Subject: A light is going out
When CBS announced this week that it was canceling the oldest broadcast
drama in history, Guiding Light, a website offered "the worst nightmare of
many fans has finally come true." Rumored to be leaving its spot in Matinee
Misery for years, it becomes reality Friday, Sept. 18, when the last of more
than 15,7o0 episodes airs.
The narrative, created by the original Drama Mama, Irna Phillips, debuted on
NBC Radio January 25, 1937, more than 72 years ago. Much more will be said
on this topic by the time it leaves the air.
I've had a lot of fun following the "career" of this enduring tale in a
plethora of books. Its radio incarnation is highlighted in The Great Radio
Soap Operas (McFarland) and Historical Dictionary of American Radio Soap
Operas (Scarecrow) and several more. Its video manifestation is spotlighted
in extensive detail in The Daytime Serials of Television, 1946-1960
([removed], 800-253-2187).
It is a sad occasion for millions who have been loyal to the show, even
though it has changed radically in an effort to remain contemporary. There
is nothing that can rival it among dramas in endurance; As the World Turns,
from April 2, 1956, is next in line in longevity.

Subject: Fred Foy related to Eddie Foy?
Hi Kenneth,
From one of the 'three' little Foys, no, my Dad is not related to Eddie Foy.
It is a common Irish name but our heritage traces back to German roots. The
famous vaudevillian Eddie Foy was a first generation American who migrated
directly from Ireland. Foy was originally a French name, spelled 'Foi'.
>From France some families migrated to Ireland and others to Germany.
Thanks for asking!

Peet Brothers was a soap company from Kansas that merged with the
Palm-Olive Company in the 1920's to become Palmolive-Peet. This company
then bought out the Colgate Company in 1928 and became the largest
soap/toothpaste company in the country. They entered stiff competition
from Proctor and Gamble when P&G began marketing Tide in the forties.
Sometime in the early fifties Colgate-Palmolive dropped the "Peet"

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a question and give a bit of a
plug to a blog that's done by a good friend.
He collects high school musicals - no, not the recent annoying Disney
thing, but operettas and musicals written for high schools, junior grades
and community theater from the turn of the century through the 40s. Back
in those days, groups put on original shows, not revamped scripts from
Broadway.

Anyway, we got into a little discussion about a composer of these things
that keeps popping up - Don Wilson.
Is this the same Don Wilson that was an announcer for Jack Benny? These
things are so obscure, I was wondering if he actually wrote them as a kind
of sideline to his other work in showbiz and they're just not mentioned in
his bios.
You can see the one's he's posted by Don Wilson by clicking on the tag on
the right side of the web page.

You can find a reasonable list on my web site in grid form. Some are AM, some
are FM and some are Internet only. I try to keep it maintained, but only
occasionally get wind of stations:

Larry Jordan mentions hearing a Bing Crosby program wherein Bing
messes up a song and makes jokes about it. I recently picked up an
old 78 record that is apparently a dub from an unreleased master
wherein Bing claims the orchestra made a mistake and he *sings* his
complaint, making up lyrics on the spot! There must have been quite a
few of these dubs made as the dealer I purchased it from had three
copies, and sold them all.

For the Mills entry in my "Crime Fiction IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography
1749-2000," I'm trying to trace his birth and death dates. He published
10 volumes of crime fiction in England 1938-1952, and reportedly may
have had an important post in radio there. Anyone catch a glimpse of him
in connection with British radio?

I'm sure others will mention this, but after 72 years, Guiding Light is
finally closing production. It was nice to hear Brian Williams on NBC
mention how it started on radio and especially since the series is on
CBS television.
