Subject: How to record [removed]

I consider mywelf fortunate to have grown up in a time
where computers are now farily advanced. Now one can
do so many wonderful things with shows - within the
past 5 years, digital has become the predominant
medium of OTR (/wav/CD/mp3). With .wav (and CD after
ripping to .wav), one can make sure the time is
precise, down to the second - one can clean up the
show, if one knows how to do it right. Also, which
hasn't really come about except in the mp3 front -
digital allows an ease of trading which just wasn't
possible now. With broadband, one can now send an
uncompressed .wav to toe other person fairly quickly.
No more waiting on the mail -
Also, no loss of generation! I am very particular
about the masters that I get for my shows, and for
example, It's A Crime, Mr. Collins, only seems to be
available in 42nd generation - very frustrating! We
now have the technology where every show can be done
right. Shows should sound like the First Gen people's
(well, most of their sets at least), or Terry
Salomsonson's.
Digital is a wonderful medium, and it's my goal to
have every show be done right. For that reason, I've
written a short "How To Encode OTR" correctly guide.
It's mostly common sense, but it's gratis to anyone
who wants it. (it's a Word document that has
screenshots of how to do various aspects of
recording).

Subject: Re: Day the Earth Stood Still

I have a tape with a recording of The Day the Earth Stood Still. [...]
The tape I have is only 30-minutes. THere is no opening, closing or
commercials of any kind on my tape.

This is probably an edited version of Lux Radio Theater known as the
"Hollywood Radio Theater", which consisted solely of the actual Lux play,
with all extraneous segments and adverts deleted. This version was used for
AFR(T)S broadcasts.

This series should not be confused with the [removed] syndicated anthology of the
1940s of the same time, nor with the alternate title of Rod Serling's 1970s
SF anthology, Zero Hour.

WMUA. the student station at the University of Massachusetts, has

Hi all,

Going through some old Word documents, I found an old
document I had copied from an ebay auction in 2000 - a
whole bunch of Queen For A Day broadcasts. Did the
winner ever make them available, or have they
disappeared again?

At the risk of getting Mr. Lynes mad, having him put a bad word in the ear
of Ms. Watkins, & losing me my part in A DATE WITH JUDY this week in Newark

As a lover of Classic Radio AND Classic Film, I appreciate the distinction.
But - especially considering that late in OTR, some sfx were added in Post,
and some Practical sfx have always bee done "as it happens" in film
(especially, in the early days of Talkies) - the distinction is a fine one.

There's no shame in either term; sterling work has been done in both fields.

It's a bit like making a big distinction between "Cinematographer" and
"Videographer;" yes, there are differences. But there are even more
commonalities.

I have often thought about starting an OTR radio group here in NY that
would
include a live orchestra and S-FX rig ... Anyone have some experience in the
OTR community theater arena that would like to share some war stories?

Dear Step, & gang-

My group has been blessed with that honor.

In the OTR field, we did the Book Release Party for Howard Blue's "Words at
War," that included the 40's soap, "Hasten the Day." In the quasi-OTR field,
we did an OTR-style broadcast of "A Christmas Carol," for The Stafford (NJ)
Township Historical Society. Both had live piano scores by Kyler Brown - with
some vocal music by the cast of the "Carol."

As to MAD, we did two shows at the Mark Goodson Theater of the Museum of
TELEVISION and radio (as Max Schimd calls it!). There, we had instrumental
Quintets, and vocal soloists, for "The Speckled Band," and "Lincoln's Last
Day,"
in original scores written and conducted by Mark Hollmann (since, Tony Award
winner.)

There's no mystical secret to making all the pieces - Music, Dialogue, and
Sfx - fit together as seamlessy as you mention. Just common sense choices and
hard work:

-Pick good people
-Have PRE-production planning sessions
-Rehearse together
