Subject: Barbara Hutton reference
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I think that's just the point. The point he was attempting to make
(in my opinion) was that he'd made so many jokes about Jane's mother
that she wound up as rich as Barbara Hutton, or something to that effect.
As always,
Kenneth

Subject: The cost of OTR tomes
>From time to time on this forum we've discussed the prices publishers charge
for vintage radio volumes. I think most readers know that authors, unless
they are self-publishing (paying for production themselves), have no say in
the tabs legitimate publishers set. Frankly, even after all these years and
books, and knowing the bulk of many titles are destined to be purchased by
academia (universities, public and private schools, institutions, etc.), I'm
still bewildered by the tags on some tomes, including some of mine.
To wit, I recently received a new catalog from a company that has released
several worthy titles in our field (not McFarland) that -- after five
years -- is continuing to promote one of my texts at almost $80. It's easy
to think such books are traveling the academia route which, presumably, even
in strapped times has a little more wherewithal to buy them at inflated
prices (although they may qualify for deep discounts of 40% or more). But
is that putting more books within reach of the common man? In 2008, my
latest sales report from that publisher indicates a total of 7 copies of
that book left the warehouse all year, including 5 sold to institutions and
2 bought by individuals (OTR enthusiasts, historians, researchers, others).
And I collected a pre-tax "profit" of $[removed] all year. That was for a
10-month investment in research, equipment and repairs, communications,
supplies, and whatever added fees were involved (usually photography and
indexing, which didn't occur with that book) and, yes, my time. As I was
never in it for fortune and fame but for the intrinsic rewards of writing
and preservation, I feel adequately compensated.
But I use that as a case to ask if there isn't something strange about this
picture. It compares to my recent foray to the department stores to find a
pair of house slippers. At Sears, a long revered emporium where I was
taught as a boy you could buy almost "anything" and if you didn't like it
you could take it back (way before that was in vogue elsewhere), I found
just what I wanted, but I didn't want to pay the full price of $24. I had
no trouble getting in there, however; our Sears is always, but always,
empty. Then I drove a block away to Penny's, which invariably has a big
crowd (any day, any time of day). For $10, I found virtually the same shoe
with similar composition and style. I bought and am satisfied. I realized
if Sears had sold theirs for $10 I would have bought right then. Is that a
plausible reason why nobody's there?
What would happen, I thought, if a publisher had hundreds (thousands?) of
aging OTR titles in its inventory and sold them -- every day, or for an
advertised time -- at 75% off? Wouldn't the schools and the guys and gals
with a little cash (but not a lot) benefit along with the publisher? What
is it I'm missing? After all, whatever it cost to produce the books
originally is history. Now why not get them out of the warehouse and into
the hands of people who can use them and make some money doing it? There's
some logic I'm missing here; perhaps an inventory control expert can share
with us.
I realize bringing this up will possibly unleash the ire of a few who are
acquainted with a handful of reputable publishers that sell their wares for
less and may be oriented to individuals instead of to institutions. I'll
not get into the "us" vs. "them" arena; without bashing suffice it to say
there are probably some very good reasons why an author is attracted to a
certain firm. The fact is, they all have salient points, each with pluses.
I believe there is a place for them all and every one supplies us with
valuable stuff we can gain from and enjoy.
What I have said may allow anyone who thinks those of us who are writing OTR
books are living high on the hog and vacationing in Tahiti aren't quite
living life like that. Yet it's a joy to be a miniscule part of the
machinery attempting to record some of what transpired in the past for
today's and future radiophiles. Thanks for the opportunities you give to
all of us.

Subject: Basil Rathbone's 'Beyond the Green Door'
Back in the late 50's there was a radio show called 'Beyond the Green Door'
or words to that effect. The show host was non other than 'Basil Rathbone'! I
cannot find any reference to this on the Internet. Do you have any detail on
such a radio show?
Thanks,

Subject: Honorary Unsubscribe: Himan Brown
This may be a little late, but Randy Cassingham featured Mr. Brown in his
weekly "This Is True" newsletter:
THIS WEEK'S HONORARY UNSUBSCRIBE goes to Himan Brown. Once, before TV,
even radio was new. Brown got in at the infancy of radio, and produced
more than 30,000 shows for your grandparents. For the full story see [link]
[removed]
Mr. Cassingham often honors scientists, philosophers, inventors, and other
recently departed persons of note, so maybe Himan Brown would consider it an
honor to be included.
