As an additional note to Joe Salerno's comments about
Lone Ranger Day, I have a recording of the comments
Brace Beemer made to the audience at Midwest Farmer
Days in Yankton, South Dakota in 1943. If anyone wants
a copy, let me know. This is a very short "speech" but it
tells something about the honesty of the Ranger.

This Week's Classics & Curios Show:

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 133

CALL FOR MUSIC: CONTINUING WITH SHORE, MERCER, & JAMES

On radio during the 1940's and beyond, a cigarette company often put out
its signature sales "call for Phillip Morris," shouted by Johnny
Roventini, while America provided its musical preferences to a call for
music by the radio show of the same name. On "Call for Music," Dinah
Shore, Johnny Mercer, and Harry James revealed America's musical taste
with great songs and performances targeting the 18-25 demographic group.

This episode continues with two more of the "Call for Music" programs
with music that included, first, such numbers as "The Big Brass Band
from Brazil," "What'll I Do?" and a medley of blues with "The Saint
Louis Blues," "Early in the Mornin' Blues," and "Trumpet Blues." A
highlight on this first show is a medley of tunes from the musical
"Oklahoma," celebrating its fifth anniversary on broadway, so we hear
songs like "People Will Say We're in Love" and "The Surrey with the
Fringe on Top." The announcer is Jack Rourke on CBS, and the show found
success with Dinah Shore representing popular songs, Johnny Mercer
representing Tin Pan Alley and Broadway songwriting, and Harry James
representing Big Band music of the period.

On this "Classics & Curios" second "Call for Music" show Dinah is
honored as "Girl Singer of the Year" by "Radio Mirror Magazine." And
another Broadway show is featured, namely, "Annie Get Your Gun," which
produced hits like "Falling in Love is Wonderful," "Doin' What Comes
'Naturally," and "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better." More fine
performances come on "Spring Is Here," "But Beautiful," "I Got the Sun
in the Morning and the Moon at Night," "When Your Lover Has Gone," a
Mercer curio specialty of "When Veronica Plays the Harmonica," and a
James' jazzy "Cotton Tail."

Phillip Morris, of course, was one of the most prolific sponsors during
the Golden Age of radio, including sponsorship of "It Pays to Be
Ignorant," the show that "Call for Music" replaced. Other PM shows
included "Kate Smith Sings," "The Mel Torme Show," and "The Bickersons."
But according to "Billboard" of May 1, 1948, the cigarette company
caused a stir on "Call for Music" when its executives apparently tried
to run the show by telephone and ordered Dinah Shore's songs changed at
the last minute causing a shakeup of its production team which resulted
in Jerry Lawrence and Robert Lee leaving and being replaced by Robert
Smith and Bill Brennan, the production team for Jack Smith. Brennan and
Smith brought a more structured format and less "jive" type talk as the
show moved later to NBC. Eventually, Phillip Morris called for dropping
Harry James and Johnny Mercer and lowering the budget considerably,
signaling the imminent demise of the show. But while the show was at its
peak in 1948 it made listeners feel they indeed had "the sun in the
morning and the moon in the evening," and radio was truly "doing alright."

Hi.
I recently saw some of the 1948 BBC series 'The Adventures of PC49' in the
OTRR Group Library lists. Some of them would appear not to be in circulation
on this side of the pond. It would be interesting to know where those
recordings surfaced from ? Did they originate from BBC Transcription discs ?
Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA / UK )

I have a recording of a short comment by
Brace Beemer. This was recorded at the
Midwest Farmer Days celebration during
September 1943. He is telling his audience
that he could not bring Silver to the event
because of wartime restrictions. He wants
his audience, especially the children, to know
the reason. You may have a copy of this
short speech by Beemer. My address is below.

In the video sent by Joe Salerno in [removed], I agree on John Todd in the

Looks like Kenny Delmar as the main character.
