Subject: CBS Bongs the Internet
Hi Jim Cox. I completely agree that the CBS Hourlies is one of the last
vestiges of OTR. I have been listening to CBS Radio for 47 years. My favorite
CBS newsman was and always will be Alexander Kendrick (I have two pictures of
him in my house). CBS Radio is under siege: 1) Fox Radio has signed an
affiliation agreement with Clear Channel. Many Clear Channel stations have
dumped ABC radio, switching to FOX. 2) ABC Radio is targeting CBS affils as
replacements. My friends at Westwood One tell me they are working hard to
protect the CBS Radio brand name. I remind them early and often they are the
guardian of America's oldest network and the heir of Paley's radio empire.
The strategy is two fold: 1) Renew existing affiliation agreements with
current CBS affils. At this time they are not trying to grow the number of
new terrestrial radio stations for CBS (sorry, Jim, no CBS in Louisville
yet). 2) Westwood One is seeking audience growth for CBS Radio thru the
Internet. Go to Yahoo search and punch in RADIOMAT. This is how you can
listen to the Columbia Network at home. RADIOMAT features 11 CBS O&Os that
stream cast their programs. Just hit Listen Live. I am very gratified to
finally hear the CBS Chirp and Bong on blow torch KDKA, a long time NBC affil
in the glory days of OTR. Westwood One tells me that about 17,000,000 million
internet listeners tune in per week. Not bad. One question. When was the CBS
Bong first heard on the network? I have some old Kate Smith Speaks shows on
tape from around 1944 where one can clearly hear the Bong followed by Ted
Collins saying "it is high noon in New [removed]". Arthur Godfrey Time also
featured the Bong at the start of his program in 1947. I understand the
Chirp sound is generated by a switch device at the Columbia Net and is a type
of cue for affils up and down the line (over 500 affils per Westwood One).

Tom Mix died in a car accident near Florence Arizona in October 1940.
I did know about this, but I'm really looking for Arizonans who were in
radio. Not radio people who died here, or retired to here. Was it Jane
Russell who ran a saloon in Sedona for many years after she retired?
Whoever, I guess I'm looking for folks who started out in AZ, not ended up
here.
But it does remind me that several years ago I was driving on that road
where Tom Mix was hit by a suitcase and died. I knew the Tom Mix memorial
was coming up soon. I had been by it several times but had never stopped to
read the monument. I thought maybe that day I would do so.
As I approached the turn-out, I noticed there was a man there. No vehicle
around. Just a man, and he was kneeling in front of the monument in what
looked like a prayer posture. I decided that would not be a good time to
stop!

Subject: Studs Terkel
I was reading an interview with Bill Idelson [Vic 'n Sade] conducted by
Frank Brizzi in which he mentioned he also worked on other programs in
Chicago concurrently with Vic 'n Sade. One of them was 'Secret City', a
children's/juvenile program, and he recalled that it was the first radio job
for a very nervous Studs Terkel who was the writer. and according to Idelson
was pretty well written.
I was aware of Studs Terkel's wonderful NPR Interview show but not aware
that he ever did any other radio work. Although an excerpt of 'Secret City'
was played during the Idelson interview I haven't seen any episodes
available on the internet.
Is anyone aware of any other Studs Terkel work in OTR, or know anything more
about 'Secret City'.
Just curious.

While listening to the Couple Next Door I sometimes hear commercials that
feature Gaylan Drake. He had a show on CBS in the late 50's. Does anyone have
an example of his show or know anyone who has?

Subject: Re: : Ed Murrow Movie
Sean Dougherty reported that a film about Edward R. Murrow is being made.
[removed] says:
The screenplay by George Clooney and Grant Heslov traces the true
story of how Murrow (Strathairn), and his producer, Fred Friendly
(Clooney),
helped bring an end to the tyranny of the blacklist and the House
Un-American Activities Committee' anti-Communist hearings.
Although Murrow did have a role in the breaking of the blacklist, that
really was a separate issue from that of his anti-McCarthy broadcasts. I
don't see how they can have a film that would cover the breaking of the
blacklist without including John Henry Faulk, who is not listed in the list
of characters in the film. Murrow paid some of Faulk's legal bills and
testified at the trial I believe, but that major part of the blacklist
story is apparently not part of this film. What is ironic about this to me
is that one of my colleagues at school is a longtime friend of the Clooney
family, knew George from the time George was an infant, and also was a good
friend of John Henry Faulk.

Lynn Osborn as you recall, was "Cadet Happy' on radio and TV, on
"Space Patrol."He always wore a flattop and had a turned up pixiest
nose.
I beg to differ. Lynn Osborn had a full head of hair, slicked down in 1950s style, which
sometimes got messed up when he got roughed up by the villain.

Attention digesters: the following televislion documentary producer has
asked for help identifying people who actually heard the 1938 WOTW broadcast
when it was on and can comment on the impact it had.
Can anyone help her?
Please contact me off-list if so.

"Our television production company is currently wrapping up a one-hour
History Channel documentary on 'War of the Worlds.' We would love to
interview several people who heard first-hand the 1938 broadcast and can
recall the reaction it caused. Los Angeles residents are preferred, but not
neccessary. I'm a freelancer."

it just kind of appeared on the Internet -- but it's nice.
