Thanks to OTRBuff for the biographical info on the Bozzies. But I wish someone would tell me how
I can listen to an actual Boswell Sisters Show broadcast. I know there are lots of their
recordings available now on CD. But to hear them in the context of their own radio show is my
dream.

CORLISS ARCHER, AMERICA'S TEENAGE SWEETHEART
I find that I have the audition program of Corliss dated 11/26/42 Stars
Priscella Lyon with Irwin Lee as Dexter. The story line is that Corliss has
an"Opportunity to Christen A Ship" That's the wartime era. Corliss is about
to be 15 for 13 years (1/7/43 to 9/30/56) F. Hugh Herbert wrote a play
called "Kiss & Tell" Then to radio. A Shirley Temple movie and also on to
TV.

Corliss was mostly on CBS, but on NBC as a summer replacement for Bob Hope
and briefly on ABC. The show had no regular time or day slot. Many sponsors
like Anchor - Hocking, Campbell Soup, Electric Companies, Toni and Carter
Products

The cast, that were regulars, was Father -Fred Shields, Mother- Irene
Tedrow. Boy Friend- Sam Edwards and Best friend- Barbara Whiting.

According to one source, several years ago, there are only 15 or 16 shows
available. I found I have 4 plus the audition

Subject: Re: Barry or Barrie, Crane or Craig, and More

 Jim Widner mentioned:

I've run into this with another radio program: "Barrie Craig, Confidential
Investigator" was published in newspaper ads in its earliest shows as
"Barry CRANE, Confidential Investigator" even though
I have copies of those shows
and they very clearly are calling it CRAIG.

As I recall, that series was initially going to be called Barry CRANE,
Confidential Investigator, so it is possible that the newspapers were
acting upon press information given in advance and prior
to any changes.

At least four titles for the NBC series appear in various OTR books.
1. BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR
2. BARRY CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR
3. BARRIE CRANE, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR
4. BARRY CRANE, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR

Here are the results of further research.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Debut Title:
A September 21, 1951 New York Times article mentions "[removed] Signs
Gargan As Producer, Star Long-Term Contract Covers His Services for TV and
Radio on BARRIE CRANE Program. . ."
The article mentions the full title of the series as BARRIE CRANE,
CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR.

According the New York Times Radio listings and the Library of Congress
Sound ONline Inventory and Catalog (SONIC) database, the series debuted on
October 3, 1951 as BARRIE CRANE, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Also in Print:
The title BARRY CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR does appear in the
Radio listings of the New York Times several times between Dec 7, 1952 and
is Sep 6, 1953. In all probability it is a misprint based on type setter's
error or network printed copy error.

It Does Not appear in any paid NBC advertisements in the New York Times.

It Does Not appear in the SONIC database.

In Some OTR Books:
The title BARRY CRANE, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR Does Not appear in any
of the following sources:
paid NBC advertisements in the New York Times,
 the SONIC database,
 or
the Radio listings of the New York Times.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Most Common Title:
The Debut title lasted for less than a month before becoming BARRIE
CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR.

This is the title that appears most frequently in both the Library of
Congress SONIC database (10 of 12 records) and the New York Times Radio
listings (first listing October 17, 1951; last listing June 30, 1955.)

This is also the series title that appears in at least 3 times in Paid
NBC Program Line-Up Advertisements in the New York Times.

Other Evidence:
Gargan's 1951 contract with NBC was for 7 years with a total amount of
One Million Dollars. It gave him quite a bit of say in his starring roles.
(From his autobiography "Why Me?")

Gargan mentioned in an interview that he used first name of one of his
sons for the first name of his character in the CRAIG series. The first name
of Gargan's son: Barrie.

CONCLUSION:
While my research was not exhaustive, the preponderance of evidence is
in favor of BARRIE CRAIG, CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR.

Additional research using the period Radio Programming listings of other
major cities' newspapers agrees that the most frequently appearing title in
print (also of longest duration) for this series was BARRIE CRAIG,
CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATOR.

Signing off for now,

Stewart

Interesting if Conn was a doorman, or a "doorman."

On Broadway, and at other theatres around the country, I would imagine,
the fella, or gal, who sits at a desk, usually right inside/beside the
stage door--the person responsible for checking everyone in, taking
phone messages, making sure certain stuff gets done--

Is called a doorman.

Years ago, I felt a little sad for an acting friend I had run into, who
told me he was now a Schubert doorman. I had visions of him, in military
hat, and [removed]

Just an interesting aside:

There's a TV movie, from I think the late '70s, with Faye Dunaway, as
McPherson.

And less well known, Harlan Elllison, had some inspiration for Edith
Keeler, played by Joan Collins, in the original STAR TREK's "City on the
Edge of Forever," from what he knew, about the [removed]

Hello,

I'm interested in obtaining some air checks of Pittsburgh Pirates broadcasts
from the mid-60's, when Don Hoak was part of the broadcast team, probably on
KDKA. Does anyone have any suggestions where I might look?

A recent poster wrote about Inner Sanctum;

Was it mysteries or mystery? Who really cares? BTW, whether it was a horror
show or not, it scared the pants off those that i know that listened to it.

I know that Inner Santum Mystery(ies) scared the pants off me too!

I invite you to check out Chapter One, "The Flim-Flammed Sibling Strikes

Jack Benny, and Gangbusters. And thanks in advance for looking.

Subject: Carole Lombard

Hi Everybody,

I am finishing up a biography on Carole Lombard. It mention that she was a
big fan of listening to the radio especially her friend Jack Benny and Burns
and Allen. She did a radio interview on WGN in Chicago going back to
Indiana where she sold war bonds on 1-15-42. She was killed on 1-16-42
flying back home. The book pointed out that Jack Benny wanted Lombard for
there movie that they shot in 1941 because he needed her draw as a movie
star in order to get financial backing for the film idea. The book claimed
that Jack draw was just for radio not for his movie roles. Carole was
getting $150,000 per movie. Take care,

Walden Hughes
