Subject: Dunning's OTR books
Obviously one of John Dunning's goals for "On the Air: The Encyclopedia of
Old-Time Radio" was to correct errors made in his earlier version ("Tune in
Yesterday: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio 1925-1976") and
doubtless he succeeded. Therefore I find it interesting that a correct fact
in the earlier book was changed into an incorrect one in his revised book.
In "Tune in Yesterday" he correctly named a character on the Jimmy Durante
Show as Hotbreath Houlihan but in the revised book the name given is Hotlips
Houlihan. That obviously shows what a strong influence the TV series M*A*S*H
had!

Subject: re: AFRS Discs and Patriotic psas
Dixonhayes asked about patriotic PSA's that turned up in the late 40s and
early 50s on shows like "Bing Crosby".
I think these may have emerged because of the Communist hunts going on in
the entertainment industry at the time and not because of any coordinated
ad campaign. The networks were being pressured to ferret out any
Communist sympathizers on staff and did make an effort to portray
themselves as patrotic good citizens. Also, the networks had to carry a
certain amount of public service programming and prove to the FCC they
were acting in the public interest. The PSA's probably were designed to
help with that.
Fred asked about AFRS discs. Unfortunately, there's no master discography
of AFRS transcriptions that can tell you what show is on a particular
disc. There's a general discography by Mackenzie that gives a few
examples from each series and there are ones that deal in depth with
"Command Performance", "Mail Call" and the AFRS Basic Musical Library
series.
On original 40s and 50s AFRS discs, however, you can determine what
episode is contained on most of the issues, at least from network
programs. Look at the matrix area near the label and you should see a
date there - that date is usually the original network broadcast date of
the show. They stopped doing this in the early 1960s and reissue discs
from the 60s and 70s of shows like "Suspense" won't have the date there.
Thom Whetson told me that, on the 60s and 70s discs, the RU number
indicates the month and year that the disc was issued, based on AFRS's
fiscal year that started in October. I have an "Arthur Godfrey" disc with
the number RU-39-7, so it would have been released week 39 of the 1967
fiscal year. Thom estimated that this show was broadcast on CBS around
June 1967, allowing for a couple of weeks to master and press the show.
Because there's so much collector interest in "Suspense", I went through
logs around the web that mentioned the AFRS number of particular shows and
discs in my own collection, matching them to a log of the series to
estimate what the AFRS program numbers of missing shows might be. You can
see a list of the missing shows and what would probably be the AFRS
numbers at my site:
[removed]
If I see a "Suspense" disc, I'll use these numbers in conjunction with a
log of the show to figure out what episode it might be.
I'd note it's always a good idea to actually listen to an AFRS disc,
particularly of a show like "Suspense". Once in a while, they would use a
rehearsal version of a program rather than the broadcast network version.
Here's a "Rocky Jordan" that used a rehearsal of the show with rough sound
effects and an organ track:

Subject: AFRS and matrix numbers
Hello Fred and Everybody,
I'm looking at Mackenzie's AFRS Directory of the AFRS Series, page 200.
Beginning in 1949, the AFRS adopted a new system of transcription
marking RU stands for Round Up, and is shown in the form of the week of
the fiscal year. The fiscal years run from July to June. FY 1963 begins
in July 1962 and ends June 1963. The first figure after the RU denotes
the week of the fiscal year and the single figure represents the year. 3
for 1963 and so on. There is no explanation for entries marked RF
instead of RU.
So if I am reading this correctly, RU 14-0 10A 1856F would be the 14th
week of the FY ending June 1960. Or you could count forward 14 weeks
from July 1959. I don't have a calendar for 1959. I'm guessing 10 is the
stamper number? A & B the side, and 1856 may be an episode number?
May I ask where you leaned the F stood for Friday? It seems reasonable.
Are there any marked M, or W, or with double letters that would indicate
TH-ursday or SA-turday, as opposed to SU-nday? Or maybe the letter is a
stamper indicator?
This all seems needlessly complicated but there must have been some
reasoning behind it. Then again the AFRS used different methods of
marking their ETs, 2 or 3 different systems I gather from the book.
Jim Pewter's show is listed on p. 207. The series is EN 824 (EN for
entertainment, AFRS produced). In this example the RU number is RU-40-6,
so week 40 of the fiscal year beginning in July 1966. # is 1287 from 27
Feb 1966.
This is the only reference to Jim Pewter in the book. What other series
do you have?
As far as an AFRS log, what a gargantuan project that would be.
Mackenzie's book is not that and does not claim to be, as wonderful as
it is. He also references some omissions from the AFRS logs he looked
at, so I'm afraid a complete log would be a futile task.

Subject: Patrotic PSAs
Dixon asked the musical question: "..what's the story behind these? Who put them
out, the
networks, the Ad Council, some agency that didn't sign their name, who?
And why was it necessary to air PSAs reminding us to love our country the
same way we're reminded not to start forest fires and not to litter?"
Can't say for certain, but I think you may be talking about the programs aired to
our troops
overseas. The commercials were removed for broadcasting by AFRTS and patriotic
bits along with USAFI
and Savings Bond ads were inserted to fill in the commercials spaces and to make
the programs closer
to their half-hour or quarter-air original length with commercials.

According to Jim Harmon's "The Great Radio Heroes", James Thurber once
stated: "A soap opera is a kind of sandwich. Between thick slices of
advertising, spread twelve minutes of dialogue, add predicament, villainy,
and female suffering in equal measure, throw in a dash of nobility, sprinkle
with tears, season with organ music, cover with a rich announcer sauce and
serve five times a week."

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Of course we're talking about the REPS Showcase, old time radio convention,
which has been put on by the Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound since June of
1993. The event is just a little over two weeks from now in Bellevue
Washington at the Coast Hotel - June 24th through the 26th. Some of the
guests who are scheduled to appear are Tommy Cook, Ben Cooper, Ivan Cury,
Chuck McCann, Gloria McMillan, Shirley Mitchell, Rosemary Rice, Stuffy
Singer, Beverly Washburn and more. It's an opportunity to meet and befriend
the voices of radio's past. We invite anyone who will be in the Seattle area
this June to join us for the REPS Showcase. The weekend will be full of
interviews, presentations and reenactments of some of our favorite shows.
Chuck McCann will play Phil Harris in a reenactment of the Phil Harris and
Alice Faye show. Tim Knofler is
creating some pretty special - special effects for the reenactment of Three
Skeleton Key from Escape. Rosemary Rice is producing and directing a
Saturday afternoon radio reenactment of the motion picture musical "Meet Me
in St. Louis" from a 1946 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Sunday morning REPS
will be sponsoring a brunch where we will present a special salute to the life
and career of Shirley Mitchell. The event will include audio and video clips
of Shirley's work over the years, with memories from friends and family. You
can get further details by going to the Showcase web site at
[removed]. We've had a little fun on the site lately posting
promotional clips for Showcase 2011 featuring Beverly Washburn, Rosemary Rice
and a 5 minute interview with Shirley Mitchell. Why you are on the Showcase
site you may want to link over to the REPS main web site as you will find a
link to the REPS You Tube site, and the audio podcast site. There we have
posted videos and audios of past REPS events. You can find audios of a few
past recreations and also interviews with old time radio personalities. There
are only a few now but we do hope to post additional audios and videos
regularly.
Thank you
