Hello again --

Some more on the Phil Harris song; its tune originally had lyrics known as
"The Tailor's Son" or "The Chandler"s (candle-maker's) Wife." And it is
mildly risque, as R. R. King intimated in his recent posting to the OTR
digest.
If you're burning up with curiosity, you can find two versions of them at

In regard to an earlier post concerning the Chattanooga Old Time Radio Club,
Jim Adams and Rusty Wolfe were also instrumental in developing that
organization with Bob Axley. Axley credits Cincinnati's Bob Burchett with
mentioning Wolfe in a publication. Wolfe was selling shows and Axley became
a buyer. Wolfe told Axley he was also selling to Adams. One thing led to
another and those Rock City area enthusiasts got together at the foot of
Lookout Mountain and formed an OTR coterie that now consists of 10 or 12
members. Adams has been secretary-treasurer for many years. The resulting
Chattanooga Airwaves has been issued every other month for the last [removed]
years.

Hi [removed] New Year! I

I'm feeling guilty. Please list your address again, on site, or to me
personally, on how one can make a donation to you, to keep our OTR site
flourishing!! You not only deserve much praise, but funding for ALL your work, and I'm
sure thankless hours! It would be a great way for we, friends of OTR to begin
the New Year--by making a contribution. I'll kick it off by making a small
donation.

Now, on to my other reason for writing, on this snowy Sunday, here in the
mountains of Western Colorado:)

Member, Stephen A. Kallis, Jr. in his interesting writing, about the value
of radio premiums, not just monetarily but emotionally, struck an old heart
string on me.
For many years now, I have toyed with the idea of opening a radio premium
museum! It originated because of my LOVE for the business of 'radio,' which was
my 'on-air' life, as a radio personality, for over forty years, in Houston,
South Florida, Boston--for almost 20 years and at the legendary WLW in
Cincinnati. Sorry, Charlie, here's a shameless plug for my book, RADIO PRO, which
will be published by Bear Manor Media, this June, if I meet my deadline, Ben:)
I, like Stephen and so many other kids, who grew up in the 40's and early
50's, would race home from school
to check the mailbox to see if that little brown box from Post Office 'Box
77' in Chicago or the masked-man's post office address in Minneapolis,
Minnesota had arrived with the latest Lone Ranger or Sgt. Preston premium. It was a
tremendous thrill, that even to this day is hard to describe. It's one of
those experiences, you really had to live, to fully understand! Listening to The
Lone Ranger's announcer/narrator, Fred Foy---(my friend, who is significantly
mentioned and quoted in my book)----got me hooked, at nine years old, on a
career in radio. You can only imagine my excitement, years later, in my
career while on the radio in Boston of having Fred as 'OUR ANNOUNCER' for a day!
More on that story in my book, RADIO PRO.

Back to the idea for a radio premium, museum. When I was forced to leave
radio, after a 41 year career, in
April of 2004, because of three nodes on my vocal cords and loss of voice
(voice has returned, thank God, but not the quality necessary to return to the
air) we moved to property we had owned for years, in Western Colorado. My
dream then and now is to open a small museum in the barn on our property. There
are a couple of really good reasons why this hasn't been realized, as of yet,
[removed] a 'lack of funds.' As I'm sure many of you know, being on
a 'fixed income' (retired at 65, this past June) doesn't afford one much in
the way of extra's, especially, for one's personal dream, like 'The Little
Radio Premium Museum of the West.'

The barn is a neat ole two story building in need of refurbishing.
Structurally it's sound as a rock, but hasn't been 'looked after' for awhile. I'm
hoping to tackle it this summer, but, please know, I'm a radio guy, who talked
for a [removed] knowledge of hammer and nail is something Bob Villa handles:)
 Another reason, my
wife Kim and I have been reluctant to move ahead with the project is (1) how
to go about making it a non profit entity. Our intention is to show off
these 'little gems' for future radio generations and not to make [removed]
secondly, lack of collectibles to place on display. I have quite a few from my
own personal collection, including, Sgt. Preston, The Lone Ranger, Tom Mix and
Orphan Annie, but hardly enough for a museum. I'm constantly on the lookout
for other premiums to add to my collection, with the thought of putting it
'gently' away in a box, until that special little museum becomes a reality.
Often times, as Stephen pointed out, the premiums are priced way too high and
out of my reach, financially. But, I keep searching!

I present this to [removed] anyone have thoughts on how to proceed with 'my
dream' and hopefully the dream of others, like Stephen ...whom to contact
for grants, [removed] do any of you have premiums, you would consider donating
for such a museum. No, I'm not trying to add to my collection!! Perhaps, the
way to proceed, would be to display one's 'personal premiums' collection in
such a museum for a period of time, say six months or a year, with the idea of
returning the collection to the rightful owner.

I'm open for any and all ideas, suggestions and welcome your input, here on
the digest or off line. Most importantly, do you think the idea of a museum
for radio premiums is a good one, or simply an ole radio guy's pipe dream?!
Oh yes, one other thing, my wife just reminded me [removed] barn
restoration project begins---right after my book is completed---in June. Any help is
appreciated!!! Come on out to Western [removed]'re high up in the
mountains, with bright blue skies and healthy clean air. You may, however,
have to put up with a straw bed in the barn and be prepared to share it with
a few deer, who have the total run of our property:)) Thanks Stephen, for
giving me the impetus to 'perhaps' resurrect my old dream!
Thank you, for giving me so much space to talk about something I'd love to
see become reality, a Museum
 for RADIO PREMIUMS.
Thanks and God Bless
Joe Martelle

With the recent discussion on this site about Phil Harris and his
ditty "The Thing" someone must have the entire Harris lyrics. I would
appreciate it if they could be posted on this digest.

Thanks

Bill
