Subject: In Defence of Radio Spirits
A few days ago a query was posted asking what has happened to the weekend
shows on the Radio Spirits website "Radio Movie Classics" (Lux), "Radio
Superheroes" and "Radio Theatre" (KRLD). When I found that they were not
posted on the
website in the usual way on Saturday 5 July, I sent an email enquiring the
position and the (as always very prompt) reply stated these series had ceased,
for financial reasons it seems, but that the daily shows under the title "When
Radio Was with Stan Freberg" would continue.
In a posting by Kurt in Digest #279 it was stated that the Radio Spirits
"station listings for the various shows were actually years behind the
times". I
do not understand this as it is just not correct as the listings are always up
to date and all episode titles and original broadcast dates (where known) are
given.
I have found the Radio Spirits and the associated KNX Drama Hour sites to be
among the best on the web for OTR. I have no connection with Radio Spirits or
KNX but just enjoy listening to their shows here in England.
John.

In reference to Joseph's request for the best recording of WOTW, I just
bought a copy of the show from Ed Carr, a dealer and contributor to this
list, and was extremely surprised at the excellent fidelity. I have 4
other copies (from records, tapes, etc.) and no other version comes
close; plus it's 59+ minutes so there's nothing cut out. Ed's e-mail

Subject: Partially Transcribed
Bill Schell wondered about the term "partially transcribed". In the
spring of 1951 I transferred back to CBS New York from the Hollywood
studios. Being the start of the summer (vacation) season, I filled in for
vacationing engineers who were assigned to weekday daytime programs such
as soap operas, Irene Beasley's Grand Slam, and so forth. Come fall and I
was informed that the good life was over and I would be doing major
nightime shows, which meant a big increase in my income as there was much
overtime and "fees" from the sponsors. One of my programs was the noted
Phillip Morris Playhouse. Charlie Martin was the director. Elliot
Lawrence conducted the CBS staff orchestra. The second season, due to the
musicians being needed on the Sunday night "Ed Sullivan Show" due to the
expansion of that orchestra, the Playhouse went to recorded music cues,
consequently it was partially transcribed. With the advent of television
the requirement of credits for recorded material seemed to have gone down
the drain as most TV programming is pre-recorded, with the exception of
sports and the studio portion of news. "Times have changed".

births/deaths column. A small [removed] Rubin played many parts on the
Jack Benny
Program, but the tout ("Hey [removed]") was played by Sheldon Leonard. Rubin
was often used as supporting cast, but had few running gags in the style of
Sheldon Leonard, Mel Blanc, Frank Nelson, or Sam Hearn. For example, he
played an
Italian barber on Jack's TV show where the gang team with Darla Hood and do
an Our Gang-style comedy.
One running gag that you may recall for Rubin is where Jack asks a man behind
a counter a question, and gets the answer "I dunno." Jack continues to ask
questions, and gets an increasingly frustrated "I DUNNO!" The kicker would be
something like,
Jack: Well, if you don't know anything, then why are you standing behind the

In connection with my research for my new book, "Private Eyelashes: Radio's
Lady
Detectives", I have been corresponding with the son of writer Louis Vittes (
1911-1969). Nearly all of his father's archival materials, including his radio
scripts, were destroyed in a flood many months ago. The son, Elliot Vittes, a
college professor in Florida, is attempting to locate audio copies and/or
scripts
from all the series his father worked on.
Mr. Vittes was the writer for: Nero Wolfe, Affairs of Peter Salem, Mystery
of the
Week, Two on a Clue, The Saint, and The Lone Wolf. He was on the writing teams
for: Adventures of the Thin Man, Barry Craig, and Mr. and Mrs. North. So far
his
son has found ten audio episodes of The Saint and I have provided him with
two of
the three existing episodes of Two on a Clue.
Professor Vittes is determined to build as complete an archive as he can of his
father's radio works. He would like to be contacted by email

by anyone who has copies of the materials he seeks. He expects to pay any
reasonable costs in this project.

There is a group of folks called the Great Jack Benny Project that had taken
that task upon themselves, and done it fairly well. I am told that they have
another round of releases in the works. We also had an IJBFC project a while
back for encoding and professionally restoring some of the shows that we did
not yet have in MP3 in our library. At times, I have made the call between
two
show encodes, determining which one we wanted to use for the library. I feel
confident in saying that the IJBFC library has most of the best encodes

This Toronto Globe and Mail article on the tourism rennasaince of Palm

that was true or just a great gag from the radio show but the article
follows in any case.
It was a favorite haunt of Jack's, and he owned a home there (let me know if
you want me to post a photo of it). I also had the pleasure of interviewing
Phil Harris in Palm Desert at his office, which is a home that belonged to
Bill
Morrow, one of Jack's writers in the 30s. I have been told, although I'd
have to dig around to find where, that sometimes those shows done from Palm
Springs happened because Jack or Mary wanted to go there mid-season to get
some
relaxation.
For anyone who didn't "get" the topic of Sean's (and my) posting, there was a
bit where Jack and Roch are going to Palm Springs but not taking Polly. So
they start spelling the name, P-A-L-M S-P-R-I-N-G-S. Then at some point in
the
bit, Rochester makes a comment connecting the spelling with a vacuum cleaner
(another subversion for Polly). Eventually they turn on the radio to amuse
Polly, and she hears an ad for Palm Springs, P-A-L-M S-P-R-I-N-G-S, Palm
Springs. This makes the connection for her and the jig is up (imagine Mel
Blanc as
Polly throwing a major fit).
