Subject: amos 'n' andy tapes/videos
So, I haven't been paying attention. This subject has been done to death,
but now I really need to know:
Where is the best deal on high-quality Amos 'n' Andy radio shows and videos
(such that they are) of the TV series, perchance including Check and Double
Check plus the two '30's cartoons? A pointer toward a good set of Calvin
and the Colonel would also be appreciated.
The reason that I need to know is that I've been working with a fellow who
knows not the OTR newsgroup. We were talking over lunch the other day, and
he was regretting that Amos 'n' Andy wasn't available on tape or video.
With that I leaped into action, burying poor Ralph in all the stuff I'd
learned from Elizabeth and others here.
So now that I've established myself as the big macher of Amos 'n' Andy, I'd
better deliver on my boasts. I've sent Ralph a copy of the last Digest and
suggested that he join, but he may or may not do so. I've looked at one or
two sources of tapes, etc., but it would be nice to get well-processed,
early-generation recordings if any exist.
I'm not sure that he believes the story of Calvin and the Colonel--that is,
that it was a modern version of A 'n' A--so that may have to wait for a
while.
M Kinsler
"big macher" is colloquial English/Yiddish for a boastful, self-declared
expert. I'm not sure of the proper transliteration, but the mach part of
the word rhymes with Bach. Or Mach.

I did happen to hear a 1940s-era broadcast of "This is Your F-B-I" the
other day on Y-USA, and it closed out with "This is the Blue Network of
the American Broadcasting Company". There didn't seem to be any chimes
playing afterwards, although I one time heard an old broadcast of some
program that simply outcue'd as "This is the Blue Network" followed by
the g-e-c chimes.
[...]
With RCA/NBC's divesting of the NBC-Blue Network to Edward J. Noble, and
to be renamed ABC, you'd think that if they still referred to themselves
as "Blue", the outcue should have been "This is the Blue Network, the
American Broadcasting Company", without the inserting of the preposition
'of'.
Here's a little bit of trivia for you as well. RCA/NBC sold Blue to
Edward Noble in 1943, but it was spun off before that - in 1940 or 41,
I believe - into a separate holding company called The Blue Network
Company, Inc., that had no official connection or affiliation with
NBC, although they were apparently still using the NBC Chimes as a
system cue.
The Library of Congress has all of NBC's historical material that they
cared to save and donate; one file is devoted to the chimes. In that
folder is a letter dated January 29, 1942, from Frank E Mullen to Roy
C. Witmer. Mullen references a proposal from the Louisville, KY
affiliate WAVE to cahnge the NBC Chimes to make them sound like Morse
Code for the letter "V", dismisses the idea as "plain silly", then
adds: "Incidentally, how much are we charging the Blue Network Co for
the use of NBC chimes? It seems as though we ought to get a little
revenue out of a thing of this kind."
By the way, the Red and Blue network names came from the color ink
used by AT&T to distinguish the lines carrying the programming of
those networks. Other networks apparently were referenced by other
colors; our own Mike Biel revealed a few weeks ago on Walden Hughes'
program that AT&T used the color Purple for CBS.
"This is the Purple Network of the Columbia Broadcasting System."
Nah. :-)

At least one instance of this still exists on ABC TV with the show "NYPD Blue"

Subject: Help with Recordio discs?
A coworker of mine brought in a stack of 8 or 10 Recordio discs today.
His father often played at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, and these are
recordings from the early 1940's of some of his father's performances.
He has no way to play them, and he brought them to me in hopes that one
of my OTR friends could help.
I need to find a Digest member who has the equipment necessary to play
these records into a CD burner (or cassette recorder as second choice).
Any volunteers? I'll send you the discs and a blank CD-R (or CD-music
recordable) and return postage. Please let me know if you can help my
friend hear his father's music!
Thanks,
Dan, danhughes@[removed]
