Subject: Macabre
I got a few new shows to listen to on Halloween. Thats new as in new to me.
One of them is a short lived show called Macabre. I could not find anything
about it in
John Dunning's ON THE AIR. However, Dunning does include DARK FANTASY which
originated right here in Oklahoma City either. The opeing in MACABRE refers
to "The Far East Network". Can someone tell me more about this show like
where it came from?

Subject: TV Land CBS Tribute
In response to Mark Cuccia's question about whether TV Land's 1975 lineup
re-creation would air episodes from the same night, the answer is no.
Looking at the TV Land website, the schedule for the re-creation is as
follows (note: airdates are from
[removed] and may not necessarily
be correct):
8:00pm All in the Family #114 "Archie The Hero" (29 Sep 75)
8:30pm The Jeffersons #001 "A Friend in Need" (18 Jan 75)
9:00pm Mary Tyler Moore #127 "Chuckles Bites the Dust" (25 Oct 75)
9:30pm Bob Newhart #089 "Carol at 6:01" (10 Jan 76)
10:00pm Carol Burnett & Friends #002 "Went With the Wind"
10:30pm Carol Burnett & Friends #611 "Nora Desmond/ F. Lee Bunny/ the
Oldest Man"
Upon further research, I have found out that this is not a faithful
recreation of the lineup. According to Tim Brooks' "Complete Directory to
Prime Time Network TV Shows", from September 1975 to September 1976 "All in
the Family" was aired on Mondays at 9:00pm. "The Jeffersons" held the
8:00pm Saturday slot, and the sitcom "Doc" was at 8:30pm. In addition, it
seems that "The Carol Burnett Show" will not be aired in its original
one-hour form, but in 2 chopped-up half-hour "Carol Burnett & Friends"
syndicated versions.

Subject: Lights Out Revival
I just listened to a "new" lights out story with Boris Karloff on Halloween.
I never heard this one before called "Death Robbery" which was on Light Out
Revival series long after Obler left. Karloff as usual did his bang up good
job at acting ghoulish but there was one thing that bothered me in this
Frankenstein-esq story. The theme music for this Light Out revival series
didn't seem to fit LIGHTS OUT! The opening Music, Commercial break, and
Closing Music outside the story wasn't menancing at all but more like
something you hear on the Great Gildersleeve or something in that vein.
Aside from that it made good Halloween listening.

I've been tring to find an episode I heard a few years ago on CBSRMT. I
heard it on Himan Brown's 1998 revival late one night. I don't remember the
title or the star but I remember toward the end it concerned Priest or
someone going to a crypt or masoleum (sic) and performing an exorcism to
cast out or away a demon. Thats not much to go on but its all I can remember
andt it was definitely heard on 1998 revival with Himan Brown as host.

Subject: Frankie Remley/Elliott Lewis
Mike Mackey mentioned--just between him, us and the lamppost--this:
Later, over legal and/or financial issues, it was decided to change the
Frankie character's name. What did they change it to? Well, "Elliot Lewis",
of course. So, instead of Remley playing Remley, it was Lewis playing Remley
and, finally, Lewis playing Lewis.
I've often wondered whether the change from "Frankie Remley" to "Elliott
Lewis" wasn't facilitated by Phil Harris's departure from the Benny program
at the end of the 1951-52 season. I have a November 23, 1952 broadcast
("Chloe the Golddigger") of the Harris-Faye show and they refer to the
character as "Elliott Lewis" on that show.

Subject: Re: FOTR 2003 revisited
I have been reading some of the FOTR Convention attendee's positive comments
about how much they enjoyed this years activities. Then I realized that I
may be the only "Digest" subscriber with an OTR performing background who
was an invited guest, and thought that maybe I should add a comment or two
from the Actors perspective.
>From all that I observed, the Convention was a rousing success, and a good
time was had by all. I know I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and in addition to
performing and appearing on panel discussions, one of the highlights for me
was seeing (and working with) fellow "Child Actors" that I hadn't seen in
skaty eight years. I mean a lonnnnng time ago.
I went to High School with Bobby Ramsen (the Comedian), and he hasn't aged a
day. We hadn't seen each other for over 50 years. I'm only sorry he didn't
get to perform some of his Night Club act.
Then another treat was seeing Larry Robinson again. Larry and I are about
the same age, and he and I competed against each other for many Kids roles
on Radio. (Again, over 50 years ago). Watching Larry in some of the
recreations (particularly "X Minus one") further demonstrated what a classy
and talented actor he is.
Of course, I got to see many other of my contemporaries who often get
invited to these conventions, and it's always fun to work with them again.
Like the inimitable Pat Hosley, the indestructible Arthur Anderson (a fellow
"Let's Pretender"), the irresistible Rosemary Rice, and the irritatable Bob
Hastings (Just kidding). As well as super nice people from those OTR days,
that, while we never worked together prior to these Convention recreations,
have become new found friends. Guys like Will Hutchins, Cliff Carpenter, and
Jimmy Lydon.
I would like to also mention OTR Hobby icons like Gary Yoggy and Anthony
Tolin who did their usually good job Directing some of the recreations. (You
realize of course, if you don't say something nice about the "Directors" ,
one might not get cast in next years recreations). And then too, panel
moderators Mitch Weisberg and Derek Tague need to be singled out for their
ability to handle zany performers.
Earlier, I mentioned that seeing old acting buddies was definitely one of
the Convention Highlights for me. There were two other major highlights. One
being able to meet fellow Digest Subscribers and put faces to names. (What a
classy group of people). And of course, the exception to the rule, Curley
Summers. However, he even bought me a drink, so I guess he's a class act
also. And kudo's of course to Jay Hickerson, (and all his assistants) who
worked so hard to make this years Convention one of the best, (and biggest),
as far as attendance goes.)
But I'm saving the "biggie" highlight for last. I was knocked for a loop
when they were passing out the Awards following the Saturday Night Banquet.
(Incidentally, the food was quite good this year).
Bob Hastings was asked to present the Florence Williams Award, and guess who
received that signal honor. I wish to thank everyone, and anyone, who voted
to bestow that honor on me. (Or do they just pull a name out of a hat).
Naw!!! The beautiful wall plaque trophy had a golden microphone mounted
prominently on the face, and the inscription was already engraved, so they
must have known ahead of time. To the selection committee, a heartfelt
"Thank You".
The next morning, (after the shock wore off) I was on an OTR panel following
Sunday Brunch, and publicly stated that I was even more in awe when I become
this years recipient, considering the illustrious list of OTR personalities
that won in previous years. A veritable Who's Who of OTR legends, like
Raymond Johnson, Jackson Beck, Peg Lynch, Lon Clark, Ezra Stone, Dwight
Weist, Fred Foy, Sybil Trent, Dick Beals, and many more OTR luminaries.
Let's [removed] How many did I name. Oh yeah! 9 biggies. Then I looked further
down the list of former "OTR Greats" and saw Bob Hastings name.
Oh well! 9 out of 10 ain't bad. :)
Love to all, and a heartfelt thanks to those responsible.

I assume that stands for "Comic Book" something or other.
There is also an article about Jugheads folly. This is about an
Archie series comic book that portrays Jughead in an Elvis Presley image
on the front cover.

The latest Standard Catalog Of Comic Books lists the book value at

Hmmmm! Maybe I should have asked to be paid in ARCHIE COMIC BOOKS back then.
But if memory serves me right, Elvis erupted on the scene long after I
stopped playing "Jughead". Back then, the Bobby Soxer idol was Sinatra. They
say "Timing is Everything in Life". Life's a B---H when one is stuck having

I have always had a special fondness for the 31 October holiday. When I
was much younger, and shortly before we bought our first LP phonograph,
my father bought me a record album entitled Halloween, which featured a
tale by Lionel Barrymore. The album had a spooky (for a child) cover
illustration, and a fairly innocuous story. At the very end, Barrymore
said of the lead character in the tale he told, "... and later he went on
to become the mayor of the town."
"Mayor of the Town," for those who are unfamiliar with it, was an OTR
program starring Lionel Barrymore.

I'll toss out a speculation: I can't recall where I read this years ago ([removed] Liebling?), but a

unable to file a story and was fired. Possibly this account, evolving over the years, became

Subject: Arthur Godfrey
In regard to Dave Walter's comments regarding Arthur Godfrey I will put
my comments in. I joined the CBS engineering staff in New York in
December of 1944. At that time when I was "breaking in" I was assigned at
one point to the New York standby studio for Godfrey's early morning
local shows. (Joe Travis was the regular engineer. He had been with CBS
since it's inception in the Paramount Theater Building)). Arthur was
doing two morning local record shows, one for WJSV and another for WABC
(later becoming WCBS). An engineer would be assigned to each location,
along with a stack of records (78's). The programs for both stations
would originate from wherever he would show up, using the round robin
portion of the network, which was not in use that early in the morning.
WJSV, which was founded by James S. Vance, was a CBS affiliate and
usually handled Washington originations. Our CBS news bureau was
headquartered in their facility. Consequently there was a close tie.
Later CBS built it's own facility at 2020 M Street and WJSV became WTOP,
which was tied to a Washington newspaper, was still the affiliate. While
I was working at CBS Hollywood, the morning hour long network Godfrey
show started, which was broken into four fifteen segments. Bob Caumont
was the long time engineer on that show. I did vacation relief on it when
I first returned to CBS-New York from CBS-Hollywood, which I enjoyed. I
found Arthur to be friendly and a joy to work with. Also he had a great
sense of humor and a wonderful personality!
