Subject: Richard Wagner's Ring
Does anyone know if Wagner's four-opera cycle The Ring was ever presented as
a dramatic radio program? I don't mean broadcasts of the operas themselves,
but an actual adaptation of the story.

Subject: Same [removed] Being Heard on Another Network
Hi Gang:
Yes, I know I haven't posted in quite but I'd like to take this opportunity
to let everyone here on the Digest know that I can now be contacted at my new
e-mail address which is [thatderek@[removed]].
The reason for the change is because my long association with the Talking
Book Productions at American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) here in New York
City comes to an end this coming Wednesday (23rd), three days shy of the
twentieth anniversary of my 26th September 1989 start date. It was always fun
speaking with clients, subscribers, and listeners/readers of Talking Books at
various OTR conventions over the years. Since OTR has always been a
blind-friendly hobby and endeavour, it is safe to say that there exists a
great crossover appeal between OTR and audio recordings of books. Some of the
great Talking Book narrators made their primary living from radio and
voice-overs and I had the pleasure and privilege of having joined AFB at the
tail end of an era where I actually got to work in-studio with some OTR
hangers-on.
I worked on both Robert Donley's and Ralph Bell's last books. There was also
Helen Harrelson and Earle Hyman, who are both very much alive. However, there
was also a second generation of actors who appeared in some 1970s retro-OTR,
such as Gordon Gould, Catherine Byers, and Barbara Caruso, who all appeared
on "The CBS Radio Mystery Theatre" throughout the 1970s, and the incomparable
Suzanne Toren, the "First Lady of Talking Books," who appeared in a few
episodes of "The Eternal Light" also in the 1970s (incidentally, it's
Suzanne's voice you hear dubbing in the voice of Gertrude Berg reading
recipes over the radio in Yiddish near the beginning of the Aviva Kempner
documentary "Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg").
One of my biggest regrets is that we never received from the Library of
Congress many OTR-themed books to record. Usually, such were either recorded
in-house in Washington (such as Jack French's "Private Eyelashes" and John
Dunning's "On the Air") or were sent to other providers located in
Louisville, Denver, and Bethesda, Maryland. As one-time producer of "Talking
Book Topics," an audio magazine that served as a catalogue of new titles, I'd
seethe with envy when I saw other OTR books having been sent "to the
provinces," We did, however, have fun with Joan Benny's "Sunday Nights at
Seven" (read by the aforementioned Suzanne Toren), Mel Blanc's autobiography
"That's NOT All, Folks!" (read by my pal and co-cruciverbalist Christopher
Hurt), and Melvin Patrick Ely's book on "Amos 'n' Andy" (read by the late
John Stratton).
Please rest assured that Library of Congress will still be commissioning
Talking Books. They just won't be recorded by AFB any longer. AFB will be
moving from 11 Penn Plaza across the street to 2 Penn Plaza with less office
space, and without the Talking Book department and some other departments
that are being relocated to our satellite office in Huntington, West Virginia.
The last title to leave Dodge after a 74-year run is a very dry narrative
about anthro-archaeology titled "The Horse, the Wheel, and Language: How
Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World," by
David W. Anthony (catalogue number RC 67273), read by Ken Kliban. Ken is an
actor who the brother of the late "Cats" cartoonist B. Kliban; he's also a
tremendous OTR fan who can do a dead-on Frank Nelson impersonation. Once Ken
and I broke into an impromptu version of "Si-Sy-Sue" with him as Mel Blanc
and me feeding him Jack Benny's straight-lines -- much to the delight of a
buncha twenty-something co-workers who had never heard it before.
Well, everybody, you haven't gotten rid me. I'll be at FOTR next month and
until I find a new job, I hope to have some free time to indulge more so in
the OTR hobby and on this here "OTR Digest." I'm also available for my
sideline doing NYC-centered research -- please contact me off-list at my new
e-mail [thatderek@[removed]].
So for probably the last time, I'm going to leave all you fellow Digest-ers
with one of my non-"ether" sign-offs:
"These books are made for talkin'!"

Subject: Sorry, Tonto, no birth [removed]
I previously posted that a MWOTRC member in Erie, PA, Mark Anderson,
had agreed to try and locate the birth certificate of Fred McCarthy,
who under his professional name of John Todd, played Tonto on the
long-running Lone Ranger series, as well as other characters in
WXYZ's adventure shows.
Fred's relatives are certain he was born in or near Crossingville, PA
and probably on August 14, 1876. His parents were Dennis and Sarah,
Irish immigrants. The problem is he "changed" his age a few times,
including reducing it so he could enlist in the military. Even his
Social Security records show only a date of death, not date of birth.
During the last four weeks, Anderson has traveled the rural roads of
that area by bike and by foot. He's searched all available records,
including some on the Internet, assisted by Irene Heinstein. Bottom
line: Tonto's birth certificate cannot be found. It's not in any
county records nor church baptismal archives. (Erie County records
only go back to 1906.) [removed] Census records of that period reflect
numerous heads of household named "Dennis McCarthy" but none with a
son named "Fred" or variations.
Anderson visited the gravesite of the McCarthy family in the cemetery
of St. James parish in Crossingville and photographed the marker.
Beneath that family marker lie Dennis, Sarah and four of their eight
children: Winnie, Eva, Fred, and Leo. Fred's name is accompanied by
only "1876-1957."
Alas, nothing more could be learned about this radio [removed]

Subject: The Brighter Day
Perhaps someone can answer this. Was the opening "Our years are as the
falling [removed] live, we love, we dream - and then we go. But somehow we
keep hoping, don't we, that our dreams will come true on that brighter day"
used both on radio and TV? When was it used? I think I've heard it once but
can't recall where. The six surviving radio episodes don't have it. P&G
claimed it had one TV ep. It hasn't been on any of the clips I've seen. Two
more questions - are there any other known extant radio episodes, and does
anyone know if there is a recording of the final TV ep from late September
1962?

I've recently received some radio cassettes with programs I can't
seem to find air dates on. One of them is "The Man Who Could Work
Miracles" on which I need an air date. I also need an episode guide
for "The Adventures of Superman". The names of the eps which were
provided are difficult to locate. If anyone has any information on where
I can find such information, please let me know off list.
As always,
