 From Those Were The Days

8/9

1942 CBS debuted Our Secret Weapon. The program featured Rex Stout,
who countered lies being broadcast by the Axis powers through shortwave
radio.

8/11

1909 The international distress call, SOS, which replaced CQD (All
stations distress!), was first used by an American ship "The Arapahoe"
(out of Cape Hatteras, NC) on this day.

8/12

1937 Comedian Red Skelton got his first taste of network radio as he
appeared on the Rudy Vallee Show on NBC.

8/13

1912 St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, PA was granted the first
experimental radio license by the [removed] Department of Commerce.

8/14

1933 WLW in Cincinnati, OH premiered Ma Perkins. Just four months
later, Ma moved to WMAQ in Chicago and was heard over the entire NBC
network. Virginia Payne was 23 years old when she started in the title
role. Ma Perkins operated a lumberyard in Rushville Center. Her children
were Evey, Fay and John (who was killed in the war). One of the other
characters in the show was Shuffle Shober. Virginia Payne played Ma
Perkins for 27 years and 7,065 episodes.

1942 Garry Moore hosted a new program on NBC. The Show Without a Name
was an effort to crack the morning show dominance of Arthur Godfrey
(CBS) and Don McNeil's Breakfast Club (ABC). A prize of $500 was offered
to name the show and Someone came up with the title, Everything Goes.

1945 CBS began the series, Columbia Presents Corwin. Orson Welles did
a special reading about the fall of Japan, titled, Fourteen August.

8/15

1911 Procter & Gamble Company of Cincinnati, OH introduced Crisco
hydrogenated shortening. (Where would all those shows have been with
Crisco as a sponsor? And remember, its digestible! ed)

Subject: re: OTR and MP3
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

I used to do a lot of live music trading from bands that allow their shows to
be recorded. The basic standard in most trading communities is that you want
the closest thing to the original recording as possible. In most cases that is
the recorders original media transferred to WAV. WAV in terms of bitrate is
1411kbps. Think about this, in MP3 terminology 320kbps is considered near CD
quality. Near CD quality would be say, 1100kbps. 320 doesn't even scratch that
but most people cannot tell the difference between 320kbps MP3 files and pure
WAV files. Where people start hearing the difference is when MP3 starts
dipping to 256, 128, and lower. Just depends on the MP3 and the listener. If
it's music, you tend to hear shimmering in the high end sound range. Spoken
word can get really "wobbly" at 24kbps and lower. Again, just depends on the
MP3 (better yet, depends on the codec that compressed it since each one is
slightly different). I have a hard time telling you the difference between
256kbps MP3 and WAV audio files. I need to have headphones on to notice. For
spoken word (or OTR) I can rarely tell. I have only run into a handful of
shows that were truly un-listenable.

The problem with WAV is size. WAV is roughly 10MB to 11MB for every minute of
audio. That's huge. To help get around this problem, lossless audio
compression comes into play. While there have been several formats over the
years like SHN, APE, and WV, FLAC has essentially "won". FLAC can compress a
WAV file without throwing out any data unlike MP3 which does. FLAC reduces WAV
files by about 30 to 40%. Great for archiving recordings. A lot of recorders
will also add an MD5 checksum file with their files. This way when you
uncompress the FLAC file you can verify that it creates the same checksum
file. This means your WAV file is identical to the original. I've sent files
out on the web and checked them two years later - checksums came back
identical. The only time the checksum would be different would be if the file
was corrupt or someone modified the WAV file.

The basic "rule of thumb" in trading is that FLAC is for
trading/storage/archiving and MP3 is for everyday listening. A lot of bands
release live records and albums for download in FLAC format - Paul McCartney's
band the Fireman released their new album in FLAC format on their website.

The best part is if you have FLAC files, you simply uncompress them back to
WAV (the FLAC file stays intact so you can do this millions of times if you
want) and either listen to the WAV file as is or convert the file into a more
portable device format and size like MP3. Best of both worlds.

The drawback is that a lot of old recordings in the trading communities were
compressed into formats that are hardly used anymore like APE and to a lesser
extent SHN. Those formats have not been updated in years now. One bands
community (Nirvana) took steps a few years ago to re-compress every known
recording into FLAC so they had a good standard that is being updated going
forward.

It would be nice to see something like this in the OTR community but I don't
know if it would happen. There is simply no way to go back and re-record some
of the recordings to WAV.

In the meantime, I enjoy the 24, 32, and 64kbps MP3 OTR files I've pulled from
various sources. I listen to OTR everyday. As my son get's older (he's only 2)
I plan on "hooking" him on OTR. We've already started with Cinnamon Bear for
the past two Christmas'. I know he doesn't get it now but at least I can tell
him he was listening to Cinnamon Bear when he was only 4 months old.

Subject: Radio Recall: "Super" Issue

Digesters are advised that the August 2009 issue of RADIO RECALL has
been sent to our PDF subscribers and the hard copy will be mailed out
next week.

Superman scholar, Michael J. Hayde, author of Bear Manor Media's
newly released "Flights of Fancy; The Unauthorized but True Story of
Radio and Television's Adventures of Superman" has written two
articles for this issue. The front page article is entitled "Criminal
Casebook: Radio's Whydunit" which details the history of Mutual's
series from the team that also produced "Hop Harrigan" and "Adventure
Parade."

A second piece by Hayde contains all the current information about
the annual "Superman Celebration" in Metropolis, IL, the official
home of Superman, even tho it's on the banks of the Ohio River,
directly across from Paducah, KY.

There is also an in-depth interview of Ken Krug, who resigned this
summer as the editor of "The Illustrated Press," the official organ
of the Old-Time Radio Club (of western NY.) In this article, Ken
reveals how he got into OTR plus why (and how) he stayed at the
editorial reins for over a dozen years.

Edgar Farr Russell III describes the collection of disks, albums,
audio tapes, and books recently donated to the club by Ric Nelson,
retired CBS sound engineer. In addition the club recently received
several cassettes covering the Marx Brothers on radio, contributed by
Ronny and Marcia Bauman.

Jim Cox's new book, "American Radio Networks" released by McFarland,
is reviewed by the scribe of Herndon, VA, Maury Cagle. In addition,
there is a summary of the 20 different accents claimed by George
Reeves (TV's Superman) on his 1949/51 radio acting resume.

movies given less release to the DVD market every month, this will explain
things perfectly. For anyone who has been waiting for Universal to release
the 1948 movie of THE LIFE OF RILEY with William Bendix or the 1945 movie of

Thank goodness we have vendors who seek out the rare and un-released films
and make them available for sale at old-time radio conventions. Three years
ago I bought a copy of LARCENY ON THE AIR from 1937, concerning a radio show
host who crusades against a fake doctor who is peddling a radium-based
cure-alls to an unsuspecting public. The placement of the radio microphone
was unusual and this wasn't something the major studios was going to

I was in Fry's recently and picked up a coupla DVDs of the above
reference films. One in particular may be of interest to OTR collectors,
altho from the web site I am not sure if it is still available.

Timeless Media Group TMG 66013 contains a report on the 5th Army mobile
radio station. There is a shot of a "studio", a fellow cueing up a
transcription, and the record playing on the turntable. The sound track
heard is actually from the ANSM "Command Performance" film with an intro
by Bob Hope.

I posted about that film earlier this year after I saw it in the Army
Museum on Oahu, Hawaii. It is also available for free DL on the net.
