For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC

and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this

Subject: This week in radio history 29 April to 5 May
From Those Were The Days
4/30
1945 "How would you like to be queen for a day!" That opening line,
delivered by host, Jack Bailey, was first heard on Mutual on this day.
The first Queen for a Day was Mrs. Evelyn Lane.
1945 Arthur Godfrey began his CBS morning show. His theme was Seems
Like Old Times. Arthur Godfrey Time ran until this very same day in
1972. Godfrey's show used live talent and not records. His popularity
with listeners was the major reason that several sponsors gave Godfrey
the freedom to ad lib their commercials and, from time to time, joke
about the products as well.
5/1
1931 Singer Kate Smith began her long and illustrious radio career
with CBS on this, her birthday. The 22 year old Smith started out with
no sponsors and a paycheck of just $10 a week ($139 in 2009 dollars) for
the nationally broadcast daily program. However, within 30 days, her
salary increased to a more respectable $1,500 a week ($20,934 in 2009
dollars).
5/5
1935 The program, Rhythm at Eight, made its debut. The star of the
show was 24 year old Ethel Merman. Though Merman would become a legend
years later, she didn't fare so well on radio. Her show was taken off
the air after 13 weeks and Miss Merman returned to her first love, Broadway.

Subject: Missing locomotives
Since the subject of stories of missing trains seems to have prompted
several posts, I thought it appropriate to mention that the Lone Ranger also
had to solve a case of a "missing train". In the episode entitled "The
Missing Locomotive" from July 22, 1949, a special engine starts out from one
town only to disappear before arriving at its destination. The Ranger finds
that an old mine siding switch has been tampered with, which caused the
engine to be diverted from the main track. The masked man and Tonto discover
the machine with the steam cocks shut about to explode with a damsel tied to
the top of the locomotive! Needless to say, the poor girl is rescued just
before the boiler explodes and the clever scoundrels who hijacked the engine
are exposed. It's a pretty good story, but certainly not original!

that Columbia never chose to re-issue the albums on cds.

Subject: The Lost Special
The missing train story that Dan Hughes inquired about on April 25 is "The
Lost Special", a non-Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first published
in 1898 (during that decade when Holmes was "dead" and Doyle produced no
Holmes short stories). "The Lost Special" was adapted for Suspense (broadcast
9/30/43, starring Orson Welles), and again for Escape (2/12/49, starring Ben
Wright). Both are more or less faithful to the original story, as I recall.
(I'm also pretty sure -- going from memory -- that different scripts were
used for the two series.)
Dan was kind enough to send me the Boston Blackie episode he mentioned, "Old
86 Is Missing," from 9/24/47. And it definitely very clearly rips off the
main story element, that of a train which mysteriously disappears between two
stations even though there are no side tracks it could be on. The overall
plot is quite unrelated -- instead of a story of political intrigue, it's
about stolen diamonds, so the motive is very different. It's no longer a
"special" but a regularly scheduled train. And of course Boston Blackie's
presence is forced into the story (somewhat heavy handedly in my opinion). So
it's not a case, as Dan first suggested, of the same script being reused for
a different program (though that did happen quite a bit in OTR). Rather, the
scriptwriter turned to the same source, and produced a less-than-faithful
version of it to suit the needs of a specific series. It's a rather decent
yarn, as Boston Blackie tales go. It's certainly interesting to
listen to it if you've read the original
A few comments: The Orson Welles' Suspense version of "The Lost Special" was
itself lost for over 60 years, until Randy recently turned up a copy and
posted it on his blog. It's still available for download, in a very nice
sounding copy, here:

Second: although this is not a Holmes story -- Conan Doyle having killed him
off five years previously -- there is an undoubted cameo by Holmes in the
story. Doyle alludes to a letter published in the Times, which comments on
the missing train and which was published "over the signature of an amateur
reasoner of some celebrity at that date". The letter begins:
"It is one of the elementary principles of practical reasoning," he remarked,
"that when the impossible has been eliminated the residuum, HOWEVER
IMPROBABLE, must contain the [removed]"
Sound familiar?
Several people have commented that this story was done on the Sherlock Holmes
radio show, but if it was, it wasn't run under the original title. It
certainly wouldn't have been difficult to adapt to that show, and such an
adaptation seems likely. Can anybody confirm if it was indeed adapted as a
Sherlock Holmes broadcast?
Lastly, if you're never read the story, it is now public domain and is widely
available online. It's one of the better of his non-Holmes short stories, in
my opinion.
Cheers,
Kermyt
