(Double all of this if you assume 64kps recordings).

Sure, but keep in mind that FM radio, with all of it's issues is about the
same as 96kbps, so why you'd settle for any less than that is beyond me.

Ron,

She's on your 7/27 death list, without a birth date.
According to her obit, she was age 67 when she died, so
born ca. 1889. No trace of her in familysearch. She was
Mrs. Elmer Pearson at the time of her death; her husband
had died earlier ([removed]).

Subject: Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg

A few issues ago Jack Franch highlighted Aviva Kempner's new movie,
"Yoo-Hoo, Mrs Goldberg". I went to see the movie at the Avalon in DC last
week and was surprised at how poorly the film handled Gertrude Berg's radio
work.
Way back on February 17, 2000, the redoubtable Elizabeth McLeod posted
a long "Retroviews" article on the Goldbergs in this very digest. She
pointed out that the radio program was losing listeners in 1934 and moved
the Goldberg family to a farming community in upstate New York--Lastonbury
by name. Between 1934 and 1937 the program was off the air except for a
brief 1936 revival. When it returned it took the format of a standard soap
opera in small town Lastonbury until 1945 or so. It left the airwaves soon
after and was revived as a radio adjunct to the TV series--back in the Bronx
setting the family left in 1934.
None of this is mentioned in the film, although one radio clip has a
character mentioning a "village" activity, which must have baffled the
viewers.
Once again radio takes it on the chin. Seeing the film one would think
the Goldbergs spent their entire radio life in their Bronx apartment.
Speaking of Elizabeth McLeod, has anyone heard from her lately? She was
a major, dare I say irreplaceable, contributor to this Digest.

As I understand it, Tony asked where OTR authors have been publishing other
than in the OTR field. Prior to publication of my OTR book WORDS AT WAR
(Scarecrow Press, 2002), two of my translations from Russian lit were
published in An Anthology of Russian Literature (Nicholas Rzhevsky ed.).
Since publication of WAW I have been doing some journalism and I'm in the
process of completing a memoir, provisionally titled My Cossack: A Memoir of
Identity

Subject: 1946 - good taste returns to radio

>From the Jan 20, 1946 New York Times:

The National Broadcasting Company, through Clarence Menser, vice president in
charge of programs, has cautioned program managers of its owned and operated
stations to guard against inclusion of suggestive or off-color material in
comedy programs, it was learned last week. Mr. Menser was understood to have
noted that during the war years, when many shows originated in Army camps,
standards in joke material tended to be less rigid, but that with the return
of emphasis on home listening there should be no deviation from good taste

Jim Harmon invited me to write a story for "It's that time again 3." My
story combines "Just plain Bill" with "Halls of Ivy."

It was fun writing it. He invited me to write a mystery for the next
volume, but I'm not much of a mystery writer, so I didn't write one.

I have published quite a few articles and monographs during my career as a
librarian. It is unlikely that they would be of interest to readers of the
OTR Digest. Most of my stuff was published as reports during my time with
the South Dakota Planning Agency. Also, I wrote several bills that later
became law.

Frank Passage and I compiled a list of novels, short stories, etc. that were
adapted for radio and became the basis for the website, "Famous Authors."
Lou Genco helped us get it set up.

Subject: RE: Arthur Godfrey

One memory of Arthur Godfrey was the Lipton Tea and Lipton Soup
commercials, I think from both radio and television. I remember images
of Godfrey sipping the soup and exclaiming how good it was , and then
making jokes about the absence of pieces of chicken, stirring the soup
and looking for chicken pieces. I recall once Godfrey opening a soup
packet and searched for pieces of chicken and not finding any. Once he
announced that Lipton people probably just waved a chicken over the pot.
Whatever the Lipton people thought of his antics behind the scenes is
probably unknown, but Arthur sold oceans of chicken soup. Does anyone
have any info on that aspect of Godfrey's career?

As to the La Rosa affair, La Rosa actually had explored getting out of
his contract because of a disagreement about learning to dance for the
TV show, a demand that Godfrey had announced to the cast and that La
Rosa had loudly objected to. The surprise firing on the air was the
culmination of that issue. It led also to Godfrey's public feud with Ed
Sullivan when Sullivan featured La Rosa on his Sunday evening show
