Subject: Mickey Rooney/Ron Howard
Particularly in light of the fact that Micky's identification with such
early 'Hardy" films, instead of his body of work in some heavy dramatic
roles as an adult, ("Bill" on TV was a classic) would bug a lot of
performers.
Many years ago I was in line at the Fox Village Theater in Westwood, CA on a Sunday morning to see
the latest Star Trek movie when Ron Howard, his wife and kids joined the line right behind me.
He had recently directed the hit movies "Backdraft" and "Apollo 13" and I was well aware of the
"Opie Cunningham" jokes that Eddie Murphy had cracked when Ron was a guest host on Saturday Night
Live. So in the same vein I said,
"Omigod! You're Ron Howard aren't you?"
"Yes, I am" he said politely.
"Well, I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed your singing in "The Music Man!"
"Thank you very much," he said very seriously as he shook my hand. But his wife and kids just
busted out laughing!
(In case you've never seen the movie, in a role that predates Opie, little Ronnie Howard sings
"Gary, Indiana" with a lisp.)

I must becoming my companies Old Time Radio expert. - A title which I am
not worthy of, especially compared to this esteemed group.
So now that I have buttered you up.
Does anyone have any information on
1. A Stoopnagle and Budd sketch about Christmas where the poem comes out "
Twas the Kris before Nighmas when ..."
and
2. An Abbot and Costello sketch about the Susquehanna Hat Factory?
Any leads would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: Rooney Redux
Sheesh! All I did was convey a story that happened to me
regarding a name that someone else brought up on this list. Now I (or
my wife) seem to be the villian in the affair.
We live in the Los Angeles area and see celebrities quite often,
or at least my wife recognizes them, I seldom do. Normally she whispers
to me don't turn around now, or don't look now but so and so is right
behind you! She is not one to run up to celebrities with an autograph
book in hand or with other demands. Never would either of us approach a
celebrity on the street or in a restaurant as we have always respected
the privacy of these people.
This was however a public affair(although by invitation only)
and there were many celebrities there (see, I didn't drop any of their
names!) who were there to mix with the invitees, the idea I am sure was
to get the non celebrities to part with some green for a very worthy cause.
This is why Rooney was there! To be recognized and to be
gushed over and to chat with the other guests. So I resent the
implication that we somehow invaded his privacy. Actually his later
rudeness actually invade my privacy by interupting my private
conversation with Pat Boone!
What I didn't say before, was that rather than contributing
to the worthy cause in some way, Rooney left as soon as dinner was over
and before the speeches began. I also didn't pass on other
stories(rumors I'd heard) about what a jerk he was, because I considered
those to just that, Rumors!
I wasn't passing judgement on the man, I was simply telling
a story I thought others might find interesting, and I didn't think it
required anybody to spring to his defense with theories of what might
have been going through his mind, or how he may have blown all his money
on multiple wives and so we should feel sorry for him, and forgive his
boorishness.
Actually I was expecting someone to pass on another
personal story about a good encounter with the man, and that would have
been fine, but no one did. Rooney is a really good actor and I'll watch
him in movies any chance I get, but that doesn't change what happened
that night anymore than what happened that night means that he is a
terrible man.
So ease up out there, I wasn't attacking Rooney, and I
wasn't attacking any of you on the list either. I guess this means that
I can't tell the story of who we were sitting with on the Disneyland
Jungle Ride, or who was sitting in front of us at Dodger Stadium the
other day! :)
Well I still love you all. (Well most of you anyway)!:)

I can provide an older version of Winamp that should work on the older
computer and will send it direct to Tim. Winamp has the advantage that it
includes a graphic equalizer which is useful for adjusting the tone of the
old programs and the prescaler.
There are many small players and one of my favorites is one that does not
install stuff all over the place on the computer. You can get it from the
provider's website and it's free. It supports playlists but otherwise has
very few features.

This program has the advantage that it can be installed on every MP3 CD you
burn and it will automatically start the player whenever the disc is put in
a computer that has automatic starting. In that case, the player does not
have to be installed on the computer at all. Also, it's cute and available
in half a dozen "radio" fronts.

[ADMINISTRIVIA: This program does _not_ work on every, "computer that has
automatic starting," of course, it only functions on Windows machines with
automatic starting. Not everyone on the list runs Windows; but then,
Macintosh and linux machines don't really need that "feature" [removed]

David sez:
I hope someone can explain about the
use of "Good" and "Proudfoot" at different times/shows (radio, TV).
According to Parley Baer, he came up with the name Chester Wesley Proudfoot
in an ad-lib, and CBS was concerned he'd assert his rights to the name if they
used it on the TV series. Or so he's said in interviews.
I'm certainly no expert, but I've always had the impression that the
decision to have Chester limp on the TV series may have had something to do
with it. (Which brings up the question: Did Chester limp on radio -- was it
ever mentioned or alluded to? And whose decision was it for Weaver to use
the limp as a charactor trait; Weaver's, a writer, a director, or a
carry-over from radio?)
Then, Hal sez:
Micky's identification with such
early 'Hardy" films, instead of his body of work in some heavy dramatic
roles as an adult, ("Bill" on TV was a classic) would bug a lot of
performers.
Was Dick Crenna similarly irked by an identification with Walter Denton? He
did some fantastic movie work (especially in Sand Pebbles, in my mind) but
he'll always be Walter to me. (Radio Our Miss Brooks is among my very
earliest memories of the entertainment world.)

I was pleased to see that Steve Lewis and the Gotham Radio Players will be
putting on a re-creation of the World War II era radio play "The Battle of the
Warsaw Ghetto" on Friday, Oct. 22 at the FOTR Convention in Newark. The play
was writtten by Morton Wishengrad, one of radio's finest dramatists-- Anyone

The entire text of the play is in Erik Barnouw's "Radio Drama in Action." For

All this back and forth about the Rooney response to a fan and the rep the
Mick has reminded me of a delightful encounter with another movie star at a
supermarket in North Hollywood back in late 80s.
Walking past the glass front doors with my cart, they opened and in
walked Ralph Bellamy with his wife.
Using a walker but moving very well, he looked grand and very noble with
his silver mane and brilliant blue eyes.
I thought about saying something but he was past me before I could.
I felt I wouldn't have known what to say anyway.
Later, pulling my cart up to the checkout stand, I suddenly noticed that
he and his wife were directly in front of me in the line!
Knowing the checkout line to be an accepted area of idle chatter, I
resolved to say something.
"Excuse me, Mr. Bellamy, My name is Michael Gwynne." He turned to me
with a big smile.
I pressed on.
" I just wanna say thank you sir for many great performances over many
years and how wonderful it is to see you looking so good. Always a pleasure
to
see you on the screen and a real delight to see you now. Thanks."
I tipped my nonexistent hat.
He smiled even bigger. Turned to his wife and said, "See."
She smiled ruefully as if to say, "Ya ya ya. so they remember you."
All parties felt good after that encounter.
We even waved good-bye in the parking lot.
I read where he passed on shortly after.
I smiled at the recall of that fine day.

recognized on the street made him proud and her, [removed]
Just like my girl.
Just yesterday when I stood with her in a line at the airport seeing her
off to Florida, a guy behind her said to me,
"Hey, I know you. You're somebody aren't you?"
I turned to her and said,
"See."
She sighed wearily, looked at me and said,
"Excuse me. Do I know you?"
I laffed and left, tipping my nonexistent hat to the man.

Go to [removed] and type winamp in the search
window. They have an older [removed] build that works on
Windows 95 just fine. There are two files there. One
is "full" which adds features that your friend
