Subject: Re: Superman serial

This isn't exactly on-topic for this forum, and I apologize, but since the
matter was raised here, I thought I should chime in. Martin Grams, Jr. -
my favorite OTR author and a good friend - wrote:

 >The (Superman) serial was supposedly destroyed decades ago when the TV
 >Superman series became popular. They falsely advertised the show of
 >featuring George Reeves, the first man to portray Superman on the screen
 >when in fact, that was false. Kirk (Alyn) played the man in tights for two
 >serials and somehow an attempt was made to destroy the prints to prevent the
 >serials from being featured in the theaters while the TV series remained
 >popular.

I've never heard any of this before. I do know that the contract between
Columbia Pictures (producers of the serial) and National Comics (owners of
Superman) specifically forbade the serials' release to television. I also
believe there was a clause that limited Columbia's distribution rights, and
possibly even ownership (just as there was for Warner Brothers' 1954
DRAGNET theatrical feature - which is why Universal now owns it). Ordering
the serial to be destroyed sounds a bit extreme - I'd like to know the
exact source for this.

Nor have I, in over a quarter-century of research into the SUPERMAN TV
series, ever seen any publicity or advertisements claiming that George
Reeves was the first live-action Man of Steel. I can't speak for a few
misguided journalists, but there was no concerted effort by National Comics
to suppress knowledge of Kirk Alyn's work in the role. Advertising for the
Reeves film "Superman and the Mole Men" (1951) called it the character's
"first full-length feature adventure" - which it certainly was. That was
as far as it went.

As I recall, another OTR favorite, MGM comedy/jazz singer Virginia O'Brien
(aka "Miss Red Hot

While the web site is still very much under construction, you can go to
this page and enter the submission that you want the information on the WLW
set. It is very good, by the way. I bought mine years ago at the Cincinnati
Historical Museum, but not sure they are selling it anymore.

If you don't get a response, let me know. I might be able to just ask Mike
Martini about it. He has in the past been a contributor to this page, but
he is working pretty constantly and not sure he is reading this as often.

Subject: Why Don't We Do This More Often?

Hi--

Anyone know of an available recording of Peggy Lee with the Benny Goodman
Orchestra of "Why Don't We Do This More Often?", recorded November 7, 1941
on Mutual?

I'm actually also looking for anyone else's recordings of that song. For
example, I know there's an Andrews Sisters recording of it as well, with Vic
Schoen's orchestra, recorded [removed], but I don't know the network.

Thanks :)

All My Best,
Jeffrey

So begins my favorite Old-Time Radio show of all time -- the now
world-infamous "Panic Broadcast" of 1938. :)

Does anyone know whether there is any station planning to rebroadcast
it here in the New Jersey area this Halloween (and let's all PLEASE pray
that people have become more sophisticated in their discernments since
1938!) ??? :/

I believe that Bobby Troup and Julie London were husband and wife. That
being stated, did anyone else notice in the 10-18 births/deaths segment that
Bobby Troup was born on 10-18-18 and Julie London died on 10-18-2000? One
sometimes has to wonder about significance of such occurrences. Sort of
like, Abe Lincoln having a secretary named Kennedy and John Kennedy having a
secretary named Lincoln. At this time of year, one might go so far as to
call it spooky.
