I was listening to an episode of "The Adventures of Ellery Queen" which
starred Howard Culver as one of the players. I believe the name of the
episode was "The Diamond". I can honestly say that, although I've heard
quite a few actors from OTR perform on several different programs, his
performance on this program was among the best I've ever experienced.

As always,

Kenneth Clarke

Need help with a reference

The reference to O'Sullivan may be the brand of replacement rubber heels
for men's shoes. That was in the days before the souls & heel were
molded and you
wore a pair of shoes until they fell apart. Ask you local shoe repair
shop, if you can find one. If he's old enough he may remember

O'Sullivan was the trade name for rubber replacement heels for shoes (back

Subject: Tonto

The question was asked in the last Digest about how Tonto, the Lone Ranger's
Indian companion, got his name. The questioner pointed out that "Tonto" can
also mean "stupid" in Spanish. It was Fran Striker who struck upon the
name, and the explanation I've heard is that Fran was looking at a map of
the Southwest and spotted the Tonto National Forest. He thought the name
seemed appropriate and used it when Tonto joined the masked man after the
first few radio episodes. I've not seen any mention that George W. Trendle,
who owned the program, ever objected to the name.
However, when the first Lone Ranger theatrical serial was released by
Republic Pictures, the Spanish language version was dubbed using "Ponto"
instead of "Tonto" for just the same reason. Spanish audiences would have
thought the name connoted stupidity. And of course, this gave rise to the
scene wherein the masked man says to his sidekick: "Pronto, Ponto!"

Subject: "Brooklyn Pinafore" question
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Chris Holm's question (posted Sunday) reminded me of a question I
have had percolating around in my so-called mind. I have heard this
episode only once, and as something of a Gilbert and Sullivan fan
myself, I have wondered if Leo Durocher does his own singing in this
sketch. I thought his voice quite good for someone whose profession
probably involved no vocal/musical training, and I was wondering --
since the show was live -- if he did his own singing or whether his
singing was doubled by someone else.

I'd like to obtain as clean a copy as possible of that show -- and
also of the "Duffy's Tavern" episode in which Brace Beemer appeared.
Does anyone know where I can get copies of these?

I can't answer the question about how Tonto was given his name, but
the word "tonto" means "stupid" or "fool" in Spanish. This is
probably how it got into southwestern American Indian dialects.
Eventually, I believe Lone Ranger comics were distributed (in
Spanish) in Mexico. At that point Tonto's name was changed to Ponto.

	Many thanks.

	Fred Hillman

I am sure others will have the same answers to the two queries, however:

1. O'sullivan was a breand name of a shoe heel at a time when shoes were
re-soled and re-heeled to make them last. You would see ads for this brans in
magazine of the day.

2/ "Greenberg stayed at third" is a reference to an incident in the 1945
World Series. I believe. At one time it was also a gag on the Jack Benny
program.

Subject: Tonto

Regarding Ted's query about whether the Lone Ranger writers deliberately chose
the name "Tonto" based on it being the Spanish word for "foolish" or "stupid,"
there are folks who insist that "Kemo Sabe" is a corruption of the Spanish
phrase "quien no sabe," which loosely translates to "he who doesn't
understand,"
or, to use a modern-day term, "clueless."

Several years ago when late-night TV host David Letterman was having heart
surgery, guest host Bill Cosby did a whole opening monologue about how he grew
up a Lone Ranger fan but was taken aback later in life when somebody got him
hip
to the meaning of the Spanish terms "tonto" and "quien no sabe."

At least Bill Cosby believes this to be the case.

Yours in the ether,

Derek Tague
