From Those Were The Days --
1939 - Mr. District Attorney was heard for the first time on NBC. The
serial about the 'champion of the
people' was originally a 15-minute nightly program. In June of 1939, the
program went to a half-hour weekly format. Mr. District Attorney aired
until 1952.
1942 - People Are Funny was first heard this day on NBC. Art Baker was
the show's first host, Art Linkletter took over the popular program in
1943.
1949 - Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis debuted on radio in an NBC program
that ran until 1952.

I just acquired a copy of a book written by veteran radio scholar Charles
Stumpf and Ben Ohmart entitled THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE and would like to
recommend it to all GILDY fans.
The book provides much basic knowledge about the series along with details
that even long time fans will find enlightening. It has lots of cast photos
and a delightful introduction written by Shirley Mitchell, a long time cast
member.

"Ian Grieve" Posts in a message to Ryan, Re: Lois Culvers OTR Chat room.
I was looking forward to joining the chat on about the only friday I ever get
off from work, Easter Friday.
Leave it to the Aussies to be different. The Civilized world celebrates
Easter on Sunday. :)
I heated up the Hot cross Buns
Why would you have to heat buns that are already Hot?
and had a chocolate Bilby standing by and joined the chat about half an hour
early.
I'm afraid to ask what a "Bilby" is! By the way, since you folks down under
experience a plague of rabbits in some areas, It wouldn't surprise me if you
adopted a different animal to hop around and carry eggs in a basket. Hmmm. A
Roo might make a good substitute. And think of the cost savings. You
wouldn't need to buy baskets. Chocolate Roo's. now there's a good idea.
Do you ever "Barbie Bilby's" ?
> It was a great chat and several people there I already knew from other
groups. I kept my usual nic rather than use my real name. Then the moment
I had been waiting for, Jughead arrived. I had decided to try and get him
guessing as to who I was, so I gave him a bit of stick, hoping he would get
stuck into me and ask who I was. But no, he had to leave early to watch a
TV special.
Ian, if I knew it was you, I would have hung around: or at the very least,
spent a little time "pulling your chain". (English translation: "Teasing
you") The only nic I didn't recognize was "spook". Was that you?
Next time, don't fool around. I'm getting too old for "guessing games". :)
I'm really sorry I didn't know you were in the room. G'dai Mite!

"Walden Hughes" typed:
Hal ask in the last OTR digest about how the blind read books. The answer
is that I have special scanning software which is installed in my computer
that assist a normal scanner to read pages out of a book out loud.
Walden, I personally have a love -hate relationship with my computer. But
that doesn't stop me from marveling at the incredible advances that have
occurred in our society because of them. It pleases me immensely that you,
and other sightless folks, have a great deal more flexibility due to
advances in computer technology.
Speaking of Computer Technology, Walden, my only regret is that you can't
see what is being done in the field of Computer Animation and special
effects. You'll just have to take my word for it. It's mind blowing.
To you Digesters out there. Have you seen "Shreck"? What about the new
[removed]"Ice Age". (I predict the Academy Award for that one next year).
And this is not "Off Topic" in my opinion. Many well know OTR Radio
Performers made a very good living doing Cartoon Character voices. Now, they
simply use Motion Picture and TV star voices to do the same [removed]
[removed] films I mentioned *are not cartoons*. The realism, "Lighting" and
"texture" that they now can achieve defy description. All good films start
with a good story, good performances, good direction. Shreck and Ice Age are
no exception.
Walden closed by saying <SNIP>
so I am going to be one of the first person to buy Hal book,
and I hope to run you down at the SPERDVAC convention.

Subject: child actors
I discuss several child actors and their work in "Words at War," my new
book about World War II era radio drama. One of the most prominent of
them was Tommy Cook. Tommy was "discovered" by the controversial Arch
Oboler to whom his has a great loyalty to this day. The late Bill Lipton,
a lifelong friend of Arthur Anderson of "Let's Pretend" fame was another
child actor in wartime radio drama. As I mention in the book, Lipton once
played a young Nazi so well in a show that for some time afterwards, he
felt a palpable resentment among some of the show's Jewish musicians.
Scarecrow Press will publish my book (full title, "Words at War, World
War II Era Radio Drama and the Postwar Broadcasting Industry Blacklist"},
this fall. It is based on extensive archival research as well as my
interviews of Lipton, Cook, Arthur Miller, Norman Corwin, Art Carney,
Jackson Beck, Pete Seeger, Arthur Laurents and many others. Current plans
are for the publisher to market it for $[removed] However, I have
negotiated a prepublication bulk purchase so that I can personally offer
the book at the lower price of $[removed] (postage included).

Subject: The Frito Bandito
Herb Harrison recently brought up the Frito Bandito while discussing the
recent decision by Cartoon Network to ban Speedy Gonzalez.
In the late 70s & early 80s I attended an animation history course taught
by Leonard Maltin at The New School for Social Research in NYC.
Mr. Maltin once told the anecdote to the effect that the day after Frito-Lay
announced the retirement of the Frito Bandito, Variety ran the headline
"GOOD-BYE, SENOR CHIPS!"
In a June l968 issue of Life magazine (the one commemorating the life of
Robert F. Kennedy; cover picture: RFK running along a beach), there is a
full-page ad for Fritos done up as a WANTED poster with the Frito Bandito
emblazoned thereupon.
I remember the entire "Ay! Yi! Yi! Yi! I Am the Frito Bandito" jingle
(sung to the tune of "Cielito Lindo") but recalling the lyrics here will be
straying too far off the course of OTR-related topics.

Subject: Comic Weekly Man
Hi Spence and listers.
When I was growing up in Milwaukee, I could get the Comic Weekly Man on two
different stations--both on Sunday mornings. The shows were different but
they both did the same thing. By that I mean, some of the comics were the
same but from different newspapers. In Milwaukee they were from the
Milwaukee Sentinel and I don't remember the paper that they used on the
Chicago. Before I forget to tell you, the show was onWISN in Milwaukee and
WMAQ in Chicago. The announcers were different on both shows, but they both
had a little girl named Miss Honey. The format of the show must have been
syndicated. Both shows had the same theme.
Love this list.

Subject: New Archie Andrews programs - an update
While following the recent thread about the possibility of releasing new
Archie Andrews programs from the Library of Congress (LOC) and the tales
of Boston Public Library (BPL) politics, I asked a librarian friend of mine
to determine if and when the programs would be available. When they called
to request the information they were given some rather sad news. Apparently
a recent academic study will now prevent the programs from ever being
released in the future. Here are the details:
The Monday issue of the Mid-Atlantic Journal of Medicine contains a report
by Doctors Fitzwilliam and Burnbaum in which they have surveyed over 3000
one time listeners of the Archie Andrews radio program. Dr. Burnbaum
reports, "The survey was especially difficult to perform because of the
ever-shrinking pool of listeners that were alive at the time of the
original broadcasts. By systematically visiting 1437 nursing homes in
Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware we were able to
examine many former fans of this great comedy program."
Each person in the survey was given a thorough examination to determine if
listening to the program may have resulted in any specific medical side
effect. "We are able to report conclusively, for the first time, that a
common ailment was present in more than 80 percent of the survey
participants," Dr Fitzwilliam stated. "This gives overwhelming evidence
that the Archie Andrews program is the primary cause of an oral disease
commonly referred to as bad breath. Although it has many causes, it is felt
that the prolonged laughter caused the mouth to be kept in an open position
for such an extended period of time that various bacteria are able to enter
the orifice and find a suitable breeding environment," Dr. Burnbaum added.
When asked which of the characters provided the most laughter, the most
common response was: "Oh we just loved Jughead! Whenever he would tell
Archie to relax we would just howl with laughter." "This just reenforces
the results of our survey," Dr Fitzwilliam explained, "the Actor portraying
this character could not have imagined such a problem would exist in the
future."
Although further study is anticipated, depending on further grant money,
the LOC feels that these results clearly indicate the hazard of releasing
any additional episodes to the public at large. Any researchers requesting
access to the Archie collection will now require special a special medical
waver.

Sorry to break the bad news, but I thought you would all want to know.
