From Those Were The Days
11/22
1906 Delegates attending the Berlin Radiotelegraphic Conference in
Germany voted to use SOS (... . ...) as the letters for the new
international signal. The international use of "SOS" was ratified in
1908. Its meaning? No, not "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls" as many
believe. Its only meaning was as a distress signal, quick to transmit by
Morse code and not easily misread. It is not an acronym. Incidentally,
how did SOS pads come to use the same initials? They're named after a
patented process, Soap on Steel.
11/23
1929 Shirley Booth and Ed Gardner were married on this day. Miss Booth
was famous for her television acting role ("Hazel"); but we remember
when she and her husband played Miss Duffy and Archie on Duffy's Tavern.
1958 One of the last drama programs on radio debuted. It was unusual
in that it followed the TV show of the same name. Have Gun Will Travel
was broadcast on CBS and starred John Dehner as Paladin.
11/24
1937 Music from the Raymor Ballroom in Boston, Massachusetts was
beamed coast to coast on NBC. The special guests during this broadcast
were Glenn Miller and his orchestra.
11/25
1920 The first play by play coverage of a football game was broadcast
by WTAW in College Station, TX. Texas University beat the Aggies of
Texas A&M, 7 3.
1944 CBS presented The FBI in Peace and War for the first time. It
became one of the longest running crime shows on radio lasting 14 years.
1945 A spoof of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic, [removed] Pinafore, was
broadcast on The Fred Allen Show. The spoof was titled, The Brooklyn
Pinafore. Joining actress Shirley Booth in the skit was baseball great
Leo 'The Lip' Durocher.
1960 Radio actors were put out of work when CBS axed five serials
(soap operas) from the airwaves. We said so long to The Second Mrs.
Burton (after 14 years), Young Doctor Malone, Whispering Streets (after
8 years), Right to Happiness (after 21 years) and Ma Perkins (after 27
wonderful years.) In 1940, the high point for these radio programs,
there were as many as 45 on the air each day!
11/26
1945 The program, Bride and Groom, debuted on the NBC Blue network. It
is estimated that 1,000 newly wed couples were interviewed on the
program before it left the airwaves in 1950.
11/27
1930 Broadcasting from "...the little theatre off Times Square,"
according to the shows introduction, The First Nighter was first heard.
The program, which actually originated from Chicago, then from
Hollywood, aired for 23 years and featured dramas and comedies.
11/28
1932 Groucho Marx performed on radio for the first time.

Most OTR researchers and historians know that much of the personal
information appeared in the broadcast magazines and radio pages in
the Golden Age of Radio was not even close to the truth. A small army
of public relations people (either paid by the network, the sponsor,
or in some cases, the star) had the continuing task of getting the
performers' names "in the news."
It was easier to dispense material they had made up on the spot than
actually provide the facts, plus it made for more interesting reading
in the papers and magazines.
Case in point: Here's a short bit from 1933 I recently came across in
a San Francisco paper:
"RELATED TO LONE EAGLE: Arlene Francis, comediene on the Al Pearce
afternoon NBC broadcast, is married to a cousin of Colonel Lindbergh,
Dr. Harry G. Harris of Los Angeles. Arlene was born in Toronto,
Canada and finished her education in England."
Other than Arlene did appear on the Al Pearce show, virtually
everything else in this news blip is a lie. She was born in Boston,
MA on 10-20-07 (although she would keep moving that date forward to
conceal her true age.) She never attended school in England; she did
attend a private "finishing school" in Manhattan called Finch's
School. I don't know whether Harry Harris was related to Lindbergh,
but he was not married to Arlene. Her first marriage was to Neil
Agnew in 1935, whom she divorced in 1945, and next married Martin
Gable in 1946.

***Mike Biel seems to think someone did an edited version to "mess with our
heads"; others seem to think it might be something else.***
Could it be a years-later syndication edit? Old TV reruns are notorious for
being chopped up for extra commercial time. Maybe a radio station rerunning
the broadcast, made cuts here and there--thinking of dramatic pauses as
nothing more than "dead air"--to squeeze in commercials or news on the hour,
or a local announcer reminding everyone it's just a play? I have heard at
least one cut of WOTW that ran 51 minutes and I didn't notice any speedup or
missing scenes.

Subject: WoW #2, some impressions
I'm listening to the "#2" version of the WoW broadcast from [removed]
blog. Thanks to Jerry for forwarding the link to me.
In the first few minutes, I can hear that the surface noise is the same,
but there's quite a bit of editing going on - the musical passages are
shortened, pauses that Welles does in the intro are shortened, and the
sound seems to be faded in and out to take out the discs surface noise in
between phrases of speech.
How very strange - why in the world would anyone bother?
But wait - this does sound familiar .... I think I've figured out where
this may have came [removed]
I seem to recall, deep from the recesses of my brain, hearing WoW on some
documentary or movie that was edited this way.
Was this prepared for use on a movie or tv production where characters
were listening to the show? That would make sense - the director might
have wanted to give the impression of listening to the "live" broadcast,
trying to eliminate as much of the surface noise as possible and to take
out "dead" air or "flubs" that would have been distracting.
So that's my new theory - it's from some documentary or movie. Editing
the music would make sense in this situation, since the director or editor
would have been trying to match narration or scenes with actors to timing
of the WoW show or vice versa.
Anyone have a copy of Ken Burns's "Empire of the Airwaves" or that tv
movie about the WoW broadcast to compare? Are there other movies or tv
shows where WoW has been used?
