Subject: Lone Ranger episode cited by Joseph Ross
In a post from two days ago, A. Joseph Ross of Boston recalled a Lone Ranger
episode which may have misled his dad into thinking that the Ranger had been
given a first name. The episode in question was "A Look To The Future", and
according to Terry Salomonson's Lone Ranger Log, it aired on January 4,
1950. This is one of the best Fran Striker scripts in the long series.
Here, the masked man goes in disguise to trap the Ace Lassiter gang. Ace
was originally Ace Perigon in the script, but it was changed before air
time, probably because George Trendle thought that a baddie should not be a
"paragon" of anything. The story proceeds to a point where the Ranger, in
disguise, is taken into the gang only to be discovered as the Lone Ranger.
Ace orders him shot, and chooses another man to execute him. However, the
man turns out to be a government agent name Martin, also under cover.
Martin recognizes the masked man as a former Texas Ranger named Reid whom he
knew years earlier. The Ranger tells him he must go through with the
shooting and help capture Lassiter regardless of his (the Ranger's) own
safety. During this extended dialogue the two men approach a sheer cliff.
Before they reach it, the Ranger urges Martin to look after Dan Reid after
the masked man's death, and Martin promises to do so. Shots ring out and
the Ranger plunges over the cliff, presumably to his death. But we all know
he isn't really dead. Unfortunately for Martin, Ace discovers his treachery
and shoots Martin, thus preserving the secret of the Lone Ranger's true
identity. And Mr. Ross is correct - only the name Reid is uttered.
I enjoy Mr. Ross's occasional posts and look forward to many more.
