Subject: Radio lineup
In the back of the various editions of "The Complete Directory to Prime Time
Network TV Shows" there are grids showing the lineup on the various networks
for each season. I've found this particularly helpful at times. For
example, people sometimes attribute Jack Benny's departure from television to
be due to being up against Bonanza. However, a quick check on the grid
revealed he was opposite Bonanza in the 1961-62 season, but Jack didn't leave
the air until 1965. Neener neener neener.
Has anyone done a similar grid for radio? I've got a book entitled "A
Thirty-Year History of Radio Programs: 1926-1956" that's got most of the
listings, networks, times, etc. Seems like it would be a relatively easy and
handy thing to do. Perhaps a bit dicey when it comes to the time differences
(Jack was on at 4:00 *and* 7:00 Pacific Time at [removed]), and need a little
cross-referencing with Radio Digest and other resources. But eminently
do-able.
[removed] this grid exist for radio? Or have I over-simplified it?

Subject: Old magazines that covered radio
I know there were magazines published that specifically covered radio,
and later radio/TV personalities and schedules. I seem to recall one was
named "Radio/TV Mirror." I'm sure there were others. I am wondering if
somebody can give me a list of magazines like this for the period of
roughly 1940 to 1960. I would be interested in tracking some of these
down. Thanks! Larry Jordan

Subject: MP3 at Penny's
I found the Digitech MP3/CD player online at JC Penny's with QA680-0366B as
the catalog number. It's $[removed] ($10) more than the outlet price. I sent
the link to Stephen and he confirmed it's the same player he likes so much.
And it comes in colors! I called the order line to check on the [removed]
catalog number and it's no longer available. According to the operator,
"There's lots of them" still available either on-line or by phone order.
Here's the link to the page (hope it comes through the text formatting
here):

You know the drill, if you were born on the 6th of April you share your

'Fraid not - Reeves, whose birth name was George Keefer Brewer, was born in
Woolstock Iowa on January 5, 1914. His parents divorced when George was a
babe in arms, after which mother and son went to Ashland to live with
relatives. George did spend some of his childhood there, until - I'm not
sure which came first - his mother married Frank Bessolo and they moved to
Pasadena CA.
Reeves told casting agents for Selznick Studios that he was born in Ashland,
to improve his chances of being cast in "Gone With the Wind." Not the first
time an actor ever lied to get the job.

Subject: ARTHUR MILLER, MELVYN DOUGLAS, NORMAN CORWIN
(part II)--where are their papers?
>From time to time, I'm identifying the locations of the papers of various
OTR writers and actors:
For starters: Within the last six months Arthur Miller decided to sell
(most likely--although they may have been donated-- I'm not sure) his
papers to the University of Texas in Austin. A bookstore owner in New
York City has been helping Miller to organizethem prior to their shipment
to Texas. Miller started his career writing for radio, for the
Cavalcade of America and other shows including the wartime series, "The
Doctor Fights." His friend Norman Rosten, the late poet laureate of
Brooklyn who preceded Miller working for The Cavalcade, put in a good
word for him and paved Miller's way. Poet laureate of Brooklyn? Yes
indeed. Youse guys should all appreciate poetry.
Melvyn Douglas' are at Boston University. among other shows, Douglas can
be heard on one of the segments of the short World War II series "Dear
Adolf" series produced on NBC.
In a previous installment of "Where are their papers?" I mentioned that
Norman Corwin's papers are in California. They are. But he also donated
some of them to Boston University's Special Collections Library.

I wrote:
So, that's where I stand at the moment - the trail's gone cold.
In reviewing this post, I realized I left out one bit of information
that, in retrospect, is *extremely* intriguing:
As of 1939, Maurice S. Wetzel was the Chicago manager of the National
Broadcasting Company's Electrical Transcription Division (later known as
the Radio-Recording Division.)
This certainly suggests that Wetzel maintained his strong interest in
broadcast recordings thru the 1930s, and that in fact such recordings
became the focus of his career. Whether he continued to record on his own
as a hobby is something we have no way of knowing at this point, but it
does raise further interesting possibilities.
Question for Mike Biel -- when you were reviewing the WMAQ/NBC collection
at Northwestern, did you run across any information on Wetzel's
activities? Or maybe even run across Wetzel himself - if he was still
alive in the 1970s he would have made an excellent interview subject! (I
don't recall offhand if his name turned up in your dissertation.)

Allow me to please echo Randy Miller's comments regarding Harry Bartell's
"Struts and Frets" postings. I enjoyed them immensely, and Randy really
summed up my sentiments well. Mr. Bartell, if you ever change your mind, or
just want to through out some additional ideas less formally, please know
that the expression of your unique perspectives and experiences is always a
welcome contribution to the group.
Thank you very much.

Regarding the post for the mp3 player at JC penney. My store doesn't carry
it, but i did order one online for [removed] which is still a great price
considering i paid around $100 for my Rio (which my son "borrowed"). with
shipping etc it came to around $36, so thanks for the post. Maybe it won't
eat batteries as fast as the Rio. I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I
just went to the JCP website and put it in the search engine. Thanks
again. MJS

Subject: Molly/Allen The Belmont
Hey Everyone,
One last mention of the Molly absence: seems as though nobody has primary
source info on her absence beyond the granddaughter's interview. Sounds like
anxiety attacks or "mike fright." No alcohol involved. Is that where we
stand?
The other thing I have concerns the "Belmont On The Air" Fred Allen episode.
Was this done for a family? Was he hired to come up with something or were
they family friends? Was it recorded on a dictabelt or some other home
recording device? The date I have is 1948 but it sounds earlier, though the
quality of my copy may just make it sound older.
Seems like this may have been covered before and, if so, my apologies.
I'm just about to make my annual donation to this list and hope everyone
else is considering the same. It sure makes my day.
Best,
Nussbaum

Subject: CUNY panel--this Wednesday afternoon
I forgot to identify the address of the CUNY Graduate Center where the
OTR panel discussion will take place this Wednesday afternoon (April 9)
1:30-3:30 PM (Thank you Derek Tague for pointing this out to me) It is
365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street in Manhattan.
Again, the panel will consist of ARTHUR ANDERSON, MASON ADAMS, TERI
KEANE, and DONALD BUKA. While talking to Mr. Buka last night, I learned
that along with Art Carney, Jackson Beck, Larry Haines etc. he
participated in broadcasts of the great World War II era show "The Man
Behind the Gun." He also identified Homer Fickett, who directed
productions of The Cavalcade of America as one of his favorite directors.

What is your "holy grail" of OTR?
I've heard a tantalizing story that EVERY radio program ever broadcast over
WSM, Nashville was recorded on disks and stored at the transmitter site.
Then somebody either took them or tossed them.
Gad! EVERY Grand Ole Opry from 1925 on? That would be MY Holy Grail!!
(But I'd settle for ALL Vic & Sades and/or ALL Pays To be Ignorants.)

Nothing specifically OTR related, but still a lot of fun. Also, mention has
been made of the NPR AF piece about the shellac disks. I missed that, but I
remember a really funny "talking dog" AF piece on All Things Considered a
year or two ago. So public radio people do have a sense of humor.
