I recently found out that Joan Beck, Barney Beck's widow, died Dec 1 of last
year. She attended our FOTR convention for many years and was an excellent
singer, often joining us in the Singer's Panel. Joan and I would correspond
at least once every year before the convention. Jay

Subject: Eddie Anderson voice
Ted Meland asked:
But what about
Anderson? Was his voice natural, or also the result of some accident or
malady?
The story goes that Eddie Anderson damaged his vocal chords by trying to
out-shout other newsboys on the streets of his home town of Oakland, CA.
But there's also been plenty of debate about how much Anderson's voice was
put on vs. natural. I'd recommend a listen to Anderson's first appearance
on the Benny show, along with a review of his film work prior to his
entrance on Benny (especially "Green Pastures") to form your own opinion.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an mp3 or other online recording of
Danny Kaye's marvelous "Begin the Beguine"? I've tried to describe it to my
family, but of course mere words can't begin to do it justice.
Thanks,

I mostly just lurk (but it's interesting lurking!), but I had to come out to
comment on this. Murph may well have broadcast Red Sox games with Curt Gowdy,
but for me and countless other Mets fans he'll always be known for doing the
Mets games on the radio (and on TV as well) from the team's inception in 1962
until his retirement at the end of the 2003 season.
"A long fly ball, hit pretty deep to right center field, it may go, let's

and of course:

Our family listened to "Gunsmoke" on radio and watched it on TV, as well.
Several of the character actors on the radio version appeared on the TV
version
from time to time. But, my biggest surprise came with the TV series, "The
Andy Griffith Show", when 'lo and behold, but Chester (Parley Baer) and Doc
(Howard McNeel) were regular cast members as Mayor Stoner and Floyd Lawson.
They looked nothing like I had imagined Chester and Doc.

Subject: Suspense - Sorry Wrong Number "flub"
There was a discussion awhile back about the first performance of "Sorry
Wrong Number" and the supposed "east coast" and "west coast" versions of
the episode. If you'll recall, the sound effects and actors flubbed the
end of the show in the original performance and it confused listeners; the
supposed "west coast" version of the show is actually a composite program
floating around MP3 traders that "fixes" the error with a replacement from
another performance. (In other words, there was no "east" and "west"
coast performances originally of the program.)
I just got some AFRS Suspense discs in the mail today, one of which is
AFRS Suspense episode number 8, the original performance of "Sorry Wrong
Number" from May 1943.
I can verify that this disc has the "flub", for those that are interested
in documenting this. It also has a hoot of an AFRS opening, with a staff
announcer (not Howard Duff) intoning the intro through an echo chamber
with the most hambone voice you can imagine.
