Subject: Was my Times your Times?

On numerous occasions I have been reminded how dependent many of us
investigators are on the wealth of material published and archived by The
New York Times. Speaking strictly for me, I know of no other newspaper as
comprehensive, reliable and accurate for confirming little known and obscure
details that are a boon to researchers in diverse fields, including vintage
radio. I'm grateful that the journal launched as "The New-York Daily Times"
in 1851 has remained healthy in an era of rapidly diminishing print media.

My first exposure to that invaluable resource (with which I have no direct
link, incidentally) occurred a century after its birth. I had just entered
junior high school and had frequent opportunities to visit a very well
stocked school library in the nation's hinterland. On those shelves I
discovered the Sunday editions of The Times. I returned to the library
weekly to devour the pages of that fascinating publication, imagining what
big city life was all about. There were stories about people and events and
advertisements I never would have known about otherwise in the era in which
they were occurring.

Undoubtedly, however, the thing that caught my attention every time was the
daily radio listings for the various networks. I don't recall if this was
the first time I had seen them or if I had already run across the logs for
the four webs printed in Radio and Television Mirror, but together they
opened a new world to me. While we had stations affiliated with the four
chains in my town, sometimes those outlets replaced the regular network fare
with local and syndicated programming. My avid interest in broadcasting
continually made me wonder what people in other towns might be hearing that
we didn't. In those two publications, I found out.

I think reading The Times from then on through high school helped in
convincing me that I wanted to be either a radio actor or writer when I grew
up. It wasn't to be, of course; the golden age had passed when I claimed my
college baccalaureate degree, a possibility unthinkable in junior high.

I've often wondered if published stories about radio personalities, industry
decisions, listings and logs had as much effect on others as it did me.

Subject: Re: Cooper and Oboler

My hero, Martin Grams, Jr., wrote about "Quiet, Please":

Yes, the prose is first person narrative so it rarely is written
masterful and frankly, had Wyllis Cooper actually wrote the plot
ideas and Arch Oboler create the prose, the series would have
been top-notch. But the story is the most important part.

I generally agree with the rest of the post but -- wow, that's some
ungrammatical literary criticism.

The strange thing is that I always thought it should have been the
opposite, with Oboler pitching the plots and Cooper writing the
scripts. Mr. O often had the wild, attention-grabbing ideas (Synthetic
beast with vacuum cup feet created by gem thieves to climb up to a
penthouse? Hitler as a hitch-hiker? Chicken heart destroys the world?)
but his characters and dialogue are usually as subtle as a rock to the
head and could have used some of Cooper's thoughtful restraint.

In fact, Oboler is probably the least "writerly" of all the major OTR
writers -- maybe because he improvised most of his scripts into
Dictaphones and other recording devices. It's both a strength and a
weakness of his work -- he avoids formula and goes where his
imagination takes him, but he also sacrifices details and subtleties
by not keeping to the old adage that "the best writing is rewriting."
His stuff often plays better than it reads because he's not really a
conventional literary artist at all but a go-for-the-throat teller of
tall tales.

Cooper is sort of the reverse. He doesn't think "the story is the most
important part." He once said, "I don't believe in too strong a story
line because it's apt to be too hard for the listener to keep in mind
... The charm in radio consists of good characterization. Plot should
consist of a twist rather than a formalized structure." He tends to
stress character and atmosphere, often at the expense of other things
-- including clarity, pace, and logic -- and that sometimes puts
people off.
