Subject: Toscanini BBC2/Home Service Broadcasts
Good news and bad news on the Toscanini 1952 Brahms performances
with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
The good news is that Testament (SBT 3167), a UK company, has
released an officially sanctioned (by EMI) three CD set in genuine
monophonic sound. The set includes all four symphonies and both the Tragic
Overture and the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, one or both of which was
omitted from the bootlegs I've run across. Brief, but excellent, notes by
Alan Sanders accompany the set. And, the music is glorious. Simply
glorious.
The bad news is that unlike the bootlegs that have circulated for
these many years, the Testament CDs omit the BBC announcer's introductions
and brief commentaries. But, what a treasure these two broadcasts are!

Can anyone tell me from what studio's the soap "Our Gal Sunday" was
broadcast? New York, Chicago, Los Angeles? I'd e-mail Jim Cox personally,
but I've lost his address.

Subject: Big Land "Deal"
The property in question was offered on "Challenge of the Yukon" aka "Sgt
Preston of the Yukon" and of course his lead dog King!
Somewhere I have one of those deeds. I've been told the land went through
"abandonment" or something like that so I guess we can't all get together
and build "our"cabin up in the Yukon Territory.

Subject: seeking Hometown Frolic fans
My name is Don Larkin who was a DJ on WAAT, Newark, NJ from 1945 to
1961. Perhaps I am in the wrong ballpark when seeking former listeners
to a little C & W radio station which covered a small area of the East
Coast in the vicinity of New York and New Jersey. My main desire is to
seek anyone who may have a copy of one of my Broadcasts during these
years. If I am totally in the wrong pew, please someone advise me and I
will humbly apologize, bow my head and disappear. Thank you to anyone
who may reply to this request and direct me to the correct method of
using your radio net to which I have belonged for only one week or so.
I can understand any readers of this message for thinking I have
flipped. My dear wife frequently reminds me that I am beyond help.
Thank you again for the [removed] any.

Subject: What radio series was it?
On every broadcast of a certain radio series running for a time during the
period 1948--1953, a few lines of a humorous duet were sung, I believe, by
the show's host and hostess, possibly to introduce either the show or a part
of the show featuring some competition.
The song was "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)" from Irving Berlin's
"Annie Get Your Gun" ('46).
The program might have been "Fun For All", hosted by Bill Cullen and
Arlene Francis (1952-53) -- I'm not sure. (By the way, does anyone remember
that series?)
Would anyone know what program used that duet "Anything You Can Do"....?
Thanks.

In 1943 Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy did a pilot episode for a NBC radio

Subject: 1" land from Quaker Oats
I never knew that Quaker actually did this, but it reminded me of a 1955
or 1956 Uncle Scrooge comic book where Uncle Scrooge recieves 1 square
inch of land in Panhandle country in his Cannie Brannies. Then they try
to corner the market by getting every inch for miles and miles. Makes me
wonder if any kids had aspirations of building up a couple acres of land

Stephen Kallis writes:
Anent the restoration of Old Radios, some years ago, some companies
manufactured ersatz Old Radios.Ý These were table-model cathedral types,
but their interiors were solid-state electronics, and on the side of some
were doors for built-in cassette drives.Ý One could pop an OTR tape into
one of these and get a sense of going back to those thrilling days of
yesterday for the express purpose of listening to an OTR program or
programs.
About 4 years ago I was in Sam's Club and saw several copies of Old Type
Radios. They were AM/FM/cassette, made of solid wood, instead of pressed
sawdust-beautiful copies. I bought one for my father and after looking it
over closely went back and got one for myself. The one I kept has a small
brass plaque on the front that says THOMAS collectors edition. It works
fine and looks great. I will never understand how they can make something
like this, ship it all the way from China to Alaska and sell it for

Subject: Helen King
I am trying to locate copies of any programing with Helen King. She
produced women's programs on the Blue Network from Buffalo, NY in the 40s
and was on WOR in the early 30s doing a program on handwriting
analysis/graphology. She wrote a book about what people's doodles revealed
about their character.
I see a Helen King listed in Dunning on pages 158 and 159 regarding the soap
opera, Clara, Lu, and Em - but I don't know if this is the same person.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

episodes are in a story? I have the final 4 episodes of Colonal

would like to trade, please e-mail me.
Thanks!,
