All of the complaints about XM's OTR are valid, but the fact that this outlet
for OTR exists still matters. It matters that there is a place where people
who may not be looking for OTR might chance to stumble across it.
I love my XM, but seldom listen to the OTR channel. One long trips, I'll
check the channel at the hour and half hour to see what is on, but I don't
like to start a show in the middle. Just riding around town, I jump between
the comedy channel and various music channels. I enjoy the news, the variety
of music, major league baseball, and much more.
There is an interesting OTR connection that needs mentioning. The "clean"
comedy channel often plays sketches from OTR shows. Recently, I've heard the
Bickersons and Jack Benny (not to mention lots of Bob and Ray) on channel 151.
I think this is a great opportunity to expose more people to OTR.

1961 - Gunsmoke was broadcast for the last time on CBS. The show had
been on for nine years. It was called the first adult Western. The
star of Gunsmoke was William Conrad.
Is this right? I remember that "Have Gun Will Travel," "Gunsmoke," "Suspense," and "Yours
Truly, Johnny Dollar" were the last of the old network radio dramas (until the CBS Mystery
Theater in the 1970s), all airing in a block early Sunday evening, and I always heard that
they all went off on the same night, in November 1961, not June.
Anyone have any more information on this?

Nobody has brought up the Suspense program: "ON A COUNTRY ROAD" with Cary
Grant, Cathy Lewis, and Jeannette Nolan (as the crazy woman). It definitely
should be included in the 'scary shows survey!' "EVENING PRIMROSE (from
Escape) is definitely a good 2nd choice.

Subject: Benny pork?
Sean Dougherty writes:
The statue of Jack Benny in Waukeegan continues to be an example of
government pork used to illustrate bad government behavior there.
Am I the only one who sees the irony in the statue of a famous Jewish
American, who came from an Orthodox family, being called pork?

In doing research for my birth/death list I noticed that one Zina
Provendie died on May 15th with no notice at all in the Olde Tyme
Radio community. I have not heard of her, but she played the
character Sylvia Bruno Wick on "The Goldbergs." The big reason that I
am doing the birth/death list is to recognize the "little" people of
OTR. The personal who toiled to make OTR what it was with little or
no recognition. Zina fits that category nicely.
