Joe Mackey <joemackey108@[removed]; notes,

1938 Captain Midnight was heard on radio for the first time, on
Mutual. The Captain flew his single engine plane all over the place

The /Captain Midnight/ adventure serial was unusual for an adventure
serial running in the "Children's Hour." The show was sponsored by
Skelly Oil, whose products were aimed squarely at adult consumers. The
title character was an aviator, and the program had a significant
aviation content, with the scriptwriters World War I pilots.
One of the Skelly Oil subsidiary companies was Spartan Aircraft. Spartan
planes were mentioned from time to time on the program, and guests
included airline captains who were graduates of the subsidiary, Spartan
School of Aeronautics (which still exists).
In the Fall of 1940, the program's sponsorship was taken over by
Ovaltine, and Captain Midnight became the leader of the newly formed
Secret Squadron. The show continued under Ovaltine sponsorship through
1949. (The Ovaltine stories are preserved in my book, /Radio's Captain
Midnight: The Wartime Biography/, and Leonard Zane's /Captain Midnight's
Postwar Radio Years, both currently in print.)

Stephen Kallis, Jr.
