Subject: Jack Benny - The Needle Scratches

Hi Gang -

The other day I heard a Jack Benny program where Bing Crosby was Jack's
guest.
I believe the original broadcast date was April 4, 1948. Of course I heard
this program before, but
this time I caught what could be an "in-joke" for the first time. I am
sharing this with you in case
you might have missed it, too.

Jack remarked to his cast that it is difficult to be a guest on Bing
Crosby's show because
"The Needle Scratches". This appears to be referromg to the fact that
Crosby's broadcasts were
recorded ahead of time. We all know that Crosby's programs were recorded
on tape, not disc, but
the joke is still funny to listeners who are aware of the recordings.

I wonder how many people in the audience - both in the studio and at home -
caught it.
It took me sixty years to appreciate the gag.

Happy Taping (Disc-ing?)

I can't seem to find any info on this OTR program. All I know it
is that it was on the air around 1948-49, and was hosted by Mel Allen.
Maybe this was the title it had early on and it was changed later to one
people may better recognize. I don't know. Why is the info on this
game show so hard to find?

        Any info will help!

Thanks,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: cassette deck recommendations?

My cassette deck, which had been the weakest part of my audio setup,
apparently died. I very rarely use cassettes; maybe 5 to 10 per year on
average. I do a ton of reels, but I have plenty of backups there. Anyway,
any recommendations for a reliable, middle-of-the road model?

Reason I ask is that I was thinking of borrowing some cassetes from
SPERDVAC. I go for the lowest-generation reel, whenever possible, but on
the Hollywood Museum library, that isn't possible - only cassette.

Subject: Arthur Tracy

Jack French posted about "The Street Singer," Arthur Tracy.
I interviewed [removed] by telephone on my nostalgia radio show when he
was age 93 and living in NYC. I played his signature song, "Marta" of
course and we talked a bit about his performances, he was very
personable and articulate but he was mostly interested in relating his
lifelong zest for exercise.

He said he walked every morning, stepping briskly down Fifth Avenue and
continued with other examples of how to stay fit, trim, in good health
and he was in his nineties! He was proud of relating his experiences
with eating small portions of food, drinking water and sleeping well,
concluding with this advice in a strong voice, "Russ, you've got to
keep your ligaments limber." - and that was pronounced "lim-ber-r-r."

I've just now finished doing my exercises this morning keeping myself
"lim-ber-r-r". And I'm in my seventies, looking ahead to being in my
nineties! ( Thank you, Arthur! )

Subject: Dates on syndicated radio shows

Specific (as possible) broadcast dates on these OTR programs
would be helpful:

"Bold Venture"

"I Was A Communist For The FBI"

"One For The Money"

There's rarely, if ever, such a thing as specific, definitive broadcast dates
for syndicated radio shows like "Bold Venture" or "I Was a Communist for the
FBI." In terms of proper documentation, recording dates, mastering dates or
release dates would be acceptable, but all a broadcast date attached to a
syndicated show usually means is that the episode aired on that particular
date in one particular market out of the many other dates it aired in other
markets, often over a period of years.

Hey you "Hit Paraders!" I have a request from an online listener
asking: "Where can I find the music lists for 'Your Hit Parade' - the
top songs that they played on all of the shows 1935 to 1955." If there
is a source to find the lists for the television years 1950 to 1959 as
well, would be great and I'll pass that along too.

Whither Fred Allen? According to a story in today's (19th) "Newark
Star-Ledger" about innovators in the field of telephony:

[removed];coll=1

the name of the editor of "Invention & Technology" magazine is "Fred Allen."

This reminds me of a time when I was about ten years old in the early 1970s
around the time comic-strip art was being celebrated by the recent publication
of large books like "The Celebrated Cases of Dick Tracy," "Arf! It's Little
Orphan Annie," and "Superman: From the '30's to the '70's." Ever eager to
locate more of these wondrous books, I looked in the card catalogue under
"Superman" and requested from a librarian the title "Man and Superman." Of
course, I was greatly disappointed when the librarian informed me that this
title by some guy named George Bernard Shaw had nothing to do with the "Man of
Tomorrow."

Since I never was much of a Shavian, I've never read "Man and Superman." I
wonder if it's any good. Maybe the "Might Allen Art Players' once dramatised
it.

Best always from the ether,

Derek Tague

If you're not going to the REPS convention next weekend and are in the Los
Angeles area, you can still see a radio performance on stage. California
Artists Radio Theatre (CART) presents "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", an
original radio adaptation, of the [removed] Baum [removed] the film, on
Saturday, June 28th at 1:30pm at Beverly Garland Little Theatre.

Dorothy will be played by Elaine Horn. She toured with Warner Bros Sing along
programs and is appearing in Palm Springs this coming week, doing her one
person show of the Wizard of Oz. She has appeared at the Greek Theatre and
the Hollywood Bowl as a Judy Garland look alike. She is playing Dorothy as
younger, as she is in the Book version.

Others in the cast are Norman Lloyd as Oz, Marvin Kaplan as the Cowardly
Lion, Marty Maguire as the Tin Woodsman, Paul Keith as the Scarecrow. Leslie
Easterbrook as Glinda the Good, Selma Stern as Selma the Good, HM Wynant as
the Wicked Witch, Bob Legionaire as Uncle Henry, and Peggy Webber as Aunt Em.

The announcer is Sky Mc Dougall, music by Jay Munns, sound and engineering by
Tony Palermo.

All proceeds beyond expenses will be sent to "Americans for Orphans", to
people living in Seattle who have adopted a child from the very orphanage
that was destroyed in Sichuan Province, where 69,000 people were killed.

An extra performance at 5:30 pm will be added if there are enough ticket
sales. Peggy also wants to send some receipts to the Salvation Army for our
own victims left homeless by the Midwest floods and tornadoes.

The theatre is located at the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, 4222 Vineland
Avenue, in North Hollywood. Admission is $15, $10 for seniors and children
under 12. Call 213-683-3422 for reservations or visit
