Subject: Geez!

After some discussion about a "forbidden word" and the FCC, the
Administrator noted,

ADMINISTRIVIA: Ok, folks, recent FCC rulings have nothing whatsoever to
do with OTR, so let's move on. --cfs3

Here's something to move on to: the "cusswords" of OTR. The great W. C.
Fields always exclaimed, "Godfrey Daniel!" with heavy emphasis on the
first syllables, to imply "God damn!" (The only broadcasts you could
hear "Hell" on were sermons from broadcast church services, and during
the war, the name of the Grumman Hellcat fighter aircraft.)

Can anything recall other OTR circumlocutions?

Subject: The Buzz Is ...

Kenneth Clarke, speaking of The Green Hornet, notes,

Another factoid dealt with the sound the Hornet's car made. One
collector told me that the car used by the Hornet made a buzzing sound
due to a defect of some kind with the engine.

I believe that collector is in error. The buzzing sound was a variant of
a horn or siren installed to provide the car with a distinctive sound.
Rather like psychological warfare. The car, named Black Beauty after a
legendary horse, was specially built for the Hornet (it even had a
polarizing filter in its windshield) and an "engine defect" would have
caused an immediate engine swap. "Mist' Britt" was too clever for that.

I know all about the connections of the Reid group, but who is Clarabelle
Hornblow? Is she related to the Masked Man or to one of the gang members he
is forever chasing.

Subject: Difference in mp3

About two years ago I undertook a large encoding project to convert cassette
tapes my Dad had collected over 20 years to mp3. I have found 32/22 is
excellent and can yield high quality provided the encoder pays attention to
what their doing. In other words 9 times out of 10, its the result of sloppy
encoding. For example, Most of the existing copies of TALES OF THE TEXAS
RANGERS floating around the internet and from Sellers is of poor quality.
I've bought some. The reason being most of these particular shows were
encoded at 64 Kbps / 44 which is not a problem in itself, but the encoder of
these shows had the volume level set too high which causes severe distortion
especially during sound peaks. These shows when loaded in WAVE editor such
as CoolEdit will show the wave flattened out (Visually) and clipping
results. Anyone can better results at 32/22 or little bit lower simply but
not having the volume set too high during the encoding process. The volume
of the encode can be raising through software afterward without getting
these bad effects. When I did my encoding of some 2,000 of my Dads tapes two
years ago, I got good sounding mp3s ay 32/22 and I was only using a a $100
Pioneer Cassette (low-end) but I paid attention to the volume peaks and
levels of Windows system mixer that controls the volume level of the sound
coming into your sound card. This too me is the primary problem with some
mp3s floating about.

I've been wondering why there is no reliable information on Gangbuster
shows. I can find virtually no good logs anywhere. Even the GOLD index seems
to be inadequate. For example, many of the shows in the GOLD index list as
original airdates of many Gangbuster shows as their source date, their
broadcast in syndication in late 1960s and 1970s on WRVR-FM, New York. Is
there no further information as to their "original air date" even just as to
year? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Subject: Hear FDR's Declaration of War and House
 Debate

Walden Hughes' Sunday night OTR program on YesterdayUSA is returning this
weekend after three weeks off. Because the date is Sunday December 7,
Walden and I will be discussing and playing the recordings of President
Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor Declaration of War address and the debate from the
House of Representatives which followed it and was broadcast by Mutual and
CBS. The program will start at 10:30 PM and can be heard at
[removed] Phone calls from any of you are welcome, and
Walden will be announcing the phone number during the program.

We already have our plans for the next two broadcasts, and I think these
will interest all of you. Next week we will be playing and discussing
Norman Corwin's "We Hold These Truths" and will be using a high quality
recording of the program that is probably no more than two generations away
from the original discs. I've put together a direct comparison between
this version and the horrible one that Radio Spirits is using, and I think
that even when heard on an Internet stream you will be easily able to hear
the enormous difference in sound quality. So in addition to this landmark
broadcast, we'll be discussing OTR sound quality. So that's on Sunday
December 14--one day shy of the anniversary of the original 1941 broadcast.

The following week, on December 21 we will be discussing Amos 'n' Andy and
Sam 'n' Henry. I will be playing the newly rediscovered recording of the
earliest known Amos 'n' Andy broadcast, Episode 26 aired April 23, 1928,
and a documentary about the program based on an interview with Charles
Correll by Eddie Hubbard on WGN May 29, 1969. We'll also be playing the
two songs about Amos 'n' Andy that were discussed on the digest a few
weeks ago. None of these recordings are in circulation yet, so this will
be your first chance to hear these historic recordings.

So, we hope you'll be listening, Sundays at 10:30 PM EST at

I _know_ "The Island" is an episode of Escape. So why is it listed as an
episode of Suspense?

For the same reason two of the shows on the Burns & Allen CD I gave Mom last
year happen to actually be Gang Busters programs with wrong names. I'll bet
she doesn't sleep through that racket!

I like the fundraiser CD. The video programs are a great addition too. I
didn't know the Lone Ranger TV program was once sponsored by Tootsie Roll.

Subject: Jimmy Barton At The Circus

I know this must have come up before regarding the mysterious child actor
who played Jimmy Barton on the Cinnamon Bear, but thought I'd post since I
heard it for the first time. In Jerry of the Circus Episode 52 one of the
children at the hospital Jerry talks to is the actor who played Jimmy. I
don't suppose there is any more reliable information about Jerry than there
is on the Cinnamon Bear but thought I'd point out his appearance. Has anyone
heard him on any other shows?

Subject: Gunsmoke inquiry

I've been listening to some Christmas holiday-themed shows as of late, and I
have a question--there is a character in the Gunsmoke episode "Christmas
Story," a handyman named John Bomby played by John Dehner. Isn't this the
guy that they used to insert in joke-type fashion into many of the "Dirty
Saturdays" rehearsals? You can hear him popping in and out during "The New
Hotel" and it sounds like the same guy ("[removed], [removed]" "Hiya,
