Did not Richard Nixon have longer, "policy" speeches for radio only,
into the 70's? I seem to remember as a youth that Nixon would have a
45 minute to perhaps more than an hour at a time to elucidate further
on what might be too mundane for television.
I remember Nixon using radio this way, but only during the 1968
election campaign. He gave radio addresses in lieu of issuing
campaign position papers. He felt that radio better lent itself to
that purpose, and his speeches got more coverage than the traditional
position papers did. I don't remember actually hearing any of the
addresses, but I remember reading of them in the newspapers.
Nixon had a problem in that he felt the press wasn't carrying his
message, and he was looking for innovative ways to get his message
out. This was one way which apparently achieved the desired result.

Joe Postove's memory doesn't go back far enough, or maybe he's to young.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt made very good and effective of radio
with his "Fire Side Chats" in the 1930's and 1940's . I have part of
His Fire Side Chat of 12/9/41 a few day days after the start of WWII
and another form June 1944 FDR tells about the D-Day invasion and ask
people to pray with him, for our troops.
FDR became president in 1932 during the depression and he used radio to
keep the public informed of the conditions of the economy. Radio was
still in its infancy and he took full advantage to communicate with
the nation. FDR had a wonderful radio voice and was an excellent
speaker. My father told me he felt that FDR was talking just to [removed] I
don't think his fire Side Chats had a schedule.

Is the show you're referring to really "The Yoxley Case" starring John Gielgud
and Ralph Richardson? It's an adaptation of golden pince-nez from the original
canon.

In issue #22, Mr. Kenneth Clarke asked for info about an episode from the
series, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", called, "The Yastley Case",
which -- he thinks -- was originally broadcast under a different name.
In actuality, this was entitled, "The Yoxley Case". It's a version of
"The Golden Pince-Nez", which was referred to in the script by Inspector
Hopkins as "The Yoxley Case" in the opening dialogue of the original
Doyle writing.
The original Gielgud-Richardson series of 12 Holmes stories was broadcast
on the BBC Light Programme from 05 OCT 54 through 21 DEC 54. The series,
was then in the USA with 4 more episodes added. Also, 6 of the episodes
were repeated, for a total of 22 broadcasts all told. US broadcasting
began on 02 JAN 55, and ran through 05 JUN 55. Of the 10 added episodes,
the last 6.
"The Yoxley Case" was one of those added to the American series, and it
was broadcast on 03 APR 55. A lot of information on this subject is
available at [removed].
I own recordings of 14 of the 16 distinct episodes, and Mr. Clarke is
welcome to contact me off-line to talk about copies of any of them, if
he'd like. I hope that this will be of help to him. Sherlock Holmes on
radio is a special interest of mine, and I'm often doing multi-media
presentations on the subject at Sherlock Holmes clubs to which I belong.
Best regards,
Jim Arva

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about "The Adventures
of Sherlock Holmes"?<
Many, here and elsewhere!
I've been trying to find episode
dates for a case that was sent to me named "The Yastley Case".<
Well, the title's a bit off; but it was used for an early lp release of one
of the '50's Gielgud/Richardson shows:

It may have been so called in an effort to hide the fact that it was a
bootleg? Because the original series is based on actual Doyle-titled stories.

I believe you are asking about "The Yoxley Case", one of the Sir John
Gielgud radio shows broadcast in the US, but, apparently not in the UK.
One Internet page has this information:
Apr 03, 1955 "The Adventure of the Golden Prince-Nez"
Aka: The Yoxley Case, Yoxley Old Place
[removed]
I have just listened to my tape of this program and there are no
station announcements or any indication as to when or where the
broadcast occurred.
"The Adventure of the Golden Prince-Nez" is the original Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle story title. Also the story is from the series known as
The "Return of Sherlock Holmes" first published in the Strand
Magazine 1903-04, not "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" series
published a decade earlier.

An article in "Radio Recall" Feb. 2008 by Cort Vitty reminded me that I
am still looking for copies of the audition recordings used by Phil
Spitalny for his All Girl Orchestra. I understand that they do exist
but have not been able to locate a copy.
Several years ago a dealer told me that he knew who had them and he
would try to get me a copy but that never happened.
I have ten or fifteen transcription discs of the show, many autographed
photos and other items used in promoting the show. It was a show I
particularly enjoyed as a kid and I have been collecting items
mentioning the show for several years.
Can anyone on the Digest help in locating a copy?
Please contact me off line if you wish. Thank you.
Dick
