Subject: Re: Tiu
Does anyone remember this child prodigy of the 50s?
She performed on so many variety shows in the 50s, then disappeared.
I remember her well from her appearances on Ed Sullivan. I teach literature,
and in Amy Tan's THE JOY LUCK CLUB, a girl sees a Chinese-American piano
prodigy on TV. I tell my students that the unnamed girl is Ginny Tiu. I don't
know whether she had a demanding mother, as the mother in Tan's book has, but
if she did, that might explain why she disappeared after she grew up.
I did a google search on her and it shows that she has performed in Waikiki
at some sheraton Hotels, but not much else is available.
A few years ago I did similar searches and was gratified to see that she
still looks great and seems happy playing in Honolulu.

Subject: Judy Garland
There is one mistake that I have found over and over, Judy Garland's
birthplace. Both Leonard Maltin and Roger C. Paulson have made the
mistake in their fine publications. They have her listed as being born
in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In fairness to Minnesota, she was born in
Grand Rapids, MINNESOTA. A few years ago I made the trip to Grand
Rapids, Minnesota and indeed seen the house where she once lived. I
hope that this will set the record straight. Probably not though.

Subject: Wall St Jnl review of Green Hornet
Joe Morgenstern is the long-time film reviewer for the Wall Street Journal,
and his opening line says it all:
"The Green Hornet" may not be the end of movies as we know them, though
the people who made this atrocity were certainly in there trying.
to which he adds later:
The film's only unqualified success is the end title sequence "because
it's genuinely stylish, because it looks like it was shot in genuine 3-D and,
most of all, because it's the end.

Subject: Jack Boxes with Rochester
Following up, I've found the episode where Rochester decks Jack. It's
February 5, 1939. It's pretty much as Sean describes it, although Jack isn't
losing before he cheap-shots Rochester, they're just sparring. And after Jack
takes his unfair punch, Rochester returns the favor.

Subject: re: Ma Perkins first episode?
In the last Digest, Larry Maupin pointed to a post on my blog about my
disc of "Ma Perkins" containing Pgm 423 perhaps being the "first" episode
in the series, noting that the announcer went into detail about the
characters and setting and noted we're meeting her "for the first time".
One interesting thing to note about this is that it's an uncoated aluminum
disc. When researching a possible date for it and why it might have been
made, I ran into the info on the series being syndicated in Canada, along
with other US shows (which prompted the Canadian government to start
encouraging more "home grown" programming).
"Ma Perkins" was on the air earlier than the August 1935 date that Goldin
attributes to this particular show, so theory is that this might be the
423rd show in the overall series, but the first heard in syndication, just
picking up with the story at that point. I'd be doubtful they'd start the
story all over again and number it this way.
I never could determine if this was actually the disc that was used if
the show was syndicated. From what I understand, because of the sound
quality, uncoated aluminum discs weren't used for broadcast and are more
usually found as a record for a sponsor or performer. If it was
syndicated, the disc used might have been pressed on shellac or acetate
and this aluminum disc could be a rehearsal or "check" copy made for a
sponsor or someone associated with the production.
With no sponsor info or commercials, this sounds like it would have been a
version recorded especially for syndication in tandem with the version
produced for regular US network broadcast.
I also put up the other side of the disc containing #424 that continues
the story - Goldin, at the time I posted it, didn't have it listed in his
database.
Did Goldin's info come from this copy or was there another disc of this
show floating around? Did the one for Goldin's listing come from this (or
another) uncoated aluminum disc or a shellac or acetate pressed disc? Was
it one-sided or did it have #424 on the other side like my disc?

sleeve with some notes on [removed]

Subject: Cast list for Chandler's Michael Shayne?
Hello, I'm working my way through The New Adventures Of Michael Shayne with
Jeff Chandler. He's the only one who is identified in the cast though. Has
anyone gone through and figured out the other cast members? There's a lady
on there who has a smoky Southern voice, plus a man with a rougher voice
than William Conrad, and I'm sure others. I can pick out Jack Webb there,
but if anyone has the other names, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks a lot.

On the latest "Old Time Radio Classics" from Jerry Haendiges, the
announcer of the NBC program Music from Hollywood, aired in 1951,
identifies himself at the opening as "Don Rickles." At the closing he
calls himself, "Gaylord Rickles."
Is this man connected at all with the comedian Don Rickles, who was
about 25 years old at that time? In any case, is he an announcer
anyone remembers from other shows?

Subject: Green Hornet movie
I just saw the new Green Hornet movie. Very mixed emotions about it. If
you have no idea about the Green Hornet, it is a very entertaining film. If
you do have memories of past Hornets, then, like me, you might this film
silly and predictable. Except for the music. Every note of it was simply
awful.
However, someone connected with the film deserves credit for paying homage
to the source not once, but twice. In one short scene there is an image of
the Lone Ranger. And then as the end credits start, there is one on the
screen all by itself which reads "Based on the Green Hornet radio series
created by George W. Trendle." They probably had to do that, but regardless
of the reason it was nice to see.

I have just returned from seeing it. It was not as lame as I feared, it
was clever in spots and entertaining, but I don't plan to see it again.
I do feel that it is worth seeing once.
It is being billed as a comedy adventure, and it had some humorous
moments. Being in IMAX and 3D was part of the reason I wanted to see it.
In the credits there is a credit for a Lone Ranger image, which I
honestly did not see. It was probably something in the background - one
of those things you could look for when the DVD comes out, but I don't
plan to buy it.

Someone commented:
In an accompanying article Randy indicates that the show is from a
transcription disc labeled "Pgm #423" and speculates that it may have aired
over a Canadian station. He also provides a link to [removed]
where the episode is listed with an "approximate" date of August 1935.
Few comments to add:
1. The series was heard over Canada, not just from affiliates broadcasting
close to the border, but stations in Canada that ended up broadcasting the
series via remote. But the Canadian hookups were not until 1941 (judging from
inter-office communication I have in my files).
[removed] is not a definite source of information. Not a bad source,
but not anything definite. Even dates that are listed as accurate have been
revised. Goldin continues to revise the site every few months. After the
GREEN HORNET book came out, he, like many collectors out there, corrected the
broadcast dates.
3. A program number on a transcription disc is not necessarily the same as an
episode number. Anyone who collects discs, including Prof. Biel, would be
able to confirm that. "Pgm #423 could mean almost anything."
4. It's very possible it is the first episode of the series because Jay
Hickerson (in his ULTIMATE GUIDE) has the start date as December 4, 1933, and
he lists recordings from December 4 and 5 do exist in circulation, so it's
probably the same recording.
