Subject: Percy Hemus
Ron Sayles' always-informative birth/death list indicates Percy Hemus'
birth date as 3-7-1878 and his death date as 12-22-1943.
My question is, did Hemus ever have any kind of singing career? It
seems to me that I heard/saw an old 78 rpm record with a vocalist named
Percy Hemus singing a religious hymn of some kind. I know the record is
old and probably predates his passing, so it could be the same person.
Additionally, the name is not what you would call common. I've checked
IMDB, but details were scant.
Since my recollection is that this was a religious hymn, does anyone
know anything of his religious beliefs?
Feel free to e-mail me off-list if you wish, and many thanks.

Subject: Re: recycled plots
Ron Plumb noticed a Shadow script had been reused eighteen months later
as a Suspense script. So I had to sit down and listen to both. Sure
enough! It wasn't a word-for-word rewrite with only the names changed,
but it still was most assuredly the same plot.
Apparently reusing scripts was a common practice back in radio's heyday.
I'm aware of various shows that reused scripts, Mysterious Traveler,
Strange Dr. Weird, Sealed Book, etc. And Carlton E. Morse was famed for
reusing his own scripts over and over. But this is the first Shadow
story was I've run across that was reused later.
Scriptwriter Peter Barry wrote over forty Shadow radio plays, beginning
as early as 1939's "The Stockings Were Hung" and continuing through the
final 1954 season. He went on to write for television, including
"Studio One," "The Man from [removed]" and "Combat!" He even wrote the
script for a Shadow television pilot, which never went to series. (It's
currently available on DVD.)
Is Peter Barry still alive? Did he often use his previous scripts for
new projects? Perhaps someone here can provide further information on
this hard-working writer.
Is anyone here aware of any other Shadow scripts which went on to be
reused for other series? I'm restricting my question to Shadow scripts
only, since opening it up to the reuse of any OTR scripts might make for
a very long answer.

Subject: CBS radio guide
I vaguely recall once handling a library copy of a small magazine
published by CBS in late 1930s or early 1940s that was a guide to all
CBS programs. What is the history of this publication? How many issues
were published? How was it marketed? Why was it discontinued? Did
other networks do this?

Subject: Mr and Mrs North
Last night I listened to an episode of Mr and Mrs North, dated 12/30/42 and
titled "The Picnic". (I have no idea if either the date or the title are
official.) It starred Peggy Conklin and Carl Eastman as the titular
characters, who were billed as "America's most attractive couple". What was
really bizarre about the show is that it was not a crime show -- there was no
murder, nor any other criminal activity, during the entire episode. It came
across more as a Burns and Allen knockoff than a Thin Man clone. Does anybody
know more about this episode? Was it a pilot for a series that never made it
off the ground? (At the end the announcer says the next episode will be
broadcast next week, but in my experience auditions often say that.) Peggy
Conklin starred in the stage version of the play, and the movie with Gracie
Allen came out in 1942, so perhaps this was an attempt to cash in on the
movie's success? (Assuming that broadcast date is correct.) At what
point did the series shift into a mystery program, and when did Alice Frost
and Joseph Curtin take over the title roles?
