At that site click BBC Radio Player on Demand, then select BBC7.
A menu of programs will show, and the select the day you want to hear under

If you are in the mood for a ghost story. The Ghost Train a 85 minute drama
about a group of people stranded in a closed railway station encouter the
legendry "ghost train" that runs unscheduled on the tracks after midnight.
Needless to say there is murder involved also.

Happy Listening!

the various BBC channels really has little to to with Old-Time Radio. Yes,
they air audio drama routinely, but modern audio drama isn't the focus of

Subject: More on the Jim Harmon Books

The Great Radio Heroes was probably the first book _on_ OTR I bought, but
there book that was the seed crystal for me was Jim Harmon's Nostalgia
Catalog. When I saw the images of long-lost premiums, I learned that
there were places where I could obtain replacements for those long-lost
ones from my youth. That broke a barrier that had built up over the
decades, and rekindled my interest in the Captain Midnight saga (I
didn't get any other premiums until I had a complete set of
Code-O-Graphs). From that impetus, I found recordings of old shows, and
then went on to do serious research in the show. The rest is history.

None of this would have happened without Jim Harmon's two books.

Subject: Night Beat

Regarding the proper identification of the Frank Lovejoy program, it is
"Night Beat." He was a reporter with that assignment. It's often
erroneously listed as "Nightbeat," but that wouldn't make any sense because
it would mean that other reporters at the paper covered cityhallbeat,
policebeat, statehousebeat and federalcourthousebeat.

Once you think about it that way, it's pretty obvious.

Well, I haven't seen the actual scripts, but in terms of definition
either way is now accepted. However, the true sense of the series was
about the "rhythms of the night" thus the Night Beat (two words). I have
seen drumbeat as just that but usually as drum beat - same sense of
meaning though obviously here it is as the "rhythm of the drum."

Back in that period, my newspaperman father would always refer to it as
the night beat (two words).

But how did the producers spell it? Obviously, someone who has seen
original scripts might be able to answer it.

Many thanks to Andrew Schneider and all the others who have brought me up to
date about the KKK. The Southern Poverty Law Center website told me more
than I really wanted to know about the Klan. I have a friend who persists
in the belief that the Communist party is alive and well in the US and
continuing its activities as if this were the 1950s. No Klan klaverns in
South Dakota, but maybe he will want to re-direct his letters to the Klan
threat in neighboring Nebraska.

Let's see now, how do I relate this to OTR? ER Murrow was basically a radio
news and comment man, and his talents helped expose Senator McCarthy.
Murrow surely attacked both Communism and the Klan in his radio broadcasts.

Subject: RE: War Of The Worlds/Dr. Who

"Invaders from Mars", starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, is one
of my favorite episodes of Big Finish's authorized series of "Doctor
Who" audio dramas ([removed]). While
it's not one of their best productions, I love it for the way it weaves
itself into the history of the panic broadcast. I also like the
period-sounding musical score: so different from other episodes in the
audio series. I also agree that the Welles' impersonation is amazing.

There's also a terrific inside joke reflecting "Doctor Who"'s true
degree of separation from the WOTW broadcast: George Coulouris, who was
one of Welles' regular actors in the Mercury Theatre, went on to play a
character named Arbitan in the 1964 "Doctor Who" TV serial "The Keys of
Marinus". In the Big Finish "Invaders from Mars", as a rehearsal for the
broadcast is ending, one of the characters says "Coulouris, what *are*
you doing with those keys?".

If anyone is interested in checking out some of the fantastic stories
from the Big Finish "Doctor Who" releases, I heartily recommend "The
Holy Terror" by Rob Shearman, featuring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor,
and "The Fearmonger" by Jonathan Blum, starring Sylvester McCoy as the
Seventh Doctor.

I think I'll play my copy of "Invaders from Mars" while we're waiting
for Trick or Treaters. ;)

Hi Everybody,

I was reading a couple of digest ago comments of noticing the passing of the
OTR personalities from the past convention and what,s is going to be the
future. I am personally very excited to see the future fans of OTR
starting to come to the conventions around the USA. I am 39 years old and
I have attended 22 of the convention around USA over the years and many
time I was probably the youngest one there for many of them. My dad notice
at this FOTR convention that there was a large numbers of young people
attending the convention. Many of the well known fans of OTR that was born
after the 9-30-62 are showing up to the convention and helping out the
hobby. Over the last few years around the USA young fan such as Martin,
Ben, Derek, Laura, Elizabeth, Bryan, and Kim Bragg. The hobby is in very
good hands. It might be a lot smaller group but thanks to today
technology we have a chance to be very close and supported of this hobby.
Take care,

Subject: FBI file on Clark Kent: The truth revealed

All right, I'd better come clean. When I posted my message that I had the
FBI's file on Clark Kent and wished to pass it on to someone who could use

ship it "Air Express." Hint, hint!!!. But then I got a couple of requests

Out of curiostiy, I did a Yahoo search and lo and behold, over the decades a

boys "Clark." There are at least nine Clark Kents (Clarks Kent?) in Texas

Subject: "War of the Worlds","Nightbeat".

Hi! I'm Adam. I'm new to the group. If you happen to run across the "50th
Anniversary Dramatazion" of "War of the Worlds" that aired on NPR
10/30/88,avoid it if you haven't heard it. It's a very badly hatchet job to
the original
Koch script and has some very odd casting. They were trying to make it
"up-to-date" by having a woman "take charge",but a female "Orson Welles" is a
very
strange casting, when you've heard mostly male voices doing those parts.
Especially if you have listened to the original show many times.

Also,I am a huge fan of the Nightbeat series with Frank
Lovejoy. As far as I know, "Nightbeat" and "Night Beat" are the same
show,ala,"Gangbusters"/"Gang Busters". If anyone can locate episodes of
the 1950s TV
series Four Star Playhouse (syndicated as Star Performance) Frank plays Randy
Stone in at least one [removed] you're a Nightbeat fan,you won't be
disappointed. Anyone know if efforts were ever made to make Nightbeat a
regular TV
series? Just a quick aside:Johnny Dollar never
made it to TV because the producers told Bob Bailey he "wasn't the type they

Subject: Seeking help identifying Captain Midnight
 episode

During a recent visit to a used bookstore, I purchased
eight "Captain Midnight" cassettes that had been put
out by Radio Spirits. Each tape contains four
15-minute episodes, and 6 of the tapes contain
consecutive episodes from the Skelly sponsorship years
of 1939 and 1940 (Dec. 18, 1939- Jan. 31, 1940, to be
exact. The seventh tape jumps ahead to March 1940, but
again presents the shows in order.

For the record, these tapes are labeled by Radio
Spirits as 1291-1296, and 633.

However, the eighth tape is a bit different. Labeled
#98, it contains three unconnected Olvatine-sponsored
adventures, followed by one Skelly adventure.

What I'm seeking to find out is when this particular
Skelly-sponsored episode originally aired. According
to Dunning and other sources, there were only two
storylines during the Skelly years: the 59 chapter
"Perada Treasure", and the 33 chapter "Mysterious
Voice", for a total of 92 chapters in all. What I have
encompasses chapters 45-59 of "Perada Treasure",
inclusive, and chapters 1-9 inclusive and 22-25
inclusive of "Mysterious Voice."

Towards the end of the "Perada Treasure" storyline (on
Jan. 1, 1940, to be precise), the series went from a
Monday-Friday airing to a [removed] airing. The
introduction to the Skelly episode on tape #98
mentions the show is aired five times per week, so we
conclude it aired in 1939.

But several things puzzle me. First, there is no
mention of the Perada treasure, nor any of the
characters (other than the regulars and Ivan Shark)
involved in that adventure.

Second, Captain Midnight is referred to as "Red
Roberts", rather than Red Albright.

Third, one of the characters who appears in this
episode is Ichabod Mudd. I thought he was added during
the Olvatine years. There was absolutely no mention of
him in any of the "Perada Treasure" or "Mysterious
Voice" episodes on the other tapes.

In the story in question, Captain Midnight transfers
from one plane to another in mid air because the pilot
of the other plane, Steve Donovan, has been injured.
Upon getting the plane on the ground, he is addressed
as Red Roberts. Chuck Ramsey, who had been in the
plane Captain Midnight vacated, lands that one.

Later, Ivan Shark, hearing of this daring mid-air
transfer from one plane to another, concludes that
"Red Roberts" must be Captain Midnight. The episode
ends about there, with announcer Don Gordon suggesting
a confrontation between Captain Midnight and Ivan
Shark is not only inevitable, but imminent.

So, can anyone tell me if A) there was a
Skelly-sponsored storyline that aired _before_ "The
Perada Treasure"?; B) When this episode aired; C) How
long the "Red Roberts" identity of Captain Midnight
was used, and which is "official", "Roberts" or
"Albright"?; and D) if "Roberts" was the name to start
with, when and why did it become "Albright"? For that
matter, if it was "Albright" to start with, where did
"Roberts" come from?

And if anyone can tell me the dates of the three
Olvatine sponsored episodes on that tape- or point me
to a website that gives a detailed listing of Olvatine
episodes, that'd be nice, too.

Thanks,

Rick

I believe NBC still uses the title occasionally for religious television
