With more than 700 affiliates Mutual billed themselves as "The World
Largest Network". Many were 250-watt daytimers.

I don't buy that the networks, even the Big Two, confined themselves
to clear channel 50,000-watt stations. There weren't that many.

In Boston, CBS for many years owned WEEI 590, which was 5000 watts,
with a north-south directional pattern. NBC was on WBZ, which was
and is a Clear Channel 50,000 watt station, though in the mid-1950s
WBZ dropped its NBC affiliation and NBC had to move to another
station.

ABC was, for awhile, on WLAW, Lawrence, which was a 50,000-watt
signal on 680, but not a clear-channel station.

Mutual was on WNAC, which at the time was a 5000-watt station on
1260. In the early 1950s, WNAC bought out WLAW and moved to the WLAW
signal. NBC moved to that station when it was dropped by WBZ.

For awhile ABC was on WCOP 1150, another 5000-watt signal. Later it
was on WVDA, the former 5000-watt WNAC signal on 1260. Eventually,
in the late 1950s WVDA became WEZE and then became the NBC affiliate
for awhile. ABC ended up on WTAO 740, a 250-watt daytimer in
Cambridge.

Subject: hearing problems

Pursuant to the previous e-mails regarding the subject
regarding hearing that "matures", I find that
oftentimes in crowds, I cannot discern someone talking
to me from the noise or crowd noise and it appears to
be all one or else it appears drowned out by the
larger noise. This is common with age and affects men
sooner and more completely than women but is due to
the fact that the frquencies that contain the voices
are not as clear and cannot be separated from the
larger noise and the crowd noise basically overrides
the single voice in hat case. The audiologist will
say hearing is normal for your age group and I tested
well, but obviously I cannot hear things a 12-year-old
can
(until a few hours n the iPod). I work with digital
audio and in the processor mode with the equalizer,
the first couple of bands and the last couple do not
appear to me to alter the sound. My (former) ear,
nose, throat doctor put it this way in explaining why
I had trouble hearing a single voice in a crowd:
"it's just that men cannot multi-task". I thought
this seemed like a stupid explanation and indeed it
was.

Does anyone know if there are OTR programs starring thel late June Allyson?
Iknow she was usually cast as the wholesome, supportive wife and she
performed these roles quite well. The only movies I can remember her in were
"Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott and "The Glenn Miller Story". Surely,
there were others.

University of Missouri at Kansas City. It has "over
290,000 sound recordings in formats that include LPs,
78s, 45s, cylinders, transcription discs,
instantaneous cut discs and open-reel tapes" which
includes vintage radio programs. I haven't had time to

listed in a searchable catalog, however. Has anyone

Subject: More Married OTR Couples

If I do not seem like an expert on this subject, you are right. I am not! I
am going by very faded memories.

I was reminded of this subject when I saw Derek's reference to Shirley Booth
and Ed Gardner. The only living Miss Duffy since Sandra Gould left us, is a
delightful lady, Hazel Shermett, who went to Puerto Rico to do Duffy's
Tavern. Hazel is the widow of OTR writer Larry Rhines (spelling?).

Who can ever forget about that most prestigious of all radio couples:
Jeanette Nolan and John McIntyre?

Prior to re-marrying, the late Les Tremayne was married to soap opera queen
Alice Reinhart.

Veola Vonn's first husband was Hanley Stafford; After he passed away, Frank
Nelson married her.

Frank Nelson had been previously married to OTR actress Mary Lansing, and
they had two children.

Robert Dryden was married to an actress, and I am not sure she was OTR.
Maybe some of you easterners can remember her name, since Mr. Dryden came to
FOTR.

I am not sure if Esther Geddes ever did much radio, but she was a television
interviewer in the state of Oregon, and was married to Tyler McVey.

Has anyone mentioned Peg Lynch and Allen Bunce? (spelling).

Just recently, in my posting, honoring Amzie Strickland, I mentioned that
she was married at one time to a superb actor, Frank Behrens. He was a FDR
imitator, as well as having a running role on Lorenzo Jones.

Betty Lou Gerson, a prolific actor and animation artist, was married to Joe
Ainley (OTR director of the Chicago Theatre of the Air. I am not sure of
the name of that program.) After Mr. Ainley passed away, Miss Gerson married
OTR character actor Lou Luria. Mr. Luria was not only an actor, but he
created a phone employment service for radio actors.

Please add to this list, and correct my fading 71 year-old memory. Thanks!

It appears according to Jerry's log, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar was not
aired on October 23, 1956, but there is no missing episode.
Does any of the Johnny Dollar experts on the digest know what aired
instead?

After doing a fair amount of checking but finding nothing conclusive, I
think the following is a quite viable possibility.

Since it was getting close to the November, 1956 Elections, it is quite
possible that the JOHNNY DOLLAR time slot on October 23, 1956 was bought for
an advertisement for one of the political campaigns.

Signing off for now,

Superman has placed them in a position where they die. He is
responsible. He could be charged with murder.

Probably not. Kidnapping for sure, illegal detention, probably. But
rather than murder, possibly manslaughter.

Anent The Lone Ranger's activities,

Right-wingers love to take such figures as the
Lone Ranger and John Wayne to their hearts, but as
represented in their dramas both figures acted on the
most liberal of motives, accepting that unjust laws
may be ignored.

Discussing political philosophy is a slippery slope. The Lone Ranger was
well grounded in general law, often invoking the authority of the town's
coroner as the senior legal official if the town lawmen proved to be
crooked. From his actions and connections, he usually worked hand in
hand with local and federal lawmen, plus elected officials.

As far as the question of desertion went, he was officially killed at
Bryant's Gap.

Radio Dial Log

London Will Choke
Under the above heading, Variety, theatrical and radio bible, publishes
the following item datelined Philadelphia.
"If and when the King and Queen of England speak on the radio during their
visit to this country, WDAS has an offer for the sale of 15 minutes preceding
and 15 minutes following. "Buyer is manufacturer of 'Royal Clothes -- Fit for
a King'. He thinks it would be a natural."

Along the Airialto
Uncle Don of WOR, the juvenile Walter Winchell, celebrates his 15th
anniversary on the air next month. ... Arch Oboler,
radio script writer, discussing the problems of his craft in the current issue
of Billboard, says radio writing "has been and still is the stepchild of
literature. Compared to the ephemerality of even the best of radio plays, the
motion picture drama and the magazine story are as enduring as that 'time
capsule' buried at the New York World's Fair recently. It is the rare radio
drama which finds itself repeated. There may be satisfaction in knowing that
one's play is being absorbed by 20,000,000 twitching ears; but they are very
slight, particularly when the compensation for such efforts comes out of the
smallest part of the program budget. To pay $5,000 for a guest star and $150
for the words she emotes is obviously not a method or situation which can be
expected to build a group of eagerly working radio dramatists." ... there is
talk of Pearl Buck, recent Nobel Prize winner, heading the WHN "Refugee
Theater of the Air" which starts Dec. 2. Stations conducted auditions all of
last week and show will feature talented refugees who specialize in singing,
playing musical instruments, acting, etc.

Douglas LeDuc, citizen of Detroit, is suing city officials and not CBS

to an end" and while attempting to flee tripped over a sidewalk bump and broke
her ankle. City of Detroit has asked LeDuc to specify how much damage he
wants.
We'll let you know what happens in this great legal battle!

Notes on the Cuff
Jack Benny may come East the first of next year and do broadcasting from
Radio City ... the pretzel maker on Fred Allen's most recent program was a
real attraction. Plenty laughs during his appearance, and now, Mr. Allen, how
about interviewing a gag writer for comedians? ... Dave Rubinoff, who has a
host of friends in Brooklyn where he played so many seasons at the Fabian
Paramount, is leaving this week for a rest in Havana. He's recuperating from
a serious illness and plans to return to radio in the spring. ... Dave
Sarnoff, prexy of RCA, and chairman of the board of NBC, gets the annual Poor
Richard Club award on Jan. 17 for outstanding service to advertising. Will
Hays won it last year ... Dick Pack and Tony (Mighty Handsome) Marvin are
doing a weekly broadcast from the World's Fair Grounds. They walk around the
grounds with mobile equipment each Wednesday at 3 [removed] describing activities
of the workmen and status of the construction work.

Hope you all enjoyed the forgoing, with Patience and Fortitude.
