Subject: John Dunning's Books

 Phil C. commented:

Obviously one of John Dunning's goals for "On the Air: The Encyclopedia of
Old-Time Radio" was to correct errors made in his earlier version ("Tune in
Yesterday: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio 1925-1976") and
doubtless he succeeded. Therefore I find it interesting that a correct fact
in the earlier book was changed into an incorrect one in his revised book.
In "Tune in Yesterday" he correctly named a character on the Jimmy Durante
Show as Hotbreath Houlihan but in the revised book the name given is Hotlips
Houlihan. That obviously shows what a strong influence the TV series
M*A*S*H had!

The best part about second editions and revised editions is that incorrect
information often gets corrected. I have thousands of books filling almost
two dozen book shelves and I don't think there is a single book that doens't
have a mistake or two somewhere. It's not uncommon for a second or revised
edition of a book to make a mistake, believing a correction is being made,
but the hundreds of minor corrections and additional details outweigh the one
or two errors. The good thing is someone is taking the time to make the
corrections, and pencils are used to jot down the corrections in the books.

While Phil's point is valid, it should be noted in general that there is a
difference between the types of incorrect information. Older books often have
errors (Dunning's has hundreds) but they were not done on purpose and were
accurate at the time the book was printed. New information is found every day
and only after a book gets printed does new information come to light to
reveal something no one knew before.

Case in point, Dunning's entry on THE SHADOW. There are more than two dozen
glaring errors in that episode entry alone. Dunning isn't at fault, though,
because at the time the book was written, all of today's errors were
yesterday's facts. Summed up, while a book from the 1970s on a particular
radio program (say for example, THE LONE RANGER) has dozens of errors today,
they were facts back then. And the new information eventually comes to print
and reveals the truth about what we did not know three decades ago.

but I think you may be talking about the programs aired to our troops
overseas. The commercials were removed for broadcasting by AFRTS and
patriotic bits along with USAFI

I know what you're talking about but none of these were AFRTS shows. The
Fibber and Molly shows still contained the NBC chimes and IDs, numerous
promos for shows ranging from "You Bet Your Life" to "The Roy Rogers Show" to
"Barry Craig," and many of them had commercials for Carters Little Liver
Pills, Tums, Richard Hudnut Hair Products, and Arrid deodorant. Plus the
"Our
Miss Brooks" episode I mentioned had all its Palmolive, Lustre Creme and
Colgate commercials intact, along with the CBS system cue. So these clearly
came from the commercial networks, an edited AFRS show wouldn't have had
these.

Dunning also lists the writers of "My Favorite Husband" as "Bob Carroll Jr.
and Madelyn Pugh" - omitting the head writer. Where he got this info is a
mystery, because every single episode from 1949 to 1951 includes closing
on-air credits in which the announcer, Bob LeMond, says, "The program was
directed by Jess Oppenheimer, who wrote the script together with Madelyn Pugh
and Bob Carroll Jr."

Subject: Lum and Abner

I would like to invite everyone to visit the National Lum and Abner Society
web site. We just had a great time in Mena, Arkansas at the 2011 Lum and
Abner Festival. There is full coverage of our events on the site.

Also, I am honored to announce the new "Lum and Abner" comic strip! I am the
writer-cartoonist for this project which is being published online by First
Arkansas News. They are negotiating with editors for printed distribution as
well. Sponsors are needed for this to continue, of course. The first strip is
online now and a new one will be published each Sunday. Additionally, we are
offering a "click to listen" link which will allow the reader to hear an
audio dramatization with voices, music and sound effects. Please check the
strip out at

Thank you so much!
