The Groucho also appeared on "Hollywood Mardi Gras" (Packard Motor Company's
1937-1938 replacement for "The Packard Hour starring Fred Astaire"). It
obviously wasn't his radio debut, and I mention it only because it doesn't
appear on the [removed] list of radio appearances. Here's the script
for a bit of the Marx Brothers' entrance (others appearing are Charlie
Butterworth and Lanny Ross). All I've got is the script, which I found in my
dad's papers:

MARX BROTHERS ENTRANCE SPOT

those two famous [removed]'ve seen their faces on cough drops for

ROSS: No, [removed] [removed] MARX [removed] must have
seen them in "A Day at the Races".

BUTTER: I might have. What box were they sitting in?

ROSS: Never mind, Charlie. I'll introduce them myself. Ladies and
gentlemen, those two mad Marxmen of the screen -- CHICO AND GROUCHO!

ORCHESTRA: ENTRANCE MUSIC (CHICO PIANO THEME)

(APPLAUSE)

ROSS: Welcome, Chico and Groucho, to our Hollywood Mardi [removed]

CHICO: Oh [removed] so fast! What IS a Mardi Gras?

ROSS: Oh -- you know -- it's a big noisy crowd of [removed] they get
together and throw [removed]

GROUCHO: Not so [removed]'ll give the audience ideas!

ROSS: Who are you?

GROUCHO: I'm Groucho -- Here's my card!

ROSS: Thank [removed] says, "Groucho [removed] man."

GROUCHO: That's right.

ROSS: But I can hardly read this. The words, "business man" are in such
very small letters.

GROUCHO: Well - I'm doing a very small business!.....

ROSS: Have you a card, Chico?

CHICO: I haven't a card but I got a riddle.

BUTTER: What is it?

CHICO: What is it that goes up and down and flies sideways, and has ice
cream on top?

BUTTER: I give up - what's the answer?

CHICO: I give up, too. But wouldn't it be a great riddle if there was an
answer?

Subject: Mid 40s term question - sibilance

At rehearsal today, during a time when the "actors" are warming up, one fellow was doing vocal warm up exercises
and then said sibilance several times, working on controlling his.

My questions is, would that term have been known or used in the mid 40s?

Given the limited bandwidth of audio at the time, as well as the smooth response of the
ribbon mics, I don't believe sibilance would have been a problem, and the term would not
have been in common usage.

Can anyone shed some light on this before I incorrectly correct this actor?

Thanks.
