Subject: Fibber McGee and Molly question

I received the following question, which I cannot answer.
Do any of you remember this, and do you have any info
that I can send to hi about this particular show?

*******************************************

I have a question regarding FM&M show that I can't find much info about
and the IMDB is of no help. But I do recall having seen this on
television about 30+ years ago. Yes-- television!

The show that I'm remembering was a documentary film done somewhere
around 1973 for public television which may have been titled "The Last
Fibber McGee and Molly Show", which was essentially a visual
presentation of a reunion of the surviving principal cast, who were
gathered to give a recorded performance (which I assume was broadcast
**somewhere** on radio, but then again, maybe not) of one final episode
of the series. However, I've never been able to find any information on
this film, nor have I heard a recording of the "last show" performance
itself listed on anyone's archive broadcast list.

To be honest, I'd think I'd dreamed the whole thing, if it wasn't for
the fact that I remember spcifically taking the time to watch [removed] at
that time, there was a notable resurgence in the popularity of OTR
shows, to the extent that one of our local radio stations was
programming it 5 nights a week for a year or two (KEX, in Portland,
Oregon). That's actually why I knew who Fibber and Molly were, and why
the TV program interested me.

In any event, I'm wondering if you've come across any information on
this documentary during your research. Maybe it's just nostalgic
curiosity, but I'd like to get a chance to see it again [removed]
thanks for any help that you can give!

I know later network censorship disallowed lots of words and references--was
that one of them?

The "N" word was prohibited by NBC's Continuity Acceptance division as of
May 1, 1935, as ordered in a memo from Vice President for Programs John
Royal to Continuity Acceptance director Janet McRorie. The word had been
used in both songs and dramatic programs prior to that date, but
criticism from African-American groups finally put a stop to it. Royal's
memo reveals, unfortunately, that the attitudes of the time were well
entrenched at the highest levels of the network -- Royal states to
McRorie that, direct quote, "these darkies put a lot of pressure on us,
and sometimes they are too exacting."

Interpret that one as you will.

Subject: "Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand
 with the Big Bands"

The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].

Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "One Night Stand." We present new
shows every week or so. The current three programs will be
available on line at least until the morning of Monday, March 27.

Program 28 - July, 1972 - Alexander Scourby

The precise, mellifluous voice of Alexander Scourby, trained
in Shakespearean roles in the 1930's and perfected in radio
dramatic parts in the 1940's, was a well-known sound on
Broadway, in motion pictures, and on television. His most
appreciative audience, however, is found among the nearly
80,000 borrowers of Talking Books, the recordings of literature
produced under the supervision of the Division for the Blind of
the Library of Congress for the use of the legally blind.

We interviewed Mr. Scourby at his farmhouse in Connecticut.
He died in 1985.

Program 29 - August, 1972 - Mary Jane Higby and Guy Sorrell

Mary Jane Higby, Network Radio Soap Actress, star of "When
a Girl Marries" and author of "Tune in Tomorrow," makes a
return visit to "The Golden Age of Radio," this time with her
husband, actor Guy Sorrell.

One of the earliest shows on which Ms. Higby appeared was
"The Lincoln Highway Radio Show," which ran for a little over
two years and was sponsored by Hecker Products Corporation,
makers of Shinola Shoe polish. The show premiered March 16,
1940 on WEAF, the NBC Red Network Flagship Station in New
York and was carried "Coast to Coast" on over 48 stations.

"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands" With Arnold Dean

Vocalist Helen O'Connell - October 1971

This week's subject is Big Band Vocalist Helen O'Connell.
Born and raised in northwest Ohio, Helen O'Connell began
her professional career touring with Jimmy Richards' nine-
piece orchestra before eventually landing a steady job on
local radio in St. Louis. She later left her radio job to sing
with Larry Funk and his Band of a Thousand Melodies. Her
big break came during a stay in New York in 1939 when
Jimmy Dorsey heard her sing.

Though O'Connell had limited vocal range she became
popular with the public and went on to record several big
hits with Dorsey, including ''Green Eyes'' and ''All of Me.'
Most famous are her duets with Bob Eberly, in whom she
also had romantic interest. She was voted best female
vocalist in a 1940 Metronome poll.

In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."

Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.

I believe Parker Fennelly had the recurring role of a local sheriff
on "The Adventures of the Thin Man" in the 1940's. I believe his character
first name was Ebenezer. I could be wrong.

The eps I have of him performing on this program was entitled, "Nora's
Night Of Mystery".
