over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

Subject: Re: Dates

Ted asks:

I wonder why it is so difficult to come up with the broadcast dates for some
shows. Didn't the networks maintain records? The sponsors? Writers?
Stars?

I'm curious what shows you are referring to. I'd venture to guess that the
vast majority of circulating network shows have dates attached (or those
dates are easily attainable). You may be wondering about syndicated shows.
There seems to be no end of confusion about which shows were syndicated and
exactly what that means.

The practice of broadcast syndication started in 1928 with the serial run of
Amos 'n' Andy. The shows would be recorded several weeks in advance, then
sent to subscribing stations to be played simultaneously with the live
broadcasts that originated at WMAQ, Chicago. Amos 'n' Andy is a special case
in that each episode was intended to be only broadcast once on a particular
day and had a live broadcast that theoretically occurred at the same time as
playback of the recordings. Much syndicated radio was not that way.

As syndication progressed in the '30s, many shows were limited or short run
of perhaps 13, 26, 39, or 52 episodes (those are common run lengths; many
shows were shorter or longer). These shows were often bicycled from one
station to another: once the first station finished an episode, it would send
the ET on to to the next station in the chain. This could go on for many
years. There are Transco shows from the early '30s that were still being
bicycled to small stations in the '50s.

It is usually impossible to assign a "first broadcast" date to these shows,
as many stations would be playing them near simultaneously on their own
schedules.

Often syndicated shows are given first run dates by collectors and dealers by
using newspaper listings for New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago stations.
These dates are not necessarily inaccurate because they represent real
broadcast dates, but they may not be the true first broadcast dates. For
syndicated shows, these are often impossible to obtain without paperwork from
the syndication companies (which in most cases doesn't exist).

There has been a lot of writing done in this area. Michael Biel's
dissertation, The Making and Use of Broadcast Recordings Prior to 1936, is a
treasure trove of information. Dr. Biel is a member of this list and may
have more comments on this subject.

The bridge music referred to the Shadow is from the 1960s Michaelson
syndication of some of the Shadow shows. Unfortunately, a few shows exist
only in this form.

I have always wanted to know the name of the Barrie Craig theme song.

"The Goldbergs" was the story a Jewish family in the Bronx. Gertrude Berg was
creator, writer, and star. Airing on radio from 1929 to 1946, it became a
feature film, television series and two Broadway shows, a play and musical.

Aviva Kempner has created a film about the series. Currently showing in New
York, it will be seen nationwide.

I've got a question for all of you. If you cold choose 1 OTR program,
update it,
and bring it to television (no matter the genre) what would it be? The
responses I've
received so far are "Candy Matson, Yukon 2-8209", "Mr. and Mrs. North" and
"Doctor Kildare". Let's be clear, however, what I mean by 'update'. I mean
updating
not only historically, but with the modern advances made in technology as
well.
(Especially as far as the detective and police procedural type shows are
concerned.)

I'd be interested to hear your input on this. If there are some of you
who think
presenting a modern day version of an OTR program would be an exercise in
futility,
let me know why. Let me know off list if you wish.

As always,

Kenneth

Subject: Re: Dates

Ted <radioaz@[removed]; asked why it was so difficult to come up with some
broadcast shows. NBC did maintain broadcast logs for both the Red and Blue
networks, and these are available at the Library of Congress, but they mainly
list the title and sponsor of the program, not the contents of particular
episodes. There is a separate card file listing every guest performer and
every song performed, and that is sometimes a way to get a clue. CBS,
Mutual, and ABC are a little more difficult to get to, and most sponsors have
long since discarded info this old -- there's nothing that they could use it
for (but there are a few fortunate exceptions). Ted also asks "I suppose
one reason for latter shows is that once they started transcribing shows
there wasn't "one" broadcast date. Stations could pick up the recording and
play them at a later date." When the networks started allowing the use of
recorded programs they would still be normally sent out on the network for
stations to play simultaneously to the transmission. BUT when it comes to
syndicated programs, that is definately the case because, with a few
exceptions like the pre-network Amos 'n' Andy, there is no real "broadcast"
date. There is a recording date, however, and this can sometimes be found if
the person who transfered the disc took the trouble to copy down all
discographic info about the actual disc, especially the matrix number. And
it is not just the "later" broadcasts that are in the category of
syndication. That began back in 1928, and some programs recorded in the
early 30s were still being syndicated in the late 40s.
