A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

I'm a proud member of the Historical Preservation Society in Marengo, IL.
We're currently working on our 2009 calendar, which we sell as a fundraiser
for our group.
This year, the theme of our calendar is a "Hall of Fame" one, featuring
folks from Marengo whose names are known beyond the limits of our small town
(pop. 5800).
One of our most famous sons was Egbert Van Alstyne, who wrote (among
hundreds of others) "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree." So, of course we
want to dedicate a page to him in our calendar.
I'm looking for information about his mother, Emma Van Alstyne. According to
local rumor, she hosted/appeared on a show for WLS called "Everybody's Hour"
back in the '20s (?) and may have also been on the National Barn Dance.
My question to the list is: does anyone have any memorabilia of any kind
featuring Mrs. Van Alstyne? If so, please contact me if you would be willing
to have it reproduced for our calendar. We can't offer monetary
compensation, but we will of course credit you as the source of the
material.
Thanks!

Bill Knowlton asked about Paul Harvey. The last I heard, Paul was back
doing The Rest of the Story. However, because of his recent bout with
pneumonia, his doctors don't want him to do the news broadcasts just
yet. And, yes, he sadly did lose his lovely Angel recently.

actor: The Doctor "Doctor Who"; Worzel; Gummidge "Worzel Gummidge"
Lest someone give Derek grief about this listing, Jon Pertwee has several
very solid British OTR/NTR connections.

Not only did he do two Dr Who radio plays (The Ghosts of N-Space and The
Paradise of Death), but he was one of the leads in the long-running Naval
radio comedy _The Navy Lark_. [removed]
It's been argued whether CPO Pertwee was inspired by Sgt Bilko (with Lt.
Comm. McHale following both) or whether they developed independently, but
HMS Troutbridge is only half the ship that PT-73 was -- largely because of

Subject: Halls of Ivy scripts
Do the scripts for "The Halls of Ivy" survive? I ask because I think in over
half of the episodes I've heard, there is no closing routine after the
credits--Ronnie and Benita simply come out and say goodnight. Not "We're a
little late folks so goodnight," but I presume that's what happened. In some
programs there is a brief bit at the end--a coda to the plot. I presume this
was written for every episode, and often cut out due to time overruns. It
would be fun to read the missing bit for every episode in which it wasn't
broadcast. Do the scripts survive, and if so, can they be accessed?
Thanks,
Kermyt

That one's been argued for years. But I do know that several radio
engineers with whom I have contact use rubbing alcohol on their professional
equipment.
One of them in fact snail-mailed me approximately THIRTY photocopied
pages from his tek manuals, all of them recommending rubbing alcohol.

What was the provenance of the PERIL series?
It doesn't seem to be the United States or Canadian and it doesn't sound
British, per se.
So possibly South African or Australian?
And the approximate decade?
Thanks for any information.

Subject: Mahlon who?
I realize there is controversy about the "true" inventor of radio,
but here's a candidate whom I was unfamiliar with until now.
In a 1967 book entitled "Mahlon Loomis: Inventor of Radio" author
Thomas Appleby claims that Loomis, a Washington, [removed] dentist and
inventor created radio, which he called "aerial telegraphy," in July
1864. This book was privately published by the Loomis family, which
may indicate a less than impartial review of broadcast history.

Subject: Indiana Jones
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Someone commented:
I saw the new "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" movie.
It had somestate-of-the-art over-the-top CGI special fx. But the writing was
so veryvery bad.
Indiana Jones is not for all tastes. While it does not rank as high as such
qualities
as SCHINDLER'S LIST, BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and CASINO ROYALE, it was
designed to be "entertaining," even if a field of flesh-eating ants and space
aliens
seem far out of left field.
For some background info: Lucas wrote a number of scripts for the INDIANA
JONES
character over the years. "Indiana Jones and the Lost Continent of Atlantis,"
"Indiana Jones and the Invaders from Outer Space," "Indiana Jones and the
Sword
of Excaliber" and at least one other (can't recall the title, but it was about
his
search for Noah's Ark).
All of them had their faults and probably contributed to the number of reasons
why we
did not have any other Indiana Jones films over the years. However, having
read all
the scripts listed above, I can state for certain that what they did was take
the best
parts of each script and combine them into one. In the Noah's Ark one, for
example,
he met up with his ex-love and the son he never knew he had. In the Atlantis
one,
they went up against a large chase sequence through a jungle. In the Outer
Space
one . . . well, you get the idea. Having watched the Crystal Skull movie, it
isn't
bad. Does it compare to I LOVE A MYSTERY with the same flavor? No. Only a
handful
of serials from I LOVE A MYSTERY had any sense of what Indiana Jones came to
be.
In "Stairway to the Sun," Jack and Doc are shooting flying reptiles from the
windows
of the airplane, and later battle monkey men. In "Battle of the Century," our
heroes
spend a week's worth of episodes hiding in a silo from the bad guys - and
that's
not very exciting. Each to their own taste, but if they decide to do another
Indiana
Jones film (doubt it, but you never know), I'd be curious to see if they try a
cross-over
approach and apply some of the best of I LOVE A MYSTERY for the next Dr. Jones
saga.

Hello again --
In reply to the question of "Whither Paul Harvey" (OTR Digest #169), I
happen to have a friend who lives just down the street from him in River
Forest Illinois, who wrote this to me today:
All I know about PH is that he looks very frail. We haven't seen him around
since the passing of his wife. Previously, we'd see him take a daily walk
around the [removed] himself( in his bright yellow jump suit!)....but in
recent months, he could barely walk and needed the help of another person to
move around. I wouldn't be surprised if the radio days are over.
Hope this helps! Pitiful that we will soon have to say goodbye to yet
another icon of OTR -- and an important one, with far reaching influence
over many, many years.

Subject: Re: Cleaning tape heads
George Wagner mentioned that his using toilet paper dipped in alcohol to
clean tape heads resulted in a joking remark from a fellow archivist using
toilet humor to react negatively to the quality of his tapes. There might
actually be something to it. I have found that soft paper starts dissolving
in the alcohol and might leave a coating of some paper processing chemicals
on the heads. And I am NOT joking about this. Depending on how the paper
was made, that film can be harder to clean off then regular tape gunk. And
if it is paper coated with aloe (for tender butts and noses) it will really
gunk up your pinch roller after you've "cleaned" the capstan. Are cotton
swabs really, really too expensive to use????
