Subject: OTR poker
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Years ago at an FOTR conference here in NJ, OTR fan & scriptwriter and Michael
Giorgio and I tried
devising an OTR variety of poker. It would play the same way as conventional
poker except with one
catch: players need to say what their hands are by incorporating OTR-variants
of the regular names
of the cards. Failure to do so means a player would be required to "sweeten
the pot," by throwing in
another nickel or dime or whatever the predetermined amount is [hey, I can
pnly afford to play nickel-dime
ante anyway]. For example, "I have a full house: Easy Aces over
Six-Shooters."

Here's what Michael and I have so far. We need help in naming the missing
tricks and suits:
For the tricks: A = "Easy Aces"; K = "Sky King" (or "Yukon King"); Q = "Ellery
Queen"; J =
"Jack Benny" (or "Jack Armstrong"; conceivably: "I jave a pair of jacks, a
Benny and an
Armstrong"); 8 = "Eight-to-the-Bar" (as in the Andrews Sisters' ranch; do
desire something less
clunky-sounding tho'); 7 = "Sunday Nights at Seven"; 6 = "Six Shooter"; 3 =
"Three Skeleton Key."
As you can see, we still need names for cards 2 (or deuce), 4, 5, 9, & 10.

Similarly, two of the suits are called "Sam Spades" & "Richard Diamonds." We
still need names for the
Hearts and the Clubs ("Cliquot Club" just doesn't do it for me).

In event Charlie disallows further discussion of this topic, please contact me
off-list, & I'll compress
everything into a single follow-up posting.

Thanks in advance from the ether,

Derek Tague

Derek, what an odd coincidence:

I went walking through the Billy Rose Library at about 7:45, Thursday
night, to see if my old associate John Cocci was around--I had just
wound up with an extra ticket for DESSA ROSE, next door, at the Vivian
[removed] John (who many of you wil know as a long time film
historian) WAS there, but, alas, couldn't go. (Derek, I'd say too bad
you couldn't get the ticket, but the play wound up being pretty
dreadful--a great Rachel York (a Broadway muicals vet, she played Lucy
in that TV movie, a few years ago), but DESSA ROSE was sort of like
ROOTS, as written by MAD MAGAZINE, with an unhealthy, ACT II rip-off of
the terrific James Garner-Louis Gossett flick, SKIN [removed])

Joe Bolton WAS a radio announcer, for nearly twenty years, beginning I
gues, at some point. in the 1930s. A newspaper article I have from 1972
says that he became a baseball announcer for WOR in the 1930s and in
1937, "actually appeared in a movie with Babe Ruth." Another reference
says that he spent time as an executive producer of specal events for
the Office of War Infomation, and also worked at New York's WNEW. Bolton
went to work for WPIX TV in 1948, as a newsman, or news reader. He later
became the "Tastee Cake Weatherman." (Bolton wound up taking the
weatherman stuff VERY serously. His daughter once told me that he
studied ASSIDUOUSLY, went to meteorology conferences, and once wrote a
book, for adults, on meteorology (a copy of which, I picked up, a few
years ago). This was all before Bolton became "Officer" Joe Bolton in
those halcyon days of WPIX/Channel 11, showing the Little Rascals, and
the the 3 Stooges [removed]

Here's an intresing tidbit--

INTO the 1960s, Joe Bolton would don suit and tie to do an afternoon
news broadcast, SIMULTAENOUS to his appearing as a kid-shows host.

(And, the irony here: some of the information I quoted above is from a
few newspaper articles read in the "Joe Bolton" clippings file, one
year ago--

I'm not sure, but I guess the interview on "Fresh Air" was to publicize the
release of the CD "Los Super 7: I Heard It on the X," more than anything
else ... or to give the book new life, because the book is not new -- it was
published in 1987 by Texas Monthly Press, Inc., Austin, Tex. It is
interesting to any of us who grew up in the 1950s listening to Wolfman Jack
and Rev. Ike and on and on and on. I first read of Dr. Brinkley in college
from a book that came out in 1960 by Gerald Carson, "The Roguish World of
Doctor Brinkley," from Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York.

Dan Dunfee asked about the flamethrowers from Mexico.
Recommended reading: Border Radio by Fowler and Crawford. It's a very
enlightening look at this AM radio niche with lots of excellent vignettes.

Subject: WOTW call letters

Derek Tague wondered (Digest 2005:127) if there is a radio station with
the call letters WOTW (as in "War of the Worlds"), and if anyone
maintains a call letter database.

Thanks to your tax dollars, the FCC maintains such a database.

AM and FM stations can be searched (separately) by frequency, call sign,
or location at [removed]. My search did not return
any current station WOTW.

I believe I have seen other websites with their own front ends to this
database. They might be more user-friendly.

This database appears to have only current information.

The Media Bureau, which oversees broadcasters, has a number of Public
Database Files at [removed], including a
file called [removed], which has some history in a delimited
file. (Not sure if any of this history pertains to the OTR era. You'll
want to look at
[removed] to help
you make sense of this history file.)

It appears that WOTW and WOTW-FM have been assigned to stations in
recent years.

For example, a station at 900 kHz in Nashua, NH, now known as WSNH, was
known as WOTW from 07/23/2002 until 08/04/2003. Before that it was WMVU
since at least 09/14/1987.
[removed]
ility_id=41256&Callsign=WSNH

Also in Nashua, there is a record of an FM station whose (construction?)
permit was cancelled. It was to be WOTW-FM.
[removed]
ity_id=41435

It thus appears that WOTW and WOTW-FM are now available should anyone
think an all-OTR, all-the-time format might be viable. As to WOTR, it's
on the FM band at [removed] MHz in Lost Creek, WV. KOTR serves Hollister,
CA, on [removed] FM.

Subject: Faulty research

A few days ago in the birth/death list I had Greta Garbo listed as
appearing on "Hollywood Hotel." Someone questioned it because of her
well know eccentricities. That got me thinking, he way well be right. I
researched it again and lo and behold . . . he was right. The hostess
of "Hollywood Hotel" was Louella Parsons at her most powerful. As the
article that I read stated, "The biggest celebrities in America came
when "invited," with Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, and Greta Garbo
among the few to ignore Parsons's call."

I misread the article, for that I apologize. Garbo has since been
dropped from my list until I can find a radio show that she has
appeared on. Does anyone know of any?

Derek Tague, coming out of the ether, asked if there is a radio station with
call letters WOTW.
Oh, where is "Whites Radio Log" when we need it?

A net search showed the following -

WOTW, Nashua NH 900 KC News and Talk.
and, oddly enough
WOTX, Concord NH [removed] Country

Different towns, area codes, addresses, phone numbers, so perhaps not related.

Perverse as Derek is, I suppose he doesn't really want to know if there is a
KOTW. Narrow-mindedness if I ever heard it. There is a firm called KOTW,
Inc. which advertises technical "video solutions" which include video
streaming on the Internet.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I recently purchased an mp3 collection of Inner Sanctum episodes. On the
first disc, there is an episode that is listed as an AFRS version of the
4/17/45 story, THE JUDAS CLOCK. However, upon listening to the episode, it
appears to be a later retelling of the same story. The episode is introduced
by the "host" in the same manner as the episodes were introduced after the
departure of Raymond Edward Johnson. But the "host" doesn't sound quite like
Paul McGrath, but maybe it is the speed of the source material. The star of
this episode is Berry Kruger. The announcer announces the story as being "The
Judas Clock", but the "host" indicates that the name of the story is "The
Cleopaetra Clock". Indeed, the clock is referred to throughout the story as
the Cleopaetra Clock. I have referrenced my copy of the Inner Sanctum book,
as well as the online log on the OTR webpage, but can't find where the episode
was repeated or a title that might be the story retitled. Of course, I could
have overlooked the episode in both the logs. Is this an Inner Sanctum
episode, or is it a doctored version of the script from a different series?

Thanks in advance.

Bob
