Subject: Radio drama session at MLA in San Francisco?
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Greetings,
This may seem a bit off-topic, but I was wondering if there are any
academics on this list who might be interested in participating in a special session
on radio/audio drama and/or performance at the annual MLA convention in San
Francisco this December? I'm trying to put together a special session
proposal, but I need one more paper to fill it out. Email me privately if you might
be interested, please!
All best,

Unlurking for a query [removed]
I have a cassette of the Escape episode "Three Skeleton Key" that I play for
my high school students in our mass media history unit, but the cassette is
wearing out rapidly. Does anyone know exactly where I can buy a CD or .mp3
copy of the episode?
The one I want is the one with Elliott Reid and William Conrad -- NOT the one
with Vincent Price.
Thanks,

Hi
???? Does anyone have any information on the OTR show Music and the Muse. I
have several shows from 1949 and 1950. There is some poetry reading and some
light symphonic music for an overall charming show. I'd like to know how many
shows exist and who was involved in producing the show and for what network.
Thank you
Frank Thomas

There is an archive at Ithaca College Library in NY that I need some info
from, and my schedule is preventing me any free time to go up there and look.
If anyone in or near Ithaca wants to make some extra money, I'll reimburse and
pay them for their time and trouble. it is not a big task, and I can mail
papers to them to work from.
Drop me a line privately and we'll chat.

Ted at radioaz@[removed] asked:
Does anyone know if the "guests" on Anthony's advice show were real, or
actors hired to represent the people who wrote in to the show?
Dunno.
However, the final gag of the Warner Bros. Daffy Duck/Porky Pig cartoon "Baby
Bottleneck" involves a character calling John J. Anthony's radio show
lamenting "Mr. Anthony, I have a [removed]" Said cartoon also has
references to Bing Crosby, Eddie Cantor, the Dionne Quintuplets, and another
character modeled on Phil Harris.

Although I'm admittedly not much of an authority on classical music composers,
I did enjoy Larry Moore's recent posting here about [removed] reminds
[removed] couple of years ago, I was recording with CBSRMT stock player Gordon
Gould a rather dense and comprehensive biography of Beethoven for Talking
Books. 'T'was a re-record of a standard two-volume biography by Thayer (first
name escapes me).
Thayer writes that Beethoven had a colleague and contemporary named Schindler,
also a composer, who wrote a quickie biography about his friend Ludwig
shortly after Beethoven's death. WARNING: one reading this will undoubtedly
see the punchline coming.
My response: "Well, I've never read Schindler's Beethoven, but I have read
Schindler's Liszt."
That's about the size of it.

From Those Were The Days --
3/2
1945 - Mystery fans remember this day when they gathered around the
radio set to listen to the Mutual Broadcasting System as Superman
encountered Batman and Robin for the first time.
1952 - Whispering Streets debuted on ABC, remaining on the air until 1960.
3/4
1877 -- Emile Berliner came up with a thing called the microphone.
1925 - Calvin Coolidge took the oath of office in Washington DC. The
presidential inauguration was broadcast on radio for the very first time.
1930 - 'The Redhead', Red Barber, began his radio career this day.
Barber broadcast on WRUF at the University of Florida in Gainsville. He
soon became one of the best known sports voices in America.
1942 - Shirley Temple had a starring role in Junior Miss on CBS. The
show, heard for the first time, cost $12,000 a week to produce and
stayed on the airwaves until 1954.
1951 - Sir John Gielgud, starring as Hamlet, was heard on The [removed] Steel
Hour on the NBC.
1952 - President Harry Truman dedicated the Courier, the first seagoing
radio broadcasting station, in ceremonies in Washington, DC.
3/6
1948 - Ralph Edwards created a quiz on Truth or Consequences called The
Walking Man. After ten weeks of guesses by contestants playing the game,
it was finally revealed that Jack Benny was The Walking Man.
3/7
1933 - CBS debuted Marie the Little French Princess which had a run of
two years.
1944 - Norman Corwin hosted a program titled, Columbia Presents Corwin
on the CBS network this day.
3/8
1925 - Bernard McFadden was a physical culturist who had a radio show in
New York City. But not for long. McFadden failed to show up for his
daily morning program, causing a young, studio engineer, John Gambling,
to ad-lib on the air for a solid hour. As a result, the station (WOR)
decided to give Gambling the morning announcer's job. John Gambling
stayed at WOR for many years, then turned the mike over to his son, who,
finally, turned the program over to his son ... all named John. Mr.
Gambling's Rambling with Gambling program attracted tri-state (New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut) audiences in record numbers for over 70 years
on the 50,000 watt talk-radio powerhouse at 710 AM on your radio dial
from New York each morning.

Description
A long-time broadcaster, John Rayburn has covered major news and sporting
events for more than 60 years on popular radio and television programs. Having
been in the business for nearly two-thirds of official broadcasting history,
Rayburn relies on his extensive experience to give this unique, first-hand
account of several historic events and developments in broadcasting history.
The story begins in the early days of radio, when most listeners relied on a
primitive crystal-and-wire "cat whisker" radio and most broadcasters
relied
on cumbersome shellac transcription discs to record their programs. Rayburn
gives a witty and warm-hearted account of historic developments in the next
seven
decades in broadcasting history, fondly recalling Edward R. Murrow's live
broadcasts from London in World War II, the heyday of Little Orphan Annie and
her
secret decoder badges, and his own participation in the early days of
full-time color television news broadcasts, among many other landmark
broadcast
events. Along with his personal memoir, the author includes conversations and
interviews with many noted individuals, including Bill Stern, Ronald Reagan,
Rin
Tin Tin, Burl Ives, Milton Berle, and Jimmy Carter.
