Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Halo everybody, Halo
Kermyt Anderson inquires about the origins and early history of Mr. and Mrs.
North.
Although this amateur sleuthing series premiered as a comedy show -- a fact
that most of its fans have probably never realized -- to become successful,
its bent for domesticity and romantic adventures was shelved and its focus
made deadly serious. Even at that, the New York yuppies who passed
themselves off as a publisher and his homemaker-spouse continued to make
lighthearted wisecracks as they stepped over bodies in dark alleys and were
rendered unconscious by unknown assailants dispensing blows to the head
almost every week.
When the continuing radio feature was launched with a fervent comedic motif
Dec. 30, 1942 over NBC, its inspiration was rooted in a series of fictional
tales appearing in 1930s issues of The New Yorker magazine. Based on "a
lighthearted, comfy couple" set in "amusing domestic adventures," those
narratives were originally penned by Richard Lockridge. Joined by his own
spouse, Frances, in 1940, together they turned the focus of the mythical
young affluent couple into "the most successful amateur husband-wife crime
fighting team of the time," as one critic assessed. Their book, The Norths
Meet Murder, was published and the popularity of the proletarian sleuths
increased when they were introduced to wider audiences by way of stage and
celluloid venues. All of this happened before the Norths hit the airwaves,
initially and ironically reverting to situation comedy there without
traipsing over bodies and the whodunit elements. Carl Eastman and Peggy
Conklin played Jerry and Pam in that ill-fated distraction. It was only
when the Norths turned their attention to murder and mayhem that 20 million
listeners became habitually addicted to the sheer escapism they provided
each week.
Joseph Curtin and Alice Frost were brought in during 1942, not long after
the debut, to transform the series into its better remembered
crime-with-humor variation. They hung on through the 1953-54 season when
both departed, replaced in a final season by Richard Denning and Barbara
Britton, who had played the same parts on TV. The last audiocast aired over
CBS April 18, 1955.

Subject: Recycked plots
Thanks to John Olsen for Clarifying my question about recycled plots in Old
Time Radio. I was thinking more about Plots reappearing in dissimilar
programs - like the Shadow script being reused on Suspense, rather than
between similar shows like Suspense and Escape. Maybe someday someone will
discover a script from The Aldrich Family beimg used again on Lights Out.

Does anyone know if he is the same Michael Redgrave who starred in The
Adventures of Horatio Hornblower? By coincidence, I've been listening to
that series all week.
It's good but muddy sound is making it hard to follow some of the twists and
turns in the plots. Great sound effects in the navel battles, though.
