Steve Salaba said, "To add to a recent post, Jack Benny once said that Ed
had a sports show of some kind when Jack appeared on it. I don't know how
accurate Jack's memory was at the time. There may be more to it, at any
rate."
I checked several Sullivan biographies, and Ed Sullivan did not have a
sports radio show. Sullivan was a newspaper sports reporter in the 1920's,
but his 1932 radio show was entertainment oriented. Of course, this led to
the famous feud with Walter Winchell on how to present entertainment gossip.
Sullivan never achieved Winchell's success in radio reporting.

Subject: Re: J. Scott Smart
Hello again --
Joe Mackey's mention of J. Scott Smart in his "This Week in Radio History
19-25" reminded me that I have intended for some time to mention that Mr.
Smart had a comedy role in Deanna Durbin's second movie "One Hundred Men and
a Girl," playing the gatekeeper in the concert hall where Leopold Stokowski
was rehearsing his orchestra. Quite a change of pace for the detective whose
voice sounded so ominous and no-nonsense on the radio.
Incidentally, Ms. Durbin, who died in France last April at 91, was the
highest paid "working" woman in the world in the early forties and an
enormously popular singing actress during the ten years that she filmed her
21 movies and a few short "buy war bonds" PSAs before retiring forever at
age 28. It's unfortunate that she only made a few radio appearances, getting
her start on the Eddie Cantor show in the late thirties for a couple of
years (most of those programs are lost), then starring in "Mad About
Music"on the Lux Radio Theater.

Episode 106
Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers: Rosemary Wants to Be a Side Man
Time once again to visit "Eddie Hubbard and the Browsers" in Trivia
Tower. We'll hear some great performances in this show from April 17,
1999. And timely trivia questions will cause a little memory testing or
perhaps rapid computer googling along the way. My favorite recording on
this program showcases Rosemary Clooney singing "I Want to Be a Side
Man" with the Count Basie Orchestra. This is a pretty rare piece, and
Rosie is so cool and complements the Count's swinging arrangement perfectly.
Among other top performances are Bing Crosby's "Be Careful, It's My
Heart," Glenn Miller's "American Patrol," the Mills Brothers' "Cab
Driver," Al Jolson's "Anniversary Song," Tiny Hill's "Ain't She Sweet,"
and "Besame Mucho" by Bob Eberly and Kitty Kallen with Jimmy Dorsey's
orchestra.
Testing our trivia knowledge are questions concerning the origin of "The
Anniversary Song," the bands that Rosemary Clooney sang with, songs with
vehicles mentioned in the titles, and the name of the movie in which
Bing sang "Be Careful, It's My Heart." And an old question asks, "What
was the name of the song on the "B" side of that recording by Bing?"
Phil's "Phooler" focuses on a duet performance of the song "I Don't Know
Why I Love You Like I Do." Bing is easy to identify, of course, but the
Browsers have a tough time with the female vocalist. Perhaps you should
skip the next paragraph for the moment while I mention a slight
controversy about the girl singer and in so doing give away the answer.
Phil's "Phooler" brings up an interesting issue. In a scene in the 1944
film "To Have And Have Not" nineteen year old Lauren Bacall sings "How
Little We Know" with Hoagy Carmichael. Andy Williams in his book Moon
River and Me: A Memoir notes that he dubbed the singing for her when he
was 16 years old, although he says he won't argue about it with the
"formidable Ms. Bacall." She and director Howard Hawks both affirmed
that she actually did end up doing her own singing. Certainly her fine
radio duet with Bing in Phil's "Phooler" tends to substantiate Hawks'
and her claim that she could at least hold her own, especially in view
of the Browsers' suggesting that the mystery singer perhaps was Judy
Garland.
Among the recordings added by Eddie in place of commercials are "Once
Upon a Time" by John Gary, "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" by Doris
Day, and a wonderful swing version of "Rose Room" by the Benny Goodman
Sextette featuring solos by the great Charlie Christian on guitar and
Lionel Hampton on vibraphone.
So let our fun musical "history lesson" begin with "Professor" Hubbard
and his professorial pals the Browsers, and let's give thanks to God for
the amazing blessings of music and laughter.
