Subject: Claudia

In the discussion of 15 minute shows, nobody has yet mentioned one of my
favorites, Claudia. This was a 15 minute daytime serial, but it was not a
soap opera. In a technical sense, it certainly wasn't, as it was sponsored by
"Your Friendly Neighbor Who Bottles Coca Cola." Additionally, it had none of
the usual trappings of daytime soaps--no amnesiacs, or cold hearted bankers
hoping to seize the mortgage, or scheming gold-diggers hoping to corner the
heroine's misguided fiance inter marrying her instead. Instead, it's the
fairly straightforward tale of a newlywed couple living in New York City,
dealing with the rater ordinary ups and downs of married life. It's told with
warmth, strong characterization, and humor. It's furthermore quite unusual
among daytime serials in that the entire run survives--something like 450
episodes. First Generation Radio Archives has acquired these discs, and has
released the first 80 episodes, with another set of 40 more
forthcoming. I have no personal financial interest in FGRA, but I do admit a
selfish interest in mentioning this show (which I don't think has ever been
discussed on this forum)--namely because if the current sets don't sell, we
won't ever see the remaining 300+ episodes. Which I think would be a real
pity, because this really is a quality show, and deserves to be much better
known among radio aficionados. Most other serials are in fragmentary
shape--it's so nice and rewarding to be able to listen to a show knowing that
you can hear tomorrow's episode, well, tomorrow, if you want. (I should add
that the actors who play Claudia and David have a remarkable chemistry--when
the script calls for them to laugh and break up, you can tell they're not
faking it--they really do seem to enjoy each other's company.)

Some of you may have heard the audition disc for Claudia that Coolcat Randy
posted on his blog a while back. This was interesting, but it featured very
different actors than the series ended up having. Somehow it's always jarring
hearing favorite roles played by the "wrong" actor! (You sense that the show
never would've last 450 episodes with those two.)

As a fairly recent Fibber and Molly fan, (Last 15 years or so) The following
is just supposition on my part:

First, without getting into why Molly was absent, which has been covered
here more than once, I think its possible that Molly didnt want her name on
it, to make it easier on the rest of the cast, so the audience wasnt
thinking "Where's Molly" or "wish she was here, [removed]

Second, as it was still fairly early in the series, it wasnt exactly a given
that Fibber and Company, under any name, would be the long time hit that it

Third, It may not have been certain that Molly would return at [removed] that
case, Fibber McGee and Company certainly wouldnt have lasted more than a few

Subject: Fibber McGee & Co

Here's something I have often wondered about. Why, in Molly's absence while
ill, they did not continue to call it "The Fibber McGee, and Molly Show,"
instead of "Fibber, and Company." I would think they should have done that
out of respect for Molly, if nothing else.

I know I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but wasn't the official name of
the program "THE JOHNSON'S WAX PROGRAM" ???
Fibber McGee & Co. was a way informing that Molly wasn't on the show.

Harlow Wilcox would open with "The Johnson's Wax Program with Fibber
McGee & Molly", but when Molly ( Marion Jordan) wasn't on the show
Harlow opened with "The Johnson's Wax Program with Fibber McGee &
Company" Molly's not on the show.

1932 Vic and Sade debuted on the NBC Blue network this day.

1947 Radio's show with a heart made its debut. Strike It Rich became a
favorite on CBS. Todd Russell was the original host. Warren Hull took
over a few years later.

1951 Bill Stern did his last 15 minute program of sports features for
NBC. Stern had been with NBC for 14 years. He later moved to the Mutual
Broadcasting System to finish out an illustrious sportscasting career.

6/30

1921 Documents were signed forming the Radio Corporation of America,
better known as RCA. RCA soon rivaled its main competitor, General
Electric (GE).

7/1

1934 The Federal Communications Commission, as mandated in the
Communications Act of 1934, replaced the Federal Radio Commission as the
regulator of broadcasting in the United States.

7/2

1939 The Aldrich Family debuted on NBC.

1946 CBS signed Arthur Godfrey to do a weekly nighttime show.

1940 The legendary comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello debuted
with their network show on NBC.

1945 NBC gave the comedian/pianist Victor Borge his own the summer
replacement show for Fibber McGee and Molly. He had been heard a few
years earlier as a semi regular on NBC's "Kraft Music Hall" with Bing
Crosby.

7/4

1943 The Rhythm Boys, Bing Crosby, Al Rinker and Harry Barris, were
reunited for the first time since the 1930s on Paul Whiteman Presents on
NBC.

1951 Jack Webb, along with Dragnet, also did a summer show that of
Pete Kelly. Pete Kelly's Blues, a crime drama, was the summer

Adventures in music / biographical titles
Let's sing / for in-school listening and singing
Each in his own voice / instruments of the orchestra

These were produced by various "schools of the air", 1940s and 1950s.
Minnesota School of the Air has many titles, and there are a few from the
Indiana School of the Sky, and the Texas School of the Air.

Old Tales and New came from the Minnesota School of the Air. This was a
15-minute progam of fairy tales, most of them originals written and directed
by Betty Girling and starring many
students from the University of Minnesota. My collection came from open
reel tapes distributed by the American Printing House for the Blind by way
