Subject: OTR Organists
Over the last several days, there has been some discussion about the work of
studio organists during the radio days. Over the years, I have had the
opportunity to interview three studio organists who spoke about their work.
If you care to visit my Speaking of Radio website you will find my
conversations with Rosa Rio (age 95 in 1997); Ivan Ditmars (age 84 in 1991);
and Paul Renard (age 68 in 1989).
Go to [removed] and click on "Interviews" then scroll down to
their names. I'm sure you will find their comments interesting and
enlightening.
These are among some 200 interviews we had with the stars of the Golden Age
of Radio during my 39-year broadcast career. All are available for listening
on demand, along with many additional articles and features about radio's
glory days.

CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 27: Texans Singing in the Saddle & on the Bandstand
Singing Silver Screen Cowboys
Songs of the saddle and the silver screen cowboys who sing them take the
spotlight, especially cowpoke singers from Texas like Gene Autry, Eddie
Dean, Tex Ritter, and Dusty King, And as every western movie cowpoke
dude knows, non-Texan, Roy Rogers became part Texan by marrying the
"Queen of the Cowboys," Texan Dale Evans. Songs featured include "Sing
Me a Song of the Saddle," "Deep in the Heart of Texas," "Don't Fence Me
In," "On the Banks of the Old Rio Grande," and "I've Got Spurs That
Jingle Jangle Jingle."
Texan Smith Ballew: Silver Screen Cowboy and Big Band Singer
Smith Ballew was 20th Century Fox's only singing cowboy and was the
fellow who sang on the soundtrack whenever John Wayne "sang" in the
"Singing Sandy" film series. Prior to his cowboy roles Ballew had his
own bands, starting with his 1920's jazz combos "Jimmy's Joys" and the
"Texajazzers." His popularity soon extended beyond Fort Worth and
Dallas, and he became a popular singer with bands of Ted Weems, Ben
Pollack, Hal Kemp, and Ted Fio Rioto. He formed his own successful big
band in 1929 with Glenn Miller as manager and arranger. In fact,
Ballew's band is known for having more future band leaders than any
orchestra, future leaders such as Glenn Miller, Bunny Berigan, Jack
Teagarden, Ray McKinley, and Joe Venuti. On this Classics & Curios we'll
showcase Ballew's singing on some rare recordings with bands like Ben
Pollack's, Ted Wallace & His Campus Boys, Myer Davis & His Swannee
Syncopaters, Buddy Blue & His Texans, Harry Resor's Rounders, and Milt
Shaw & His Detroiters. Songs include ""Happy Days & Lonely Nights" and
"Same Old Moon--Same Old June." In addition you'll hear a Classics &
Curios Extra with the Mills Brothers doing "Bugle Call Rag."

Subject: Jean Shepherd question
This group has, at times, worked miracles with vague recollections, so I'd
like to see what you can do with this. My dad fondly remembers listening to
Jean Shepherd. In one show, he says Shepherd asked listeners to speculate on
the possibility that in all they world they were the only person listening to
the show at that moment. Maybe everyone else had disappeared, and they didn't
know it because they were listening to the radio.
Does anyone remember a Jean Shepherd show that sounded something like this?
Sorry I don't have any more details!

Subject: Whistler episode discrepancy
So I just noticed that in my collection of the Whistler, there are two shows
that are the same recording, but Marvin Miller gives them two different
titles. The cast list and voice inflections are the same. So it's 51-10-14
as Partners In Crime, which makes sense with the plot, but I also have
51-10-28 as The Doctor's Wife. At the end of each episode, Marvin says the
next week's show will be called Man On The Run. So what went on here? Can
anyone tell?
Thanks a lot.
