Subject: Green Hornet question

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Hi everyone:

Can someone tell me who the actor was that played Sgt. Burke in most of the
Green Hornet episodes? And also, whether that person had a career in film or
show business outside of radio?

Thanks,

Mike Messner

Subject: Shadow Author Question

This question was inspired by Anthony Tollin, who's post made me wonder
about this. Who were the authors for the 1937/1938 Blue Coal Shadow season
with Orson Welles? I ask because I've always found the writing in that
series to be the best of the Shadow programs. I listen to stories like, "the
Silent Avenger," and "The Phantom Voice," and find them a bit more complex
than the stories that came later; even in the Goodrich 1938 Welles season.
Any info is much appreciated.

Subject: Lights Out fan club

Matthew Killmeier commented:

I recently read a 1940 profile of Arch Oboler in The Christian Science
Monitor that claimed Lights Out had "some hundred fan clubs around the
country." Does anyone have any personal knowledge of such clubs, or know of
sources that would corroborate them.

The answer lies in where they got their information. I have a copy of that
same article and I suspect they took the word of Oboler (from his mouth to
their ears) as the gospel. Oboler, of course, would not known unless he
received a copy of a letter mailed direct to him (or a copy of a letter sent
to the network) requesting permission from a radio listener for his
"blessing" to do a fan club. Seriously, anyone can have a fan club without
the need of a blessing, but it was not uncommon (I've seen a few in archives
and reprinted a couple of those fan-club-request letters in books I've
written). As for the exact number, or whether it hit the 100 mark, is
probably impossible. How many people right now can verify at least ten of
them? I can verify two from archival searches at University Archives, nothing
more. So Oboler probably told them and whether he exaggerated or was stating
a fact is something that cannot be 100 percent verified.

Articles like the one about Arch Oboler in THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR have
been used as "facts" for other write ups about LIGHTS OUT such as John
Dunning's ON THE AIR and an article in FILMFAX back in the late 1980s. But
without verifying CHRISTIAN's sources, one has to take it with a grain of
salt.
