Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Terryscope Radio Premium
Philip Chavin , speaking of radio premiums, notes,
a good example is the Terryscope used on the 1941-42 Libby's version of
Terry and the Pirates. In several episodes in Feb.'42 the Terryscope
was used very often by the good guys -- sometimes saving a life or
two -- and "Terryscope" was mentioned over and over again by the
actors on those radio broadcasts.
FWIW, the Terryscope wasn't a telescope. It was a toy periscope -- two
flat mirrors and a square tube. Such periscopes were at their best for a
short child trying to watch a parade and not in the front row. They were
also fun for hiding behind wide trees and looking at one's friends and
classmates.

Subject: Frances Langord
All of the recent postings on Frances Langford concentrated on her
work in "The Bickersons." Lest we forget, she had her own show. She
was the summer replacement for Burns and Allen in 1947. It was on
Thursdays from 8:30 PM to 9:00 PM with Maxwell House Coffee as the
sponsor. Her announcer was Toby Reed and it was written by Jean
Holloway. The Music was by Carmen Dragon with the Dick Davis Chorus,
which on the show was called "Eloise and the Maxwell House Coffee
Chorus." Earle Ross and Sam Edwards were also featured. I have
listened to some of these and though not great, very pleasant to
listen to.

Subject: Elliott and Cathy Lewis
Hello again --
Kenneth Clarke questioned the relationship of Elliott and Cathy Lewis. Yes,
they were definitely married, and worked singly and together on many
projects now called, somewhat unfairly, Old Time Radio -- because their work
was timeless and as actors they knew just the right amount of dramatic skill
to use in portraying the characters they played; no "over-the-top" acting
here, as so often heard on the old shows. They worked together by chance on
some old "Suspense" episodes, and worked together "intentionally" on one of
Elliott's projects, "On Stage," a fine dramatic series, somewhat
experimental in nature, which lasted far too short a time on radio. As I
remember, they divorced in the fifties or sixties, Cathy died soon after of
a heart attack, and Elliott went on to marry Mary Jane Croft (Our Miss
Brooks, Mel Blanc Show, etc.) whom he actually had known since 1939.

Theodore Sturgeon
Dear Lee, & gang-
From: Lee Munsick damyankeeinva@[removed]
"My Dream Is Yours" ... I watched the whole
tortuous thing, constantly hoping it would improve. Sound like today's TV
programs?
Many, yep! But not DEADWOOD, HOUSE, THE DAILY SHOW, THE SIMPSONS, etc.
Sounds like a lot of OTR, too: anything by the Hummerts, most Horror shows
other than QUIET PLEASE and LIGHTS OUT, many Kid's shows, etc.
... they undoubtedly played nice recordings ... back then there were such to
play! I don't think there's anyone left in the music business today that
even knows what good music is, or was.
'Cept maybe Paul McCartney, Danny Elfman, Zubin Mehta, etc.
All the best, from another (though perhaps not quite as) Grumpy (nor quite
as) Old Man!

Subject: "The Man in Black"
Arvo Ojala, the poor soul who was gunned down by Marshal Dillon in the
opening of television's "Gunsmoke," has passed away. Ojala was the "Man in
Black" for the first five years after "Gunsmoke" premiered. The producers
then used someone from their own production staff so they didn't have to
pay Ojala for each episode. All this information is contained in SuzAnne
and Gabor Barabas' seminal work on "Gunsmoke," published in 1990 by
McFarland. Much of their 836 page book is devoted to the show's radio
history with dozens of profiles of OTR performers.
They referred to Ojala as "the fastest gun in Hollywood" and also noted
"it was claimed that Arvo Ojala could draw, fire, and hit his target in
six-tenths of a second." Ojala taught James Arness to shoot and worked
with dozens of high profile Hollywood stars. He also owned a successful
business connected with the fast-draw hobby. I was quite surprised when an
obituary appeared in The Oregonian which stated that he lived in my
hometown of Gresham. When I read about him in the Barabas book years ago,
I always wanted to meet him. Turns out that he lived right down the
street.

Subject: cleaning your discs
Continuing the discussion - First the disclaimer. I'm not a chemist. I can
only report what those smarter than me have stated.
Isopropyl alcohol can also leave a residue, which can be audible, so it does
not clean your records that effectively. Imagine washing your dishes and
they come out of the dishwasher spotted. I once asked Sony about using iso
alc to clean tape heads and they responded to discontinue using it for that
purpose. No one seems to like the stuff for anything involving electronics.
If you want your records and radio transcriptions clean, use the Doctor's
Miracle Record Cleaner. I don't have any connections to it other than being
a satisfied customer.

Subject: re:discwasher woes
I too ran out of the original discwasher solution and someone familiar
with things vinyl recommended I try Kodak Lens Cleaner (distilled water
and ammonium carbonate). I've used it for a number of years and seems
to do the job. Just apply a few drops on the brush that came with the
original product. Works for me!
