Robert Newman will go in Monday for open heart surgery. So everyone put him
in your prayers. I'm not sure how much recovery time it takes, but we may not
see him at the convention this year. He will be missed. If anyone would like
to send a card. 11509 Islandale Dr. Forrest Park, Oh 45240

A friend has asked me to find out if, during World War 2, the soap
opera "The Right To Happiness" incorporated plotlines, suggestions, or
references to the effort to stir the patriotic cooperation that would
win the war. I'm more familiar with the comedies, such as Fibber
McGee & Molly, that did much to arouse the corporate spirits of the
nation, and I present her question to those soap opera scholars among
   us.

Although it may label me as a heretic, I have to admit that I eat my

Subject: "The Golden Age of Radio" and "A One-Night
 Stand with the Big Bands"

The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].

Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "One Night Stand." We present new
shows every week or so. The current three programs will be
available on line at least until the morning of April 10, 2006.

Program 32 - November, 1972 - Vincent Price

Vincent Price is best remembered for his roles in movies,
specifically the Roger Corman adaptations from Edger Allan
Poe. Although these gave him a wide variety of characters to
play and were striking enough, they type cast him for the
remainder of his career.

It was while in London In 1934 that the theatre bug hit him,
theatre tickets were relatively cheap and Price took advantage
of this.

On this week's show we learn that with all his successes on
Broadway, in films and television, Price's first love was radio.

Program 33 - December, 1972 - Raymond Edward Johnson

Raymond Edward Johnson was a versatile radio and stage actor
who provided a signature moment for radio as the ghoulish host
with the creaking door in the long-running "Inner Sanctum."

Mr. Johnson was a familiar presence in the radio serials of the
1940's and won acclaim playing Thomas Jefferson in Sidney
Kingsley's 1943 Broadway play "The Patriots." But he was best
known as Raymond, the original host for the gothic tales of
"Inner Sanctum," which made its debut in January 1941 and ran
for 11 years, on NBC, CBS and ABC.

"I didn't have Leonard Bernstein and 200 musicians doing `The
Ride of the Valkyries,' " Himan Brown, the director of "Inner
Sanctum," remembered long afterward. "All I used was a creaking
door. There are only two sounds in radio that are trademarked -
the creaking door and the NBC chimes."

Mr. Johnson also played the lead role in "Don Winslow of the Navy"
and "Mandrake the Magician" in his busy radio career.

Mr. Johnson died on Aug. 15, 2001, in Wallingford, Conn.
He was 90.

"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands" With Arnold Dean

Charlie Barnet - April, 1972

Millionaire playboy and bandleader Charlie Barnet is one of the
more colorful figures in jazz history. Nicknamed ''Mad Mab,'' he
was married more times than you can count on both hands. He
was also a champion of racial equality, hiring many black singers
and musicians at a time when other bands were segregated. His
use of African-American performers kept his orchestra out of
several hotels and ballrooms and was also probably the reason
why he was never picked for any big commercial radio series.
His music and arrangements were admittedly influenced by Duke
Ellington. So dedicated to the Duke was he that when he built a
fallout shelter after the war he stocked it with a collection of
Ellington recordings.

In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."

Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.
