Subject: Ted Johnstone on WXYZ
Gordon Gregerson wrote in a few days ago to report that he believed Ted
Johnstone was voice of Sgt. Burke on the WXYZ broadcasts of The Green
Hornet. Gordon went on to add that Ted also voiced Tonto on The Lone Ranger
on some occasions when John Todd, the regular actor who played the role, was
unavailable. I don't have any additional information on Sgt. Burke, since
my Hornet recordings are at my summer home and I can't go check. But I'm
somewhat doubtful that Ted Johnstone ever voiced Tonto on the Lone Ranger.
Ted had a very distinctive voice, cultured and higher in pitch that John
Todd by quite a bit. In fact, he sounded a little like H. V. Kaltenborn,
the newscaster of that age. He was best known as The Inspector on Challenge
of the Yukon, Sgt. Preston's boss. Again, I can't refute Gordon since I
don't have the Union Pacific Lone Ranger series available here, but I can
only say that it's possible he's mistaking Ted for a different actor.

Subject: GI Jill and her not so secret identity
GI Jill was Martha Wilkerson, co-producer and wife of producer Robert M.
Warner, who played the part of Jack. The series began in San Francisco
and was called "Hi Neighbour". SSD took over production in May 1943 for
56 shows. It was revamped a few months later. It appears to have lasted
until at least Nov 1949. This according to McKenzie, and that's how he
spelled "Neighbour".
Martha attempted to answer every letter received and sent a pic out with
each response.

>From Time Magazine, Feb. 5, 1945:
With [removed] overseas, the biggest attraction on radio is a pretty, breezy
blonde with a high-school-fresh voice named Martha Wilkerson. Most [removed]
civilians never heard of her-but from Kodiak to Canberra, Martha is a top

boast of receiving one-fourth of all the fan mail inspired by the Armed
Forces Radio Service's 122 air shows.
Recording six days a week in Los Angeles, Martha Wilkerson uses the aeronym,

Subject: The Museum of Broadcast Communications
For those of you who haven't seen the news, it looks as though the Museum of Broadcast Communications got a big boost toward completion of its long-awaited new headquarters: [removed].
As an aside, "Those Were the Days" is planning to broadcast our February 4 show live from the Museum as we kick off our 34th annual Jack Benny Month. We'll be featuring Chuck Schaden's wonderful audio-documentary, "Speaking of Radio: The Jack Benny Program"; plus, we'll tune in to hear Jack on "Screen Guild Theater" and "The Eddie Cantor Show." The show can be heard live over the web at [removed]. To attend the broadcast in person, visit [removed].

Subject: The [removed]
I read with great interest Anthony Tollin's response to my initial post
on The Shadow. Anthony, it seems as if my comments may have insulted or
offended you. Please understand that was never my intention. As I have
stated in my previous post (and other posts on this forum and others) I
consider you a respected OTR historian. As a longtime OTR fan and very
amateur historian/researcher, I am only interested in getting the facts
straight. I'm sure you would agree that accuracy is the most important
thing, regardless of the source.
On the topic of relying on individual memories from years (or even decades)
ago, of course I don't believe that they should all be discounted. But to
think that every memory of any person on this planet is 100% accurate is, to
quote you, "reckless." My only contention is that, whenever possible, it is
preferable and necessary to have indisputable hard
evidence to back-up any personal recollections. As many different
clinical experiments have shown, groups of people will give identical
stories of an event they witnessed, while video evidence shows the event did
not happen the way all of them remembered it.
As to your question regarding my opinion of the Frank Readick article in
the book I won at FOTR, my answer is "I don't know." The reason is that I
only attended one dinner this past October, and never won any prizes.
Anthony, again I consider you a respected historian. If you remembered
an event from 3 months ago incorrectly, are you honestly saying that
Walter Gibson's memory (as well as Mr. Nanovic and Ms. Meisner) from a
half century ago is infallible?
I think we'll politely agree to disagree on this one. So we won't bore
the rest of our Digest friends (or get an "Administrivia" from my
favorite Listmaster), if you really feel it necessary to continue this
discussion, my e-mail address is at
the top of this post. Please feel free to contact me off-list there.

A brief clarification, concerning Dan Hughes's post from the 1/23/12 issue
of the Digest (V2012, Issue #11).
Dan referred to Neal Ellis's radio broadcasts from the Cincinnati OTR
convention. For the past couple of years, Neal's radio shows from the
convention have not been a part of the station "Yesterday USA." His shows
have
aired on the OTR and nostalgia-oriented station he founded and runs, "Radio
Once More" (_[removed]_ ([removed]) ).
Thanks.
