This is a tenet still held today by BBC Radio 4, in all of whose dramatic
programs the concept of *lack* of dialogue is considered as important as
dialogue. There will be pauses, especially if a character is undergoing any
sort of difficulty or stress, which gives the audience time to feel what the
character is feeling. (Not that it's completely silent; there's always
ambient sound.)

Subject: An Evening of OTR at the Library of Congress

On Saturday, April 16, the Metropolitan Washington Old-Time Radio Club will
be presenting three recreations at the Library of Congress Packard Campus
Theater in Culpeper VA. This will the the club's second appearance at the
Packard; our debut last August was well-received by a packed house, and the
Library's programmers were anxious to have us return.

This year's theme is to present genres that made up the average listening
day. We'll look at three: daytime serials (aka "soap opera"), in the form of
the venerable JOHN'S OTHER WIFE; afternoon juvenile shows, courtesy of that
immortal adventure serial, LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE; and prime time programming,
for which we've selected "one of radio's most unusual programs," PAT NOVAK
FOR HIRE. Live organ music will be provided for all three shows by Ben Model.

The Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation is the Library of Congress
facility that strives to preserve our cultural legacy of film, sound
recordings, radio & television. The theater is generally used for motion
picture screenings, but live performances are scheduled from time to time. In
between recreations, the sound recordings curator, Matt Barton, will speak
about the Library's work in preserving old-time radio. The theater is located
at 19053 Mount Pony Road, Culpeper VA 22701. The April 16 program starts at
7:30 pm, admission is free (your tax dollars have already paid for it), and
seating is first come, first serve. Arrive up to 45 minutes early for the
best seats.

Subject: Arthur Anderson

Reading Charlie's link to Arthur Anderson's obituary reminds me that just
last night I went to the New York Times on-line archive to research a
musical, "Tiger Rag," which my composition teacher at the U of IL, Kenneth
Gaburo, had written the music for, and which I attended a rehearsal of in
New York at the Cherry Lane Theater down in the Village, way back in January
of 1961. I met the whole cast at that time, including some famous (at least
to other actors) names, Nancy Andrews and Logan Ramsey among them. But
imagine my surprise when I finally located the review of the musical, with
the whole cast listed, including a Mr. O'Toole played by 40-year-old Arthur
Anderson! So although I must have met him at the time, I didn't make the
connection with anything, much less "Let's Pretend," which was such a
favorite of mine growing up in the middle forties.

Subject: Sky Pilot OTR

Has anyone heard of or have copies of a 1940s radio show called "Sky
Pilot"? It has nothing to do AFAIK with any modern use of the name. It
appears to have been a program produced in Houston at KPRC Radio, from
at least 1944-1950. I haven't heard any of them myself.

Any info appreciated, thanks.

Subject: Mention on As It Happens

Folks;

Last evening on the CBC, As It Happens mentioned Arthur Anderson's
passing. Oddly, they used it as an excuse to play an edited section of the
infamous Orson Welles "frozen peas" recording session, but at least he got
the mention he deserved.

You can find a podcast edition of the show for download at

Following up on my post about the Great Lakes Nostalgia [removed]

When I announced that 2015 would be the last year for Nostalgia Expo in
Cincinnati I said that I wanted to put my energies into something else.
Radio Studio East is that something else.

Radio Studio East will take place on May 13 & 14 at the Four Points by
Sheraton Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. Our special guests will be Ivan
Cury and Beverly Washburn. We will also be joined by Randy Larson's
Chicago Group Players.

Each evening at 7:00 [removed] we will perform and record three audio dramas
for later use on our podcast. [removed] The
performances are open to the public and are FREE (donations gratefully
accepted). The room (Salon G) will accommodate an audience of about
50-60 so seating is limited and will be available on a first come first
served basis. Doors will open at 6:30 each evening.

You can find more info on the old Nostalgia Expo website:

If you are in the Lexington area or feel like traveling here to join us,
we'd love to have you attend.
