On July 26 and 27, 2008, American Radio Theater will do a two-day workshop,
or rather, boot camp, in Seattle. The shows that will be worked on will be Our
Miss Brooks, the episode Animals at School, and the audition for First
Hundred Years (from 1949). They will be directed by David Van Meter, husband
to
Rhoda Williams, old-time-radio actress on Father Knows Best. Esther Geddes
McVey will be performing with us that weekend, as well as the rest of the
ART
ensemble.
On Sunday night, both shows will be performed in front of an audience at the
Mainstage Comedy Club, next door to the Seattle Center. The show starts at
8. If you're in Seattle, please drop in.

Jay asks about Nicodemus.
Nicodemus (or Nick O'Demus) was a pseudomyn of Nick Swewart, the black
actor who was the voice of Brer Bear in Disney's Song of the South, and
he played Lightnin' on the TV version of Amos & Andy.

Is there a OTP date base that is equal to IMDb (Internet Movie Database)?
There are other sites that are listing detailed info on TV episodes. I would
like to see on on radio episodes. [removed] is the best so far
as to listing radio shows with brief info on the episode. I would like to see
the features like listing by performers. This would be a great project for a
board webmaster. I am to busy trying to archive Red Skelton's life. July 18th
will be his 95th birthday.

Subject: Nick O Demus
I believe Nick O Demus played "Lightnin" on Amos n' Andy. At least on the TV
series. He also played the African guide on Ramar of the Jungle in the
1950's. His real name would have been Horace Stewart or Nick Stewart. At
least I think this would be the same person.

Subject: Re: Earplay
Hello again --
I am reminded of another ntr (new time radio) dramatization series which I
believe was broadcasted on NPR. It was called the Mind's Eye, and it
dramatized great works of literature as well. I remember the wide-eyed look
of my younger, junior-high-school-age daughter when I played the Mind's Eye
dramatization of Franz Kafka's "Metamorphosis," about a young salesman who
awakened in the morning to find that he had turned into a giant cockroach.
His voice was enhanced by a gurgling sound used as a control frequency that
made him sound underwater for most of the time. A really chilling program.
According to John Dunning's great radio encyclopedia, it was the most
serious attempt to revive radio drama, was produced from 1972 to the 1990s,
and attracted such playwrights as Edward Albee, David Mamet, and Arthur
Kopit, and included such actors as Brock Peters, Meryl Streep, Lurene
Tuttle, Leon Ames, and others, many of whom had never done radio acting.
Does anyone else remember Earplay or where its programs can be obtained?
