Subject: Re: Alistair Cooke
I always enjoyed watching Omnibus hosted by Alistair Cooke. That show was
my first introduction to him. It was an intellegent, educational program.
I wonder of any of those old kines are flooting around. I'd love to see
some of those shows again.
As much as I enjoyed radio as a kid, there were some great TV shows back in
the 50's that made owning a set worthwhile. I don't think I could say that
today.
Did anybody get around to inventing that time machine that keeps getting
talked about on the digest. I'd go back for a day or two even without a
tape recorder just to get a chance to hear and see some programs that
aren't available any more.

Subject: Another CD storage solution
Hello, someone posted about the slim jewel cases. What I also recommend are
those CD envelopes with the clear window in the front. It has a flap to
close it, and that is on the bottom, and they're also thinner than the
plastic slim cases. They are also good for mailing cd's, being of less
weight. You probably won't be able to find them in stores, so you may have
to order online, but I don't know what they're called. It took me forever to
find mine from CompUSA, and I believe that I had to call them.
Thanks a lot.

Letter from America.
This series of talks, which began in 1946 and ran for 2,869 programs,
holds the English language record, I believe, for longest-running radio
broadcast. (Meet the Press, in overlapping radio and TV versions, is a
year older.)
The oldest continuously broadcast radio show is the
GRAND OLE OPRY first broadcast in November of 1925 on
WSM AM out of Nashville. It continues every Saturday
evening right up to the midnight hour heading into its
79th year!!

Subject: Jack Benny Triple Header
There is a film presentation including Jack Benny coming up in Bloomington,
Minn. A profile of Harry Shearer in today's Hartford Courant mentions his
work on the Jack Benny program as a youngster and some Jack memorabilia is
involved in the Chicago Museum of Broadcasting sale on which some comment has
passed on this list.
Links below - enjoy.

Subject: Dear Abby
I too, am mourning the passing of Harry Bartel, one of the things I really
wanted to do was to meet Harry, but never did. We have exchanged emails, and
thankfully I was able to tell him how much I enjoyed his various portayals. I
will certainly miss his comments.
Now for the slighly off OTR question. Among Harry's credits were, I believe,
the announcer of the Dear Abby segments which I believe aired in the late 50's
or early 60's.
Although this is slightly out of the OTR timeframe, I was wondering if any of
these programs exist?
Does anyone know if any of these shows exist?
Thanks

Subject: "Ask President Carter" on CBS Radio
It was 27 years ago today, on Saturday 5 March 1977, that CBS News and
President Jimmy Carter had a two hour special radio broadcast (I think
it ran from 3-5pm EST), called "Ask President Carter" carried over
the CBS RAD))|((O NETWORK. CBS Newsman Walter Cronkite was the anchor/
moderator for the broadcast.
This was a live "call-in" (talk show) radio program where the general
public could call up, and those who were successful in getting past busy
signals, re-orders, and All Ccts Busy recordings, etc., were able to have
a chance to chat "on-air" with Carter to ask questions and make some
comments.

Subject: Another OTR Death
For the record, writer Jerome Lawrence passed away Feb. 29th in Malibu,
California. Although best known as the co-author (with Robert E. Lee) of
Broadway's "Inherit The Wind" and "Auntie Mame," Lawrence cut his teeth on
radio. His radio credits include The Hallmark Hall of Fame, Hallmark
Playhouse, The Halls of Ivy, The Railroad Hour, Presenting Charles Boyer,
Favorite Story, Request Performance, Free World Theater, Young Love, Call
For Music and Everything For the Boys. Lawrence is quoted by Leonard Maltin
as saying, "When it came to putting biographies in their Playbill's, they
didn't do it for years and years, because it said if you were a radio
writer, people thought you wrote soap operas." Maltin says Lawrence never
felt embarrassed about his radio work; he was proud of the medium and his
work in it. Lawrence wrote, "Radio has wings. It has no stage to keep it
within the limits of a proscenium arch, no camera to confine to things that
may be seen. The imagination of the listener is our most ardent and helpful
collaborator. It was a theater of endless possibilities. When we did "Lost
Horizon" on radio, you actually heard high, thin winds. Some flute music,
and you're there! You don't have to have all that heavy scenery."
So with his passing, perhaps we should tip our hats to all the writers of
old time radio; the men and women who wrote the words for countless actors
to say and interpret, and thus entertained us all.

Subject: Stations for OTR
I'm moving my home here to the Olathe KS/Kansas City KS area,
and was wondering if there are any stations here which broadcast
OTR and when. Programs similar to those which we often discuss
on this mailing list.
BTW, was the character of Lestrade in very many of the "Adventures
of Sherlock Holmes"? I've recognized him in several of the movies
and the PBS series. What about OTR? And, is it just me, or do
some of the sidekicks for OTR detectives seem to be a little dim?
More muscle than gray matter? Why? is it so they won't overshadow
the title character/crime solver?
As always,

Subject: Radio Comedy as Propaganda in WW II
I received the following email message and I
thought it would make
an interesting topic for discussion on this
newsletter.
At the moment i am writting a dissertation for
my degree (Leeds University, England) on radio
comedy as a propaganda tool in America
during WWII. I was wondering if you could think
of anything that might be useful to me, as i am
refering to Fibber McGee and Molly. I have found
that it is fairly difficult to find information,
scripts and such like. I
would be very greatful for any sugestions or added
information.
My e-mail is millyskene@[removed]. Look forward
to hearing from you,<<
I do know that Fibber McGee and Molly did quite a
few episodes to bolster morale on the home front.

Subject: Technology And Nostalgia
My next-door neighbor is some years my senior. When I once mentioned
listening to OTR as a child, she mentioned that she used to listen to
Little Orphan Annie (LOA) program. So I found for her a George
Garabedian LOA LP record, and presented it to her.
She has no turntable. (Neither do I, FWIW.)
Fortunately, one of her sons does, and will transfer the show to
cassette.
She lamented that there weren't more such shows. I mentioned to her that
there are more than one program floating about, and asked her whether she
had an MP3 player. The blank stare she gave me indicated that she had no
idea what I was talking about. I explained about MP3, and mentioned that
such disks could be played on some computer configurations.
She has no computer. Not interested in them.
Finally, I discovered that she has a DVD player. Most of these will play
MP3s.
Problem solved, though a bit strangely.

Subject: OTR in Maine
For anyone living in southern or central Maine:
we are very fortunate to have a Sunday evening of unsponsored classic OTR
running on news/talk WLOB, 1310 AM AND [removed] FM. I stumbled across it
accidentally a few weeks ago.
At five pm they run the current "Twilight Zone", and that's followed at six
pm by four uninterrupted (so far) hours of OTR, including, but not limited
to, Suspense, Jack Benny, Gildersleeve, Inner Sanctum, Gunsmoke,
Richard Diamond, and more.
I have worked in radio here in Bangor, and I can tell you unequivocally that
OTR is the hardest sell in the business (especially trying to convince the
station owner to give it a shot), so we need to support WLOB in this effort.
At the very least, if you enjoy the shows, thank them for what they're doing.
Louie Johnson
