I know that during his lifetime Bill Idelson kept involved in the
entertainment business in various ways. I don't know whether or not he made
a full-time living at it, though. Several years ago I saw him on an episode
of WILL & GRACE. And then the other night I was watching a re-run of a
M*A*S*H episode and Bill was credited as the writer. Does anyone know if he
actually did these kinds of things full-time?

Subject: Mel Blanc

With all the talk of Mel Blanc in recent digests, I have to mention that the
Golden Age of Radio - WTIC has a full hour dedicated to the man of many
voices. The program, which aired in August, 1974, included an interview and
excerpts from many radio shows on which he appeared.

Mel Blanc's ability to create voices for multiple characters first attracted
attention when he worked as a voice actor in radio. He was a regular on the
Jack Benny Program in various roles, including Benny's automobile (a Maxwell
in desperate need of a tune up), violin teacher Professor LeBlanc, Polly the
Parrot, and Benny's bear, Carmichael.

Blanc's success on the Jack Benny Program led to his own radio show on the
CBS radio network, The Mel Blanc Show, which ran from September 3, 1946 to
June 24, 1947. Blanc played himself as the hapless owner a fix-it shop, in
addition to a wide range of comical support characters. Go to

Subject: Re: THE ENGINEER botches the opening signature
 of The Shadow

John Olsen asks:

I was listening to the Shadow episode "The Trail of the Knifer" from
February 20, 1949 and was puzzled by the opening signature line that
Bret Morrison botched. The organ music swelled upward as usual. Then, at
the same moment as always, the volume dropped so Morrison could speak
his opening lines, "Who knows that evil lurks in the heart of men?" But
there's no Morrison. No voice of The Shadow. The organ music continues
at low volume until finally after a delay Morrison speaks, "The Shadow
knows!" and then there's the famous laugh.

It seems pretty clear from your description that it was the sound engineer
who goofed up, not Bret Morrison. The engineer must have have been late in
throwing the switch to make the filter microhone "live." If Bret had been
delayed, he would have done the full opening later on in the music. In this
case, the announcer's mike was live, the organist's was on, but the
microphone that Bret used in the small booth for his performances as The
Shadow was not.

Subject: Science Fiction Theatre

Attempting to finish the SCIENCE FICTION THEATRE book by end of October,
which has been previewed on my web-site for the past six months (with over
200 cool behind-the-scenes photos), a TV series produced by radio pioneer
Fred Ziv, who produced such radio programs as FAVORITE STORY and I WAS A
COMMUNIST FOR THE FBI. I just came upon a stumbling block. It appears in one
letter between Ziv and producer Ivan Tors, that at one time they considered
doing a radio program based on the Office of Scientific Investigation (OSI)
which was a fictional government agency that looked into strange phenomena
and did what they could, scientifically, to save the day, and the world. (The
OSI also turned up in two episodes of the TV series.)

The motion picture THE MAGNETIC MONSTER (1954) features a premise about a
scientist who bombards a metal element with so many particles that it becomes
alive, devouring all forms of electricity and metal so it could double in
size every eleven hours. Needless to say, the metal monster continues to grow
and threatens to destroy the world. This same plot was intended to be reused
for a radio pilot (cast unknown) but I am not aware of such a pilot, or the
name of the series. Does anyone know of anything even remotely similar to
this? I have tons of unaired pilots, but appears to be one that I don't have
-- or one that wasn't produced but I'd like to hear it if it exists.
