I agree that he portrayed a funny, delightful character on the Benny Show.
But, when he's singing, I find myself wishing that the time consumed doing
so was instead more comedy. I just don't enjoy that style of singing and
the typical pop repertoire he performed.

Of all the comedy shows, I think that the BEST vocalist was Dinah Shore,
during her stint with Eddie Cantor. If you want to hear her really swing,
listen to the Chamber Music Society Of Lower Basin Street shows.

This of course, is merely my opinion

Best,
Shiffy

I noticed that they did not "get" some of the original jokes. ...
Rochester said that Jack looked like the master of ceremonies at
Forest Lawn. Kids here in Billings, Montana didn't have a clue.

Some jokes were for grown-ups, and it is possible that even then a high
school student in the 1940s in Billings, Montana might not have gotten
this joke either. How many kids--then or now--are acquainted with
cemeteries? And Forest Lawn is a show biz/local reference as well.

Terry and the Pirates offered a "Terry Scope" which was nothing more than a
periscope, and it was made of cardboard. This was in latter 1941.

Subject: Museum of Broadcasting

Some 8 or 9 yrs ago, while on a business trip to NYC, I spent one morning at
the Museum of Broadcasting, which as I recall it, had materials from both
radio and TV. It was an amazing place and I only wish that I'd been able to
spend the entire day there. Now it's my understanding that there's a branch
of this Museum somewhere in the Los Angeles area.

Does anyone have an exact address, and is it comparable to the museum in NYC?

Subject: Students and The Shadow

Vince Long talked about and offered some examples of what he has been doing
with his high school students and his love of OTR.

First of all, congratulations Vince! I listened to the Shadow episode and
was very impressed with the overall production and must say it was much
better than I expected.

My only negative comment would be that the sound effects guy was a bit
carried away. From a recording perspective they sometimes burst in so
suddenly I jumped in my seat. Yet some of the effects were nicely updated
such as the street scene.

I think what you have done here is wonderful and as a former educator, I
applaud yours and your students' work!

Subject: Organists

Someone mentioned organist George Wright as being the organist at the
Paramount Theater. I think George was a west coast organist. I Never knew
him. However Lew White was the the Paramount organist as well as doing
radio shows. Lew was the organist on "Casey, Crime Photographer" when I
was the engineer on the show. My friend, John Dietz, was the diredtor (we
had both dated the same girls in Hartford at different times). John
Gibson was "Ethelbert, the bartender. Staats Cotsworth was Casey, and Jan
MIner was Jan Miner. Another famous radio organist was my friend, Dick
Leibert. I worked with him on "Second Mrs. Burton". Dick was the long
time organist at Radio City Music Hall. These guys were so busy that they
would sometimes doze off at the console.

A couple of others that I was fond of were Charlie Paul, Bert Berman, Abe
Goldman. Charlie was also a symphony conductor. They were a great bunch
and all of them were fine musicians. Last I heard from Bert he was with
the School of the Ozarks. Fond memories!

Subject: Harlan Stone

Harlan Stone is so generous with his time on this Digest, I hate to direct
yet another request to him. We all enjoy his humor, his real-life stories,
and his kindness.

There is, of course, the question of his book and I may be treading
treacherous waters with this request and comment. He may be saving it
for,,,,,The Book!

Mr. Stone will be appearing at the Queen Anne Library in Seattle at 2:00
[removed] on Saturday, November 3. He is the guest speaker at the REPS (Radio
Enthusiasts of Puget Sound) monthly meeting.

In fact his scheduled appearance is explained thusly by the REPS
Newsletter, "Air Check" [ Summer, 2001]: "November 3rd: Hal "Harlan"
Stone. His career as a radio performer began at age 8 and lasted until 23
with credits including LET'S PRETEND, DR. CHRISTIAN, BIG TOWN, and DEATH
VALLEY DAYS. At age 13, Hal won the role of Jughead on the NBC program,
THE ADVENTURES OF ARCHIE ANDREWS. Hal's many talents include that of
sculptor and painter."

I'd be interested if Hal could share anything about appearances on those
programs other than Archie.

Also, I am wondering if Conrad Binyon and Hal competed for roles and if
they knew each other in their wonderful radio days. I have only recently
heard Conrad Binyon on "Suspense," and "The Life of Riley", as well as
"Mayor of the Town, of course. It is obvious that both actors were in
demand during their adolescent years and both had continuing parts on
well-known shows.

And I can't resist asking. Did either run into Harry Bartell? Did Hal or
Conrad appear with Harry?

Maybe we could have a party, right here on this Digest! Do you suppose?

Subject: MAGIC ISLAND

G'Day,

Some months ago I made some enquiries regarding Magic Island and I received
some great feedback from people here. To recap, the issue was that
generally available out there was 128 episodes but some Dealers such as
Jerry H. listed 130 in the series. I noticed though that the episode
information for 130 was the same as 128. Speaking to people who replied, it
was obvious that 130 was the correct amount and that somewhere there were 2
missing episodes. In the end I listened to many shows and compared naming
etc and I have decided that I believe that the two episodes that are missing
are episodes 28 and 36 and that all the rest of the series names through to
the end are incorrect.

My next problem is for somebody willing to supply the missing episodes from
their 130 episode collection. I thought I had this arranged but I have had
no luck getting replies to my e-mails. Would somebody please be willing to
supply me the two missing shows? I don't mind buying them if that is what
is required. In the case that I have chosen the wrong two episodes, I may
need more, but it really does seem to be those two that are causing the
problem. Please help me to put this one to bed.

impressed by the quality of the audio.
