Several years ago Radiola Records released an LP that contained a
program called "The Magic Radio." It featured Fibber McGee & Molly.
Fibber had rigged a radio so that I could tune in shows from
yesteryear.

That sounds an awful lot like NBC's 25th Anniversary special in 1951.
Fibber and Molly narrate it and it features clips of various comedy variety
shows
as well as one clip of an actor (John Gielgud? Ralph Richardson?) performing
a scene from a William Shakespeare play.

Subject: Benny TV DVD set

I wouldn't mention this except that the price is so cheap. In the $5
DVD section of our local Wal-Mart I found today a four-disc Mill Creek
set of Jack Benny TV shows. Some of these have shown up on other discs,
but here's about 35 of 'em for just five bucks along with a few extras
like two GE Theater programs he starred in, a B&A he guested on, a March
of Time newsfilm "Show Business At War", and Bing Crosby's TV debut
program for GE. Most of the Benny's have network Lucky Strike openings,
many have commercials, and the 1960 Xmas shopping program has Don
Wilson's middle State Farm Insurance commercial scene. The films are
not pristine or restored but are watchable. Even Jack would say that
they are well worth the five bucks.

Usual disclaimers apply. Surely you don't think Wal-Mart would pay me a
kickback.

Hi Gang -
In Issue 236, Neal Ellis asked what series "The Magic Radio" featuring
Fibber McGee and Molly originated. I first heard this program on the air
when it
was originally broadcast. At that time I thought I was listening to a Fibber
and Molly broadcast. I still think it was first broadcast on the Fibber
McGee and Molly program.
Perhaps it might have been re-broadcast on some other series.

Subject: Wall Street Journal Review of "Hello Everybody"

The Wall Street Journal today reviews "Hello Everybody," a history of the
"hustlers, hobbyists, hustlers, quacks, con men and the stray unstable
geniuses" who founded radio in its early days.

He covers not just the business of radio but many of the performers as well,
so it might be of interest to those on the list.

I have an episode of Kay Fairchild, Stepmother that I think is dated May 2,
1941. At the end of the episode, the announcer says, "Well, yesterday was
moving day for a lot of you folks. I suppose you will be busy over the weekend
getting settled." Was May 1st some type of popular date to move in 1941?

Thanks everyone for all your assistance in finding those broadcast
dates
I've been looking for. Luckily, I've found the correct episode names for
"That
Hammer Guy" that I was looking for, but not the dates (although someone told
me that they were both from 1953).

The episodes I'm trying to get broadcast dates on are titled "Mike's
Friend
Murdered" and Zelda's Brother ([removed] "Velda's Brother"). Any help (a site,
or
library with a Mike Hammer collection, anything) would help and be
appreciated.

If you happen to know where I can find this info, please write me off
list
at kclarke5@[removed].

My wife spoke to Sonny's wife, Helen. Here is the latest update as of
last week.

There was no damage to the heart. His lungs are clear. His blood
pressure was fluctuating.

The hospital where Sonny is at, is in Baltimore. Helen has been
spending most of the time at the hospital and had only checked her
phone messages once since the attack.

We had sent Sonny a get well card and Helen told Sonny about the card
and he acknowledged it. So he is aware of what is going on.

I think the best thing to do is to send any cards or letters to
Sonny's home and Helen will get them and take them to the hospital.
I'm sure she will call us if anything changes in his condition.

always been intrigued by those call letters in NY (WABC was CBS, [removed]). Did
WEAF stand for western electric audio feed, or some such?
