Subject: AFRTS discs

 From Fred Berney:

 >A friend of mine has supplied me with a number of AFRTS discs. These
 >re 12" not 16".

 >The programs are Golden Days of Radio, Grand Ole Opry, Vincent Price
 >Show, Gershwin TV special, CBS Mystery Theater, You Are There,
 >Doctor's House Call, Suspense, Challenge Biographies with scripted intros.

 >I have not had a chance to look at all the labels, but I did notice
 >that on one of the Suspense discs, There are 1980 rubber stamps dates
 >and the disc number is RU 19-0 1056.

 >I didn't realize that AFR was putting out discs of radio shows in the
1980's.

Hi Fred,

Yes, I have several thousand of these discs. Actually they are standard
microgroove records. Make sure you play them using a 1 mil conical or
[removed] mil elliptical stylus or you'll ruin the records. I'm not positive
as to when AFRTS began using these records, but mine date between 1960
and 1994. Everything past that point were recorded to cassettes. These
records would hold up to 30 minutes per side as opposed to the earlier
16" standard grove discs that would only hold only about 17 minutes per
side. So they could fit a complete half-hour show on to one side of the
record. Generally, when they recorded an Old Time Radio program on one
side, they would record a contemporary program on the other side. Often
these were AFRTS productions. Don't overlook the second side, some of
those shows are really good. In August of last year, I played on my
broadcast, the first part of a three part John Wilson's "World of Jazz"
trilogy in which John paid tribute to the great Louis Armstrong on the
occasion of his 65th birthday in 1966. Being a Jazz Lover, I really
enjoyed this entire series, and by the comments I received, so did many
of my listeners.

Incidentally, speaking of Transcription Discs, beginning last month, I
started doing something I should have been doing all [removed]
all of my disc labels as I record the discs. I have about 250,000
discs, so this will not be a short-term project, but I do plan to be
aggressive in adding these labels. So check the list often. Here is a
link to the Label display:

You mentioned, as part or your record collection, some "Golden Days of
Radio" programs This was an excellent series produced and hosted by my
friend Frank Bresee. I have all 2,739 episodes of Frank's GDOR
broadcasts. The series ran for 30 years, from 1965 till 1995. Up
through 1994 the series is all on those same microgrove records. Then
in 1995, it was produced on cassettes. If you'd like to see what those
cassettes look like, I have posted both sides here:
<[removed]>. Frank Bresee has been
a pioneer in the preservation of the "Golden Days of Radio." He starred
in many radio and television programs, appearing as Little Beaver in the
"Red Ryder" series.
He also produced tons of programs and interviews with just about any
star you can think of. As you probably know, He, along with another
close friend of mine, Walden Hughes, has helped keep hobbyists
entertained for decades on Bill Bragg's excellent Yesterday USA
service. Frank suffered a major stroke about a year ago. Although this
stroke has hampered his ability to do much to preserve this hobby that
has us all hooked on, he nonetheless wants to continue doing as much as
possible to keep this hobby alive and well.

To help keep his dream alive and to honor my friend, Frank Bresee, I am
planning to air his "Golden Days of Radio" series beginning in the very
near future on my OLDE TYME RADIO NETWORK at [removed]
I know every one in this crazy hobby will be thoroughly entertained by
listening to Frank's programs.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Take care,

Jerry

Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!
