There are 2 BBC Radio 4 plays now available for streaming that may be of

Subject: KGO Show from the 40s
Came across a new, to me, show called One Out of
Seven. Produced in the late 1940s by KGO, the ABC
affiliate in San Francisco with Jack Webb narrating,
the program sounds like a cross between March of Time
and the Bill Stern Colgate Sportsreel. It selects one
'story of the week' and dramatizes it with, it says,
all material coming from either AP or INS [
International News Service, the Hearst service that
later was absorbed into what became known as UPI ].
Anyone know anything more about this show?

Hi all:
Nick and Linda asked:
does anyone know whether Satellite Radio hosts any OTR shows? If you do,
would you
kindly let me know. I've been interested in this new medium of radio, but
while looking on their lists of shows, I don't see any nostalgic radio. I'm
interested in most OTR, plus 20s - 40s music.
Both XM and Syrius radio have channels that play otr 24/7. I believe that
Radio Spirits sponsors both channels. Both services also host channels that
play Big Band music, as well as channels that play old standards and classic
jazz. I'm an XM subscriber and I'm listening to Nightbeat on channel 164 as I
type this.
Now I have a question about CBS. I was listening to War of the Worlds last
night and it struck me that they identify CBS as, "The Columbia Broadcasting
System." That was in 1938, and I know CBS stood for Columbia until the mid
1950's because you can hear that identification on Suspense, Escape, Gunsmoke,
etc. When did the C switch from Columbia to Central?
Thanks,
RyanO

Subject: May Jane Higby's book
I have a copy on tape in storage of the book when it originally came
out in the seventies. At that time, "Tune In Tomorrow", was narrated
by Mary Jane Higby.
I wonder why they don't just release that version? It was already
done and she did a great job narrating it.
Ah well, Progress!

From Those Were The Days --
5/8
1959 - The final broadcast of One Man's Family was heard on NBC after
being on the air 27 years. The show had completed 3,256 episodes since
its beginning in 1932.
8/9
1936 - Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy started their own radio show on
NBC -- only months after they had debuted on Rudy Vallee's program. [removed]
Fields, Don Ameche and Dorothy Lamour were a few of the stars that
helped Bergen and the little blockhead, McCarthy, jump to the top of
radio's hit parade.
5/10
1927 - The Hotel Statler in Boston, MA. became the first hotel to
install radio headsets in each of its 1,300 rooms.
5/11
1946 - Jack Barry hosted Juvenile Jury on WOR in New York City. The show
was such a hit after five weeks on the air that it debuted on the Mutual
Broadcasting System coast to coast.
5/12
1922-- the magazine "Radio Broadcast" commented, "The rate of increase
in the number who spend at least part of an evening listening to radio
is almost incomprehensible."

I don't have Sat. radio tho i'm looking into it for my birthday in august.
Anywho I was just looking at the programming on both Sirius and XM at the
same time as I was reading the OTR mailing list
There's OTR on Sirius 118
Here's the schedule:
[removed];c=Channel&cid=1

OTR is also available on XM 164
Here's the page with a listing of their regular shows. There's also an adobe
PDF file of their weekly schedule

[ADMINISTRIVIA: As this comes up frequently, I have placed my review of XM's
version of MediaBay's RadioClassics, titled, "XM Radio fails in one [removed]"
on my blog at [removed] - the short answer is, XM is
well worth the money for public affairs and music, but do _not_ purchase it
for the OTR. --cfs3]

Subject: High cost of [removed]
It is with considerable regret that I mention the high cost of reading many
of the fine books published about Old Time Radio. If I were independently
wealthy, this would not be a problem. I have bought some of the expensive
volumes for my personal library. Hickerson and Dunning, some Jim Cox, and a
Martin Grams or two. But many of the books I would like to own are far too
expensive for my budget. There are a few publishers who have made their
titles affordable.
I guess my only recourse is to visit the used and antiquarian book dealers.
Oh, BTW, I do have my old copy of Hickerson, 2nd edition (2001). If anyone
wants it, I will be happy to ship it to you.

Friday's Wall Street Journal reported that old time radio producer, Hilman
Brown, donated [removed] million to the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in
honor of his deceased wife. The article mentioned that Mr. Hilman was the
creator and producer "Inner Sanctum Mysteries," and "The Adventures of the
Thin Man." Of course, he created/produced/directed many other programs as
well.
