CLASSICS & CURIOS

"Echoes of Songs and Laughter"

Episode 31

Eddie Hubbard & the Browsers: "Sound Off" for "Shoo-Fly Pie"

Back we go in Eddie Hubbard's Archives for another fun session with
the Browsers, just as it aired in 1992. Bands include Benny Goodman,
Vaughn Monroe, Stan Kenton, Bob Crosby, and Red Nichols & His 5 Pennies
Among performers we'll hear Julie Christie, Kitty Kallen, Bob Eberle,
Buddy Clark, and, of course, a Crosby named Bob. Some recordings this
time are "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Besame Mucho," "Sound Off,"
"Mission to Moscow," "Poor Butterfly," "I'm Living in a Great Big Way,"
"I Had Someone Before I Had You," and "Shoo-Fly Pie."

You, too, can take the big band trivia challenge with questions like,
"What was the original title of Vaughn Monroe's hit recording of "Sound
Off?" Or, can you name the ingredients for "Shoo-Fly Pie" and where in
the [removed] did it originate? How about naming some big bands from Great
Britain! (And, yes, we'll try to play some of those British bands at a
later date.) Also, instead of commercials we can listen to wonderful
songs like "Night Train" and one of my Mother's favorites from 1918,
"I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles." As with earlier broadcasts of "The
Browsers" on Jerry's network, please be patient with Phil Holdman's
closing "Phooler" question. We'll try to answer it later as we further
explore over 100 of Eddie Hubbard's studio master tapes, which were not
catalogued in sequence by Eddie. So, now, let's enjoy another "long
lost" broadcast of "Eddie Hubbard and the Browsers!"

Subject: Radio Yesteryear

At a library saleI acquired some cassettes from Radio Yesteryear, Box C,
Sandy Hook, CT 06482. The set is dated l992 and has 12 cassettes. They are a
mixture of Jack Benny, Fred Allen and Fibber McGee and Molly. The numbers on
the cassettes appear to be random and there is a note on the cover: Ex
Libris Radio: (a person's name)

Did this company put out special orders? Could one ask for certain shows?

Some school district in CA is now using Radio Yesteryear and "The Best of Old
Time Radio" on a site with that name and mentions a station - KCEA.

Perhaps someone on the list can provide some history on this company?

Subject: Ray Bradbury and "Suspense"

Among the recent posts concerning the death of Ray Bradbury, I was pleased to
see one from Sam Irvin, whose biography of Kay Thompson added some valuable
insights to the evolution of "Suspense." There is an article about radio's
outstanding theater of thrills in the new Summer issue of Nostalgia Digest
that
touches upon some of Mr. Bradbury's many "contributions." Personally, I think
the 1955 production of "Zero Hour" is one of the most terrifying 25 minutes in
all of radio.
