Hi Everybody,
when I read Cad post about Skitch Henderson it reminder me that in `1942
Skitch use to date Shirley Mitchell. In fact Shirley had two famous room
mates at that time Dinah Shore, and Kitty Kallen. Take care,

Subject: Internet Movie/Radio Database
Here was my final, futile argument to the Internet Movie Database in my
doomed attempt to get the IMDb to add radio pages:
... before I let go of this, I just want to cite a few examples of
interest:
Cecil B. DeMille: The reason he was known to the public as a Hollywood
showman was because he appeared on screen in prologues and short films
-- but mainly because he was heard weekly as the host of LUX RADIO
THEATRE for nine years.
Susannah York: She was incorrectly listed on the IMDb as an actress in
Dennis Potter's TENDER IS THE NIGHT, and it took me extensive research
(including screening the entire miniseries) to establish that she was
not in the cast. The error evidently came from the fact that she was the
reader on a TENDER IS THE NIGHT audiocassette. Perhaps this error would
never have been made if there were a form for entering audio materials.
Vanessa Brown: She rose to fame on the QUIZ KIDS radio program but not
the QUIZ KIDS on TV. So she can't be linked to the series that made her
famous.
Fred Allen: A major talent of the 20th Century, but his
Broadway/movie/TV credits are minor compared to the impact he had on
radio over two decades.
Some movies, such as NATIONAL BARN DANCE (1943) and SORRY WRONG NUMBER
(1948), were only made because of popular success on radio, and any
information on these films (on the IMDb or elsewhere) falls short
without detailed information on the audio origins.
Radio comedy-drama reigned for three decades in the USA and continued as
a force in the UK even as it diminished in America. Historically, it's
as important as film. There are so many linkages between radio, TV and
film that the borderlines between what is seen and what is heard is

For radio listeners in the greater Boston/New Hampshire area, Marc Lemay,
afternoon host of radio station WCCM 1490-AM in Haverhill is going to
interview 2004 Friends of Old Time Radio guest and former Lone Ranger
announcer Fred Foy live via telephone at 4:00 [removed] EST on Friday September 10.
They don't stream their signal, so this one is going to be limited to local
folks.

Anybody know anything about Bromley House, a baritone who sang on some
transcriptions circa 1936+. I am particularly interested in a Chevrolet
Musical Moments transcription, probably from World Broadcasting System, on
which he appeared with Victor Arden's orchestra and Annette Hanshaw, probably
broadcast over WOR in early 1938.

I want to bring this information to the list members: There's to be a very
special show to honor 9/11 at -- [removed] on September
11th produced by Sandy Singer.
Gordon Jenkins tells how he came to write Manhattan Tower in 1945 -- we
play original, with Elliot Lewis, Beverly Jenkins, etc., followed by an
original Gordy wrote for Robert Goulet, in 1965, Man From Manhattan,
which included all the new songs Gordy wrote for the 1956 television
special of Manhattan Tower, followed by Goulet's recording of the
original work. Kate Smith closes the show, with a rousing version of,
God Bless America.

I don't recall what happened, but, Fibber had made a comment,
obviously wrong, and Molly said, I have a TL for you deary. What does TL
mean? I have wracked my brain trying to come up with an
answer that makes sense, but have drawn a blank every time.
i've been meaning to post a question about this to the
list for a long time, and have never remembered to. .
. this was some sort of a favorite expression for
george burns-- he used it time and time again, from
their earliest radio days through the TV show, and
i've also wracked my brain to no avail trying to
figure out what it means. anyone?

I believe SH was the Tonight Show bandleader thru the first couple of years
of the Carson era, until 1965 or so (my personal memories of the Tonight
Show go back only to the early 70s). Also, Doc Severenson was a member of
the band going back to the Steve Allen era, being chosen as leader when SH
left.

Kathryn Grayson would like to have a good sounding copy of this radio show.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
The query and responses about pianist and conductor Skitch Henderson
told of his long career, but even the biographical sketch in the link
[removed] fails to mention one important
chapter in his radio work.
In 1950, Skitch took over the morning drive shift on WNBC in New
York from "Buffalo Bob" Smith, who left to concentrate on "Howdy
Doody". Skitch's easy style, his soft British-accented voice and his
keyboard skills (which were sometimes tested by live radio at that early
hour -- you could hear a little mistake now and then) were very popular
among awakening New Yorkers. He also played records and read the
commercials and checked the weather, all the usual morning [removed]
activity. Skitch was married at the time to the glamorous TV star Faye
Emerson -- she of the "plunging neckline"-- who would drop by now and
then. I'm not sure if, like Bob Smith or Tex and Jinx (who followed at
8:30 AM) he originated the program from his home.
But Skitch was always a serious musician. One morning he played a
new tune by the Ames Brothers called "Ragmop" ("M I say mo Mop Mopp Mop
Mopp Mop, mop, mop, mop R I say ra Rag Ragg Rag r-a-g-g-m-o-p-p Rag mop
Doo doo doo dah dee ah [removed]). He stopped the record half way through,
grumbling, "That song is so bad, I'm not going to play it until it
becomes #1 on the hit parade." Three weeks later he had to play it again.
Skitch was later replaced in that WNBC time slot by the great Bob &
Ray, and he's been making music ever since.
