In issue 86 Gareth asked about Tommy Handley in the [removed]

"Tommy Handley, British Comedian of ITMA fame travelled to the USA in the
summer of 1947 and appears on at last one American radio programme that
summer "we the people".

I wondered if anyone knew if this show was available?"

Tommy Handley spent a lot of time in Australia over the years and did many
shows. ITMA (Its That Man Again) doesn't seem to have many episodes
surviving in the [removed] but I have quite a large number of 16" discs of the
show. I have been working with a representative of the BBC identifying the
Australian cast of Dick Barton as they are going to do more releases and
they only knew the name of one cast member. I told him about my ITMA discs
but he wasn't interested, seems he is drama and they are comedy and the
usual 'not my area' result. ITMA was a flagship program of the BBC for many
years and I thought a surviving stash would have been of interest for anyone
working for them to pass on the whereabouts. Oh well, at least now they
finally know all the Australian cast members of Dick Barton, about seven
released series too late.

1942 People Are Funny went on the air with host Art Baker.

According to Art Linkletter's 1960 book, "People are Funny," the show
started with Art Linkletter and Art Baker co-hosting. Five weeks into
the show, Baker complained that he and Linkletter were incompatible, and
he would either host the show alone or would quit. Since the show was
owned by a partnership of Linkletter and Guidel, they notified the ad
agency that Baker was leaving and Linkletter would handle the show
alone. But the agency considered Baker, the more prominent radio
personality, the fair-haired boy and thought to fire him would
jeopardize the show. The show was, at the time, a summer replacement
show and not yet firmly established, so Linkletter withdrew and returned
to San Francisco and various local radio gigs, while contributing gags
and ideas to the show through weekly letters to Guidel. After over a
year of this, the show became "The New People Are Funny," Baker was
gone, and Linkletter returned as sole host.

If Linkletter was remembering accurately that the show started as a
summer replacement show, then the October 1942 date may be the date that
it debuted as a regular-season show.

1930 Death Valley Days was first heard on the NBC Red network this day
(and) became one of radio's biggest hits. The 30 minute, Western
adventure series starred Tim Daniel Frawley as the Old Ranger, ...

I remember this show in its television incarnation, hosted by Stanley
Andrews as "The Old Ranger." Andrews was succeeded by Ronald Reagan,
who hosted it until sometime in 1966, when he ran for Governor of
California. Reagan was succeeded by Robert Taylor, who was later
succeeded by Dale Robertson.
