SAME TIME, SAME STATION

This week's show is devoted to Jack Benny and the life of the man who
impersonated him, Eddie Carroll.

We knew Eddie only for the last 10 years of his life. Sadly, we lost
Eddie Carrol to a brain tumor, early Tuesday morning 04-6-10.

For several years, Larry chaired annual conventions for The Society To
Preserve And Encourage Radio Drama Variety And Commedy. In the year
2000, we invited Eddie to come and play the part of Jack Benny in an Old
Radio Convention recreation directed by Herb Ellis. Needless to say, we
all had a wonderful time.

Over the years, we kept in contact, and in September of 2009, Larry
interviewed him for an on line Old radio site, called: "Radio Out Of The
Past". Eddi was truly a very nice, genuine, classy man who we had the
highest respect for.

Portions of that interview make up this week's show.

Our deepest sympathies go to Carolyn and the entire family.

Eddie was a truly wonderful man and we will miss him greatly.

During the interview Eddie stated that they just don't make people like
they did in earlier times. Well, the same can be said of Eddie. He was
truly an inspiration and he will live on in our memory as a truly
incredible human being.

May God bless his memory, and the entire Carroll family.

LUM and ABNER
with Guest Jack Benny, from 03-10-39.

THE JACK BENNY SHOW
04-11-48 for Lucky Strike Cigarettes.
This is the third of several shows we will air through May 9 1948. The
story line has to do with Jack borrowing Ronald Colman's Oscar. Jack is
robbed and looses the Oscar.
Featuring Jack Benny, Mary Livingston
Guests are Charles Farroll, and Paul Lucas.
Written by Milt Josefsberg, George Balzer, Sam Perrin, and John
Tackaberry. Heard on NBC.

Subject: Treasures among us

On a recent visit to Los Angeles, my wife and I dropped by the main branch
of the [removed] Public Library, a venue we toured maybe a decade ago. Once
again I was genuinely impressed with the vast storehouse of knowledge
contained there. It is a magnanimous facility holding tens of thousands
(billions possibly?) of volumes. The size of this repository overwhelms
casual visitors. I was equally overcome by the fact that -- unlike a number
of public libraries of which I am aware -- [removed]'s caretakers obviously feel
it's important to retain books that were printed many years ago, including
the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rather than tossing them out to
make room for newer works, they simply expand an area of interest as more
recent tomes are added. What a novel idea (pardon the pun)!

In this immense treasure chest is an almost endless array of texts on radio
from many perspectives: concept and beginnings, history, technical
advances, governmental oversight, personalities, programs, marketing, impact
on American life, transition to television, etc. I discovered a number of
gems from several who contribute to this list. It was also surprising to
find no fewer than nine of my own works on those shelves. I could have
spent an entire day perusing the diverse collection embracing many texts I
never before knew existed.

Several other great American cities have similar collections (I've run into
a few on rare searches). How fortunate for those who live near enough to be
able to personally examine their treasure chests on a routine basis (not
just via Internet -- there's nothing to compare with holding a book in one's
own hand).

I liked the words etched in stone above the [removed] structure's front entrance:
"Books alone are liberal and free: They give to all who ask. They
emancipate all who serve them faithfully." My sentiments. Books foster
inquiry and proffer a value that is irreplacable. How grand that a few
cities are preserving them so extensively.

Subject: SOS regarding Sandra Michael

David Siegel's plea for the vital statistics on OTR writer Sandra
Michaels sent me scurrying through my files and reference book. Alas,
I could do no better than David did, but we (the OTR community)
should collectively resolve to nail these facts down.

Ms. Michael was far more than just a soap opera writer. Donna Halper
reports that: "Once in a while, a soap opera tried to be more
cerebral. "Against the Storm,' written by Sandra Michael won a 1941
Peabody Award for being intelligently written and thought-provoking;
yet despite critical acclaim and better-than-average ratings, it was
taken off the NBC schedule in 1942."

Gerald Nachman in his book, "Raised on Radio," praises "Against the
Storm" in terms of its writing. It was "an unusual, idealistic,
polemical [removed] dared to deal with war and fascism". It was
one of only two soap operas to win a Peabody Award, cited as "a case
of merit in a field of mediocrity."

As Derek Tague pointed out, sometimes the most-recent things an
oldtime radio actor is noted for is their more recent TV work. I couldn't for
the life of me remember the other John Forsythe TV show I remember watching
him in. It was called To Rome with Love about an American assigned to work in
Italy for his business (which I think was a magazine but can't remember) and I
didn't want to cheat by looking it up. I'll bet, as usual, Mr. Forsythe's
radio work gets shortchanged in favor of the TV work but we know better, don't
we? He did have a long and fruitful life and was pretty busy throughout, even
in the later years. Larry Hughes

When I think of Eddie Carroll, the first word that comes to mind is "joy."
Making people laugh (and Eddie made so many people laugh) gave him (and them)
such great joy.

In 2007 I had the pleasure of directing Eddie, both as Jiminy Cricket in
"Pinocchio" and as Jack Benny in "The Fred Allen Show", at the REPS Radio
Showcase in Seattle. I've rarely had so much fun in my life, and by the end of
the weekend we had really become the best of friends. It's been my privilege
to direct Eddie many times since then, in everything from "Burns and Allen" to
"The Great Gildersleeve," and he was always the consummate professional, ready
to give his all to entertain the audience. In "Gildersleeve," Eddie's "Peavy"
was every bit as good as his Jack Benny. The first time he opened his mouth as
Peavy, everyone gasped in astonishment.

The amazing thing about Eddie as Jack Benny was that it wasn't just an
impersonation-- he actually became Jack Benny. He once told me that the
greatest compliment he ever received was when Dennis Day attended his one-man
show. After the performance, Dennis came up to Eddie and said, "I closed my
eyes, and I heard Jack. I opened my eyes, and I saw Jack."

It's a testament to Eddie's great talent, and his dedication to creating the
true Jack Benny, that often his funniest moments were when he ad-libbed
something, in character.

Last year at the REPS Radio Showcase I directed Eddie in a re-creation of "The
Jack Benny Program." One member of our cast couldn't be there for our
rehearsal because he was in a "Lone Ranger" re-creation going on at the same
time next-door. We made do without him, but then we came to the point in the
script at which some Mexican bandits come riding up on their horses. I cued
the sound of hoofbeats. Nothing. The engineer yelled across the stage, "Where
are the hoofbeats?" and the sound effects person yelled back, "They're using
them next door for 'The Lone Ranger'." Eddie placed his hand on his cheek,
looked out toward the audience, and in a pitch-perfect, exasperated Jack Benny
delivery, said, "Oh, fine. Now the HORSE has a conflict." I literally fell on
the floor laughing.

Eddie Carroll was a joy to watch, a joy to work with, and a joy to know. He
was real class act, and I'll miss him.

If it's any consolation, Andy, the first thing I thought of when I
heard of Mr. Forsythe's passing was, indeed, "Bachelor Father." It
just goes to show you that OTR fans have more affinity for the
television that coincided with the OTR era.

It's worth noting that "Bachelor Father" began alternating with Jack
Benny on CBS. It later moved to NBC and then ABC, giving it the
unusual distinction of running on all three networks. I don't know
if any other sitcom has achieved that distinction.
