Years and years ago, Stephen Youngkin came to PPB to research Peter Lorre's
"life" in radio.
I was glad to supply whatever info on Lorre we had, and radio shows Lorre had
done.
At that time, he was writing "THE FILMS OF PETER LORRE."
Stephen spent months at PPB doing research.
What was wonderful was to sit with Stephen and listen to him talk about
Lorre's life.
Fascinating tales of a talented genius who was not only a superb actor, but
also a film director.
Look up his film "Der Verloren" or The Lost One. He directed AND acted in it.
I believe it is available on DVD.

When I was a film student at UCLA, Arthur Ripley (writer/director) was
teaching a class.
He would bring in various famous guests he knew to talk to us. One of them was
Peter Lorre.
The impression Lorre made on me was that he was a brilliant and subtle wit,
who knew perfectly well how to tell a story.
His intelligence and how he expressed himself was in no way condescending or
preachy.
He really knew what he was about.
And he made us constantly laugh at his humor.

I have found that, although much has been written about Lorre, the best has
been from Stephen Youngkin.
Do look up Stephens books and you will be delighted by them.

anyone tell me the date, name, how many parts were made and a possible

Many thanks

Subject: The Orson Welles Show

Hi gang!

I have a few episodes of what is called "The Orson Welles
Show". The eps I have are from '41.

They are 30 minutes in length and include skits, mini-plays,
poetry, and various famous guests of the the day.

I'm wondering how many
of these shows are extant, and if there is a place to get them
on the web for free.

many thanks, and happy holidays!

Subject: Radio station management 101

Even though I never trained for the post, I think I've become a radio
station manager in absentia. Recently on this forum I deplored the
deteriorating circumstances in which our little burg finds itself in dealing
with Clear Channel Communications. CCC dominates the Louisville market by
owning 6 or 8 radio stations, a condition prevalent in scores of
municipalities around the country. I noted that CCC places most of its eggs
here in the WHAS basket, the traditional 50,000-watt leader of the pack, and
gives the remainder of its local empire short shift.

One of those also-rans, WKJK, is the CBS affiliate.  Sometimes we get CBS;
sometimes we don't. I assume when you can pick up the WHAS signal on WKJK,
Clear Channel is either duplicating its leading station because (a) it's
more profitable to do so or (b) somebody fell asleep at the switch.

After four or five consecutive days of hearing WHAS broadcast on WKJK,
including the WHAS local news at the top and bottom of each hour, plus some
WHAS local programs, I finally called in to the switchboard today to ask
what had happened to CBS. The receptionist answered the phone "Clear
Channel" which told me she was serving every station they owned locally.
She answered my question ("What has happened to CBS?") with: "What
station?" I told her WKJK. She advised that she would find out and put me
on hold.

To my surprise she was back in a moment: "The person who's in charge of
WKJK said CBS News is heard at the top of every hour." I explained that
this was impossible since WKJK had been broadcasting WHAS news at the top of
every hour for days. She replied that she would "pass the word along."

At the top of the next hour, CBS was restored and has been airing at all
subsequent hours since. I related this incident to my wife. "Why am I the
only person in a city of a million who told them they needed to throw the
switch?" I asked. My spouse serenely answered, "Because, dear, you're the
only one listening."

Touche.
