I mostly experienced Arnold Stang as a dopy looking character on
Uncle Miltie's program His role on Bonanza was quite different and
fun to watch. Thank you to Nick at Nite.

He may have been dopy looking, but as Francis the stagehand, he got
off some really great insult lines against Uncle Miltie. Berle was
reduced to being Stang's straight man.

Subject: Re: Lanny Ross

Regarding the recent Lanny Ross thread.
I can't shed any light on his early career, but I did get to meet the man
when I appeared as Lanny's guest on his TV show.

It was during the very early days of NBC's (NY) beginning to experiment with
daytime TV broadcasting. My best recollection was the very early 50's. Radio
was still "King"...but starting to lose it's luster to the new
"entertainment" medium. All Radio Programs were still on the air. But NBC
was making some attempts to also start filling daytime air time with TV
programs that could originate out of some of the smaller Radio Studios. They
had already converted one of the Larger studios on the 6th floor for the
"Tonight Show", and [removed] were using some of the smaller 3rd floor
ones for "filler" programming that didn't require scenery or studio
audiences.

Lanny Ross, by then, was in the twilight of his career. (Coincidentally, so
were radio programs, but we didn't know it at the time). NBC hired Lanny
Ross to do a 15 minute daily program, consisting of a song or two, and some
chatter with a guest performer. Mostly, with people and other artists he
knew and worked with over his long career.

Somebody in NBC Sales (and Promotion) got the bright idea to promote the
Archie Andrews radio show, using Television to do it. So, "Jughead" was
invited to be a guest on the "Lanny Ross Show".

It was surreal, here I was, sitting next to Lanny, (a very nice and warm
individual) talking about my career (and the Archie show) as if it were some
big deal.

In those days, maybe 15 people saw the show. (I'm kidding) But it couldn't
be very many. To begin with, not very many people had TV sets at that point
in time, and as I recall, it was a daytime [removed] most people home
during the day were probably still hooked on "listening" to the "Soaps".

But I did enjoy the experience, and understood why Mr. Ross was so popular
during his earlier career. He had a very pleasing voice. Looked a little
like a cross between Nelson Eddy and Jack Parr, and his "Nice Guy" persona
was very evident. At least, that what I remember from over half a century
ago. Geeeze! Has it been that long.

This lengthy angst thread, searching for the true explanation of the
Portugal sponsorship gag from Stan Freberg, could have been resolved
quickly by my grandmother. She always said, "If you haffta explain a
joke, then it ain't funny, so it ain't a joke."

Subject: Henry Morgan and MAD
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I asked here some years ago about the name of MAD's Alfred E. Neuman
deriving from Henry Morgan's radio show but got no response. I later
tried asking MAD editor Al Feldstein, and he drew a complete blank.

But now I have some more information, a quote from MAD's founder,
Harvey Kurtzman: "The name Alfred E. Neuman was picked up from Alfred
Newman, the music arranger from back in the 1950s and 1940s.
Actually, we borrowed the name indirectly through THE HENRY MORGAN
SHOW. He was using the name Alfred Newman for an innocuous character
that you'd forget in five minutes. So we started using the name
Alfred Neuman. The readers insisted on putting the name and the face
together, and they would call the 'What, Me Worry?' face Alfred Neuman."

So now the questions are: What did this character do on Morgan's
program? Who was the actor who portrayed him? And what was the
connection of the MORGAN SHOW character with composer Alfred Newman?

Probably more than you wanted to know, but easily found.

-Not too much for me Jim, I grew up watching Bill and his local movie show.
I was always a little proud to have the Superman TV announcer as a local
celebrity. There was mention a few weeks back of Dick Osgood as pertains to
his book on WXYZ. Osgood was a regular guest on Bill's show, as were the
many celeb pals he had, who'd stop in when they were in town.
I was always greatly interested in Hollywood as a historical topic, with
many books on the subject (for a kid of 10+ I had a lot) and Bill Kennedy
was a great source of anecdotal [removed] of them possibly true! (;-D
