Jim Burns pointed out that Soule was "replaced" as Batman by Adam West for
the final series of SUPERFRIENDS ("SUPER POWERS") cartoons.
However, Soule =did= continue on the series as a regular even after that,
voicing half of the Firestorm character (Martin Stein). So, even after he
gave up the cape, he was =still= as super as ever. <g>

"The Illustrated Press," from the OTR Club of Western NY, has been
running a series of articles on radio broadcast admission tickets, all
written by Rick Payne. These articles have been lavishly illustrated
with dozens of such tickets, apparently from Payne's collection.
I suggest you contact the editor, Ken Krug, <AnteakEar@[removed]; who

Subject: Eric Blore
In response to Kenneth Clarke's inquiry about actor Eric Blore, yes Mr.
Blore was British and specialized in films where he played the leading
man's comic valet or butler where he brandished a decidedly sarcastic
view of his boss's activities. His trademark was a "slow burn" in
reaction to vexing events around him. He is best remembered for his
supporting roles in Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers films such as Top Hat
(1935), Swing Time (1936), and Shall We Dance (1937). Laurel and Hardy
fans may remember him from the team's 1938 film, Swiss Miss. In the
1940s Blore had a continuing role in the "Lone Wolf" film series, among
many others. In the 1950s, he played valet to Peter Lawford in a
short-lived "Thin Man" TV series. He died in 1959. I can't say that I've
run into much of him on OTR but others will be more knowledgeable than
me on that point.

that Superman would put his Clark Kent cloths in his cape. I guess it
had a zipper pocket.

Subject: Clear channel memories
WGN Clear channel radio from Chicago 720 on the dial. Now they
state that the station is heard in 38 states.
WSM regularly issued printed materials in which it signified it could be
heard "in 38 states and Canada." I guess if you were in Juarez you were
simply outta luck.
One of my best memories of being in studio audiences was to observe those
distinguished WSM interlocutors as they stepped up to the plate -- er,
mike -- at the close of some portion of a live show (there were many) and to
hear them state in deep mellifluous tones almost robotically, without
script:
"Clear channel ... 650 ... WSM ... The broadcasting service of the National
Life and Accident Insurance Company ... Nashville, Tennessee" (and if it was
the Opry they were subdividing into half-hour or quarter-hour segments,
they'd add) ... "Now bringing you the world famous Grand Ole Opry from the
stage of Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville."
In local radio, it seemed there were few voices that (to me) could equal Jud
Collins, T. Tommy Cutrer, Grant Turner and others of their ilk. They were
masters of their craft.
Nashville then -- and still today -- boasts a phenomenon in broadcasting
that I've never quite figured out. Perhaps one of you know the answer.
While numerous cities its size can point to no clear channel radio outlet,
Nashville maintains two 50,000-watt stations, WSM (the ex-NBC affiliate) and
WLAC (the ex-CBS affiliate, which was coincidentally operated by a life and
accident underwriter, Life & Casualty Insurance Company).
Not sure what this portends but a few stations in larger Southern
metropolitan markets (Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, San Antonio) manifest but
one 50,000-watt clear channel while several cities equal to or larger than
Nashville appear to have none including Memphis, Miami, Tampa, Houston.
(Data based on current FCC reports.) Were those latter cities too small
possibly when the clear channels were assigned eons ago? Was Nashville
considerably more influential than, say, Atlanta at the time? There's
surely a logical explanation.

Mr. Clarke asked about shows with Eric Blore and Frances Langford. Eric
Blore was a regular on the FRANK MORGAN show from 1944 and I have 3 in which
he appears. He was also on SUSPENSE once, 7/20/43. Francis Langford was on
radio a lot. She was one of Bob Hope's people and had her own show one
summer. Besides those and the ones Mr. Clarke mentions, I have her on
Command Performance, Lux,
Screen Guild, Spike Jones, Songs By Sinatra and
Texaco Star Theatre. Always mix her up with Ginny Simms who was very
similar.

To my fellow OTR friends and family,
I am absolutely shattered by this devastating
news. Hal Stone was simply one of the finest men I
have ever met. I looked forward every year to seeing
Hal at FOTR, and being greeted with a warm handshake

fascinating(and usually hilarious)tales from his many
years in show business. To think I won't have that
opportunity again is too much to bear right now.
My thoughts and prayers are with Hal's family

you find some measure of comfort in knowing the joy
Hal brought to so many during his lifetime.
I love you Hal, and I'll miss you. Rest well,

stories of his TV news experiences from the early days, and listened

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your friend, Hal.
I never had the pleasure of meeting him, face to [removed], my loss,
but thanks to his writings on the digest, I felt as if I knew him. His
contributions to the digest were always written with a touch of humor and
presented so as not to offend anyone. I recall reading his last posting,
and how he mentioned, he wouldn't be able to correspond for awhile, because
he
was going to have a valve replaced but it was not a big deal and
he'd be as good as new and back in no time. At the time, I thought, what a
great attitude. Now, he's gone.
I honestly had shivers, and felt such a deep personal loss, when I read your
somber words of his passing.
To be so moved by a person, I never met, speaks volumes about how much the
man was loved and appreciated, by so many, including complete strangers, such
as myself. I'm sure many other Digest readers feel the same way.
Please know, that on this Ash Wednesday evening, and the beginning of Lent,
we will offer prayers for this wonderful man and also for you, your daughter
and other family members. Take care, Charlie.
All my best and God Bless

Hi Everybody,
I will miss Hal Stone very much. I had two meals with him back at the 1999

After buying his book Hal called me up long distance and with one hand
