This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 134
MORE FROM THE "CALL FOR MUSIC" SERIES
First, to review my brief background notes for the "Call for Music"
series please check the archives for my descriptions of episodes 131
through 133 for the last three weeks.
Songs on this "Call for Music" program of April 2, 1948, include Dinah
Shore's first song that she sang professionally. That was in Nashville
at The Pines nightclub, and the song: "Under a Blanket of Blue." Then we
hear Johnny Mercer's first song on Broadway, "Lazy Bones," and Harry
James' first public performance of a song, which happened to be on drums
when he was four years old andin a circus in Beaumont, Texas. Little
Harry beat the drums then on "Saber Dance" but now, of course, he plays
the trumpet as few can.
Johnny Mercer shares the curio pick-me-up tune "The Dickie Bird Song,"
which sings of the arrival of spring, losing the blues, and falling in
love, but the special highlight on the show is a medley of Eddie Cantor
songs, such as "Making Whoopie," "Margie," and "Ida." Eddie Cantor
himself unexpectedly appears and takes the microphone to sing one of his
signature songs, "If You Knew Susie." We can almost see him clapping his
hands as he skips around and rolls his eyes.
Dinah's closing public promo for education and teachers is appropriate
for me and my "main squeeze" of 52 years, both of us having had long
careers in teaching.

It's a 1946 piece starring Sterling, called Toward Return to Society,
produced in cooperation with the New York City Department of Correction.
RS plays a bad boy who steals, what else? a radio.

Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound ... the caped crusader

dropped from the program schedule earlier in the year, but the outrage
of youngsters brought the show back to the airwaves. Wow! The amazing
power of Kryptonite in the hands of kids! Bud Collyer, later of TV's
Beat the Clock, played Clark Kent aka Superman on the series.
