Jim Burns wrote about several Leo label albums of the 60s. They also issued
GREEN HORNET- CANINE CULPRIT / COUNTERFEIT A-GO-GO in 1966. The theme song
used
was made to sound like the TV version, but otherwise it was like a radio drama.

A friend of mine has asked for information on Happy Jack Turner. I was
unfamiliar with the name. Here's the message from my [removed]
"Have you ever heard of an old radio personality called Happy Jack Turner? He
was on NBC and his gimmick was singing along with a recording of himself so he
could do duets and such. I guess it was an early version of multi-track
recording. And, do you have any of his shows?"
Can anyone help my pal out with some info or leads to some recordings?
Thanks,
Mark Orr

Has anyone ever heard of "Roxy's Gang" It was a radio broadcast from the Roxy
in NYC. Aired between 1929-1933. It was off the air in 1934 and then on again
for 1934-35. It was a national broadcast, but I can't seem to find anyone who
has heard of it, nevermind an OTR of it.
John Dunning has a write-up about the musical variety show Roxy and his Gang
in his book, "On the Air."
It was broadcast on WEAF New York from 1923 to 1925; on the Blue Network
from March 7, 1927 to July 27, 1931; then on CBS from September 15, 1934
to April 27, 1935. It was hosted by Samuel Lionel Rothafel, known as "Roxy."
He closed each show with the words, "Good night, pleasant dreams, and God
bless you."
Unfortunately, I have not come across any recordings of this show yet.

TIYL was so successful that he needed a replacement host for Truth
or Consequences - that is how Bob Barker got his big break hosting
for 21 years on TV. He produced or packaged 21 shows including Name
That Tune and The People's Court.
Actually, Jack Bailey was Ralph Edwards's replacement on "Truth or Consequences" and
hosted it for quite a few years. After the prime time version, hosted by Jack Bailey, ended in
September 1956, ToC returned as a daytime morning show on 31 December 1956, and that
was when Bob Barker began hosting it. An evening edition of ToC returned for awhile in
1958, hosted by Steve Dunne.
I saw the premiere of the daytime show, since it was during school vacation. It was initially
introduced by Ralph Edwards, who said that Jack Bailey would no longer host the show
because "he was too busy crowning queens," and then introduced Bob Barker.

When placed alongside the Kit Carson script, which takes place in
1826, you can see how vigorous the masked rider of the plains
really was, to say nothing of his horse, Silver!
I once had a dream about the Lone Ranger in his old age, wearing glasses over
his mask.

"Roxy's Gang" was a weekly musical feature presided over by S. L. "Roxy"
Rothafel, evolving from a a weekly series of remote broadcasts from the
Capitol Theatre, where Rothafel served as Managing Director --first heard
over WEAF in November 1922. The program's origin was more experimental
than anything else -- it was originally intended as an inexpensive method
of testing remote broadcasting techniques, since Western Electric had
wired the theatre with an elaborate experimental public address system,
and used the audio from the theatre as a source of signals for testing
work done back at the Western Electric labs. Pickups of the theatre's
stage shows over WEAF were a logical extension of this work.
This experimental series gradually became more personality-oriented, with
Rothafel presenting semi-classical and concert-oriented vocalists who
were featured in the Capitol's stage shows, along with selections by the
Capitol Grand Orchestra. Then, in 1925, as the program was attracting
attention over the Red Network, Rothafel was replaced as the Capitol's
director by Major Edward Bowes, who took over the radio program and
turned it into the long-running "Major Bowes' Capitol Family."
Rothafel had left the Capitol to open his own theatre -- the Roxy --
which was wired for radio from the very beginning, and as soon as it
opened in 1927, he resumed broadcasting -- this time over WJZ and the
Blue network, duplicating the format of the original Capitol Theatre
broadcasts in every particular. This series ended in 1931, and Rothafel
moved on to other ventures, leading up the design team for Radio City
Music Hall. He dabbled occasionally in radio after that, including a
brief attempt to revive the "Roxy's Gang" formula in 1934, but without
success. His style of presentation, rooted in the technique of the
mid-twenties, was passe by the mid-thirties, when such personalities as
Rudy Vallee and Eddie Cantor had taken the variety format far beyond the
"Gang" concept. Rothafel was unable to keep up with the trend toward a
less formal, more personality-oriented presentation technique -- and fell
victim to the changing times.
Only two recordings of Roxy broadcasts are known to exist. The Edison
Historic Site in New Jersey has an experimental 30rpm disc containing a
special broadcast from the New York Radio Exposition of 1928 at Madison
Square Garden, with Rothafel as master of ceremonies and members of his
Gang on the bill, as well as a rare radio appearance by Thomas Edison.
Fragments also survive of a November 1931 all-star program to raise
awareness of the need for unemployment relief, with Rothafel again
serving as MC, and his musical protege Erno Rapee conducting the
orchestra. Rothafel himself died in 1936.

Subject: last Big Broadcast on WVXU
Today was a sad day in Cincinnati radio; WVXU's the
"Big Broadcast" had its last show. It was not one of
the run of the mill OTR rebroadcast shows; it had very
lo-gen shows that weren't chopped up, and sometimes
some rarities. They aired the finest available copies
of Bold Venture too.
WVXU is one of the Public Radio stations here, but
it's much better than the average NPR station. Dr.
King was certainly a visionary, and helped bring back
OTR through Mike Martini and Mark Magistrelli (Peabody
Award winners). It's what helped bring me into OTR.
I believe the Big Broadcast was also one of the top
fund-raisers. For 15 years, WVXU has been an old
friend on the radio and it's sad to see it go. The
classical station (which has about 2 listeners) bought
WVXU and promptly ruined it. We miss you Big
Broadcast! Thanks for all the entertainment, and you
richly deserved the Peabody Awards. The Big Broadcast
went out with a fascinating show; the last show on
WCPO in 1966 - in which the old-timers reminisced
about Cincinnati OTR back in the day.
