That's it -- I should have said four CDs, not 2. Well worth acquiring at
any price -- plus the CDs themselves reproduce the original Speak-O-Phone
labels from the original discs. In terms of both content and packaging,
this is one of my favorite commerically-released OTR collections.

Subject: Hal Roach radio station?

Did Hal Roach ever run a radio station out of his Culver City studio? A
friend of mine recently heard a reminiscence to that effect and asked me
for verification, because I live in Culver City and know a lot of
obscure facts about LA in general. Nevertheless, this is a new one on
me.

Can anyone on the list confirm or debunk this story?

Cordially,

Rob Spencer

In a message dated 4/17/02 10:05:44 AM, Walden Hughes asks:

Does any one have any cast credit for Gloria Stuart for radio? I recall
she
did a Suspense, and I just book her for YUSA for this Sunday. Take care,

***66 years before she recieved an Oscar nomination for her performance as
the older Rose in James Cameron's THE TITANIC, Gloria Stuart starred in "The
Kettler Method" on the September 16, 1942 broadcast of SUSPENSE. The show is
included in Radio Spirits' STARS ON SUSPENSE 60-show collection. Gloria
Stuart also co-starred with Richard Dix and voice of Bill Forman in the first
of William Castle's WHISTLER movies.

I don't know the answer to this. However, I recall someone posting an
excellent reference of a URL here within the last couple of months relating
to the initial development & utilization of magnetic tape by Crosby and
others. Could someone repost this, I lost it and wanted to forward it to an
engineering friend of mine. In addition to being an excellent piece, it may
shed some light on this question.

Thanks,

Subject: Hal Stone's former friend

I figured that my half tongue-in-cheek comment (that in a few years the
only OTR convention "old pro" left would be Arthur Anderson) would get a
rise out of some of the other elders. But then, they'll probably thank me
for any such positive sensation.

I loved Hal Stone's response.

My hidden point re Arthur was that he was a child actor, when most of the
OTR pros were older, [removed] I suborn the obvious?

Actually, perhaps I should have said the only one left would be Bob
Hastings, who just gets younger every year. Wish I knew his secret. He's
'way older than I,. But at the rate he's going, I may adopt him as the son
I never had. Or is it "the son I wished I never had"?

Believe me, Hal (and all you others), I hope that the OTR Golden Years
Citizen population remains exactly the same (not including those of us
entering the field) for the next score years or more. Perhaps this year's
El Nino will accomplish this (or is it Nina?).

Eh?...what was it you said, Henry? Harry! HAL! Oh yes, chopped
liver! No, not at [removed]'re Prime Ribs of Beef! And keep on beefing!

Hang in there, all of you.

Lee Munsick, I hope a former former friend
(a Senior Citizen now himself, but who counts?)

in Cincy? You will certainly find me there!

Looking forward to seeing you at the convention!

I have seen a number of tantalizing references to the Amos & Andy character
"Madame
Queen" lately. On 1/15/50 Madame Queen made what has to be the greatest
entrance in radio history. She was to be a witness in Andy's trial for
divorce from Abigail Simpson Brown. Another witness had just torn Andy
apart and Willard Waterman announced Madam Queen as his next witness. The
courtroom went abuzz with surprise. (I imagine the studio audience was cued
to sound that
way.) It is announced that Madam Queen has been delayed in the outer hall by
a
crowd of reporters. The judge sends someone to break it up. Andy mentions
she used to weigh 250lbs, and what she knows will make the last witness look
like a girl scout. Kingfish says he saw her in the hall and begins to
describe her very bizarre appearance. Her entrance is delayed further while
the bailiff looks for a bigger chair. Kingfish says "There she comes. The
people are turning around" and then begins 30 seconds (an eternity in radio)
of laughter and hilarity that leaves me dumbfounded as to what the studio
audience must have been looking at. It is certain they did not see anything
they were expecting in spite of all they had just heard. And what I
saw in my minds eye was better still.

My condolences to Richard Carpenter on the loss of his father. His
memories that he shared of his Dad are precious ones and he will find
that over the next few months alot of different things will bring back
memories of his father that will be surprising to him.
I lost my father last October and I am surprised that I am still
mourning my loss as he was 89 yrs old, but he never seemed to be an old
man to me. He lived alone and was completely independent right to the
end. Two days before he entered the hospital a friend of his drove by
his place and spotted him on a 20 ft. ladder trimming his trees. "Frank!
You shouldn't be doing that" she scolded. "Thats alright , he responded,
it's a sturdy ladder!.
Like Richard's dad mine loved radio. He never owned a TV set and
listened to the radio almost continuously. My first radio memory is
listening to Charlie McCarthy with my dad and mom when I was about three
yrs. old. I also remember how excited he got telling me about this new
radio program, "Gun Smoke" which combined two of his loves Westerns and
radio.
My dads name was Frank Aust (Franz to family members). He was a retired
[removed] City Fire Dept. Captain.
Again condolences to Richard and his family.

Subject: Flufferettes

I want to thank Donna Halper for raising the Marshmallow Fluff discussion.
I immediately remembered a former coworker, originally from New Hampshire
who has lived in San Francisco for many years who talked about his love for
marshmallow fluff and lamented the fact that Marshmallow Fluff was not
available here.

I have to admit that I did not know Marshmallow Fluff. I grew up outside
NYC and if it was available there I can't figure out how I missed it. I
went to their website, read the history and became desperate to have a
peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich, which is apparently a big part
of the fluff mystique, and cult following.

Have you asked the Fluff people if they have any transcriptions?

I did find the words for the official fluffernutter song on the website of a
Boston radio personality named Steve LaVeille.

The Fluffernutter Song

Oh you need Fluff, Fluff, Fluff to make a Fluffernutter. Marshmallow Fluff
and lots of peanut butter.
First you spread, spread, spread your bread with peanut butter, add
Marshmallow Fluff and have a Fluffernutter.
When you enjoy, joy, joy your Fluff and peanut butter, you're glad you have
enough for another Fluffernutter.

The Fluffernutter is the official sandwich of The Steve LeVeille Broadcast
