Subject: Re: Commecials Clipped from AFRS Rebroadcasts
I've heard AFRS re-broadcasts of Fibber McGee and Molly programs from the
Johnson Wax years in which the only thing missing from the Glo-Coat
commercial is a direct reference to the actual product. The rest of the
integrated commercial remains intact, as a pithy (if essentially
pointless) little talk on house cleaning.
But the question I've long had is why AFRS didn't run the commercials.
An AFRS rebroadcast of a 1950s Jack Benny I just heard treated Don Wilson's
midddle commercial the same way. Almost everything is there, down to "so
round, so firm, so fully packed,"--Don is ordering a hot dog--but with
mention of Lucky Strike itself deleted, there's really no reason for the bit
to have been included in the show. It's just an odd, pointless conversation
between Don and a hot dog vendor.
My understanding is that the Armed Forces Radio Service deleted commercials
because it simply wasn't thought proper to give the impression that the
United States government was endorsing commercial products. Considering only
the technical complexities involved in editing on disc, life would probably
have been much less stressful for AFRS recording engineers if the shows have
been rebroadcast intact.

Subject: The Magic Radio/Cimmaron Rolls
The version you have is the 25th Anniversary Special. By the time tghey
dusted off the idea and presented "The Golden Days Of radio" Marion ("Molly")
had long ssince left us. So if she is indeed on it, you have the network
anniversary special.
And one thing left of the Cinnamon Rolls/Cimmaron Rolls discusssion is that
at the time the flub was made, there was a western out called "Cimmaron."
This could've been part of the reason for the flub.

LIVE on stage this week!
Dear Folks-
Just a quick personal invite, especially to those who have thought, "I
should make it there, some [removed]" to the Friends of Old Time Radio
convention in
Newark this weekend.
It's been an honor and a blessing I've had for several years now, working at
mic with the thinning ranks of the veterans of Network-Era Radio Drama like
Arthur Anderson, Bob Hastings, and Art Gilmore, as well as still-working pros
like Simon ("Arthur Dent") Jones, Bill Owen, and Chuck McCann.
Thanks to the kindness of several directors, this year I'm doing recreations
including Peter ("Speedracer") Fernandez' SUSPENSE; Ray Bradbury's "Mars is
Heaven," from X-1; and "Mr. Boynton" in OUR MISS BROOKS.
It's great fun, and the performers - old, and new! - are about the most
accessible there of those at any such Con!
Best,
-Craig

Two early TV pioneers died this week. Edie Adams was 81, and Jack Narz
was 85.
Jack Narz was the host of Dotto, the first fixed TV quiz show (or at
least the first one that was exposed).
>From the NY Times obit:
"In 1951, Mr. Narz narrated the opening episode of "Superman." At the end
of the show, with his voice crescendoing, he said, "Join us every week
for the adventures of Superman!" He was paid $150.
Almost every year thereafter he received a residual royalty check of

Question for the audience:
I recently introduced a Spanish speaking friend to OTR, in particular,
Suspense
and Superman.
He asked me if any of these shows appeared in Spanish; his father is
disabled, his English is not too good and thi would be a great present for
him. I said I would find out.
Possibly they would be available at the FOTR in Newark this week.
Any ideas?

real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!
