I write with fear and trembling because I am about to express an opinion
which differs from that of two top radio historians, John Dunning and Jim
Cox. Jim Cox is, of course, a regular contributor to this space and his books
on OTR are a wonderful source of information and a joy to read.

I have long been a fan of Dashiell Hammett's fiction and, not surprisingly,
very much enjoy listening to The Adventures of Sam Spade. Howard Duff did
a great job playing Spade. Like many other OTR fans, I am saddened and
angered by the fact that both Duff and Hammett were victims of the House on
Un-American Activities Committee.

But, perhaps Howard Duff's successor as Sam Spade, Steve Dunne, is the
victim of a more minor case of injustice. Yes,the public obviously didn't
accept Dunne as Sam Spade following the abrupt firing of Howard Duff. That is
certainly understandable. And in the three Dunne episodes I have listened
to, his scenes with Lurene Tuttle don't sparkle as the Duff-Tuttle scenes
did, but that might have improved with time. The Spade series with Steve
Dunne
only lasted about five months.

But Steve Dunne was believable as Sam Spade. He wasn't quite the wise-guy
Duff was, his Spade was a bit more grounded. But, while his wise cracks were
fewer they were usually funnier and more relevant to the plot. The three
Dunne episodes I have listened to were well written, almost sixty years
after they were produced, they still make for solid entertainment.

Yes, Howard Duff was THE Sam Spade as Bob Bailey was THE Johnny Dollar but
Dunne's Sam Spade can still be listened to and enjoyed. I respectfully
disagree with John Dunning and Jim Cox who brushed off Dunne's Sam Spade.

Perhaps I am expressing a minority opinion but I do want to remedy what I
believe is a minor injustice.

Hi Folks.
An interesting article about lack of funds to digitise the Radio Pakistan
archives appeared earlier this week. Best way to see it is just to 'Google'
the title:

'Two million minutes of rare audio under threat'.

Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA / UK )

Someone told the Crowne Plaza about our convention, and
they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. At least this year
I have more than two weeks to let everyone know. This
hotel has a very nice dinning room and bar (for those who
drink). There are other places to eat close to the hotel.
The address: 5901 Pfeiffer Rd. Cincinnati, Ohio 45242
Exit 15 off interstate I-71 [removed]
Our room rate is $89 single or double. There is a Red Roof
Inn across the street. [removed] There rate is around $60.
If you want to check out our, hotel they have a web site.
