Subject: Ellery Queen

I always remembered the TV "Ellery Queen" for being the first dramatic show
I ever saw in which someone (Jim Hutton, as Ellery Queen) broke the fourth
  wall.

Who was Ellery Queen? Was he ever a real person? If so, did he ever
have a connection with the radio or TV show? Or with Ellery Queen's
Mystery Magazine?

 From Those Were The Days

10/17

1919 The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) was formed.

1938 - This was a big day in Tinseltown. NBC moved to the corner of
Sunset and Vine, the "Crossroads of the World". The new Hollywood Radio
City drew thousands of visitors ready to fill studio audience seats for
popular radio programs.

1938 Captain Midnight was heard for the first time, on Mutual. The
Captain flew his single engine plane all over the place fighting crime.

10/18

1922 As the British observed the wild growth of radio in the [removed],
they realized the potential of broadcasting in their own country, as
well as the need for its regulation. The British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) was established on this day to monitor the development
of the radio biz in Great Britain.

1943 The first broadcast of Perry Mason was presented on CBS. In the
15 minute (Monday Friday) shows, Perry was played by Barlett Robinson,
Santos Ortega, Donald Briggs and John Larkin.

10/19

1937 "The freedom of the press is a flaming sword. Use it justly, hold
it high, guard it well." The radio classic, Big Town, made its debut on
CBS radio. Star reporters at the Illustrated Press, Steve Wilson and
Lorelei Kilbourne, were played by Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor.
Tell the Story was the theme song. Sponsors included Ironized Yeast
tablets and Lifebuoy soap.

10/20

1930 - One of the most memorable of all radio shows, "The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes", was first heard on the NBC Red network. Its debut
entry, "The Speckled Band", featured William Gillette in the role of the
famous detective. Gillette introduced Holmes to New York audiences as
early as 1899 ... on the stage, not the radio, of course.

1932 - Journalist Robert Trout joined CBS. Trout became a household name
to CBS listeners -- and they later became loyal viewers of Trout on CBS-TV.

10/23

1932 - Fred Allen made his radio debut. His wife, Portland Hoffa, joined
him on the CBS radio broadcast. Allen's comedy-variety program was known
as "The Linit Bath Club Revue". It then became "The Salad Bowl Revue",
then, "The Sal Halpatica Revue", "The Hour of Smiles", "Town Hall
Tonight", "The Texaco Star Theatre" and finally, someone with just a bit
of sense, came up with "The Fred Allen Show". The comedic legend stayed
on radio for 17 years.

Hi,
I am a former reporter at the Boston Globe, off now writing books. My last
was a biography of Satchel Paige, out last summer from Random House.
My next, for the same publisher, is a bio of Superman.
Why am I boring you with this?
Because I am trying to find as many scripts as I can -- or transcripts -- of
the Adventures of Superman radio show.
Any way to ask your researchers if they know of any? And to ask if any have
studied the shows for classes or research papers or?
Thanks, and feel free to say "go away."

Subject: Mr. Keen

I want to thank all the loyal fans of Harry Nile who have contacted me
regarding Jim Cox's posting that Mr. Keen was the longest running radio
private detective show in any format. Sorry folks Jim is right, to a point.
Mr. Keen is the longest running "network" detective show in American audio
history. Harry's adventures didn't go country wide until March of 1996, over
14 years ago. However Harry has been on the air continuously since 1991 with
close to 200 new episodes done in that time to complement the original 26
done in the 70's. As far as this forum is concerned though its Mr. Keen hands
down.

Any of my soap opera texts issued by Scarecrow Press or McFarland & Co.
would provide detailed information and answer all of Kenneth Clarke's
questions about Perry Mason, the fictional barister-turned-sleuth created by
Earle Stanley Gardner. To answer one of his most pressing questions, the
series first appeared on CBS Radio in 1943 and played there until the end of
1955. Its serialized quarter-hours were underwritten by P&G for Camay and
Tide and some of its cases were't tidied up for a year, one lasting 18+
months. It was some of the most chillingly intriguing matinee mayhem ever
broadcast.

I had looked into this a few years ago and if I remember correctly the OTR
version was considered more of a soap opera show. I believe it was one of
those 15 minute daily programs and each "case" could take a few weeks. There
are shows out there, but I'm not sure if there are many complete "cases"
available.

I believe this is accurate and I hope it helps.

from 11/13/47 (047) Guest - Audie Murphy, Max Baer, Maxie Rosenbloom.

We then listen to a series about a private detective. It starrs Jackson
Beck. He plays the part of Philo Vance.

Next we hear an abbreviated Red Skelton Show
