That badge would be a 1936 Little Orphan Annie Decoder Pin. The ROA SS
stands for Radio Orphan Annie Secret Society. The design of the decoder pins
varied from year to year. I recently came across a 1939 decoder pin. The ROA
and crossed keys were still in the design, but the SS had been removed due to
the more sinister definition of SS which the oncoming war with Germany gave to
the initials.

Subject: "Lum and Abner" comic strip, third year
The third year of the "Lum and Abner" comic strip (including audio
performances) is up and running at a new location. The new site contains a
weekly update from the cartoonist (that's me), an archive of past strips, and
more. You're invited to join us there. We're also on Facebook at "Lum and
Abner Comic Strip Group."
Sponsorships are being extended through this month, while this reorganization
process takes place.

Subject: Mysterious OTR badge
The badge that [removed] Hinkley described on the Digest is one of many such
badges distributed by "Radio's Orphan Annie" over the years hence the
initials R, O, and A on the badge.
This item is usually described in nostalgia catalogs as "Secret Compartment
Decoder Pin" and depending on condition, can fetch from $ 5 to $40 on the
usual market.
NOTE: In 1936 alone, Annie gave out nine different premiums, including the
above pin, compliments of sponsor, Ovaltine chocolate powder drink. These
included a ROA manual, silver ring, Silver Star Manual, book about dogs
(including Sandy), map of her town, Simons Corners, and a birthstone ring.
