[removed]

A teaser trailer for the new LONE RANGER movie is featured on [removed] For
anyone not into the modern-day movie lingo, a teaser trailer is just that.
Less than 30 seconds and only a tease, so you don't get much of a plot --
just a peak behind the curtain. Looks primarily like a standard Western,
which is pleasing.

While none of the rumored werewolves are featured, remember that
Bruckheimer's production company has officially announced this to be a
"science-fiction Western" so the initial "first look" wouldn't represent what
will be released in theaters.

Johnny Depp's rendition of Tonto is still ridiculous.

Subject: Re: Danger Zone-Pat Novak

Brent Pellegrini calls this 1951 Lippert Pictures release "a direct video
clone of Pat Novak." Not quite, but very close!

"Danger Zone" was one of three films starring Hugh Beaumont as private
investigator "Dennis O'Brien" to be released that year; the others were "Pier
23" and "Roaring City." All three "movies" consist of two independent
storylines, each running about a half-hour, then stitched together. Robert
Lippert's idea was to release each film to TV as two half-hour programs after
making all he could at the box office.

Each film was "based on a story by Herbert H. Margolis and Louis Morheim."
Well, those were the guys who wrote "Johnny Madero, Pier 23," the MBS series
Jack Webb did after leaving San Francisco for Hollywood in 1947. Richard
Breen co-created "Madero" with Webb, which was itself a "Pat Novak" clone,
but Margolis and Morheim wrote several of its scripts. These were adapted
for the three "Dennis O'Brien" movies.

I saw a movie from 1951 called Danger Zone that was a direct video clone
of Pat Novak. Guy named O'Brien (Novak)

There were three such movies that I know of - Danger Zone, Roaring City, and
Pier 23 - each containing two 30-minute episodes that are clearly versions of
Pat Novak episodes. They are available from VCI Entertainment in the
Forgotten Noir collections [Kit Parker] volumes 3 and 4. [These volumes 3 and
4 are the larger collections each containing 5-6 movies - they may have other
volume numbers when packaged in smaller sets]. They can be found at Amazon as
well.

Both volumes 3 and 4 also contain a David Harding-Counterspy movie based on
the radio show.

Subject: Pat Novak Movie Clones

During my high school years I rarely missed a Pat Novak program during
the original series broadcasts and remain an ardent fan [removed]
therefore Brent Pellegrini's post re: a 1951 movie "Danger Zone" that
he called a Novak video clone piqued my interest.

With a little research, I found that there were three B-grade motion
pictures made obviously based on the three Novak principals played by
Hugh Beaumont as Dennis O'Brien (Novak), Ed Brophy as Professor
Shicker (Madigan) and Richard Travis as Inspector Bruger (Hellman).
Each movie was around 60 minutes in length and comprised of two
plotted stories apparently with the idea in mind that they could later
be halved and again offered as a total of six 30 minute television
films. Herbert Margolis and Lou Morheim, both with significant credits
to their names, provided the two stories for each picture. The three
pictures all were released in a matter of weeks. "Roaring City" 4 May
1951, "Pier 23" 11 May 1951 and "Danger Zone" 20 April 1951.
Descriptions of the various plots sounds like they may have been
derived from the actual radio series story lines. "Pier 23" even has a
Father Donovan (Father Leahy) played by Ray Greenleaf in it just like
the Johnny Madero Pier 23 radio series, Richard Breen's radio clone of
Novak. If the movies had a "based on" credit to Breen's Novak or
Madero it's not reflected in the credits found on the IMDB data base.
Very curious since the movies were released only a couple of years
after Novak went off the air. Any thoughts?

My thx to Brent Pelligrini for writing about the seemingly Pat Novak inspired
movie "Danger Zone." There are so few of the Novak eps available ( about 10?
..though fortunately there are also a few eps of Webb's other short lived
series pre-Dragnet which are so similar ) so any clones (video or otherwise
would be interesting/fun to track down.
