This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 123

"COCONUT GROVE AMBASSADORS" ON THE AIR WITH GUS ARNHEIM

Next it's off to the west coast Coconut Grove in 1931 to enjoy dancing
to the "Sweet and Lovely" music of Gus Arnheim and his orchestra. Well,
that's what it was meant to sound like on radio from the Transco
(Transcription Company of America) recording studio transcriptions
labeled "Coconut Grove Ambassadors," a series of highly popular
syndicated programs. By design there are no initial radio announcements
and no closings because those would be left to the individual radio
stations across the country. To audiences it seemed that the music came
directly from the fancy and famous Hotel Ambassador Coconut Grove in Los
Angeles.

On this episode of Classics & Curios Song & Smile Time we feature Gus
Arnheim and his orchestra which, of course, actually did play at the
Coconut Grove when it was known as the most famous night club in the
world. Arnheim was called "The Star of Entertainers and Entertainer of
Stars" and said to have the "Favorite Orchestra of the Motion Picture
Colony."

At various times the orchestra included famous performers like Russ
Columbo, Fred MacMurray, Stan Kenton, and Bing Crosby, but only Columbo
and MacMurray could likely have been part of this episode's series. The
orchestra featured a strong brass section and precise performers, along
with some fine vocalists like Loyce Whiteman, Donald Novis, George
Gramlich, and Jack Smith. The singing Three Ambassadors were Jack Smith,
Al Teeter, and Martin Sperzel.

You will hear four fifteen minute programs with songs like "I'm Through
with Love," "When Yuba Plays the Tuba," "Whistling in the Dark," "Just
One More Chance," "Diane," " Can't You Read Between the Lines," "Making
Faces at the Moon," "Dancing with Daffodils," "Any Corner is a Cozy
Corner (with a Sweet Girl Like You)," and "Sugar." The announcer
apparently was Tom Jeffries, a popular west coast personality.

For your visual as well as audio enjoyment, online blogs reveal restored
Warner Brothers Vitaphone short films from 1928 and 1929 of Arnheim and
his band doing delightful and energetic performances of great tunes like
his theme song "Sweet and Lovely" at the Coconut Grove.

The "Coconut Grove Ambassadors" radio series also featured the bands of
Anson Weeks, Phil Harris, Ted Fio Rito, and others, including Jimmie
Grier whose orchestra we'll feature on our next Classics & Curios episode.

For now, get on your fancy duds and dancing shoes and "join" the
Hollywood celebrities at the lavish Grove in 1931 to dine and dance to
each song playing for four minutes or more.

Partial scripts for the "Lucky Strike Hour" can be found at
[removed] For more on radio "at the dawn of the 1930's"
see "Radio's Forgotten Years" online at [removed] by radio historian
Elizabeth McLeod who discovered "Lucky Strike Hour" recordings made on a
Victor home recording device.

If, like me, you enjoy timeless wholesome radio shows from yesterday or
especially from some 20, 50, or even 80 years ago, perhaps Gertrude
Stein was right when she said, "We are always the same age inside." --

Subject: June issue RADIO RECALL

The full-color June 2014 issue of RADIO RECALL was emailed via PDF on June
1st to subscribers who specified that transmission method, while the hard
copy in B & W will be snail mailed to the other subscribers on or after June
10th.

This issue is a tribute to the 30th anniversary of Metro Washington OTR Club,
founded in May 1984. In view of this, the issue was expanded from 12 to 16
pages, starting off with an anniversary message from President Fred Berney.
Within this issue will be found the written memories of four charter members
who attended that very first meeting: Marsha Bush, Ron Barnett. Mark Bush,
and Phil Kania, all of whom have been continuous members since joining.

Cort Vitty's article on "Radio's Musical Darlings" tells the fascinating
story of the meteoric rise in the mid-50s of Patience and Prudence McIntyre
(respectively 14 and 11 years old) who hit the radio charts with their first
song, "Tonight You Belong to Me." John Abbott takes us down-under for a
review of the career of Grace Gibson, the Texas born lady who successfully
marketed numerous American radio programs in Australia. Some of these shows,
with American scripts and Australian casts, lasted longer on the air down
there than they did in the [removed], [removed] "Portia Faces Life" and "Doctor Paul."

Popular OTR author, Jim Cox, turns book reviewer as he examines the new book,
"The Birth of Top 40 Radio" written by Richard Fatherley and David
MacFarland. Up next, Rob Farr reviews two books on Orson Welles' recorded
conversations and compares the two in tone, factual content, and emphasis. He
rates them both high: "My Lunches with Orson" edited by Peter Biskind and
"Orson Welles and Roger Hill" written by Todd Tarbox.

Other interesting bits in this issue: What did President Obama's recent "OTR
stop" actually involve? Which OTR clubs have disappeared in the last 20
years? Is it true that the CEO and owner of Quaker Oats, who promoted his
cereals as "Shot From Guns", was in real life bitterly opposed to all warfare
and weaponry?

All this plus two full pages of "Letters to the Editor", details on all
upcoming OTR events in the USA, and a short summary on the current status of
Grace Gibson Productions by Australian collector and researcher, Ian Grieve.
