At 10:07 AM -0500 2/24/06, Alan Bell is rumored to have typed:
The question, of course, is, when did those episodes
air and are they in circulation?
They didn't; at least not the way it's described in Freakonomics. The
series is "Clan of the Fiery Cross," which is readily available, and there is
a grand total of ONE "secret ritual" noted therein which I haven't been able
to verify as legitimate. If you listen to the storyline, you'll find the
writers went out of their way to obfuscate "passwords and rituals" that were
well known _before_ Kennedy's involvement - leaders were called by
intentionally fictitious names, etc. It's a powerful storyline, one of the
"intolerance" lines that has a speech given by one of the "clansmen" that
will curdle your blood and should be heard by every schoolchild today, but
I've been able to find no evidence the over-blown Super-effect first
mentioned in a 1947 New Republic article and embellished over the years ever
happened. This is NOT to minimize Kennedy's anti-Klan efforts, only the
Adventures of Superman connection.
Kennedy likely did share info with the Superman writers, but I'm betting
the information he shared with Drew Pearson had a whole lot more to do with
that particular chapter's downfall than the Superman series. When Kennedy was
interviewed on The Bob Edwards Show on XM, he too seemed to downplay the
Superman connection while mentioning some specifics that I could _not_ find
in the storyline (although the producer of the segmnent, Andy Danyo, did use
that one ritual piece in the show).
If you pull Volume 2005 Issue 333 from the archive server, you'll find an
interesting post by R. R. King documenting information in Pearson's column,
as well as some additional comments by yours truly.

I am wondering why it was necessary to do this.
The concern was that the studio audience would have an audible reaction,
an "Ohhhhhh!" or some such, and that such a reaction would disrupt the
flow of the scene. Asian actresses were uncommon enough in the 1940s that
the appearance of such a performer, especially in such an
uncharacteristic role, might be somewhat surprising for the average
audience member. So, Wong was introduced to the audience during the
pre-show warmup to ensure that they knew who she was.

Subject: Superman fights the Klan
Dear Alan,
I work for Radio Spirits and did some research on this very topic several
months ago when we were deciding on which episodes to include in our new
Superman collection. Unfortunately, these episodes didn't make it in - but,
here's what I came up with:
Superman had two story lines that deal with Ku Klux Klan-type groups:
1.) Clan of the Fiery Cross - individual episodes in this story line ran
from 06-10-46 through 07-01-46
2.) Knights of the White Carnation - individual episodes in this story line
ran from 02-26-47 through 03-17-47
Also, there was a story line called The Hate Mongers (episodes running from
04-16-46 through 05-20-46) that I don't think takes on any Klan-type groups,
but is obviously trying to raise awareness leading up to the Clan of the
Fiery Cross episodes.
On a related note, I'm familiar with a 9 episodes adventure called The Skin
Game - with episodes running from 04-02-48 through 04-14-48. This does not
deal with the Klan, but does have Jimmy Olsen in trouble with locals who want
to kill him because he refuses to kick two non-white kids off of the team
that he coaches. (This series did make it in to our new collection.)
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Karen Lerner

X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Radio Archives has released some episode of The Cisco Kid. Two of these were
Murder In Old San Juan and Porfirio and The Bearded Lady. These were released
with a broadcast date of 1953.
A radio database Otter gives a date of 02/13/58 for Porfiro and 02/11/58
for Old San Juan. In these episodes, Mel Blanc portrayed Porfirio,
"cousin-in-law" of Pancho filling in for Harry "Pancho" Lang who was ill. I
think the 1953 date is more accurate. Does anyone have more information on
this?

Not that I could help, but if someone could interpret what the
graduate student said:
"I'm interested in tracing the trajectory of the show as well as
the creation of "spatial" aural environments in detective radio."
I'd like to know what she is talking about.

Subject: partially-remembered plot
Back when I could get OTR broadcasts, I heard part of a show that I've
wondered about ever since.
An ordinary factory worker starts hearing, well, voices. I'm not sure which
order they came in, but in one incident his wife tells him to quit his
factory job, a move that is highly uncharacteristic. In another, he hears
the owner of the factory invite him to dinner, only to find out that no such
invitation was issued, and the boss throws him (and I guess his wife) out.
The only detail I recall is that he told the boss that his job in the
factory was to operate one of a 'Blanchard grinder' which is a fairly
obscure piece of metalworking machinery.
I always wondered how if he came out okay at the end. It was a pretty scary
show, and it's quite possible that I didn't listen to the rest of it for
that reason. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hi folks,
I'm searching for Bill Cosby material. Especially his syndicated
five-minute-shows from 1968. Any format
will do, except mp3. Ready to pay for good copies.

PS, This is probably not considered OTR but I hope Charlie allows it anyway!
