Subject: From one station to another
For about a dozen years publishers have released one of my broadcasting
texts each fall and in some years more than one. There won't be one this
year. I suspect that many of us readers dip into more than one hobby to
varying degrees. Since childhood I've maintained two interests but wrote
about one. For years I've felt a gnawing desire to produce a volume in the
other discipline: railroads as they relate to travel. I finally decided to
pursue it and have subsequently produced my largest, most comprehensive work
ever, never to be superseded by me.
In a few weeks McFarland will release "Rails Across Dixie: A History of
Passenger Trains in the American South." It includes documentation on
hundreds of major and minor rail carriers, short lines, urban systems,
commuter transporters, terminals, excursions, museums, etc. in a dozen
southeastern states. With 20 chapters, 10 appendices and over 160 photos
and illustrations, the nearly 500-page volume is a reflection of travel by
train from 1830 to the present.
While I suspect only an infinitesimal portion of this forum's readership
cares, I offer an explanation why there won't be a new radio book from me
this fall. I'm working on one for next year. McFarland and Amazon are
advertising this new text at $55; one vendor is selling it at $[removed]; yet
Barnes & Noble has it on the Web at $44 right now with free shipping.
Oh yes, there are a few radio-related mentions included in this treatise. I
couldn't totally ignore where I've been.

Subject: More Britons are listening to the radio than ever
Interesting article in Sunday's Los Angeles Times about the popularity of BBC
radio at home:
Cultural exchange: Radio 4 in Britain is evidence that the medium is as popular
as ever
More Britons are listening to the radio than ever - over 90% of all adults in
the [removed] - and the channel offers quality programs unequaled in the States.

I know that the BBC used to be financed by a license bought for radios, but the
article only mentions televisions. I wonder if they don't charge for radios any
more. Just curious.

Subject: Looking for Fire Bug or Arson topic shows
I'm looking to put together a set or collect as many shows as possible about
the theme of fire bugs or arson. I know there probably was a Suspense or
Escape show to two as well as a Yours Truly Johnny Dollar episodes.
Any input would be appreciated!

Subject: First Soaps
Alan Bell inquires about the first soap opera; was it "Painted
Dreams" or "Clara, Lu, 'n Em"?
The Guru of All-Soapy-Things, Jim Cox, in his definitive work, "The
Great Radio Soap Operas" (McFarland, 1999) sets forth the following
factual observations, which I will paraphrase for brevity:
"I agree with scholars who identify "Painted Dreams" as the first
daytime serial. (But we should not) [removed] shows that
displayed serial-like qualities ( [removed] "Sam 'n Henry", "The Smith
Family", and "The Rise of the Goldbergs") There was "Clara, Lu, 'n
Em" a comic dialogue between three [removed] show later became
the first network daytime serial (in 1932.) By the time "Painted
Dreams" arrived in October 1930, the groundwork had already been laid
with audiences waiting to be entertained on the installment basis."
I would strongly suggest that Alan read at least the first few
chapters of Cox's book before he concludes his presentation on OTR.
