My late Uncle Tumble Weed (Bob Baker) sang on the National Barn Dance in
the

in the
30's-40's before becoming a lawman/saddle maker/leather tooler in

Sealtest Ice Cream is still available, as far as I know, in Western New York
state, around Buffalo. It's a really creamy, tasty, quality product. I'm not
sure if it's distributed anywhere else. I live in Virginia, and haven't seen
it for sale here.

Ed Rogers asked about Sealtest ice cream. The company

Sealtest label is still in use); and their plant in
Framingham, Massachusetts is bordered by Sealtest

wants me to pursue the question, I'll find out if
there are any Sealtest products still being marketed.

Subject: Hearing old time radio for the first time --
again!
While traveling recently, I experienced one of those unanticipated,
serendipitous moments. The car radio was playing and as the top of the hour
came around, suddenly -- for the first time in years -- I heard the familiar
chirps followed by the infamous instrumental ditty signaling the start of
CBS News on the Hour. While this won't seem like much to most of you, I
hail from a city of more than a million denizens who have been deprived of
this hourly privilege throughout this century -- a network programming form
that dates back to the 1950s and which we took for granted.
Spinning along on a backwoods two-lane rural road in north Georgia, from an
unidentified affiliate in Ellijay I again heard that wonderful sound (almost
as welcome as Monitor's multifreq beeps, but not quite). I devoured every
word as host newscaster Christopher Glenn reeled off the hour's top
headlines with wire reports from correspondents Barry Bagnato and Mark
Knoller. They and their colleagues (Bob Fuss, John Hartge, Lou Miliano, Dan
Raviv, Frank Settipani, et al.) are the modern electronic journalistic
successors to a durable and highly professional line of dependable stalwarts
that included CBS newsmen Douglas Edwards, Allan Jackson, Edward R. Murrow,
Lowell Thomas, Robert Trout and several branded as "Murrow's Boys" (Cecil
Brown, Winston Burdett, Charles Collingwood, Bill Downs, Richard C.
Hottelet, Larry LeSueur, Eric Sevareid, William L. Shirer, Howard K. Smith
and a few others). More than any other organization, they established news
on radio and made it imperative to listeners, according to several scholarly
radio historians.
Having been banished from that tradition for years, it was a delight to hear
those live reports once more. It's sad that so many major metropolises have
no connection with a national commercial radio chain any more. When those
pithy newscasts evaporate one day, the last vestiges of live radio we recall
from the golden age truly will be a thing of the past.

My buddy Ted Meland inquires:
Does anyone know of OTR stars, musicians, etc. who were from Arizona?
Well, it's probably a stretch but the Flying Crown Ranch was at Grover,
Ariz. Is that a mythical place or for real? Rancher-aviator Schuyler King
wasn't for real but you couldn't have convinced me in 1947.
Didn't Hugh Downs have Chicago radio connections before "Hawkins Falls" on
NBC-TV in the early 1950s? I believe he's retired somewhere around
Scottsdale but unsure.
On the other hand, Ted said he was looking for stars. While his galaxy has
diminished (and his halo tarnished), there's Hal Stone. (I couldn't resist,
pal Hal!) He's invariably good for a few laughs.

Occassionally I am called on by various groups who are very hard up for
entertainment to talk on OTR. Trivial stuff--things that audiences seem to
like to hear.
One thing I would like to include in such discussions is connections to the
state of Arizona, where I am located.
Does anyone know of OTR stars, musicians, etc. who were from Arizona? (SNIP)
One very important OTR actress was raised in Jerome, a quaint Northern
Arizona mining town built on the side of Mingus Mountain. Her [removed]
Rosemary DeCamp. From what I was told, her father was the mine foreman
there. She is probably best known (among the OTR crowd) for playing the
nurse on Dr, Christian. Following her Radio career, Rosemary went on to
perform in films and TV shows. Perhaps best known as the Sister on the
Robert Cummings Show. She appeared in about 23 films and 37 TV shows.

I've been wondering about Sealtest myself as it was a familiar brand
growing up - remember the wax cartons with the little hole with the
flap on the side for pouring? - or, before that, the glass bottles
with the little round paper disc stopping them, with the cream
floating beneath (V forVitamins, V for Victory)? - how one's thoughts
meander when you reach a certain age - but it then disappeared from
the Knoxville Market for decades. It is now back in local stores. I
imagine it is a national brand that contracts with local dairies. Of
course, I could do a search on Alta Vista, but then I'd miss some of
the fun of reminiscing.

edrog@[removed] asked about "Seal Test ice cream". A little research
showed the correct spelling for the brand is "Sealtest". If we do a Google
search for various phrases like "Sealtest sponsor" we'll find bunches of
sites that mention the company with its old time radio and television
shows, etc.
I remember it as the sponsor of a circus show on television when I was a
kid in Baltimore, Maryland. I live in California now and it's not
advertised here. I don't know if it's still around on the east coast.
I also found that Sealtest Variety Theater is available for free download

By the way, I found this auction site which has many pictures of old

A feud? Pshaw! Just two friends from across a wide gulf who enjoy zinging

Roos, Rabbits and radio for company. I Grieve for him. :)
And the hot dry spell he's experiencing sometimes causes him to hallucinate.

The current programs will be available until at least Monday,

35. February, 1973 - Henry Hull, radio, stage and motion
picture actor who appeared in "The Pit and the Pendulum,"
one of the very first "Suspense" dramas.
36. March, 1973 - Jackson Beck, actor and announcer, who
appeared in countless radio shows during radio's golden era.
37. April, 1973 - Mason Adams, actor, best known for his
portrayal of Pepper in "Pepper Young's Family." Mr. Adams
went on to a very successful career in commercials ("with a
name like Smucker's . . .") and television.
In the 1970's Dick Bertel created the program for WTIC in
Hartford, CT. The idea came to Dick after he interviewed radio
collector-historian Ed Corcoran a few times on his radio and
TV shows. "The Golden Age of Radio was first broadcast in
April, 1970; Ed was Dick's co-host.
For the next seven years the program featured interviews with
actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians from radio's
early days. Each show featured excerpts from Ed's collection.
"WTIC's Golden Age of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights
on Walden Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

I don't know how large an area was served by Sealtest, but I grew up in South
Carolina and there was a plant near our house. In fact, the plant included a
public ice cream parlor. One time my father took my little brother and me to
this parlor. This was very unusual, since my dad never took us anywhere.
Anyway, there on the wall was a strange box with Hopalong Cassidy being
shown. I looked around for a movie projector, but saw none. My dad explained
this was something called television. I was about 10 years old and spent the
next several months trying to find out how this Sealtest Dairy managed to get
pictures from the electrical outlet, when I could only get sound. We finally
got a TV a few months later. I learned quickly that I preferred radio.
As far as I know, Sealtest still exists, although it's been awhile since I
actually saw the product.
