Subject: Themes

Perhaps this topic has been broached before and I missed it, so pardon me if
I'm repeating. Has anyone ever compiled a tape of OTR themes and/or
signature songs presented by the original artists, whole or [removed]
just the opening bars of original themes such as A&A's "The Perfect Song",
Eddie Cantor singing "One Hour With You", Judy Canova's "Go To Sleepy,
Little Baby" etc. - or when the stars didn't actually sing their themes,
just the program's opening instrumentals? (Excuse the long-winded question)
And are these available commercially or from someone who has diligently
lifted the above from a multitude of OTR programs? From bandleader's themes
to snippets such as Burns and Allen's "Love Nest"....it would certainly make
for pleasant listening and bring back lots of memories. I have an LP around
here somewhere that has some OTR themes on it but they're played by an
anonymous orchestra and are not the originals as they were aired. I'd love
to hear the original openings/closings of some of the old shows. Anyone?

Hi All -
This is not exactly OTR but my wife is trying to remember the name of a
child's book and record set about a purple dragon with a squarish muzzle.
There were songs on the record.
She had it in the early 1950's.
If you know it or, better yet, have it, please email me offlist at:

Thanks much.

Frank Kelly asked:
I also seem to remember hearing a "fully staged" version of the
Broadway musical Lady In The Dark, starring Gertrude Lawrence (I
think). What radio show would that have been? Is it available now?

"Lady in the Dark" was performed on radio at least twice by Gerturde
Lawrence, and once by Ginger Rogers and Judy Garland. None of these
would be a "fully staged" version, since both shows were only one hour.
It may have been a special broadcast which I'm unable to locate in my
collection of radio show logs.

Hello, again --
"Lady in the Dark" appeared as an hour-long Lux Radio Theater
production on 1/29/45, starring Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland. I had
thought there was also a Railroad Hour program where Gordon MacRae sings the
songs from that musical minus the plot, but I believe I must have been
thinking about "One Touch of Venus." I can't remember if the Lux version had
songs in it other than "My ship has sails . . ."

Jan Bach

Yes. I remember well hearing the disquieting show when I was a lad in
the 50's. Though it was considered more a horror-mystery show than a
crime show, it usually involved a protagonist making a wrong turn in
life and paying a terrible price. Often, properly chastened by the
main character's fate, I would vow to myself never to commit murder.
And I never have.

Subject: 1943 AD PULLMAN FORT KNOX

Recently on ebay I won a 1943 Advertisement by the D Pullman railroad coach
company that mentioned Fort Knox. The ad is viewable as ebay Item #
1071871690. The ad shows a drawing of radio performers and Harry Von Zell
indicates the band had just finished entertaining soldiers at Great Lakes
Naval Training Station, Chicago and "Tomorrow Night - Fort Knox".
Since it mentions Harry Von Zell by name as the announcer, does anyone know
what program they are referring to, or can identify the people in the drawing?
Thanks,
Paul Urbahns

Happy Birthday Jack Benny!

As most of you know Feb. 14 was Jack Benny's birthday. I was just wondering
if anyone knew where I could get some of his movies and television programs
on video or DVD. If anyone does please contact me.

                 Thanks,

Ron Sayles <bogusotr@[removed]; writes:

During one of the many exchanges between Fred Allen and Jack Benny, Fred
hit Jack with a zinger and Jack came back with the line to the effect,
"if I had my writers here you wouldn't say that". My question is, was
that an ad lib or was it written in the script?

I seem to recall it was an ad lib, or so Benny claimed for years afterwards.
It certainly is similar to an obvious ad lib during a Benny appearance on
Bob Hope's show just after Swan soap picked up Hope's sponsorship. After a
wisecrack about Benny's teeth, Jack cracked both Hope and the audience up
with, "You wouldn't have said that if you were still pushing Pepsodent!"

In response to the query about the announcer for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
For television it is Lloyd D. Newall and I assume he would also do the radio
broadcasts.

From Those Were The Days --

1932 - George Burns and Gracie Allen debuted on The Guy Lombardo Show on
CBS. The couple was so popular that soon, they would have their own
Burns & Allen Show. George and Gracie continued on radio for 18 years
before making the switch to TV. All in all, they were big hits for three
decades.

1943 - My True Story was heard for the first time on ABC. The program
continued for 17 years and was
presented in cooperation with True Story magazine.
