Some of the OTR shows such as "Perry Mason" were serials (right?),
yet centered mostly around the investigation and gathering of
information/evidence, but rarely showed the attorneys in the
courtroom explaining and/or defending what they'd uncovered. Why?

Interesting question. I've never read the original Earl Stanley
Gardner novels, so I don't know to what extent courtroom appearances
were a feature in the novels, though I'm under the impression that
they were. But yes, the Perry Mason radio show was a daily 15-minute
serial. And perhaps that was the reason. I suspect the
investigation better lent itself to a serialized story. And to an
audience that may not be familiar with the way a courtroom operated,
I would think it would be harder to depict a courtroom on radio.

I heard Perry Mason once or twice as a child and didn't really follow
it well. As an adult, I've heard one episode, and it seemed to me
that Perry Mason was more of a private detective and police ally on
the radio, rather than a defense attorney.

In the episode that I heard, they were busting up a "hay" racket. I
guess the grass wasn't as fresh in those days.

I recently purchased ... "Superman Last Son of
Krypton" from Radio Spirits. This set includes the multi-part storyline "The
Mystery of the Stolen Costume" (later re-tooled as an episode of the George
Reeves TV series)

Rick, it was also retooled as a RADIO one-parter, for Collyer's half-hour
swansong season. And, because of its ending, its considered one of the
darker,
more serious Classic Supes stories.

Best,
-Craig W.
