Does anybody have an episode of Quick As A Flash, with Ken Roberts
hosting? For its time, it was a really fine show!

Subject: Free stuff
Derek Tague writes:
Jack nonchalantly instructs Rochester to write down [I'm being arbitrary
here] "my 1943 Oldsmobile," to which Roch says "But, boss, you don't have a
1943 Oldsmobile." Jack then confidently boasts "I Do Now!"suggesting that he'd
soon acquire one because of the free plug. Obviously, the exact details
escape me. Oh, Laura?
Ah, you're probably thinking of when Jack asks Rochester to go up and turn
on his General Electric blanket. Same basic joke structure as you've detailed.
When I interviewed writer John Tackaberry's son, Stace, he recalled that
they had a three-car garage in which they could only park two cars. Through
connections, the third space was taken up by a weekly delivery of tons of free
stuff, from booze to just about anything, for the possibility of (or in
response to) such product placement.

Subject: Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade
Apparently there's a new book out about the various incarnations of The
Maltese Falcon, with a chapter devoted to the radio version of Sam
Spade:
"Discovering The Maltese Falcon and Sam Spade: The Evolution of
Dashiell Hammett's Masterpiece, Including John Huston's Movie with
Humphrey Bogart, edited by Richard Layman"
You can read more at [removed] . The
website states that the book is available on Sept 1, but that's
apparently inaccurate, because I can't find it listed anyplace. This is
the second in this publisher's series of books on and by Dashiell
Hammett. The first, a new collection of Hammett's "lost stories", was
supposed to be published in early September, but is listed as not yet
available on amazon and Barnes & Noble. So it's probably no surprise
that the second book in the series isn't out yet either.
Anyway, I thought some folks on this list might be interested to hear
about the book. Not sure if I'll buy it myself; if anybody else does,
could they let me know if the section on radio is in-depth enough to
justify getting it?
