Although not a dramatic show, George Burns regularly broke the fourth wall
in the 1950 "Burns and Allen" show. I wonder if there is an earlier TV
show
that used this OTR technique.
That's just it, I have always been used to seeing the broken fourth wall in
comedy series (Burns & Allen, Garry Shandling) and comedy movies
(Hope-Crosby "Road" movies), and even at the ends of TV dramas (Broderick
Crawford
and Lloyd Bridges at the end of "Highway Patrol" and "Sea Hunt,"
respectively telling us to tune in again next week) but it was rare to see
someone
actually do it in the middle of an active scene on a non-comedy. It may have
happened earlier, but it's the first I ever saw of it and I have to say,
it was definitely eye-catching. Even when Rod Serling made his first
on-camera appearance on "The Twilight Zone" and interacted with actor Keenan
Wynn, it was still done for laughs.
But I remember the Ellery Queen radio show making a big deal out of the
"big reveal" of whodunnit, and I felt the TV version in the 1970s was making a
nod to that.
And I loved how George Burns did it, he pretty much wrote the book on it
for TV.
