Subject: "... and the Crowd Goes Wild!"

I was listening to a 1938 episode of the Jack Benny
program the other day. I think it was the episode that
dates to February 13, 1938 - to be exact. Robert
Taylor was guest starring and giving Jack tips on
delivering a particular scene for his new film (Jack's
new film). Mary has been running lines with Jack and
is only too happy to do the same with Robert Taylor.
She keeps inserting the phrase "Kiss me, Adrian!" into
the script once Robert's playing her leading man. At
some point, he grabs her and --- judging from the
sound of the audience reaction and Jack's own response
--- kisses her passionately!

I love hearing moments like these. And hate them all
at the same time, because I wish so badly I could be
there in the audience seeing whatever it is on stage
that everybody's reacting so wildly to.

What are your favorite wild audience reaction moments
in the land of OTR?

Bethany

Subject: The Hermit of Atabapo

I was going to post it, but Ken Greenwald did it already and he is correct.
The original master of THE HERMIT OF ATABAPO is in bad condition. You won't
find as great copy anywhere. It's one of those situations where "something
is better than nothing." Even with all the software people have on
computers, people can only clean up the sound quality to a certain level and
I believe the best that could be done has been. Former OTR collector Gordon
Payton had a copy from the original source once, and used to make a copy on
audio cassettes, but then had a friend digitally remove a lot of the pops
and cracks and such and was, for a while, offering the best sound quality
for that serial and to date on CD, but it's never been improved from what
Gordon was offering. And even that was not great sound quality. Best you
can do is contact Gordon and see if he'd be willing to make copies of the
audio CDs in his collection but since he's been out of the hobby for some
time, I don't think that's possible with his schedule nowadays.
Avoid the MP3 files - those only make the sound quality worse and have never
been equal to what Gordon was offering.

Jim Beckerman's great article about how George Lefferts started modern, adult broadcast science fiction entertainment with Dimension X and X Minus One is featured in today's edition of The Record (Hackensack, NJ). The article also provides details on the Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, this Thursday - Sunday at the Holiday Inn North in Newark, [removed] ([removed]).

It's a true shame that co-creator Ernest Kinoy couldn't also be with us this year for a salute to these great programs. He wanted to come but his health failed him around August and he had to back out.

If you can get the print edition of the newspaper, there is a great new photo of Lefferts in his study with three Emmy Awards.

You can read the article here:

The large Saturday crossword puzzle in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel of
October 13 contained the following clue for a five-letter word: "Lum's radio
partner". Wonder how many people were stumped by that one.

  Mike Leannah
