Subject: RE: Johnny Dollar's Expense Account

Where'd he get the money is what Chris Holm was [removed]

It still is the case that consultants with regular client companies can get
it from various places, including credit cards.

First, you may have an ongoing business that allows you to do it. I don't
know if we ever get a glimpse of Johnny's per diem (daily rate) amount. But I
think it must have been quite good.

Second, many of Johnny's clients were regular users of his services. Though
it's never said, he might have been on retainer, which is a monthly fee paid
just to have you on call or as a prepayment for services that might be
required.

Third, Johnny could have had them put up money in advance. As a consultant
myself, in a totally different field, clients pay 50% up front.

Fourth, he could have used credit cards. Diner's Club was started in 1949,
and American Express cards came into use at the end of 1958. Surely Johnny
would have been on the cutting edge of expense technology for his time, and
was probably an early Diner's Club member. Cards were not accepted
everywhere, of course, as they are today. So he probably handled things in
all three [removed] out of pocket and reimbursed later, against an advance
payment, and on credit card and reimbursed later.

We know Johnny had quite a business. There's never an episode where he's
looking for work. Even when he tries to go fishing, there's always a dead
body around or some swindler to spoil the day.

Perhaps the series should have been called "It's a Billable Life" as Johnny
found ways to bill everything short of breathing back to his client.

And to think he did it all without Quicken :)

Regards to all
Joe W

Subject: Two Johnny Dollars ...

An interesting moment ... two Johnny Dollars on the same screen!

[removed]

Its a free, on-line viewing of Birdman of Alcatraz. Edmond O'brien (one of
the first actors to play the part of Johnny Dollar) appears at the beginning
and end as well as narrates the movie.

Two hours and 24 minutes into the movie (you can skip to that time instead
of watching the entire movie) is the final scene. "Birdman" is being
transfered and is met on the docks by 3 reporters.

The Internet Movie Databas ([removed]) states that one of these
reporters is Robert Bailey ... the BOB Bailey who also played Johnny Dollar
starting in 1955.

My guess (from the few photos of him that I have seen) as to which reporter
is Bailey is the one with the salt-and-pepper overcoat and dark hat with no
hat band, on the right side of the screen as they start walking towards the
camera. But when this man speaks, the voice is not the voice I have always
known from Johnny Dollar and Let George do it.

Can anyone recognize Bob Bailey? Is he one of the three reporters and is he
the one that I think that he is?

Chris asked how Johnny Dollar financed his expenses, and it is a good
question.

The first reference of travelers checks the I can find is in "The Midas Touch
Matter", from July 1956. Three years later in July 1959, Johnny mentions
using a personal American Express card in "The Cautious Celibate Matter".

Going back even earlier, to very beginning, Johnny was often forced to take
cases because the "wolf was at the door".

Like so many things in OTR, the messy little details of how things got paid
for is a mystery. Johnny may have had an operating account at the bank, or he
may have been given an advance. How a person got paid or took care of the
basic necessities of life were overlooked in favor of a 30 minute program.

But the lack of details only makes listening more enjoyable because we are not
bothered by the messy little details.

Does anyone have any idea why Ireene Wicker and Kellogg's parted company?
They appear to have done so in late 1938.

I believe she started her 15 min. show for kids (and Kellogg's), "The Singing
Lady" in 1931. As far as I can tell, the show was quite popular. It appears
she took a brief break once Kellogg's cancelled her show, but stayed a staple
on radio, and later television, for a couple decades after she and Kellogg's
were no longer a team.

Just curious.

Kathy

On Paul Harvey, Jr's comment that his mom and dad "invented" modern news:

As another current radio commentator who is in the news lately likes to say,
"Most people think history starts with the day that they're born."

But I think we should all give PH, Jr a break. One, it was said through grief
and two, it was said by a son who was very proud of his parents. We should
all be so loved and admired by our offspring.

I've read much (especially in Jim Cox's excellent books) about the time in
1960 when radio soap opera came to an end. Now I'm wondering if, 50 years
later, the same thing will happen to TV soap operas. An article I read
recently said that the remaining daytime soaps have falling ratings (a
fraction of what they were in the 1980s), drastically reduced budgets, and
are firing actors right and left to cut costs. Does it seem as if some of the
same things are getting ready to happen to broadcast TV in 2010 that happened
to radio 50 years earlier?

That was 14 May 1948. Or perhaps 15 May by the time it got broadcast

There are too many similarities between the stories to be coincidences.
Also, the Suspense show was written by Peter Barry who was a very prolific
writer of The Shadow (on radio), Suspense, and other radio and TV shows.

I'd be interested in seeing other recycled plots posted here.

you would suggest?

story or should I say "here's the rest of the story"that showed how
important he was to ABC, was how he stayed in Chicago.
Many years ago ABC decided that all the programing should be located
in New York. When Paul was told that he would have to go to NYC, He told
the bosses "no" I'll stay in Chicago., and he did. ABC Chicago Studios
and offices are locate on State St. across the street from the Chicago
Theater. ABC gave Paul a studio with a chair, a table and microphone
and offices, an Engineer and his secretary of many years. His broadcasts
were the radio program from ABC Chicago. He did broadcast from Arizona too.
He was a mid westerner, and stayed one.

As an aside to the comments on Og Son of Fire, the radio show, I have an
acquaintance who actually has stacks of transcriptions from the Og radio
program. He bought all of them along with a transcription player purchased
specifically to listen to the disks back in the late early 1970s.

He paid pretty good money for these things, and as a result he will not
let any copies of them out, but he would probably sell them, since he's
getting well up in years, except that now that all the radio dealers have
been put
out of business by the internet and the MP3 format, nobody is in a position
to scrape up enough money to buy these and get them out to the hobby.

I suspect there are other cases like this, where some collector paid

has instead decided to take the material to the grave with him.
