Subject: Current issue: RADIO RECALL
This month's full-color issue of RADIO RECALL went out today via PDF to
subscribers who chose that venue. Other subscribers, who requested the B & W
hard copy, will be mailed theirs in about two weeks.
Featured article, entitled "Five Dollars and Change" is by John C. Abbott,
the author the 3-volume "Johnny Dollar" series. Abbott, who covered Bob
Bailey in a prior issue, now discusses the other five Dollars (Charles
Russell, Edmond O'Brien, John Lund, Bob Readick and Mandel Kramer) and two
auditionees who didn't make the cut (Dick Powell and Gerald Mohr.)
OTR author Michael Hayde, who is working on a new book about Hollywood actor,
Harold Langdon, has an article about the radio work of that star and the
difficulty of obtaining audio copies of those shows. Also in this issue, Adam
Roslewicz has a review of "Gunsmoke: The Musical," now in pre-Broadway
tryouts at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Prodigious author, JIm
Cox, relates an usual tale of radio actress Patricia Ryan, whose tragic death
may have been foretold in a radio play in which she performed years earlier.
Our "Ask the Expert" column has Clarence Rundeen, Jr. deciphering the riddle
of "Big Chief Windbag" with which Art Linkletter tortured listeners for 30
consecutive programs in 1948, until a winner finally won the new house and
car.
All this, plus details on upcoming OTR conventions, a thumbnail sketch of
Jack Benny and Dick Powell in 1934, Letters to the Editor, a special OTR
quiz, and a reproduction of a 1925 Crosley ad, offering radios for $ 16 and
up.
Obviously only MWOTRC members will receive this issue, but if you'd like to
sample a back issue in PDF format, email me <otrpiano@[removed]; with
"Sample issue" in the subject line. NOTE: this freebie offer applies only to
those who have not previously requested a free issue this year. (Thirteen
folks took us up on a similar offer in February so, alas, they are not
eligible.)
Any Digester can go to our web site <[removed]> and view individual
articles from prior issues. Membership info is available on site in case you

CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 21
A 1938 Chase & Sanborn Hour episode was part of radio history. This
was the episode that aired at the same time of the broadcast of Orsen
Welles' "War of the Worlds." Listeners across the land turned their
radio dials to hear of the realistic "invasion" of earth (New Jersey).
Now listen to a sample of the Welles' broadcast along with an edited
version of the Chase & Sanborn Hour with Edgar Bergen and Charlie
McCarthy, a show that lost much of its audience on that Halloween night.
This show gave an amusing ghost story while Welles told a tale of
terror. And while Martians were "landing" on CBS, on NBC you could hear
how to get the Charlie McCarthy Radio Game from Chase & Sanborn.
Eddie Hubbard's Cupboard with more rare radio history made accessible
now with Jerry Haendiges' help. Eddie Hubbard was my friend and my
favorite all time radio DJ. Many performers and radio folks agree that
few if any were better than Eddie Hubbard. This show is presented
without my on air introductions or comments and is one of many radio
show tapes Eddie presented to me before he was killed in a car accident
near Dallas a few years ago. Eddie had a way of making every show
special. He loved doing radio and as always was his easy- going
professional and joyful self as he begins his nightly show, this time
showcasing recordings that were seldom if ever heard before, recordings
that were unique in some special way and accessible often just to Eddie
who had unique connections with many performers. This night he played
songs by a very young Doris Day, Woody Herman before he had his herd,
and Ted Weems before Elmo Tanner. Also on the show are Ozzie Nelson, Les
Brown, Harry James, Bea Wain and Larry Clinton, Jimmy Dorsey and more.
All of a sudden in the midst of these happy songs the San Francisco
Earthquake struck as the 3rd game of the World Series was about to begin
in the fall of 1989. Sixty-seven people lost their lives on that night,
and Eddie and the newsroom of Chicago's WJJD interrupted Eddie's normal
programming and reported it intermittently. This is for radio historians
and those who appreciate rare, remarkable, and mostly unheard of
recordings or transcriptions. The clip ends with a brief news summary of
the quake, bringing an abbreviated end to Eddie's playlist. No themes or
closings.
