Subject: William Safire: The OTR connection

The rapier-witted conservative columnist for the NY Times, William
Safire, died Sept. 27th at the age of 79. The press will recall him
as the Nixon speech-writer, an overseas correspondent, a Pulitzer
Prize winner, the photographer of the Nixon-Khrushchev "kitchen
debate," an author of four novels, and the erudite writer of
countless articles for five decades.

What they might miss is his OTR [removed]

While still a teen-ager, he was a researcher for NY Herald Tribune
columnist, Tex McCrary. Next he was an overseas correspondent for
WNBC radio in Europe and the Middle East in the 40s. In the 50s, he
rejoined McCrary and wife, Jinx Falkenburg, as the producer of their
radio show, "Tex & Jinx" on NBC. Safire went on to also produce their
television series.

Safire was born William L Safir (he added the "e" later) in New York
City on Dec. 17. 1929. Survivors include Helene, his wife of 47
years, son Mark, daughter Annabelle, and one grandchild.
