A weekly [removed]

For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!

Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!

For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Re: Sibilants

Michael Biel wrote:

Once again I must dispel the myth that audio bandwidth was limited in the
40s, or the 30s for that matter. Western Electric Wide Range Vertical
Recording, used by World Broadcasting System among others, had a frequency
response beyond 13 KHz by 1933, the main trunks of network telephone lines
topped 10 KHz by the early 30s and were approaching 15 HKz in 1934, the
stations in the new expanded 1500-1600 KHz band were required to have
response exceeding 10 KHz in 1934, Armstrong's FM transmission had a 15 KHz
response in 1937, and some fancy radios made by companies like Scott could
take advantage of all this.

Now, my memory might be a bit faulty, but the FCC required an annual "Proof
of Performance" for all AM radio stations, and I did my share back in the
late 60s and early 70s. I seem to recall the requirement for a "flat" audio
frequency response between ~500 Hz and 7 KHZ, falling off rapidly after 7
KHz. If there were no such requirements in the 1920s - 1950s, Michael's
point might be valid.

Since AM was the standard for radio in the time period under discussion, it
seems obvious to me that no matter how good Western Electric equipment was,
the stations were required to roll off their response curve before the
bandwidth ran into the next channel.

In those days, Bandwidth meant the assigned frequency, +/- the frequency of
the audio signal width. It still does, as far as I know. Under those
circumstances I can't imagine how an AM station could have transmitted the
high audio frequencies occupied by sibilants.

Are there any videos/films of OTR shows as they were being broadcast?
Every now and then something pops up such as the youtube video of how the
sound
effects were done for the opening of Fibber McGee's closet but how about a
complete episode?

Subject: Sibilants

It is my understanding that when electrical recordings replaced acoustical,
circa 1923, the sound engineers utilizing the new technology were stunned to
hear perfectly-preserved sibilants which had come through very imperfectly
(at best) on previous recordings.

Subject: early sci-fi on radio

A few of you know I am doing research on Kansas City-area radio. One series
I've been focusing on the last few months was called Phenomenon: Electrifying
History and had a time traveling hero. Two questions for the group: 1) Were
there other OTR series that used a time travel storyline? I can't think of
any offhand. 2) What was the first known sci-fi series on radio? I read an
online reference to a 1930 series called Ultra Violet discovered by Anthony
Tollin. I do not have contact info for him to get more details of the series.
Phenomenon debuted on KMBC Nov. 9, 1931, then a new syndicated version was
released in 1937. It seems this may be one of the very early examples of a
sci-fi radio series (For those interested, I'll be presenting on this at the
Cincinnati convention in May). Thanks for any followup readers may provide.

Subject: What did she say?

I've listened to far more than 50 Fibber McGee and Molly shows, but I
don't consider myself an expert on the subject, so I will pose this
question to the digesters: What did Molly say after Fibber announced he
was going to look for something in the hall closet, but before things
started falling:

1) Oh heavenly days!
or
2) Don't open that door, McGee!
or
3) something else.

Now, remember I don't mean while things are falling, but just at the
point where Fibber would have his hand on the door knob.

Another question about the closet: Did Molly ever (or occasionally)
SUGGEST to Fibber that he might want to look for something in the hall
closet?

I await your answers.

Lengthy discussions of MP3 players should problably be taken to the blog
