Subject: report on AM transmitting OTR to old radios

Hi,

When I mentioned I had ordered a micro AM transmitter,
some people were keen on the results. I just got it
today. It's the SSTRAN AMT3000. Being low power, as
dictated by the FCC, it's not going to go far. In
fact, I had to put the antenna behind the radio to get
clear reception, but the signal is very clear when
this is done.

I'm listening to Jack Armstrong on my 1937 RCA 810K-1.
After Amos N Andy goes off on SW at 12:15, I'll
switch to the Zenith for Inner Sanctum! I have 5
working consoles to choose from, so I can switch it
up. They all sound pretty good on OTR. Not as good
as hi-quality modern speakers, of course, but still,
quality of clear AM radio.

The first program I debuted on my micro station (can't
be heard outside of my place, it's only 1/10 watt) was
I Love A Mystery!
And it doesn't seem to interfere with cell phones, or
anything else, in case you're wondering.

Separately, does anyone know if Bob Bailey did any TV where we might be
able
to catch a glimpse of him on TVLand or some other rerun channel?

Based on an interview with Bob Bailey's daughter that was aired by John
Dunning some years ago, Bob was the writer of the "Fury" program. I checked
the IMDB reference for "Fury" some time ago, and Robert Bailey was not
listed. I checked this morning and now he has been added. The link
provides the following references to Robert Bailey:

# "Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans" (writer) (as Bob Bailey)
... aka Hawkeye
... aka Last of the Mohicans (Canada: English title)
    - Snake Tattoo (1957) TV Episode (as Bob Bailey)
# "Fury" (writer) (as Robert Bailey)
... aka Brave Stallion (USA: syndication title)
    - Joey's Dame Trouble (1955) TV Episode (as Robert Bailey)
# Underwater! (1955) (story)
... aka The Big Rainbow (USA)

The only other reference I knew of to Bob after the end of his radio days
was a brief appearance as a reporter at the end of "The Birdman of
Alcatraz", so who knows what else may be out there.

Hope this helps. I learned something today!

From Those Were The Days --

6/12

1947 - Sergeant Preston of The Yukon went national for the first time.
The show, with the Canadian Mountie and his trusty dog, King, continued
on the radio until 1955, beginning on WXYZ Detroit in 1938. Sgt. Preston
was created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created The
Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet.

1955 - The first network radio show to be produced with no script, The
University of Chicago Round Table, was heard for the final time on NBC.
The program was the first network radio program to win the coveted
George Foster Peabody Award.

1955 - "This is Monitor, a weekend program service of NBC Radio," was
heard for the first time. Notables such as Bill Cullen, Ed McMahon, Hugh
Downs, and Dave Garroway recited this line. It was a network cue to NBC
radio stations across the nation who carried the long form news,
entertainment and variety broadcast from New York City. Stations and
listeners who were "on the Monitor beacon" were entertained for six
hours or more each Saturday and Sunday night for nearly two decades.
NBC's Monitor was one of the last live network radio programs on the air.

6/13

1944 - The wire recorder was patented by Marvin Camras.

6/14

1922 - A [removed] President was heard on the radio for the first time.
President Warren G. Harding dedicated the Francis Scott Key Memorial and
was heard on WEAR in Baltimore.

1950 - Harold Peary played the leading role of The Great Gildersleeve
one final time. Willard Waterman took Peary's place in the role.

6/15

1936 - Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler starred in Burlesque on the Lux Radio
Theatre.

6/17

1942 - Suspense, known as radio's outstanding theatre of thrills,
debuted on CBS. The program kept millions of loyal listeners in suspense
for the next 20 years (and three months, for the purists <g> -ed)

Subject: Bob Bailey

Mr. Webb's question about the wonderful Bob Bailey's video work prompted me
to have a look over at imdb. BB is credited on individual episodes of
several largely forgotten, largely crime-related series of the 50s: M
SQUAD, ASPHALT JUNGLE, 87TH PRECINCT (I never even knew those books became
a series!), TALES OF WELLS FARGO, [removed] There are also movies: he was
the leading man in two of Laurel and Hardy's depressing 20th Century-Fox
features: JITTERBUGS and THE DANCING MASTERS. (These probably represent the
easiest ways to see him at length nowadays.)

Then a succession of parts and walkons, ending with an uncredited role as a
dockside reporter in THE BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ. One interesting footnote is
that after BIRDMAN there's a twenty-year gap and then suddenly a credit as a
waiter on a single episode of a short-lived Aaron Spelling series called
FINDER OF LOST LOVES in 1984! It says he was credited as "Robert Baile."
I don't know, maybe it's a mistake, but if he did shoot one last thing in
the year of his death (he died 8/13/83), it would be interesting to know how
it came [removed]

Subject: The A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION movie

There are 4 movie theaters in my area. One is an independent art house, the
other three are owned by the Regal Entertainment chain. I was very much
surprised that the PHC movie was booked only into the art house. Usually
something like this would make it into at least the largest Regal theater
(the one with 18 screens). I went to a Saturday matinee at the art house,
partly because that was a convenient time for me, but also because I assumed
the evening shows would sell out early as only one theater was showing the
film. I would guess 90-95% of the seats were filled for this daytime show,
so it looks like someone at Regal really dropped the ball.

On the the move: It is very good, not great. It's great to see the behind
the scenes stuff at the Fitzgerald Theater and, yes, Meryl Streep can really
sing and, no Lindsay Lohan is not annoying and she isn't on screen that much
anyway. The one real disappointment is that there is really no depiction of
the "theater of the mind" aspect of radio. True, we get to see sound
effects man Tom Keith doing his stuff on a fake commercial (although in the
world of the film the show is on a commercial radio station and Powdermilk
Biscuits etc. are the "real" sponsors of the show.) But Guy Noir (Kevin
Kline) appears as the security director for the Fitzgerald Theater and Dusty
and Lefty (John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson) of "Tales of the Cowboys"
appear as simply a country music duo. These are fine inside jokes, but the
non-musical side of the show is totally ignored. We don't even see part of a
"News from Lake Wobegon". Now I didn't expect to see an uncut monologue, but
there wasn't even the beginning or end of one, which surprised me. In fact,
someone seeing this film who had never listened to a PHC broadcast would not
really understand how PHC is different from Grand Ole Opry. That said, the
film was quite enjoyable and I'd recommend it.

Subject: Ray - farm news

In #145, Ray asked

in the current age of radio stations being little cubby holes in some
strip mall, and farms being owned by large corporations, do any of the
stations still broadcast farm news?

Well, in Australia, the national broadcaster the ABC has farm news on at
least two of its networks daily. Radio National has a program "Bush
Telegraph" while the Local Radio Network has its own show "The Country
Hour".

[removed]

It's a different story on the commercial networks of course.
