Greetings [removed]
Some of you know Jay Hickerson through the years, and in my case, for more
than 45 years. It was his monthly newsletter, Hello Again, that got me going
in the hobby in the mid-1970s and I was so grateful he welcomed me to be on
the FOTR convention committees through the early 1980s.
Less than 10 years ago, Jay had a fall and managed his way through the
difficulties back to recover. Now, however, he has new medical challenges.
He recently had a very severe and dangerous medical incident that is not yet
resolved.
Some of his expenses are starting to require out-of-pocket payment now, and
when they do, they are big. At his age and because of the nature of his
problems, he can go back and forth from hospital to home to rehab and back
again in matters of days. If some of you have gone through this with parents
or others, you know that you start getting bill after bill from physicians
and services you never heard of and it's never quite clear what insurance
covers and when and the doctor and hospital invoices and insurance payments
never seem to arrive in a timely manner or be sync'd in a way that's easy to
track.
The confusion of these things can be a great stress on families and
caregivers. Karen has been through quite the roller coaster of physicians,
tests, diagnoses, and [removed] and there have been times when it seemed he
would not make it through another day. There are positive signs that the
situation is improving, but there is still much more to go.
Martin Grams has started a GoFundMe page to raise $4400 toward Jay's medical
costs. The page is at

it details many of the cascade of challenges that Jay and Karen have been
facing in these last few weeks.
I have made an anonymous donation to the cause, and I ask you to consider
doing so as well. Any amount, even a small one, is extraordinarily helpful in
reaching or exceeding the goal.
Thank you very much. OTRdom exists in the way it does because of the generous
efforts Jay did for us many years ago.
Best and kindest regards to all
Joe W

1923 A great improvement in radio receivers was advertised. The new
models had a concealed speaker and eliminated the need for headphones,
which were considered a nuisance because they were so heavy to wear and
messed up hairdos. The new radios were also said to have a 'foolproof'
design.
Darned if I know what they meant by a "foolproof" design, but my father
once told me of a makeshift speaker that his family used. They would put
the earphones in a wooden bowl, and that amplified the sound of the
earphones enough so that they could all sit around the table and listen.
