Subject: Finding the Corwin Documentary
I haven't seen "A Note Of Triumph: Norman Corwin's Golden Years" myself,
but I sure want to.
I'm told that HBO has plans to run it -- but I don't get HBO, because it
costs extra. I'm old enough to resent having to pay for what used to be
free, like TV and radio. I do it, but I make a point of resenting it as
often as possible. Helps my cholesterol count.
Another rumor says that the Documentary short subject nominees may all
be released together on DVD, but so far that's just scuttlebutt. John
Weber is moving heaven and earth to try and get a recording, and
promises that any info he comes across will be posted prominently on the
[removed] website -- so you can check there from time
to time.
Eric Simonson says there have been offers from several distributors for
the documentary, but further, deponent knoweth not.
If anybody gets a lead on finding this film, on TV, in theatre, or on
disc, please post the info! And if anybody gets a chance to see it --
please let us know what you think.
After all, how often does Oscar nod to radio?
Richard Fish

Subject: Music 'Til Dawn
In Chicago, Music 'Til Dawn was locally produced by CBS-owned WBBM, and
hosted, at least from the 1960s through its conclusion, by Jay Andres.
It ran from Midnight-5:45 [removed] Monday night-Friday (or maybe Saturday)
night, at which time John Harrington had a news-and-comment show. WBBM
was off from Midnight-5:45 [removed] Sunday night/Monday morning. Eventually,
WBBM's all-news programming took over the overnight shift, as was the
case in New York and Los Angeles.
Andres ended up at WGN as a successor to Franklyn MacCormack, and after
WGN ended all-night music, was briefly at WDCB-FM, a professionally-run
college station in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago. He left the air
after a fall at home quite a few years ago, and have heard nothing about
him since.
Does any 50 KW AM station run an all-night music show anymore? The air
used to be dotted with them. Even after Music 'Til Dawn was canceled,
WGN, WJR, KMOX, WCCO and KOA (those that I know of) had similar shows.

While
one would assume that a show occurring this recently would have left
some audio copies for us to enjoy today, apparently this is not the
case. Or at least, none have yet surfaced.
Somewhere, in one of those radio commercial compendiums, I have the open for
a "Music 'Til Dawn" that plays up the sponsor ID for American Airlines and
references to being aboard a plane. I have no idea on the date for it but I
think it mentions Detroit somehow. I think it's also part of a 1967 "History
of
Radio Advertising" presentation of some sort, so it would be perhaps no later
than '67.

Subject: OTR on Hold
The Vermont Country Store has a terrific idea I just hear while placing
my order! OTR On Hold! Many companies use background music or perhaps
a comedy script to entertain while you wait for customer service in
cue. The Orton Family has created a most unique audio experience - a
friendly announcement followed by OTR excerpts! How clever, eh?
Now, that's using the 'ol bean when you're in the nostalgia business and
want to relate to the older demographic who are responding to order from
your catalog. Kudos to The Vermont Country Store still in Vermont, of
course, for not outsourcing live telephone operators and for helping to
promote OTR this way. (Disclaimer applies, just a satisfied customer.)
Maybe others in business can find a creative way like this to use audio
tracks and keep the OTR hobby growing strong.

Subject: Music 'Til Dawn
This was a great show for those of us who had trouble falling asleep at
night. The late George Walsh, who did the program for several years out of
KNX, Los Angeles, told me that he did not choose the music. Now that I know
that it was done in other cities, each by local announcers, they probably
played the same selections during one given night, to all the outlets. That
would be interesting to find out. I should have asked Mr. Walsh if he knew
who selected the music. I guess I was more interested in the other great
local shows which he announced, such as "Matinee", a daily, musical variety
show with an audience, featuring singers such as Marion Morgan, Billy
Strange (a Western singer), Harry Babbitt, formerly of the Kay Keyser
orchestra, and musician Billy Liebert.
I digress! Back to "Music 'Til Dawn". Another local announcer, staff
announcer at KNX who stayed up throughout the night to do the show, I
believe before George Walsh, was Mel Baldwin, no relation to great announcer
Bill Baldwin.

Subject: Wonder Show question
I listened to a "Wonder Show" program last evening from Oct. 1938
that was on [removed] and have couple of
questions about it. Dunninger had only two lines regarding the program,
and that being dates and times when it was on.
1. Was that Gale Gordon I heard as announcer? I don't recall hearing
his complete name, only being referred to as "Gale" but sure sounded
like him.
2. Lucille Ball was on the show but instead of being a guest it was
more like she was a regular, since she sort of came and went and just
sort of "there".
And Artie Auerbach was on the show. I love him. Whenever he makes
an appearance I exclaim "_Mr Kitzel!_" to myself. <g> Boy, he was a
one busy guy. He popped up all over the place it seems.
TIA
Joe
PS: I heard our own Hal ("I'm having a senior moment") Stone on Chuck
Shaden's show Tuesday night. (Working on Saturday's and thank goodness
for the archived programs!). Hal, you now have my interest piqued in
that new book! :)
