...I recently came across two scripts that have thte nearly identical story
line, but are from widely divergent shows. The first is the September 7,
1952 episode of Hollywood Star Playhouse that was called "The Tenth Planet."
The second is an undated episode of Roy Rogers called "Missing Atomic
Scientist." Anyone have any idea which broadcast came first? And why are
these stories so identical? I know many stories were repeated on different
programs ([removed] The Thing on the Fourble Board.) But at least they used the
same title and same basic script. But the two shows I listed have just
enough differences that you could not call them identical. Just "nearly"
identical.

Subject: Sam Spade Scripts & June Foray

For any interested parties, Bear Manor Media just published two new books.
([removed])

June Foray's autobiography will be available in the next week or two. She
played character roles
on numerous radio programs including SUSPENSE, and supplied cartoons voices
like Rocky and Natasha on
the BULLWINKLE SHOW.

Ben's company has also published a new book about Sam Spade -- rather, 13
scripts for "lost" episodes
of the forties. Since many of the recordings are not known to exist, this is
the next best way to
enjoy the adventures. The book has an edge over any ol' script book. They are
13 of the best "lost"
episodes.

The premiere episode of the series, broadcast Sept. 29, 1946.
"The Jane Doe Caper" (May 29, 1949) reveals an emotional side of Sam not
usually explored on the series.
"The Judas Caper" (April 11, 1948) has Sam hiding a female murderer in his
apartment so the police cannot question her. Sam knows she is guilty, but at
the risk of losing Effie and his friendship with the police,
he keeps her hidden solely because he enjoys her [removed] company.
"Inside Story of Kid Spade" (Feb. 16, 1947) reveals Sam's past as a
prize-fighter before he decided to
take up the occupation of private detective.
"The Caper Concerning The Thing" (Dec. 22, 1950) is a holiday offering and
the ONLY episode from the
Steve Dunne season that doesn't exist in recorded form.
Others are just plain fun, great in-jokes, one-liners and reveal the best of
what the series has yet to
offer should the "lost" episodes ever surface one day.

 From Those Were The Days

1934 The first appointments to the newly created Federal
Communications Commission were made. The governing body of the American
broadcasting industry was first served by seven men named as commissioners.

1946 The Adventures of Sam Spade was heard on ABC for the first time.

7/14

1957 Funnyman Stan Freberg debuted a new weekly comedy program on CBS
beginning this night. The Freberg show only lasted a short time and that
newfangled contraption, television, was blamed for the shows quick demise.

7/16

1934 NBC Red network premiered the musical drama, Dreams Come True. It
was a show about baritone singer Barry McKinley and his novelist
sweetheart.

7/18

1936 The critically acclaimed, experimental theatre of the air, The
Columbia Workshop, debuted on CBS.

Subject: 100 years of radio in SF Bay Area

This is an item from the July 12 SF Chronicle, Sunday Datebook Section, page
34 from Ben Fong-Torres' weekly column 'Radio Waves'. It might be of
interest to other list members in this group who live in or near the Bay
Area.

"History buffs alert: The California Historical Radio Society's annual
fundraiser on Saturday [July 18], joins in the celebration of 100 years of
broadcasting in the Bay Area. 'Live at KRE' takes place at the historic KRE
building at 601 Ashby in Berkeley, from 10 [removed] to 2 [removed] The Broadcast
Legends will perform the 1945 radio play, 'The KQW Story,' which tells how
Charles 'Doc' Herrold became the first radio broadcaster on a station in San
Jose in 1909. That station evolved into KCBS. Other entertainment includes
the Hot House Swing Band, an auction of vintage electronics, and tours of
the Art Deco KRE building. MC is the aforementioned Carter B. Smith, whose
radio career began at KRE. Admission is $5; children free. For more info
contact Steve Kushman at kushseal@[removed] "

Actually, the OTR group's name is 'The Broadcast Legends Old Time Radio
Players' made up of members of 'The Broadcast Legends' association, They
perform in front of vintage microphones with live sound effects and are
available for outside bookings.

All the 'Broadcast Legends' members are veterans of broadcasting in the Bay
Area. Willard Waterman was an early member of the group which was formed in
the 1990's. He was living in Burlingame when he died in 1995.
