Subject: The "Best" DVD for OTR
Garpboy@[removed] [Gary R] asked:
If I want to begin to archive my OTR files to DVD's, which format should I
pick- - DVD-R or DVD+R?
With respect to one issue surrounding DVDs - compatibility - CDR-Info, has
stated that "DVD-R is clearly the most compatible DVD recording format on
the market. To assess the compatibility level of DVD Formats we created
video content on a DVD writer using DVD-R/RW and +R/RW media. These discs
were then played back in other DVD players and DVD-ROM drives -over a 1,000
combinations of drive, media and player were tested.
The content created on a DVD-R/RW writer using a write once DVD-R disc
played back in virtually all ([removed] percent) of the DVD players and DVD-ROM
drives used in the research. DVD+R discs played back in [removed] percent of the
devices tested.
Since the market for recording to DVD has developed, and different formats
have emerged, consumers have been concerned about the compatibility of their
DVD recording devices with DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. The findings
suggest that for customers who wish to create content on a DVD writer and
interchange this with other PC drives and consumer DVD players, DVD-R is the
clear format of choice."
This may not seem an important issue if the intent is to simply archive OTR
and retrieve it using the DVD device used to create the disc. However, this
could certainly become an issue if it ever became necessary to replace a DVD
drive. I have personally distributed a fair amount of OTR on DVD-R and have
not experienced problems with compatibility. It would appear that while
none of the formats is universally acceptable, DVD-R can generally be read
by most DVD devices.
I hope this information is useful.

Ron

Subject: DVDs and free CDs
Gary, I was in a store yesterday (Wal-Mart?) where they had a chart that
indicated that about half the brands of DVD players can play -R, and the
other half can play +R. So you should check your own player and see
which group it is in.
And you're right about the blank CDs not being on full rebate anymore.
I'm guessing the original reason for those sales was to get people
interested in buying computers with CD burners--and now most everybody
has those, so the need to give away the CDs is no longer there.
Many stores had near-giveaways on blank DVDs in their after-Thanksgiving
sales this year.

The Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound announce a new event for February
and invite any interested OTR folks to get in touch for registration details.
"It will be classy, low-key and fun!" says Mike Sprague, the leader
of
the steering committee putting together the plans for this brand new REPS
program.
Essentially, the group will be presenting a day of Old Time Radio with
familiar stars, but far fewer of them and with a different philosophy.
Various people, now on the committee, had some nostalgic feelings about the
early
days of REPS conventions and they had a desire to create them again.
Commented REPS charter member Bob Herman "We were smaller and much
more
focused back then. It was an intimate experience and it was simpler; a
pleasant time."
THE DATE AND LOCATION
February 5th is the date, running from 10:30 AM until 4 PM, and it also
will serve as the REPS meeting for the month.
It will be held at the extraordinarily nice and elegant Emerald Heights
Retirement Community in Redmond, WA, one of the nicest in the country. This
is where the first REPS honorary member, John Archer, lived before his death
and where John's widow Ann still resides.
THE PLAYERS
Health and other circumstances permitting, the stars will include OTR
favorites: Doug Young, Gil Stratton, Jr., Anne Whitfield Phillips, Art Gilmore
and Dick Beals. They will be joined by Frank Buxton, Larry Albert, Jim
French and Esther Geddes McVey. There are a couple of surprises being worked
on
related to the guest list.
THE PROGRAM
There will be two major re-creations, one to start the day and one to
finish it. Then, in the middle of the day, the committee anticipates a
segment entitled "Do Twist That Dial!" where 5-7 minute portions of
several
favorites will be re-created.
The Memory Lane With the Stars will focus on some of the stars in a
fresh way. There will also be a Radio Improv segment where the audience
defines
the type and circumstances of a radio show, and an outside group of actors
have to create it on the spot-including music and sound effects.
"We're committed to seeing that the OTR stars have a totally relaxing
day," said Sprague, "and that everyone in attendance is doing the same."
REGISTRATION
The group has decided to limit registrations to 99 and anticipates no
real publicity going out. Dick Beals, enthusiastic as always, stated "With
400 Emerald Heights residents, a 200 person waiting list plus REPS members,
we'll have a full house that is overflowing with pleasure." The fee will
be just
$29.
A FINAL COMMENT
As the various pieces of the event began to fall in place, REPS member
and true radio enthusiast, Larry Albert was heard to say, "This thing just
keeps getting better all the time! It's going to be great!"

Subject: Birth and death dates
Ron Sayles just commented on the problem of different birth or death dates
for various OTR people.
That was a problem I had while I was on the library faculty at Sangamon
State University. A student would come in and look for this information
only to be confronted by the problem. While I was on duty as reference
librarian, we "solved" the problem by taking into account the reputation and
general reliability of each reference source. I recall problems regarding
famous, and not-so-famous people. In checking the Webster's Biographical
Dictionary, several encyclopedias, a specialized reference work (such as
Baker's Dictionary of Music & Musicians, the Kunitz author series, etc.), we
came up with a date that all agreed on. Then when we went into the
Dictionary of American Biography, we found a different date. In checking
our copy of Mudge/Winchell (or what ever it is called now) for advice, we
used the DAB as our authority, or Who's who in America, etc. My advice to
the student with this problem was to cite the disparity in his paper and
give the rationale for choosing one date over another, or simply citing both
dates. It was kind of like being the "Sherlock Holmes of the Library"!

Subject: crashed hard drive
I am just letting everybody know that my hard drive crashed and had to be
replaced last Sunday. Of course I lost everything. Therefore, many
people on this list who have written me in the past will have to send me
their information again so I can put you back in my address book etc.
Yes, I know I should have backed everything up, but I never really
learned how to do that, and I need to. Thank you for everybody's
patience in this matter. Kurt

Subject: The Whistler Not A Puzzle
Roger Lorette asked:
Was there another Whistler series that isn't recognized by the hobby?
Arethese shows incorrectly dated and numbered?
The 50 shows are incorrectly dated, through a typographical error it
seems, as episode #522 of the Whistler was broadcast May 11, 1952 not
in 1942.

Subject: Arthur Godfrey 1936
Joe Mckey's interesting post of "Those Were The Days" in radio history for
October 11th in 1936 mentioned that Arthur Godfrey was an announcer for
"Professor Quiz," the first national quiz show on radio. Might there be
airchecks
available of the Ol' Redhead announcing on that show? (...presumably it was
when he was with WJSV also doing the morning show.) Thanks for the reply.
