Subject: RE: Fibber Film

The film of Fibber McGee and his sound effects man opening the closet that
Bob Cockrum asks about was filmed in 1946 or 47 for The March Of Time
newsreel titled "Radio Today". I have it on 16mm film but I think it might
be on one of Martin Grimes' DVD compilations. I loaned the film to Fred
Berney a couple of years ago and he might be putting it on a Satellite Media
DVD. The segments from this MOT have been used in many compilations
including the HBO "Remember When" program about radio narrated by Dick
Cavett, but I don't remember if this clip was on it. I don't see this clip
yet on YouTube or Prelinger, but maybe it is somewhere on line.

Subject: Sound and Fury

Some weeks ago a link was posted about a story listing the best books
about old radio. Most would be familiar to most of us. One I didn't
recognize was Sound and Fury by Francis Chase.
The Pratt Library in Baltimore had a copy so I went and pick it up. Now
I didn't have high hopes, because it had last been taken out in April
1990, but it was a pleasant surprise. It was written around the time
the US entered WWII. Published in 1942 the author apparently had to
revise with the flow of current events.
The book covers the history of early radio, and most facets of radio;
drama, comedy, news, propaganda and the development of radio for war use.
One the best chapters covers Munich crisis and how radio news was able
to bring the story into American homes.

Subject: Getting One "Up" on Superman

I've been wading though over 1,000 circulating
episodes of radio's various "Superman" [removed] and
I've yet to hear the Man of Steel say "Up! Up and
away!" When he's taking off, it's always just "[removed]
and away!" Sometimes, when he's is already flying,
he'll say "Up! Up!" (or "Down! Down!"), but he never
adds "...and away!"

So, gang: is "Up! Up and away!" a misquoted catch
phrase (much like "Just the facts, ma'am" or "Play it
again, Sam")? Does it derive from the two magazine
articles by that title (Saturday Eve. Post in 1941 and
New Republic in 1947)? Or can someone give me at
least one broadcast date where he DOES actually say
it?

Thanks,
Michael

Subject: Howard McNear

Speaking of Howard [removed]
A few years ago I was watching the 1932 movie Grand Hotel on VHS. In the very last
scene, as a new group of guests are checking in, two people exit a large car and
walk to the lobby-the spiffily dressed man says something (I don't remember what)
to the woman and he sounds exactly like Howard McNear. I re-wound the tape to
catch it several times and would have sworn that it was him. Does anyone know? I
searched through the film credits and he is not listed, but it was a very short
clip.
