I read the article. I looked at the photo and I'm getting a mixed
message. So I'm asking, "what's all the fuss about?"

The photo shows a solider looking at a pop 12" LP album of Larry Gatlin.
The records on the shelf in the yellow sleeves appear to be the same
size, and if I am not wrong, the time frame for this station given in
the article would lead me to expect a lot of 12" records, not 16". The
article also says 75 - 16 X 16 boxes to ship them. I just don't see a
photo to support the existence of 16" records. Perhaps they are using
standard 16" boxes to ship 12" records for extra protection. Yes, there
could be some late vintage OTR in there, but the prospects so far look
to me like a buncha old LPs. More details are desired.

Subject: This week in radio history 18-24 December

From The Today in History, NY Times

12/19

1932 the British Broadcasting Corporation began transmitting overseas
with its Empire Service to Australia.

12/22

1920 WEAF, in New York City, aired the first broadcast of a prize
fight from ringside. The fight was broadcast from Madison Square Garden
where Joe Lynch defeated Peter Herman to retain the bantamweight title.
Bantamweights top the scales at 118 pounds. Just think, either of those
boxers could have been mistaken for the microphone stand.

1922 WEAF once again proved to be the pillar of radio promotion. This
time they broadcast radio's first double wedding ceremony. 4,000
spectators watched as the two couples exchanged vows at Grand Central
Palace. The broadcast was made in conjunction with the American Radio
Exposition. The couples each got $100; a hefty sum in 1922 ($1268 in
2009 dollars).

12/23

In 1928, the National Broadcasting Company set up a permanent, coast to
coast network.

 From Today=s Almanac --

In 1947, the transistor was invented, leading to a revolution in
communications and electronics.

12/24

1906 Professor Reginald A. Fessenden sent his first radio broadcast
from Brant Rock, MA. The program included a little verse, some violin
and a speech. (This is a disputed event according to some sources -ed).

1944 The Andrews Sisters starred in the debut of The Andrews Sisters'
Eight to the Bar Ranch on ABC. Patty, Maxene and LaVerne ran a fictional
dude ranch. George 'Gabby' Hayes was a regular guest along with Vic
Schoen's orchestra. The ranch stayed in operation until 1946.

Quoting from Jim Harmon's book, "The Great Radio Heroes": "From the first
the stirring 'William Tell Overture' was the theme. The 'Light Calvary
Overture' was considered, but no more than that. All the show's music was
from the classics-beautiful public domain, royalty-free stuff. Though chosen
for economy, the classic themes gave the show a heroic stature hard to
beat."

Subject: "Contemporary" Rebroadcast of Campbell Theater?

Folks;

I am doing some reel conversions for a good friend and local OTR group.
I've used this opportunity to teach my thirteen-year-old daughter how to
thread a reel - a skill I'd wager few kids her age have acquired. ;)

Anyway, I came across something I'd never heard before. One of the reels
of Campbell Playhouse seem to be "contemporary" (possibly 60's/70's)
rebroadcasts, also sponsored by Campbell Soups, hosted by Helen Hayes. She
"introduces" the stories after the theme music, then throws to Orson Welles
from the late 30's/early 40's, then a "modern" Campbell's commercial, and
into the story.

Anyone know anything about these odd recordings?

          Charlie
