Over time have picked up what few episodes still exist of the soap Lorenzo
Jones. My question; the character started out as a quirky, kind of funny,
inventor of sorts who was put down by folks, bbut not by Bell who loved
[removed] What Ibm wondering is why in the later episodes Lorenzo underwent a
character change, no more quirky off beat behavior (and became far less
interesting). Anyone know why they changed him? Same actor played the part
throughout.

Subject: The Mystery of the Microphone
... or, Wooden You Like to Know?
This may seem long and a bit esoteric, but perhaps of interest to those of
us who follow all sorts of elements and rabbit trails of OTR. If you go in
search of radio stars' pictures, you will often find them standing before a
microphone with its network flag. Thus:

and

Something isn't quite right. This microphone has no manufacturer's insignia
on it, and I haven't seen it with any other network's personalities.
A decade or more ago, an antique radio restorer and microphone collector
told me - "That's not a real one." Then we discussed, "Why not?" Maybe, even
though CBS wanted one easily identified with radio, they didn't want to use
the RCA 77 with its red "meatball" badge, which might be a bow to NBC and
its parent company. They simply could have gone to a metal-working shop and
fabricated several of these generic props, but why not just wrap a real one
in black paper with "CBS" printed on it?
Then, just the other day, I saw this: (Scroll down and click on the picture
of "RCA 77 movie prop?") [removed]
Wood? Well, what could be easier and cheaper than turning out a few
cylinders and half-rounds on a wood lathe, spray painting them
black-and-silver and stenciling on the "holes" for the grille? Maybe they
added some small metal pieces - the band across the top seen in some photos
- and hardware to attach it to an existing stand or add additional flags.
But there are plenty of CBS publicity pictures that do show the RCA mike.
(I'm old-school - it will forever be "mike" to me, not "mic.") Perhaps it
was (1) a matter of convenience; if a star was in a radio studio, sure, use
the existing microphone; and (2) if it was a posed picture in a photo
studio, what radio engineer would allow a delicate ribbon-type microphone
out of his sight to be banged around by a photographer?
Maybe someone on the digest with ties to the era, the network, publicity and
engineering can offer some better answers.
(About WJBK flags on the wood microphone: As far as I could determine, WJBK
in Detroit was an independent station, but when WJBK-TV signed on, it was an
affiliate of CBS. Maybe that's how it came by the prop.)

For what it is worth, all is not lost. I just today introduced my 9 year old
daughter to OTR, as she got a new MP3 player for Christmas. So far, she has
devoured several The Great Gildersleeve and Sherlock Holmes episodes and wants
me to download more.
All is not lost.

Does anyone know the number and season of the final issue of Bob Burchett's
Old Time Radio Digest magazine? The last issue which I've seen mentioned is

Sorry to report the passing of OTR actor-director Herb Ellis (Dragnet). He
would've been 98 in January.
Our mutual friend Peggy Webber just posted: "Many of our excellent actors have
passed recently. But we have just lost one of the ones most deserving of being
called an actor He was and is Herb Ellis. He died this morning at his home in
San Gabriel [CA]. May God rest his soul. He was an angel to all who knew him.
Never have so many owed so much to one man. He never sought credit. But did so
much behind the scenes."
