Subject: The Adventures of Rodney Kilcup

I've been collecting OTR for 40 years now and I' lucky enough to make the
bulk of my living as a radio actor/director/writer and producer. Back in 1980
I was cast in a University of Washington produced detective serial called
The Adventures of Rodney Kilcup and its sequal The New Adventures of Rodney
Kilcup. Somehow these shows got out and a few years ago I was sent one of the
15 minute episodes in the mail. My question is does anyone know if there are
more then one of the shows floating around out there and how I can get my ego
driven hands on copies? You can contact me off line since these shows aren't
truly OTR
Thanks

Thanks to all those commenting, off- and on-line, re my question
about Norman Corwin's thoughts on Himan Brown's CBS Radio Mystery
Theater. I can confirm Brown's lack of nostalgia about OTR based
on my visit with him in 1975. And though I can understand Mr.
Corwin's statement about the two of them being so busy with their
own responsibilities that they didn't have time to listen to
what others were doing, it seems that would apply to those days
in the '30s and '40s. Even so, wouldn't Mr. Brown have listened
to Corwin's blockbuster shows (On a Note of Triumph, et al.)?
Likewise, it seems as if professional creative curiosity, given
all the publicity that came with its premiere in 1974, would have
prompted Mr. Corwin to catch at least a few of the CBSRMT shows.

Subject: Jim Hsrmon and OTR

Jim Kitchen observed the value of Jim Harmon's /The Great Radio Heroes,/
which I believe to be the watershed book on OTR. Those of us who lived
during the heyday of OTR, it was a fantastic and poignant nostalgia trip.
OTR was after that when I learned that some recordings of OTR shows
existed.
Jim also write /Jim Harmon's Nostalgia Catalog,/ which had even more
references to OTR, with an emphasis on radio premiums. The memories it
evoked were both poignant and fond.
Without Jim's books, I never would have been motivated to research my
favorite radio hero, Captain Midnight.
A few years ago, Jim revised/updated /The Great Radio Heroes,/ with new
chapters on things like the Native American heroes and sidekicks on OTR.
It was published by McFarland.
Jim edited several books in the It's That Time Again series of OTR-based
short stories for Bear Manor, and I cannot think of a better choice of
editors.
Jim Harmon.

Subject: Re: First Rose Bowl radio broadcast

Is anyone able to verify that the first Rose Bowl radio
broadcast was in January 1, 1923 over KHJ (that is first
local broadcast, not first national broadcast)? I see
this factoid all over the internet, but no source for the
information.

The Los Angeles Times reports that KHJ did indeed broadcast play-by-play of
the game on that date.

Here is a link to the relevant excerpts from the newspaper: part of the Jan 1
radio schedule and the first few paragraphs of the lengthy January 2 radio
column which mentions the broadcast only in passing.

Judging by the Times coverage, KHJ had begun broadcasting play-by-play of
local football games by the fall of '22.

I still sell regular audio CDs. I've been converting all my reel to
reel tapes to audio CDs. Most of the programs came from trades I made
with other collectors back in the 1970's on reel to reel tape. A good
number came from programs that I recorded my self between 1952 and
the late 1950's. And a lot more have come from transcription disc
that I purchased and have been transferring over the last 10 years.
