Subject: Radio Recall

The February 2009 issue of Radio Recall is enroute to the printer and
will be delivered to subscribers (their choice of PDF or hard copy)
very soon. This issue leads off with the story of the tragic endings
of two lovely people, Joe "Wanna buy a duck" Penner and his wife,
Eleanor. Next, Norman Cox (no relation to Jim) discusses the
propaganda of Mildred Gillars, whose Nazi broadcasts earned her the
nickname of "Axis Sally" and eventually put her in a federal prison
in West Virginia.

Two recent and prominent OTR books are reviewed: Mark Anderson
reviews Jim Cox's "This Day in Network Radio" while OTR historian and
collector, David Siegel, reviews the two volume set (2nd edition) of
Luther F. Sies, "Encyclopedia of American Radio, 1920-1960." Part 2
of the career summary of Bill Stern, entitled "Even His Initials Were
[removed]" also appears in this February issue.

Subject: Re: Trivia Challenge!

There are several "Quiet Please" episodes about a man obsessing over an
idealized woman (for some reason, it's a favorite theme of author Wyllis
Cooper) but I don't think any have a plot exactly like the one you describe.
Usually, the protagonist wants very much to make contact but is kept apart
from his true love until the story's end.

If you heard a "Quiet Please" episode with this theme in the 1970s, though,
then that narrows it down considerably because most of the surviving episodes
weren't available then. My best guess is that you're looking for "And Jeannie
Dreams of Me," a beautiful and very striking script. Other romantic episodes
that were available at that time included "The Little Morning" and
"Valentine."

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about "The Adventures
of Sherlock Holmes"? If so, please help! I've been trying to find episode
dates for a case that was sent to me named "The Yastley Case". I've
asked as many people and resources as I happen to know, including "The
Sherlock Holmes Museum in London, with no luck. I'm almost certain that
it was broadcast under a different title and renamed, but don't know what the
original title was.

If there is anyone out there who knows what the original title of this
case
was and/or what the episode date(s) happened to be, please contact me
off list.

Subject: Presidential Radio Address'

President Obama is apparently continuing the radio only address' on Saturday
morning, the tradition started by an otr radio president, Ronald Reagan in
1981. However, I was thinking that radio only speeches by presidents do not
go back as far as we might think, to the pre-television era.

Did not Richard Nixon have longer, "policy" speeches for radio only, into
the 70's? I seem to remember as a youth that Nixon would have a 45 minute to
perhaps more than an hour at a time to elucidate further on what might be
too mundane for television.

Is my memory correct on this? Was Nixon the last president to really use
radio often, and for purposes other than just "throwing one to the radio
boys"?
