This Week's Classics & Curios Show:
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 144
"CHUCK-WAGON JAMBOREE" WITH KEN CURTIS
Among favorite comedic characters ever on TV, ranking probably at or
near the top are Ken Curtis and Don Knotts with their creations of
Festus Haggen and Barney Fife. Both actors demonstrated acting genius in
their character portrayals on "Gunsmoke" and "The Andy Griffith Show,"
respectively. While Don had been a ventriloquist, stand-up comedian, and
the funny nervous character on "The Steve Allen Show," Ken Curtis began
by singing cowboy songs and later joined the Sons of The Pioneers. In
the 1940's he starred in his own eight western movies for Columbia.
Later he was hired by band leader Tommy Dorsey and made a couple of
recordings with Tommy in 1941 before he apparently was "loaned" to sing
with the Shep Fields orchestra, which, by the way, had Sid Caesar on sax.
Before officially joining "Gunsmoke" in 1964 Ken appeared in several TV
westerns, including "Gunsmoke," and in several John Ford films over the
years, such as "Rio Grande" and the great "The Searchers" in 1956 in
which he played Charlie McCorry, a country hayseed character courting
Vera Miles' Laurie Jorgensen. Concerning Ken Curtis the man,
"Gunsmoke's" James Arness is quoted as saying, "...Ken was one of the
sweetest and kindest men I [removed]"
Prior to "Gunsmoke" it was Ken's singing talent that led to appearances
on several radio shows, such as "Hollywood Barn Dance," and he was
selected by Teleways Radio Productions to star in a fifteen minute radio
series called "Chuck-Wagon Jamboree," resulting in some 131 shows. Ken,
with his smooth, clear, tenor voice and winsome personality carried the
show, which featured talented folks like The Five Novelty Aces. The
songs on the show are traditional, positive, and fun and always included
a hymn time of praise and a "Memory Medley." The show reminds me a
little of the great Light Crust Doughboys' early radio programs, with
Milton Brown, Bob Wills, and Smokey Montgomery.
So on this episode of Classics & Curios Ken Curtis takes the spotlight
as he sings "sky" tunes like "The Western Sky," "Where the Mountains
Meet the Sky," and "Goldmine in the Sky." We'll hear three shows in all
with ballads like "Carry Me Back to the Lone Prairie" and barbershop
songs like "Alabamy Bound" and "Moonlight and Roses." Two Stephen Foster
songs are included as well: "Gentle Annie" and "Old Dog Tray." Each show
features hymns like "Come Now, Our Mighty King," "When It's Prayer Time
in the Hollow," and even "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
There's much more as the Novelty Aces help Ken with such songs of Texas
as "Deep in the Heart of Texas," "Texas Ain't Texas Anymore," and "San
Antonio Rose."
So sit back and maybe even sing along with the gang as we tune in two
"Chuck-Wagon Jamboree" shows from 1950 and one from 1948. As the show's
theme song declares, "Let's be happy, gather 'round, 'cause it's time
for you and me to sing a song, as we jog along to the "Chuck-Wagon
Jamboree."
