A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: A remarkable achievement

Here is something that really impressed me. You know how there's been a
discussion on how to make old time radio more accessible to today's audience?
Here is one way.

A guy took a Christmas episode of My Favorite Husband, used a computer
animation program, and created a cartoon version of the show. Here is the
link to youtube. [removed]

There are three parts to the episode. Apparently it took him several months
to complete the whole thing.

Now I guess I'll have to sell everything I own, go back to school to learn
how to do this, just so I can devote the rest of my life to "cartoonifying"
all of the Jack Benny programs. Let's see, Benny started in 1932 and ran
through 1955 - that's 932 episodes, which would take a little over 200 years
for me to do. Hmm, maybe I should skip the first few years and start with the
Jello series.

Subject: The Sportsman Quartet

David Van Nostrand asked the "names of who made up the Sportsman Quartet
from the Jack Benny Show."

I found the following information from Tom Wagner, who posted it on the
Jack [removed] website in 2002.

"The Sportsmen "officially" joined The Benny show in Sept. 1946. They
stayed through (at least) 1963. They made several appearances before
becoming regulars. They were Jack's Lawyer's in January 1942 episode of
The Frightwig Murder Case. They sang the "Yhtapmys" jingles. They sang
"That's for Me" with Larry Stevens on January 6, 1946.

The members when they became regulars were Bill Days (top tenor), Max
Smith (2nd tenor), Marty Sperzel (baritone), and Gurney Bell (bass).
Contrary to popular stories, John Rarig (baritone) did not sing with the
group on the show (when they were regulars). He stopped singing in 1943
and stayed as their arranger. Thurl Ravenscroft was the original bass of
the group and left for the war in 1942. He came back in 1948, made a few
appearances and ended up being booted from the group. He left with Max
Smith and they formed The Mellomen.

According Bill Days, who passed away on May 6, 2002 at 91, Mahlon
Merrick was the one who got them into the show. He had worked on some
recordings with them and suggested to Jack that they be hired.

They were also featured on The Judy Canova show, Eddie Cantor show,
Sealtest Village Store, Ginny Simms show, Blue Ribbon Town with Groucho
Marx, Phil Harris/Alice Faye show among others."

Subject: Ronald Reagan

In the latest issue of "Nostalgia Digest", Autumn 2011, it tells of
Ronald Reagan being elected to the "Radio Hall of Fame." That has to
beg the question, why? His radio work was minimal and what little he
did do was of a pedestrian nature. Certainly not Hall of Fame
standards. It is quite obvious he was elected because he was a
president, while more deserving stars such as Parley Baer, Harry
Bartell and Larry Dobkin are not in the "Radio Hall of Fame." I am
sure that most of you can come up with a list of people who deserve to
be in the "Radio Hall of Fame" more than someone who is there just
because he is an ex-president.

Of course, you remember the Quiz Kids.

I have a contract with McFarland Publishing to write a history of the
program, and I'm about halfway finished. But I need your help.

Do you have any materials pertaining to the program? If so, I'd like to see
them. I'm looking for photos, preferably 8x10 glossies, suitable for
reproduction), correspondence between the production office and the Kids or
anyone else (Treasury Department, Alka-Seltzer, NBC, etc.).

Do you have any ETs or CDs of the broadcasts? I already have about 120 of the
broadcasts, but there are big gaps between 1941 and 1948.

Finally, do you know any of the Kids, with their current addresses, phone
numbers, email, [removed] Or do you know any of the production staff?

If you want to talk, I'll be on the Thursday evening OTR chat. Or, you can
send me an email: magardner@[removed]
