Subject: Ike's First D Day Broadcast

Hi Gang-

I'm trying to find a "clean" copy of Eisenhower's speech
to America announcing
that we landed on the beaches in Normandy. The speech begins with
"People of Western [removed]"
It's a CBS broadcast (6/6/44). Unfortunately, the copy I have has lots
of static.

Can any of you help?

Thanks and best regards,

Subject: Wire recorders

 Jim Woods writes:

"Wire recordings definitely have something going for them. As Art Shifrin
will tell you, they last almost indefinitely with insignificant loss of
quality. The stainless steel wire won't rust or oxidize; just keep the wire
on the spool and it'll be there and playable a hundred years from now.

But won't the wire break? My father, who always seemed to be at the
forefront of late 1940s and early 1950s technology, was the first on his
block to have a wire recorder. Even through the haze of a a half-century, I
can still see those spools spinning wildly as they whipped the broken wire
around.

Subject: Re: See you at FOTR

It never fails. You try and get a head start on dubbing tapes for the
convention and always end up staying up the night before trying to finish.

Without trying to be too blatant, I invite those of you attending to stop
by our table. In addition to the normal tapes and CD, my wife and I had
some hats printed up that read "I Love Old Time Radio". Our name does not
appear anywhere on them so they make a great way to say what we feel. Of
course we are selling them at a nominal price, but for a big enough order,
they are free. Ask Ellen or I for details.

I've also written some thoughts on MP3 and the whole digital thing. It's
all put together with our CD catalog, which also contains four - 30 minute
programs.

We will be arriving sometime Wednesday afternoon, so if anyone else is
getting in early, how about we all get together for dinner.

Subject: Wire recorder

Hi to the list. I have a friend who found a wire recorder in perfect
condition in his mother's estate. Anyone have any suggestions for him on
where it could be sold or how much it is worth? I believe it is a Sears
brand.

Subject: Tello-Test

I shouldn't be amazed at what strikes the attention of posters to this
list for daily it is a fascinating study in human behavior. Yet
something happens every now and then that totally startles me and for
which I'm unprepared.

About a week ago Dennis Crow wrote a brief mention of what was to me an
extremely obscure quiz series that appeared on MBS between 1945-51 (which
I assumed very few people had ever heard) called Tello-Test. The show is
one of more than 400 similar programs that are documented in an appendix
titled "An Annotated Guide to Network Radio Audience Participation Shows"
appearing in my new book, "The Great Radio Audience Participation Shows"
(McFarland).

Well lo and behold, there hasn't been a day since that "unbeknownst"
feature, Tello-Test, was mentioned that it hasn't been subsequently
discussed by at least somebody, and generally several somebodies. In
Wednesday's forum (#340), for example, of 14 messages, four had
"Tello-Test" in their subject lines! Wow. While I know the thread will
probably play out shortly, it just goes to prove that--when our memories
are jogged a little--we arrive at all sorts of recollections that we may
not have thought much about in half a century or longer. And often they
are pleasant respites. (Aren't you thankful for this forum?)

Now I wonder: Could there be any other series among the 400+ that would
play on our heartstrings just as well?

The invaluable David Hinckley of The New York Daily News gave the Friends of
Old Time Radio and our own Elizabeth MacLeod a big plug in today's edition:

When it's time for the annual convention, time to mention the passing of a
radio great or cover the history of a station going off the air, Mr. Hinckley
remains the only working journalist in New York who cares about the City's
radio heritage.

Liz - thanks for helping out with this interview, if you send me your address
off-line I'll mail you a copy.
