When life seems unfair, everyone is on my case, and it seems I just can't take
much more, I go "back in time." It's easy if you know the secret. Don't tell
anyone but I have this "Way Back Machine." I take the key, push it in the
slot and away I go.
I've been to Pine Ridge where Lum, Abner and myself stumble from one
misadventure to another. I spent a day with the Kingfish and Andy Brown and
we didn't listen to Amos and got up to our necks in trouble. When I'm with
Richard Diamond or Philip Marlow I'm amazed how we can get whacked on the
head and still get the job done.
That is what I do when I want to get away.

You can sometimes find McFarland books remaindered at

so you don't even have to know the title or author to search for McFarland
(or Vestal or any other speciality publisher's) books.

And what about Ed Sullivan and Jack Paar? ( Both started on the radio by
the way, but we remember them mainly from television.)
This was done by Paar for his GOOD FRIEND Sullivan.
This generated enuf publicity to save Sullivan's show from the network axe.
I was there.

Unfamiliar with her fate, but Carole Richards main claim to fame (other than
some terriffic duets with Bing Crosby "Sunshine Cake," "Silver Bells,"
[removed]) is that she was very prolific at lending her voice for talented
dancers with weak vocal chords. She dubbed many of Cyd Charisse's big hits
at MGM including "Silk Stockings," "It's Always Fair Weather" and
"Brigadoon."

Subject: Johnny Dollar
I've been listening to Johnny Dollar sequentially and have been amused at
the number of script references to long-time Dollar writer Jack Johnstone in
the scripts, starting with Bob Bailey and ending with Mandel Kramer (who is
almost as good as Bob Bailey IMHO). The opportunity was provided when
Johnny's 'radio program' written by Johnstone became part of his personna,
making him more of a celebrity in the series. In addition to Jack
Johnstone references there was an occasional character who appeared as Jack
Johnstone's brother. How common was this in general?
Listening to the cast lists of the NY Mandel Kramer Dollar shows is like a
who's who of daytime TV soap operas produced in NY.
I knew of Kramer, Santos Ortega, Larry Haines, William Redfield, Ivor
Francis, and many other Dollar actors from their TV soap roles. (Ivor
Francis was the father of a very popular soap actress, Genie Francis, whose
character was Laura on General Hospital) Mandel Kramer was on my favorite
soap, "Edge of Night" for 20 years so it's been fun hearing him on the
Dollar shows. He was already on "Edge of Night", starting in 1959, when he
took over the Dollar role.
However, I did miss the LA actors whose characters were explained away in
the NY shows (retired, transferred, etc.) and of course I dearly missed
Harry Bartell.

Yes. The second person listed in each feud was a newspaper columnist.

Subject: John Archer's SHADOW episodes
As many of you know, I tracked down John Archer nearly 20 years ago and was
the first OTR hobbiest to talk with him about his radio and Hollywood career.
John went on to recreate his radio role of The Shadow many times at the
annual FOTR, SPERDVAC and REPS conventions. John loved attending at OTR
conventions and was especially active in REPS.
I've long been frustrated that the two known surviving SHADOW episodes
starring John Archer are in less than desirable sound quality. Does anyone
know who owns the original transcription discs for March 25, 1945: "The
Destroyer" and April 8, 1945: "The Little Man Who Wasn't There"? I'd sure
like to optain copies in better sound quality, and I'm sure that a number of
John's other friends and fans would too.
And of course, we'd also appreciate knowing of any other surviving SHADOWS
starring John Archer from the 1944-45 [removed] Tollin

I remember well the original Sambo's in Santa Barbara when I was a
little boy. It had paintings of Little Black Sambo on its walls. When I
returned there in the 1970's, all the wall paintings had been retouched
and Sambo's skin was now so light he almost looked white. I guess the
owners were terrified about protests by black groups.
The thing about the story of "Little Black Sambo" is that Sambo was not
African, he was Indian. It is made clear in the story that it takes
place in India. Tigers are found in India, not Africa, and when the
tigers somehow turn into melted butter, the story adds "or 'ghee' as it
is called in India."

Subject: Attitudes toward Germans
In his comments about the America Firsters and specifically Col.
Lindbergh, Brian Johnson ends his commentary with:
"...in a speech in Des Moines, Iowa, Lindbergh decided to "name names," as
he put it, to identify exactly who was dragging America into war. "The three
most important [removed] are the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt
Administration."
While Lindbergh wasn't so Lucky in many of his comments at the time, I'd
say that the quote above is historically quite accurate. As a recap of
what happened in those times, on its own, it is not necessarily
anti-British, anti-Semite, or anti-FDR. I was raised in a conservative
Republican family where my father absolutely hated Franklin Roosevelt, but
all of us recognized in time that thanks to FDR and Winston Churchill,
we're not all goose-stepping today. As to the anti-Semite or anti-Jewish
sentiment, Roosevelt did have a number of Jewish advisors, but I doubt that
had much to do with his insight into the danger of the Axis intentions.
When we look back at what was happening in Europe, Africa and Asia in the
1930s, I am ashamed that it took so long for Americans then to realize the
dire threat to civilization. I often wonder if the foolish Japanese had
not attacked Pearl Harbor and other American Pacific outposts, would we
have ever awakened in time?
In fairness to Lindbergh, it should be remembered that like most all loyal
Americans, he changed his tune as of Pearl Harbor, and served with
distinction in the American military service through the war, despite FDR's
reluctance to have him do so. Eventually even Roosevelt relented, and
recognized at least the sincerity of the America Firsters, who plunged into
the war efforts in many ways.
We should never forget to thank our lucky stars that radio was here for us,
just at the right time for FDR and Churchill to alert and marshal the
English-speaking world , just as Hitler was using "Doctor" Goebbels' radio
facilities to rally his followers.
