Subject: The Hermit Of San Filippe Atabapo
Does anybody have a decent sounding copy of I Love a Mystery's "The
Hermit Of San Filippe Atabapo"? I have two copies, both wretched. One
is veerrryyyy slllooowwww. The other is correct speed, but sounds like
it was taken from an 80th generation tape. I know a lot of the ILAMs in
circulation are not in perfect sound, but I'm hoping this one is
available in something better. I'm generally willing to struggle
through a bit of noise for a good show (as in, for example, Quiet
Please), but I've had to throw in the towel on this one. All of the
other mostly complete ILAM stories are in listenable sound--hopefully
this one exists as well?
Please contact me off-list if you've got anything I can buy or trade or
whatever.
Thanks,
Kermyt

Subject: SPERDVAC October 13 guest
Hi all,
SPERDVAC's guest speaker at the Saturday, October 13 meeting will be
violinist/conductor STUART CANIN. You may remember, Stuart Canin was the 8
year old violinist who played "The Bee" on the Fred Allen Show which started
the biggest (and funniest) radio "feud" of all time; Benny vs. Allen.
Mr Canin will share his memories with us at the SPERDVAC meeting at the
Community Room, located in the 1000 block of El Centro in South Pasadena,
CA.
The meeting is FREE and open to the public.
See you there!

Subject: Re: OTR and Old Radios
On 10/11/2007 Travis wrote:
Unfortunately, there isn't as much interaction between the old radio set
and old radio show hobby as one might expect; they're pretty distinct hobbies.
The two sides cross at very few places. There are many amateur radio
operators and ex broadcast engineers who read OTR Digest, but that
seems to be about it. I don't see old radio program recordings
offered at old radio marts and I presume there are few old radios
offered at OTR marts. There is one great difference between the
groups--there is no modern way to cheat receiver technology in the
way computers do for broadcast content. For that reason there are
fewer young people drawn to the hardware side of the hobby and no get
rich quick opportunists. If you want an old radio, you buy one that
is restored (not at an antique store) or buy one that you can restore yourself.
Most people who enjoy listening to old radio shows would enjoy
hearing those shows through an old radio. Few radios today produce
the same sound an old radio makes. The SSTRAN AM transmitter Travis
mentions is a very good way to get the signal to a radio. You can
connect a cheap DVD player to the input and play an MP3 disc
continuously. This is, however, an electronic kit, so one way or
another, you will probably get into the hardware side of things. You
might find someone to build it for you if you have doubts. Here is a
review on the kit that provides a perspective on what you're in for
if you decide to build one.

One more point. You need a moderate wattage soldering gun
(trigger-type, dual heat) to work on old radios, but do not use one
of these guns on a modern circuit board such as the SSTRAN
transmitter. For this work you need a lower wattage soldering iron
(pencil-type). The SSTRAN manual includes some tips on soldering for
the inexperienced and there are probably many pages about soldering
on the Internet.
For those who prefer an easy out: There are a couple of decent
modern radios. I have some and of the lot prefer the Grundig S350
which was available from Radio Shack and Amazon. It has the advantage
that it has separate bass and treble controls and a reasonably deep
sound. Some people like the GE (now RCA) Superadio.
There are a few FM transmitters intended to be used in the car
connected to an MP3 player or Ipod. All of these transmit in stereo
and most don't do this very well, but if the FM radio you use is a
mono radio or can be switched to mono, it will sound good. The one I
use is no longer available, but I see many brands on Amazon. The
little transmitter can be connected to the audio or headphone output
of your computer or DVD MP3 player and you can "broadcast" from your
computer or audio player of choice. The distance you can get varies,
but 50 feet is what I get.
It is simpler to buy an FM transmitter than to build the SSTRAN. The
SSTRAN is a quality piece of gear with audio compression and limiter
controls and the only inexpensive way I know to broadcast an AM
signal to an old radio.

Subject: Broadway a Beat
Who is right 's or is well I went in my vault and dusted of 3 or 4
episodes of Larry Thor's police drama and listened to episode # 2 .
7/21/49, #15 12/24/49 & #188 10/28/53. At the beginning of each episode
Larry Thor Says "Broadway's My Beat from Times Square to Columbus
Circle" After theme music the announce, Bill Anders comes in and says
"Broadway's my beat with Larry Thor as Danny Clover" all the shows I
listened to says BROADWAY'S . At he end when the case is solved Larry
say dramatically says "Broadway, my beat. The announcer at the closing
repeats " Broadway's My Beat." all very dramatic.
In my data base and all my labels on my cassettes, the program is
"BROADWAY IS MY BEAT" be cause all the reference material and Logs
showed that way. Either way the title is the same. Now out of curiosity,
I wonder how the original the scripts had it? Did the actor and
announcer take liberties with the name of the program?
I'm sure I didn't settle any thing , but I enjoyed hearing 3 episodes on
cool cloudy Fall afternoon.

BBC 7 is running the 1990s recreations of the Marx Brothers' (mostly) lost
Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel series again. As per usual with the Beeb each
program is available by streaming audio for one week after broadcast.

Subject: RE: Halloween & vintage sets
Your use of old radios to receive AM low power transmitter (programs)
reminds me of my conversion of an old Victrola
record player. The Victrola has an elbow which attaches to the record
needle and "pipes" that lead to the large horn.
I installed a small speaker (approx 1-1/2" in diameter) in the elbow
area at a point the inside diameter was the same size.
Next, I used a tape player output to the speaker. Now, you could do the
same with a CD or mp3 player. The media has
either old cylinder music or OTR programs. The more noise in the
program, the better! I have saved my old records being
worn by repeated playing. And, this is a safe way to use AC power
without conversions, or repairs.
Dick.

Subject: Re: Broadway's (Is) My Beat
I asked the people at the Mort Fine collection at UCLA to look at some
scripts to see how the scriptwriters titled their stories.
Unfortunately, it was a toss up. Here is their reply:
" I've checked boxes 9-11 of the Mort Fine Papers (Collection 347). The
title of the series appears as both "Broadway is my beat" and
"Broadway's my beat" on various title pages of the scripts, which date
from 1949-1952."
So it looks like either title is correct.

WHO'S WHO IN "THE SHADOW":
I've been enjoying the ongoing Kent Allard/Lamont Cranston discussion. John
Olsen posted
In the pulps, we had all The Shadow's main secret agents: Moe Shrevnitz,
Clyde Burke, Harry Vincent, Cliff Marsland and Hawkeye. We had his
contact men: Claude Fellows (soon replaced by Rutledge Mann) and
Burbank. <snip>
John went on to mention more of the Shadow's friends, confidants, and
law-enforcement [removed] two dozen in total. Ir seems to me that
this prevailing "can't tell the players without a scorecard" scenario is
crying out for a new book "The Shadow Encyclopaedia."
BROADWAY'S NOT MY BEAT:
Harlan Zinck, Don Haefele, and others make an overwhelming case that the show
I've come to love, "Broadway Is My Beat," was officially titled "Broadway's My
Beat." Bummer. This is such a "Thor" point with me and totally screws up the
haiku I wrote in tribute to it:
"Broadway is my beat:
Times Square, Columbus Circle,
And points in between."
Cue the theme music "I'll Take Manhattan." Oops, I forgot, that song's title
is officially "Manhattan."
PHASED-OUT CHARACTERS:
Charlie (Cnorth6311) noted that many main characters on "The Great
Gildersleeve" were later marginalised. I think the classic text-book example
of this it the minimal part "Amos Jones" played in later epiosodes of "Amos
'n' Andy." True, George "Kingfish" Stevens was a more interesting character
for Freeman Gosden to portray, but I think the responsibilities of providing
for a family kept Amos largely out of the picture. He was too busy driving his
cab and just didn't have time to horse around with Andy and the Kingfish.
FOTR:
I'll be there.
Yours in the ether,
Derek Tague
