Hi all,
My friend Galen Augustus (who works at ABC) is part of a history project
regarding radio shows that were broadcast/originated from the [removed]
area back in the "good ol' days". They're particularly interested in shows
from ABC-Blue (Sunset & Vine), 1440 Highland and 1441 McCadden. If anyone out
there has any info or knows anyone that may be able to help, please contact
Galen at ABC; (323) 671-4621.

Subject: Nothing to balk over
I was disappointed by the shellacking that Alfred Balk took for his volume
"The Rise of Radio" on this forum recently. Every man is entitled to his
opinion and I defend that. It was apparent that the reviewer had checked
out of his library a text meant for in-depth study of the medium, nothing in
the lighter vein of Leonard Maltin's "The Great American Broadcast" or
Gerald Nachman's "Raised on Radio" which may have been what he was after.
Balk set out to do something altogether different and probably accomplished
it.
To researchers, historians, and those wanting more detail, I'm thinking
Balk's tome will fill the bill. The digest summary suggested there was
little new here. Perhaps not but as I read it I discovered stuff I didn't
know. It has a few factual errors which I noted in a published review.
Still, it makes a contribution to our storehouse of the aural broadcast
arena and I commend it to serious inquisitors.
None of this is to disparage anybody and that certainly isn't my intention.
I'm offering another perspective on one book. Incidentally, I don't know
Balk personally and have never communicated with him.

Subject: RE: Bogus "Hermit's Cave" episode, "Dark House"
Andrew S. asked if the HERMIT'S CAVE "episode" entitled "The Dark House" is a
re-creation.
It definitely is an OTR fan recording, most likely done in the late 60s or
early 70s (seems like it's been floating around forever), but I'm not sure
that I'd even call it a re-creation. I think it's probably an original
script, done in the format of HERMIT'S CAVE by the person who produced the
recording and who also plays all the voices in the story.
This person is identified as R. G. Scott (anybody know him?), and he also did
his own recording of Arch Oboler's "Chicken Heart." This was not a
re-creation of the complete LIGHTS OUT script (like the Gotham Players did a
few years ago) but rather of Oboler's truncated version which was done for
the 1962 LP DROP DEAD!
[removed] cleared up, except for who R. G. Scott was (or is). It'd be
interesting to know if he dabbled any further into OTR simulating beyond
these two recordings.

Folks;
A couple of things I forgot to mention. First, if you missed the
interviews on St. Patty's Day with Arthur Anderson (he of the Mercury Theatre
and Let's Pretend, among much more), I posted three of 'em to the podcast.
Just hit [removed] and scroll down a bit until you see it.
You can download, or just listen directly with the inline player. I've also
posted the latest version of the Cincy flyer/registration form supplied by
Bob with updated hotel info.
