Subject: Re: Aging voices
A bit of a debate was going on here about whether voices move into
a higher or lower pitch as a person ages.
Ben asks about stereotyping of old men's voices as being
high-pitched. I guess in real life my experience is that maybe a
third of the seniors do have a deeper, grumpier voice ... a
third, not much change from younger years ... and a third have
higher-pitched voices. So it varies.
I once had the opportunity to speak with Mel Blanc (a delightful and
fascinating gentleman) and asked him, since he'd been doing some of his
characters for a long time, whether Bugs Bunny, for instance, sounded
different than he did forty years earlier. Blanc said that because of
the natural tendency of the voice to deepen as a person grows older they
were speeding up the tape on his Bugs Bunny voicings.
Mel Blanc's natural voice, by the way, had a very pleasant mid-range
timbre. It's always seemed to me that the most flexible voices were
those that were not too deep and resonant. But I wouldn't call an aging
voice "grumpier" -- "mellow" is more like it.

Subject: What is Known about Harlow Wilcox?
Hi everyone. My love for old-time radio tends to come in various phases.
Right now I'm in the middle of a Fibber McGee and Molly phase. A lot seems
to be known about most of the actors on FM&M, but the research I've done
has turned up verty little about Harlow Wilcox. I was wondering if anyone
knows much about him, his life, and so on. What did he do before Fibber or
after Suspense? When was he born, when did he die? Any other info. Thanks
so much.

Subject: Dick Martin
Dick Martin ("Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In") died Saturday night in
[removed] at age 86. What's not in most of the obits--if any of them--was
the fact that he wrote for "Duffy's Tavern." For one week, anyway--or
so he always claimed, according to comedy writer Bob Schiller. I
don't know of other radio work Martin may have done.
