Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA: This Week's Cincy Convention
Folks;
As most of you know, the Cincinnati Old-Time Radio and Nostalgia
Convention is later this week. After a long hiatus, my family and I will be
attending this year, so the Digest will likely be a bit delayed over the week
(not that it hasn't been somewhat unpredictable over the last few months,
[removed]).
Those of you who are attending, be sure to find me and say hello - I'll be
the routund guy running around taking photos all over the place, probably
with a constantly-refilled coffee in my hand. I haven't had the chance to
build the new fundraiser discs I had hoped to bring with me, but I'll have a
few copies of older discs available should anyone be interested. (No "hard
sell," though, honest - donations always welcomed, but I really want to meet
as many of you as possible.)
I'll also be filling-in for Derek Tague in a conversation with Eddie
Carroll on Saturday morning - while Derek will certainly be missed, I'm
delighted he asked me to sub for him and chat with Eddie, one of the "good
guys." Attendees will be able to ask questions of Eddie as well, and anyone
not attending is welcomed to email your questions to me, and I'll include as
many as time permits. I may even check my Twitter timeline during the
conversation, to pick up any last-minute questions you might think of.
Seriously, how "geek" is that?
Speaking of those who _aren't_ attending, my plans call for
"micro-blogging" via Twitter throughout the convention via my cell phone and
the web. To add the updates to your timeline, simply follow CFSummers - if
you don't have a Twitter account (don't worry, Twitter accounts are free),
you can watch [removed] or even monitor the RSS feed there.
(I had hoped to have programming in place by now to accumulate the Twitter
posts once/day and post them to the blog, but that isn't finished yet,
either.)
I'm hoping once or twice a day to find some time to post a
longer-than-140-character blog entry with photos, sound, or video to the
Nostalgic Rumblings blog at [removed] so check that out
occasionally as well. I _will_ be checking email throughout the weekend, but
expect me to be slower than normal in responding to Digest-related questions.
We'll be arriving at the hotel a little early so we can "rest up" from the
drive - remind me to tell you sometime about the first year I attended,
driving all night long to get there at 8:00am Friday [removed](*shudder*)
Anyway, should be a lot of fun. For those attending, I'll see you soon -
and hopefully, I'll be able to bring a little of the fun to the Net for those
who can't make it!
Charlie

Subject: Sir Clement Freud
Various news outlets are reporting the death of Sir Clement Freud, best known
to radio fans for his appearances on the long-running BBC radio panel game
show "Just a Minute." According to the Just a Minute blog
([removed]), he appeared for 41 and a half years
(beginning with the first show, and recording his last episode just a few
weeks ago). He was on 543 episodes (winning 230, which must be a record). (He
also appears on the cover of the Wings album "Band on the Run," standing
between Paul McCartney and Christopher Lee.)
His wonderfully dry wit was always appreciated on Just a Minute, and he will
be missed.

An answer to Ted:
Does anyone have one of those reproductions of old radios? Specifically,
Thomas brand. If so, might you have either the box it came or the original
paperwork? I am trying to find the manufacturer's website as I need a
couple replacement knobs.
Well Ted I have news for you I have a Thomas radio Model: BD 109. I got
for Christmas 1987 and we use it every day. When I saw you request I
ran to my filing cabinet and went through many appliance instruction
and document and there it was "Thomas Instruction Manual" , and that is
all it is plus the wiring diagram and other technical [removed] it shows
it was "Printed in Hongkong"
No name or address of the manufacturer. Sorry but I tried. If you want a
copy of what I have I will send it to you.

Subject: Birthday Time
One of the most delightful items on any Digester's birthday agenda is
reviewing the daily list of births posted by Ron Sayles. How
interesting it is to find out the OTR stars with whom you share your
birthday. So on my 73rd birthday, it was with great pleasure I read
that I share my April 16th birthday with Marian Jordan, Les Tremayne,
Joan Alexander, and Milton Cross.
Three of them are deceased now, according to Ron's list; only Joan
"Lois Lane" Alexander may still be with us (born 1918.) When
researching "Private Eyelashes," to cover her role in NBC's "It's
Murder," I tried to provide some recent data on her, but the only
material I could find was three decades old. In the 50s, she was an
occasional panelist on "The Name's The Same" and "To Tell The
Truth" (the latter hosted by her buddy, Bud Collyer.) She did get to
voice the role of Lois Lane in the late 60s when CBS-TV brought a
weekly Superman cartoon series to the air. But after that, she seems
to have dropped out of show-biz.
Any recent sighting of Joan?
On the other hand, Noel Neill, the Lois Lane we remember from TV, has
remained in the spotlight (both TV and movies) and continues making
personal appearances to date. This year Metropolis, IL will dedicate
a life-like statue of her in its annual Superman festival which Noel
will attend.

If you're attending the Cincinnati convention next weekend and would be
interested in a few old radios, let me know. I don't want any compensation
for them; these are free. I'm weeding my collection and have a mid-40s Zenith
console, an early-50s Philco, a couple 60s era table tops, and a couple other
odds-and-ends. These are not in great shape and would need restoration work.
Please save these from the trash and contact me if you'd like them. Hope to
hear from someone.
