Janet Waldo is our actress of the month for September. She is featured
this week in a favorite story of Both George Burns and Gracie Allen.

FAVORITE STORY
from 03/18/47 Episode (039) Mystery Of Room 323.

We lost Irving Fein at the age of 101 on 08/10/2012.

Irving worked early in his career in motion pictures and later did
publicity for Jack Benny. He managed both Benny and George Burns until
there deaths.

In 2006, Frank Bresee interviewed Fein for Yesterday USA. We'll hear
that interview next.

One of the best gossip columnists of the 1940's and 50's was Hedda Hopper.

She had a weekly radio show for years and we next hear an example of,
HEDDA HOPPER
from 02/04/51 Episode (16) with Alan Young Mike Romanoff.

Finally we'll hear Dinah Shore in
THE FORD SHOW
from 03/19/47 Episode (30) with Ralph Edwards.

CLASSICS & CURIOS

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 44

Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers: "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom Time"

"Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom Time" kicks off this edition of "Eddie
Hubbard & the Browsers" from 1996. "Cherry Pink" was Perez Prado's big
hit in 1955 and in fact was number 1 for 10 weeks in the [removed] That same
year it reached number 1 in Germany and the United Kingdom as well. Also
in 1955 Lawrence Welk was a hit on TV with Champagne Ladies Alice Lon
and Norma Zimmer, Myron Floren, Jo Ann Castle, the Lennon Sisters, and
many others. The Browsers challenge you to name more performers who
became huge stars on the Welk show, especially one who performed often
in New Orleans. And on this Browsers show the guys move from the
"Whine/Wine Cellar" to "Trivia Tower" to play great bands like Benny
Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Gray, and Frankie Carle. along with featured
singers such as Doris Day, Dick Haymes, and Marjorie Hughes. Bands and
singers bring such tunes as "Hooray for Love," "Begin the Beguine,"
"When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," "The Gypsy in My Soul," "Bourbon
Street," "O, What It Seemed to Be," "Swanee River Boogie," "Indian Love
Call," "I'm Making Believe," Johnny Maddox's "Crazy Otto," and "Jersey
Bounce." Along the way, Browsers ask you to come up with songs with
"Gypsy" in the title besides "Gypsy in My Soul." And can you name
Canadians who became stars in the [removed] music world besides Gisele
MacKenzie? What was the original title of the song "Swanee River," and
who wrote it? What bands did Dick Haymes sing for? We know that Tommy
Dorsey had a huge hit with "Indian Love Call," but other performers did
also. Can you name them? There's a "Phil's Phooler" question as well,
and the answer is included at the end of the show. So now join in the
laughter and musical joy, two of God's most precious blessings!

Again, many thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting the
original Eddie Hubbard studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time

Episode 5

In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"
