Subject: WOTW and Travel From Mars
The discussion of time compression seems to be focusing in on the time
involved from when the explosions were first sighted on Mars until the
time the Martian cylinder landed at Grovers Mills, NJ. A point being
that the spacecraft were described as projectiles, and with even current
technology, most of an interplanetary mission has the spacecraft
coasting, using purely ballistic influences.
Avoiding an in-depth discussion of orbital mechanics, which would bore
most to tears, such an event would take a long time: the path using a
minimum expenditure of energy, called a Hohmann orbit, would take roughly
9 months Mars to Earth or vice versa. When H. G. Wells wrote the
original story, a "Space Gun" seemed the only way to go between planets,
and that was adapted for the Mercury Theater production.
The only part of the WOTW broadcast that "scared America" was the section
that took place after the "landing," and according to what I've heard(I
was alive, but not yet listening to radio back then) and read, those who
got scared tuned in late to the show, for the most part.
For a show presented as occurring in real time, WOTW probably had the
most significant time compression. Other shows, for the most part, had
any time bridge explained by a bridge, usually narration.

Hi: I read about your wondering about Cathy & Elliot Lewis. You I
believe had the right idea but the wrong name of the program. I think
you want "On Stage" It was their program from 1/1/53 until 9/30/54 and
there were 78 programs. Using the DUNNING BOOK [OLD EDITION 1976 ]
PAGE 446, AND THE 1998 EDITION PAGE 512.
Eliot Lewis had a busy career appearing in 1172 programs and Cathy on
423 . I guess he had a good income.
Hope I've been of help,
Frank McGurn
