[removed] was it America After Dark, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson?!
The complete sequence is: Tonight Show with Steve Allen until January 1957,
then "Tonight: America After Dark" for six months, then Jack Paar until
Spring 1962, then Johnny Carson in October with several guest hosts filling
in the months between.
Two questions. First, for anybody: does anyone have a tape recording of the
first "Tonight: America After Dark" show? I'm specifically interested in
hearing Paul Coates' (or Vernon Scott's) interview with Dean Martin where, in
one of the very few times Martin was genuinely under the influence, he ripped
Jerry Lewis apart in a verbal blast. Please contact me off-list if so.
Second question is for Bill "Udmacon" Knowlton or anyone who might know: Back
in the eighties when Nostalgia Merchant released the 1940 film "Grand Ole
Opry" on VHS, it was from a print that didn't include Uncle Dave Macon's
performance. Did the unedited film ever get a video release; if so, when and
from what company?
Thanks,
Michael

well, i'm both more confused and less confused now,
thanks to the recent postings on the meaning of the
abbreviation TL. everyone had a different answer, but
that's better than before when i had no idea at all
what it meant. . . thanks to all for the responses,

Subject: "Candy Matson"
I was just wondering about the "Candy Matson"
radio series starring Natalie Masters. Was there
ever a movie or TV version of it? Many other radio
programs crossed over to movies ("Dr. Kildare", "Dragnet",
"Ellery Queen", "The Thin Man", and "Our Miss Brooks",
among many others).
For some reason, listening to it stirred memories
of something similar in movies or on early TV. BTW,
did the radio series last very long? I enjoy listening
to the tapes I have of it.
Another OTR fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Subject: ILAM comic book
Hi folks.
As Bill Sherer asked, "where is the I Love A Mystery comic book that
Moonstone Press said would be out in August, 2004"? I want to know also!
I've looked in my local comics stores (full of Marvel-heads & card
collectors) and the kids working the counter don't know what I'm talking
about.
Anthony Tollin, do you know? How about you, Jim Harmon? Anybody seen the
comic?
Am I gonna have to create my own version (like I did with "Space Patrol")?
Just asking,
Bobb

me correctly, J A C K B E N N Y !!!! If you don't beleive me, go out
and find a $[removed] bill and try it.
Well, there was a TV episode in which Don Wilson was Ben Franklin. Jack was
Alexander
Hamilton (and I think Dennis Day was Aaron Burr).

Subject: Archie Publicity
My good buddy Lawrence Albert (AKA) Larry the Liberal, just posted,
I just received my latest CDs from the "World's Greatest Old Time Radio"
company and one of the discs was episodes from the "Archie" series. On the
back of the cover envelope was a picture of the cast at a party of some sort
Hmmmm???? Curiouser and curioser!
I'd love to see the picture you're referencing Larry. Any way you can e-mail
or fax me a copy.
The only "cast party" photos that I'm aware of are in my personal
possession, and I included them in my book. Also, I'm curious which episodes
are included on the CD.
I raise these questions again because of my contractual agreement with NBC
which prohibits use of recorded Archie programs for ANYTHING other than
"Sales Promotion". [removed] THAT DOES NOT MEAN SALES PROMOTION OF THESE
RECORDED EPISODES THAT ARE CURRENTLY BEING SOLD, BUT SALES PROMOTION BY THE
NBC SALES STAFF TO PROSPECTIVE PROGRAM CLIENTS (ADVERTISERS) WAY BACK WHEN
THE SHOW WAS AIRED "LIVE". Who is behind "Worlds Greatest Old Time Radio?
Of course our old buddy Hal Stone was prominently featured.
Was I in profile. Are you referring to my nose? :)
My question for Hal and any others is this, how often were the actors asked
or
told to make themselves available for PR shots during the course of a season?
If memory serves me, Larry (and it's been less and less obliging lately),
there was no set schedule. Over the ten year life of the show, we maybe had
5 or 6 publicity photo shoots, and most of them were in the first few years
of the programs existence. Originally, the first year, I was asked to assume
lots of poses wearing a "jughead" beanie, and looking kind of stupid. (No
comments, Charlie.) They used those pics for many years. Then, some years
later, we did some shots with "Archie, Jug, Betty and Veronica". There also
was one big scheduled photo "story" shoot for a magazine, and featured Perry
Como with Bobby. There was a separate shoot one year with the two girls. The
"Party" photo that you refer to (if it's the picture in my possession) was
to celebrate our one year anniversary being on the air for Swift meat
company.
Incidentally, since you brought it [removed]:) All the pictures I mentioned
above, along with tons of others (well over 200 photographs and
illustrations from that period) are included in my [removed]
"Aw!! Relax [removed]".

I hasten to add. Larry's question to me in the Digest was not a set up for a
sales pitch. honest? But my mother didn't raise a dummy, so I took the
opportunity to squeeze in a mention of this 336 page literary masterpiece.
Particularly since I have some copies left. Also, I noticed we have quite a
few Newbie Digest subscribers, so I thought mentioning the book "cuddent
hoit" as we say in New York.
