I have an episode of Duffy's Tavern "Old School Teacher Visits" that makes a
joke about "Will the Ubangis be helped or hurt by the bottleneck" and later a
joke of "Mrs. [removed] , housewife and part time picket." The audience finds these
jokes funny, so it must reference something topical, but what?

Pardon, but I don't believe this could have been 1965. The National
Conventions of the major political parties are held in presidential election
years, and those ALWAYS end in EVEN numbers.
Sincerely,

A listener to Heritage Theatre asked me if I knew anything about
recordings of
the DICK CAVETT show during the
period of the Democratic National Convention in 1965 that featured some
hilarious bits with BOB & RAY, with
a montage of Pres. Johnson behind them. Anyone know of these? <<Tom>>
There was no Democratic National Convention in 1965, and Dick Cavett's talk
show didn't exist until 1968. Perhaps it was during the mess in Chicago in
'68 that also saw Bill Buckley and Gore Vidal cuss at each other over the
ABC-TV Network while Howard K. Smith tried in vain to referee?

Subject: Norman Corwin reading
I teach a class in OTR and American society and I'm
looking for an article that critically assesses
Corwin's radio work. I've done some poking around, but
have thus far been unsuccessful. Mostly I find
appreciations and adoring fan stuff (and I AM a fan,
by the way). What I've been using is part of a chapter
in The Great Audience by Gilbert Seldes. Not bad, but
not quite what I'm looking for.
My class listens to either We Hold These Truths or On
a Note of Triumph and also watches the recent
Oscar-winning documentary. Of course, we have class
discussion, too, but I really would like them to read
a reasonably rigorous, academic study on him.
If someone has any ideas, I'd love to hear from you.
Please contact me off-list, if you like. Or perhaps
others would be interested in your suggestions.
Alan

I have 2 different versions of the February 20, 1952 Red Skelton show. One is
sponsored by Norge and one is sponsored by Blue Star Razor Blades. Were these
regional sponsors?
It would help to date your episodes if we knew the name or subject of
the episode. I have checked several logs and they don't agree on days
of the week. Norge was the sponsor, on CBS. in February . one log show
an episode on Doctors & Hospital Part 2 on Tuesday 2/20/52 and another
says Wednesday 2/21/52 ????
Red Changed to NBC on Tuesdays with Multi sponsors in my collection I
have several Episodes as being sponsored by Star Razor Blades. The
Change of network and to Tuesdays was 9/16/52 .Now I'm confused and
probably didn't you, but I tried.

Tom:
Bob and Ray were actually on Cavett with those [removed]
during the 1968 presidential elections.
The appearences were on Cavett's morning show (1968-1970) on ABC.
I can't recall the content but I clearly remember the setting. The
premise was that they were doing low-budget reporting for the Cavett
show and the set was a sub-basement (or some storage room) at the
convention hall, with concrete walls, pipes and one of those small
basement half-windows above them.
The funniest piece of business (for me anyway) was that because they
were so low budget, they only had one monitor - a small, tiny black and
white TV in the background that was broken - the horizontal hold kept
rolling the TV the entire time. Of course that is one of the wonderful
things about Bob and Ray, the little nuances they worked into their bits.
That's all I remember besides laughing hysterically everytime they I saw
that little TV rolling to no end.
You might want to contact Larry Josephson, long time Bob and Ray
producer/historian/archivist who collected and rescued their radio
recordings from over four decades - he may have more information. You
can get his email and phone from the contact page of the Bob and Ray
website (just go to Google and type Bob and Ray - it's the first listing).

Being a school teacher, I am very concerned with the problem of drug use
by today's students. I am extremely disappointed by the decision to cast
Seth Rogen as Britt Reid. We all know that if George W. Trendle was
alive, he would strongly disapprove of this casting choice.
Actually, my understanding is that a significant number of Trendle's WXYZ
actors and stars had drug problems. The drug was alcohol, which is also
probably abused by some of your students. And an even larger percentage of
Trendle's performers if we include nicotine addiction.
Last I heard, alcohol and nicotine (identified by former [removed] Surgeon
General C. Everett Koop as being more addictive than heroin) were still the
most abused drugs in this country, especially by students.

I can also verify that the original broadcast had that all important "flub"
at the climax of the show. I dubbed the CBS network discs for preservation
some years back and, sure enough, that flub WAS there. What a way to "kill"
a fantastic half hour of Suspense.
I'm [removed] was the flub? I have an "encore presentation" of the show on tape (the Suspense host introduced it by saying something like "we will present one of our most talked-about productions"). So the version I have might have the flub excised. But still, what was it?
