Subject: Ranger Western Union story

Stephen Kallis wasn't sure about the title of the Lone Ranger episode in
which the masked man helps Ed Creighton and the Western Union company
complete the first transcontinental telegraph, thus aiding the cause of the
Union during the Civil War, much to the relief of President Lincoln.
That was "Western Union Story", No. 2264, air date July 9, 1952. This may
be the closest Honest Abe's and the Ranger's paths came.

became his trademark. And did his fedora.

1937 - CBS introduced listeners to Aunt Jenny's Real Life Stories for
the first time. A complete story was told in five, 15-minute episodes
which aired Monday thru Friday each week. Aunt Jenny was played by Edith
Spencer and later, by Agnes Young. The show continued on radio until
1956 and was sponsored over the years by Spry shortening and Lux soap.
Aunt Jenny's whistling canary, for those of you ready to inquire, was
played by animal imitator, Henry Boyd.

There he goes into the drugstore. He puts a coin into the scale.
Weight: 236 pounds, Fortune: Danger! Who is it? THE FAT MAN.

Whatever house I enter, I will go for the good of mankind. Any
thing I learn there I will keep silence thereon, holding them as sacred

Subject: RE: Red Skelton character

Would anyone know the date of the Red Skelton radio
broadcast on which Red's 'Cauliflower McPugg'
character first appeared?

Phil

My guess is he started the character in 1941 at the beginning of his radio
show with the Nelsons. Juniors catch praise "I Dood It" became a big hit
during the war. He did not do Deadeye, Clem and the rest on Avalon Time. I
have some scripts and cassette tapes of the time but it is not complete so
I don't know the exact broadcast McPugg was introduced. Most episode
listing on the web do not include the 1941-44 years. They cover the years
after he came back from the war and had a new cast. Is there a Ozzie and
Harriet Nelson expert on the list?

(I tried responding to you before but had trouble with your email address.)

Andrew Godfrey asked "what readers of the digest did
after the last OTR show had been broadcast" supposedly on Sept. 30, 1962.

I listened to the last soaps and did know that something was changing,

You must have been listening to those daytime serials via your own tape. I
distinctly recall hearing them sign off forever on Friday, Nov. 25, 1960. I
was
on my way from school to work.

Looking through the March 19, 1938 issue of WLS Radio' "Stand By" there's
this note:

"Gosden & Correll are real pioneers of radio. They spoke into a microphone
for the first time in 1920, on an experimental station in New Orleans."

'tis true?!

On the "Abbott and Costello Show" set that I have, there was a
recurring
character called "Mr. Melonhead" who was always goading Costello into
an ever expanding argument. The credits for these shows (between 1944 and
1950) never mentioned who played this character on the program. Does anyone
know what actor played this part?

I want to apologize for asking about cassettes of shows being available. I
did some research online today and found out the first cassette tape player
wasn't on market till 1964 when Norelco produced the Carry Corder model so
it is unlikely many shows were saved till 1964 using cassette players.

Subject: The Fleming Valve

Thanks to WEH for his information on the Fleming Valve. It is something I
have repeated many times.

In a time when the History Channel credits Marconi with inventing the radio
tube, very few folks know of Edison, Fleming, and De Forest's importance to
the history of radio.

Check your lightbulbs and you will see it still happens. The all white
coated ones don't show it, but the older, frosted ones that show the
filament do show it.
