Subject: Who was that Injun-eer?

You've heard that everybody wants to get in on de act? Especially so when
there's cash involved?

Some inspired soul operating the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson
City, N. C., an exursion train running in the hilly far western extremities
of the Tar Heel state, was looking for a new way to capture the potential
audience this year. Letting his imagination run wild, he came up with "The
Lone Ranger Rides Again" excursion adventure.

For $49 adult ticket ($29 for ages 2-12) you get an 80-minute round-trip
ride with "America's Favorite Hero The Lone Ranger and His Faithful Indian
Companion Tonto [as they] Save the Day!" According to the attraction's
publicity mills, it's "An exciting event with cowboys, horses, a train
robbery, western themed activities & live musical entertainment at the
depot."

Heigh-yo! The great iron horse rides again! Gettum up, Scout!

Is this kind of activity in borrowing OTR series past unusual? And does
whoever owns the copyright get a cut? Do you ever get the feeling the more
things change, the more they stay the same? Eventually the pendulum swings
back and we exhibit a penchant for returning to our roots.

A friend and I were talking about the famous "War of the Worlds"
broadcast whose anniversary is the end of this month. He said that
he wished Orson Welles had issued an apology/explanation after it
had aired. I told him that I thought he'd done so shortly (a few days)
later. He disagrees.

So who's right? I've been under the impression he apologized for
all of the commotion it caused.

       Please help.

As always,

Kenneth

Subject: Me and Orson Welles

For anyone who is not aware of it, a new movie comes out in theaters soon
titled ME AND ORSON WELLES. A link is provided for anyone wanting to see the
trailer, which features a glimpse of Orson Welles and the radio cast
performing in front of the CBS radio microphone so it appears they are
re-creating at least one radio broadcast. Theater goers might want to visit
the theater this fall to buy a ticket. Remember, Hollywood only takes notice
by the box office dollars, not critical reviews. Buying a ticket for this one
might send a message. Not that they don't produce a number of period pieces,
but films depicting old-time radio don't come by often.
