Hi folks,
Watch the [removed] Jack Benny stamp campaign hit the AP Wire this morning
and I'm getting a lot of feedback on it showing up here and there. I've
been interviewed for CNN Radio, KGO, and am doing America in the Morning
(Jim Bohannon, Westwood One) tonight. So let me know if you see/hear the
word getting out.
And don't forget to sign the petition at [removed]!

I no longer have the exact date but I have on my blog
[removed] this week a
newspaper schedule for Cincinnati radio stations from a Monday during
wartime. Seems like something you would all be interested in.

PS-There's a cool Jack Benny ad a dya or so later on the blog, too!

Subject: Gildy and the McGees
Thanks to a lister giving a heads-up, I was able to actually
program the Dish digital recorder for the Gildersleeve and McGee
movies on Turner Classic Movies. More important, I figured out
how to get them to play back -- not that it was worth the effort.
Oh, it was worth it in the sense that I had heard of them for
years and finally was getting a chance to see the stars of a
couple of my favorite radio shows, but, mercy, as movies, what a
disappointment. Except for a few good lines, it was a wonder they
managed to make it to an hour and 15 minutes. Gildersleeve's
chuckle grew tiresome in a hurry. And the endings ... what
endings? You realize they had no clue as to how to end it,
either, when Gildersleeve turns to the camera and says,
"Goodnight, folks!"
It was interesting to see Walter Tetley playing the part of a
hotel bellboy. It's probably been discussed here before or is
included in the books about Gildersleeve, but I suspect Tetley
was wearing four- or five-inch (or higher) platform shoes. I
noticed the closer scenes with him never showed lower than what
might be perceived as lower calf of the leg, and in one scene he
quickly moved behind a couch to prevent a better look ... even
so, his walking didn't look normal, and I believe (without going
through the pain of replaying the show) I saw the impression of
his knee rather high on the legs of his pants.
I was disappointed, too, that he went uncredited in the movie ...
and correct me if I'm wrong, I believe I recognized the voice of
the police detective near the end of "Gildersleeve on Broadway"
as that of Ken Christy, who played the police chief on the radio
program ... and while Richard LeGrand played Peavey in the
movie, too, I think I recognized his eventual replacement,
Forrest Lewis, playing one of the other druggists. It turns out,
trying to spot people and voices was more entertainment than the
movie.
Based on these shows, I'd say radio did a better job of
recreating movies than movies did of radio programs.
Bob C.
