Subject: MBS and its ratings in radio's golden age
May 23, 2007
Dear Old Time Radio Digest Readers:
Another question about the Mutual Broadcasting System
and its history.
In radio's golden age in a four-network race for
ratings and listeners. Did MBS ever lead its time
slot with a program? Did MBS ever have any programs
in radio's top Ten or top twenty?
When MBS aired detective programs such as the Shadow
and Neck Carter Master Detective, did these programs
lead their time slots on Sundays?
Many Thanks
Jim Taylor

Subject: Making an OTR Smart Playlist in Itunes
Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has made a Smart Playlist in Itunes with radio
shows? If so, would you be willing to share the Playlist? I've been wanting
to make one, but not sure how with OTR. I was thinking a variety of OTR Gen
then shuffle different shows of that type maybe 5 shows at a time or so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Doing the Math
Does anyone else do the math? I mean look at the birth and death list,
subtract one from the other and figure how old they were when they died?
Then the next step is to be thankful that we or to be more exact I am older
than they ever got. Add to this the question of whether I have had as
significant impact as they did. I won't go into that here.
So as a tribute to:
"08-19-1902 - Ogden Nash - Rye, NY - d. 5-19-1971
poet: "Three Ring Time"; "Kaleidoscope"
And as a former Wyoming farm boy with a Holstein dog, "a Landseer
Newfoundland named Tippo":
"The cow is of the bovine ilk,
One end is MOO the other milk.
Larry Moore
PS: I still have 3 years to go to equal Ogden. Hopefully I will surpass him.
But if I don't, I promise to not tell you.

Subject: Dust and Glory
Thanks to Mike Hobart for the info on Evan Green's book Dust and Glory,
which includes Australian Radio Legend Jack Davey.
I wasn't aware of the book. I do have the DVD on the Redex trials because
of Jack's involvement in them and I look forward to finding a copy of the
book.

Subject: Mutual's Second Half Hour of Dramas
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from text/html
Jim Taylor remembers Mutual's mystery dramas during the mid to late
1950's in the dying days of network radio. The programs were broadcast
Monday to Friday evenings from 8:00PM to 9:00PM
eastern time. I used to listen over the Buffalo Mutual affiliate at
the time, WEBR AM970 which is now an NPR outlet (WNED). The following
is the lineup of programs as I recall:
Mondays: True Detective Mysteries; The Lives of Harry Lime (The
Third Man)
Tuesdays: Treasury Agent; The Scarlet Pimpernel
Wednesdays: Gangbusters; Horatio Hornblower
Thursdays: Official Detective; It's a Crime, Mr. Collins
Fridays: Counterspy (later replaced by Crime Fighters); City Editor.
I believe that Harry Lime, Scarlet Pimpernel and Hornblower were
reruns of series produced a few years earlier. Does anyone else have
any recollections about these programs? Mutual deserves
credit for broadcasting drama during this period when slowly but
surely the major network shows
were disappearing from the airwaves. Incidentally, as I recall, by
this time, ABC had virtually abandoned nighttime radio.

Subject: Vera Vague/Bob Hope Show
I received this vit of info on Vera Vague/Bob Hope from Gerry Orlando of the
Syracuse NY Cinefile Society:
Hi Bill,
Thanks for forwarding that "Vera Vague" question from the OTR site. I have
the answer to that person's question. In 1948, Bob Hope's "Pepsodent" radio
show was dropping in the ratings, so for his 1948-1949 season, the whole
show was revamped and given a "makeover". Former regulars Jerry Collona and
Vera Vague were dropped and replaced with Jack Kirkwood and Irene Ryan.
Apparently the revamping didn't seriously harm Hope's relationship with
Collona, because Collona eventually returned to Hope's radio show in the
1950's, plus Collona appeared on Hope TV shows and service camp tours for
years. However, Vera never worked regularly with Hope again after the 1948
radio show revamping, so maybe the Hope-Vague relationship suffered more
from the change than the Hope-Collona relationship did.
