Subject: Rege Cordic

Rege Cordic went to California after having made a name for himself at KDKA
in the early 1960s. I can't remember the circumstances, as to how or why
I called him, but after an earthquake in the early 1990s in California, I
did a phoner with him for KQV-AM, also in Pittsburgh, about having been in
the quake. At any rate, I'm not sure how long he was on the air at KNX,
but his time at KDKA is still legendary in the Pittsburgh market.

There has been a recent flurry of activity about Arnold Stang. Well, if all
goes well and my interpretartions of the schedule is correct, you will get to
see him on the Game Show Network (GSN) at 3:30 [removed] EST on March 16. He will
be the mystery guest on "What's My Line."

Fred Allen has been a panelist most nights for the past few weeks, so any
night you will get to see him. He is scheduled to be the mystery guest on the
20th, from 7/17/55, so obviously he will have a susbtitute in his place on
the panel that night!

Thanks to the person who noted in the Digest that Allen was going to be a
panelist on What's My Line on GSN a few weeks ago. Thanks to a digital video
recorder, I don't have to stay up for the shows!

Subject: The Shadow Opening

      Hi everyone,
Here's a question about the opening of The
Shadow broadcasts during the Orson Welles run that
I've always meant to ask about. I've heard that the
opening was really done by Frank Readick, and not
Orson. While I believe the folks who've told me that,
I've just never been able to hear it myself. To me, it
sounds just like Welles.
Is that really Readick? And, if so, why did
he do the opening? My guess would be that Welles just
couldn't get the laugh down right? Sorry if this
seems like a dumb question, but it's always been
something I've wondered about.
Ok, that's my 2 cents worth. I hope you all
have a great week as we inch closer to Spring!

Xm and Sirius Satellite radio are rumored to be
discussing merging, but they deny it publicly.

The oldtime radio tribute PBS did about 25 years ago
was called
"The Good Old Days of Radio" and was about an hour or
two. I have the audio taped off of TV back in 1979.

After mentioning the youth otr oriented book on tape, _Who Was That Masked
Man, Anyway_ by Avi, someone from the Digest suggested another title of his,
_Don't You Know There's a War on?_ It takes place in l943 and mainly
mentions in passing the different shows the twelve year old boy listens to
(Sky King, etc) and about his going to the movies every Sat. morning for a
serial. Two questions:

At one point he says to a friend, "Don't be such an abercrombie." Is this an
OTR reference? I haven't been able to locate a definition for this. The boy
(12) has a younger sister who rushes home from school to listen to soap
operas. "My Gal Sunday" and "The Romance of Helen Trent" are mentioned. At
one point, the sister offers her brother and idea as a solution to a problem
of his that she says she got from listening to the soaps. Did kids that
young listen to them?

In this case the mother was working at a defense plant during the day--their
dad was away in the war.

Subject: Satellite radio

On a recent trip I rented a car that had XM radio as an added feature (which
I wasn't aware of until I drove away). It was my first exposure to
satellite radio.

There are lots of channels and some truly great stuff. I can't begin to
enumerate it all but I loved the oldies channel (with replays of shows like
The Whistler, My Favorite Husband, Suspense, etc.), as well as music
channels for the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, country music with tunes by original
artists I hadn't heard in forever and CNN to keep one informed, too.

If you order XM service at home or for your personal car, it doesn't come
cheap. But my biggest hangup is over the constant barrage of advertising
there. They may claim it's ad-free, I'm not sure, but there is
self-promotion to gut-wrenching excess. It made me think of the countless
upcoming TV shows the networks tout every time they have a commercial break.
And on the country music channel, in addition to the ads, I routinely heard
the sounds of a draft beer being poured as the host between tunes gleefully
acknowledged someone who emailed him with a request for a song, saying
"let's pour that gal another beer" or, occasionally, "let's give Joe a cup
of coffee." Then the long-playing gurgling of filling the mug or glass
followed. It happened several times every hour. It got boring in a hurry
and, having detected an ongoing pattern, I soon switched to another channel
for some relief.

You would think if the service costs such a pricey sum one really would get
it advertising-free. That would seem to be a major selling point instead of
the frequency of garbage between selections. Perhaps some other service
omits that bombardment of self-promotion. XM's handicap will prevent me
from making an investment for the moment -- until the unnecessary chatter on
favorite channels and repetitious sound effects subside.

Have often wondered what it was like listening to old time radio. I was born
in 1944 but don't ever remember the family sitting around the radio
listening to any shows. Would like to know if families back then listened to
all the prime time radio shows sometimes or just listened to a show from
time to time?
Would like to know what listeners were doing while listening to

10-20-1889 - Margaret Dumont - Brooklyn, NY - d. 3-6-1965
actress: "Paramount Movie Parade"

According to Simon Louvish's excellent tome on the Marx Brothers, entitled
"Monkey Business," Ms. Dumont's birth year is actually 1882 - the information
found by a geneological researcher assisting the author. The date and
birthplace are otherwise correct.

Mr. Louvish also effectively demolishes the legend - perpetuated by Groucho,
[removed] - that Ms. Dumont had no sense of humor and never understood the
brothers' jokes. I strongly recommend this book to all Marx fans.

Cotesworth Castle?

This story was titled "The Case Of The Transplanted Castle"
(January 6 to March 3, 1941; 9 half hour Chapters and later
redone(January 9 to February 1, 1951; 18 fifteen minute
episodes)

Mansion type story where a letter brought the trio to Cotesworth
Castle: "It's an old English Castle transplanted to the hills in
back of Hollywood, stone for stone. The trouble is, the big
organ in the chapel plays all by itself and every time it plays
'Brahms Lullaby' something horrible happens. I will probably be
dead before you arrive but do what you can for the rest of the
household."

And in this ancient castle, brought to the top of Stone Mountain
from England, prowls a killer; apparently a madman; for
sometimes he stands over people's beds and screams; and
sometimes he walks the great halls in mailed armour; and
sometimes he wanders vaguely, puzzled with hands out before him
as though lost and groping. But always he kills and always he
carries away the body. And when he prowls the organ in the
castle's chapel plays "Brahms Lullaby". There is no one at the
console of the organ and still it plays.

Best,
James

familiar, but I can't understand why. Was he the

Which ones?
