I'm looking for possible recordings of Walt Lochman, a Kansas City-area
sports broadcaster in the 1930s and early 1940s. He called for the White Sox
in 1943 which may be the most likely source of any recordings with his work.
If any digesters have recordings with some of Lochman's work I'd love to get
a copy for an upcoming presentation.
Thanks,
Ryan Ellett

CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 45
Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers: "Babyface," "I Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder"
Known as Four Boys & a Guitar" when they began their career, "The Mills
Brothers" begin this current Browsers show with "I Can't Give You
Anything But Love, Baby." They join other performers on this broadcast
such as Anita O' Day, Dick Powell, Teddy Powell, Eddie Howard, Benny
Goodman, Dick Rondo, Dick Jurgens, Art Mooney, Joe Sanders, Tony Pastor,
and Toni Harper with songs like "Midnight in Moscow," "Angel in
Disguise," "Flamin' Mamie," "Rosalie," "White Silver Sands," "Remember
When," "You're the Top," "Babyface," "I Telephoned, I Telegraphed," "I
Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder," and "Who Do You Know in Heaven?" -- Well, I
know lots of folks in heaven, especially the One who helps make our
music so wonderful. And while there is lots of music to enjoy on this
edition of the Browsers, my favorite song this time is probably "You're
the Top," with joyful music and lyrics by Cole Porter. Porter was
inspired to include really fun, creative, and clever rhymes, much like
Johnny Mercer lyrics. In "You're the Top" Porter brings together such
diverse images as Durante's nose, the feet of Fred Astaire, Whistler's
mama, Inferno's Dante, a turkey dinner, and a Derby winner. Check out
all 7 inspired verses online at a source such as [removed]
Can you name the Broadway show in which "You're the Top" was featured?
How about songs that have titles about distance communicating, such as
the telephone tune above? Other trivia questions relate to such things
as girl groups that sang with Bing Crosby, Kay Kyser at the Blackhawk in
Chicago, the movie singer of "Rosalie," Xavier Cugat's vocalist Charro,
Elvis' base player Bill Black, "Is everybody happy?" Ted Lewis, and
Johnny Desmond on the radio Breakfast Club. The closing song for this
Browsers broadcast is "Hill Street Blues." Sadly, of course, Eddie's
website is no longer available, but if you wish to send a brief positive
message to his widow Lil, I can forward it to her. Just click on my
e-mail address here on Jerry's website or, if you wish later on, just go
to my website at [removed] (also here on Jerry's site)
where my e-mail address is also accessible. And, of course, constructive
comments are always welcome. As we go to the Browsers, I recall that
Edna St. Vincent Millay once observed, "Beauty is whatever gives you
joy." Truly then big band music is a thing of beauty and, as we have
shared before, gives us one of God's most precious joys. So with more of
the beauty and joy of good music, here are the Browsers.
Thanks once more to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting this
program from the original studio tape for highest quality rebroadcast.

Make Believe Ballroom Time
Episode 5
In December 1946 Tommy Dorsey was one of eight big band leaders who shut
down their bands for good. They believed the big band era had come to a
close. Two tears later, Tommy Dorsey began a come-back aimed at "the
kids of America who deserved a chance to dance to the big bands again".
This program starts with the Dorsey band of 1946 with Tommy broadcasting
from Los Angeles with his special [removed] Ellington. The program
goes on to 1953 with the Dorsey band "alive and well" in New York City
broadcasting from The Stattler Hotel on NBC. You'll find all this with
facts about Tommy and stats about the year [removed] you know the
microwave oven was introduced at that time? Check us out on " It's Make
Believe Ballroom Time"

I read Charlie's request for information about the series, Court of
Human Relations, earlier this month and saw Paul Thompson's comments
this morning in Digest #149. After checking, I discovered I have a
single episode of the series in my collection. My apologies for not
checking earlier.
If anyone else is interested in the series, I've placed a copy on the

Subject: Re: Racism in the forties
After reading R. R. King's observation about Norman Corwin's unwitting
support of racism and the "Sounding Out!" article that King links to, I am
reminded of the sixth episode in the late nineties' "Remember WENN" series,
now available on DVD. The late Howard Rollins plays Lord Branley on "The
Hands of Time" when actor Mackie loses his voice and Rollins, a waiter from
the next-door Buttery, fills in for him at the last moment. But when the
owner of this unfamiliar voice becomes a mystery man to WENN's radio
listeners, all sorts of tricks are used to keep Rollins from being
recognized by a visiting columnist who would otherwise expose Rollins' race
in contrast to the bigoted racial mores of the day. There are several
poignant moments in this program, including a rehearsal between Jeff and
Rollins for an Amos and Andy clone called "The Fife and Dime Show" in which
Jeff (Hugh O'Gorman) is suddenly embarrassed to take part in a program that
makes racial stereotypes of black people -- an emotion that he probably
wouldn't have experienced playing opposite a white actor.
Jan Bach
P. S. I've been with this newsgroup for over twenty years and every so often
this subject of racism comes up in discussing the programs of radio's golden
age. But the past is the past and cannot be changed; the best we can do
today is to fight the attitudes of prejudice and discrimination that, I'm
afraid, are still very much with us.
