My First AFRA Meeting
There I was, 1943, 12 years old, in a meeting room of Chicago's Morrison
Hotel, hobnobbing with the Windy City's top radio's stars. A few I had
worked with, many I recognized from their pictures published in the
Leonard Dubkin Chicago Talent Directory, and the rest from their
distinctive voices when they rose to speak. Our annual
party/entertainment event, AFRA ANTICS, featured the many 'other' talents
of these exceptional broadcasters.
Mike Wallace's family business was the same as mine--we had met on an
earlier occasion, so I felt 'comfortable' sitting next to him. The
subject of television came up--we 'knew' Chicago was going to be the
broadcast center for television transmission, as we were centrally
located between New York and Los Angeles. Mike's completion is just
awful, and at one point of the group discussion, he leaned over and
whispered in my ear, "Singer--they'll NEVER put this face on television."

Sandy Signer's career started at the age of 12, as a child actor in
Chicago, on radio's kid/adventure shows. His disc jockey work took him
back to Chicago, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Dallas, etc. He's been in
broadcasting 59 years, and so, in his own words, "never 'worked' a
day of my life."
