Haven't seen this mentioned yet, but the National Radio Hall of Fame, in
honor of its new facility, is inducting a non-voted, all-OTR class of
inductees this year. They include personalities Ronald Reagan, Graham
McNamee and
H. V. Kaltenborn, and radio shows "The National Barn Dance,"
"Gangbusters," "The Great Gildersleeve" and the one I've been waiting to see
inducted
for years: "Suspense."

Subject: "Lum and Abner" in "Christmas in July" on YUSA

I've been invited to be a guest on Walden and Patricia's "Saturday Night"
show on YUSA this Saturday at 9:30 CST, 10:30 EST. They will air one of the
"Lum and Abner" performances of the "Traditional Christmas Story" as well as
an interview with Chet Lauck about the origins of that classic broadcast.
I'll be discussing the Christmas show, the "Lum and Abner" comic strip, and
anything else they ask about. Patricia says the program is live on "Yesterday
USA - [removed] (click on the little radio icon at the upper left
of the page) or iTunes radio in the 'News/Talk' category." Listeners are
encouraged to call in and keep me from babbling so much. Seriously! Give them
a call and ask questions, make comments, etc. We look forward to hearing from
you. The number to call is 714-545-2071. Thanks!

Subject: Agnes Nixon

Who knew Agnes Nixon was still around? (I mean, other than Jim Cox,
of course.) Yet there she was, issuing a press release on July 7,
2011, praising ABC's decision to not cancel her TV soaps "One Life to
Live" and "All My Children" but to move them from network airing to
the Internet, where fans can continue to enjoy them.

Nixon was a protege of the indomitable Irna Phillips and was on the
latter's writing staff for years. In the early 1950s Phillips moved
her radio soap programs to TV, including "These Are My Children",
"The Guiding Light", "The Brighter Day" and "Another World." Nixon co-
created "Search For Tomorrow" in 1951. When Phillips bowed out of
script writing, Nixon took over as head TV writer on ""The Guiding
Light" and "Another World." Nixon later created and wrote two other
TV soaps; in 1968 "One Life to Live and in 1970, "All My Children",
both of which ran continuously until this month.

In her press release, Nixon thanked all her fans over the past four
decades who "whom we love and who have been so supportive" of her
shows. ABC in turn, through a spokesperson, promised that in these
Web productions, they would "honor the core, passionate audience in a
manner that respects the longstanding hopes of the many viewers."

Nixon, now 83, was born in Chicago, IL and graduated as a drama major
at Northwestern University, where her classmates were Charlton
Heston, Patricia Neal, and Cloris Leachman. Within months of
graduation, she had a script accepted by Irna Phillips, who promptly
hired her to write dialogue for "Women in White." Over the years,
Nixon not only wrote soap operas, she frequently appeared as an
actress in them. Her most recent trip into the spotlight was the June
2010 Emmy Award Ceremonies in which she won an Emmy for Lifetime
Achievement.

Subject: Lest We Forget/Master's Thesis

Hey Folks,
I have been around these parts for awhile and now have a request. I am
working on a master's thesis regarding radio and politics on the radio in the
1930s and 1940s and need some help. I have 42 Lest We Forget programs and Mr.
Hickerson's invaluable guide shows 74 programs are in circulation--I wonder
if anyone has any shows I don't. I am in the first flailing stages of
researching this program through its distributors the Institute for
Democratic Education and the Institute for Oral and Visual Education both of
which were affiliated with Boston University's Radio Institute and it is
sometimes listed under the various subtitles it used such as: One Nation
Indivisible, The Story of Our Free America, A Better World for Youth, The New
Frontier, Democracy
Is Our Way Of Life, These Great Americans, The Story Of America and Our
Battle Won Freedom, Our Constitution, Our Nation's Shrines, America
Determines Her Destiny, Eternal Vigilance Is The Price Of Liberty, Stories To
Remember, and The American Dream.
If anyone has copies of the show or information regarding it they would like
to share I would be most appreciative. You may mail me off list at:
skostele@[removed].
Thanks for listening,
Steve Kostelecky
