Hey thanks for the link. I'll be listening! I love the fact that I can get
these shows on my cellphone! It's like having a time machine in my pocket!
Here's another of my favorite streaming links: www,[removed]
They've got a very nice selection of free mp3 shows including episodes of
Duffy's Tavern (I'm a big fan of Eddie the Waiter!)
Anybody know of a website that streams the Jubilee black wartime jazz/variety
shows hosted by Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman?

Subject: When Radio Was
Rick asks,
does anyone know why the show has always been about 45
minutes in length, giving us one half hour show and the first half of
another
show (usually a comedy?)? Wouldn't it make more sense to make it a full
hour, giving us two full shows (or one hour-long program)?
Unfortunately, radio today demands more commercial time in its programs
that it did back then. The NAB radio code (which is not a legal
requirement and is no longer enforced by the NAB, as I understand it)
allows 18 minutes per hour of commercials. I don't know what the limit
was in the days of OTR, but most radio shows had an opening commercial, a
middle commericial, and a closing commercial. Nowhere near nine minutes
in a half-hour show.
So if you run an OTR show today, you have to either cut out a large chunk
of the program to make room for more commercial minutes, or you have to
expand the overall time of the show so that a half-hour show becomes a
35-minute show, including commercials. PLUS you have to add more time if
you're going to add any modern-day commentary, even if you limit it to
new intros and outros by a host. Giving lengthy background info or
throwing in a short interview will expand the show well beyond that
original half-hour. So all you can do in an hour time slot is run a show
and a half. Be thankful you're getting that extra half thrown in!

From Those Were The Days --
8/31
1941 - The Great Gildersleeve, a spin-off of Fibber McGee and Molly,
started on NBC.
1946 - "Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!"
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound ... the caped crusader
returned to radio on the Mutual Broadcasting System. Superman had been
dropped from the program schedule earlier in the year, but the outrage
of youngsters brought the show back to the airwaves. Wow! The amazing
power of Kryptonite in the hands of kids! Bud Collyer, later of TV's
Beat the Clock, played Clark Kent aka Superman on the series. His
identity had been well guarded for years. Most people didn't have a clue
as to the identity of Superman until a TIME magazine article about
Collyer appeared in 1946.
9/1
1922 - The first daily news program on radio was The Radio Digest, on
WBAY. The program, hosted by George F. Thompson, the program's editor,
originated from New York City.
9/2
1931 - 15 Minutes with Bing Crosby debuted on CBS.
9/5
1938 - The NBC Red network broadcast Life Can Be Beautiful for the first
time. The program was "an inspiring message of faith drawn from life."
The program aired until 1954.
9/6
1920 - The first prizefight broadcast on radio featured Jack Dempsey
knocking out Billy Miske in the third round of a bout in Benton Harbor,
MI. Radio station WWJ in Detroit was the station that fight fans were
tuned to.

Subject: The Lone Ranger's Look to the Future
Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 22:01:47 -0400
From: "Jim Nixon" <ranger6000@[removed];
The episode is, "A Look To the Future", Jan. 4, 1950. In it, the
Lone Ranger, attempting to infiltrate Ace Perigon's gang, is
captured by Perigon's men just after completing a disguise but
before re-donning his mask.
That's the episode. And "Ace Perigon" is the name which is mentioned
in Jim Harmon's book. Jim apparently was looking at an earlier
script because in the actual episode, the name is "Ace Lattimer."
Sometime back in the 1950s -- later than 1950, so I think it was when
the Lone Ranger radio show was in reruns -- I came into the
livingroom and found my father listening to the tail end of this
particular episode. I already had read the Lone Ranger's origin
story in a comic book. But the comic book never mentioned the LR's
first name. When I heard that the federal agent in this episode knew
the Lone Ranger's name, I asked my father if they had said the LR's
first name. My father replied that his name was John Reid.
And so, I wasn't at all surprised when the 1980 movie used that name.
And when the discussion about the LR's name first surfaced on this
forum some years ago, I asserted, based on what my father had said,
that the name John Reid had in fact been used in that episode.
Others disagreed with me, and someone sent me a tape of the episode.
And, indeed, the name "John Reid" is not mentioned anywhere.
So I am left to wonder where my dad got the name John Reid from.
Unfortunately, I can no longer ask him.

Charlie Summers has recently finished the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia
Convention DVDs and they are now available for purchase, for anyone who
missed last year's event.
[removed]
Charlie put a lot of time and effort into producing the discs, so when
someone is speaking or presenting, their name and credit appears on the
screen, as well as split screen captures and other tricks that make these a
notch above anything I have seen. Full color case, color discs and more.
They will also be available at MANC for sale for anyone interested.
Closing note: while we will have this year's events filmed as usual, just
like previous years, not all of the events or presentations are going to be
offered on DVD after the convention concludes. This happens for multiple
reasons (legal permissions granted to us for use of film clips limits us to
the presentation itself, not retail sale on DVD is one of those examples). So
if you get a chance to attend the event, please do so you can be assured you
will not miss anything.
