Subject: Another Petrillo joke
I was listening to a Lum and Abner program from November 1946. In this
program, Lum, Abner, Cedric and Dr. Ben Withers were singing a
commercial over the party line for Lum's new Meadowlark restaurant.
The song itself was hilarious, but what followed was even better.
After a few seconds, the phone rang and Abner answered it. Abner said
"Lum it's for you." Lum said "Who is it?". Abner said "Do you know some
guy named Petrillo?" Great stuff.
Thanks to this mailing list for educating me on Mr. Petrillo. I
wouldn't have had the slightest idea what that joke was about
otherwise.
Y'all are the greatest!

Subject: re: Walter [removed] Happened?
It's indeed true that Tetley had an accident on a motorcycle which put him in pain for the rest
of his life. I've been working on a book on Tetley for a year now, and believe it or not, his last
years are obscure. I can find no friends to speak with, except for Stan Freberg, and it seems
he did die broke in a motel he was living at. He refused a lot of work in his last years, but
why is uncertain. Perhaps he was just too depressed.

Subject: Michael Gwynne's postings
May I say, for the record, how much I appreciate actor and writer Michael
Gwynne's postings in the Digest. They are poetic, profound, poignant, and
to me, immensely interesting. The highly personal anecdotes he shares
bring the actors I have admired to life in a totally new way. Whether he
writes of Raymond Edward Johnson, Mantan Moreland, or Jeff Corey, the
reader acquires insight into folks that most of us only know through their
work. The additional information makes reading the Digest a much richer,
deeper experience.
Thank you, Michael, for so sensitively and kindly sharing your memories.
You are a joy to read!

In our previous episode:
At what point was Brace Beemer the ANNOUNCER on The Lone [removed] do any
episodes still exist where he fillls that role?
Seems there are a number of them in circulation, from broadcasts prior to
Graser's death. I have some in my collection somewhere.
Just out of curiosity, how many LR eps survive in total? All of them that
were recorded?

Subject: Sound Effects and the Like
Chris Holm noted, commenting on my observation of recorded sound effects
on OTR,
I've always wondered about this sound effect. It seems like I keep
hearing the same sequence over and over again. Not just a car driving,
but the exact same recording. I first noticed it while listening to a
sequence of Green Hornets back to back. The non-black beauty cars always
sounded the same.
When I was in college, which was in New York City, I found an area just
South of the Times Square area that sold all kinds of records, including
some designed for professional uses only. One of these were generic
musical numbers that could be used in TV soundtracks for bridges, fights,
chases, and the like. A few years later, I'd be watching one or another
of the TV adventure shows and I'd hear some of the music that was on the
record. (Later, when I was making occasional industrial information
films, I had a different record of such music -- one I was licensed to
use -- for the same purpose.) Such records were fairly common.
I suspect that back in the heyday of OTR, there were equivalent
sound-effects records. It would be far easier to buy "generic sound
effects" on records than to have to develop them individually, show by
show. Even where a show did have unique sound effects on records,
though, they would naturally "sound the same" on different episodes,
because even the most dedicated program would be unlikely to have
different sounds of the same activity.

Subject: RCA Logo, and ...
With the discussion of the "RCA Dog," Nipper, in the last few Digests, I
thought I'd share. The other day, I saw an RCA ad on television for the
corporate spread of TV products, there was Nipper, and with him was a
puppy of the same breed. So after all these decades upon decades, I
guess Nipper finally produced a family. Probably "take your pup to work
day." :-)

Way back in the lost annals of time in a galaxy far, far [removed]
A sound effects artiste was the first one to ponder, "How do I indicate
that an automobile is coming to a stop?"
The answer came like a bolt from the blue: "Screeching tires and
brakes! Of course!"
As a result, radio programs, movies, television programs, made-for-TV
movies, it doesn't matter what, as long as they are sound - all use this
same sound effect today.
The driver may be in a panic stop situation. He may be coming to a slow,
hopefully quiet stop in a Lover's Lane so as not to bother the other
residents. He may be on pavement, mud and mire, loose gravel, sand,
rain-slick asphalt, dirt road, for all I know riding into a foot of water
on a flooded road.
Yet there's still that screeching stop! Amazing!

Subject: Announcer BRACE BEEMER
In a message dated 8/22/02 10:04:28 AM, Matt Cherry asks:
At what point was Brace Beemer the ANNOUNCER on The Lone [removed] do any
episodes still exist where he fillls that role?
***Brace Beemer was announcing THE LONE RANGER immediately prior to Earle
Graser's death and appears in a number of episodes in early 1941 including
04/04/41 #1279/ 496 "Landgrabbers Loss." However, Brace apparently took a
Monday off and Charles Wood announced Graser's final show (04/07/41 #1280/
497 "Sixty Days For Life"). --Anthony Tollin***

Subject: Brace Beemer as Lone Ranger announcer
Matt Cherry asks: "At what point was Brace Beemer the
ANNOUNCER on The Lone [removed]
do any
episodes still exist where he fills that role?"
Brace Beemer was an announcer during at least a
portion of Earle Graser's tenure as the Ranger (May
16, 1933- April 7, 1941 according to Dunning). I don't
have time to check all these episodes, but I believe
Beemer was the announcer for all of the 18 1938 Graser
episodes collected in Radio Spirits' "Lone Ranger Vol.
4" collection. He was the announcer for the first
episode in the collection (The Apache Kid 3/2/38).
That he was also the announcer for two 1939 Graser
episodes in the "Lone Ranger Vol. 3" collection
(Trouble on the Railroad (1/27/39) and Trouble in New
London (1/30/39)) tends to reinforce that he announced
through 1938.
What I'm not sure of is when Brace Beemer started as
the Lone Ranger announcer. According to Dunning, he
was the second LR announcer, coming after Harold True.
However, he doesn't say when the one succeeded the
other.

Subject: Mighty Memory Mobile?
I have been listening to the program The Mighty Memory Mobile which
featured old radio clips along with banter from Bob Maxwell and Garry
Moore. I wondered if any one listened to it when it was out originally
and knows anything about the program? It appears to have come out of
NewYork City and may have been local or syndicated and from comments by
Moore it was early to mid 70's. I have exausted the source where I got
these and wonder where more might be found. A very entertaining program.
Thanks in advance. Dennis

Hi all,
Yes Nipper is on the "E" floor of the Capitol Tower in Hollywood just as you
exit the elevator. According to the people who were in the tower in the mid
50's there were four paintings done, one is at EMI in England, one at
Capitol and I don't remember where the other two were supposed to be. BTW
"E" floor stands for executive and is a nice way of not saying
the 13th floor.

The following person e-mailed me today, since I originally placed their
request on the Digest, I am reposting it for them.

I know you don't have this video, but a few months back someone
located an associate that has the "I love to Singa" by Owl
Jolson Cartoon Video. I had made contact with this individual back then,
however, after making arrangements for the video, I unfortunately lost the
email and regular mailing address so that i could send the money order for
the videos. If in any way possible you remember this
request and the party i was referred to, I would appreciate you forwarding
their name and email address back to me. thank you for your kind
assistance.

Subject: Jack Benny Question
Cheryl Morris in Harrisburg is looking to verify a specific Peter Lorre
appearance on The Jack Benny Program, cause she does not have any March 1946
episodes in her collection. She is a die-hard Lorre fan, and wishes to have
a Jack Benny fan contact her.
She could easily research Lorre's appearance on the web, but as usual, there
are tons of Jack Benny logs on the web and they are all conflicting. Steve
Kelez generously helped her narrow a date or two, but she's asked me to find
a Jack Benny fan who could supply her the March 1946 episodes. Can anyone
help her?

Lest you all know the answers and assumed that someone else supplied them to

these questions to which no one knows the answers? I'll try again:
Does anyone know who played Sgt. King in the two 15-minute audition shows of
KING OF THE ROYAL MOUNTED? And what is the date of the half hour show
starring Richard Dix? Do you have any other information on this series?
Thanks,

Hi Gang:
I really like the song & dance number called "My, My!" that Eddie
"Rochester" Anderson performed in one of the Jack Benny movies ("The
Meanest Man in the World"? I can't exactly place it). Does anybody out there
in the ether happen to know if Rochester's performance of this song is
available on CD?
Please allow me to thank everybody in advance for any assistance offered.

The middle commercial for Johnson's Wax was usually very clever and often
fit into the theme of the show. What I have long wondered is this: Did
Donn Quinn and/or Phil Leslie write those commercials? Or did Johnson's ad
agency have someone with the talent to integrate the ad into the show?
I suspect the opening and closing ads might have been supplied by the
agency. Its just that middle one I am wondering about.
