Back in earlier days of the Digest I used to have html web pages on a site of
mine. I'd steer readers to it where they could see photos and read text about
what I could recall about my early radio days experiences. The site is gone
now but I still have some of the text threads on disk about the various radio
personalities with whom I associated.
Charlie Lung
"The Man of 100 Voices"
He called himself Charlie Lung, "The Man of 100 Voices." In conversations I
had with him I got that 'Charlie Lung' wasn't his real name, but a stage name
he used in his earlier vaudeville days. He once told me that he'd appear on
stage all dressed in Chinese regalia, an embroidered red and gold robe, an
exotic headress wearing a wig with a long braided queue down the back and
upon entrance he'd face the audience and bow, then straighten to an erect
stance and turn around to move backstage. But on the back of his robe would
be written in sewn white letters on a red round cloth, "Drink Coca Cola." Now
I don't know if the story is true but Charlie said those words to me. He also
said he chose the name 'Charlie Lung' for to him it sounded inane much like
"Tommy Liver", but he wanted the name to sound Chinese to go along with the
Chinese looking stage personality he portrayed. I don't know what his act
was, maybe magic? At any rate one thing I do know is that whenever I was
called to do a show and if upon arrival at rehearsal time I saw Charlie was
on the show as well, I could count upon getting a whole new batch of jokes
for my collection. I used to sop up all the jokes I heard told at rehearsals
and being as young as I was, I could remember them as well.
greatest sounding voices for the characters he portrayed. My brother and I
still after all these years both mimic his very moving "Warren" from the pen
of Ted Sherdiman's "Latitude Zero" show. "Me Warren, me man, me man."

CLASSICS & CURIOS
"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"
Episode 34
Eddie Hubbard & The Browsers: "Lavender Blue" "Memories of You"
Time for the Browsers with one of their historic radio shows from
their 25 years on ABC Radio. Enjoy music, big band trivia, humor, and
wit from some of the most knowledgeable men in the music field. DJ Eddie
Hubbard and Browsers President Phil Holdman keep the show moving with
recordings such as "Exactly Like You," "Memories of You," "A Table in
the Corner," "Don't Be That Way," "Farewell Blues," "September in the
Rain," "DJ Jump," "My Ideal," "Josephine," and "Nice Work If You Can Get
It." In addition, Eddie reprises "Hard to Get" with Giselle MacKenzie.
Other performers include Benny Goodman, Eddy Howard, Stan Kenton, Billy
Eckstein, Frankie Laine, Francis Langford, Gene Krupa, and Clyde McCoy.
Eddie plays an extra tune, "Lavender Blue (Dilly, Dilly)," a recording
by Sammy Kaye & the Three Kaydets which charted at #4 in Billboard in
1948. This song, sung by Burl Ives, was also nominated for an academy
award in the 1948 film "So Dear to My Heart." "Lavender" was, of course,
also a big hit for Dinah Shore and others as well. As always, you can
share in answering trivia questions like, "When and where did Benny
Goodman introduce the tune "Don't Be That Way?" And "What band leader
gave Francis Langford her first job?" Also, "Name some songs with a
farewell in the title." We'll depend on Eddie to answer Phil's closing
"Phooler" in a later broadcast.
Thanks to Jerry Haendiges Productions for adapting Eddie Hubbard's
original studio tapes for rebroadcast.
