Subject: CBS blacklist
Here's an interesting article that reproduces the official CBS "do not hire"
list from the 1950s.
[removed]
The first category on the list is Producers and Directors, and the first name
on the list is Hi Brown. (Norman Corwin is on the next line.) At the bottom
of the page, they justify Brown's exclusion on the grounds that "Inner
Sanctum regularly uses pro-Communists." (I read Martin Grams' book on Inner
Sanctum, and I don't remember that being mentioned!)
I recognize a number of other radio regulars on the list as well.
The article links to a 1999 NYT article on the subject, with quotes from
Corwin among others.
Cheers,
Kermyt

I would not consider the BUCK ROGERS series a time travel story. The origin of
Buck Rogers, the premiere broadcast, wouldn't be considered a time travel
since he himself never "traveled." Buck was put into suspended animation which
is considered by die-hard sci-fi buffs as a medical procedure to slow down the
heart rate and other physical functions to: One, perform medical procedures
such as heart surgery and Two, for long-term interplanetary travel ([removed]
Planet of the Apes). Some fish are capable of being frozen and re-animated
after appearing lifeless for a few days in a block of ice. There have been
debates regarding whether suspended animation would be considered time travel,
but since they cannot go backward in time and are in constant presense in what
sci-fi buffs call time perception.
We cannot rule out BRICK BRADFORD, as Jim Burns suggested, but to my
knowledge, the comic strip of the forties was never adapted for radio drama.
If someone could find evidence of such a program, that would be new news for
OTR researchers.
THE TIME MACHINE, [removed] Wells' novel, was never done on THE MERCURY THEATER
program, but it was adapted for ESCAPE (May 9, 1948). Time travel stories were
done on anthologies, most notably DIMENSION X and X MINUS ONE, but I don't
know of any particular radio program that dealt with time travel as a premise
or subplot.
FAVORITE STORY, MAYOR OF THE TOWN, CAMPBELL PLAYHOUSE and others did an
adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which is considered a time travel story.
ESCAPE also featured "Present Tense" (Jan. 31, 1950) and SUSPENSE also
performed the same script. ESCAPE also featured "The Man Who Could Work
Miracles," another [removed] Wells story and while the premise doesn't have
anything to do with time travel, time travel is certainly the option used to
solve the chaos.
SUSPENSE offered "The Thirty-Second of December" (Dec. 28, 1958) about a man
with a watch that allows him to travel back and forth through time. "Time on
My Hands" (Sept. 25, 1960) concerned a couple who travel back in time to try
to assassinate Adolph Hitler, which was also dramatized previous on THE
MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER. "The Man Who Went Back to Save Lincoln" also done on both
series, again someone tries to prevent a major historical calamity.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater offered plenty of time travel stories, too many to
mention.
Ray Bradbury's "To The Future" was done on DIMENSION X (May 27, 1950) and
"Time and Time Again" (July 12, 1951) was an interesting time travel story. X
MINUS ONE featured "A Gun For Dinosaur" (March 7, 1956), "Project Mastodon"
(June 5, 1956), [removed] Gold's "The Old Die Rich" (July 17, 1956), "Target One"
(Dec. 26, 1957), and my personal favorite is "The Discovery of Morneal
Hathaway" (4/17/57) and that one comes recommended.
Oh, I would consider It's A Wonderful Life" a time travel story but that might

1948 NBC presented the Horace Heidt Youth Opportunity Program for the
first time. The talent show earned Dick Contino, an accordionist, the
$5,000 prize as the program's first national winner. Over the years
Heidt gave some big stars their big starts: Art Carney, Frankie Carle,
Gordon MacRae, the King Sisters, Alvino Rey, Ken Berry, Frank DeVol,
Dick Contino, Al Hirt, Fred Lowrey, Ronnie Kemper, Larry Cotton, Donna
and her Don Juans, Ollie O'Toole and many others.
1952 My Little Margie, starring Gale Storm and Charles Farrell, made
its debut on CBS. The TV version of the popular show had begun on June

1944 The Chesterfield Supper Club debuted on NBC. Perry Como, Jo
Stafford and many other stars of the day shared the spotlight on the 15
minute show that aired five nights a week. The show was sponsored by
Chesterfield cigarettes.
(Little humour here: The first display of the Northern Lights was
recorded in America. The sighting was made in New England on this day in
1719. The report said that a mysterious face seemed to appear in the
atmosphere; and, since most aurora borealis displays occur in September
and October and again in March and April, this is very strange, indeed!
The green, red, and frost white light displays occur most frequently
when there is a great deal of sunspot activity.
Old joke. Phil Harris and Alice Faye go to Alaska to see the Northern
Lights. While watching them Phil notices Alice yawning and asks, "Does
the aurora bore ya Alice?")

From Those Were The Days
1937 The Federal Communications Commission was a bit upset with NBC.
The FCC scolded the radio network for a skit that starred Mae West. The
satirical routine was based on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve and,
well, it got a bit out of hand. So, following its scolding by the FCC,
NBC banned Miss West from its airwaves for 15 years. Even the mere
mention of her name on NBC was a no no.

Subject: To Be Sure - to be sure
Hi Gang
Several issues ago someone asked about a recurring catch phrase, "To Be
Sure, To Be Sure". To date, nobody seems to have come up with any credible
answer as to where it was used in Old Time Radio. Perhaps the line in
question comes from the old ARRID Deoderant commercial. The singers in the
commercial sing to the tune of the "Song of the Volga Boatmen": DON'T BE
HALF
SAFE, DON'T BE HALF SAFE, DON'T BE HALF SAFE, USE ARRID TO BE SURE - Then
the announcer or some actor repeats "To Be Sure". This might be the answer
to the question - or Maybe Not.
