Dan Trigg just posted some nice comments;

I finished Hall's book a couple of weeks ago, and it made me feel like this
is a guy who really is good people.

God! I hope I come across that way. I know I can sometimes rankle folks with
my conservative views, and Charlie has to muzzle me, but I'd rather be
remembered for my sense of humor, and decency.

Better folks than myself have described how good it is, so the only thing I
will say is Hal, When can we expect the next one?

Actually, [removed] This book about the OTR years is sort of testing the
waters. If the reviews remain positive, and the sales continue, then I will
get back to the one I started about my later 25 years in TV. But as I said
before, the tone and slant will be quite different. Not because the medium
was different, but because I had a great deal of respect for the people I
worked with in Radio. I can't say the same for the idiots I encountered in
TV. :)

While I'm at it, I'd like to bring up a problem that is bothering me.

A fellow Digester (female, if you must know) who I have tremendous respect
for, has cautioned me against "plugging" the sale of my book too much here
in the Digest. For fear that it could sound too self serving, and "pushy".

I would never want to do that, HONEST! But by the same token, I have been
advised that one must continue to call attention to "How to order" the book,
because a) people are forgetful and don't write that info down. b) Need to
be reminded that it's available. c) maybe finally becoming interested in
getting a copy because of the positive reviews.

[removed] What's a fellow to do?

How 'bout this? Those Digesters who enjoy the book, and post some nice
[removed] about them including the info as to the web site address they
used to get their copy. It sure would save me mentioning it, and looking too
self serving.

[removed] here comes the address one more time. All those folks who have
e-mailed me and told me they plan to order the book, please copy this down
so you will have it at your finger tips when you finally remember to do it.
:)

The direct link to the order page is;

Harlan, you brought back a lot of memories of radio stars that went on to
be TV stars. Olan Soule was Barney Fife's songleader on The Andy Griffith
Show and was very perplexed as he tried valiantly to keep Barney's voice
from being heard when he sang.

A show I haven't heard mentioned too often on this digest is Family
Theatre. The show Flight From Home with Loretta Young and Don Ameche was one
of the most heartwarming stories I have ever heard. If someone listens to
this show and doesn't feel something in their heart something is wrong. It
originally aired [removed],1947. The prayer they say before entering their

If you have never heard a Family Theatre show before this would be a great

As good as the BIOGRAPHY segment is, an even better "piggyback" was AMC's
presentation last night of the 1966 DRAGNET TV movie, with its veritable
"Who's Who of OTR" in the cast: Webb, Virginia Gregg, Harry Bartell, Sam
Edwards, Olan Soule, Herb Ellis, Eddie Firestone and more. Readers of my
book, MY NAME'S FRIDAY, know my stance on this film - it's the best non-OTR
DRAGNET ever made. For once AMC has done something right: a lot of local TV
listings had this down as the Dan Aykroyd-Tom Hanks version. Hopefully
people who tuned in expecting that abomination stuck around to see DRAGNET
as it *should* be done. Dick Wolf will have a heckuva time topping it. I
write this not to rub it in, but to let you know it will repeat on AMC at
9:50am EST on February 19, so set your VCRs and DVD recorders!

No it's not Paul Harvey. His show dates from 1950. It's Alistair Cooke's
LETTER FROM AMERICA, which has been on the BBC since 1946 and which I now
listen to each week at the BBC's website. Even at 95 Cooke's commentary on
the news is as good as any and better than most.

I am another guy who grew up on TV and learned about OTR later. I remember

knew Bea Benederet from Petticoat Junction and, again, The Flintstones
(Betty Rubble). Now I listen to her all the time on the Jack Benny Show. I
understand the voice of Mr. Ed belongs to a radio cowboy--Rocky Lane--but I
have not been able to locate any of his shows. I always thought it would be
amusing to listen to one of those.

Subject: Those "singing" canaries

Hi, all. Very interesting to read about the various old radio progams that
featured singing canaries. I had never heard of these programs before.

While not a regular program featuring such birds, between 1922 and 1927,
radio station KHJ in Los Angeles, owned by the Los Angeles Times, had
singing canaries in its studio, and they soon became the station mascot.
The station became famous in the early years of radio having the canaries
as part of the station broadcasts. One newspaper story told about how KHJ
announcer and station manager John S. Daggett named the three canaries
"Kindness, Happiness and Joy", which was KHJ's slogan in their early years.
Publicity pictures were taken of Daggett at the KHJ microphone and the bird
cages nearby showing the three canaries. The story said that the canaries
could easily be heard on the air at station ID time over KHJ and during many
of their programs. Distant listeners trying to tune into the Los Angeles
station at night in the midwest and east were able to identify it as KHJ,
when they heard the canaries merrily chirping away over the airwaves. Of
course, different canaries were used over the years taking their places as
the three featured KHJ birds.

Hi all!

I don't know if this would qualify, and I'm sure it didn't have the same
host or announcer over the years. This was
a regular weekly broadcast of a church service.

>From late-December of 1924 until September of 1996, radio station
KPPC-1240/AM in Pasadena, California aired the 11 [removed] broadcast of the
Sunday morning service from Pasadena Presbyterian Church. That's roughly
71 years and 9 months. This was a hometown broadcast on a low-powered
station dating from radio's earliest days. KPPC transmitted with 50 watts
of power from 1924 to 1936, 100 watts from 1936 to 1985, and 250 watts in
its last years.

The only reason this weekly church broadcast ended is because the station
was sold and the owner turned in the license, so KPPC went off the air
forever and went dark.

I would appreciate any help in finding series/episodes of otr that focused on
poetry. I am familiar with "Poetic License" from the 30's--do any shows
survive? I believe Norman Corwin was involved, if memory and Dunning are
correct. What was the format of "Poetic License?" Also, according to Dunning,
Mr. Corwin was known as radio's poet. What were some of the other series
Corwin was involved with and what was the poetic connection? Were the shows
themselves done in various poetic formats; did they feature popular poetry of
the time, etc? Were there other series that featured entire scripts done in
poetry format? Perhaps CBS Radio Workshop, etc? For Elizabeth and others,
knowing early radio often focused on classical music and the arts in general,
was there also an early focus on poetry? If so, do any recordings survive
featuring great poets of the early 20th century? Perhaps a series like
"Information Please" featured a famous poet as a panel member. Just to hear
the voice of some of the greats would be wonderful, to hear them performing
their work would be thrilling. Randy Collins

Subject: Re: Mr. Boynton

The obit isn't clear on whether he played the role on
radio as well, but I'm sure other people on the list
would know. I'm only familiar with Jeff Chandler's
portrayal of Boynton; and since I'm at work, I can't
check Dunning to find out more about Rockwell.

I am listening to some mid-1950s "Our Miss Brooks" radio episodes now (it ran
until 1957, one season later than the TV show) and Rockwell did, indeed,
assume the role of Mr. Boynton later in the show's run.

Incidentally, two questions about the show that I have always heard: 1) I
heard in the annual Christmas Show, Jeff Chandler always kissed his script
(in the scene where he's supposed to kiss Connie under the mistletoe), but
Robert Rockwell always kissed Eve Arden on the cheek; 2) Episodes from the
radio show's last season were done live and are hard to find now. Any truth
to these?
