Dear Folks-
I won't presume to have known Mrs. Clute as well as some of the other folks
on this list, and in the greater world of OTR; but I can say that I always
found her wearing a smile at FOTR. Thanks be to God, there are always several
"Bright Lights" there, and she was one of the brightest!
And, as a sometime radio producer, I want to second the statements that have
been made about her professionalism. She and Ed were indeed a Team, and one
that gave you a feeling of real security as a "backstop" when you were at the
mic as an actor.
She'll be much missed this October.
With prayers for her rest, and for Ed's consolation,
-Craig Wichman

The first two episodes I heard both feature an older female secretary,

Could this be the stalwart Miss Lemon? If so, she appears as a character in
a number of the Christie Poirot novels. A no-nonsense type.

Subject: "Cold Equations"
In addition to the 1955 radio show and the 1996 TV movie, "Cold
Equations" was also done as a 1989 episode of TWILIGHT ZONE. Tom
Godwin's short story has been reprinted in more than 20 anthologies and
collections since it was first published in ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION
(August 1954).
Godwin's obvious source was a story titled "A Weighty Decision" in the
EC comic book WEIRD SCIENCE (May-June 1952). In the EC original,
illustrated by Wally Wood, three men are on a spaceship headed for the
moon, but a young woman in love with one of the men is a stowaway,
meaning the extra weight will make a return to Earth impossible. Since
all three men are essential to the flight, the woman goes through the
airlock into space.

Subject: 12" transcription discs of OTR shows
Maybe Elizabeth can answer this question.
Several months ago I came across on e-bay 12 inch vinyl transcription
discs for 4 different programs. I purchased three of them and when they
arrived I was quite surprised to find that the entire program including
commercials were on each disc. These discs are exactly like the 12"
vinyl records that became so popular after the war.
One of the discs gives the following information: "A Red, White and Blue
Program compliments of the R. L Watkins Company. Program 1 part 1 ( the
flip side had part 2). Dr. Lyons Tooth Powder presents "Manhattan
Merry-Go Round" World Broadcasting System, Inc. This record is the
property of the War Department of the United States Government and is
not to be broadcast"
There were 4 shows all Program number 1. The other two shows I obtained
were "Hour of Charm" and "The Cities Service Concert" of course with
their regular sponsors. The discs are all from the early 40's.
These are 12 inch discs with the full program and all commercials and
run about 29 minutes in length. The groves almost run out to the edge.
Were many of these made and why did the AFRS switch to 16" discs when
they could get a complete show on a 12 inch disc. My idea is the 12
inch disc with the "micro grove" spacing were too fragile to hold up
physically. Apparently the record manufactures had the ability to put a
lot of material on a disc in the early 40's. After the war this "micro
grove" technology was improved and became very popular.

A poster mentioned that WHAM-TV has "come back" in Rochester. This is
because Clear Channel now owns both WHAM-AM and TV.
A similar thing just happened in Syracuse with historic WSYR-AM.
It the 1970s when WSYR's Newhouse owners were forced to divest themselves of
the newspaper, FM or TV, they chose to keep WSYR-AM and sell the broadcast
outlets. The TV station eventually became WSTM-TV.
Well, it's deja vu all over again. Clear Channel bought WSYR-AM and WIXT-TV.
Just this week they changed WIXT to WSYR-TV.
Meanwhile WSTM-TV (NEE th original WSYR-TV) ain't none too [removed]
