Jean, I believe I understood exactly what Elizabeth said. You may have a
pristine recording (all otr started in analog) and you transfer it to a
digital medium it may suffer 0 degradation, but once it is handed out via
the net in compressed MP3, Real, or .asf files, even assuming no one has
tried to do any "noise reduction" on it, all bets are off, and most OTR
trading happens today via the net.
But if you take your digital recording and make a compressed file, unless
you know what you're doing, you're not making a "copy" of the recording.
That would be akin to making an analog copy by playing on one cassette
player out your speakers and recording on another, [removed] not reel-to-reel.
If you compare doing a reel-to-reel copy versus a digital copy, that's
where you suffer no degradation. No matter how good you are, you're bound
to get some minor degradation in any reel-to-reel copy. But, by the nature
of the medium, a copy of a copy of a copy of a digital file is
degradation-free.
And for the quality of our OTR recordings and the nature of the sound data,
I defy anyone to detect the difference between the original and a 192kb or
better MP3.

"Magic Island" was one of the many low-budget syndicated adventure
serials that flooded the market during the mid-1930s, This particular
series was produced by a company called Radio Producers Sales Company,
headed by one P. C. Crandall -- a company which, like a lot of
smalltime syndication companies, had vanished without a trace by
the end of the 1930s. While only 128 episodes appear to be circulating,
I think 130 is likely the correct number. Elizabeth
You hit the nail right on the head. 130 it is. The series is listed
with 130 15-minute episodes in the 1945 "Radio Showbook" as one of many
series syndicated by Lou R. Winston Radio Transcriptions, 908 No.

Those of us who belong to "The Cinnamon Bear Brigade" have for years been
seeking the elusive actor who played the role of Jimmy Barton on "The
Cinnamon Bear." Not even Elizabeth Heisch, widow of the writer of the
series, remembers. Barbara Jean Wong, who played Jimmy's twin sister,
might have been able to answer, but we didn't locate her until a few months
after she passed away. [Wong, by the way, had a distinguished career in the
Los Angeles public school system!]
However, we have identified virtually all of the actors now except for
Jimmy. One of the last to be identified was Queen Melissa (of Maybeland).
With the considerable help of the Gassman brothers of SPERDVAC fame, we
have determined Rosa Barcelo to have been Queen Melissa. Rosa Barcello
played Joan Gregory on "Magic Island."
This may have been an obscure, syndicated serial, but it did help us in our
search for Melissa.
Now, if we can only locate Jimmy Barton. And please don't tell me it was
the actor who played Jerry on "Jerry of the Circus." In our view, the
voices simply don't match. [ I fully realize that some folks have a
different point of view.]

While only 128 episodes appear to be circulating, I think 130 is likely
the correct number. Syndicated serials were invariably packaged and sold
in thirteen week cycles, or multiples of thirteen weeks. At five episodes
a week, two thirteen-week cycles for a six month run would amount to
exactly 130 episodes.
Elizabeth is quite right about 130 episodes being done, because I have all
130 episodes. If anyone would like to see the plot lines for the last two
episodes, they are listed on my web page.

I agree with RyanO about the show "Cape Cod Mystery Theater". I have 15
titles from this show and find them all to be really well done. Good
stories, acting and sound effects. The story, "The Buoy" about a man
strapped to a buoy in a heavy fog while the tide came in was particularly
effective. I, also, would like to see a log of this show and find out where
I could get more episodes.

This machine was a work of shoddy quality. Like Dan, I took several OTR
MP3's cd's to the store to test drive the machine before buying it. All
cd's were from collections I had purchased on E-Bay (Frontier Genleman, Six
Shooter, Dragnet, etc.); none of them played on the machine.
I picked up two cheap speakers a the local computer show and plug my
expanium into them to serve as a "boombox". BTW, the price on the
AudioLogic Boombox has dropped significantly over the past few months--from
$99 to $49, at Circuit City.

Hi!
RyanO asked about the Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater. Most
libraries (at least those here in Massachusetts) have most
of the tapes. If your local library doesn't have them, you
can still listen to them through inter-library loan, as I
do.
Even better, CCRMT now has their own web site, it shows some
behind the scenes stuff, plus more, and it also tells you
where to purchase their recordings.
Here's the URL:

I ripped and encoded the whole series. I also actually listened to it. I
cannot find anything missing. They always say what happened last time and
it coincides with the previous show. If something is missing I don't know
what it would be. I would guess that because of the amount of days someone
concluded that it should be 130 when if you listen to the show you will
come to the same conclusion that I did. There are only 128
chapters! Chapter 128 does finalize the show leaving really nothing more.

Dan,
The AudioLogic will not handle a sampling rate of [removed] Only [removed] I think
many of the OTR shows on the Internet are sampled at the lower rate to
create a smaller file.
Also, the lowest kps rate it will handle is something like 38, I don't have
the specs right in front of me now. Again, many OTR shows are done at a
rate of around 20 or 22.
If you want to play the shows your downloading you may have to purchase a
Philips unit. Not a boom box, but a very good player you use with headsets.

I took one of my OTR CDs to Circuit City and it wouldn't play in the
machine. My guess is that the sampling rate of OTR CDs is too low to
work on this machine. Fred--can you play OTR CDs on yours? That is, CDs
that have over a hundred shows on them?

The other night I watched (for about the umpteenth time) Woody Allen's
tribute to the Radio era, "Radio Days". Was there anyone that lived
during that time and worked in the medium during the 30's and 40's didn't
get goosebumps and have dajavue about the era after viewing that film? It
sure brought back many memories to me, Especially the scene where the young
Lad went to the big Movie Palace and the radio show. There were some OTR
personalities in that film in Cameos: Dwight Weist, Jackson Beck (voice on
radio), Kitty Callahan. I do not know where it was filmed (I heard it was
done in NY at the Zerotope Studios for the Radio sequences. I also red
somewhere that it was a Biography of Woody (The role played by Seth Green).
That prompted me to go to my Video of Radioland Murders, a perfect
satire - but well done - of the Era. The character played by Ned Beatty was
a sure take-off on Sarnoff, and the writers were not far off base in last
minute writings of scripts. The appearance of George Burns and Rosie Clooney
were classics. My hat goes off to George Lucas for giving - at least me - a
look at the funny side of the radio business.

In answer to Ian's question,
Not much seems to be known about the series, there is even uncertainty
about
the number of episodes, I have 128 and Jerry mentions a 129 and 130, but
nobody else seems to know of those episodes at all. I admit that I have
listened to the end of episode 128 and it doesn't seem to end the series
and
it makes sense that there may have been more episodes planned but not made.
And Elizabeth states;
While only 128 episodes appear to be circulating, I think 130 is likely
the correct number.
130 episode comprise the complete run and I do have all 130 episodes.
It
very definitely ends up with Jerry, Joan and Elaine leaving the island and
preparing to enroll in college.
