Fellow Rocketeers:

should lead you to an interview on NPR's "Fresh Air" interview show. It
concerns what they call "border blasters," the high-powered radio stations
originally set up by Dr Brinkley of goat gland fame on the Mexican border to
skirt FCC and other troublesome regulations. The book sounds like it might
be interesting to read.

Subject: the "border stations"

Yesterday on "fresh air" on npr I heard the last part of an interview about
a book called "border stations". I have read about these before. Because
the fcc limited power output for us stations some people went across the
mexican border and built stations with several fold the power of us
stations which could reach much of the country. Many us performeers
recorded, on disk apparently, their programs and the transcriptions were
taken to the stations for broadcast. The part of the interview I heard was
about some of the personalities on these stations with some on air clips.
I don't recall ever hearing one of these stations and assume that at some
time they stopped their multiple power broadcasting. Can anyone discuss
them and what happened to them and about the programing hey had?

Last Night at the "Billy Rose":

Thursdays are always great at the New York Public Library for the Performing
Arts
at Lincoln Center--Billy Rose Theatre Collection (Third Floor), or as I
affectionately
abbreviate it, "Billy Rose." Thursdays are the one night where it's opened
late--until
8 PM, and I can usually get in a couple of hours research time after work.

Currently at this branch of the NYPL,, in the Bruno Walter Auditorium, there's
an
exhibit celebrating the heyday of "Disco," replete with museum quality
exhibits
that include gold records and some of Donna Summers's costumes. There's a
small glass case containing a handful of disco-dancing instructional books
including one titled "Disco! Disco! Disco!" by an author named Ronald W.
Lackmann.

Is that OUR Ron Lackmann, celebrated OTR-era actor and author? I'm currently
reading his book about comic strips and comic books which were adapted to
radio. Ben Ohmart & his Bear Manor Media publish it [removed] .

Secondly, while spending some down-time waiting for my call-slips to be
filled,
I was perusing Vincent Terrace's OTR encyc, where I read that "Uncle Don"
Carney,
at one time, had an announcer named Joe Bolton. Is this the same Joe Bolton
who worked for many years at WPIX-TV here in NYC, most notably as "Officer
Joe"
Bolton, the one-time host of "the Three Stooges" afternoon programme?

Finally, unrelated to B. Rose, I'd like to know if there ever has existed a
radio station
with the call letters WOTW. I know we OTR types relish our jargon such as
"WOTW,"
insider-speak for Orson Welles's "The War of the World," but I'd like to know
if some-
where, there's a WOTW-AM, or -FM. Does anybody maintain a "call letter"
database.

Yours always in the ether,

Derek Tague

Subject: "That Hammer Guy"

I heard recently about an OTR program called
"That Hammer Guy". All that I was told was that it
was an OTR detective series. Was this based on any
of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer detective series?
Any details would be appreciated. Are there any of
CD's or cassettes of this program currently available?

Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide.

Another OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Name That Tune

Can anyone name the tune AFRS used at the end of the
21st Precinct shows it aired? When I heard AFN in
Germany in the 70s it seems like they might have
played it at the end of other shows as well.
Thanks.
