Subject: Lone Ranger recollection

Mr. Ross recounts listening to an episode of The Lone Ranger in which his
true last name is mentioned. This episode is "A Look To The Future" which
aired in early January, 1950 and was one of the seminal episodes in the
series. A government agent, working undercover to trap the Ace Lassiter
gang, is on hand when the Ranger is captured by the crooks. The agent is
tasked with shooting the Ranger and letting his body fall over a cliff into
a deep river gorge. They have a conversation as they walk to the appointed
spot, in which the agent reveals he knows the masked man's true identity and
the Ranger asks the agent to look after his nephew Dan Reid after he's gone.
The Ranger's first name is never mentioned, and of course, he survives the
fall when the agent purposely misses his target.
Mr. Ross is correct about the appellation "John" not being added until the
mid-sixties in Buxton and Owen's book, "The Big Broadcast". Asked later
where they got the name, they maintain they heard it from another source,
but Fran Striker was adamant during his lifetime that he never gave his
famous character a first name.

Subject: The Lone Ranger's Name

With respect to A. Joseph Ross' comments about the Lone Ranger's name,
Wikipedia includes the following comment:

"Although the Lone Ranger's last name in the radio shows was given as
Reid, his first name was never specified in any of the radio or
television shows. Various radio reference books, beginning with Radio's
Golden Age (Eastern Valley Press, 1966), give the Lone Ranger's first
name as John. Some cite the 20th anniversary radio program in 1953 as
the source of the name, but the Lone Ranger's first name is never
mentioned in that episode."
