real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

Like many of you who are still around from the OTR era, I was a child in the
1940s. There were many personalities who aimed their shows toward kids, but
the one I most remember is Frank Luther.

I've been able to find copies of records featuring this master entertainer
of kids, but does anyone know of a source for his radio shows? So far, I've
turned up nothing.

From the previous issue of the Digest:

May 7th births

05-07-1840 - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - St. Petersburg, Russia - d.
11-6-1893
composer: Some of his compositions were used as themes
===========
Ah, a special fav composer.

I know that a theme from the Piano Concerto #1 was used as a cue in the
opening of the War of the Worlds. I think something from his 5th
Symphony was used for a program theme but I do not remember where I may
have heard it. A lot of classical music was used in OTR and we have
discussed that here.

Can anyone cite any other uses of Tchaikovsky's music in OTR?

Of course there were many live performances of his music during
concerts, but I am hoping to find more examples from traditional OTR shows.

Subject: Harry Shearer on radio

While there is no definitive log of Harry Shearer's radio appearances that
I'm aware, I have heard him on a 1955 episode of "Our Miss Brooks" and a
couple of appearances on "Lux Radio Theater" toward the end of that show's
run--most notably in a supporting role to Dan Dailey and Dorothy McGuire in
1954's "Blueprint For Murder," but also on Edmund Gwenn's last performance of
"Miracle on 34th Street." And of course, there's "Le Show" every weekend on
NPR and probably a lot more that I'm not aware of.

I entirely agree with all Dave Siegel said in yesterday's Digest #72 about
Martin Grams Jr's book on "The Shadow". I received my copy in England
yesterday and it is definitely the best book on any OTR programme that I have
seen. It's also the biggest and everything anyone would want to know about
this character can be found in the 800+ pages. It will take me a long time
to read it all and I know I shall refer to it often. I have most of Martin's
books and this is the best one - so far. I hope one day Martin will write
a similar book about "The Whistler". In the meantime, if you have not yet
ordered "The Shadow", you can do so online at _[removed]_
