J. Fred MacDonald and Alfred Balk, writers about radio's history. were on
WGN's Milt Rosenberg show Friday night. I was a bit disappointed in their
presentation and I note that their work is seldom mentioned here. I'm
curious about how their work is regarded by this group.

Dear Tony-
Thanks for the details.
I of course love Jack Beck - of sainted memory! - and his work (in the
Golden Age, I think that he, Orson, and Fred Foy were the masters of making
the
Exposition a character in it's own right), and knew of his predecessors.
Had not known that sturdy character man Ross Martin had done the last 30
min. shows.
Thanks,

Dear Stephen-
If memory serves, the cause of death was a compound: he had already been
suffering from abdomenal pain - likely, encroaching appendicitis - and the
punch
made it acute.
I believe he did live for a few days, however?

Good friend, Ray Scott, was one of the finest sports announcers we ever
had. Ray told me his broadcast idol was Lowell Thomas. If you have ever
heard Ray's play-by-play, and remember the Thomas 'rhythm' you'll notice
the similarity immediately.

That is so sad. I was able to journey to New Jersey for the OTR conference
several years ago, where he and Jan Merlin were guests. I'll echo what
Walden wrote: he was, indeed, a very nice man.

Subject: Color radio?
I agree 100%. I have never listened to radio with my eyes. Color and black
and white do not compute. The sounds are what matters, the vocal delivery
of the actors, the music, the sfx -- that's what matters to me.
And it helps to have a plot that hangs together, or jokes that are still
funny after 60 years!

Hi folks, I was wondering if anyone out there in radioland had a decent
picture of Jack Kirkwood that they could send me for use on my web page
for my show The Glowing Dial. I need this photo as soon as possible as
this particular episode premieres Sunday May 21. We're doing a show
featuring famous "Jacks". Thanks in advance! And sorry I don't post
more often but all you folks are just so knowledgeable on old radio it's
a joy to read your posts. I feel like I have no info to offer most of
the time. See you on the radio!

Subject: You can be sure if it's a Westinghouse
Jim Erskine commented:
I'm trying to find out the current ownership status of "Adventures in
Research", the program syndicated by Westinghouse Research Labs in the
40s. I know Charlie doesn't care for much "c" word talk on this list
(and I don't blame you Charlie), but I'm wondering if anyone might be
aware of the specifics on this particular show and would contact me
offlist. I'd sure appreciate the help tracking this down one way or t'other.
I can't e-mail you direct, Jim, having problems with my computer so I'll
post instead. The series was produced beginning in 1941 and Westinghouse
itself owned the rights to the series. The copyrights were owned by the
script writers (whoever they may be) and if any of them are still presently
copyrighted, it would be under the individual script writers, not the
Westinghouse Company ([removed] Elettra Technology). One thing you might want to
make sure is to clear permissions for using the Westinghouse name. It's
still trademarked. Copyrights are one thing, trademarks can be another.

Subject: Lorre's SUSPENSE TV Show
Evan Torch, MD commented:
In his new book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One, Stephen Youngkin has provided
. . .
In the book, Youngkin mentions that Roma Wines, as part of a promotion
campaign, filmed Lorre in an August 1945 live broadcast. Does anyone in the
Pacific Pioneers Org. have a copy of this?
A copy of the film still exists. it was broadcast "live" but preserved on
kinescope format. In fact, if I am not mistaken, it was so experimental
that they shot it in color. It was a one-time thing. The film, however, is
still housed in a library and not available in circulation on VHS or DVD.

I've been on the road and am just now catching up on the OTR Digest. In
light of a couple of posts that followed mine, I'd like to clairfy a comment
about Himan Brown. I didn't mean to imply he took "ownership" of a program
that wasn't his.
In condensing my story, I left out the sequence of things, which was: I
asked Mr. Brown to sign my Radiola album which featured Grand Central
Station. He took a look at the broadcast date and said it was after his
association with the show (HE poined that out to me ... it wasn't anything I
discovered later) and was reluctant to autograph it. Then Mr. Brown went on
for a minute or so about people and companies selling tapes and records of
OTR without reimbursing the orginal talents. I joked, "You could sign it,
'Stolen from Himan Brown,' which is what he did.
Now, I don't think that changes my original intent, which was to suggest
that he would bristle at the eBay auction disclaimer for copies of CBSRMT
"believed to be in the public domain" ... but in case anyone construed it as
indicating he was dishonest in claiming a show as his own when it wasn't,
that was not what he did.

I was at an estate sale recently, picked up a glass based 10" 78 rpm record
with the same thing on both sides, so I know it was a dub, but from what I
do not know. It is broken but I was able to make a quick transfer. The
outside of the cardboard package was labeled "Nib's Citation". The label
says "Harrison's Murmansk Citation" & "Re-recorded from the Navy Day Program
of October 27, '42". The label is "A Victor Damon Recording", "Damon
Transcription Laboratory" and the address is in Kansas City, MO.
I'm just wondering what Navy Day was, what else was broadcast that day and
who broadcast it, and how a record made in Kansas City turns up in Houston
Texas. Nib must have been someone's father or grandfather. Victor Damon was
apparently a recording service.
