+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As a kid in Milwaukee, our radio set picked up as many Chicago stations as
we had locally. Early in the morning, getting ready for work and school,
our family turned on "Ton Ton Baker, the music maker, or Baker the Faker
cause (I) don't use music" on WBBM or WGN at that time. He had a
friendly bubbly, personality and evidently came out of Vaudeville. His
singing usually included very "upbeat", optimistic songs which he
accompanied himself on a piano. He was a corny, but delightful experience.
Later afternoon, perhaps at 4PM, Paul Gibson was an "educative" radio
personality, if I am allowed a rather awkward description. He came on the
air with abstruse, but fascinating information, interesting and exotic
subjects. Not a "kiddy" program, I appreciated him a good deal
nonetheless. He, too, was broadcast from one of the great Chicago radio
stations, WBBM, WLS, WGN, or others. I'd like to know his whereabouts. Of
course, after all these years he's probably "gone on" to other places,
but it would satisfy a longtime speculation on my part.

And there's Rochester's telephone greeting, which I can only paraphrase as:
"You have reached the home of Mr Jack Benny, star of stage, screen and
television, this has been a paid political announcement."
Corrections invited; I only recall the last part.
M Kinsler
I always liked Rochester best. Shoulda had his own show.

The Last Showcase 2004 Newsletter June 18, 2004
Showcase 2004: June 24-27, 2004
Seattle Center, Northwest Rooms
Seattle, Washington
Things are racheting up to a frantic pace, as we try to tie down the details
with Showcase looming on the horizon. Friends are gathering in Seattle to
help out with the effort. We had one labelling "party" last Tuesday at the
REPS Radio Readers meeting, where everyone put labels on folders and
envelopes, as well as trimmed the paper for the badges. The reward for that
was doing a cold-read of the final version of "Lost in a Radio Studio", and a
cold-read of an episode from "Famous Jury Trials"-which became even more of a
mystery when pages 18, 20, and 24 were missing from the script (copy machine
error).
The Producing Partner notebooks of scripts are being put together, with some
last minute copying of "Lost in a Radio Studio" (just written), Ethel and
Albert (just transcribed), Quiet Please and Imagination Theatre (just
written).
Tonight (Friday), a couple of us will be gathering to put labels on the
badges. Tomorrow's "stuffing" party is to get everything in the
folders-badges, dinner ticket, directions to Kaspar's and Conrad's, Showcase
CD order form, comment sheet. The printed program won't be ready until next
week-we're running a little late on that one. First Generation Radio Archives
delivered the 2 CD-set they made of the inaugural broadcast of the Mutual and
Don Lee Network, a copy destined for each full-Showcase attendee.
Saturday also has a tech rehearsal at Kaspar's, to make sure that the sound
equipment/microphones work with the camera and the PA system.
Sound effects are being gathered for the SFX taping and the recreations, as
well as recording the background sounds for playback during the convention.
Folks who volunteered (or were volunteered) are being assigned specific shows
to assist with sound or sound effects.
Jim French is putting the finishing touches on his newest Harry Nile script,
for Imagination Theatre and Showcase.
One of the exciting panels has started to take shape for early Friday
morning, 9 am. Donnie Pitchford, one of the "ossifers" of the National Lum
and Abner Society, will lead a panel of actors who have been part of NLAS'
convention: Dick Beals, Sam Edwards, Barbara Fuller, and Ginny Tyler. Plans
are afoot to call Forrest Owen, from Wade Advertising. He handled the Lum and
Abner account for five years, and hired Dick Beals to be Speedy Alka-Seltzer.
Following that, we'll hear Ray Erlenborn and Sam Edwards discuss their
activities with performing in the Army during World War II. Both men were in
special entertainment units.
Then we leap into the computer age, as Mike Wheeler shares with us the tips
and techniques of cleaning up the sound on old recordings. I just proofed his
article about it for the Printed Program-and he could even explain it to
someone like me. Fantastic. He plans to have CDs of versions of the programs
for people who are interested in it. (Another CD to burn copies of---sigh,
the work is never ending.)
We'll have interviews with our new guests-David Parker, Cliff Carpenter and
Paul Carnegie.
We'll also have a panel on Carlton Morse, lead by Martin Grams, Jr, with
Barbara Fuller, Jean Rouverol Butler, Sam Edwards and Millie Morse. They'll
start talking about I Love A Mystery and Adventures by Morse before they
disappear into One Man's Family. Usually the order is reversed, and the other
two shows get short shrift.
And there's the panel on Beyond Audio Tape, with Tom Higgins (mp3/O-Tree
fame), Charlie Summers (OTR Digest), Vince Long (mp3s) and Harlan Zinck
(First Generation Radio Archvies). It'll be electric!
Saturday morning starts off with a bang as we learn about the history of the
Mutual Broadcasting System/Don Lee Network. Martin Grams, Jr., and Harlan
Zinck will clue us in, with the hope that Elizabeth McLeod will be able to
join us by phone.
We'll have a panel on unusual recording devices which will have Vince Long
discussing paper recording tape, and possibly wire recorders, Cliff Glaspey
talking about transcription disks and players, and Bob Herman will share a
few things about four-track recorder/players.
WXYZ Wonderland will have three actors who worked on it-Dick Beals, Paul
Carnegie and Dave Parker.
We'll have Frank Buxton, Jean Rouverol Butler and others talking about
writing for radio.
And of course we'll have a couple of sessions of Just Sitting and Visiting
with the actors, one on each day. Not to mention the recreations: Green
Hornet, Adventures by Morse, Let George Do It, Quiet Please, The Shadow,
Imagination Theatre and Lost in a Radio Studio.
Saturday night banquet, at Kaspar's Restaurant, will feature Sam Edwards
singing for his dinner, while Bill Edwards (son) plays ragtime piano, along
with Esther McVey and Gil Stratton recapping an Ethel and Albert. The evening
will close with Frank Buxton, Donnie Pitchford and Dick Beals in a Lum and
Abner script called The Kettle. (Dick will play an eight-year-old girl-now,
that's acting!)
Sunday brunch will feature the audience interacting with the actors in both a
Lone Ranger and a Gang Busters recreations. And then it's off to Bellingham,
for a tour of the American Museum of Radio and Electricity and a Jack Benny
recreation.
It promises to be a smashing Showcase. Better take your vitamins beforehand,
and eat your Wheaties!
