Subject: The Raggedy Man ?

This question just came to my attention and I'm kinda lost. Can anyone answer?
Martin

Somewhere around here I have a 78 of Riley reading The Raggedy Man and Little
Orphant Annie. It used to keep me up at night and out of the basement when I
was a child. I know it was recorded in 1912, but the copy I have, though
pretty damn old, doesn't seem as old as that. Anybody know if this record was
reissued on a 78, and when?

Subject: June Foray

Sean commented:

June Foray noted that she gets no royalties from the very popular DVD
collections of Rocky & Bullwinkle ("not that I need the money," sheadded)
but did seem a bit peeved at the Ward heirs for the way they are handling
things.

The reason is most likely because the contract(s) she signed with Ward's
production company never stated they would owe her royalties. Standard
contracts with actors (voice overs or screen actors) back in the 1950s and
1960s stated either a flat, one-time fee, or a small royalty for TV re-runs,
international or aborad, but when it comes to DVD releases, it all depends on
the contracts. It's cruel to blessed people like Foray who sit back and watch
as others make money off their recorded talents, but if they are not paying
her, then there is a legal way they don't have to.

Reminds me of a funny story about the woman (remaining nameless) who told
MGM/UA that if they were going to put a particular episode of TV's THE ADDAMS
FAMILY on DVD in the complete series box sets, she should be paid something
like half a million dollars for royalties because her father wrote a
30-second ditty that was sung by Carolyn Jones (Morticia Addams) featured in
one particular episode. It seems contracts back in the sixties assured her
father would receive a certain fee for every TV rerun, perpetual, and to this
date she (her father has since passed on) still collects a small check every
year for TV re-runs. But since the contracts back in the 1960s did not
stipulate DVDs, the studio had to contact her and get clearance. After she
demanded the HUGE sum, the studio did the next best thing (sadly to all
purists out there) - they deleted the 30 second sequence from the print so
when you buy the DVDs, and watch that particular episode, the musical number
sung by Morticia has been cut out.

Actually "O Superman" was a reference to the song by Laurie Anderson.

However, adult versions of OTR classics while interesting to contemplate I
suspect may viewed with disaproval by the [removed] as always, David Rogers

Thanks, Sean; hope to work with my [removed], pals out there, [removed]

As is usual for OTR conventions these days, the best parts were found at the
dinner tables and in the hallways, less so on the stage

I would respectfully dissent here. I have been FOTR-ing for about 15 years
now, and I think some of the shows I've seen in the last few - Peter
Fernandez'
SUSPENSE, Arthur Anderson's PLOT TO OVERTHROW CHRISTMAS, Anthony Tollin's
X-1 & GUNSMOKE, Gregg Oppenheimer's HARRY LIME, Bill Nadel's LIGHT OF THE
WORLD, and Jay Stern's 2000+ owed no apology to anyone.

Corrinne Orr ...She is hoping to return to Newark for
FOTR this year and perhaps once again share the stage with Simon Jones

It's always a treat to work with Corinne, in NYC or Newark! It was a blast
to flirt with her as my "Steve," with Simon as our blustery "Sir Graham," in
our PAUL TEMPLE MYSTERY.

I don't mean to slight all the fun I had with the not-so-famous people who
were hanging around but that might not be of as general interest to the
digest, but hi to Stuart, Rich, Gary, Walden, Barbara, Bobb, Bryan, Joy,
Penny, Anthony, and so on.

As fellow Listers and worthy FOTR performers, they're sure of interest here!

Best,
-Craig W.

Subject: re: O Superman

David Rogers queried why Superman is mentioned so rarely on the Digest.
Actually, I'm not sure it is rarely mentioned. I save each issue of the
Digest to my hard drive as a text file. A quick search revealed that of
the first 115 issues for 2008, 25 (or [removed]) mentioned Superman. For
all of 2007, 71 out of 367 issues ([removed]) mention Superman. Those are
not all discussions of the show, as the search function counts any
mention, included Ron's birth/death dates for actors, etc. It's a lot
less than some shows. [removed], the keyword "Suspense" is present in
156/367 ([removed]) of 2007 issues of the Digest. But Superman is more
prevalent than many other popular series. For example, the keyword
"Sanctum" is present in only 47/367 ([removed]) of 2007 issues. On average,
Superman is mentioned every five days in the Digest. I'm not saying I
disagree with David's implied assessment that it shouldn't be discussed
more. But I wanted to point out that it comes up fairly frequently on
the Digest--and perhaps more frequently than he realized.
