I noticed the name of Meredith Willson on one of the recent
birth/death lists. His name sounds very familiar to me for some reason.
Is he the same person who wrote the music for the musical "The Music
Man"? I could be mistaken.

As always,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Don't worry Mark

In digest #150, Mark Kinsler wrote:

that there was some solemn edict
that any recordings were to be destroyed immediately after the
broadcast, and that re-runs were an artifact of decadent
television.

Don't worry Mark, my snark meter is well-tuned, and I got your point
(and consider it valid). Evidently, a few other readers missed it.

I am very sorry to report to long term Los Angeles listeners on
the death of legendary KMPC disc jockey Ira Cook has passed away
on May 15, 2007 at age 90. Ira was what I would call a signature
announcer on the famous erstwhile station, 710 on the AM dial.
Sorry, I do not have his birthdate.

Subject: Kermyt Anderson and radio voices

Kermyt Anderson a while back was musing on hearing the voices of radio
actors when reading novels.

A prime example of this is Evan's Green's DUST AND GLORY (first published by
Pan Macmillan, Sydney, 1990). In this novel about a car rally across the
Australian outback in the 1950s, Green includes the real-life radio
personality Jack Davey. And, being just old enough to remember when Jack
Davey was a star, I could actually hear his voice in my head every time the
character in the novel spoke.

It was a little uncanny -- but certainly added to the story's realism.

Subject: Recycling music

I was just listening to YTJD ... The Empty Threat Matter. Johnny goes to
Tahiti (I hope that I spelled that correctly) and during his description of
the area there is background music that I would swear is the theme from "The
Six Shooter".

Anyone know if this was a common practice ... recycle themes from other
shows that were no longer on the air?

Subject: Re-runs, Remakes, and Repeats

The discussion of Jack Benny re-runs could lead to some confusion.
There are three types of program duplication. I refer to them as
re-runs, remakes, and repeats.
A re-run is a rebroadcast, using some sort of recording, of the
original show. 'The Lone Ranger', 'Jack Benny', and 'Richard Diamond' all
received this treatment by the networks. The bridges (commercials, public
interest spots, etc.) differed. AFRS re-runs of network shows are the most
common examples of this approach.
Remakes were broadcasts repeating an earlier script (often abridged or
altered in some way) using the same or similar casts. 'Gunsmoke',
'Suspense', and 'Escape' often broadcast remakes.
Repeats were rebroadcasts of the same show on the same day with the
same cast for the West Coast or syndication. There were slight changes in
intonation, etc., but often one has to listen closely for differences. I
have examples of 'Suspense', 'Jack Benny', and 'Lone Ranger' (for
syndication), shows that were repeated.
If I've left anything out, or contributed to the confusion, I welcome
corrections.

Subject: second half hour of drama on MBS in 1957 and 1958

May 23, 2007

Dear Old Time Radio Digest readers:

While reading back issues, I saw a posting about the
Mutual Broadcasting System and its programming.
While I was vary young in the late 1950s I remember
MBS aired one hour of drama five Nights a week. I
remember the first half hour of drama, on Monday True
detective Mysteries Tuesday Treasury agent Wednesday
Gang Busters Thursday secrets of Scotland Yard Friday
Counter Spy.

I cannot remember what the second half hour of drama
was at 8:30 Monday through Friday. Did MBS air drama
on Saturday and Sunday in 1957 and 1958?

Many Thanks

Jim Taylor
