Subject: Re: Green Hornet Question
Andrew Steinberg asked about the date for an
episode of the Green Hornet that dealt with a phony
testing lab. At the end it states it's the last show
on Mutual.
Funny you mention that episode Andrew. I hadn't
heard that show for years, as I lost my copy. As luck
would have it, I was looking through Tom Heathwood's
archived programs on the Old Tyme Radio Network, and
there was the episode ( in much better sound than the
copy I had ) in the Oct. 2004 archives! They list the
episode air date as 12/29/40. What makes me wonder if
that's correct is that they list the network as NBC,
but Tom comments after the show about the announcement
that this was the last show on Mutual!
Hope this helps.

Subject: Dorothy Kilgallen
To add to the topic of Dorothy Kilgallen on radio, I have an old magazine ad
for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and it includes Dorothy
Kilgallen, with a photo of her beside an ABC microphone. This appears to be
from the late-1940s, but I don't have an exact year or date for this. Miss
Kilgallen was heard over the ABC radio network at this time once-a-week on
Thursday mornings at 10:45 [removed] EST, sponsored by Drano and Windex.
The full-page ad includes all the ABC newscasters and commentators of that
time, including Walter Winchell, Drew Pearson, Elmer Davis, Raymond Swing,
Don Gardiner and others, including another gossip columnist, Jimmie Fidler.
Also in that category and in the ad is Louella Parsons, who was on the air
right after Winchell's show on Sunday nights. The only other woman in the
ABC ad was journalist Dorothy Fuldheim, who did a weekly program on Saturday
afternoons over ABC radio.
I wonder if anyone has details about Kilgallen's ABC radio program from this
era and how long it lasted?

Subject: Acting on radio [removed] reading
About two weeks ago I posted an observation that Jackson Beck and some other
actors seemed to be reading lines (and somehow therefore failed to convey
the impression of spontaneous occurence). Many people tried to clarify this
situation as being the result of the various proclivities of directors,
experience with the medium of radio and importantly, whether the lines were
or were not memorized.
I had another little "epiphany" last night while listening to Bogart
performing on Romance Theater? (my recording was incomplete), a CBS
afternoon program [removed] I have heard him give VERY convincing
performances on radio on Lux or Director's Guilds etc. but he stumbled
through this one quite a bit, as only someone with minimal rehearsal time or
less interest or both would do. I remembered then that I had heard Myrna Loy
and Clark Gable do this also, but never Agnes Moorehead or Lucille Ball or
Howard Duff etc. So I [removed] did the "spontaneity factor" have to do also
with what the actor considered his primary medium OR the size of the
audience ---"I'm a movie star but this is Lux after all" so I'll rehearse
and really try"!

Hi Gang:
I've been on vacation, away from the e-mails, & now finally able to catch up
on about two weeks of Digests. Here goes:
SPONSOR FREEBIES:
Joe Mackey concluded his item about complimentary items sent to OTR
performers, writers, etc:
I have read where sometimes if a product is mentioned on a show (for
instance say Coca Cola) the next day cases of Coke would appear on
various doorsteps of writers, performers, etc. Did the same thing apply
to higher cost items (cars, etc).
I'm not sure, Joe, but I've been recently watching Lawrence Welk reruns on
PBS, & on one such recent stanza, band member/singer Dick Dale explained in
the latter-day wrap-around segments that every member of the show received a
brand-new Dodge automobile every year when the show was alternately known as
"The Dodge Dance Party." I don't even want to know if the same policy was
extant when Welk's major sponsor was Geritol.
On a related note, I had met Jackson Beck's grandson [I can't remember his
exact name; he's the son of Jackson's stepson-by-marriage Leslie Winters] at
both Jackson's funeral and memorial service. The grandson, who appeared to
have been in his mid-to-late twenties, was the right age in the 1980s to
benefit from his familial connection to Mr. Beck. Y'see, Jackson had the
voice-over account for the [removed] Joe line of toys, and because of this, he
reaped the benefits of receiving complimentary editions of every [removed] Joe
action figure and playset. How cool can that be for a young boy!
I believe in one of the excellent Jack Benny bios [I'm guessing SUNDAY NIGHTS
AT SEVEN by Joan Benny], there is a scene from a radio episode in which Jack
and Rochester are taking inventory. Jack nonchalantly instructs Rochester to
write down [I'm being arbitrary here] "my 1943 Oldsmobile," to which Roch
says "But, boss, you don't have a 1943 Oldsmobile." Jack then confidently
boasts "I Do Now!" suggesting that he'd soon acquire one because of the free
plug. Obviously, the exact details escape me. Oh, Laura?
"SOMEBODY BAWL FOR BEULAH!"
Interestingly, the two actors most associated with "Beulah" died ten years
apart from each other to the day: Hattie McDaniel on 10/26/1952, and Louise
Beavers on 10/26/1962. I'm sure "Professor Birthday" Ron Sayles can
corroborate this.
THE BARRY HILL COLLECTION:
I can think of no better archivist than Dave Siegel to take on and catalogue
this massive collection. It's a shame Barryngton never wrote down all the
jokes--especially his West Virginia ones--to be saved for the ages.
The one question remains: whatever happened to the Ivan Snell Collection,
paricularly his pulps?
SCRIPT-READING:
My Michigander pal Rick Keating opened up a mishegoss by starting his thread
about radio acting versus script-reading. In one of his follow-ups, Rick
wrote:
The late Armand Hammer made a guest
appearance on an episode of _The Cosby Show_, and at
one point while he's talking, it's painfully obvious
that he is _reading_ his dialogue off of cue cards or
a teleprompter off camera.
Maybe Hammer's appearance was Occidental.
Shovelling off into the ether!

Bob Cockrum wants more sublety in audio drama music and sound effects. Amen
and lotsa luck, Bob. This ain't the era of sublety. Like you, if I want
loud, intrusive stereo effects that jolt me out of my seat and make me forget
what the story was about, I will go to a theater. If I prefer to lose myself
in audio theater of the mind, give me good writing and acting and George
Wright with his Hammond Organ. That's all it takes. To those who will
complian about this cranky post, kindly send along a jug of Geritol. Maybe
the alcohol in it will loosen me up so I can better enjoy the New Time shows.

I don't remember whether I ever actually heard Baruch on the radio, but I'll
