Subject: Loyalty [removed]

I followed the link about Red Channels and looked for the loyalty oath --
and did not find one.
As a new teacher in 1955, I had to sign a loyalty oath. I was very
reluctant to do that, but since all it said was that I was not then and had
never been a member of the Communist party, and I did not advocate the
overthrow of the US government. I signed it but had pangs of conscience
about it. Why was my loyalty being questioned in the first place? I was
being hired as a high school teacher and, I suppose, the state government
was wary of hiring anyone who might be a Communist sympathizer.

Folks in the vicinity of Santa Rosa, California may be interested in a show
now running at a local playhouse titled "Ham for the Holidays". A brief
description is as follows:

"It's the winter of 1939 in tiny Hamlin, Ga., where a rare blizzard has
gripped the town for three days. At radio station WHAM, the cast and crew
anxiously await a visit from Orson Welles for a special holiday broadcast."

Very fascinating information! Wow, that sure was a different time! It sure
was more innocent and one respected one another then. Although, during WWII,
they said "Jap" all the time on shows (like Jack Benny and Fibber McGee and
Molly). But still, what a difference. It's a shame at what you hear now,
whether be on TV, out in the street, or in a store. [removed]
back then wouldn't say most of the things people say today in public or maybe
in their homes. It just wasn't polite.

First time posting here, and thanks for this wonderful mailing [removed]

I hope I'm not repeating an oft-asked question, but is there a comprehensive
listing out there of Christmas themed shows that still exist?

I've been compiling my own collection and list of what's on the OTR files
available on internet archive ([removed]) and figure that I'm probably
"re-inventing the wheel."

Another list I've been compiling is all the "vice" themed police dramas ...
narcotics / con games / [removed] again, thinking I'm reinventing the wheel, is
there any such list out there?

Thanks again!
Damon, OTR fan

Subject: the CBS backlist

CBS relied very much on Red Channels, a publication largely the
responsibility of a right-wing actor who was hooked in with several former
FBI agents who apparently brought some stolen FBI files with them when they
left the agency. As I discuss in Words at War (Scarecrow Press, 2002), CBS
hired a man named Daniel O'Shea as a vice president to enforce the blacklist.
if someone's name was found in the publication, he had to deal with the fact
that CBS presumed him person guilty until he can prove himself innocent.

There was the added twist that the presumption of guilt was not that a person
had committed a crime, but that he was a communist or shared some of the
ideas of Communists, particularly in that era, an opposition to racial
segregation

Subject: Phil Harris in the Merchant Marines

Ted asks:
Does anyone know if they all
went in together as an entertainment and morale unit? Did any of them,
including Phil, ever see active duty on the high seas?

My understanding was that it prevented the possibility of losing them one at
a time to the draft. I am not aware that any of them saw action; it was
all a fairly local Southern California posting.

Around this time, Jack was making pleas to the military to try and keep his
writer, Bill Morrow, from being taken into the service. I found a letter
where Jack specifically asks that Morrow be allowed to stay due to his
service in keeping up morale at home. As history has it, Morrow left for
the service at the end of the 1942-43 season, which also resulted in Ed
Beloin going into movies and the classic writing staff of "George, Sam, Milt
and Tack" being engaged for the Benny show.

Subject: re: CBS blacklist

From Michael Biel via Leah Biel's address:

Kermyt Anderson asked if the mimeographed list from Sig Mikelson's files
reproduced by Jeff Kisselhof contains just the names from Red Channels.
There are about 130 names on that page, but there are 151 names in the book.
As I do not have my copy of the book with me, I found a list of all of the
names in the book in a source I usually don't use, Wikipedia. I compared the
two, hoping that some goof-off has not changed the list in Wikipedia (one of
the many reasons NOT to use this dubious source). While many are on both I
can see a lot of people in the book not on the Mickelson list and vice-versa.
So they mimeo list is not the same as Red Channels.

A lot of the answers to the other questions Kermyt asks and the some of the
inside story of CBS and the blacklist can be found in the two books by and
about John Henry Faulk, the man whose lawsuit broke the blacklist. Read his
book "Fear on Trial" and his lawyer Louis Nizer's book "The Jury Returns".
Both are highly recommended and are very readable.
