Folks;

I urge all of you to review my rather bloated blog entry at:

[removed]

...which concerns Press Releases sent to the Digest, and why they are not
permitted on the Digest, and frankly completely unnecessary to let Digest
subscribers know about your book/event/whatever. Comments may be left
publically on the blog, or sent privately directly to me; please do NOT
comment on this to the Digest, thanks.

Subject: radio listing

I've pored over a lot of newspaper microfilm and I've never seen
a radio guide insert. Mostly, depending on the newspaper's
publishing cycle, you see maybe a day or a day-and-a-half's worth
of listings ... some papers that didn't publish on a Saturday or
a Sunday would print the schedule for the day they weren't
delivered.

I'm not sure about a weekly radio guide like the current weekly TV guide
you find in most Sunday papers but I found this site which has the
newspaper radio programs listed out for the major cities of NY, Chicago,
Washington, and LA. Interesting to browse through them.

Not sure when it began, but the New York Times published a weekly radio
listing day by day on Sundays. Then continued to publish a daily guide
for each day also. I know they are listed weekly beginning as early as
January 1930 in the NY Times. The other major newspapers also did not
seem to publish weekly as best as I can tell. You can see examples at
JJ's Log page:

Subject: Re: Sitcom

Has anyone defined exactly what a sitcom really is? In my humble opinion,
radio sitcom's would include shows like, The Life of Riley. The Great
Gildersleeve. Burns, and Allen. Blondie, and Dagwood, etc. In other words,
any show
that involved a family on an ongoing basis every week. For me at least, the
line begins to get a little fuzzy with shows like, Fibber, and Molly. Amos,
and
Andy. Jack Benney, simply because, other than a somewhat regular cast of
characters, there is no set home, or office, life. For instance. Fibber, and
Molly. Although it's true they are most generally home, there is no real set
pattern to the program, other than, the same cast of characters wandering
in, and
out from one week to the next. I guess what I am trying to say is, with a
show like The Life of Riley, it's the same cast of characters depicting a
weekly crises, and in most cases, resolving that crises in the same program.
There
have been some story lines that require more than one episode to resolve,
but for the most part, problems are resolved in one episode. To me, Jack, and
Fibber are more comedy variety shows. I'm probably all wet here, and would
welcome any comments on this train of thought.

Now. The question about radio listings of programs. You bet there were
listings. Newspapers used to list radio programs before the networks gave up
on
radio broadcasting. these listings were being printed as early as the late
60's
that I can recall. Maybe even the early 70's. Daily TV listings have gone
the way of the dinosaur, and are now printed in a weekly magazine that
arrives
in our local paper in the Friday edition.

Thanks for listening

Charlie

Subject: Uncirculating 16" Discs For Sale

If you are interested in collecting 16" transcription discs read on.
Otherwise skip to the next post.

I have a group of 20 discs that I thought I would offer here first before I
go the usual route. If you would like to get a list just email me at
otrsteve@[removed] and I will send you an attachment in rtf format
as the list is in a table. These are all AFRS and I'm certain there are at
least two programs that are currently not in circulation. I checked with
Jerry H.'s logs (he seems to have everything :--))) and both of these shows
are listed as unavailable. Casey Crime Photographer - Woman of Mystery
11/9/50, and the Big Story - Sam Melnick Story 1/4/50.

For those of you who feel the need to begin collecting and transferring
discs I will be selling my turntable and Esoteric Sound Re-equalizer very
soon.
