Subject: Green Hornet-Oliver Perry questions

Lately, I've been listening to my _Green Hornet_
episodes, and I'm interested in finding out as much as
I can about the character of Oliver Perry, the
detective who sought to prove that Britt Reid was the
Hornet.

According to information obtained at the _Green
Hornet_ Wiki at [removed], combined with what I
know from listening to my own _Green Hornet_ episodes,
Oliver Perry appeared in at least the following
adventures:

"Return of Oliver Perry" (8/12/45)
"Unexpected Meeting" (8/23/45)
"Last of Oliver Perry" (2/26/46)
"Grand Larceny on Wheels" (4/23/46)
"Oliver Perry Tries Again" (9/17/46)
"Woman and Oliver Perry" (1/26/47)
"Oliver Perry Closes" (5/17/49)
"Oliver Perry" (11/1/49).

Questions: Are those _all_ the Oliver Perry episodes?
If not, what other ones are there? In "The Unexpected
Meeting" Britt Reid says it's the second time he's
gotten Perry out of a jam, which seems to refer to
events in "The Return of Oliver Perry", but that
doesn't preclude an earlier adventure in which Perry
_wasn't_ in a jam (plus the "Return" title implies a
previous appearance).

Who portrayed Perry?

Was there a particular reason the character was
introduced, especially almost a decade after the
series premiered (assuming there weren't appearances
prior to 1945)?

I do not have the following among the above episodes.
Does anyone know how I could obtain them on either
tape or CD?: "Return of Oliver Perry", "Woman and
Oliver Perry", "Oliver Perry Closes", and "Oliver
Perry."

I _think_ I have "Last of Oliver Perry", but would
have to re-check my records to be sure.

Thanks.

Rick

[removed] Speaking of the _Green Hornet_, I own the 1940
serial and have been watching it for the first time in
more than a decade. Those of you familiar with the old
serials know that very often the cliffhanger _clearly_
shows the hero and/or heroine and/or sidekick crashing
their plane into the mountain, driving their car over
the cliff, slipping on a banana peel while on the top
of the Empire State Building, whichever- only to
reveal in the start of the next episode that they
parachuted from the plane, jumped from the car or
sidestepped the banana peel at the last minute.

Well, in many chapters of the _Green Hornet_ serial,
this doesn't happen. Britt Reid's car goes off a cliff
with him inside at the end of episode X, and he's
_still_ inside at the start of episode Y. Yes, he
_survives_ (it'd be a short serial, otherwise) but- in
that instance at least- they didn't "cheat" by having
him leap to safety when we'd previously seen him still
inside.

[removed] Returning to the radio show, who portaryed the
Sentinel photographer "Clicker" Binney (Benny?) and
how long was she a character on the show? I believe I
have three episodes featuring her.

Subject: Radio shows that outlasted their TV spinoffs

I was reading an entry for Our Miss Brooks the other night and realized
that the radio version actually outlasted the TV version. The only other
radio shows I can think of that did that are Suspense and, I think, Amos
and Andy. Can anyone think of any others?

Subject: Yukon square inch land rush

Reader John Olsen (boy, that name brings back memories) discusses the Sgt.
Preston - Cheerios(?) promotion whereby listeners could get deeds for tiny
pieces of the Yukon - he wasn't sure whether a square inch or a square
foot. I don't recall, either. Presumably the deal was encouraged by the
Yukon tourist industry. Good promotion value all around, like offering
tiny land parcels on the moon, or "officially" naming stars for a
friend. See, kiddies, there is really nothing new under the sun!

I am reminded of the hullabaloo created by the Arthur Godfrey - The
Mariners hit recording of "The Thousand Island Song" in the midst of his
string of big-selling records in the late 1940s and into the 1950s.

He had a shelf-full! Incidentally, when he did a recording with someone
else, like the folk on his program (Chordettes, Janette Davis) or others
(Mary Martin, Laurie Anders), I am told reliably by those in the
know, that Mr. Godfrey told Columbia Records to give his fee for that
session to the other performer(s).

Without my notes I don't recall all the technicalities and names, but an
official of the St. Laurence River agency thought it would be a great
publicity gimmick to deed one of the actual Thousand Islands (actually more
than that) between New York and Canada, to Mr. Godfrey. And of course to
do so during a Godfrey CBS network broadcast with suitable fanfare,
photographs, and the like. Mr. Godfrey went along with the
idea. Certainly it couldn't hurt, as it helped him and added sales for the
record.

So all was done. As far as I can find out, I don't recall that Mr. Godfrey
ever visited "his island". I believe that ultimately he returned the deed
to the agency. It is not the only Arthur Godfrey Island - there is one in
Florida so named, part of the Nature Conservancy area. I have an aerial
photograph of same, purchased from his estate.

I do know that up until a few years back - and quite possibly to this date
- one of the 1000 Islands bore a large sign on it reading "Arthur Godfrey
Island", readily visible from passing vessels. I have a postcard and
amateur photos of it, taken from one of the tourist boats which takes folk
meandering along the river and among some of the islands.

In the recording, Godfrey is in a rowboat seeking his missing girl friend
Florence (convenient rhyme). The lyrics start, "Row, row, row your boat -
up the River St. Laurence - hollering, hollering, hollering, hollering for
Florence". At one point he exasperates "Where can you be? That was
Island 793!" Presumably that was the island on the Godfrey deed, but it
is NOT the one with the sign - presumably as the real Godfrey Island is
somewhere unseen, surrounded by too many others.

Ironically, I just looked up the song and bought sheet music on eBay for it
from the original 1947 Musical Revue, "Angel in the Wings", show which
featured it. Thankful coincidence! This song was also recorded by Johnny
Mercer (friend of the composer) and Louis Prima. I'm seeking copies of
each, and any others which anyone might know. Prima BTW covered a number
of Godfrey hits. Apparently Godfrey and Prima were the "novelty song"
kings at CRI and RCA respectfully.

And now fans and Paul Harvey, you know "the rest of the story"!

Subject: Big Inch Deeds

I've read that the deeds for the Yukon Territory from Challenge of the
Yukon (AKA Sgt. Preston of the Yukon) were declared invalid because of
some technicality, along the lines of that they weren't homesteaded, no
land taxes were paid on them, etc.

I had one of those deeds when they came out, but it's gone now. However,
if I still had it, would I be a bona-fide landowner of Yukon territory.

Anyone know for sure?

Subject: Sgt. Preston portrayers

John Mayer tells us that Richard Simmons claimed to have taken the radio
role of Sgt. Bill Preston "a few times". I respect Mr. Mayer's account, and
I also think Mr. Simmons ought to know if he played the stalwart sergeant on
the radio, but I must express my doubts. Jay Michael originated the role
when the program was a 15 minute show once a week, then Paul Sutton took it
on until George W. Trendle summarily fired him after The Lone Ranger ended
its live run in September, 1954. Always a tightwad, Trendle then had Brace
Beemer (since he was still under contract) play the role until the program
left the air in early 1955.
I just can't see Trendle paying another actor to play the role "a few
times". Fred Foy actually subbed for Beemer once when Brace decided not to
show up at the last minute. The announcement at the end of that program
informed listeners that "Mr. Beemer is expected to rejoin the cast next
week"!
