Subject: This week in radio history 21-27 August
Due to connection and mail problems, last weeks edition was lost to
the ether. I am sure many were weeping, wailing and gnashing their
teeth over this loss. Others are probably asking "there's a history
column?" However, I'm re-sending it in this week column.
From Those Were The Days
8/14
1933 WLW in Cincinnati, OH premiered Ma Perkins. Just four months
later, Ma moved to WMAQ in Chicago and was heard over the entire NBC
network. Virginia Payne was 23 years old when she started in the title
role. Ma Perkins operated a lumberyard in Rushville Center. Her children
were Evey, Fay and John (who was killed in the war). One of the other
characters in the show was Shuffle Shober. Virginia Payne played Ma
Perkins for 27 years and 7,065 episodes.
1942 Garry Moore hosted a new program on NBC. The Show Without a Name
was an effort to crack the morning show dominance of Arthur Godfrey
(CBS) and Don McNeil's Breakfast Club (ABC). A prize of $500 was offered
to name the show and Someone came up with the title, Everything Goes.
1945 CBS began the series, Columbia Presents Corwin. Orson Welles did
a special reading about the fall of Japan, titled, Fourteen August.
8/15
1911 Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH introduced Crisco
hydrogenated shortening. (Where would all those shows have been with
Crisco as a sponsor? And remember, its digestible! ed)
8/16
1922 WEAF began broadcasting from new studios atop the Western
Electric Building in New York City.
1939 Lights Out, radio's "ultimate horror show," was heard for the
last time on NBC. In 1942, Arch Obler brought the show back to life on
CBS. The show's most familiar trademark, guaranteed to put you under the
covers on a dark night was, "Lights out, everybody!", followed by 12
chimes of a clock.
8/19
In 1929, Amos and Andy, starring Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll,
made its network debut on NBC.
8/22
1947 After many years as a 15 minute daily serial, Jack Armstrong, the
All American Boy, was heard for the first time as a 30 minute feature on
ABC. Remember, if you want to grow up to be big and strong like Jack
Armstrong, keep these three rules in mind: Get plenty of sleep, fresh
air and exercise. Make a friend of soap and water, because dirt breeds
germs and germs can make people sickly and weak. And for sound
nourishment and keen flavor, eat a big bowlful of Wheaties, the
Breakfast of Champions, with plenty of milk or cream and some type of fruit.
8/23
1950 - The summer replacement radio show for "Suspense", titled
"Somebody Knows", was heard for the final time on radio. The program
offered a reward of $5,000 ($44,075 in 2009 dollars) for information
that led to the solving of crimes. "Somebody Knows" began with the
introduction, "You out there. You, who think you have committed the
perfect crime -- that there are no clues, no witnesses -- listen.
Somebody knows."

1949 NBC debuted Father Knows Best. The Thursday night program aired
for five years. Robert Young played the role of Jim Anderson, the ever
patient father. The rest of the family included wife Margaret, son Bud
and lovely daughters Betty (the eldest) and Kathy. The family lived on
Maple Street in Springfield.
1939 Arch Oboler's Plays presented the NBC Symphony, for the first
time, as the musical backdrop for the drama, This Lonely Heart.

Some of you are going to love the last [removed]
A number of people already pre-ordered their SCIENCE FICTION THEATRE book but
for those who have not yet done so, they are supposedly arriving from the
printers in about three weeks. For those who are not aware of it, SCIENCE
FICTION THEATRE was a television anthology from 1955 to 1957, hosted by radio
news commentator (and radio announcer for SUSPENSE Roma Wines broadcasts,
GEORGE BURNS AND GRACIE ALLEN, and JACK ARMSTRONG). There is a chapter in the
book focusing on the career and life of Truman Bradley, written by my good
friend Jim Cox. Another chapter in the book focuses on Frederic Ziv, who was
among the pioneers of syndication for radio broadcasts during the 1930s, 40s
and 50s (responsible for THE CISCO KID, FAVORITE STORY, BOLD VENTURE, BOSTON
BLACKIE, etc.), written by Patrick Lucanio, editor of SPERDVAC's "Radiogram."
Other radio connections are included in the book.
Anyway, now that the book is at the printers, and turned out larger than
anticipated, the retail price went up. When the number of pages grow, so does
the printing cost, thus the retail price as well. If you already pre-paid for
your book, have no fear, it's paid for in full and in the mail in a few
weeks. If you have not pre-paid for your copy, you can still save postage.
Check out my web-site for details and ordering information (and you can get
your copy autographed if you order through my web-site). [removed]
The book will be available at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention for those
planning on attending next month. A sample from the book will be posted on my
blog, [removed], this Friday (August 26). (If you have not
checked out my blog lately, you might want to do so. My recent posting offers
an episode guide for the "lost" 1951 radio broadcasts of THE BIG SHOW, and it
is detailed!

Subject: Captain Midnight Premiums Reconstruction - Plus
Radio Scripts
The premiums issued by Ovaltine's Captain Midnight radio program led
me to engineer what I consider more "authentic" original
reconstructions, from which the radio-show premiums would have been
developed and had thus been described as "souvenirs."
For example, a reconstruction of the 1942 Pocket Locator was not done
from a premium, because the radio program's producers (and the [removed]
Government, for that matter) considered it simply an unfeasible
'science-fiction' idea for the 1940s. But we've since proven it
could be engineered and built with 1940s technology, and Tooru
Kawabata and I did so, as described on this League of Heroes
thread:

Then there are a couple rings: The Captain Midnight 1946 Aztec
Sun-God Ring, and the 1948 "Initial Stamping" Ring inspired by the
"Signet Ring" of the Queen of Sheba. Photos of the radio premium
rings and my current reconstructions are shown on this
Website: [removed]
Moreover, 582 scripts of the original Ovaltine-sponsored Captain
Midnight radio program were discovered in 2010. This equals about 31
percent of the 1,851 total programs sponsored by Ovaltine, in the
1940s. The discovery is described on this Website, which requires
joining the Radio Premium Exchange Forum to access:

As reported in the August issue of RADIO RECALL, the "Gunsmoke"
series of radio and TV has not been forgotten in present-day Dodge
City, Kansas. The convention bureau of that western cow town now has
as its motto: "Get the heck INTO Dodge." True West Magazine recently
named Dodge City as a Top Ten True Western Town. Here you can see
Boot Hill, the Dodge House Hotel, and the Gunfighter's Wax Museum.
The Boot Hill Museum has the largest gun collection in the west and
visitors there are entertained by Miss Kitty and her dancing girls.
