Subject: Martin Grams & LP

Hi, Howard. Just putting your mind at rest about Martin Grams' ethics. He doesn't get
any $ for Let's Pretend books sales. In fact, he donated the log for the LP book for the
mere cost of research, which was pretty damn generous and singularly refreshing in the
book trade. Not trying to hammer the point, but he's actually helped me and a lot of
other authors of the books I publish by doing a Lot of fact checking and editing (where
does he get the time?) for no other compensation than the sheer love of radio. If there's
ever to be a patron saint of radio, this is the guy who should be nominated first.

I am friends with the granddaughter of Maxwell Anderson, the playwrite.
Does anyone know of any radio writing that he did.

There was a version of Mary Queen of Scotts but I don't know which one.
Would like to get a copies of any of his work that was available.

Howard Blue wrote regarding the Let's Pretend book :

Martin identified Derek Tague as one of the two fans who contributed to the
log
<snip>
but failed to identify himself as the other contributor.
But it would have been more appropriate and ethical if
<snip>
Martin disclosed his own interest in it as a contributor.

Can we be a little careful with these kinds of posts. I understand the
point but it may have had less to do with ethics and more in the way of not
tooting his own horn and avoiding the self promotion that we see a lot of on
this digest.

It's not as if OTR authors are making a fortune writing these books . It is
done more for the love of the hobby and should be received for the service
that
it truly is.

Therefore , I try to cut them all a little slack.

In the informal medium of a mailing list, I interpret Mr Grams actions in not
referring to his own contributions to a book, as modesty.

Anent LET'S PRETEND: I do have a hazy memory of Arthur [Anderson] remarking

Funny you should mention that. Anent one of my very earliest unhazy
memories from when I was growing up* I remember asking a couple of
little friends of mine one Saturday, "Did you listen to Cream of Wheat
this morning?" I thought the title of the show was "Cream of Wheat" --
which surely should have made the sponsor happy, although frankly I
couldn't stomach that hot lumpy cereal. Quite a few years later I was
reading a magazine article that mentioned the CBS program "Let's
Pretend" -- which I'd heard of but couldn't remember ever listening to
-- and its sponsor, and then it dawned on me "Oh, that was 'Cream of
Wheat'!"

Years pass again, and I am grown to manhood (more or less) and
collecting old-time radio shows. I get a tape of "Let's Pretend" and as
the show begins what do I hear Uncle Bill Adams say? "It's the Cream of
Wheat program -- 'Let's Pretend'." Aha! Now I see what confused my
five-year old mind. I probably thought that "let's pretend" was just the
phrase at the start of a story from the land of make-believe.

Subject: "Howie Wing" 1938 audio copies discovered!

Kathy Hammel, an OTR fan from Sherman Oaks, CA, and her husband
recently wandered into an old record
store during a trip to Sacramento. They'd gone in to look for a 45 rpm
plastic insert to show Kathy's young
nephew who'd never seen one. They did find an insert, but also came
away with three original disks
containing six 15 minute episodes of the popular 1938 aviator hero
series, "Howie Wing" of which no audio copies had ever surfaced in the
past 67 years!

The disks, transcribed by World Broadcast System for syndication under
the sponsorship of Kelloggs, were in fine condition, as was another
disk Kathy found at the same store which contained six cuts of some
short Kelloggs' cereal commercials from that era. The writer of the
"Howie Wing" series was Wilfred G. Moore, who with Robert Burtt, also
wrote "Air Adventures of Jimmie Allen" and "Captain Midnight."

Jerry Haendiges is now in the process of converting Kathy's discovery
to CDs, which Kathy will provide to the hobby through the OTR groups to
which she belongs. She will also provide an episode to Jim Widner,
which he will post on his web site for anyone's access.

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain

Anthony Tollin writes:

What's out there on Bill Johnstone at the moment is pretty sketchy, though I
did three long phone interviews with him that I've incorporated in a planned
book on THE SHADOW, a follow-up to THE SHADOW SCRAPBOOK.

It's nice that my pal Tony is doing a follow-up book, but what I'd like to
know
is if there is ever any chance of having the original "Shadow Scrapbook,"
co-written
by Walter Gibson and Anthony Tollin, re-issued. I saw a copy of the original
book from the late 1970s going for about $[removed] at the last FOTR. Will there
ever be a chance that this great tome will once again be made available to
newer
OTR fans at a more affordable, less collectible-oriented price? Or, do there
exist,
at present, any bureaucratic hang-ups with Conde' Nast [or whomever owns
"The Shadow"] that would prevent this from imminently happening?

The Buxton/Owen, Dunning, & Terrace texts have all seen recent updates and/or
re-releases. I wish I could say the same thing about "The Shadow Scrapbook,"
as
well as some of my other favourite OTR books , including:

--the two books of Paul Rhymer's "Vic 'n' Sade scripts: "The Best of Vic 'n'
Sade,"
and "The Little House Half-Way up on the Next Block."
--"The Jack Benny Show," by Milt Josephsberg, the best first -hand acciunt
about
said programme not only because it provides a linear history of the show, but
also
delves into the realm of theory as Mr. J explains Jack's comedic
techniques.
--the Fred Allen canon, viz. "Treadmill to Oblivion," "Much Ado ABout Me,"
and
"Fred Allen's Letters."
--all those books of light humour from the 1930 and 40s that F. Chase Taylor
wrote
as his alter-ego Colonel Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle.
--George W. Trendle's autobiography in which he overstates his part in taking
credit
for creating "The Lone Ranger"..only because Anthony had to pay an
astronomically
high price for a copy at the last FOTR.
--that big fat rectangular book about "The Lone Ranger" by Dave Holland.

Yours in the stacks,

Esoteric Derek
