Jeff Kallman of Huntington Beach, California has a very interesting old
time radio blog called Easy Ace: A Journal of Classic Radio.
He has writeups of shows and includes links to hear that show within the
writeup plus has a list of shows that can be listened to on the sidebar.
The site can be found at [removed]
This site may have been mentioned before at the Digest but deserves being
mentioned again.

I don't think I've seen this mentioned here before. According to the latest
issue of Classic Images long-time radio fan Roger Hill passed away on
February 2. Roger used to be very active in NARA (North American Radio
Archives) and also ran a nostalgia store called Nothing's New, south of San
Francisco.

Frank McGurn asked about the existence of a complete episode log for Burns &
Allen.
Frank, check the online used book stores for "George Burns And Gracie Allen:
A Bio-Bibliography" by Cynthia Clements and Sandra Weber. It has a complete
log of both the radio and television series, with as much as a full paragraph
description of many episodes to remove any ambiguity.
If you have a list of that handful of episodes that you cannot properly date,
feel free to e-mail them to me off-list, since I have probably done that
research already.

Thanks to the people that responded to my question about Paul Temple.
I have all (I think) of the dramatisations that have been played on
BBC 7 and also some of the readings. I have read that there are
several of the adventures that have been "lost" by the BBC. The
recreation of the Sullivan Mystery seems to have been an attempt to
recapture at least one of the stories and so I wondered if anyone knew
if there were plans for any others.
By the way, I am not an expert but the recreation sounds first rate
to me. The documentary I heard was how they used mono recording
methods etc to try to make it sound like an old recording. If any one
here has not heard "Paul Temple and the Sullivan Mystery" I really
reccomend it, both as a recreation and as a good mystery.
Ian, I did not know that there was an Australian production of Paul
Temple. (Takes a deep breath) Are there any recordings of the
Australian production available?
By the way as a completely seperate issue. I use hotmail which has
recently converted to a "rich text format." I got my last e-mail
returned from Charlie saying it was in html format and appeared as an
attachment. The e-mail asked me to use plain text. Does anyone that
uses hotmail know how to turn off the rich text and go back to plain
text?
Thanks a lot.
Love, David Rogers

Subject: burns and allen
frank mcgurn posted about the burns and allen radio show and the lack of good
logs available.
first off, i want to point out that there actually is an excellent,
thoroughly researched log available in the book "george burns and gracie
allen: a bio-bibliography" by cynthia clements and sandra weber. the book is
a scholarly work, not a casual read, that not only has a complete log,
including episode synopses, for the entire radio series, but also chronicles
just about every public appearance by either george or gracie, including
george's entire solo career after gracie retired in 1958, more than i would
ever have hoped for. . . the radio log alone was indispensable in verifying
dates. unfortunately, being a scholarly work, it's hard to find and
unbelievably expensive even if you can find it. amazon has the book
avaiilable for something on the order of $80. (usual disclaimer that i'm not
associated in any way with [removed], nor the authors of the book).
i also wanted to mention that the radio show was really not a sitcom at all
until the start of the 1941-42 season. prior to that, george and gracie did
not play a married couple, but rather presented variations on their
vaudeville style, which was a boy-girl flirtation act. it's rather
disconcerting to hear these pre-1941 episodes for the first time, gracie
flirting with pretty much every male character on the program except george.
. . and george's general attitude toward gracie was extreme annoyance, not
the endearingly bemused patience he displayed more and more often as the
years rolled by. (by the time they were on television, you practically NEVER
saw george get angry at gracie. he became practically unflappable.)
additionally, these pre-1941 shows were not in circulation at all until a few
years back, when a slew of "gracie for president" episodes and most of their
run for hormel spam appeared. so it's not surprising that, outside of a
research work like the bio-bibliography, practically no information is
otherwise available on burns and allen radio shows from 1932 to 1941. i
recall a while back reading somewhere on the digest that martin grams (who
posts here fairly regularly) was working on a burns and allen log, but i
haven't heard anything about it since and never found the time to try to get
in touch with him and find out more. real life interferes too often. :)
but back to your real question-- rather than try to identify the dates of the
programs you listed based on scanty program information, i'd be happy to
share the burns and allen radio shows i've managed to find over the years.
being a certified obsessive-compulsive lunatic, i've verified the dates in my
collection pretty meticulously, using the bio-bibliography as the major
source of information. i've managed to find 234 episodes, as well as a lot
of "extras" (with a great deal of help from internet friends, and a great
deal of money spent on cassettes from commercial vendors pre-internet), feel
free to drop me a line off list if you're interested.

Subject: Burns&Allen dates and Eric Blore
Frank McGurn mentioned his interest in obtaining dates for some B&A
radio shows.
May I suggest, Frank, that you try and contact the University of
Southern California Radio Archives and ask them if they have a list
of their radio shows? I do believe that USC has the most complete
collection of Burns and Allen shows in existence. I don't have the
phone numbers, email or address for the University, but you might try
411 or, on the internet, try typing in [removed] or even Google about
USC. Something will surely come up so you have some leads. Good luck,
Frank.
Eric Blore was far more versatile than most people suspect. Once he
arrived in America he found his "niche" by assuming a particular
character trait, with his facial takes, his amusing sing-song voice
and the consistent roles he assumed. He was easily identifiable from
film to film. What few people know is that, long before he came to
America, he was well known in the British Music Hall (during the
1920s) as a very funny comedian and, later, as a partner in a comedy
team. His popularity was what led him to come to America and
establish himself in films. And, because he appeared in a number of
Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers film, he will always be remembered, far
longer than other comic actors who did NOT appear opposite Astaire
and Rogers.

Subject: OTR Donations
On Friday, March 2, 2007, at 06:18 PM, Joe Riesselman wrote:
I am donating my entire collection of old radio programs on reel to

an individal reel (for tax purposes)?
It's not just the value you need to determine. IRS is really tightening
the screws on all non-cash donations after 8-17-06. You will want to
check with a good tax accountant on your options regarding this
donation. Non-cash donations claimed over $ 500 require extensive
documentation and separate tax forms. IRS has recently instituted
certain percentages which severely limit what you can claim on these
type of donations, particularly used merchandise.
Of course, you could eliminate most of this red tape if you were able
to sell your collection and give a check to your favorite charity. But
even that method is subject to certain percentages, depending on the
charity chosen.
