Subject: the whistler and all who played him
In a message dated 2/18/03 8:53:04 PM, Tom Z., one of the nameless terrors of
which they dare not speak, writes:
***I agree with your choice of Bill Forman, but you did leave off one
Whistler ... Bill Johnstone, who played the title role in the 1948 national
summer series directed by William Robson and sponsored by Household Finance.
I'd place Bill Johnstone second to Forman in the role, though my ex preferred
Johnstone's version. --ANTHONY TOLLIN***

Subject: WB's Lone Ranger is a pilot
The January 17, 2003 issue of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY featured a photo of the
Lone Ranger and Tonto in the film that someone on the digest mentioned.
According to Entertainment Weekly: Westward, no! While a hip remake of THE
LONE RANGER will air on the WB, it's unlikely to go to series as previously
planned. With a projected cost of $[removed] million per episode (from $500,000
to $1 million more than a SMALLVILLE episode), the tale of a young masked
cowboy (DAWSON'S CREEK's Chad Murray) and his Native American sidekick
(AMERICAN OUTLAWS' Nathaniel Arcand) proved too pricey for the net, so it'll
air as a two-hour movie on Feb. 26 instead. "You have to rent Western
towns, and they are few and far between," says exec producer Susanna Daniels
of the exorbitant costs. "And you need a lot of horses and extras to fill
up a Western town. It's an enormous undertaking." The WB may change its
mind if the RANGER movie corrals an audience; meanwhile, NBC and TNT have
expressed interest in creating their own take on the franchise, but no
deal's been made. "There's certainly a place for a sexy Western on network
TV," says Daniels.
Having seen the photo in the magazine, I can say that this is not going to
be a joyride. The pilot movie is definately aimed toward a younger audience
as the Lone Ranger and Tonto are both played by teenagers. As they use to
say on 42nd Street, "sex sells," but this is road kill. The only plus side
I can see coming from this movie, is that it will make me, personally, enjoy
and appreciate the original radio and TV shows even more.

Subject: OTR and RealOne Player
I, a non-techie, enjoy listening to streaming or downloaded OTR on my
RealPlayer 7 Basic. But a few Web sites require the newer RealOne Player for
OTR-listening (for example, Jerry H's portion of the Olde Tyme Radio
Network).
So I clicked on the free update 'button' on my Player and downloaded the
RealOne Player but I cancelled the installation process because I'd read
that to avoid having RealPlayer take over unnecessary control of many audio
and video features on the computer I ought to, when I download
RealOnePlayer, choose "Custom Install" and click/remove many checkmarks from
the series of boxes that would appear before their 'Install Wizard'
completes installation. But when I'd downloaded and started to install, as
I described above, no such custom-installing choice box had appeared before
the (final?) installation started to take place.
Can any Digester offer advice and/or instructions re custom-installing a
free RealOnePlayer to result in the least-intrusive installation that's
possible? Should I first delete/un-install my current RealPlayer (-- I
never custom-installed it, by the way) and start from scratch? Many thanks
in advance.

Subject: I lost an email question about KFI
Whoever wrote me an email Wednesday morning asking a question about the KFI
antenna and if it was ever on the roof of their building, please send me the
email again, if you can. I had problems with my Outlook Express today and
accidentally deleted and lost that particular email, and I can't even recall
your name.
I'm terribly sorry, but I hope you'll write me again and I'll answer your
question.
Thanks.

I suspect they're deliberately omitting Webb's name because of the wholesale
cheapening of his legacy that has gone on since the Aykroyd-Hanks movie was
released. Jack Webb is a joke to the under-40's that run the industry.
Lucky for them there WAS a Jack Webb, or none of 'em would have jobs today!
If I appear to be steamed, it's because I am.
As a Professor of Television Studies, I can assure you that the under 30
crowd who will someday run the industry are not laughing at Jack Webb. In
my classes, he is studied with the respect he deserves!

Subject: Dragnet-1966
In Volume 2003, Issue #43 Michael Hayde issued a heads-up to list members
that AMC would be showing "Dragnet 1966" February 19th at 9:55am. Since I
had never seen this particular television chapter of one my favorite OTR
shows, I tuned in with bated breath.
I enjoyed it a lot, but then again I enjoy pretty much anything Jack
Webb-related. And it was fun seeing many of the OTR greats--my Dad, for
some odd reason, recognized the voice of Vic Perrin but couldn't place him.
When I mentioned that Perrin was the famous "Do not attempt to adjust your
TV set" narrator from TV's "The Outer Limits," he shouted "THAT'S where I've
heard him from!"
I want to thank Michael for giving everyone a heads-up on this, since I
rarely turn on AMC anymore due to the changes that have transformed the
once-great movie channel into some kind of modern movies pimp. However,
since some folks likes chocolate and some likes vanilla--I respectfully
disagree with his assertion that "Dragnet 1966" is the best non-OTR Dragnet.
I'm personally partial to the 1954 theatrical release myself.

Subject: Re: Radio Spirits
I checked out a couple of Radio Spirits multi-show releases from my
local
library recently, and what I heard was appalling. In many cases,
commercials, intros etc. had been purposefully deleted. I noticed this
on
the "Science Fiction" and "Comedy" releases.
I assume you're referring to the Smithsonian 4 CD/4 cassette sets that
came out several years ago. I don't know why those were edited, but they
don't serve as good examples of the quality of Radio Spirits material.
Their stuff is very expensive, but I must admit, it's generally very good
quality. Usually, the two go hand in hand (see the 100 episode for $5
cds on ebay for an example of the opposite end of the spectrum).

Subject: Re: Radio Spirits
It sounds like you borrowed some of the older RSI Smithsonian collections.
If you check the copyright dates, I suspect you'll discover that they're
circa 1994-96. (I know the Smithsonian SCIENCE FICTION collection is of
that vintage, since it included my first historical booklet for RSI.
That does, indeed, appear to be the case now that you've mentioned it. The
Comedy and Science Fiction sets were all hacked up but the Jack Benny set was
not, all of those shows appeared to be complete. Unfortunately, the library
copy of the "Science Fiction" set did not include your booklet, I would love
to have seen it. Anyway, I am glad they dropped that idea, and it's
unfortunate my library has preserved such an ill-thought-out business
decision.
Someone else mentioned the possibility that these were AFRS shows, and I know
that's not the case with the specific ones I heard. That's because the shows
included sponsor id's and CBS/NBC system cues do appear in these shows and I
don't believe they would've appeared on that many AFRS shows, at least not as
commonly. Like I said I heard the "Suspense" "Donovan's Brain" two-parter
before and it had the commercials, part one closing and part two opening the
Radio Spirits version did not.

Martin Grams writes
That was the episode "SNARE FOR MURDER" and if I recall, Harry Bartell
injured himself on the set during filming, something about a rock on the
ground. The film crew cleared the ground for all rocks but when he fell,
he hit a rock and injured him. Any thoughts from mr. Bartell himself?
That is not quite what happened. I had to jump off a porch about four feet
