ADMINISTRIVIA:
AOL massively bounced the last issue of the Digest; pretty sure no
subscriber from any of the domain names AOL services ([removed],
[removed], [removed], etc.) received issue #86. You can, assuming things
are fixed by now, request it from the archive server.
Apologies, but unfortunately I have no control over what will set AOL
[removed] happens rarely, but routinely, that AOL suddenly decides the
Digest is spam and rejects an issue or two. --cfs3

explains how the state had three people claiming to be governor in the matter of a few months.
It's an interesting story and did not raise the respect of Georgia politics at the time.

An interesting typo in Joe Mackey's most recent contribution re-names Sky
King's juvenile male companion. Joe credits Jack Bivens playing "Chipper."
While the character may have been somewhat chipper in nature, his name was
Clipper.

Joe Mackey must have been a little sleepy, writing out the Sky King Entry.
In addition to "Chipper", he also got the sponsor wrong. It was not Mars
Candy; the long-term sponsor was Peter Pan Peanut Butter, a product of Derby
Foods, Inc.
Many of us recall announcer Myron "Mike" Wallace telling us kids how great
that peanut butter was!

Subject: Jack Benny joke
Alan & Linda Bell asked about a joke on the Jack Benny show where Jack
says he got a call from Georgia to run for governor.
Not sure if the joke was related to these events, but in Georgia at the
end of 1946, Eugene Talmadge had been elected governor for a fourth time
in November 1946, but died before he could take office in January 1947.
While his death was not a laughing matter, I suspect the joke might
have been surrounding that national news that an elected governor died
before he could take office and Georgia was probably grappling with a
need to have new elections.

Subject: Jack Benny joke
What was going on in Georgia in January 1947 to prompt this gag? Jack gets a
call and is offered the governorship, but turns it down. Huh?
What was going on was a political squabble in which three different
people claimed to be the lawful governor of Georgia. At one point, one
occupied the Governor's office and another set up an office elsewhere in
the state capitol. As summarized in Wikipedia:
Eugene Talmadge was elected to a third term in 1946, but died before
taking office. Ellis Arnall, governor at the time, claimed the
office, as did Lieutenant Governor Melvin Thompson. The state
legislature chose Eugene Talmadge's son, Herman Talmadge, to be
governor, but the state supreme court declared this unconstitutional
and declared Thompson rightful governor, and Talmadge stepped down
after 67 days. Talmadge later defeated Thompson in a special election.
A number of years ago, I asked the same question in this forum and
someone posted a rather more detailed description of this donnybrook. I
suppose it can be found somewhere in the archives if you want to find
more of the gory details.
I believe it was Ellis Arnall who actually has an otr connection, having
appeared as a contestant on "You Bet Your Life."
