I'd like to add the names of some other New York-based actors
who appeared on (Theater Five) ... What do all these folks have in common?
They've all been
invited guests at FOTR conventions in New Jersey at one time or another

Well, You Little Old Seminar Maker, you - any chance they could come again,
and discuss that gig officially? I speak, of course, as someone not - (ahem)
- uninterested in "After-OTR Drama."

In fact, if Charlie will allow me to get tangential for one second, I'd like
to invite the kind folks here to contact me off-list, if they'd like to see
an Independent Film that I acted in recently that involved the services of
several members of Quicksilver Radio Theater.

Best,

Could you explain what you mean by this?

Subject: Cincy Convention

I plan on being in Cincinnati this year and have been to at least 3 out of the
last 4 conventions. Prior to that I did not know about it. If you are outside
the OTR network you never hear about it, and I always assumed that was the way
the two Bobs wanted it. Not too big.
The hotel is nice and well located, easy to find and free parking. Plenty of
entertainment and eating options for spouses or relatives that do not like OTR
that much. So you can bring the whole family and they can go shopping or site
seeing while you are at the convention. The dinner is good and reasonably
priced.
However I do know at least two folks that cannot go this year because of the
dates selected, and previous commitments. I realize this may have been on
purpose but I have the flyers for the last 4 years and the convention keeps
slipping back further in April:

2003 April 11 and 12th (2nd weekend of the month)
2004 April 16 and 17th (3rd weekend of the month)
2005 April 15 and 16th (3rd weekend of month)
2006 April 21 and 22nd instead of 14th and 15th which is Easter weekend.

I do not know what weekend it was held on prior to 2003 but this maybe a factor
for some folks.

See you in Cincy!

Subject: Lone Ranger questions

Bethany Rutledge asked a few questions relating to the Earle Graser Lone
Ranger programs from the 1938-39 era in a recent posting. As has been
mentioned here before, Tonto's horse White Feller was phased out when the
first Republic serial hit the theaters in mid-1938 and fans could clearly
see that Tonto (Chief Thundercloud, the actor) rode a paint. Tonto's new
horse was named "Scout" in Program 87, 8/5/38.
As for Bolivar and Hacksaw, those two rascals were featured in four early
episodes, but do not reappear. Instead, Fran Striker gives us Pete Lacey
and Pedro Martinez, two down-on-their-luck cowboys who also get into a
series of misadventures. These two last long enough to get into a TV
episode.
As for the Ranger's disguises, Striker got more sophisticated as the years
rolled on. Early disguises were not described in any detail. One can
imagine a fake mustache, perhaps, or dark pigment applied to the face to
make the Ranger look more weather-beaten. In one 8-part series in
June-July, 1939, Tonto disguises his masked friend so perfectly that he
passes for "Wild Bill Riley", a famous stage driver, so that Earle Graser
can take his annual two-week vacation. Jay Michael doubles as the Lone
Ranger and actually gets to holler "Hi Yo Silver" once. Presumably, George
W. Trendle hear him and put a stop to it at once!
Chief Thundercloud (a coincidence of names with the actor in the serial) was
a recurring character throughout the entire run of programs. He was
supposedly Tonto's tribal chief, and he helps the masked man and his
companion out of many scrapes. His tribe must have been nomadic, because he
appears all over the west at various times.
Bethany has much to look forward to for many, many programs to come in the
series.

Can anyone help?

Found a reference to you and old time radio and was wondering if you might
help me with an episode title from long ago. I heard a radio program in the
1960's (perhaps a 'Suspense' episode or some other like mystery show) but I
can't
remember the episode title. Here's a synopsis of the episode:

Hours after sending her boyfriend in search of gasoline, a girl is rescued
from her stranded car by police. Though cautioned not to turn around, she
does .
. . and sees her boyfriend's lifeless body hanging from a tree branch above
the car.

Any help locating this title or any versions/variation in titles is
appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: the hobby

Hi Everybody,

reading both Martin and Jim observation on the health of the hobby has
inspirer me to add my thaughts. I would add to the list the lending library
of OTR clubs to the list. This is a very good way to obtain materials at a
very low cost for the fan. I believe this is a very important year for all
the convention. Many will base there future convention on this year turn
out. If we lose a few more after this year. I think it would be a good
idea that some of the major OTR clubs combined there resources in helping to
put on two convention a year. One for the East coast, and one for the West
coast. Some of the clubs have strong volunteers, but do not have a large
treasury, while other OTR clubs are short in volunteers but are in very good
financial shape. If the OTR clubs would support a joint effort we could
keep the convention around for more years. I would be happy to get involve
in this kind of movement. Take care,

Walden

it's hard to believe that nobody else--as far as I know--attempted to
replicate this concept over the past 60 + years. Does anybody know of any
other similarly preserved broadcast days?

Other than the CBS/NBC D-Day broadcasts? I'm told there is an entire day of
broadcasting from a San Diego TV station preserved from 1978--it was brought
to my attention because there was a daytime "Hollywood Squares" preserved as a
result. And didn't someone on this list mention something about a 1950s day
being preserved, or at least a CBS network feed day?

I'd love to find out that someone preserved an entire 1950s day, sign-on to
sign-off, in either radio or TV. Perhaps even more tedious than the 1939 or
D-Day recordings but I'd still listen.

Subject: series badly in need of sound upgrade/series
 that aren't so common anymore

Hi,

I'm extremely quality conscious, but some series are
just impossible to find in really nice sound. Most of
these are ones that were released in the 60s/early
70s. Some series are:

Blackstone, the Magic Detective
It's a Crime, Mr. Collins
Mystery is My Hobby (found a few decent sound ones,
not many)
Danger With Grainger (Aus series, the ones floating
around in the [removed] are in dreadful 42nd generation
sound)
That Strong Guy (DWG clone)
Mike Hammer

I'm sure there's more, but it's kind of frustrating.
I like Mystery is My Hobby.

ALso, there's series that were easier to find 15 years
ago than now, like Charlie Chans from 1936 (Landini
and misc. eps - very hard to find lo-gen).

Dear Folks;

Peace.

I am researching Roy J(udson) Snell, a prolific author of children and teen
series books from the early 20's until the end of the second world war. It
has been noted that he wrote some Jack Armstrong-The All American Boy radio
scripts as well as featured on a nationwide feature from the studios of WBBM
Chicago on March 29, 1938. The presentation was on a "Eddy Guest" program
sponsored by Household Finance Company. I would like to substantiate this
info and even locate a copy of the show. I am hopping that someone in the
"digest" could help.

Manituwah,

Bill

Hope to see many of you in Cincinnati in April. Straight Arrow is on the
way!!!
