1947 Sergeant Preston of The Yukon went national for the first time. ...
The show, with the Canadian Mountie and his trusty dog, King, continued
on the radio until 1955,
And it continued on television for several years later.
1955 ... Stations and
listeners who were "on the Monitor beacon" were entertained for six
hours or more each Saturday and Sunday night for nearly two decades.
NBC's Monitor was one of the last live network radio programs on the air.
It was on daytimes too on weekends. I often heard it in the afternoon.
According to Wikipedia, it "originally aired beginning Saturday morning
at 8am and continuing through the weekend until 12 midnight on Sunday.
However, after the first few months, the full weekend broadcast was
shortened when the midnight-to-dawn hours were dropped." Monitor
expanded to weekday evenings for awhile in 1959. The show was on only
for six hour time blocks on weekends in its final year.
Various regular NBC programs became Monitor features. This has created
confusion for some radio historians. For example, some books say that
Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" ended on radio in 1956. It didn't
but it became a feature on Monitor and continued on radio until 1959 or
1960. George Goble, Duffy's Tavern, Bob & Ray, and others did short
segments.
When Groucho's show joined Monitor, it moved from its previous Wednesday
night timeslot to Saturday afternoons. It stayed there until Monitor
expanded to weekday evenings, at which point Groucho's show moved to
Monday evenings for the rest of its radio run.
