I can only speak about what my drama group is doing on Friday afternoon but
here is what's happening then.
On Friday afternoon, November 1st, as part of the SPERDVAC old time radio
convention, 30 Minutes to Curtain will present two radio recreations: A DATE
WITH JUDY and X MINUS ONE "Mars Is Heaven". Hal Stone, who played ìJugheadî
on old time radio's ARCHIE ANDREWS program, will be featured in both
productions. Conrad Binyon (ìHankî on radioís One Manís Family and ìButchî
on Mayor of the Town) has joined the cast of both shows. Our shows start at
4:30 pm and admission is FREE! There is a charge for other events during
the convention. A special treat will be seeing and hearing the theremin
played live during the performance of "Mars Is Heaven".
Bobb Lynes says that on Friday evening, radio and TV veteran actor Herb
Ellis will direct a recreation of THIS IS YOUR FBI "The Adopted Thief" with
Larry Dobkin, Tommy Cook, Shirley Mitchell, Barry Gordon and Eddy King.
(Fans at the FOTR convention this past weekend saw what a talented actor
Tommy Cook is.)
The convention will be held Nov. 1, 2, and 3 at the Hacienda Hotel at LAX,
525 N. Sepulveda Blvd., El Segundo, CA 90245. For registration or
information call their toll free number, (877)251-5771, or visit

Subject: MP3 boombox
I don't know about anyone else, but I find I get tired of listening to my
collection exclusively through earphones. I've been actively looking for an
MP3-capable boombox. Now I've found one. It is a Sony CFD-520CP. I bought one
from
Walmart for about $100 and haven't found any bit or sample rate it won't
handle. I
buy many mp3 collections over ebay and trade with other collectors. For the
most
part, I can throw a cd straight from the mail into this device and listen
immediately. Actually it does take more than a minute to read the directory on
these disks, but after that it's smooth-sailing. It has a remote for
convenience.
It also has digital tuning and 20 or so preset radio buttons. I haven't tried
it
yet, but it has a tape recorder/player as well. Back to the cd-mp3 player: it
has
fast forward and rewind, but will not resume when interrupted. The small
display
shows your location within a program, so you can find it yourself on your next
session. I am in no way affiliated with Walmart, Sony or any other interest in
this product.

Subject: Re: FOTR Convention
Just thought I had better give you the straight scoop about the FOTR
Convention, so you don't have to read the biased reports from Charlie
Summers.
>From what I gathered, based on the comments of all the people I met,
everyone seemed to have a great time.
There were a great many Digest subscribers in attendance, and it was fun
putting a face to the posters. I even met quite a few "Digest Lurkers" who
came up and identified themselves.
They Convention organizers (Recreation producers & directors) sure kept me
hopping). I guess I appeared in 8 or 9 scheduled programs or panels. But the
thing I liked about it was the fact that I didn't have to do my "Squeaky
Voice" Jughead bit. I got the chance to demonstrate my versatility, range,
and depth of "talent". :) :) :)
Seriously, I got to play "adults" for a change. And I better mention this
before Charlie makes a wise crack. I even played a "Crow". (Not of the
Indian tribe persuasion, but of the feathered kind. :)
And guess what? The printer finally came through, and a couple of boxes of
"The Book" where shipped to the Convention in time. I am very grateful for
the response they received. (Read that [removed] amount of books sold to the
unsuspecting public.) :) We practically sold out. (I only had to bring 3
copies home with me).
And quite a few people even had the chance to read it in between Convention
events and were nice enough to come up and tell me how me how much they
enjoyed it. My thanks to my wife Dorothy for manning (or woman-ing) our
dealers table so people could drop by and get a copy. The poor kid never got
time to attend any of the daytime [removed] But she was there to lend me
moral support when I appeared in most of the evening Recreations.
My buddy and fellow poster Walden Hughes bought 4 copies. He wanted them for
Christmas gifts. (Hint! Hint!) Wow! I'm now a successful author and not just
a pretty face & squeaky voice. :)
My thanks to Jay Hickerson for inviting me again, and for putting together
another successful Convention. (I think the last time I was there was about
6-7 years ago.) And my thanks to Anthony Tolin, Gary Yoggy, Arthur Anderson,
Mitchell Weisberg, Howard Blue, Jack French, [removed] making the re-creations
and panels go off without a hitch.
It was great fun seeing (and working with) old acting buddies of mine, and
fans that I knew from other other Convention sites. And even my former
friend Marilyn Wilt from the Seattle REPS group traveled all the way across
country to attend. I say "my former friend" because instead of attending my
big moment, (a one on one interview that featured me), she opted to go
shopping in NYC instead. She really needs to get her priorities straight. :)
There was quite a contingent from the Los Angeles area. I was impressed with
the acting talents of my buddies Bobb Lynes and Barbara Watkins. And I
enjoyed working with Tommy Cook and Frank Bressee, formidable talent from La
La Land.
And would you believe, Charlie Summers even had a part in one of the
recreations. (He better keep his day job.) Naw! just pulling his chain. He
surprised me. He was actually good.
But I am a trifle annoyed at him. In his daily posting, he [removed]
and then a recreation of Nero Wolfe, starring Tommy Cook and Bill Hayes as
Wolfe and Archie,
Hey! What am I? Chopped Liver? That was the one recreation that I was
brought in special to do, I had a juicy part, and I don't even get "a
mention"? Shucks! And after I just said something nice about him. :(
Dorothy and I will only be home for two days, then we turn right around and
head for Los Angeles for the SPERDVAC Convention this coming weekend. Hope
to see the West Coast Digesters at that one. (I've got more books to unload)
:)
And I heard from Bob Burchett that he wants me to come to the Cincy Con next
April, so I'll be looking to see you mid-western Digesters at that one.
What's that expression? "If the good Lord Willin' and the River don't rise"
:)
I suppose I could have summed up my FOTR Convention report by simply
[removed]"I had a blast"
The only "downers" was the fact that my Buddy Bob Hastings couldn't make it
because of the car accident, and I never got a chance to get "Hug's" from
Lois Culver, who had the misfortune to come down with Pneumonia and couldn't
travel. Lousy timing on both their parts, but I'm happy to report that both
are recovering.
Love to all, and long live OTR.

Thanks for the pictures, Charlie. I wish you had a closeup of Hal's ring
on his right hand. It looks like turquoise, which I guess is the gem of
choice for former easterners who end up in the desert.
Hi Irene: You are absolutely correct. (Well, partially correct, at least). I
was wearing turquoise LONG BEFORE I moved west. (It is not a recent
"affectation"). I was a "Westerner" at heart from my early childhood. :)
Will you be going to the SPERDVAC Convention? If so, I'll show you the rest
of the baubles and beads. :)
I have yet to see the picture that Charlie posted of me carrying a few
libations. You were kind enough to leap to my defense when you posted.
I bet Hal said one of those drinks was for his wife.
You are absolutely correct again Irene. One of the lemonades' was for my
wife.
I just don't know about, our semi-revered "Listmaster". He spent the entire
convention skulking around trying to get pictures of me in compromising
situations. I even caught him hiding under the bed when my wife and I
returned to our room one evening.
But I will say this. His lovely wife Annie more that makes up for his
strange behavior. Thank God their child has at least one first class "Roll
Model".
By the way, may I be one of the first to offer my condolences. I am of
course referring to the "collapse" of the upstart [removed] Giants. :)

saw them around at conventions before. Anyway, as I was showing Ted and
Bob how the game of pool was played, :-) , one of these gentleman, the

I was also lucky enough to meet Hal, Robert Clary, Kathy Garver,

Subject: TV Guides
A discussion on the digest a few weeks back about TV Guides offering
articles on television programs based on radio shows just recurred to me
(don't know why after all this time) and was wondering if anyone has access
to TV Guide back issues at their local library. The nearest library to me
that has TV Guides on microfilm is about an hour and a half away and just to
get one article copied from microfilm seems silly for a three-hour drive.
The library won't copy it and mail it to me for a fee, so I figured before I
go spending half the morning and early afternoon later this week, maybe
someone wouldn't mind a few extra dollars in their pocket? The issue is
April 2, 1954. If anyone has a local library and can copy the article real
quick (most microfilm readers have a copy machine attatched to them so
copying the article takes seconds), I'll pay for their trouble.

Subject: FOTR ROCKS!!!!!
Hi all,
I'm going to jump on the "me too" bandwagon and say what a wonderful time
FOTR was. It was my first OTR convention, and I didn't completely know what
to expect. It was wonderful from beginning to end, and I greatly appreciate
the time that so many people took to stop and tell me their own personal
Benny stories. Especially Harlan/Hal/Hank Stone, who admitted during his
panel that he has a weakness for men in uniform. ;)
Most teenagers say, "Mom/Dad, can I please borrow the car?" I used to say,
"Mom/Dad, can I please go to Newark to the FOTR convention?" The answer was
always, "No." Probably a good idea, considering how much I would have spent
(or died not being able to spend) on Jack Benny tapes and ephemera.
But now being financially independent, I am thrilled to be "a part of the
family." Also happy that I'll be able to do it all over again this coming
weekend at SPERDVAC. So thanks again to everyone for being so warm and
welcoming.

Subject: fast random thoughts on the FOTR convention.
HAY KIDS!
Last year was to be my first convention, but personal and business
commitments kept me away for all but one afternoon and evening. All the more
frustrating because I live in jersey.
I had little time to find out who was who, look for digest members, or to
even chat, just made a fast run snatching bargains in the dealers rooms and
attend a recreation and run home.
This year I was not to be denied. At my wife's insistence we booked with Jay
, then we booked our room at the Holiday Inn, and off we shot, told nobody
where we where going or where we could be reached. Off we went on our long
trip from home and daily life. A full 25 min from our house!
Ah but can you really forget about those cares and woes for 4 days,
especially being so close to home, well if its the FOTR convention your going
to, YOU BET YOUR A** YOU CAN!
So many FACES you finally get to SEE who where only known to you as voices in
shows or authors or digest posters, page masters, encoders, recorders and
venders!
My God what a HOMELY lot they all are!
Only kidding .. I met some wonderful people and encourage every one on this
list to come next year.
just a few examples:
George Ansbro: (Actually met last year and he remembered something I said
that even I forgot!) a wonderful charming man to be treasured as long as
possible, and that voice could melt butter at 20 paces!
Arthur Anderson: rewords enthusiasm with twice as much of his own.
Frank Bresee: one of that endangered species, called gentlemen.
Laura leff: just say "oh, .....a bathing suit!" to her and her smile will
make you smile too.
Ben Ohmart: reminds me of the Cheshire cat, its the quiet ones that have the
wickedest sense of humor.
Hal Stone: cornered him to say hi when he went out for a smoke. pleasant
enough,
funny, interesting, but later the next day I witnessed his dark side came out
as he started screaming like a bird, and yelling "shoot him shoot him" and
walking like a chicken, this in a room full of people! is this a resent
problem or is it chronic? I must read his book to find out.
Martin Grames, Jr.: friendliness + knowledge + bargain prices at his table =
my wife and I trying to fit 26 video tapes in our luggage. Thanks .. I think.
Gusts Bill and Susan Hayes: gracious and charming,
Robert Clary : depressing, I'm 37 and haven't had half his energy and zest
for 10 years now. He physically attacked a number of people and was jumping
up on the furniture, I on the other hand was in such bad shape he gave me a
neck rub ....Don't ask.
Charlie Summers: I just had one opportunity to say hi and I did [removed] repeat
myself, thank you again Charlie for this digest and the wonderful
contribution it makes to the hobby.
Jay Hickerson : wow, did he eat drink or sleep at all? A wonderful job. Hay
jay is it too early to book next year:)
Strangest moment: Joe Franklin bumped into ME in the hall, grabbed me by the
arm pointed, smiled and said excitedly ..Hay don't I know you from someplace!
