Subject: Who Wears The Trousers / Jim and Marian
Jordan
I wanted to thank Phil Watson and others who mentioned
the BBC4 radio series "Who Wears The Trousers", and
their note that the episodes could be heard on the
BBC4 web site. Fortunately I just got a cable modem a
few days ago and can actually listen to the shows(I
tried with Dial-up and just couldnít get it to work).
I do want to ask if anyone knows why the shows on the
web site are incomplete. The first two were 28 minutes
each, but both cut off before the actual end of the
show, although it sounded like the show was wrapping
up anyway and I probably didn't miss too much, I was
just curious why they do this?
Also I wanted to ask if anyone else had listened to
the current show about Jim and Marian Jordan? There
were several revelations and some suspicions confirmed
by relatives of the couple, I believe a niece and a
grandchild. They didn't mention alcoholism as a reason
for Marian's long absence from the show(which has been
rumored), but rather a total nervous and physical
breakdown. They also mention her being one of the
first people to receive shock therapy treatments in an
asylum she was treated in and even a suicide attempt
on an airplane that I've never heard discussed before.
I know this topic was discussed on the Digest a year
or so back and I was just wondering if these were
among the "well known", but not discussed reasons for
her absence at the time. We know that celebrities
private lives were protected more back in those days,
but still after all these years I would have thought
that some of the information might have come out as it
so often does.

Subject: Light Bulb
Q: How many OTR enthusiasts does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: As many as the "theatre of imagination" will allow.
As Jean Shepherd used to close his short-lived 1970s PBS TV-show:
"Think clean thoughts!"

Subject: Elizabeth McLeod's Important Find
To say that Elizabeth's McLeod announcement in Issue #137 was important is a
vast understatement. It may be the most significant discovery of mateial
previously thought lost in the last 30 years. The 15 minute Amos 'n Andy
shows alone make it a major find, but adding material with Paul Whiteman,
Will Rogers, & The Detective Story Hour mark this as the find of the
century. My jaw dropped reading her announcement and I want to congratulate
her for all she has done and continues to do for this great hobby. I will
mark my calendar for April 2004 and await the first release of some of this
material. Again, congratulations to Elizabeth.

Subject: Great New MP3CD Player
Don't know if my last message got sent, or just disappeared, so I'm trying
again. Sorry if you read this post a second time.
I just got the BEST deal on a brand new mp3 cd portable. It's called the
Digitech CDM230, I got it at my local J C Penney Outlet store. Regular price
is $[removed], sale price is $[removed] only April 2-7.
Never heard of the brand before, but I figured I'd give it a try: Hey,
it's only 20 bucks! I didn't expect much at all, but check THIS out!
Plays cds and mp3 cds
Plays low-bitrate (32/22 typical OTR)
Plays hi-bitrate (up to 256 kbts)
40-second buffer on cds
120-second buffer on mp3s (long battery life!)
Scrolls song title
Reads ID3 tags
Navigates folders, not just tracks
+10 track button
5 EQ settings
Bass Boost
Internal battery charge
Even has pretty good headphones!
Some "drawbacks":
No backlight - need daylight/room light to see display
No resume feature - when power is turned off, cd starts from beginning
No folder titles, just numbers
No AC adapter
Poorly translated manual, but MUCH better than most. Pretty easy to decipher,
you won't need your ROA decoder badge.
I've been a big RioVolt fan, it's the Cadillac of mp3 players for OTR
fans. I think that mine cost $160 when it came out 2 years ago. But this
DIGITECH CDM230 hits most of the same high points that the Volt did, and at
only $20! Even without the sale, $50 is a great price for this great unit!
RUN, don't walk, to the store near you with these on sale!
I have no association with this company at all, I just had to let
everyone
in on this superb player. If anyone out there has been comtemplating getting
an mp3 portable, but been put off by the big prices (still up around $150-200
for the best ones!), give this one a try!
I'm still doing testing, but it looks great so far! Any questions,
please
feel free to email me.

Subject: Ralph Bellamy, James Stewart & Lou Merrill:
Where are their papers?
>From time to time, I'm identifying the locations of the papers of
various OTR writers and actors:
Ralph Bellamy's papers are in the phenomenal special collections library
at Boston University.
The whereabouts of James Stewart's papers are a mystery to me. After
Stewart's death, I was in brief contact with his attorney. But I was
unable to find out the answers to my question.
Lou Merrill's papers are in the SPERDVAC library in Los Angeles.

Wow Elizabeth, that news is sensational. I gasped at much of what you
described (the 1927 Rose Bowl, CBS' inaugural broadcast, the "Detective Story
Hour" narrated by the Shadow) even *before* you mentioned "the most important
find in this collection." Then my jaw hit the floor. Did I understand this
correctly--*all* of the "Amos 'N' Andy" shows from 11/29 to 3/32? Wow, this
is a major dig in broadcast and cultural archaelogy. I look forward to all of
these.
And by the way you couldn't have picked a better group for the transfers, the
First Generation Archives. I recently joined just under the wire to get
that "Little Orphan Annie" special and I must say, those 1936-37 broadcasts
are outstanding. I can't wait to hear this other material get the same
treatment.

Being a person who loves a good joke, I sat with a growing smile as I read
the your message "fessing up" to your April Fools message. I, like most
others was taken in hook, line and sinker. I'm impressed that there were a
couple who saw though the smoke.
Anthony Tollin was probably right in thinking you had entirely too much time
on your [removed] I thought you used it very well!
It was a classic!
