Subject: Vale Gwen Meredith
Announced today.
"Australian playwright Gwen Meredith dies
04 October 2006
AUSTRALIAN playwright Gwen Meredith, famous for writing the long
running ABC Radio serial Blue Hills, has died aged 98.
Meredith's cousin, Jackie Treseder, told ABC Radio the writer had
been ill for some time and died peacefully at her New South Wales
Southern Highland home in Bowral recently.
"She had been unwell for a little while with her heart. Over the
last week her health has deteriorated. She's had two cousins and a
long-standing friend with her for the last week by her bedside," Ms
Treseder said.
A private funeral service was held today.
"Her wishes have been that she had a very private, peaceful, private
funeral which we had today," Ms Treseder said.
Blue Hills ran for 27 years and earned Meredith a Member of the
Order of the British Empire (MBE) on June 10, 1967 for her services
to radio entertainment.
More than a decade later, she was also honoured with an Officer of
the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to the arts.
>From Orange in country NSW, Meredith completed her secondary
education at Sydney Girls High School and her tertiary education at
the University of Sydney.
She later took a Bachelor of Arts degree.
With a love of literature, Meredith invested in her own bookstore -
Chelsea Bookshop - a source of income and her writing haven from
1932 to 1938.
In the four years following the bookshop sale, she became a
freelance writer and also married engineer Ainsworth Harrison.
In 1943, she started a 33-year relationship with the ABC, contracted
to write radio plays, serials and documentaries.
Meredith was initially best known for writing the radio serial The
Lawsons, which ran for five years and 1299 episodes until February
5, 1949.
Three weeks later Blue Hills - a family saga about country life -
was launched and lasted 5795 episodes."
Sadly, only 10 episodes survive.

Subject: YTJD --- Silent Queen Matter
I was listening to Your Truly, Johnny Dollar yesterday. Specifically, I was
listening to the last of the 5-part episodes, The Silent Queen Matter. At
the end Bob Bailey announces that they will be switching to the 1/2 hour
format and their new day will be Sunday (check local newspapers for times).
Everything that I have ever read on this digest or any other medium suggests
that the 5-part, 15 minute daily series was superior to the 1/2 hour story
lines. Why did YTJD switch back to 1/2 hour formats?

Subject: Archives of the Airwaves
The Archives of the Airwaves is a lengthy multi-book encyclopedia set
divided into sections. Think of Dunning's being two volumes thick and the
Archives being 10 volumes thick. The print is small and there is tons of
information that isn't found in Dunning's. If anyone is attending FOTR,
Ben's table will be offering the encyclopedias and you can check them out
yourself to see personally how large a mass they total.

[removed] I remember the jingle but not all of it and probably not in the right
order. It went "tarara boom de a, tarara boom de a, Philadelphia scrapple
today, tarara boom de a". The scrapple came in a can and was pretty good
sliced, rolled in flour &salt & black pepper, then fried in a little oil and
served with apple butter on top. The best scrapple, however, is still being
produced in pans about 6" x 12" and about 4" deep. It too is sliced in =
inches and fried. Parts of that jingle have remained in my head for the past
65 years. Living in the Philadelphia area (Chester County) all through the
late '30's until the late '50's, I have always been a lover of scrapple. YUM!

I believe that it was Jack Moyles who portrayed Rocky Jordan. If I'm
not mistaken, Frank Sinatra portrayed Rocky Fortune. "Rocky Jordan" was
set in Cairo, as I recall, at the Cafe Tambourine. The only Hoyle I can
recall
was a columnist who, I believe, was reported to be an expert on the game of
bridge.
As far as the "Tokyo Rose" subject is concerned, I was never aware
that
she ever received a Presidential pardon. Does anyone remember who the
President was and when the pardon was given? I think that the subject of
her role during that war might have been different based on what their
remembrance
was of her as well as what they were told by other people. Maybe some day
there will be a definitive accounting of the facts surrounding her
involvement
in a movie or documentary. As far as I know, all of the existing movies
which
have mentioned her have been fictional and included her as a background
character.
I vaguely remember Ann Sothern from some TV shows she did during
the late 50's and early 60's. I don't recall her television appearances in
the "Maisie"
series, but seem to recall another show which, I believe, was titled
"Executive
Secretary". Her character was a brassy, opinionated, blonde secretary. She
was
very good in the role. Joan Blondell (of "Miss Pinkerton" fame) was another
blonde who played such roles.
Another OTR Fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Remembrance of Larry Robinson
October 4, 2006
Dear Old Time Radio Digest readers:
At this time I would like to say a few words in
remembrance of Larry Robinson.
He was a fine radio actor it should be noted that he
was also a narrator of talking books at the American
Foundation for the Blind.
He read many types of books for several decades.
Most important to O T R fans he narrated John
Dunning's first Old Time Radio book Tune in Yesterday.
He recorded the book in 1980 when talking books were
still recorded on records. Mr. Robinson must have
enjoyed reading the book. When he read several of the
entries, he would sing the words to the theme song to
the program. When he read about Less Pretend, he sang
the Cream of Wheat song. It must have rekindled
pleasant memories for when he read the list of
pretenders he read his name.
While both of Mr. Dunning books have been recorded, I
hope talking book readers will read the first book
while they can still get records before they are fazed
out.
Mr. Robinson was a great reader for the talking book
program.
If talking book readers can still get records from
their library, the number for Tune in Yesterday is
rd14846
Many Thanks

Subject: JFK assassination coverage
October 4, 2006
Dear Old Time Radio digests readers:
Just a few comments about radio coverage of the J F K
assassination. In November 1963, the four radio
networks ran respectable news operations. Today the
networks treat radio as a step child.
When the 40 year remembrance took place in 2003, C B S
radio played the TV coverage.
I don't know if NBC radio and ABC radio played radio
coverage.
For that matter I have not seen much A B C N B C or M
B S recordings. Most of the coverage is centered on
CBS.
It should be noted that the other radio networks did a
fine job as well.
ABC radio used such reporters as Don Gardner Tom
O'Brien, Les Griffith and Charles Woods. Fred Foy
narrated a tribute to the late president on Sunday
November 24.
NBC radio used such reporters as Morgan Beatty and
Russ Ward.
How much of the coverage is available from ABC radio
NBC Radio And MBs?
Many Thanks
Jim Taylor

Subject: Ann Sothern
The discussion about "The Adventures of Maisie" reminds me of the time Ann
Sothern came to my hometown for an acting symposium at Mt. Hood Community
College in the early 1980's.
We asked Sothern about Maisie and she responded that she didn't think anybody
remembered that character, which she created so ably in the movies. I asked
her about the the radio program and she said it was more fun to do than the
films. The elements in the radio presentations were more complex and allowed
her to "act."
Ann Sothern was an amazing actress who belatedly was recognized by Hollywood
when she was nominated for an Oscar in "The Whales of August."

Subject: RE:Richard Diamond Missing husband
Hello.
In reference to the question about the Richard diamond series, all of my
Richard diamond lists have that notation, that an alternate title for
the show was "Missing husband"
The reference must be to the show of June 14, 1950 which was a show that
guest starred June Allyson who played Mrs. Richard Diamond who was
looking for her husband. It was not in the regular Diamond format, but
an inside joke capitalizing on the fact that Powell and June Allyson
were married.
The Pete Rocco case does not have a missing spouse in it as I recall.
This could be simply a typo that has been repeated from list to list.

Subject: In The Spirit of Halloween I offer a
treat--no trick
Hi all,
In the Spirit of Halloween I am offering a copy of Carlton E Morse's The City
of the Dead in MP3 format for anyone who wants it.
I know that many folks on the list have more OTR than I certainly do, but I
also know that there are some who don't have even as much as I do. <grin>
If you are in to Halloween as much as my household is then you'll probably
like this.
It's in 10 chapters.
I didn't label them by chapter title simply because I was doing it for my MP3
player and then I thought I'd offer it up to the group.
I'll list the names here, though.
These episode titles come from the Jerry Haendiges log.
I believe that the first episode was on 01-08-44.
1. The City of the Dead,
2. I've Dug up Something Ghastly,
3. The Body that Walked off,
4. Old Clawfoot again,
5. The Skeleton Walks in,
6. The Ghoul in the Grave,
7. Captain Friday Vanishes,
8. The Kidnapping of Clawfoot,
9. The Trail of the Phantom Church Bell,
10. Where the Pearls Were Hidden.
Our esteemed listmaster has offered to put them up for download at

Enjoy and happy Halloween.
