Subject: Death Valley Days

I remember listening to Death Valley Days back in the 1940's,. A fading,
forlorn bugle call, heralded announcer Dresser Dahlstead's simple
announcement: "As the early-morning bugle-call of covered wagon trains fades
away among the echoes, another true Death Valley Days story is presented for
your entertainment . . . ." Death Valley Days was first broadcast on Sept.
30, 1930. The last broadcast was March 23, 1951. After more than 20 years on
radio, it appears that only 4 episodes are circulating. These episodes are:
1) 360827 Sam Bass; 2) 380617 The Burro That Had No Name; 3) 390616 Shoo
Fly; and 4) xxxxxx Dear Teacher. Anyone aware of more Death Valley Days
episodes in circulation?

Subject: Re: John Brown's Radio Roles

Hello again --

In answer to Dominick Cancilla's request for a list of roles John Brown
played on the radio, Thomas DeLong's "Radio Stars" (1996) mentions that he
played Ozzie Nelson's neighbor Thornberry (in addition to Riley's neighbor
Gillis and Digby O'Dell, of course), Judy's father in "A Date with Judy,"
Broadway, the narrator of "Damon Runyon Theater," various roles on "Maisie,"
Irma's boss on "My Friend Irma," and Falstaff Openshaw (I think that was his
name) on the Fred Allen show. DeLong also mentions roles on "The Shadow" and
"Lincoln Highway." By Brown's own estimate, he played on over 10,000 live
shows and 5,000 ETs. And let's now forget his bit roles in the movies:
"Strangers on a Train" and "Hans Christian Anderson" come to mind.

Now that someone has located a book about "The Whistler",
does anyone know if there is a book about "The Mysterious Traveler"?

Though there is a book by Eidmiller and Lambesis about "Quiet Please",
I wonder if another one has been written or is in progress? One that
covers the program in more detail?

Subject: Cincinnati 2011 Convention

Well, the 2011 Cincinnati convention is over, all too soon.

Though Bob Hastings was unable to attend due to illness, and Ed Clute
couldn't come because his transportation fell through, the convention was
fantastic.

The re-creations were super, with Esther Geddes McVey and Rosemary Rice in
top form. The audience-member amateurs who took the other roles were,
without exception, superb.

The shows presented this year were Gunsmoke (I was the murderer), The
Whistler, Green Hornet, Life of Riley, and an absolutely hilarious Dragnet.
Donald Ramlow's directing was top-flight, and I wish everyone could have been
there to experience it all.

The Second Annual Trivia Bowl was won by a team calling themselves The
Burchett Quartet (Bob Burchett is the Big Kahuna of the convention),
consisting of Jim Beshires, Travis Conner, Don Frey, and Ryan Ellett.

And as always, the convention can be best summed up as (kudos to
conventioneer Frank Boncore for this quote) "a family reunion for people who
aren't related." The informality and friendliness of all the attendees made
for a warm and wonderful two days.

There are plenty of photos and more reports from conventioneers at the Cincy
Convention website at:

If you were at the convention, please post a note there with your
observations.
