I have just been checking the BBC Press Office website for Network Radio here
in the UK, and I see that BBC Radio 2 are starting a new 3 part series about
how Nazi Germany developed tape recording in the 1930s. The series starts at
2330 UK time on Monday 16th March.
Cheers ! Graeme ( ORCA )

I saw an "I Heart OTR" bumper sticker on a car on Oak Street in Cincinnati
this month. Which one of you was it?
In all probability, it was someone who loves the district of Cincinnati known
as Over-The-Rhine. Much the way that our friends who live in the "Northside"
part of town have stickers that say "I Heart Northside".

Subject: Baby Snooks on May 2
On Saturday evening, May 2nd (at the SPERDVAC Old-Time Radio
Convention in North Hollywood), I'll finally get to do something I've
been wanting to do for a very long time: direct a re-creation of "The
Baby Snooks Show"--a show my father wrote (with Everett Freeman) for
the great Fanny Brice during the 1940s.
Fanny played "Snooks Higgins" -- a mischievous but wise-beyond-her-
years little girl who constantly drove her daddy crazy. My father's
experience writing the Snooks character for Fanny Brice inspired him
to create the "I Love Lucy" character: "Lucy Ricardo" -- a mischievous
little girl (in a grown woman's body) who constantly drove her HUSBAND
crazy. (Dad actually first created this character for Lucy on radio,
as "Liz Cugat/Cooper" of "My Favorite Husband").
My problem with doing a re-creation has always been casting -- where
could I find someone who could really pull off the character of
"Snooks" ? That voice is everything. Then one day it hit me--Shari
Lewis's "Lamb Chop" sounded just like Snooks! Alas, Shari is no
longer with us, but since her passing, her daughter, Mallory Lewis,
has continued her mother's legacy by making appearances with Lamb
Chop. I contacted Mallory, who immediately said, "Yes, absolutely,
let's do it!"
Casting the rest of the show was a lot easier. Harold Gould (Mr.
Morgenstern on TV's "Rhoda"), was a natural for "Lancelot
Higgins" (Hanley Stafford). Known for stage, screen, and TV, Hal
actually got his acting start in old-time radio--on WGY in
Schenectady, appearing on the locally-produced dramatic program, "The
FBI in Action." Tommy Cook, who sometimes made appearances as Snooks's
little boyfriend Alexander Bumstead (a crossover from "Blondie"),
readily agreed to reprise that role. And Gloria McMillan ("Harriet
Conklin" of "Our Miss Brooks"), who also made frequent appearances on
the "Baby Snooks," was just as eager to join in the fun.
So I'm really looking forward to May 2nd.
I actually get to direct three whole shows at this year's convention,
and I'm excited about all of them. If you're interested, I've posted
the details at [removed]

Subject: 21st Precinct
Hi folks! I am a fairly recent convert to the joys of OTR being
recently retired and able to spend the time exploring the shows
available on the Internet. Being English my memories of these shows
are limited to the few that I was able to listen to via the American
Forces Network (AFN) which our old "Wireless" could pick up in the
immediate post-war years. One show which has become a favourite is
"21st Precinct" but I am intrigued by the reference to "The Brass Ring"
