Subject: Real Time versus Radio Time
Probably the greatest compression of time in radio can be found in Orson
Welles' 1938 War of the Worlds. Bear in mind, that depending on the alignment
of the earth and Mars, the distance between them is in the neighborhood of
100 million to 140 million miles, so a journey from one to the other should
take about 170-300 days in the fastest space craft available.
However in the WOTW program, all done in "real time" it's less than a half
hour from when the fiery disturbances are noticed on Mars by Professor
Pierson (voice of Orson Welles) which appear to be "jet blue flames shot from
a gun" and the projectiles shot from Mars start arriving in the vicinity of
Grovers Mill, NJ.
Despite the scientific impossibility of this speedy journey from Mars,
thousands of listeners were convinced it had really happened and the poor
souls reacted, often with dismaying results.

I saw this show as well. The guest was Orson Welles and they began talking
about the old radio days. The soap opera came up and the tale was about a guy
who goes into a revolving door and goes into flash back that last for months.
