    ADMINISTRIVIA:

We take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the
communication below, expressing at the same time our great
gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends
of The Sun:

Dear Editor, I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it's so."
Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?
         Virginia O'Hanlon
         115 West Ninety-fifth St.

VIRGINIA, Your little friends are wrong. They have been affected
by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except
they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible
by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or
children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere
insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world
about him, as measured by the intelligence of grasping the whole of
truth and knowledge

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love
and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and
give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would
be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as
if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then,
no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should
have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with
which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies!
You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on
Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa
Claus coming down what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus but
that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things
in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you
ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no
proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the
wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside,
but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest
man, not even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever
lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance,
can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty
and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world
there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand
years from now, Virginia, nay ten times ten thousand years from now,
he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

there _is_ a Santa Claus, because she talked to him -

no matter what you are celebrating at this truly amazing time of the year,

People have written in regarding streets which are named
after OTR celebrities. I don't know of any of these in Dallas,
where I live, but we do have several streets just a few blocks
from here named after Disney cartoon characters.

          Some of these streets include:

Beauty Drive ("Beauty and the Beast")
Cinderella Street ("Cinderella")
Peter Pan Drive ("Peter Pan")
Snow White Street ("Snow White")

We (Dallas) even have a "Crooked Lane" (as in the nursery rhyme
"There was a crooked [removed]")

Our city sometimes uses a bit of humor when naming our streets.
Best example I can think of is Bobbitt Street, not too far from here. As
you might imagine, it's a very, very short street but is in a nice
neighborhood.

I believe that we also have a Lois Lane. Someone even told me
once that we had a Della Street, but I think he was pulling my leg.

Ron, this is a big question, please write to me off list and I will do my
best to help you. I am a huge GOON fan and I have various reference books
etc and a collection of all the known surviving shows. I can also send you
site links etc. The Goons is one of the shows still on air here in
Australia though Radio National have reduced the list for the coming year
and removed Just A Minute (British Comedy) from the lineup.

Please note, this is Christmas Eve in Australia and I am about to close up
for the Holiday, so you will not get an answer until early January.

Merry Christmas to all of you on THE DIGEST. I thank you for the

Eric Cooper asked if the average listener identified a particular
program with the station it was on or with the network. And while I'm
not any of the four persons that he mentioned as being best able to
answer his question, I doubt that at least 3 of those 4 people could be
described as an average listener back in the heyday of OTR.

I, on the other hand, used to dial into those very stations that he
mentioned daily, having been given my own radio ( a Philco cathedral )
at 7 years of age in 1943. I can tell you that I definitely identified
with the station call letters and frequency rather than the network from
which it originated. As a matter of fact I remember being confused about
where NBC programs were on the dial. Mostly I listened to NBC programs
on KFI, but sometimes I would tune into KECA and that was NBC too. I
understand now about the NBC Blue and Red networks but did not at that
age. When the Blue network became the ABC network it became simpler but
I still would tune to a station rather than a network to hear a
favorite program. Whether it was KFI or KNX or KECA or KHJ (Don Lee/
Mutual) there sure was alot of good shows coming in over that old radio.

2. I have a new e-mail address, had to do it because of the numerous junk

accompanied herself on the piano. What ever became of her? Is there
somewhere on the web that has a bio on her?

I have really enjoyed this list for some years now. I grew up with OTR and
miss a lot of the old shows, especially when I stayed home from school
every few weeks and caught up on the soap operas. I usually hadn't missed
much. My favorite was Ma Perkins and One Man's Family.

Subject: KNX or CBS??

Eric Cooper asked:

Would a person in the 1940s have said
"Turn on KFI, I want to hear "Archie Andrews", ( or KNX for > "Lux") or
would they have said "turn on NBC"?

Eric,

I can only tell you what I did when listening to the various
radio programs I wished to hear. I rather remember tuning into
my favorite programs by where I found them on the dial. *S*
And then after hearing (as per your example, Lux, for so many
weeks I remembered what day of the week it broadcast and where on
the big dial of our old Zenith I could find it. The same with
all the rest, therefore I never really had a feeling for the more
complicated designations [removed] CBS, MBS, NBC, either red and blue
networks. I heard my programs from where I found them on the
dial. So for me the individual would have had to have said,
"Turn on the Shadow, or Nick Carter, or Jack Benny."

Re those color network designators I remember once walking into
the old Don Lee studios on South Vermont. I seem to recall
seeing painted on the floor red and blue lines directing me to
the various studios that broadcast over those networks. (Im
still confused)

From a long time subscriber --

December 22, 1935 - The long running series, Metropolitan Opera
Auditions, premieres over NBC Red Network.

From Those Were The Days --

1906 - Professor Reginald A. Fessenden sent his first radio broadcast
from Brant Rock, MA. The program included a little verse, some violin
and a speech.

1928 - The first broadcast of The Voice of Firestone was heard. The
program aired each Monday evening at 8:00. The Voice of Firestone became
a hallmark in radio broadcasting. It kept its same night, time (in 1931
the start time changed to 8:30) and sponsor for its entire run.
Beginning on September 5, 1949, the program of classical and
semiclassical music was also seen on television.

1944 - The Andrews Sisters starred in the debut of The Andrews Sisters’
Eight-To-The-Bar-Ranch on ABC radio. Patty, Maxene and LaVerne ran a
fictional dude ranch. George ‘Gabby’ Hayes was a regular guest along
with Vic Schoen’s orchestra. The ranch stayed in operation until 1946.

In a message dated 12/21/01 5:04:48 PM Eastern Standard Time,
[removed]@[removed] writes:

1. What was the little girl's first name?

The episode of December 21, 1948 is titled "Christmas Card From Elizabeth".
Fibber spends nearly 30 radio minutes trying to figure out who Elizabeth is,
until Teeny tells him that it is her.

As a piece of sidebar trivia, Teeny once explained that her nickname was
short for "Martini, because as a baby I was never dry enough to suit my
father!"

2. What was Doc's first name?

I will give a clue in that both answers can be found towards the end of the
run. One answer is found in a 30 minute show, the other is not (at least
that I am aware of). You can find one answer by looking through a log. I
will give away the answer by saying that both references are found in
Christmas shows.

Now you're gonna make me dig out and listen to the episode of 12/22/55 titled
"Opening Doc's Christmas Cards", aren't you?
