Subject: RE: Fibber's closet
Ted said:
I hope I'm not dreaming. I recall several years back seeing a list on a
website of the things the NBC sound effects department used in making
Fibber's closet. I also thought I read that they were quite fussy about
what they used.
I can't remember what video I saw this on as it was some time ago, but it
was about radio sound effects and it showed the sound effects man doing
Fibber's closet. He had an assortment of pots, pans, and other items stacked
on the steps of a ladder that looked to be about six feet tall. When the cue
came for Fibber to open the closet, the sound guy started knocking stuff off
the ladder, kicking them around a bit, saving one item for the final item
that always hit the floor after a short pause. Seeing the guy do this was
more funny than hearing the closet.

Subject: On stage everyone!
Talking about that performance of South Pacific on stage holding
scripts, it reminded me that in the early
1950s, while radio was still alive, there was a complete presentation
of DON JUAN IN HELL, from G. B. Shaw's
Man and Superman. This was presented in Los Angeles at the LA
Philharmonic Auditorium (torn down a long
time ago). What made this presentation different was the entire play
was READ off of scripts. Just like a radio play.
The man who put this play on as a spoken radio presentation was
Charles Laughton. That presentation is etched
in my memory. Just look at who performed on stage reading their
scripts from their lecterns: CHARLES LAUGHTON,
CHARLES BOYER, DAME JUDITH ANDERSON AND TYRONE POWER.
What a great radio presentation that would have made. To my
knowledge, sadly, no recordings were made of that presentation. It
lasted for
many weeks as a special event. What a cast, and what performances.

Subject: TV to Radio - Three, Maybe More?
Hi Gang -
Reading past issues of the digest, I learned in issue 339 (available from the archives)
in a posting by Joe Mackey, that "My Little Margie" debuted on radio in December
of 1952. 'Margie' started on TV in June of that same year.
This means that there are at least THREE radio programs that started on TV and then
went to radio. Just backwards of many programs that went from Radio to TV. Previously
I thought there were only two. There may be more - anybody aware of any besides:
HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL; TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET; and MY LITTLE MARGIE
Happy Taping - Ken Piletic - Streamwood, Illinois (and Alma, Arkansas in
the winter)

I just read on Mark Evanier's pop-culture blog [removed]
about the recent death at age 97 of cartoon voiceman Sid Raymond, who gave
voices to Baby Huey, Katnip the cat, and other characters--usually dumb guy
voices--for the NYC-based Paramount/Famous cartoon studio in the 1940s and
1950s. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I had read somewhere that there were
occasions where he subbed for Charlie Cantor as the voice of Clifton Finnegan
on "Duffy's Tavern." Could somebody set this straight?
If so, it's ironic that he died so close to Cantor's daughter Marla Cantor
Schlossberg. I liked her. It was always fun seeing her at FOTR conventions.
Greetings from "where the elite meet to ether."

Subject: Hearing Loss
In a recent Digest, David Rogers asked, "Is anyone else going a little bit
deaf?"
According to the Mayo Clinic (and a bunch of other health research
institutions) the answer is "Yes!"
Like David, I also listen to my OTR on headphones. I like it because it adds
to the feeling of the program (especially mysteries) being plugged directly
in to your brain (read: imagination). Check out the attached link from the
Mayo Clinic that talks about this issue and recommends a few ways to
safeguard your hearing:

Subject: Re: Old records with radio shows on them?
I've recently come across a box of old records that appear to be radio related.
One in front of me now is called "The Record Disc. 395 Broadway NY". Then hand written on the
label it says "Bing Crosby Barry Fitzgerald" Then there is a line labled "Title" and hand written
next to this it says "Welcome Stranger". Below that is a line labled "Recorder" and after that it
is hand written "Screen Guild". Below that it says it was recorded on 10/14/48 at 33 and a third.
Anyone know what this is. There are a lot of these types of records in the box.
