This one should be the correct one. Sorry about that:

Subject: News in WWII
I hope someone on this forum has some expertise in broadcast news technology
and procedures during the war. I know that transmitting long distances
required the short wave ionosphere "bounce." So, here are my questions:
Let's say one of the Murrow boys, oh, say Bill Downs, is off in North Africa
(or wherever) "embedded" (though they didn't say that then) with a military
unit, and he wants to report a story. Here's what he has to do, after writing
it. He has to contact his superiors in London to let them know that IS a
story. He has to find a short wave transmitter so he can SEND the story (did
they carry them around?). And he has to know--to the second--WHEN to send the
story so that it would air live on the newscast. Because presumably it is
being led into from New York, right? And he can't hear the lead-in.
Okay, how did Mr. Downs carry out each of those steps? What about the guy
who's reporting on, say, the battle of Midway?
If there is some obscure article or book chapter somewhere that I'm not aware
of that would give me more detailed information, I'd appreciate that, too.
Alan

Subject: A "new" old radio show
I don't like to promote my blog very often, but I've a new, previously
unheard series I'm running for the next few months.
It's rather obscure, so I'm hoping other otr enthusiasts with more
knowledge of early syndicated shows or access to more familiarity with
early radio publications might be able to dig up some more information on
the program or the company that syndicated it.
The show is "The Police Reporter", a quarter hour program of true crime.
The show was pressed on heavy shellac discs and is probably from the early
to mid-30s. It was produced by a company called Radio Release, Limited.
I've posted three episodes so far and will run through all twenty-six over
the coming months. You can find them all here:

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has always been impressed by this
man's crystal clear voice and smoothly crafted articulation. Plus, he
never came across as synthetic, or contriving to talk in a manner only
intended for effect. He was a good listener to people of all ages,
not only children, and this contributed to his success, too. Others
would model themselves after him, while he, as the old saying has it,
was the original.
A memory while listening to him live, and talking to an audience
member while looking through her purse. The woman made an anti-
Semitic reference. There was hardly a laugh, but a stunned silence.
Yet, it lasted only about two seconds and it was time for the host to
react. Art Linkletter was marvelous, responding instantly to express
his disappointment that such a thing should be spoken, apologizing to
his audience, and telling the woman directly how he regretted having
brought her to his microphone. Good man.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative

I'd like to ask about the relationship between Lt Weston and "The
Shadow". Is it just me or did the type relationship they shared seem
to change over the years? In the earlier eps of the show, Lt. Weston
seemed to appreciate the assistance he received from "The Shadow" and
Margo. In later eps however, (when the role was played by another actor)
he seemed to resent their assistance and the relationship (at least from
Weston's point of view) was more adversarial. Whenever Shadow said he
was planning to help, the lieutenant would send some of his police officers
to catch not only the crook, but a glimpse of the mysterious Shadow as
well.
The earlier Weston was more accepting of the Shadow's mysterious
ways and seemed happy to just close the case on which he was working
no matter what it took. Why did this relationship change? Was it just
the new actors interpretation of the character?
As always,
Kenneth
