Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

The report on Red Foley, Red Skelton, Peter Grant [removed] at WLW reminded me of
my visit last year to Cincinnati.
I located the mausoleum where the ashes of WLW legend Ruth Lyons are interred
and decided to drive there and pay my respects. After doing so I was told by a
mausoleum employee that just a few feet away was a niche containing the ashes
of Peter Grant!
Peter also was an announcer on Ruth's program; now they're appropriately

Subject: New OTR book
David and I are pleased to announce that our new book, "Radio and the
Jews," is now available. All pre-ordered copies will be mailed this week.
Chris Sterling, editor of "The Encyclopedia of Radio," had an early
peak at the book and has called it: "Delightful reading, shrewd
insights and important references."
Radio and the Jews: The Untold Story of How Radio Influenced
America's Image of Jews
By David S. Siegel and Susan Siegel
The 283 page book examines more than 100 programs that featured
Jewish themes and/or characters. While several books have been
written about Jewish performers on radio, such as Jack Benny, Eddie
Cantor and George Burns, Radio and the Jews is the first in-depth
look at the Jewish image on radio across all program genres, from
comedy and drama to soap opera, religious oriented programs and World
War II era programs.
The book includes:
** Jewish themed series, from the familiar Goldbergs to several long
forgotten programs such as Meyer the Buyer, Krausemeyer and Cohen and
Potash and Perlmutter.
** Specific episodes of mainstream programs with Jewish themes such
as The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour, The Lux Radio Theatre, Columbia
Workshop and Mr. District Attorney.
** Special broadcasts such as Behold the Jew and Operation Nightmare
as well as short-wave broadcasts from Europe during World War II.
** New information regarding the popular program Abie's Irish Rose
and why its writers experienced the same conflict that Gosden and
Correll faced when Amos 'n' Andy came under attack from segments of
the African-American community.
** The first detailed account of the longest running Jewish themed
program, the Message of Israel, which aired from 1934 to 1986.
** The darker side of radio and how the airwaves were used to spread
anti-Semitic messages
What follows is an annotated Table of Contents
1. In the Beginning (David Sarnoff and William S. Paley.)
2. "Yoo, Hoo, Is Anybody?" (The Goldbergs.)
3. "Those People" (Father Coughlin, Charles Lindbergh, Gerald L. K.
Smith, Henry Ford.)
4. Americans All, Immigrants All (The series that celebrated the
contributions of various ethnic groups to American society, including
a special episode on the Jews.)
5. Forgotten Series (see above for some examples)
6. Funny, You Don't Sound Jewish (Yiddish dialect characters,
including Mrs. Nussbaum, Mr. Kitzel, Shlepperman, Papa David, Izzy
Finkelstein and others.)
7. Abie's Irish Rose
8. Judaism Aired: Religious Oriented Programs (The Message of Israel,
The Eternal Light and other programs.)
9. Jews in the Mainstream
Part I: The Gathering Storm, 1930-1938 (Lux Radio
Theatre, Fleishmann's Yeast Hour, etc.)
Part II: The War Years, 1939-1945 (Orson Welles Theater,
Theatre Guild on the Air, Words at War, etc.)
Part III: The Postwar Years: 1946-1959 (Superman,
Suspense, Treasury Agent, Studio One, etc )
Part IV: Biographies of Prominent Jews (Cavalcade of
America, Hallmark Hall of Fame, etc.)
Appendix I. Availability of Programs (Scripts and audio recordings.)
Appendix II. Abie's Irish Rose Controversy (A side-by-side comparison
of objections and actual text.)

Hey digesters - if any of you work in radio or media and have the opportunity
to mention the upcoming Friends of Old Time Radio Convention as part of your
job - or have access to someone who might be interested - please let me know
so I can get him or her whatever background he or she [removed], if you have

personality who is attending the show, I can help arrange [removed] hope
webmasters on the list have already linked to Charlie's [removed] or to our
Wikipedia entry ([removed]) so their
audiences can find information about the convention - but here's a reminder
just in [removed] has already been great buzz on the digest about the October
18-21, 2007 event at the Holiday Inn North in Newark, [removed], so I won't belabor
the point that we're fast approaching the time at which OTR conventions will
lose steam and your best time to meet great radio actors and hear their
stories is NOW. George Lefferts of X-1 is scheduled to make his first
appearances in more than a decade. Peter Fernandez will direct an episode of
Suspense. Regulars like Arthur Anderson, Bob Hastings and Rosemary Rice will
be on hand. Molly Bee is appearing and so [removed] you need any information,

Subject: Guy Lombardo
Neal Ellis' comment about The Guy Lombardo Band yesterday reminded me of
how a buddy of mine and I , after lunch at PJ Clarke's, stumbled into the
Waldorf Astoria ballroom one afternoon in 1976 during the new year's holiday
season (while our wives were shopping) and heard the GL band practice. We
will never forget that day and talk of it often as we do meeting John Lennon
and Yoko Ono at the Algonquin. These equal the old days of dancing to the
Glenn Miller Band at Moonlight Gardens in Cincinnati in the 50's and Duke
Ellington and his band at Castle Farm about 1961. I cherish those great
times and always remember "nostalgia isn't what it used to be", but may even
be better.

There was a rock version some 25 years ago. I have it on two cassettes.
It was at least an hour if not more in length. There is a narration done
by richard burton woven throughout. I found the music quite compelling,
more in the style of pink floyd productions, if yyou are familar with that
group.
That was the 2-LP record release from England and Richard Burton narrates
(thankfully he didn't sing) and it came out on CD since. it isn't a rock
version, but it's really, really entertaining.

Subject: Need a date for Blondie
That subject is misleading I'm sure Blondie never was never with out a
date. What I would like, if possible, is a date an episode of Blondie
from the war years.
A WWII fighter pilot who went to high School with Blondie and is hero
who shot down 27 Japanese war planes. The hero has named his P51
Blondie, and coming back home Dagwood feels the hero is a rival.
This episode is an AFRS rebroadcast that is 28 minutes long. My guess
that the episode was broadcast in 1944 or 1945
Any help from OTRLAND would be appreciated.

Subject: Bloopers
Melanie Aultman wrote --

I notice a lot of bloopers or ad libs in comedy shows and they almost
always stop the show while the audience laughs, someone comments on it
(another cast member or the person who flubbed the line) and the show
continues on after a few seconds. I always enjoy these. (Thanks to
modern technology I can back up and listen again if it was something
that got past me.)
However, on dramatic shows when a blooper is made the show continues
on as if nothing had happened. (In my minds eye I see the cast trying
to contain their laughter, maybe looking away from the "offender" or
pinching themselves).
I often wonder how close I am in this regard.
