I suddenly wondered whether Superman
had ever found his way into space.
Devon Wilkins.
Dear Devon-
The short answer is, "yes."
In the comic book; on the radio; in the movies; and even in the George
Reeves TV show that you cite.
Best,

Subject: Superman In Space
Hi, everyone. As a kid, I used to love watching Superman on TV, and I do
intend to get some OTR episodes shortly, too. But last night, while the news
was giving us a summary of the latest preparations for the next Canadian
astronaut to fly on the space shuttle, I suddenly wondered whether Superman
had ever found his way into space. I know that as an infant, he hurtled to
Earth in a space ship from a distant planet, but I'm wondering whether he ever
had any other occasion to go into space. Thanks. Devon Wilkins.
Yes Devon Superman DID go into Space. The Series (that I have) is "The
Mystery of the Lost Planet" and went from April 9 to April 25 1947. The
story was also done earlier (in 1944 I think) but I do not have any info on
it at this time

Thanks to Ken Greenwald for his detailed answer
I was hoping that the YTJD theme was a classical piece so I could obviously
find the [removed] and perhaps a full, beautifully sounding rendition done
with the latest recording techniques.
I know at one time someone had compiled all of the classical music used on
the Lone Ranger on a couple of reels; I was hoping for something similar here.
Not many people are aware how much music costs to license and the thorny
issues involved; that's one of the reasons, for example, why WKRP in
Cincinnati is so rarely seen in reruns; clearing the music is too much of an
issue.
The way around it was to use as much public domain music as possible, or to
use easily licensed items, just like the stock photo business has become
today. The latter has so many royalty-free or low-royalty items that it's
incredibly easy to access. But the music business has not even come close to
adopting that kind of business model. It's a shame, because so much of TV
especially is vaulted up because of it.
Thank you again, Ken, for solving this "mystery" --- send your expense
account to the usual address :)

I know that some of the music used on the Bailey shows was also featured on
NBC programs such as Dimension X, Tales of the Texas Rangers and Nero Wolfe.
I believe that Robert Armbruster was the composer for that music. I also
recognize some music that later appeared on television in Perry Mason, The
Twilight Zone and Gunsmoke, among others. Bernard Herrmann and Lucien
Moraweck
composed much of that music for CBS as well.

I suddenly wondered whether Superman had ever found his way into
space. I know that as an infant, he hurtled to Earth in a space
ship from a distant planet, but I'm wondering whether he ever had
any other occasion to go into space.
Quite often. It was established pretty early in the comics that
Superman could fly in space, apparently unbothered by radiation or
lack of air, and he used that capability often. I haven't seen a
Superman comic book in awhile, but he probably still does.
I don't know about the radio show, but on the TV episode "Panic in
the Sky," a strange asteroid had gotten into orbit about the earth
and was causing quakes and tidal waves. Superman went up and pushed
it into a different orbit and got amnesia in the process. It was
still a danger to earth, and Clark, not remembering anything but
figuring out by what people were telling him, eventually realized
that he was Superman and took an explosive up to the asteroid that
scientists had prepared. It worked, and the blast restored his
memory. So he made it into space twice in one episode, but I don't
think otherwise in the TV show.
The episode "Panic in the Sky" was re-made as an episode of "Lois and
Clark," though I don't know the title.

The latest "Golden Age of Radio" programs with Dick Bertel
and Ed Corcoran, can be heard at [removed].
Each week we feature three complete shows in MP3 format
for your listening pleasure or for downloading; two "Golden
Age of Radios" and one "A One Night Stand" with Arnold
Dean. We present new shows every week or so. The current
three programs will be available on line at least until the
morning of 9/5/06.
For the next few weeks we will feature "The Golden Age of
Radio" programs only.
In a few weeks we will continue our series "A One Night
Stand with the Big Bands" shows in the order in which they
were originally broadcast.
Program 73 - April, 1976 - Martha Raye
Martha Raye was born Margaret Yvonne Teresa Reed on
August 27, 1916 in Butte, Montana. From her Vaudeville
stage debut at age three, Martha Raye went on to conquer
literally every entertainment medium -- stage, screen, radio,
television, records, night clubs, as well as countless
performances for her beloved Armed Forces.
Program 74 - May, 1976 - Robert Montgomery
Robert Montgomery, the noted Hollywood actor and director,
recalls his career in radio. Born Henry Montgomery Jr. in
Beacon, New York, his early childhood was one of privilege,
since his father was President of the New York Rubber
Company. When his father died, the family's fortune was
gone, and young Robert went to New York City to try his
hand at writing and acting. Sharing a stage with George
Cukor gave him an in to Hollywood, where, in 1929, he
debuted in So This is College. In his early career, from the
late '20s to the early '40s, Montgomery was an amiable light
comedian and dramatic actor, appearing in almost 40 sound
films before 1935.
Program 75 - June, 1976 - Jim Maloney
Jim Maloney began his network acting career in the late
1940s, appearing in such shows as "The Aldrich Family",
and "Aunt Jenny - Real Life Stories", among others.
The Aldrich Family was a popular radio teenage situation
comedy from 1939 through 1953. In 1941, the program
carried a [removed] Crossley rating which placed it solidly in
the top ten alongside Jack Benny and Bob Hope. First heard
as a summer replacement for Jack Benny, it began on Sunday,
July 2, 1939 on NBC, where it ran until October 1, 1939.
Based on Clifford Goldsmith's Broadway play "What a Life,"
this teenage situation comedy ranks among the very best and
the opening "Coming Mother" line became one of radio's
most famous catchphrases.
In the 1970's WTIC decided that there was a market in
the evening for long-form shows that could be packaged
and sold to sponsors. Two of those shows were "The
Golden Age of Radio" and "A One Night Stand with the
Big Bands."
Dick Bertel had interviewed radio collector-historian
Ed Corcoran several times on his radio and TV shows,
and thought a regular monthly show featuring interviews
with actors, writers, producers, engineers and musicians
from radio's early days might be interesting. "The Golden
Age of Radio" was first broadcast in April, 1970; Ed was
Dick's co-host. It lasted seven years. "The Golden Age
of Radio" can also be heard Saturday nights on Walden
Hughes's program on Radio Yesteryear.
Arnold Dean began his love affair with the big band
era in his pre-teen years and his decision to study
the clarinet was inspired by the style of Artie Shaw.
When he joined WTIC in 1965 he hosted a daily program
of big band music. In 1971, encouraged by the success
of his daily program and "The Golden Age of Radio"
series, he began monthly shows featuring interviews
with the band leaders, sidemen, agents, jazz reporters,
etc. who made major contributions to one of the great
eras of music history.

In response to Devon's question about Superman returning to outer space - I
can give one example. As I was doing research for one of our recent Superman
collections (Superman: Son of Krypton - item #43662) I came across an episode
called "Mystery of the Flying Monster" that was broadcast on 3/7/49. He goes
to space to save Jimmy Olsen, who went in search of a story about a rocket
scientist and found himself launched in a rocket that was missing a crucial
component of its control system.
