In the ongoing discussion of J. D. Salinger and OTR, Jim Meadows makes the
following observation:
...I think that the adventure story told by a young scout leader to his
troops about "The Laughing Man" in the story of the same name (also in "Nine
Stories") would make a dandy OTR kids adventure serial.
Yes, it would make a dandy adventure serial. In fact, it already had. I
remember when I initially read the story years ago, my first thought was,
"Hey, he's lifting this straight out of the old Pearl White movie serial THE

Bob Bailey
I just finished watching "The Lineup" - a 1957 movie based on the radio and
TV show of the same name. About 30 minutes into the film, I heard the
unmistakable voice of Bob Bailey. He has an effective 7-minute scene as
Staples in which he looks like one would imagine that Johnny Dollar might
look. Jaime del Valle was the producer of the movie as well as the radio and
TV show.
After checking on the Internet, I found the movie on You Tube. The Bailey
scene is in part 4.

1924 John Joseph Carty of the Bell Telephone System spoke in Chicago,
IL. His speech was carried across the nation on the first coast to coast
radio hookup. An estimated 50 million people heard the speech.
2/11
1940 NBC presented The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street for
the first time. The famous Blue network series included several
distinguished alumni among them, Dinah Shore and Zero Mostel. The
chairman, or host, of The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street
was Milton Cross. He would say things like, "A Bostonian looks like he's
smelling something. A New Yorker looks like he's found it." The show
combined satire, blues and jazz and was built around what were called
the three B's of music: Barrelhouse, Boogie Woogie and Blues.
2/12
1924 Calvin Coolidge, known by many as the 'Silent Cal', made the
first presidential political speech on radio. The speech originated from
New York City and was broadcast on five radio stations. Some five
million people tuned in to hear the President speak.
1924 The Eveready Hour became radio's first sponsored network program.
The National Carbon Company took the honor of being the first sponsor of
a network show.
1940 Mutual presented the first broadcast of Superman. The identity of
the man from planet Krypton was actually that of Bud Collyer.
1956- Wild Bill Hickok (and Jingles) rode off into the sunset on Mutual
for the last time, having been on radio since 27 May 1951.
2/13
1939 Virginia Payne, already popular as the voice of Ma Perkins, took
on a new character in NBC's soap opera, The Carters of Elm Street.
Virginia played the part of Mrs. Carter.
1943 Frank Sinatra made his debut as vocalist on radio's Your Hit
Parade this night. Frankie had left the Tommy Dorsey Band just four
months prior to beginning the radio program. He was described as,
"...the biggest name in the business."

Subject: Houston, Texas request
I was wondering if someone on the Digest lives within a short driving
distance of the Houston Public Library. They have a newspaper on microfilm
that needs review on a certain number of dates. I had inquired with their
library staff to look up what I need related to a radio program, however,
their replies strongly suggest they either don't care about old-time radio or
don't care to humor me by looking up a few radio listings and news brief. I
would be willing to reimburse anyone who can take an afternoon and do a
little researching for me, inquire off the digest. Thanks!

Subject: Chico Marx Orchestra
Chico Marx did have an orchestra around 1942-43 and apparently they
did do some recording. There's a compilation album available at Amazon
called "Something For The Boys" that contains a track of American
Patrol by the Chico Marx Orchestra. The track can be briefly previewed
at no cost in mp3 at Amazon. Some biographies of jazz greats Barney
Kessel and Mel Torme indicate that they both made their first
recordings with the Chico Marx Orchestra.

I've been listening to large group of Jungle Jim shows lately, and was
wondering if there's a Jungle Jim expert lurking on the Digest. Correct me
if I'm wrong, but it surely sounds like Gale Gordon is part of the cast.
Actually, it sounds like Gale Gordon is most of the cast of "other"
characters. I hear him one minute as the villain and then the next minute
he's a government agent or someone in the background. I wouldn't be
surprised if in some scenes he's "talking to himself." I guess you can get
away with this on a weekly 12 minute serial, but it becomes quite a bit
disconcerting when listening to episodes one right after the next. Am I
hearing things, or can anyone confirm my observations?
