but I do know that it takes a great
deal of skill to 'play for laughs' in any art form. Otherwise, it all falls
apart and is anything but funny.

I have heard several times that Spike Jones and his City Slickers were very
seriously accomplished musicians, and the few occasions they played
"straight,"
it showed. So I don't doubt that a bit.

Subject: Recent Happenings

Laura Leff (who I saw recently at Eddie Carrolls super one man Jack
Benny Show) mentioned in digest #326 the film "Hollywood Canteen "which
just happens to be one of, if not, my very favorite movies. One of the
main reasons for that is Joan Leslie who I fell in love with as a
teenager when I first saw that movie.
Last night while attending a tribute to Eddie Cantor in which Joan was
participating, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with her for
awhile. I asked her about radio appearances and though she was a little
vague about it, said that mainly it was to recreate her movies. She
remembered doing "Yankee Doodle Dandy" in particular and named Lux Radio
Theater and Lady Esther Screen Guild Players.
She is still a lovely lady and very nice nice nice. Most importantly to
me I got a big long hug from her, that I'll always remember.
Question: Does anybody know of any of her shows that are available? I
Have Yankee Doodle Dandy. I didn't think to ask her if they ever did
"Hollywood Canteen" on the air.

Subject: Benny's violin playing

Jazman asked if Jack Benny could really play the violin well. I remember
seeing a movie, maybe it was a kinescope of Jack playing the Bach concerto
for two violins with Isaac Stern -- and Jack did quite well! There may be
other examples out there.

Subject: Propagation

I hope this qualifies as an old-time radio question. Here goes: The Washington Post at
times, as late as today, has noted that one of the beauties of baseball is
long-distance reception of night games, and that certainly was true--however, it is my
experience over the past few years that stations you could normally pick up in
Washington, [removed] ([removed], WSB, Atlanta; WJR, Detroit; KDKA, Pittsburgh; KMOX, St. Louis,
etc.) have faded away. I know that smaller stations have been allowed to intrude into
the clear channels, and I suspect internet radio has a lot to do with it, so is there
some compendium, treatise, analysis, whatever, that discusses the propagation patterns
of yore versus today's patterns?

Subject: Re: Yours Truly

My wife and I have been listening to the 'Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar'
series for the last three weeks or so. We have listened to several
5 part programs, but mostly the half hour episodes with Bob Bailey.
Every episode we have listened to has been either AFN or has had the
commercials cut out. Who sponsored these shows? Are copies of them
available with commercials?

For most of its revival run (1955-62), YTJD was a sustaining program at the
national level, although a sixty-second music window was provided at the
conclusion of an episode for local stations to run promotional spots or
insert local commercials. There are two weeks of daily stripped shows in
late November and early December of 1955 which, somewhat bizarrely, use the
hardboiled detective show to sell, ahem, GIANT STUFFED ANIMALS, though.

A number of the 5 part series are missing one of their episodes, you miss
a lot when 20% of the show is not there. Where can I get complete 5 part
shows or are some of these missing episodes just not in existence?
Thanks in advance.

Of the 280 five-a-week YTJDs broadcast, only about five are uncirculated
according to the Haendiges log:

At least one of these missing episodes was reputed to have entered the
market in recent months, however, leading to speculation that the rest may,
in fact, exist in the hands of private collectors. Those that are known to
exist can generally be obtained through commercial dealers:

or via the usenet-based OTR newsgroups upon request:

Subject: OTR License Plates?

Just curious as to how many of you have vanity license plates that have
OTR references.

In Illinois, Chuck Schaden has OTR GURU.

I saw J BENNY 1 on an Illinois plate a couple of years ago at the
Cincinnati convention.

I have JK BNY 39 on one car and RHYMER 3 on my daughter's car (for Vic &
Sade writer Paul Rhymer--no meaning to the 3 except that in Illinois, if
you put a number at the end you pay $12 instead of $75 like Chuck had to
pay!).

Anyone else?
