Subject: decoder badges
The mention of decoder badges reminded me of a quick story. 20 years
ago, my wife and I bought an 85 year old house (it's now 105). A few years
ago my daughter brought some of her friends over with metal detectors and
they went on a treasure hunt in the yard. Besides hot wheel cars and the
usual bric-a-brac, they came up with a real treasure. A 1939 Little Orphan
Annie decoder pin. Although it had been buried for 70+ years, it was still in
working order. What a find.

Hi all,
I've been on this list just about as long as I've had a computer--I got my
first DOS computer in 1993.
I just really wanted to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New
year.
I still get a huge kick out of getting the Digest and sttil seeing so many
names that were here when I joined the list.
Thanks for all being here and helping to keep this great Old-time radio
hobby going.
Thanks Charlie for all you do to keep this list going.
Bill

Ah my Favorite time to listen to OTR.
Like so many others I love the Benny shows, Fibber McGee and Molly, and
George and Gracie.
I also find time for The Cinnamon Bear, Ozzie and Harriet too.
. One that I haven't seen mentioned was The Radio City Players' Twas the
Night Before Christmas. My Favorite version of the Amos and Andy Christmas
show is the 1950 version. It was one of the first shows I ever owned back
when I was 15 and in high school.
I turned 60 in March. I guess I shouldn't forget Phil Harris's Christmas
shows either, or Our Miss Brookes.
Many of the Family Theater Christmas shows as well--The littlest Angel was
mentioned, and that's a great one.
Alright I'll shut up now.

Subject: alcohol advertising and Prohibition
Leslie Feagan said:
I was wondering if there were shows sponsored by
alcoholic beverages that had to quickly find new sponsors when Prohibition
was enacted.
Radio could hardly talk and wasn't of drinking age when National Prohibition
came along in 1920 and there were all sorts of state laws restricting
alcohol sales before then, so - admittedly without checking - I'd say there
were no such advertisers on radio then. After Prohibition, broadcasters .
policing themselves . restricted advertising to beer and wine. On
television, no one was to be seen in commercials actually taking a sip of
either. For years, the Adolph Coors commercials didn't even show people on
the verge of enjoying the product - just pictures of the Rocky Mountains and
cascading water, because the beer was made from "Rocky Mountain spring
water."

Prohibition took effect in the United States in January 1920. Since
this was well before the start of commercial broadcasting, I doubt it.
