Hands [removed] is the most frightening radio program you have ever heard?
The one episode that stands out as really frightening me the first time I
heard it was "Three Skeleton Key". It was the version from ESCAPE with
Vincent Price.

Subject: Scary shows
In #176, Randy Story asked:
Hands [removed] is the most frightening radio
program you have ever heard? The one that makes
your blood run cold when you think of it. The
one that perhaps gave you nightmares.
Two spring immediately to mind:
1) Suspense - House in Cypress Canyon -- I know, I know, it's cliche. But
there was this one time I was listening to it while drifting off to sleep. I
was almost all the way to sleep when the creature's final really loud scream
bounced me out of bed with a heart rate of about 180 BPM. The memory of that
first second and half of terrified confusion (when my sleepy brain wasn't
processing what was going on around me) still haunts me a little when I hear
it today.
2) Suspense - Black Door -- Mysterious ancient temples, a dark cave, a
terrified race to the surface, and really effective dog howl sound effects
make this one still creepy.

Subject: OTR recreation script
In #176, Steve Lewis asked:
I'm looking for an OTR recreation to do with the
Gotham Radio Players which will feature a
special guest star, actor Simon Jones [snip]
Okay, this isn't a perfect suggestion, but it's one of my favorite shows, so
I'll suggest it anyway. Why not "A Gun for Dinosaur" from Dimension X/X
minus 1?
It's not a lost show, but it's not one of the common scifi shows that are put
into every package. Admittedly, it's not a comedy, but it would work great
with a mature English accent and I think I remember around 7 roles.
The first thing I thought of,

Subject: TV Land Salutes Warner Brothers
TV Land is running a salute to Warner Brothers TV this weekend.
For fans of the Friends of Old Time Radio Convention frequent ringer guest
Will Hutchins, it's an opportunity to see episodes of his television show
"Sugarfoot."
Real OTR actor Dick Van Patten also appears in the "Eight is Enough" series.
I'm sure there are many, many more OTR stars in some of these shows but those
are two that jumped out at me.

- It doesn't necessarily have to be a lost show
- Simon has an English accent
- he's got a mature voice,
He could play George Fotheringay in Escape's version of H. G. Wells'
"The Man Who Could Work Miracles." It's a science-fantasy comedy and
ends with the world being destroyed, almost.

One of the scariest at the moment was Arch Oboler's, "Gravestone" aka
"Poltergeist."It was also on "The Devil And Mr. O" in the 1970's.

Politics Again
The statue of Jack Benny in Waukeegan continues to be an example of government pork used to illustrate bad government behavior there.
If we could get our elected officials here in New Jersey to start building statues of famous entertainers and stop handing their boyfriends six-figure jobs for which they aren't qualified, I would take that trade-off.

Hi listers.
The scariest show I ever remember hearing on the radio was an episode of the
Sleep No More program that was on WMAQ in Chicago in the late 50s. The ep
that made my skin crawl when I was ten or eleven years old concerned a man
that was buried alive. He came to in the coffin shortly after the show
started and the rest was his reaction when he figured out what had happened,
such as a lot of yelling and scratching. Come to think of it, it still makes
me shiver.

Subject: future of OTR
Hi Everybody,
those of you who enjoy this hobby should check out [removed] and look
under there press release and read the 2004 year end report. They are
changing there business model they are going from selling hard items like
tapes and CD to distribution of it through digital like down loading and
broadcasting. They are having a major drop of in sales and a major increase
in losses. I believe if you see any of there products in store especially
at a discount you might want to start considering picking them up. I know
some of the small dealers have been going through a change in there business
over the last few years too and if they have some thing you might like it
might be a good idea to pick them up soon. The broadcasting of OTR has been
under a major change too on AM and FM radio over the last few years. Los
Angels for many years was a strong broadcasting market for OTR. We enjoyed
two hour a day on KNX plus a couple of weekly show on FM. We are down to
one show on FM once a month from midnight to 3 AM or or when the main host
want to to continue to play some show until he goes off the air. I think
there is still one more FM station that play a hour of OTR on Sunday after
noon but there station has a very weak signal that I can not pick up from my
home. We are bless to have the internet to hear other station around the
country. I understand that When Radio Was is on 200 station around the
country, but they never have enjoy a long run in the Los Angeles market over
the year on different station. I was talking to a program director for a
series of radio station up in Northern California and he plays the Twilight
Zone on one of his station but he mainly chooses national talk shows and he
receive a magazine called Talkers that list over 200 national talk show
that can be pick up by local station. I thought some of you might wanted to
keep tab on what going on in the business side of OTR. Take care,
Walden Hughes

Some of you have been anticipating the arrival of "Music Radio," my newest
book. So have I! I've been informed by publisher McFarland & Co. that its
release has been delayed and it should be available by the end of the month.
No guarantees, of course. It's about to become "the longest book ever
published," at least for yours truly, now approaching 15 months since it
left my hands. Because it is chock full of so much information, I'd like to
think it will be well worth the wait. In case you've ordered it, join me in
a heaping dose of patience for just a little longer.

The latest "WTIC's Golden Age of Radio" programs
with Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran, can be heard at
[removed]
We present three complete shows in MP3 format for
your listening pleasure or for downloading, plus a bonus:
the NBC newscast as broadcast by WTIC preceding the
first Golden Age show in April, 1970.
Program 17 - August, 1971 - Hans Conried
(*The original program heard on that date; See "New:
The Lost Shows!" at our website for a complete
explanation.)
(This program comes to us from the collection of
David S. Siegel)
Mr. Conried's radio career began in 1936, and as we'll
hear, spanned two decades. He was also a prolific film,
stage, and TV actor.
Program 39 - June, 1973 - Tony Marvin
(*The original program heard on that date;
See "New: The Lost Shows!" at our website for a complete
explanation.)
(This program also comes to us from the collection of
David S. Siegel)
Marvin joined CBS in 1939 as an announcer and a newsman,
but is perhaps best known as Arthur Godfrey's sidekick.
Program 43
October, 1973 - Jack Pearl, Peter Donald, Will Jordan
This program spans three generations, with Jack "Baron
Munchausen" Pearl, Peter "Ajax Cassidy" Donald, and Will
"Ed Sullivan" Jordan.
In the 1970's Dick Bertel created the program for WTIC in
Hartford, CT. The idea came to Dick after he interviewed radio
collector-historian Ed Corcoran a few times on his radio and
TV shows. "The Golden Age of Radio was first broadcast in
April, 1970; Ed was Dick's co-host.
For the next seven years the program featured interviews with
actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians from radio's
early days. Each show featured excerpts from Ed's collection.
"WTIC's Golden Age of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights
on Walden Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

Has anyone heard of a British magazine called "Radio Days?" I've been
told that in the first issue (1999) they had a long article about a
hoax broadcast on the BBC in 1926; the broadcast was masterminded by
Ronald Knox, devised the grand game that Sherlockians play.
Would like to find a copy of the [removed] the article.
