I was reading along at [removed] when
what to my wandering eyes should appear but these lines about an early
advertising agency:

"The success of Benton & Bowles was closely related to the rise in
popularity of radio. Benton & Bowles invented the radio soap [removed]"

Oh yeah? News to me. While I'm buying the first sentence, the second won't
wash. B&B sponsored a handful of daytime serials ... but "invented" the
form? I don't think so! Whoever wrote that skipped all the documentation.
I'm thinking Irna Phillips and Frank and Anne Hummert must be rolling in
their graves.

There's a whole lot of stuff out there way beyond Wikipedia that is suspect
these days.

Subject: Nexus 25

Many thanks to you, Charlie, for the information on the Nexus 25 deal at
Crutchfield. I am now enjoying channel 164 at home as well as in the
car. There is another deal on the Nexus 25 at Circuit City. The price is
$[removed] with a mail-in rebate of $[removed], making the item free. Anyone who
missed the deal you told about, might try this.

Subject: Radio premium museum

A couple of thoughts For Joe Martelle's museum [removed]

I wouldn't limit it to radio premiums. I'd make it a History of Radio
Museum, with displays for your local stations and some of the legendary
nationals. This would be a great way to get your local stations
involved, and most of your visitors will probably be familiar with the
local stations. And everybody knows (or should know) WXYZ, WGN, WSB,
WHO, etc.

You can still emphasize radio premiums, but they wouldn't be the do-all
exhibit they would have to be if there were nothing else to see.

Another idea: We have a nearby museum (called the Douglas County Museum)
that is a renovated old grocery store. They change their displays every
six months. The theme might be WWII for one 6-month period, then the
Depression, then Grandpa's Farm. Nostalgia stuff, and many of the local
citizens love loaning display items.

All the exhibits are in flat glass cases that are right up against the
wall, so it is an easy thing to turn the museum into a dance floor.
Every month there's a Tea Dance, where a local Big Band made up of
retirees performs for free, couples pay $10 to dance and buy
refreshments. This provides money for the museum to continue to exist.
Most of the attendees are older, but some of the youngsters enjoy dancing
to music of the 40's too. And on New Year's Eve they have the Soda Pop
Hop, a non-alcoholic New Year's Eve party featuring a DJ playing music of
the 50's. Many of the attendees are in their sixties, and they dress in
leather jackets and poodle skirts. Fun without drinking - what a
concept!

A lot of the dance attendees would not otherwise have ever visited the
museum. But when they go to the dances they see the displays, tell their
friends, and so more people come to see the museum.

Please keep us posted on your progress!
