Subject: The Carters (not of Elm Street)
Ken Stockinger writes:
My wife and I saw the terrific Johnny Cash movie"Walk the Line"
recently. In it, the young Johnny Cash listens to the Carter Family on the
radio. Ever since, my wife has been wondering if there really was a Carter
Family radio show.
The Original Carter Family included Alvin Pleasant (A. P.) Carter, his wife
Sarah and Maybelle Carter. Later, A. P., Sarah, Joe and Jeanette recorded
together as the Carter Family on Bluebird and Acme labels. Maybelle, who
became
an important figure as a zither strummer, was the mother of three daughters,
Helen, Anita, and June. The four women subsequently became a touring
performing
team.
I know the Carters were regulars on WBT, Charlotte in the late 1930s or early
1940s. From there they moved to WRVA, Richmond, if I'm not mistaken.
Eventually the surviving Mommy Maybelle and daughters moved to Nashville and
became regulars on the Opry. To state that they had their own show there
would
be doubtful, although someone might be able to confirm it.
When Johnny Cash married June, Maybelle and the girls began touring with the
Cash outfit. Maybelle eventually dropped out due to declining health but the
girls continued to perform and two were still an integral part of the stage
act
I saw in Louisville maybe a decade ago.
The Cash show, incidentally, was well worth the money. On that occasion, he
was
on stage the full two-and-a-half hours, and participated in singing 23 of his
more famous numbers. A week earlier I had seen another Nashville legend
perform
at the same Louisville venue and he was so drunk or high, he arrived on stage
nearly two hours after his show began -- warbled a half-dozen numbers (he was
propped up) -- and departed within 25 minutes, not taking a curtain call.
Cash
showed true humility and greatness at the same time. Class!

Subject: RE: Carter Family
Ken "The Man in Mauve" Stockinger asks if the Carter Family ever had its own
radio show. Indeed it did and transcriptions still exist. In fact some have
been issued on Old Homestead records.
In the early 40s prior to the original Carter Family disbanding, [removed], Sara,
and Maybelle Carter along with their respective children Janette, June,
Helen and Anita, broadcast over Boarder Blaster XERA, Del Rio, Texas.
Later on "The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle" were cast members of the
Grand OLE Opry and may have done an early morning daily show at WSM. The
group also appeared on stations in Richmond VA including WRVA and WRNL
(where they DEFINITELY had a show of their own).
For what it's worth--I am glad I saw "Walk the Line," but having seen June
Carter in person and hearing her many times on the Opry, Reese Witherspoon
IN NO WAY captured the personality and performing style of June Carter.
A (much) younger Carol Burnett could have done June perfectly.

...was Bergen's later ventriloquial friend, the spinsterish Effie
Klinker, named after his writer Zeno Klinker?
Many years ago, Zeno Klinker put on a funny hour-long show at our company
engineering banquet with a 16-mm reel of aviation history with an
emphasis on things that went wrong. He stated during the show that he
was one of Bergen's writers and was honored to have Effie named for him.

Subject: Re: TRANSCO transcription programs
Trav dismisses the TRANSCO output pretty harshly in today's Digest:
Except for the Cinnamon Bear, most of the Transcos I've come across have
been pretty wretched,
even for early syndicated shows.
Well, I have to admit (maybe it's a 'guilty pleasure' thang) that I'm rather
fond of some of the TRANSCO stuff, particularly STRANGE ADVENTURES IN
STRANGE LANDS and MOON OVER AFRICA, which is a really fun weird-mystery
jungle-adventure (and whose "Jack" character, in the voice timbre, is
clearly the source for Jack Flanders of THE FOURTH TOWER OF INVERNESS and
other ZBS epics).
In addition, I treasure the TRANSCO dramatic shows because they're really
about the only recordings existing of the earliest appearances of
mid-Thirties Los Angeles radio stalwarts like Gale Gordon, Hanley Stafford,
Jeanette Nolan, John McIntire, Cy Kendall, True Boardman, Lindsay McHarrie,
and Georgia Fifield.
So I say, Viva TRANSCO!
Mike Ogden
(who just finished listening to all 26 extant chapters of MOON OVER AFRICA
for the umpteenth time)

RE PAUL HUGHES AND HIS CHARACTERS ON THE WXYZ SHOWS.
I acted across the mike from Paul Hughes many times and can
authenticate that he is indeed the gravel voice everyone remembers.
He was a great actor and esteemed [removed] guess that next to the
voices of Brace Beemer and John Todd Paul's was the most recognizable
OF THE WIXIE guys. As I'm sure everyone knows Paul was also on the
Yukon and Green Hornet.
I'll always remember his patented voice playing a slippery lawyer and
saying things like "You don't have to read that contract granny, just
sign it right there and everything will be all right".. Or playing a
slippery banker saying things like "Granny, you know your money and
mortgage will be save with me and my bank." SURE they will,
I'm at the point with my OTR documentary that I wish I had a picture
of Paul - also YUKON director Fred Flowerday. CAN ANYONE HELP???

Recently, Derek Teague asked 'Did Candice Bergen have any other
brothers and sisters?' He mentioned Charlie McCarthy, Mortimer Snerd,
and Effie Klinker. The answer is yes, there was another one. Her name
Podine Puffington. According to her book, "Knock Wood", Candice
mentioned all of the 'brothers and sisters' her father Edgar Bergen had
as a part of his act. She even mentioned that when the Bergen family
went on picnics and leisurely drives in the country, her father would bring
them along. There are several photos in the book with her and Edgar
with Charlie, Mortimer, Effie, and Podine.
I can't say that I remember any eps which had Effie and/or Podine as
part of the performance. The only ones I can recall, and have, are with
Charlie and Mortimer.
I hope this helps!

In researching the life of Barbara Jean Wong, who played "Judy Barton" in
THE CINNAMON BEAR, I learned that she was a cast member of AMOS 'N'

Writer Sam Chu Lin notes, "As a cast member of AMOS 'N' ANDY, she was
always introduced to the audience early so they would not be surprised to
see she was a Chinese American and not an African American girl."
I am wondering why it was necessary to do this.

Someone wanted to know, in a post, why we keep the Cincinnati convention a
secret. We are doing our best not to. We do local press releases, and Barb
Davies is contacted retirement centers in our area. After being around for 20
years most people in the hobby do know about us. I appeal to anyone who
reads the ORT Digest to spread the word. If you are coming bring a friend. We
have flyers we can email. Feel free to call and my toll free number 888 477

I'm a graduate student in Film and Media Studies at the University of
California at Santa Barbara. I'm currently researching the 40's Mutual
radio show "Calling All Detectives." I've listened to several episodes,
but only a few have the call-in component (my primary research focus)
recorded nor I couldn't find any from 1945, the series' origin. I'm
interested in tracing the trajectory of the show as well as the
creation of "spatial" aural environments in detective radio.

Subject: Superman fights the Klan
Seems like this may have come up a while back on the
Digest, so I apologise if it's repetitive. But I
recently read the book Freakonomics, and in it is a
story about how an anti-KKK crusader infiltrated the
Klan, and then fed inside info about it to the writers
of the Superman radio series. The writers then used
that info in a storyline in which Superman fights the
Klan. The authentic details blew the organisation's
secret rituals and made them seem ridiculous (not hard
to do) to the nation's children.
The question, of course, is, when did those episodes
air and are they in circulation?
