Actually, Frank was partly correct. THIS IS THE ARMY originated
as a Broadway fundraising show directed by Sergeant Ezra Stone
(of Henry Aldrich fame) which went on a national tour before
it was adapted as a Warner Brothers' film.

The original Broadway production premiered July 4, 1942, while
the Warner Brothers film version was released in 1943. The
opening-night cast included Sgt. Irving Berlin, Burl Ives,
Pvt. Gary Merrill, William Roerick, Sgt. Ezra Stone and Philip
Truex. I recall that future-Superman George Reeves was also
in the cast of THIS IS THE ARMY, but I'm not sure if he was in
the original Broadway cast or the later national tour (or both).

It was a stage revue (1942) before it was made into a
movie.

Back in 1982, I was giving a speech for our men's club on old time radio
and TV. So I put together a 2 hour tape with excerpts from some radio shows
and a lot of excerpts from TV shows.

In 1969, I had purchased a Video Tape Recorder and like I had done with
radio, started taping a lot of TV shows of the late 60's and 70's.

I just found this tape the other day and decided to put it to DVD. It is
similar to my History of Radio CD, except it deals with early TV. I'll be
bringing 7 copies with me to Cincinnati. Stop by and take a look. Although
this is a radio convention, I put a lot of radio stars who were just
starting on TV on this video.

You're right, Conrad, but "This is the Army" began life as a morale-boosting
Broadway musical revue. It opened on July 4, 1942 and - to give this an
undeniable radio connection - was directed by 24-year-old
actor/director/soldier Ezra Stone.

The National Archives has a fascinating series of pages detailing the
creation and run of the show, as well as information about the 1943 film it
inspired, at:

Subject: Fibber McGee and Molly's Address

There's a lot of confusion, I think intended by the Jordans and Don Quinn,
about our friends in Wistful Vista.
Fibber and Molly lived in the town of Wistful Vista. They lived at 79
Wistful Vista, but here comes the tricky part. Their house was located at
the corner of 14th and Oak. The address for everything in Wistful Vista
was the corner of 14th and Oak.

So if you wanted to send them a letter, you'd send it to them c/o 79
Wistful Vista. If you wanted to visit them, you'd board the bus at the
corner of 14th and Oak and get off at the corner of 14th and Oak. When you
see the house with a 79 on the front, that's them.
