It is at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorn NY which is north of NYC on the
west side of the Hudson. What was distinguishing about the grave to me was
the ordinariness of it. His is just in the row with lots of common people.
Probably the way that Portland thought he wanted it. Just a guess, of course.

For baseball fans, Gate of Heaven is also where Babe Ruth is buried.

Subject: RE: Battery radios
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/mixed
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
In response to an earlier thread on battery radios, I have in my possession a
radio that I purchased at an antique store in Grand Forks, North Dakota back
in the seventies when I was in grad school. It was owned by a farm family that
did not have electricity. The radio is a Coronado table radio, Model 43-6451
made by Coronado Mfg. Co, which was a division of Gamble-Skogmo, a Minneapolis
company. The radio was manufactured in 1946. The battery wires had been cut
and the battery was missing, but a few years later I found a place in
Worcester, MA called Atom Electronics owned by an older fellow who still had
boxes of tubes and other paraphernalia from before the transistor era. We
couldn't find an appropriate battery, so he installed an AC power pack which
worked for several years. The radio does not work now because one or two tubes
have blown and now I don't know of any places that still work on these old
devices.

Subject: Repeeting myself
In the Digest from 3/26/09 our own Jim Cox referred to
Colgate-Palmolive-Peet. And surely housewives around the world remember and
continue today to use their wonderful [removed] Peet? Who was she, and
where has she gone, as Colgate-Palmolive continues to shine us, clean us and
pamper us?
Where in the world is Peet!
Ah, Joe Postove, what an intro! "Whatever happened to Peet?" begins the
Preface of my 2008 release "Sold on Radio: Advertisers in the Golden Age of
Broadcasting" ([removed],
800-253-2187). The answer is provided in detail in the chapter focused on
the company we know today as Colgate-Palmolive. Here's a clue for the
curious: Kansas City siblings Robert and William Peet and their Peet
Brothers Soap Company, the largest soap manufacturer west of the Mississippi
River, launched in 1872, figured prominently in the origins of CPP. The U.
S. government also relied heavily on them during WWI as a principal supplier
of glycerin, used in explosives.
Their fascinating encounters with the B. J. Johnsons of Milwaukee (who
developed a palm- and olive-based cleanser) in 1927 and heirs of William
Colgate of Jersey City in 1928 are revealed. A 37-story art deco high-rise
tower in Chicago, the Palmolive Building, was to be the nerve center for a
multinational operation. Opened in 1929, it lasted just five years before
the company consolidated in Jersey City. The Peet appellation lasted to
1953, but the principals were long gone, and the Johnsons were forced from
power in 1933. Just two-and-a-half years ago the Peets' 1872 soap-making
plant was finally shut down and its remaining 250 employees put out to
lather. It's a tale in the annals of corporate radio sponsorship that bears
repeeting.

Subject: RADIO RECALL
The April issue of RADIO RECALL will be emailed this week to
subscribers who have elected PDF version; hard-copy fans will have to
wait another two weeks. Here's a preview of this jam-packed [removed]
Our front page article is "Longest Running Radio Shows" by Jim Cox,
listing in order the shows with the longest duration, including the
top four with over 70 years of airtime each: "Grand Ol' Opry,"
"Mormon Tabernacle Choir," "Lutheran Hour," and "Metropolitan Opera."
Mark Anderson reviews the latest "It's That Time Again" release from
Bear Manor Media (17 new OTR stories, edited by Jim Harmon.) Turning
to DVDs, Rob Farr reviews the recent releases of Kit Parker Films,
including noir movies based upon "Counterspy", "Mr. District
Attorney," and "Johnny Modero, Pier 23." One of these DVD sets
contains an extensive interview with the daughter of Phillips H. Lord
on his lengthy radio career.
Melanie Aultman contributes an article, "Old Reels Find New Home,"
detailing the transfer of a large OTR collection to a Florida radio
station. Another piece summarizes the history of "Boston Blackie"
from his pre-WW I stories and silent films to his later success in
radio. Requirements for entering the 2009 FOTR script contest are
also set forth. Finally there is an interesting quiz to test your
recall of movies featured on "Lux Radio Theater."
A recent survey of our web site reflects thousands of hits from
viewers. Most visited RADIO RECALL articles are: "Captain Midnight
and Decoder Rings" by Stephen Kallis (8390 hits), "The Shadow Radio
Program" by Karl Schadow (5608 hits), "Writing for Radio" by Edgar
Farr Russell III (4488 hits), and "It Pays To Be Ignorant" by Derek
Tague (4033 hits.) Congratulations to these authors!

I work for a Library system in Minnesota and work as and Inter-Library Loan
Aide. I see
thousands of requests come thru each month. We try to fill every request
possible. We search the entire United States, Canada and some times overseas
to help a patron find a
book or other materials. Here is what to do. Contact your Library systems
headquarters and ask to speak to the Inter-Library Loan Department or check
your libraries web site and place and a request. I am confident that they
will make every effort to help you find what your looking for. Also be sure
to ask if any charges are applyed to the search or loan of material. Some
librarys ask for a small amount to cover postage ect, many do not.
I hope this is of help. Should any one have any questions please feel free to
contact me.
Many Thanks!

I recently picked up a theatre poster ad for WLS veteran balladeer Bradley
Kincaid. He was booked at the Bisby Theatre, West Winfield NY (south of
Utica). Checking the movie that was also on the same bill ("Every Day's A
Holiday"), I think the "Kentucky Mountain Boy" made this gig in 1938.
Can anybody tell me if Bradley at the time was broadcasting over WGY in
Schenetady NY? I know he did a stint there at one time.
Thank you!

Subject: Bing Crosby & Dinah Shore
Larry, Dinah was a frequent guest on Bing's Shows.
11/13/52; 11/20/52; 3/19/53; 12/27/50; 4/4/51; 10/31/51 are some of the
dates. Back in the tape days most dealers carried these but I'm not
sure many were ever digitized. McCoy recording in Washington St. used
to have all of these. Also the 40's station on XM play Bing shows
sometime Sunday and on Wed at 9pm eastern. Many be on web?
There is also a 1 hour Xmas Command Performance with Bing, Dinah, Bob
Hope and many others. Bing plays Dick Tracy and Dinah is Tess
Trueheart. Its a gem.
Dunning list Dinah as being on the air quite a bit from 39 to 55 with
her own show. Wouldn't be surprised if Bing did match her appearances
on his show with visits to her's. Would think her shows on much rarer
however.

Subject: OTR Books
In smaller libraries, especially, librariams have very limited funds and are
thus reluctant to order OTR and similar special-interest or niche books
without knowing if there are members of the congregation who actually will be
interested in reading them.
So if you see a review of a book you'd like to read, Xerox the review
and take it to the library and request that it be turned over to that
institution's purchasing committee.
(It won't hurt anything if your sister-in-law and your second cousin are
willing to do the same thing. <g>)
