A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

When I published the first edition of 39 Forever back in 1989, someone turned
around and plagiarized a substantial part of it shortly thereafter. Obviously
this was before wide use of the Internet, but it was still very upsetting to
see someone else cashing in on my own research and writing. I wanted to
pursue legal action, but I was only 20 and still living and home, and my
parents had no stomach for footing IJBFC legal bills.
I have even had someone urge me to speed up on publication of Volume 3
(television) of the second edition of 39 Forever, because they wanted to start
copying all the information into IMDB. What's up with that?!?! I mean, I
guess it's their typing time to transcribe it, but like Martin said, I'm
spending a good chunk of time and change to go out and get this material.
Hurry up and work, because I want to give it away for free! It will probably
end up there eventually anyway, but it felt pretty insulting.
A few times I have seen people copy material directly out of The Jack Benny
Times and publish it here on the OTR Digest as their own (one that comes to
mind is the story of Stuart Canin's appearance on the 12/30/36 Town Hall
Tonight [removed] just the text of what was broadcast, but my own original
narrative that wove around it). I wouldn't have had a problem if the person
had asked me beforehand or given me credit, but it didn't happen. Like
Elizabeth, this is part of the reason you've seen less of me here for a while.
A lot of people don't value what they can get for free, or simply steal.

Subject: Empire Builders radio series
I've been a subscriber to this digest for about a year. I truly appreciate
all the knowledge I've gained on a variety of old time radio topics. I'd like
to share what my particular interest is in OTR, and make a general appeal for
help and information.
As much as I enjoy OTR in general, my sole purpose for participating here is
to aid my research into a single OTR program: "Empire Builders", which aired
from January 1929 to June 1931. This show was sponsored by the Great Northern
Railway and was broadcast by NBC, first out of New York City and then,
starting in September 1930, from the Merchandise Mart studios in Chicago.
I'm a member of the Great Northern Railway Historical Society, so naturally
I'm approaching this topic from the angle of a railroad enthusiast. Unlike
most of my fellow GN Railway fans, however, I am not very interested in
locomotives and such. I'm far more interested in what a lot of railfans
consider to be "human interest" topics, such as the "Empire Builders" radio
show.
I'm familiar with the only known recordings of the shows, namely the 9 sound
checks made in late 1930 and early 1931. I've also gained excellent
information from various internet sources, such as the information posted by
Rich Samuels and Mr. King. So far, my research has taken me to the Library of
American Broadcasting (where Michael Henry of this group was a big help to me
- Thanks Mike!), the Library of Congress, and the GN company archives in St.
Paul, MN.
I have lots of questions to ask, but for starters, I could use some advice on
the holdings of the Library of Congress. I have another opportunity to go
there in early May, but just for one day. Their NBC Finding Aid is very
helpful, but I have very little time there on this trip. I'm hoping to locate
some continuities (scripts), and the finding aid suggests they have a lot of
this type of material on microfilm from WEAF and WJZ. The "Empire Builders"
show was broadcast from these two stations for the first two seasons. If
anyone in this group has accessed those microfilm records, can you tell me if
that's a realistic place to look for copies of the continuities (circa 1929
and 1930)? And if so, do their microfilm readers have the capability to print
screen shots, or save them to a researcher's thumb drive, or both?
BTW, I did read the helpful comments from Elizabeth McLeod on the FAQ page (
[removed]#Answer34 ). I do not expect to locate any
pertinent audio recordings there, however.
Another resource that I am keenly interested in locating would be any photos
(likely, press release photos) of the actors, studios, sound effects, etc.,
associated with the show. Are there any particularly helpful resources of
such photos anywhere? I'd even be interested in photos of a more generic
nature, such as depicting the NBC studios in New York in the 1929-1930 era,
and the Merchandise Mart studios in Chicago circa 1930-31. Photos of the
individual performers will also be valuable. Some of the featured performers
included: Harvey Hays, Virginia Gardiner, Bernardine Flynn, Bob White, Betty
White (no, not that Betty White), Andy Sanella (bandleader and musician), and
Bob MacGimsey (incredible 3-part harmony whistler). This program also helped
launch the career of Don Ameche. One of their regular announcers was Ted
Pearson. Key personalities not heard over the air included writers [removed]
Bierstadt and [removed] Cooper, and Don Bernard and Niles Trammel of NBC. Are
there any NBC photograph archives that might yield photos of any of these
people or topics?
If you have information to share that might be of general interest to the
whole group, a public reply here would be great. Otherwise, please feel free
to contact me directly at this address.
Thanks!

Subject: Vital Stats on Sandra Michael
On 4-11-10 David Siegel issued a plea for information regarding the
birth and death of Sandra Michael, prominent author of daytime
serials (one of which, "Against the Storm") won a Peabody Award.
I am pleased to announce that some OTR teamwork has located all the
necessary data. Our team consisted of computer-whiz Irene Heinstein
in the San Francisco area, Michael Henry, staff member of Library of
American Broadcasting, U of M, College Park, MD (which archives the
Sandra Michael collection) and yours truly in Fairfax, VA. Our
results are set forth below, and have been forwarded to the Keeper of
OTR Stats, Ron Sayles in Milwaukee:
Born: Anna Marie Mikkelsen, May 20. 1906, Vejlby, Aarhus, Denmark
(about 115 miles from Copenhagen)
Died: Anna Marie Gibbs, August 22, 2003, Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego, CA
NOTE: Gibbs was her married name; her professional name was Sandra
Michael. She died at age 97.

I think it is great to pay tribute to those who worked hard trying to find
important information about shows and construct accurate logs from a sea of
recordings. However, one needs to be realistic. It's silly to expect to
receive never ending attribution for basic information like episode titles and
air dates. How many techniques shown in math textbooks were originated by
someone who never receives credit. Knowledge, especially very basic
knowledge, has a life of its own. Someone who seeks their own immortality
through OTR should write a book. Unless there are multiple works on a single
show (usually unlikely), true fans of the show will always seek out that
book. Otherwise, the real reward from research should be increasing others
fondness for something that one loves. BTW: Elizabeth has a stronger case
as the market for a book was weakened by others actions.
