Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!

A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over six years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Ivan commented:
In e-mail correspondence, Martin Grams, Jr. once related an experience he
had at one of the OTR conventions in which a couple of individuals came by
his table, picked up his book on INNER SANCTUM, thumbed through it and then
dismissed it with "all I need is an episode guide and I can get that off the
web." In my opinion, that is very, VERY wrong-for me, learning about the
history of these great programs provides the necessary fuel for my lifelong
passion of The Hobby; it should, then, come as no surprise that whenever
someone publishes a book that traces the origins and background of these
series that I feast on it voraciously like buzzards on carrion.

Ivan is correct. Anyone with an [removed] higher than room temperature can tell
the difference between a 4 page web-site and a 400 page book. Episode
guides are nice, but when it comes to quality and quantity, a book is more
valuable. Some web-sites are great, I wasn't debunking anyone's work. But
as I've seen and could point out in dozens of web-sites, anyone can post
anything up on the web without much thought or further work to it, but a
400-page book means it's been cross-refenced and researched in detail.

I don't think I've been to a radio convention in the past two years that
didn't have someone comment that they could get the same info off the
internet - how little do they know. Example: this past weekend at the Cincy
Con a fella had a printout of a log of INFORMATION PLEASE broadcasts he got
from Haendiges (sp?) web-site. The log only goes to February 1945 (not the
1950s when the show ended), has many blanks and missing guests, mis-spelled
names (tons of those) and numbered the episodes wrong. Yet the site clearly
says "Complete Log." This same man picked up the INFORMATION PLEASE book I
wrote for BearManor Media, which features an honest to goodness complete
episode guide with accurate episode numbers, all the guests (no blanks
there), correct spellings, and goes all the way to the 1950s up to the final
broadcast. The man did raise his eyebrows a few times browsing the episode
guide, and chuckled at a few passages in the book while he was reading. I
pointed out the differences (because he asked what the difference was
between his printout and my book), even pointing out that the book features
a history of the series, insight to lawsuits from listeners, fan mail
reprinted, humorous stories from behind the microphone (such as which
recurring guest author was asked not to return to the program when they
correctly answered a question labeling Agatha Christie's mystery novel as
"Ten Little Niggers" (the correct British title) instead of the American
release known as "Ten Little Indians"), and so on.

Afterwhich, the man commented that he'd prefer his rinky-dink printout,
claiming he's never had to buy a book about OTR in his entire life. This is
his loss, not mine. Ben Ohmart and I have had this discussion a few times
in the past - whether it's worth paying the hundreds (and many times
thousands) of dollars just in research fees, permission fees, let alone
printing bills hoping to get reimbursed for our time and trouble . . . but
if this is shape of things to come . . . the future of OTR research . . . I
wonder who will be around to research OTR in the coming years?

Jell-o again --

If people keep saying nice things about me in the OTR Digest, perhaps I will
be included in the list of those born on April 21, as I was. Happy birthday
to me.

I have just finished proofing "It's That Time Again -- Vol. 2" for which I was
the story editor, and contributed two stories. Also represented are such
names as Jack French, Martin Grams, Jon Swartz and many others familiar to
these columns. Also some new from larger literary circles --
Richard A. Lupoff, Michael Kurland, William Nolan -- award-winning science
fiction, mystery and non-fiction authors.
Bobb Lines did a wonderful cover featuring Tom Mix, Jimmie Allen, Jack Benny,
Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, more.
I think all of you will enjoy it. A Ben Ohmart publication.
Also I just got the cover of my first solo science fiction collection,
"Harmon's Galaxy" featuring some new stories, and some going back quite a few
years. Radio fans will come across some stories that will remind them of
broadcast favorites.

An additional flaw with this thinking is that if everyone just got the
episode guides from the web (which are often stolen from books like this
anyway) is that you're keeping the researcher from having the funds to
continue writing other books. Most of those online logs are innacurate at
best, and if they aren't, they were probably illegally stolen from the
copyrighted work of the researcher who's book you won't buy. Contrary to the
belief of some, people who write books about OTR are anything but rich.

It's a sore subject with me, and I felt the need to chip in my two cents.

Hope this is not too off topic. I am looking for the 1950s & 1960's Doo Wop or

Subject: Hashknife Hartley

Does anybody have any information on Hashknife
Hartley, based on the books by WC Tuttle? A friend of
mine read the books and listened to the show when he
was a kid. Dunning has only a paragraph on the show,
and RadioGoldIndex lists two shows, so there are at
least that many in circulation. Does anybody have any
episodes to trade or to sell? This is for a colleague
of mine. He's thirty years older than me, old enough
to have listened to these shows firsthand, but
sometimes he thinks he's going crazy because nobody
else seems to recall them. For years he thought he'd
made up memories of Jimmy Stewart starring in a
Western series, until I gave him every episode of The
Six Shooter last week.

Thanks in advance,
Kermyt

Reaction? Yes -- BOO! Don't waste your money.

I got one for Christmas, could not get it to work on my computer.

So, took it back to the store, got my money and found a Rio Volt CD player
that does a wonderful job with MP3 files at Sam's Club for less than $40.

Subject: Phantom of Crestwood

I was watching tonight a video to DVD that I bought from Fred Berney at the
Cincy Con. It is an RKO Radio film that Leonard Maltin called a "first rate
whodunit." Anyway, the show opens with a radio announcer talking about a
contest that was on NBC radio held during the run of a radio version called
"Phantom of Crestwood." Listeners were told to write in with the solution
to the whodunit on the radio version with prizes to be awarded. The catch
was that the solution would be given in the film that I purchased from
Satellite Video. It was kind of a neat idea and I wondered if the radio
show actually happened.

Sure enough Jay Hickerson lists a short run from 1932 over NBC. The film
was also released that same year after the show went off.

Anyway, my question is whether there is any information around this radio
program. It appears no copies exist, but I was wondering if this was just
an independent short run radio program or part of something bigger that NBC
regular did. No sponsor seemed to be involved, though I suspect so unless
the sponsor was RKO itself and this is an early concept of using one medium
to promote another similar to what Blair Witch did and now others have
since picked up by having tie in web sites (not just one's advertising
their film, but more interactive as the Blair Witch web site was before the
film was released.).

Anyway, inquiring minds want to know, so if anyone has a clue, I'd love to
hear it.
