Subject: Norman Corwin
Bob Cockrum wrote that he found the language of Norman Corwin's radio plays
". . . often troubling, smacking of one-worldism (United Nations) . . .
forgoing [removed] sovereignty in the pursuit. and that it's . . . clear enough
why those who saw a Commie behind every bush in those days thought they
might have spotted one in his case.
I would like to comment that during the blacklist era, on the West Coast,
actor Ward Bond played the role of "clearing" people who were accused of
being communists, for the whole motion picture industry. Like supermarket
owner Lawrence Johnson on the east coast Bond became a self proclaimed expert
on who was and who was not a communist.
Regarding Corwin, as I stated in my book WORDS AT WAR (Scarecrow Press), Bond
told blacklisted radio director Bill Robson, "We know Corwin was not a
communist, never was a communist,". . . "But he'll do until one comes along."
If the world needs people to pass judgment on whether the political views of
others are "the right ones," why not have an actor or a supermarket owner
filling that role.

Subject: The Honeymooners & OTR
I've been catching up on my old TV viewing. I always have hopes of catching
some OTR actor on screen. I was watching "The Loudspeaker", #30 of the
classic 39 Honeymooners series where Ralph thinks he has been selected as
"Raccoon of the Year." In it, Morris Fink, Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler of
the Raccoons visits and tells Alice that it's actually Ed who has been
selected.
Very often these parts are not credited. So I looked up the episode in IMDB
and learned it was Jock MacGregor, who was the director of shows such as Nick
Carter. From looking at IMDB an in the Dunning references, I had forgotted
that MacGregor had a rather busy and varied career.
Among the Honeymooners regulars was George Petrie, who at one time in his
career was radio's Falcon. Petrie played managers, executives, bus drivers,
and many other parts in the series. Another radio Falcon, Les Damon, was also
in some episodes. John Gibson, "Ethelbert" of the Casey Crime Photographer
series is in four episodes. Luis van Rooten was in two episodes.
The IMDB listing of credited and uncredited actors is at
[removed]#cast -- I'm sure I'm missing
a few others in there.
Of course, Art Carney was one of radio's greats himself. He was so
successful, he probably could buy a string of poloponies :)
Regards to all

Subject: The NY Suspense run
I've finally listened my way almost through to the end of the Suspense run,
and have been surprised that the NY run (which started 8/30/1959) is better
than I anticipated. The Hollywood run clearly ran out of gas, and the NY run
seemed to be refreshed a bit with the steady stable of NY actors. Sure, it
had its clunkers, but it seemed even the canned music was better handled and
the actors writers were paying more attention than the dying Hollywood
version. I'm not enough of an historian to know how many of the scripts and
plots were recycled for the NY run, but I suspect some of Robert Arthur's
scripts were from his Mysterious Traveler archives.
It's also been nice to hear the voices of many of the guests from the early
radio conventions as they worked in the golden age of radio's last gasp. It's
also odd to hear Mandel Kramer now an then on Suspense, as I associate his
voice with Johnny Dollar, of course. The YTJD New York run wasn't a slouch
either. While OTR fans all love Bob Bailey's rendition, Kramer is always held
in very high regard.
Anyone have any details of the switch from Hollywood to NY? I assume it was a
combination of cost and the desire of the network to focus its Hollywood
resources to TV. I've always found it interesting that there is no special
mention about the switch on the shows other than the usual "from Hollywood"
becoming "from New York." I've looked for some newspaper articles about the
switch and haven't been able to find any online.
Regards
Joe Webb

Mike Nevins, best known under the authorship of Francis M. Nevins, has
revised two books he wrote back in the 1970s or early 1980s, HOPALONG CASSIDY
and THE CISCO KID. Mike will be looking for a couple old-time radio shows to
be a guest on to talk about the two radio programs. Any radio show hosts
interested, e-mail him at nevinsfm@[removed]

Hi.
Other than "Three Skeleton Key" and a Superman story, what other OTR stories
took place in a Lighthouse or featured a Lighthouse?

Paul Harvey would be returning to the airwaves for his weekend show this
