In response to Derek Teague's question aboutthe use of "PBX" in certain
instances, the reference is to an office telephone switchboard. PBX means
"Private Branch Exchange". This comes from the process of easing the
tremendous amount of calls placed through a central Bell System operator by
moving the handling of those calls closer to the source; inside the
particular corporate office.
Of course the early PBXs were manually operated. When dial PBXs spread to
the independent telephone industry (GTE, United and a host of others) they
were often called PABXs -- for private *automatic* branch exchange -- but
the Bell System continued to just say PBX.

Ray Druian asked:
Many of the names listed as sidekicks on TV are names I keep hearing on the
radio, on all sorts of shows. Does anyone know if tapes are
available of those TV shows? After hearing the voices of Barney >Philips,
Herb Ellis, and so many others on the radio for so many years, I'm curious
to see what they looked like.
Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised, but since the release of my book MY NAME'S
FRIDAY, several of the older TV DRAGNET episodes are coming out on video.
Episodes with Barney and Herb are available on VHS and DVD; check out this
site for details: [removed]
Meanwhile, Ronald Staley wrote:
The Big Sorrow was the name of the first show without the Romero
character. After that time period, Joe Friday had one woman partner,
played by I am not sure whom.
Actually, that wasn't the case - there were no female detectives paired with
men in the LAPD, which ensures that Webb would not have done this for
DRAGNET. The progression, after Yarborough's passing, is as follows:
1) Barney Phillips as Sgt. Ed Jacobs from 12/27/51 to 4/10/52.
2) Martin Milner as Off. Bill Lockwood (introduced as Ben Romero's nephew);
three episodes - 4/17/52, 4/24/52, 5/8/52.
3) Harry Bartell as Off. Frank Smith, 5/1/52 only.
4) Herb Ellis as Frank Smith from 5/15/52 to 6/5/52.
5) Ken Peters as Bill Lockwood, 6/12/52 only.
6) Vic Perrin as Frank Smith from 6/19/52 to 8/7/52.
7) Ken Patterson as Frank Smith, 8/14/52 only.
8) Herb Ellis as Frank Smith from 8/21/52 to 9/14/52.
9) Ben Alexander as Frank Smith from 9/21/52 until the end.
Ben would have been picked for future Dragnet resurrections, except he had
a slight problem of being in his cups most of the time; the prime reason
Jack Webb would not pick him up again.
That's the first time I've heard that. The official story, repeated by Webb
to several newspapermen, was that Ben was not available for the revival
because he had signed to do "Felony Squad" on ABC.
Jack had no qualms about drinking with his employees after hours, but I'm
sure Ben wouldn't have lasted six years and 256 TV episodes if he'd been
regularly drunk on the set.

I was interested to read Martin Grams' comments
about my posting on Paladin and his further comments.
The card I brought back from one of my frequent trips
to Hollywood was larger than business cards today,
and bore the image of the Knight chess piece in the
middle, with the program title spaced in two lines. I've
misplaced the card, but can't help wondering whether
the souvenir is of any value. Perhaps Mr. Grams can
give a more detailed description of the valuable cards
if he has seen them.

Subject: Noted in passing
I've been out of the loop for several weeks and haven't read the digests
closely so please forgive me in this information is repeated.
The current issue of Time magazine highlights the passing to two of
golden age radio's most prominent names, Jerome Hines, 81, and Larry
LeSueur, 93. Hines was a Metropolitan Opera star for 41 years
(1946-1987), longer than any other performer. In that capacity he turned
up every few weeks on Monday night's Voice of Firestone simulcasts on
first NBC and then ABC radio and TV. He also guested on other great
musical features on the air including, of course, the Met performances on
Saturday afternoons. LeSueur was one of [Edward R.] Murrow's Boys, a
fixture at CBS for many years. His multiple weekend five-minute
newscasts for Chevrolet in the 1950s were memorable. He turned up on
numerous news analysis specials. On Aug. 25, 1944 he gave Americans the
first radio report on the liberation of Paris. His delivery was
impeccable virtually every time out.
Elsewhere in this week's Time there's a photo of the late Allen Funt of
Candid Camera fame. The magazine notes that his concept began as Candid
Microphone on radio.
Here's one publication that, at least this week, appears to get it that
there was something before television. The current media gets a lot of
criticism in this forum, perhaps much of it justifiable. I'm happy to
note an exception.

Subject: New Twilight Zone radio series
Several issues ago Carl Armari got on our list & offered to send a free
demo disc of the show to anyone that asked for one. Well I emailed him &
got my audio CD a few days ago. Inside the mailer was a flyer for the first
2 volumes (8 episodes) plus another flyer for old TV shows & movies on DVD.
I played the CD as soon as I got it home & the show is really well done. So
much that I'm buying the first 2 CD sets!
I'd like to know what others think of the demo CD they have received.
While I admit I boycotted Carl & Radio Spirits (I still don't buy OTR from
Radio Spirits or Media Bay) while he was with them this radio series is a
whole new venture and just as interesting (to me) as the original TV
series. Sadly it's not played in the Houston TX area. However this radio
series is pretty good in my [removed]

Oh, that's an easy one. Every episode of Vic and Sade. Even the late ones
that weren't so great. But I'd love to hear the ones from when Rush first
came to live with the Gooks.
And any other episode dealing with Pom Pom Cordova (of the Bahayma Islands).
You either get it or you don't. I think Vic & Sade contains some of the
finest writing and acting of anything in OTR.

Are there any recordings of John Todd speaking in his real voice, like an
interview?
Any idea who played the role of Doug, the young boy in "Doug's Great
Adventure"? (the ep aired on KNX and discussed here yesterday and today)
Makes me wonder what ever became of him.
