked on these great radio shows Dick asked him if he would be
interested in co-hosting a monthly interview program so that they might talk
about those wonderful days. The result was "The Golden Age of Radio" whose
shows are preserved on the website, [removed] You can
also see the obituary that ran in the Hartford Courant.

Does anyone know of the existence of any copies of this John Wayne radio show?
One book published 13 years ago says that only half of one show exists, but I
was wondering if any more have been unearthed?
