Subject: The Columbia Network no longer "Chirps"
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
One day in the last week in July 2009, CBS Radio silenced the "chirp"
forever. That wonderful bird sound could be heard at the top of every hour on
a Columbia station - "[removed]". The network chirped at the 3 minute mark
to start the commercial and at the 5 minute mark to start the last commercial.
I think it even chirped at the very end of the hourly broadcast - This is
Christopher Glenn, CBS [removed] In the 60's I believe the chirp was the
CBS cue to start the cart machines containing commercials for various sections
of the nation.
In communicating with Columbia Radio engineers, they inform me that the old
automation system that produced the chirp sound was replaced with a newer one
that has no audible sound. Yet I can still hear a "click-click" at the end of
the first three minutes of the news "format" segment. The sound intrigued me
so I asked what it was. They said it was the sound of a computer key manually
depressed by the CBS Anchor to start the commercials. The commercials can
start automatically after two seconds of dead air, but most CBS Anchors want
to run a "tight" broadcast so they start it themselves by depressing the key.
The "click-click" sounds very much like when I depress the swithch in my Ford
Focus to turn on the rear window defroster. Sometimes the anchor will allow
the automation to do the work and no click is heard.
CBS RADIO CHIRP XXXX - July 2009. I will truly miss this little bird that
has set my watch for decades. May she Rest In Peace. [removed] Mike
Paraniuk, owner of 100 CBS/Columbia Radios and 8 CBS/Columbia Televisions.
Been listening to watching the Columbia Broadcasting System since 1955.

Subject: Shadow episode
Hopefully a list member can point me in the right direction. I hope this
isn't along the line of "Remember the Twilight Zone where John Wayne and
Fatty Arbuckle were trapped on Mars with a Cuban Bandleader and his zany
wife?"
Sometime in the past year I believe I heard a Shadow episode that involved a
scientist that reanimated a dead gangster, who promptly killed the doctor,
the used his reanimation juice to revive several of his buddies to go on a
crime spree. My impression was "Huh. Hadn't heard that before."
I can't seem to find the digital file to replay it, so if it is a Shadow, it
may be misnamed. Does this ring a bell and if so, is it a Shadow (and what is
the title), or is it another series and I am just thinking Shadow?
Thanks in advance.

Charlie, thanks for your story about Les Paul. I had the great pleasure of
interviewing Les for Nostalgia Digest Magazine and I'm hard pressed to think
of anyone I've interviewed--ever--who was so generous with his time and
memories. (And--as you might expect from someone who jammed with the likes of
Art Tatum and Lester Young--he was a very good listener as well.) Eventually,
we had to break the article into two parts and it's still one of the
highlights of my journalism career.
And of course, he made "How High The Moon" which remains an absolute pinnacle
of recorded music. He will be missed.

To clarify, the new GREEN HORNET movie will NOT be based on the radio series
at all. It is based on the 26 TV episodes that were produced by William
Dozier. They have four different scripts, each ranging different levels of
serious to comedy and they don't yet know which will be filmed or if alternate
scenes from others will be filmed and all edited together.
As for the casting, for the past three months I've seen actors hired
(literally signed in ink) and then back out, actors "supposedly" hired but
that was "speculation" and actors that are being confirmed on web-sites but
really have not confirmed at all. Rather than browse multiple sites claiming
they have the latest info, it is perhaps best to wait till March when they
have the teaser trailer made and the casting is then official ([removed] appears in
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY which avoids internet web-site postings and goes directly
to the source). Seriously, what you read today regarding casting may not be at
all what is contracted as of next month.

Subject: Prevailing opinions
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
I don't know about prevailing opinions regarding the advent of TV, and
whether it would outshine OTR. I believe that, depending on who you asked
at the time, the opinions would differ. You must remember that radio was an
established medium at the time and had been around long enough to garner
its fair share of fans. TV, however, was a new medium altogether and was
(from what I've seen) primitive at best with a small viewership, and not as
much
variety as the radio programs of that time.
Some people would have viewed it as a passing fad, while others would
have seen (and taken advantage of) its future uses and benefits. It's my
opinion,
however, that such things run in waves. Remember if you will, that
vaudeville
at one time was the main entertainment medium and radio was considered 'just
a passing fad'. Then radio became the 'medium of choice' for everything from
news
programs to entertainment, until television came along. Sooner or later,
something
will come along to replace it.
As far as whether radio actors/actresses would be able to succeed on
TV,
that point is debatable. Many of them who were successful on radio (and even
had
their own shows) weren't as successful on television. There was a lot that
actors
could accomplish on radio programs which wouldn't translate to television
(largely
because radio programs could control what their audiences heard and the
effects
they used to emphasize their plots). Television programs, however, allowed
their
audiences to see and interpret the stories for themselves.
Some radio programs translated well to the new medium of television,
while
others did not. Some of the programs which did succeed are now considered
classics
and are revered as being 'some of the most groundbreaking programs of their
era'.
Who knows what medium will replace, or just reinvent the television
medium
in the future?
As always,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Les Paul - Did he?
This has bothered me for some time, not to take anything away from
Mr. Paul who was a real force on the music scene for years,
My question. With any mention of his name, Les Paul is always
credited with inventing the electric guitar, though it's my
understanding that Alvino Rey came up with and was playing an
electric guitar as far back as the late twenties, early thirties
which would seem to pre-date Les Paul's contribution. Can someone who
really knows clear up who did what?

I've heard that there were several notable 'feuds' between OTR
personalities.
We've all heard about the one which existed between Fred Allen and Jack Benny
(although some have told me that the two were actually friends and the feud
was just a gimmick of sorts to boost ratings).
One of the feuds I've heard which got pretty heated was the one
between
columnists Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons. I believe each one worked for
a different news syndicate as well. Was this an actual feud between the two
columnists
or just a way to boost their own ratings? Were they as mean toward each other
when in public or was this just something they both did when they were behind
the
microphones doing their respective shows?
