Subject: Paul Rubin--Collectibles Dealer, and
[removed]
A couple of years ago, I meant to write about the passings of Mike
Woodin and Ray Pence, two of the original crew at Jerry Ohlinger's Movie
Material store, that great photo and poster and occasionally book store,
that has existed in New York City, for roughly thirty-five years. I knew
it would be necessary to explain the importance of that store--and such
other places as the once-long-ago Cinemabilia, and others--in days gone
past. Because before the internet, Jerry's, and places like it, were the
ONLY place you could go, to get film, TV and theatre stuff.
Jerry Ohlinger's, for years on West 4th Street, just up the block from
NYU and since, in a couple of locations, could be jammed with folks
poring through volumes of photos (stills we called them, and often,
still do). In fact, for years, Jerry was a go-to source for many of the
network news and local entertainment shows that would suddenly a classic
shot of a performer.
And then there were the guys who helped supply the movie, theatre and
other collectables dealers.
I must have met Paul Rubin in the mid-80s, although we had probably been
around each other, before that. Paul would show up at some of the movie
and comics shows, with various goodies to sell, lobby cards, [removed]
Small of frame, skinny, close cropped hair, beard or moustahce, with a
raspy [removed] Paul could seem like a character, but in my experience,
was almost always pleasant, and filled with cheer.
I knew he had hung around Hollywood in the late '60s, but kind of rolled
my eyes when he said he used to hang out with Larry Fine of the 3
Stooges. (I mean, why would Larry be having a coffee or a beer with a
20-year old?)
But when I found out that Larry, in fact, by the late '60s, did often
spend his afternoons simply going out with friends, or fans who would
soon become [removed] I've meant for over ten years to call Paul up,
and get his memories of Fine on the record. Now, that's a fun bit of pop
history that's lost.
(Which is yet another reminder not to procrastinate anything.)
Paul passed away at the end of last December, and many of us who knew
him only as an acquaintance are only finding out now.
When I went to Google Paul, to see if there were any details about his
life that I could include in the mentioning of him I planned to write--
There was a shock.
Because it turned out for much of the second half of the 1960s, Paul was
a PUPPETEER, hanging out at the legendary New York kids TV show hosted
by Chuck McCann (and occasionally geting to operate those marvelous Paul
Ashley puppets), appearing on THE JOE FRANKLIN SHOW, and putting
together a stage act that performed all over New York City, and its
boroughs.
It's entirely possible, in the way such kids shows would be booked (then
and now, come to think of it), that there are folks now in their forties
walking around town, whose first encounter with a play of any kind--a
live performance--was a play starring Paul and his characters.
The memory of those shows is linked below. It's even more stunning to
me, personally, because it's written by a puppeteer I've known for ten
years. There was never any reason for it to come up that we BOTH knew
Paul, our first introductions seperated by a couple of decades.
I don't know what happened to Paul's performance aspirations. But the
lovely tribute written by his longtime friend is also a reminder never
to take anyone for granted, and that the most unexpected people can have
the most extraordinary pasts.
It's also a lovely glimpse into a past that just no longer exists, that
world also populated by Sandy Becker, and Carol Corbett, back when all
so many of us, were but [removed]

Hi all. Maybe this is or isn't the best place for this, but I wanted to
assure everyone that the wife and I and her family are just fine. We're in
Japan, but Kyoto is a long way from the devastation, thank god. We didn't
feel anything here. So don't worry about us or BearManor Media. Just pray for
those incredible people without homes, family, lives. It's unbelievable
what's happening here in Japan now.
Thanks for all the good wishes that have poured in.

From Those Were The Days
3/13
1923 A great improvement in radio receivers was advertised. The new
models had a concealed speaker and eliminated the need for headphones,
which were considered a nuisance because they were so heavy to wear and
messed up hairdos. The new radios were also said to have a 'foolproof'
design.
3/14
1937 Fred Allen and Jack Benny met in one of the biggest publicity
gags ever. It was called, "The Battle of the Century." The two
comedians locked horns in the ballroom of the Hotel Pierre, exchanging
torrid insults that were heard by the second largest audience in the
history of radio.
3/17
1933 Comedian Phil Baker was heard on network radio for the first time
on a regular basis when The Armour Jester was heard on the Blue network.
Baker rapidly rose to the top of the radio ratings.
3/18
1940 Light of the World was first heard on NBC. The soap opera was
unique in that it featured the Bible as the center of the story line.
