In issue #84 of the digest, Martin Grams asked who was putting on the OTR
presentations at the WWII Weekend at the Reading Airport, and what the
show would be. Well ... as I remember, these are put on by radio station
WEEU, 34 North Fourth Street, Reading, PA 19601. As far as the programs
go, they are numerous and are running most of the day, along with WWII
newscasts.

Martin is welcome to contact me off-line, if he wants, at

Subject: Free Food at the Hotel

A couple weeks ago I had a sit-down with the hotel in Aberdeen, Maryland and
they were kind enough to offer a special for the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia
Convention.

Anyone who plans to book their room at the Clarion Hotel where the convention
is held, receives a $25 free food voucher PER DAY for EVERY night they stay
at the hotel. Considering all guests of the hotel receive complimentary
buffet breakfast, this pretty much means most if not all of your meals will
be covered. Obviously, the food voucher is not good for the buffet dinner
banquet on Saturday night.

Anyone who has not booked their room at the Clarion Hotel for MANC yet may
want to consider doing so now. There is no expiration date for this offer and
they can withdraw it at anytime so do not delay. If you plan to stay the
whole weekend (three nights means $75 for the weekend)!

The dates of The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention are August 27, 28 and 29,
2009. The Clarion Hotel, Aberdeen, Maryland. [removed]

Be sure to mention you are attending the Nostalgia Convention so you can get
the convention discount price.

Old-Time Radio Recreations, OTR vendors, and OTR movies are among the
highlights. The Drive-In Movie Theater on Friday night is on schedule with a
Thursday evening raindate since the dinner banquet is Saturday night.
Guests include: Bob Hastings (Archie Andrews, The Shadow, X-Minus One, TV's
McHale's Navy), Lee Meriwether (Batman, Time Tunnel, Barnaby Jones, Miss
America of 1955), Celeste Holm (she needs no introduction to her screen,
stage, TV and radio work), James Best (Forbidden Planet, Gunsmoke, Dukes of
Hazzard), Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair, Tom Sawyer), Diana Sowle (Willy
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), Patty McCormack (The Bad Seed, Cavalcade of
America, Tom Corbett, I Remember Mama, The Sopranos -- and she'll recreate
her 1956 role in the SUSPENSE episode "The Doll") are among the guests
confirmed to date.

A friend from Columbia SC tells me that WIS has changed its call call letters,
forced to do so because the FCC won't let new owners of a radio station keep
its old three letter calls. Anybody know if this is true?

Subject: new I Love A Mystery

GOOD NEWS!

I Love A Mystery is making a comeback! It's official now. Tim Knofler and a
number of talented performers will be recreating all of the I LOVE A MYSTERY
radio serials, to be released commercially on CD. Authorized through the
Carlton E. Morse estate, each serial will be complete, uncut and unedited.
The original Hollywood run of scripts will be used to recreate every word,
every sound effect and music cue.

Tim acknowledged (to my delight) that they will not be censored which means
when you hear "The Widow with the Amputation" and Jack and Doc are stranded
on the island defending the old lady by knifing enemy soldiers (yep, World
War II propaganda), there will be no censorship regarding the slang that was
prominent in the serial.

The official web-site will be [removed] and while it's not up
yet, you can bookmark it for a return visit. One site you can check out in
the meantime is [removed]

Under contract, the very first serial commercially soon-to-be released will
be a "make it or break it" proposition. If the first release sells beyond
expectations, they will be granted permission to reproduce ALL of them. And
this is the only stipulation so when it becomes available, buy one for your
friend and for yourself. Soon as I get more information including who is
going to play the cast I'll pass it on.

Subject: Shoot to kill!

Somewhere in the back of my wee little brain I thought that most of the
children's cowboy heroes such as the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry,
Hopalong Cassidy and maybe others, had a policy of never shooting to kill,
just slightly injure. Anyone know where I got that idea from?

I mention it because I have been listening to several Hopalong Cassidy
episodes of late and there are several where Hoppy has clearly "done in" a
bad guy.

Also, in listening to these Hoppy shows, I am beginning to think that maybe
later in the run of the series he changed from being a kids show to a more
adult themed program. Or is that perception wrong, too?

Subject: Guest Star fake out

I was listening to a 1947 Arthur Godfrey Show. He was apparently giving out
some Esquire "oscar" awards to some celebrities. One of the recipients was
Billie Holiday. With previous guests, Arthur had greeted them and they said a
few words back. When it was Billie's turn, he introduced her, talked 'at' her
a bit, then had her sing.

After the song, he thanked her. She never said a word. During her song, it
seemed I heard an increase in record hiss and felt that she hadn't really
been there, but they'd faked her 'appearance', and just popped on a recording
of her song.

Anyone know if this kind of faked appearance was a common practice, or, am I
imaging things?

Subject: Re: Hindenburg Disaster

Larry Groebe asked:

The calendar entry regarding the anniversary of Herb Morrison's
broadcast of the Hindenburg landing reminds of a question I've been
wanting to pose about the >broadcast: how much of it was scripted? Not
the crash - of course not that. But his talk up until that point -- was
Morrison a fabulous ad-libber, or did he have a >script either in whole
or in part?

As Larry's question inferred, doing an on-the-spot report might
combine scripted and ad-lib material. In the case of Herb Morrison and
the Hindenburg report I once asked my friend Herb if he was using a
script and he said he wasn't.
Herb Morrison was a licensed pilot who had worked for an aircraft
manufacturer before going into radio. He could speak easily about
aviation matters. Prior to going to Lakehurst he thoroughly researched
the subject of dirigibles and lighter-than-air transportation, including
safety factors, which he did mention prior to the explosion. I don't
believe he kept any notes or other source material.
Viewing the explosion and fire could leave some people speechless,
but Herb told me that he did bear in mind one of the rules of radio: no
matter what happens, keep talking.

Subject: SPERDVAC Pictures Update

I sent a URL for my SPERDVAC photos to the list yesterday and it was in this
morning's digest (or last night's, not sure).

In any case, I also just found out that Kodak is requiring its users to
actually buy something in exchange for hosting photos online and that I'm
going to be kicked off the system on May 11. This is of course perfectly
fair and I'm not complaining but I also don't need prints of any of those
photos right now so I'll probably go back to storing my photos locally.

So this is just a warning to anyone who was hoping to purchase any of those
shots for their personal use -- hurry.

You may resume your normal OTR conversations,
