Subject: New old soap at Cincy

Last week Travis commented on his great time at Cincinnati and mentioned:
My lucky streak continued at the dinner, where I won a new old stock
box of Rinso, presumably from circa 1943. . . . A very neat little prize.
Thank you to whoever did that. Some tables had Oxydol, etc

At our table my daughter Leah was the lucky winner of the Super Suds box.
What made it extra special was that on the front of the box was a facsimile
ticket to the Sunday December 23, 1945 broadcast of "Blondie" at CBS
Hollywood. Travis is right, it is a very neat little prize. BUT, Travis,
did you look closely at it??? Look at the bottom. I think you will see
printed into the box, but looking very much like a white sticker that could
be removed but can't be removed, is a white circle that says in green
"[removed]", and below it a date of 2007 and a signature of Jerry D. Williams.
It's a reproduction!!!! A very good reproduction, however. It really looks
like the box has yellowed and has been sitting somewhere for more than 60
years, but it is brand spanking new.

Yes, thank you to whoever did it, and will you please tell us where you got
'em??!!! I want to get a full set. I've looked all over the internet, I've
Googled and Goggled every which way I could think of, but nothing shows up.
Since this group is smart enough to realize that the "1938" King Kong was
really a 1960s kiddie record, certainly you can dig up where to get some new
fake old boxes of soap.

Yes, in spite of really, really missing Hal, we had a great time at Cincy.

Best buy: a spindle of all 76 of Bob Gardner's new MP3 discs condensed to
47 discs for $49. If you wanted only ten or so of them at regular price you
would have paid that much. Great reference material -- got things I
wouldn't ordinarily buy "free" along with all the stuff I really did want.

Most enjoyable reference material: the DVD's Martin put together of radio on
film. Great to finally have some of those legendary things complete in good
quality, such as the Chevy film of WXYZ in the 30s.

Most enjoyable reference material: Fred Berney's DVD's of Vitaphone shorts
from the 20s and 30s. Finally have the 1926 Jolson "Plantation Act" film
that was perfectly restored by the Vitaphone Project from a soundtrack disc
that had been broken in seven pieces. Warner Bros had been unable to find a
soundtrack disc for it as early as 1933. Remember, this film is a full year
before "The Jazz Singer."

Most important reference material: the many DVD's of the TV coverage of the
JFK and RFK assassinations. And, of course, Jim Cox's book "Radio
Speakers." Shame on any of you who haven't bought it from Jim yet. You
NEED this book.

G'Day folks,

I am looking for two episodes of the Australian T-Men series. Which was
distributed under another label in the [removed]

It was a Donovan Joyce Production in Australia but may have a Harry S. Goodman
label if you have Transcription Discs.

The episodes I am looking for are "The Case of Double Trouble" (ep25 in
Australia but may have a different number) and "The Case of the Clutching
Hand" (ep26 in Australia).

I would prefer the episodes in wav or audio and happy to trade or buy. These
2 episodes are needed urgently for a project so you are in a position to make
a good deal if you are quick.

Subject: Another OTR Film

Recently, I acquired a videotape of a film based on an OTR show. This
one's rather obscure: David Harding, Counterspy. The film is based on
the show Counterspy, which most of the listeners thought of as the movie
title.

The film was made in 1950, but it's basically a flashback to espionage in
1943. As with the radio show, there's some complexity in the action,
though in the film we learn that David Harding is married, as he's shown
on the telephone speaking to his wife.

As with the radio show, there are layers of complexity, and the film
shows some 1950s hi-tech gadgets the Counterspies use.

It runs some 71 minutes. Until I stumbled onto it, I had no idea such a
film existed. Unlike many radio-based films, it's a feature; many were
serials.

G'Day folks, whilst transfering a pile of cassettes I picked up recently, I
listened to a one hour show called Spirit of 78's, which apparently was a
syndicated PBS show from the 1980's. The Host, Don Chichester was
interviewing Dr Horatio Q. Birdbath, (A. Purvis Pullen) about his career doing
bird and animal imitations on Radio (commencing 1929) and in movies and on
recordings. It covered his time with Disney (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty etc)
and 20 years with Spike Jones and various 78's he contributed to. One item
that may be of interest here, and I may have been the only person not to know
this, but A. Purvis Pullen was responsible for the Rinso White Bird on Amos
and Andy.

I have since found another example of Spirit of 78's and I have enjoyed
listening to them and hearing the stories behind the releases on 78rpm.
Anyone know where there are more of this show?

I just had a thought and I wonder if there are any recordings available of
radio newscasts, from the likes of Edward R. Murrow, Lowell Thomas, Gabriel
Heatter, or even HV Kaltenborn? I don't care about the content, I'd just like
to hear those voices again.

Thanx,

Ed Clute needs someone to CUE him at the convention. It should be someone
who understands something about printed music and can follow the director's
cues. The person would need to be available at rehearsals and performances.
Mary Ramlow has helped in the past but she won't be at the convention this
year. If you can, contact Ed Clute at 607-535-2010. If this is
agreeable to both of you, then contact me. Jay Hickerson
