Does anyone out there possibly have recordings of the classical music
appreciation series that Willson did for a limited period in the
fifties? It was on NBC, I think.

Subject: The Castles
"The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle" (1939) was the
last of nine Astaire-Rogers pics at RKO. V&I Castle
were a ballroom dance couple famous in the early part
of the 20th Century. Vernon was killed during WWI
performing his duties as a flight instructor, so the
ending of the picture was hardly your typical A&R live
happily ever after affair.
In 1948 Astaire and Judy Garland teamed up brilliantly
in "Easter Parade" and MGM wanted a quick encore.
Production began on the "Barkleys of Broadway" for
release in 1949. By this time Judy was becoming more
unreliable and had to be replaced. Ginger was brought
in to replace her and the only Astaire-Rogers movie in
Technicolor featured the only number they ever
performed to twice, George and Ira Gershwin's "They
Can't Take That Away From Me." It was written for the
couple in 1937's "Shall We Dance" and Astaire felt
they had never done justice to it the first time around.

Subject: Re: Jerry Coleman
Brian Johnson commented on ex Baseball player Jerry Coleman's nomination to
the Radio Hall of Fame. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
During my many years as a Commercial TV Director, I had the opportunity to
work with a great many sports "Celebrities" over the years. Primarily those
from Football, Baseball, Basketball.
Many were cooperative, and easy to work with. Some (very few) were downright
obnoxious. Some (more than a few) were decent individuals, and made for a
pleasant and interesting experience.
But of the 50 or so big name athletes I directed, Jerry Coleman stands out
as being the nicest "gentleman" of them all. He was one of the earliest
Sports Celebrities I directed, and over the years, he was the "Benchmark"
that I used for comparison against all those that followed. As for warmth of
personality, total cooperation and enthusiasm (for trying to do the best job
possible), and basically, making my job so easy, Jerry Coleman heads the
list.

Robert is now home. Just talked to him, and recovery will
take some time. He
might be at the Saturday night dinner
if the hotel has a wheel chair. I'll
make sure they do just
in case he can come.
