There are 4 clips from Fibber McGee and Molly that were featured
on the showMonitor dealing with Luther Burbank's birthday and Girl Scout
Week.
These wereapparently broadcast on the same date, but it is not clear to me
which [removed] are 3 possibilities: 1) 59-05-09 The date on my mp3 files ;
2)

LutherBurbank's birthday, reference to holidays in February, but no holidays

this?

While I only glanced at it briefly, I believe Fibber McGee and Molly did more
than
four. A new book from Bear Manor Media about Fibber McGee and Molly
covers this in detail and lists each and every appearance on the show. If I
had
a copy of the book, I would post an answer, but citing the book should anyone

Andrew Steinberg asked about the dates of the monitor programs dealing with
Luther Burbank's birthday and Girl Scout Week. My source of information comes
from "Fibber McGee's Closet: The Ultimate Log of Performances By Fibber McGee
and Molly 1917 - 1987" written by Tom Price. Mr. Price researched the actual
bound scripts in Jim Jordan's personal collection to compile this extensive
log. Concerning the monitor segments Mr. Price writes:

"Early into this segment of the log, the reader will note that script themes
do not coincide with broadcast dates and seasonal events. Script information
is listed in the same order that the writers numbered and submitted their
work. This is also the same order in which the Jordans taped and shipped the
shows to NBC, New York. Broadcast dates from first to last are actual. One
can only guess that NBC producers aired the vignettes in a timely order".

When I encoded these mp3's and placed them into circulation, I referred to Tom
Price's log, used his titles and dates. According to this log, the "Burbank -
Girl Scouts" segments (a,b,c,d,e) were broadcast on 5-09-59.

Hope this is helpful,

Jeff Davis

Thanks to Bob Cockrum for the heads-up on Stuart Elliott repeating in the New

We have sent in a correction, telling them that after seven and five note
sequences, the first 3-note sequence was C-A-F in 1931, and even that was
several years after GE had to sell its share of NBC. G-E-C was not used
until late 1932, and GE was out of RCA by early 1929. Once again I want to
mention Michael Shoshani's NBC Chimes Museum at [removed]
where you can hear the oldest recordings of the chimes, and see some of the
actual chime-set models used. By the way, I now have a hi-fi color videotape
of a Rangertone Chimes in operation and another audio recording of a mid-30s
hand-struck chimes that will soon be added to the site.

Last night I listened to my first episode of Dr. IQ. One gimmick of the show
is that contestants who don't get the right answer get a box of Dr. IQ candy
bars as a consolation prize. Does anybody remember these? They're a mix of
chocolate, peanuts, nougat and caramel. Sounds a bit like Snickers, though if
the ingredients ratio was different it might have tasted very different. Does
anybody know or recall what a Dr. IQ Candy Bar was like?

Someone posted the following on a historical memorabilia discussion board to
which I subscribe. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I have just inherited a huge library of home recordings from the early 1940's
that include such things as speeches by FDR and Truman, news programs, musical
programs, etc. These were recorded on a home recorder that produced 7 inch
discs that seem to be a combination of record and cardboard-like material. In
the time frame that these were recorded, there were very few people who owned
home recording devices. Some of these speeches and things are probably very
rare. I can't find out any information about something like this, or even what
they would be called. Has anyone heard of recordings like this?

I'm thinking that this could be right up the alley of someone on the OTR
Digest.

Regards to all,
Art Funk

Subject: audio books from BearManor Media

Hi, all. Remember way back when, I said we were going to offer audio books at
BearManor Media? Well, the day is coming sooner than later. We're on the
verge of putting a few select titles on the site for sale. Already recorded
are Al Lerner and Janet Gari (Eddie Cantor's daughter). And now various
authors are working on recording It's That Time Again, Son of Harpo, and
Peggy Ann Garner. I'd be Pleased to hear what you'd like us to start with.
All feedback appreciated since recording audio books for cd is an expensive,
lengthy process. We won't be able to do all titles at once, or even in the
first couple years. So speak up!

On a side note, it looks like my new Alan Reed book will Not be ready for the
Newark convention which my wife and I are attending. I still have to do the
index, in the midst of packing for an early Nov. move! But! Everyone will
easily have their AR books before Thanksgiving, I should say. So hold on.

And again, thanks to you all for your support, and thanks for reading books.

Subject: Re: Oxydol and other radio era brands

Jim Cox noted and was startled by the appearance of Oxydol from a company
which is not Proctor & Gamble. During the 1970s I was a salesman for P&G
selling their line of health and beauty aids and then later their food
division
prodcts. Things have changed considerably since those days.

I hate to break the news, but P&G has made major changes in their
company, including shedding many old brands. They bought the Gillette
company, but
since the turn of this century P&G has sold off a great many product bands
which should be very familiar to listeners of old time radio, including Spic
&
Span, Pert, Prell Shampoo, Duncan Hines, Jif peanut butter, Folgers Coffee,
and even Crisco, one of the company's oldest products, developed in 1911 and
a brand which established P&G as a major force in the food field.

Corporations have to do what has to be done to stay profitable, and
considering how many millions of stockholders P&G has, all demanding that
dividends be paid every single quarter, even profitable brands get dumped in
an
effort to focus on products which deliver a higher gross profit on investment
costs. All of the products P&G has sold off were successful for many years,
and
are still viable brands, otherwise they would not have found buyers, but it
is disheartening to see tradition flushed down the drain.

The fact that advertising for products such as Oxydol and most other
consumer products these days is limited and extremely expensive was
undoubtedly
a major contributing factor to those decisions to sell off the brands. TV
ads cost a fortune, even with the diversity of networks and stations
available
these days, while magazine sales are down and the ad costs for print
advertising are also way up, and still rising despite the decline in
circulation for
magazines and newspapers. Until somebody figures out an effective, cost
efficient way to reach consumers these shifts are going to continue.

In the old days radio reached most everyone in the country easily, and
virtually every home received a daily newspaper. With that situation the
cost
of an impression per consumer of an ad message was relatively low. That's
no longer true. Millions of people use the Internet, but there has been no
really efficient way to turn the Internet into positive ad response. Until
some solution is discovered we will see even more consolidation and shifts in
brands and companies, and I'm not sure this is necessarily a good thing.

Subject: Copyrighted sounds

The NBC Chimes is the other. Though you are not allowed to copyright sounds,
the copyright procedure for that was the three notes. Whether NBC goes after
anyone using those same three notes in the same order I don't know, but I
recall a joke in a Three Stooges short where, in prison, they drop the black
balls they carry connected to their legs in chains and it makes the NBC
Chimes.

The sound of the creaking door can be questioned. While Himan Brown claims he
owns the copyright to that sound, and reused it for the CBS RMT, what he did
was submit a recording of the radio program and registered on the copyright
form a note about the sound of the creaking door. What he really did was
register the copyright for the episode itself, but rather than enforce
ownership of the recording, he claims ownership of the creaking door sound
and since that is what he noted on the copyright registration, he can (on a
technicality) enforce that. Registered through the Library of Congress on
February 17, 1949 under the name "The Creaking Door" not "Inner Sanctum
Mystery" and submitted in the form of a sample radio program.

I would appreciate any info.

While there are a few places on-line that offer information, half of the info
is wrong from what I compared to the original scripts. Even Dunning's
reference guide once made an error about the program that was the complete
opposite of what the show was about. Not sure of any places that offer the
series in downloads but I do know the copyright registrations were renewed and
have been enforced on one occassion.

Bear Manor Media [removed] offers a book for sale all about the

you have about STRAIGHT ARROW.
