Brian Johnson chyronop@[removed] wrote:

Ron Sayles assertions that Ronald Reagan's role in radio was pedestrian
and therefore undeserving of a Hall of Fame nod is demonstrates little
knowledge of the role radio played in getting Reagan the Presidency. . .

Furthermore, it was President Reagan who, in 1982, introduced the concept
of the weekly Presidential Radio Address that has been continued by all four
of his successors. And whether one agrees or disagrees with his policies and
politics, Reagan's appointment of Mark Fowler as Chairman of the FCC and
his insistence on backing the Chairman's elimination of the Fairness
Doctrine may well have saved AM radio as a viable medium.

I worked for the Voice of America from 1978 until 2006; during the Reagan
presidency we had our first modernization program since the mid-1950s,
including gutting and rebuilding the original 19 studios, new central
recording and master control facilities, and modernization and addition of
transmitter sites, and satellite transmission of programs to those sites.

Not to get too political, I disagreed with most of what he did during
his presidency, but he was good for VOA.

1938 [removed] Kaltenborn made broadcasting history by covering a crisis in
Czechoslovakia for CBS beginning on this day. Kaltenborn was so devoted
to his work that he slept in the studio for 18 days while bringing
updates to his appreciative audience.

9/13

1931 Vaudeville star Eddie Cantor was heard for the first time on
NBC. The Chase and Sanborn Hour became one of the most popular radio
shows of the 1930s.

1937 The first broadcast of Kitty Keene, Inc. was heard on the NBC Red
network.

9/14

1936 NBC presented John's Other Wife for the first time. Actually,
John's other wife was not his wife at all. She was his secretary.

9/15

1934 NBC presented The Gibson Family to American audiences. The
program was the first musical comedy drama to be broadcast. Ernest
Whitman and Eddie Green were featured members of the cast and were
billed as "network radio's only colored comedians." The show originated
from the studios of WEAF in New York City.

Subject: "It was animation, I know"

It's nice that someone is attempting to use the audio from various OTR
programmes such as "My Favorite Husband" and converting them into animated
forms. Years ago, a fellow named Jim Davison, a regular FOTR attendee,
likewise ventured into this territory with a company he started called
"Radiotoons" with which he sought out funding so as to "cartoonify," to use
an erstwhile term used recently on the Digest, episodes of "Jack Benny."

Jan Bach also raises some good points by arguing that converting OTR showes
into a visual form effectively removes an elementt of imagination. To
illustrate this, I surely hope my pal and fellow Digest-er Dan Hughes will
forgive me if I appropriate one of his favourite stories.

Many attendees of the Cincinnati Old Time Radio & Nostalgia Convention know
Dan and his wonderful family, particularly his daughetr Karen. A good number
of us have literally seen young Karen grow up in the hobby. It seems Dan and
his wife Kathy ingrained Karen since about the age of three with an
appreciation for OTR. Karen's biggest passion that continues to this day is
the aforementioned Jack Benny.

When Karen was around the age of five (please correct me if I'm wrong, Dan),
her parents found at a dollar store a video-tape of some public domain
episodes of the Burns and Allen TELEVISION show. Karen had been listening
George and Gracie since age three and this would be her first opportunity to
see them in the flesh.

When Burns and Allen came on the screen, Karen started to cry. When Dan and
Kathy asked her why the fuss, she whimpered "They don't look that way!"

Yours always in the ether,

Subject: "Lum and Abner" comic strip updates

We were pleased to sign with "The Saline Courier" in Benton, Arkansas. This
newspaper will begin publishing "Lum and Abner" in color on Sunday, September
11, 2011.

That being the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9-11, the current
strip (and audio version) at http://firstarkansasnews/lum-and-abner will
feature a one-panel tribute to both 9-11 and Pearl Harbor (which will
celebrate its 70th anniversary this year). The audio version offers some
vintage sound bites.

The web page for "Lum and Abner" has a new look, with easy-to-find buttons
linking the reader to our Facebook page and other locations such as our
Sponsors page, where we're pleased to say Ben Ohmart of Bearmanor Media has
become one of our sponsors.

Finally, "Lum and Abner" has been added to a section of the online comic
strip service, GoComicsSherpa. Currently it is listed in their "New Strips"
section but should be among the complete list soon. I invite those interested
to visit here and give it a look and feel free to leave feedback. You may
need to register with them, if you choose to do so, but you can arrange to
have "Lum and Abner" e-mailed to you if you wish.

The current debate over animating OTR brings to mind some charming
interstitial programming I used to see on public television station WITF in
Hershey, PA many many years ago ... it was old-time radio played by radios
... one radio was Fibber McGee, one was Molly, one was Gildersleeve, etc.
Does anyone else remember this, or was it exclusive to that station?

[ADMINISTRIVIA: ITF has been out of Harrisburg, PA for a whole lot of years
[removed] many of my reel recordings, like the Hitchhiker's Guide and Star
Wars, still carry the Hershey call-signs. And yeah, I remember those OTR
twix-and-tweeners on the TV station. But then, I remember Mike Greenwald's

Subject: The Old Time Radio Club (of western NY)

John Olsen inquired of the status of this club as their web site
appears to be down and emails to club official, Jerry Collins, have
resulted in no response.

I contacted a good buddy in that club, Dick Olday, who assures me his
club is still alive and well. They have had some problems with the
web site and it is now "under construction" by their webmaster. They
hope to have it running again soon.

As for Jerry Collins, his email was highjacked and some of us got his
"urgent appeal from London" where he supposedly lost his wallet and
passport. None of that appeal was true, however the hacking has
caused some obvious problems with his email service.

Their " Illustrated Press" does not publish in either July or August
but their September issue is in the mail now. So all is well in
