Subject: Stuart Lubin

When I received word of the passing of Stuart Lubin this week, I thought
back across numerous pleasant associations in which he helped me pursue some
thorny issues in OTR research. Stuart was like a walking encyclopedia -- he
seemed to know everybody who is still breathing that ever appeared on
network radio, and legions that had already died. He possessed an
incredible memory for details and could call up experiences that he
witnessed, overheard or participated in directly, providing an eyewitness
account many times for situations we might never have known. An inveterate
live radio fan, he was in one of the chairs in the audiences of numerous
shows in New York at an early age, then moved to Los Angeles and continued
doing the same. He was so familiar to the stars at some venues, in fact,
that he regularly visited with them before and following their on-air
performances. One could be fascinated by the litany of tales he told. He
maintained active friendships with many of these, often driving by to pick
them up in their aging years to carry them to functions of mutual interest.
He loved to appear in amateur productions and earned a reputation as a
pretty fair actor. He maintained strong political opinions which he was
happy to share with anybody unapologetically. I marveled when he told me on
one occasion that he had been a high school Spanish teacher, something few
of us probably knew about his occupational skills. All of us in OTR have a
better grasp of certain data because Stuart Lubin was among us. I'm blessed
that my path crossed his at several points and shall miss his ongoing
willingness to be helpful as anyone needed.
