I want to thank those of you who sent me information on picture books of the
OTR performers.
I could also use some information on picture books of OTR performers for an
Illustration class at school. I know Ted Sennett's "The Old-Time Radio Book"
has a lot of good pictures. What are some other books? Thanks
Thanks,

I stand corrected. Les Tremayne IS in North by Northwest, as the flustered
auctioneer trying to keep the proceedings normal when Grant causes problems.
Ken Lynch is one of the policemen.

Subject: Is This A Shirt I Tee Before Me?
Gary [no last name] asks,
How feasible are T-shirt creations depicting our favorite OTR shows?
<snip> Just think of the treasure of ideas--T-shirts saying our favorite
phrases from shows that are forgotten (or never known) by the general
public but still revered by us--such as YTJD, various Dragnet lines,
etc
I preface my observations by pointing out that I'm not a lawyer.
However, let's attack this on three fronts.
1) It's feasible to print any phrase on any tee shirt. There are places
in almost any major city that will provide the service.
2) There is a difference between copyright and trademark. As I've been
told, copyright protects intellectual property ([removed], a writer's work),
but it can't protect something in general use such as a phrase like,
"Great scott!" A phrase, like the close of Captain Midnight's program,
"Happy Landings!" should be unable to be copyrighted. A phrase in
combination with an image specifically related to a show, Such as "Who
was that masked man?" and a domino mask might infringe a trademark.
Naturally, a show name, such as, "The Adventures of Sam Spade" could be
covered by trademark.
Trademarks are different, and trademark protection, as I understand it,
is a lot more complicated. Suppose someone wanted to trademark a
product. They give it a name and note it as a trademark. Two examples:
Kodak cameras and Coca-Cola/Coke. These are trademarks, which
differentiates each item from a lot of similar items. But they only
cover specific classes of item. Hypothetically, one should be able to
name an automobile tire a Coke and apply for a trademark: a tire is not a
soft drink. [Because of the pervasive exposure "Coke" gets, it might be
possible that a case could be made to prevent this, but less exposed
trademarks wouldn't have that protection.] It may be that some program
names are trademarked (The Lone Ranger immediately springs to mind), but
not all. This might require a trademark search.
3) Images can be protected under either copyright, or trademark, or both.
Quick, before R$I copyrights the idea. How would one go about doing
this?
RSI can't copyright that _idea_. A couple of years ago, one could buy
any of dozens of insect-shaped novelties ranging from tiny carvings to
stuffed animals, all labeled "Y2K Bug." Conceivably, one could have
tried to trademark the name, but nobody did -- and the name was too
pervasive anyway.
As long as a phrase isn't trade marked or copyright, there's nothing to
keep anyone from manufacturing tee shirts.

Subject: Re: Les Tremayne not in North by Northwest?
Hello again ---
Sorry to correct Martin Grams, Jr., but when he says of the actors in North
by Northwest:
Les Tremayne - not in the movie.
. . . I have to ask by what arcane sorcery the auctioneer at the Chicago art
auction was able to borrow the face of the general in "War of the Worlds,"
who definitely WAS Les Tremayne :-). And, just for the record, Olan Soule
plays the auctioneer's assistant standing just to the right of him. . . the
only time, I believe, that the two successive (and popular) leading men of
First Nighter appeared in any film together!

Subject: Edward Binns; Paula Winslowe
One never knows where an OTR Digest post will lead to.
Edward Binns, though not a famous name, was certainly a reliable character
actor. I hadn't thought of him in years until he was recently mistaken
for Frank Lovejoy by a poster to this forum. He came to my hometown to
make a movie in 1957 entitled PORTLAND EXPOSE, which detailed a high
profile racketeering case in Portland, Oregon. Part of it was filmed in
Gresham, a community directly east of Portland. My research suggests it
was an Allied Artists film based on a book by Bernard Victor Dryer entitled
PORTLAND EXPOSE. It was a Lindsley Parsons production. Anybody seen the
film or read the book? As I remember, Binns was quite friendly to the
locals who had never observed a movie being filmed.
On another subject, Paula Winslowe was mentioned by Martin Grams. As
important as she was to radio and early television, I am surprised that
more attention was not paid to her passing. Weren't there some special
circumstances, which resulted in her death not being known for some time,
or is my memory failing me?

Actually, as I recall, Wendy never did a "real" newscast. Douglas Edwards
usually read "real" news, then ended with the "And now Wendy, what's the
news from the ladies point of view" or some such.
The show had a long run on radio, according to previous posts. The
newscast gimmick at the end may have changed over the show's run. All I
know is that when I heard it, circa 1954, "Wendy Warren" did the actual
newscast. I'd seen Douglas Edwards on TV by that time, and I knew who he
was . I'm sure I'd remember if I heard him, and I didn't.

Subject: Shows on Shamrock tapes
Back in the 70's I had a reel to reel Sony and was
able to record several reels of shows such as Ghost
Stories, Lights Out, Haunting Hour, Peril, Weird
Circle, and others. Since then, my Sony has bit the
dust, and I have no clue to if any of the tapes are
any good. Is there someone in the Kansas City area
that I could get together with to check out these
Shamrock tapes?

Subject: N/NW CAST
There's a lot of speculation and confusion as to who is and who is not
in "North By Northwest (NNW)," so here is the OFFICIAL (heh) cast list. I
will list the roles as issued by the studio. Funny how they do that. I
also have the "also iu the cast" list. Some brief discussion of that list,
later. So here goes. Fasten your seat belts.
Roger Thornhill - Cary Grant
Eve Kendall - Eva Marie Saint
Phillip Vandamm - James Mason
Clara Thornhill (mom) - Jessie Royce Landis
Professor - Leo G. Carroll
Lester Townsend - Philip Ober (stage actor and sometime movie actor)
Handsome Woman - Josephine Hutchinson (I am also puzzled by the description)
(I am guessing she is Townsend's "wife." The phoney Mrs. Townsend to throw
Cary off in the movie).
Leonard - Marin Landau (looks like "asp" in the Orphan Annie comic here!)
Valerain - Adam Williams (the skinner thug)
Licht - Robert Ellenstein (the beefer thug)
Victor Larrabee - Robert Platt (Cary's lawyer here, he was James Dean's cop
friend in "Rebel Without A Cause" and the boss in TV's "Get Smart").
Auctioneer - Les Tremayne (YES, he IS in NNW)
(not in official cast list, but --) Olan Soule is working alongside
Tremayne.
Dr. Cross (the doc who certifies that Cary is drunk) - Philip Coolidge, a
great character actor
Captain Junket - Edward Binns (who sound and looks a lot like Frank
Lovejoy). (He comes to the Townsend house to investigate). (He went on
to make a zillion dollars doing TV voiceovers).
Chicago Policemen who take Cary into custody - Patrick McVey and Ken Lynch
(either of whom look a lot like Tom Tully).
(Ken Lynch was heard in a plethora of roles in radio).
Other faces, other credits --
Larry Dobkin was seated about the middle of the conference table when we
first see "professor" Leo G. Carroll. When he speaks, you recognize his
voice.
Stanley Adams was the police sgt that first encountered a drunken Cary.
Stage and movie character Ned Glass was a ticket agent who told Cary Grant
to "wait a minute."
That's all I know, except I do have an entire cast list. But that's way too
much typing on a Decoration Day (that's what we used to call it!) morning.
Take a veteran to breakfast today And I shall! C'est moi! :)

Subject: OTR and Trains
In addition to being a fan of OTR I am a railroad buff. I am compiling
a list for a trivia quiz of OTR shows that had trains or railroads as a
part of the content of the show either in the title, the story line, the
sponsor, etc. (Examples: Grand Central Station, The Mysterious
Traveler, The Railroad Hour, etc.) Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Subject: WOTW/COPYRIGHTS
In the last posting, Michaell Biehel, said that the Permission to perform
WOTW was a one-time shot. Be that as it may, let's not nit-pick, Mike. I
am sure that the (non-profit) organizations that want to perform this
script, will have sense enough to contact their "Legal Eagles," to find out
what has to be done. These organizations, such as Garry Yoggy's are not
that naieve as to think they could do something illegal. The webmaster of
the Old-Time Radio Script list is a contributer to this Digest, BTW.
And finally, if those scripts on the list have copyrights, then why are
they there for you, me or anyone else tp print out and recreate? Maybe even
dealers have copied them and sold them, either on the internet or at OTR
Conventions.
What it really boils down to is this: In order for these scripts to really
have their copyrights hold-up, a copy of each script that was performed
along with a recording of the show, would have to be filed with the Library
of Congress or the Copyright Office. Can you imaqgine just how much space
that would have taken up?
Owens Pomeroy
[ADMINISTRIVIA: Please remember that Mr. Pomeroy's opinions are _not_ those
of a copyright attorney, and should be taken with a considerable grain of
salt.

Now I know there will be many other people who caught
this error. But I thought I'd put my twon sense in
anyway. Les Tremayne is in the movie. He plays the
auctioneer who has all the trouble with Grant's
character. A point of interest is the man standing to
Tremayne's right. It's Olan Soule. If memory
serves,Ken Lynch is one of the cops who arrest Grant
for drunk Driving.
