From Those Were The Days

1933 Backed by the On the Trail portion of the magnificent Grand
Canyon Suite, Johnny Roventini, pillbox hat and all, uttered the words
"Call for Philip Morris" for the first time on radio. The famous phrase
was said in perfect B flat pitch and tone to perfectly match the
accompanying music. This "Call for Philip Morris" phrase became one of
the most famous in all of advertising.
1935 People gathered around to listen for the first time to what would
become the ultimate horror show on NBC, Lights Out.
4/19
1924 The WLS Barn Dance began airing on WLS.
4/20
1935 Your Hit Parade was first broadcast.
1947 Fred Allen didn't find things so funny when censors cut him off
the air during his broadcast. Allen was telling a joke about a mythical
network vice president when he was suddenly taken off the air. One

1940 Take It or Leave It, was first heard on CBS on this day. Bob Hawk
offered contestants a top prize of $64 ($968 in 2009 dollars). No,
there were no lovely parting gifts or consolation prizes that we could
find. Losers just left.
1949 The prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for Broadcasting was
presented to You Bet Your Life star, "The one, the only, Groucho
(Marx)." This was the first time the honor had been awarded to a comedian.
4/22
1940 The first all Chinese commercial radio program was broadcast over
KSAN in San Francisco, CA.
1946 Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenburg arrived at WEAF in New York City
with an entertaining morning show called, Hi, Jinx.

Subject: Tonto
Does anyone know if there is any documentation on how the name Tonto was
chosen for the Lone Ranger's sidekick?
In the language of several southwest native American tribes, Tonto means
foolish, or stupid. I can hear it now: "..along with his faithful Indian
companion, [removed]"
I can't imagine Trendle could have known that and still went along with
using that name.

Subject: Need help with a reference
In a Fibber McGee and Molly script I have there is a reference I cannot
understand. It's at the end of Harlow Wilcox's mid-show commercial. It is
from the first show where Wallace Wimple is heard. Here it is:
Wilcox: And that [removed], let's [removed] we've been on the air for
Johnson's Wax six years [removed]
Fibber: (interruption) [removed]
Wilcox: And I worked for them four years before [removed]'s TEN [removed]
Fibber: (same interruption) [removed]
Wilcox: (getting excited) Yes sir! TEN YEARS! And in ALL that time, I've
never known ANYBODY by the name of Wallace Wimple! (pause for laugh) Isn't
that amazing?
Molly: (feigning amazement) Why, it's unbelievable!
Fibber: Wilcox, is your real name O'Sullivan?
Wilcox: O'Sullivan? No, why?
Fibber: Well, I just wondered. You can find more heels to drag a salestalk
in by than anybody.
So what or who is O'Sullivan?

Subject: Baseball Question
I was listening to the Brooklyn Pinafore episode of the Fred Allen Show, and
it left me with a question. In the song where the umpire "Cockeyed Allen"
is explaining how he became an umpire, there is this lyric:
As an umpire I gained great fame
I called a player out who wasn't in the game
Another decision of which you may have heard
I was the guy who made Greenberg stay on third
The Greenberg line gets a laugh, but I'm not getting the joke. I assume
they're making reference to Hank Greenberg, and I believe that they're
talking about his time with the Tigers. A Google search leads me to think
that it's when he was playing third base and Harry Davis was playing first,
but it doesn't give a lot of context.
I was hoping one of resident baseball history buffs could put the joke in
context for me. What's the history there?
Thanks!
Chris Holm
