We went to the antique mall the other day and walked away with an old radio.
I really want to set it up with a connection for my I-Pod so I can play OTR
through it. I believe that The Shadow and Inner sanctum will be a real thrill
to hear out of it.

The radio is a FIRESTONE AIR CHIEF. It has 4 acorn shaped brown knobs, and
there is a number on the back, 742518. It has channel selector buttons that
do not work well. It has a label with instructions for moving a lever for
what looks like antenna screws to switch from the record player to the radio.
It hums but does not play.

Please contact me off-list to let me know if anyone knows anyone in the
Raleigh NC area qualified to help me restore this old timer. If any of you
know much about it, or have a memory of it, I would love to hear from you.
Last but not least, when one restores an old radio, do they normally refinish
the cabinet, or just polish it, scratches and all?

Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

  Ken

 with the Big Bands"

The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, and "A One Night Stand with the Big Bands"
with Arnold Dean can be heard at [removed].

Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "One Night Stand." We present new
shows every week or so. The current three programs will be
available on line at least until the morning of June 26, 2006.

Program 52 - July, 1974 - Robert Cummings

American actor Robert Cummings studied for an engineer's
degree at several colleges before concentrating his energies
at the American School of Dramatic Arts. After returning
from a trip to England, he became possessed with the notion
that he could best conquer Hollywood if he passed himself
off as a British actor, so for a brief uncomfortable period he
called himself Blade Stanhope Conway. The best he could get
was an extra part in Laurel and Hardy's Sons of the Desert
(1933).

Although known primarily for film, stage, and TV, Mr.
Cummings appeared in many radio shows, which will be the
focus of this program.

Program 53 - August, 1974 - Mel Blanc

Mel Blanc (May 30, 1908 - July 10, 1989), was born in San
Francisco, California. His ability to create voices for multiple
characters first attracted attention when he worked as a voice
actor in radio. He was a regular on the Jack Benny Program
in various roles, including Benny's automobile (a Maxwell in
desperate need of a tune up), violin teacher Professor LeBlanc,
Polly the Parrot, and Benny's pet polar bear Carmichael.

Blanc's success on the Jack Benny Program led to his own radio
show on the CBS radio network, The Mel Blanc Show, which
ran from September 3, 1946 to June 24, 1947. Blanc played
himself as the hapless owner a fix-it shop, in addition to a wide
range of comical support characters. Other regular characters
were played by Mary Jane Croft, Joe Kearns, Hans Conried,
Alan Reed, Earle Ross, Jim Backus and Bea Benaderet.

"A One Night Stand with the Big Bands" With Arnold Dean

Buddy DeFranco - October, 1973

Buddy DeFranco is generally regarded as the greatest jazz clarinetist
of all time.

Buddy DeFranco began playing professionally in 1935, at the age of
only 12, helping his blind father support a poor family in South
Philadelphia. After attending the Mastbaum School and receiving
classical training, Buddy broke into the jazz music business when he
won a national Tommy Dorsey talent contest. By 1939, Buddy was
on the road with the Johnny "Scat" Davis big band and spent the next
several years moving from band to band. Finally, in 1944, Tommy
Dorsey himself recruited the gifted clarinetist, and thus began Buddy's
four year stint with the most popular dance band of the era.

Although the big band provided a perfect forum for Buddy to showcase
his talent on the clarinet, the "king" of instruments during the swing era,
Buddy grew restless with the limitations of popular music and Tommy
Dorsey's rigid interpretations of hit songs. In 1948, Dorsey had "the talk"
with Buddy.

"Everybody that listens to something hears it differently from
their own perspective. And you can't please everyone. Don't
even try. Please yourself first and then try to please those
people around you that you feel know what you're doing."
  -- Buddy DeFranco

In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."

Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.

Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.

Whenever I think of Arnold Stang, two things come to my mind:
his appearances on "The Henry Morgan Show" and his role on a Frank
Sinatra movie called "The Man With The Golden Arm". His performance
on each one of these occasions were, IMHO, terrific and showed his
ability to do comedy as well as drama.

Don commented:

I was listening to some Suspense yesterday, particularly 5/1/47, "Lady In
Distress" with Ava Gardner. I noted a small unbilled cameo (just a few
lines) from Orson Welles! I have not seen this mentioned in any of the
Suspense logs or books on the show. Surely I am not the first to note this??

No, it's been noted before. That is Welles in the small cameo. Bill Spier,
the producer/director of SUSPENSE, loved doing in-jokes in the episodes and
Welles and Spier were good friends (both magaicians by hobby) and since
Gardner was married to Welles at the time, it was easy to do the in-joke
one-liner.
