Arthur Anderson had a stroke a few days ago and is recovering at New
York University Medical Center. The staff there believes that his
recovery has been excellent, although they would like him to remain
in their care for at least through the weekend. (Arthur does not
concur, so we shall [removed])

The only faculty affected by the stroke initially was his speech, and
as of today, his speech has returned to virtual normalcy. He has had
occasional visitors, including Craig Wichman, and Alice has been on
the telephone with Edgar Farr Russell III, who is enroute to
Manhattan. Arthur stressed to Craig that he specifically does not
want flowers, fruit baskets, etc. from well-wishers as that would
complicate things for Alice.

Craig points out that "Of course, prayers are free and amazing gifts."

We will try to keep you advised on this situation.

Subject: First Episode of Ma Perkins?

On the website [removed] under the category "soap
opera" (scroll down the right-hand side of the page to find the category) is
an episode of Ma Perkins in which the announcer makes an interesting
statement. He says "And so we meet her for the first time. Ma Perkins, in
person." The characters and setting are introduced with a degree of detail
that seems to assume no familiarity with the show on the part of listeners.
No date, commercials, or station or network identification is included.

In an accompanying article Randy indicates that the show is from a
transcription disc labeled "Pgm #423" and speculates that it may have aired
over a Canadian station. He also provides a link to [removed]
where the episode is listed with an "approximate" date of August 1935.

Given the announcer's statement, I'm wondering whether this episode may indeed
have been the first one of the series. As a transcription, could it have been
re-broadcast over (perhaps) a Canadian station in 1935 and presented as the
first episode of the series although it had been aired earlier in the United
States?

The final episode of the series has been widely circulated. Is it possible
that we now have the first one as well?

Subject: Green Hornet errors

Actually, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY is not the only one making mistakes. Seth
Rogen himself, in the movie trailer for THE GREEN HORNET, is referring
to himself and Kato as "superheroes." Actually, they should be "masked
vigilantes" because there is a BIG difference between the two. Superman and
Wonder Woman
are both superheroes -- possession super human abilities like speed and
strength -- even having to blend in as an average human by
disguising themselves. Whereas Batman and The Green Hornet are masked
vigilantes. Nothing super about them except that they hide behind a mask and
use gadgets to aid them in their crusade against crime. (Of course, anyone
who read WATCHMEN understands the clarity
pointed out with the difference of a masked vigilante and a
"superhero.") Talk about Rogen's big [removed]

Of course, I've seen that kind of mistake on a lot of commercial packaging,
and comic book fans snicker and giggle over the error.

Incidentally, Ronald Ahrens of the New York Times got it correct when
referring to the Green Hornet's origin as a radio program prior to the comic
book, serial and Tv version. Link enclosed.

Off the side, I came into possession of the MacGregor and Sollie collection a
couple months ago -- a private collection, over 20 boxes of materials. The
transcription company located in San Francisco kept meticulous records of
recordings, masters, casts, titles, plots, script writers, directors, cost
sheets, etc. Had I not come down with pneumonia over the holiday, they would
have been delivered and returned to the collector a short while ago. Among
the amusing tid-bits discovered was the reference to Doc Savage (on the radio
program DOC SAVAGE and DOC SAVAGE CALLING) as a "superhero" in more than one
inter-office memo/letter. Even though Superman debuted a few years later, it
seems the term was loosely used to describe radio characters as early as 1935.

Subject: Quiz Kids: Quite Legit

Dan Hughes cannot believe that the Quiz Kids were that knowledgeable
and wants to know if the show may have been "fixed" by feeding the
kids the questions and/or answers beforehand.

Briefly, yes, they were that knowledgeable.

No, the show was not fixed.

No, the kids never got the questions or answers in advance.

But Dan's suspicions are not new. From the debut of the show, many
folks had such reservations, including the media. "Billboard" said
"We should imagine that the kids had stolen a peek at the puzzlers."
Some newspapers hinted all the kids were college-trained midgets.
Norman Siegel, radio editor for the "Cleveland Press" was more
specific and claimed the show was rehearsed. Louis G. Cowan, who
created and produced the show, phoned Siegel and invited him to come
to Chicago at Cowan's expense and do a complete investigation. Siegel
accepted and spent three days, interviewing the staff, the kids,
their parents, and the radio crew. "It's on the level" Siegel wrote
later, "The answers come straight off the cuff."

The kids were darn smart; some were child prodigies who later had a
hard time adjusting to life as adults. Hundreds of intelligent
youngsters were auditioned for every vacancy so there was no chance
of a let-down. Most of those chosen had IQs in the range of 180-200.
The records have long ago been lost but to total up every kid who
qualified for the panel, whether for one show or several years (all
were retired at age 16) would be approximately 600. However since
most of them lasted many years, they became very familiar names in
our popular culture: Joel Kupperman, Gerald Darrow, Harve Bennett
Fischman and Ruthie Duskin. A few others were not on long enough to
become well-known but as adults, made their mark; one of them was
actress
Vanessa Brown, who was on the panel under her birth name, Smylla Brind.

Occasionally the questions would be chosen because they were in a
field in which a kid was an expert. Ruthie knew everything about
Shakespeare, Joel Kupperman was a math whiz, and Gerard Darrow's
specialty was ornithology. Remember: only one kid on the panel had to
get the right answer. But did they ever get the questions in advance?
Nope!

For more info on this remarkable program, I recommend not Wikipedia,
but two books. "The Quiz Kids" by Eliza Merrill Hickok (Houghton
Mifflin, 1947) tells the story of the show from its inception by the
leading staffer on the program. "Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids:
Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted" by Ruth Duskin Feldman
(Chicago Review Press, 1982) was written by one of the original Quiz
Kids who located and interviewed several of her fellow panelists
after they grew up.
