Subject: The Radio Wife With the Visible Hands

"Karen Lerner" <[removed]@[removed]; asked:
a customer who was trying to figure out the name of a radio detective
"He was married, but you never saw the wife's face. All you saw were her
hands, as she was feeding him dinner. She did have a speaking part as well."

This is certainly an intriguing question. Of
course, all radio characters are only seen in the
mind's eye; conjuring up an image of a character
you can only "see" parts of would call for an
impressive degree of nuance on the part of the
writer. The fact that she had a "speaking part,"
but in such a way as to let the listener know her
face could not be seen and was not to be
visualized, would have been an audio drama tour
de force.

I haven't a clue. But one such character occurs
to me; it was Sam, the operator who took the TV
Richard Diamond's messages and offered him solace
and reassurance from her switchboard; she was the
closest thing that gumshoe had to a wife (I think
he had a girlfriend, but nobody remembers
anything about her), and, like Dick Diamond, we
heard only Sam's sexy voice. We did have one
advantage over Mr. Diamond; we also got to see
her sexy legs, which turned out to belong to Mary
Tyler Moore.

Before it became a TV show Richard Diamond WAS a
radio show with a different star, Dick Powell.
Might it be possible the gentleman is merging the
two in his mind, and misremembering Sam's
relationship to Dick? Just a vagrant notion.

Subject: Handy Question

Karen Lerner presents a query from a customer:

According to the customer, "He was married, but you never saw the wife's
face. All you saw were her hands, as she was feeding him dinner. She did
have a speaking part as well." I asked if the customer was maybe
thinking about a detective on television or in a movie, but was assured
that the detective in question was on the radio airwaves during the
1930s.

Theater of the Mind or not, I doubt that the presence of the wife's hands
alone on radio seems a stretch. However, a number of OTR shows migrated
to TV, and some also were featured in film. It could be that there was
an OTR series that when translated to little or silver screen showed only
the wife's hands.

Subject: Mystery Detective

Karen Lerner asked:

According to the customer, "He was married,
but you never saw the wife's face. All you saw were her hands, as she was
feeding him dinner. She did have a speaking part as well." I asked if the
customer was maybe thinking about a detective on television or in a movie,
but was assured that the detective in question was on the radio airwaves
during the 1930s. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Being radio, the distinguishing characteristic of only seeing the wife's
hands when feeding him dinner would have been in his own mind as it would be
extremely odd for a radio program describe to the audience HOW to view the
picture. Radio dramas give you the sound effects and the dialogue and you
make your own pictures.

If the customer was thinking of television, it could be one of many
possibilities, perhaps RICHARD DIAMOND, PRIVATE DETECTIVE (based on a radio
series) in which Diamond's secretary (played by Mary Tyler Moore) was only
heard and the only physical features shown on camera was her legs, nothing
more.

I have learned over the years (many times) that when a customer "recalls"
something they've seen or heard, it is possible that their memory isn't what
it used to be, and what they are looking for does not really exist cause it
was never broadcast (or at the least, broadcast the way they remember it).
Sounds like this customer is one of them - looking for something you can
search and search and eventually come to the conclusion that there was no
such show and his memory is faded a bit.

Course, there could be such a radio show and surprise everyone but unlikely
.. . .

Subject: Tune Of The Century with Rich Marco

Hello, does anyone have any info about this show? I've just been given a box
of over sixty tapes, two shows on each, with this show on it. I understand
the premise of the show, highlighting cylinders and 78s, with a lot of theme
shows, such as Billy Murray or Al Jolson, but does anyone have a log of show
dates or how many shows were done? This show, I understand, was only
broadcast in the Chicago area, some time in the 1980's, so while not
specifically OTR related, contains a lot of music from this period. Do you
know where the host, Rich Marco, is today, and if he is doing something in
radio? If there is a more appropriate list for this question, please let me
know, as a Google search yielded absolutely nothing, either on the show name
with Chicago or NPR, nor under Rich's name.
Thanks a lot.

Hello, relating to my other post on the radio show The Tune Of The Century,
I was told that a similar program called The Spirit Of 78, was broadcast
somewhere in the Northeast, perhaps Erie, Pennsylvania. Does anyone have any
info about this show? My friend, who is not on this list, says he only has a
few of these, and wonders how much survives in collectors' circles?
Thanks a lot.

According to Albert Jack's _Red Herrings & White Elephants (The Origins of
the Phrases We Use Every Day)_ HarperCollins 2004 pg 163:

"Being on Cloud Nine describes a feeling of total happiness and content,
or euphoria. Between the l930s and l950s the American Weather Bureau
divided clouds into classes numbered one to nine. The highest, cloud nine,
is the cumulonimbus, which reaches 40,000ft and can appear as white
mountains, even on a sunny day. During the l950s a popular US radio
show Johnny Dollar, ran an episode during which the hero was often
knocked unconscious and then transported to 'cloud nine' where he
was revived and lived to be a hero again in other episodes. It was through
that association that 'cloud nine' passed into the English language as a
popular phrase for the peak of existence."

  True?

Subject: Farm Reports

I'm about a month behind on my digests, so I hope this
hasn't been covered by someone else. WSVA, 550 AM,
gives farm reports each morning during the drive time
broadast, and has a half hour dedicated to agriculture
each afternoon at 12:30. They have a dedicated farm
reporter, who also has a TV show broadcast here on
public television. WSVA serves the Shenandoah Valley,
some areas east of the Blue Ridge, and the Potomac
Highlands of eastern West Virginia. The letters have
always been said to stand for We Serve Virginia
Agriculture. WSVA is also quite aware of it's own
history, having been on the air since 1935. Last year
they broadcast a two hour long 70th anniversary show,
looking back at themselves. For country and bluegrass
buffs, Mac Wiseman got his start singing on WSVA in
the mid '40s.
