Candy Jens, speaking of how we used to listen to OTR, mentioned,
I'm surprised no one mentioned my favorite way to listen, when a show
was on past my bedtime."
Well, I worked up a system whereby I had a crystal set hooked up to my
bedsprings (antenna) and radiator (ground). After I dutifully went to
bed, if there was something I really wanted to hear, I could.
Since my mother made my bed, I suspect that she had an inkling about my
illicit listening habits.

Lee Munsick, attempting to help Bill Knowlton, only swallows another
OTR canard. Regarding Tony Wons using "Are you listenin'?" as a tag
line, Lee assures us:
"I checked the font of all OTR knowledge (well, nearly), John Dunning's
book, and see no such reference. But I learned his real name was
Anthony Snow!"
Turns out Lee is 0 for 2 this inning.
Tony Wons not only used this tag line repeatedly on his various radio
series, but one of them was named "Are You Listenin'?" As for the fairy
tale that he changed his name from "Snow" to "Wons", this myth fooled
not only John Dunning, but our own Elizabeth McLeod. And it simply
tain't so.
One of Tony's relatives, an amateur historian, Joyce Wans, has proven
conclusively that this fanciful transposition of his surname is pure
balderdash. You can read her factual explanation in RADIO RECALL, "Say
It Isn't Snow" by going to our web site at:

Subject: Cornell Woolrich again
This was a subject I pursued a couple of years ago, but as many of you
know my hard drive crashed since then so I lost everything I had,
including the old posts from this list. Also, I know there is a way to
look at the archives but have never done it. My long-term project is
going to be to find and put together all Cornell Woolrich shows I can
find. I remember somebody had sent to the list a list of the shows that
he wrote, under all his pen names, and if somebody has that list I would
really be appreciative if they could send it to me off list. Francis
Nevins might have printed it, I don't remember, but I would like to find
as many shows as I can that he wrote, or were taken from his stories. By
the way, I have found a very interesting piece of information. It seems
that there was a suspense, as I remember, done twice, called You'll Never
See Me Again in 1943 or 1944, the exact dates aren't really important
right now, but supposedly the novel called that was published in 1951 or
1952, but I don't know if it was the same story. Anyway, I am sorry to
impose on anybody, but any help on this subject would be appreciated.
Thank you very much. Kurt

Subject: Re: kids on trips
I find the commercials for Radio Spirits not only to be an interference
to the programming but nothing short of assinine.'Buy a whole bunch of Red
Ryder or the Lone Ranger and keep your grandchildren occupied on a long
trip!!!' Not a chance in this day and age with DVD players and high tech
games. Grandchildren wouldn't want too many trips with the old folks with
a continual diet of 'imagination theatre'
I don't have grandkids, but I do have younger relatives and children of
friends whom I will occasionally spend a couple of hours at a time in a car
with, and I beg to differ. OTR has always been a huge hit in these cases.
I don't think they'd listen at other times, but they like it under those
circumstances. I'm not the biggest fan of Radio Spirits, but they're
completely correct when they say that OTR is great for everyone in the
family.

for Lee Munsick: Could your "There's Gonna Be A Great Day" be "Grand Slam"
with Irene Beasley? It followed the Godfrey morning show and was a CBS
network show.
BTW, in looking over 1920s copies of the "Jackson Heights News" I've
discovered that he once lived down the block from me in that Queens suburb;
of course a decade before I was born (Jackson Heights had lots of radio folks
in its population back then).
As far as radio warmups are concerned, there were also wonderful visual bits
on the Grand Ole Opry that caused huge seas of laughter that WSM never
described to the audience. Naturally it caused a reaction of "we've GOTTA go
to that show!!"
I recall a 1955 visit to the Opry and seeing the Royal Crown Cola portion
closed out with several members of Roy Acuff's Smoky Mountain Boys hauling
member Oswald across the stage as the curtain was falling, opening the lid
and stuffing him into a soda cooler with his legs flailing about. This
happened every week and the radio listeners only heard a roar of laughter
while the announcer had to shout the final credits.

Cincinnati based on a recent sale of station.
Say it ain't [removed]
It sounds like the national shows will dominate and the local (OTR
Included) will be paired down or eliminated.
The disappointing thing about this is they (WVXU) just had their
fundraising week in which people donated money to keep these shows on the
air. The article in the Cincinnati Enquirer made it sound like Dr. King
knew the station would be sold. Rather than prepare the paperwork to sell
the station, He went back to teaching.
I find the timing a bit suspicious. Immediately after a fundraising to
keep the shows on the air, announce that the station is sold, smacks of
impropriety to me. In all fairness, the changes in programing should not
take place until the summer.

Subject: radio logs
Mike asked about sources for radio [removed]
The two best sources for compiling radio logs or episode guides are the
scripts (TONS can be found on microfilm at the Library of Congress), and
periodicals that offered reviews such as VARIETY magazine (just one of many
examples). VARIETY printed thousands of reviews of radio broadcasts and
common sense dictates that what they reviewed is far more accurate because
they described what was definiately broadcast. Plus . . . reviews in
VARIETY listed cast, writer, director, broadcast date, title of drama, brief
summary of plot, and on occassion, trivia such as an error observed while
listening to the drama, or cast changes, production details, etc.
Sources for creating accurate radio logs vary from one radio program to
another, naturally, but the application of common sense is needed when doing
so. Too many people out there prefer to be the next person to recreate
someone else's work and change accurate info to inaccurate, blinded with the
excitement of being the next author/researcher to break some new mold, or
worse, borrowing someone else work (including OTR dealer catalogs) and
claiming it as their own. Need the fella in California who came across half
a dozen radio scripts for SUSPENSE and claimed they were scripts to "lost"
SUSPENSE recoridngs, confusing many people until a handful of people
observed the scripts themselves and realized they were scripts rejected by
the sponsor, and therefore were never broadcast in the first place.
It's not adviseable to compile logs from radio guides or newspapers because
those periodicals listed only what was PLANNED to be broadcast and scheduled
productions and cast changed frequently. Listing what was PLANNED rather
than listing what was broadcast are two different ballgames.
A man in Canada once did a log of SUSPENSE from the NY Times a few years ago
and compared to definitive sources, one out of every three titles and guest
stars was inaccurate. When his log came out, the periodical received quite
a large number of letters from readers who noticed the errors and the source
for the log became known.

Subject: Arthur Anderson on the Radio (This Week!)
Old time radio actor Arthur Anderson's sideline as spokes-elf for Lucky
Charms cereal has landed him several radio interviews this week, in which he
will be doing his classic "Lucky" character as well as talking about his
broader carreer.
The calls came in so fast and furious today I didn't get full information on
all of them but hopefully there is enough here so that those in areas where
these stations broadcast can listen for the interviews.
Arthur, for those who don't know him and I'm sure there aren't many, is a
mainstay of Friends of Old Time Radio in Newark as well as other conventions
around the country, is a veteran of the Mercury Theater with Orson Welles,
wrote the book on "Let's Pretend" and so on.
Here's a rundown of his pending activity in order of when they called me to
schedule (all times Eastern):
WDRC - Hartford - 6:40 [removed] on St. Patrick's Day (time approximate, interview
will be pre-recorded). Mike Stevens Show.
WOCM Maryland - 9:00 [removed] on March 17.
"Big Dog Radio [removed]" - Grand Forks North Dakota, 10:15 [removed] EST, with Pat
Mars on March 17. Giving away "Let's Pretend" books.
WMAY, Springfield, IL - 2:00 [removed] EST on March 15. John Molson of the Molson
& Lee show.
Kitty Dawn of 1055 MMM Radio in Madison, Wisc. Pre-recorded five-minute
interview today. Will probably air on St. Patrick's day during the Jonathan
& Kitty in the Morning program. Exact time TBD.
Mix [removed] San Jose - Bill & Marla Morning Show. KEZR-FM. 8-10 minutes.
Pre-taped on March 16 to air on March 17. Exact time TBD.
WLW Cincinatti - 5:40 [removed] on March 15. Gary Burbank Radio Show.
720-AM Atlanta. March 15, beginning at 7:30 [removed] Benji Sheppard of the
Uncle Rick and Benji show.
KFRC San Francisco - 610 AM. 9:30 [removed] EST. Cammy & Dean Morning Show, 5-10
minute segment.
KFIZ - Milwaukee. 11:10 EST on March 24 with Joe Schiebinger of Backstage
program.
Arthur is going to be a busy leprechaun this week. Let us digesters know if
you happen to catch any of his appearances!
Also be on the lookout for an article on [removed] by Buck Wolfe on St.
Patrick's Day. Arthur was interviewed for the story but we don't know if his
comments will be used.
Best,
