Subject: Need a Western show idea
Here's a challenge for all you western fans out there: Our re-enactment
group has been asked to do a western for the National Day of the Cowboy in
late July. Unfortunately, our pool of actors diminishes greatly in the
summer. I need a show with a very small cast AND (here's the kicker) more
women than men in the show. I don't need a script (although that would be
nice.) Just a recording of such a show will work. Once I find a good show
it is an easy matter to transcribe it to paper.

Subject: Amos And Andy
I have listened to Amos and Andy for years, and I have remembered the thing
I have been wondering about for years now.
Did the program, in its several incarnations, ever have the characters refer
directly or obliquely to their race. Was there ever an instance(s) where
they spoke about their economic condition that could be associated with
their inferior status, then, as Americans? Was any of this even ever
inferred?
White actors very occasionally appeared on the television version of A&A.
And white actors did so on the radio show (I just heard one the other day
with Spring Byington). Was the race of a white person ever mentioned on the
radio show, or referred to, or inferred?
Elizabeth, of course would know, and I hope she will chime in here. As well
as any other Amos and Andy fans.
Thanks,
Joe Postove

Subject: Bill Cosby
My wife and I had the opportunity (really more of an
honor) to see the wonderful Bill Cosby perform his
stand-up act last night in Louisville. At some point
during the set, he mentioned that his mother listened
to soap operas on the radio, which prompted an
audience member to surprisingly exclaim "On radio?".
Mr. Cosby responded by talking about his favorite
scary radio programs as a child. We all know about
Chicken Heart, but he also talked about Sorry Wrong
Number, and one that he was having problems thinking
of the name of. One audience person yelled "Inner
Sanctum". He said that was scary, but not the one he
was thinking of. Another person yelled "The Shadow".
He said that The Shadow wasn't scary. Then he said
"No, the one I'm thinking of is about the rats and the
lighthouse". Naturally, I knew, and yelled "THREE
SKELETON KEY!", which was exactly the show he was
thinking of. He went on to describe it in great
detail.
I'd love to get a copy of the Escape episode to him.
If I can find his agent's address, I think I will try
to.
Incidentally, if you do get the chance to see Mr.
Cosby, do so. It was our third time, and we've
enjoyed him very much every time. In my opinion, he's
the finest story teller alive. Even if you may not
agree with his political and social views, he's yet to
touch on those in the performances I've seen. They're
really fantastic evenings.

I'm not one for political correctness, but the half-hour sitcom
version of Amos and Andy does make me cringe a bit.
All of the shows of that era contain material which makes me cringe a
bit. One that comes to mind is a Superman episode where Perry White
objects to Lois Lane going with them on a trip because "I can't stand
women wearing pants!" There's a 1930s Jack Benny show with a some
remarks about Rochester's race (happily, that was not done in later
shows). And the Marx Brothers movie "A Day at the Races" contains a
minstrel show interlude that, besides the racial issues, would
improve the movie greatly by its absence.
A lot of 1950s TV sitcoms similarly make me cringe -- or laugh for
the wrong reasons. "I love Lucy" portrays Lucy as essentially an
undisciplined child, finding ways to get around Ricky's orders. I
know the show has a lot of good comic moments, but I find it hard to
watch for very long.
The point, for me, is that Amos 'n' Andy is no worse in that regard
than any other show of its era. I heard very few of the radio
sitcoms and understood them even less, but I did hear many of the
"Amos 'n' Andy Music Hall" shows and I saw many of the TV shows. The
TV shows, at least, challenged stereotypes as much as they
perpetuated them, since all characters, even authority figures and
professionals, were black, including doctors, lawyers, and judges.
They're using stock characters that act a bit "dumb" in order to
drive the comedy and plots of the shows, much like other sitcoms of
the day.
Exactly.
The fact that the characters are played by white actors makes it a
little disconcerting for me - sure, it was accepted at the time,
but I can see how someone who is African-American would find it
offensive.
Except that I've never heard African-Americans object on that ground
alone. And the TV show had all black actors. The objections that
I've heard is that it perpetuated stereotypes like "blacks are dumb"
(Andy), "blacks are schemers (Kingfish), etc. But I don't find much
difference between Kingfish and Sgt. Bilko, who was a white
character.

It is my understanding that the basic crack for the Enigma machine which
was critical to decode Nazi messages came from Poland and their sleuthing.
And
also a little know item is that there were more Polish fighting the Nazi
than the French. But the French got the good press and the Poles were
forgotten. Such is life.
A quick search came up with this information about the machine.

Funeral arrangements are not complete. I will post that information
