One announcer on the show was Bill Kennedy; I believe there
was another, as well?
(Paging Tony?)
The other would be Charlie Lyon, who was hired by Kellogg's (or their agency
Leo Burnett) to do the intro ("Kellogg's, the Greatest Name in Cereals,
presents the 'Adventures of Superman'") and the part of the close that
mentioned Kellogg's. For the final season, which had two sponsors, Lyon did
the entire close and, instead of mentioning the cereal company, added
"Superman is based on the original character appearing in 'Superman'
magazine." That close, which originally was used only on the last 13
episodes, was later over-dubbed onto the previous 39 when they were released
in full color in 1965.

Subject: Arnold Stang as "Jake the Weasel" Bonanza
I mostly experienced Arnold Stang as a dopy looking character on Uncle
Miltie's program
His role on Bonanza was quite different and fun to watch.
Thank you to Nick at Nite.

Some Cowboy out there must know of a log for Gene.

I ran across your blog as I was searching for any information on
Lannie Ross.
Lanny (with a "y") Ross was a very popular entertainer in 40s radio and
early TV. He was also my mother's favorite entertainer back then. I
remember playing 78's of his recording, on the Liberty label, I believe, of
"A Song By The Fire."
Anyway, there is a biographical website at
[removed], but not much else, that I could
find.

Subject: Announcers From Radio to TV
Biill posed the question
What prominent radio announceers made the transition to TV?
after watching the original TV series of Superman.
I was watching an epsiode of "Leave It to Beaver" from 1960 recently (from
the fourth season) and saw Larry Thor in a minor acting role. Of course,
Thor had been the announcer on my favourite radio series "Rocky Jordan" as
well as playing the lead in "Broadway Is My Beat".

The documentary on the Man of Steel aired on A & E a few evenings ago, and
is due out on DVD soon. They briefly discussed the radio version of
Superman, as well as all the other manifestations, and some of the
innovations for the character that were products of the radio series. I
enjoyed it very much and recommend it for all Superman [removed] thought they
did a thorough job.
The DVD has about a half hour of footage not seen on the broadcast, I am
told.

Subject: Stan Freber: Portugal joke
I've been listening lately to Bob & Ray's excellent 15 minute 1959/60
CBS show. A sketch they did about the novel "Two Cents Plain" by Harry
Golden cleared up a joke I'd never gotten from Stan Freberg's classic
LP, "Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America. Volume 1: The
Early Years," which I have loved since I was about 8 years old. The
joke involves Queen Isabella, extolling the virtues of the New World,
when she uses the phrase "with purple mountain majesties above the two
cents plain". King Ferdinand (played by Jesse White) and Columbus
(played by Freberg) immediately correct her with "fruited." I had never
known what the phrase "two cents plain" meant. It took me nearly 30
years to get the joke!
When I got back into the OTR hobby, about 7 years ago, I found a lot of
jokes from this LP were cleared up. Couldn't even begin to name them
here, but I'm sure those of you who are familiar with the album know
what I'm talking about. (The only one that comes to mind now is "This
way Mr First Nighter!", used when selling Manhatten to the Indians.)
However, there's at least one joke left that I still don't get. King
Ferdinand asks Columbus, "Why should Spain sponsor you? Why don't you
go to Portugal?" and Columbus replies, "I did. They bought 'The Price
is Right.'" I've never understood what that meant. Can anybody
elucidate?
Thanks!
Kermyt
