Subject: Just an added note on Bob Hope

I thought I'd add this note, from personal experience:

When I was a kid, around 10 years old, radio was going strong and
television was only a word people wondered about.
I was very aware that Bob Hope was a "thorn" in the backside of NBC.
On several occasions radio news commentators would talk about
Hope's latest risque comments on radio. I can't say that those radio
commentators were heard nation wide. They may have been local
broadcasts, but Hope WAS mentioned a number of times over the years
on radio for his "not staying on the straight and narrow." I even
remember one time listening to Hope and they cut him off near the end
of his broadcast. For the life of me I cannot remember what he said
that would cause that -- that happened over 60 years ago! But, living
in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area, there was talk among people about
"what's Hope gonna do next?" NBC may have cut him off the air any
number of times for risque material, but they knew damned well how
popular he was and how important he was to bringing in the money for
the network. So, instead of firing him, NBC would give him a "slap
across the wrists" verbally and let him go on bringing in the laughs.
I believe Hope was the only comedian on the air that consistently
told jokes with a double meaning. I could be wrong about this.
Correct me if I am, please. Because Hope was off color at times when
broadcasting, that simply made him more popular than ever with the
listening nation.

A short note on Red Skelton: One of my best friends, when I was
about 18, was Dave Meltzer. Dave's father was Lou Meltzer, one of Red
Skelton's top writers on Skelton's television show. Lou once told me
that before show time, Red would "warm up" the audience for about a
half hour. Red wanted to do this, it seems, because he not only loved
to perform, but it got him ready for the actual broadcast. These
"warm ups' were inevitably "filthy" beyond belief according to Lou.
The audiences loved it. But the minute it was air time, it was
straight and narrow for Skelton.

Subject: Hindenburg mis-statement

I was watching NBC Television news tonight and Lester Holt was speaking
about the Hindenburg disaster anniversary and NBC's role using Herb
Morrison's recording. I may not have his quote exactly
but it was something along the line of "NBC radio provided the first
coast to coast broadcast of a live [removed]"

I can never understand why people don't do their research properly it
certainly is easy enough to get the correct facts.

The annual Radio Classics Live two-day show at the Massasoit Community
College in Brockton, MA
was held this past weekend. Part of it was broadcast
on a local South-Shore radio station, WATD for
those of us unable to get out
to the venue. It was notable that Bob Elliott of Bob & Ray was to have
appeared,
but was unable to make it down from Maine due to illness. He was
elected the very first member to the new
New England Hall of Fame with the
late Ray Goulding. Ray's son, Tom, was there to celebrate and he and
a
local broadcaster, did a couple of Bob & Ray skits. NPR Radio did a live
interview with Bob by phone.
What a treasure they were! Tom Heathwood

No, Kermyt,
I did not work on any of Ted Sherdiman's Latitude Zero episodes. I sometimes
would use my access to the Sunset and Vine NBC studio H sponsors booth
situated upstairs just above the control booth to watch some of its
broadcasts. where I'd see and hear Lou Merriell shout out the show's title
into a specially built 5 foot tall by 6 foot long echo tunnel made of metal
for the echo effect it produced. I just remember the show was about a
submarine and its crew ostensibly based on Latitude Zero, never did mention
the Longitude intersection. We followed the subs voyage to it home base and
the adventures the crew sustained on that trip back to its base. It did live
up to its promise as I recall.
