Subject: The mystery lady in the Benny - Groucho sketch

Hello again --

I believe the hapless lady of mystery appearing with Benny (and never saying
a word) in the sketch with Groucho on YouTube which I called to everyone's
attention is Elvia Allman. She appeared on at least seven of Benny's TV
shows (see [removed]) but is best known as one of the telephone operators
that always gave Jack so much trouble on his radio program. She was the one
who instructed Lucy and Ethel on wrapping the candy transported by conveyor
belt in one of the funniest I Love Lucy sketches. And if you Google
"images," you will find quite a few pictures of her which resemble the lady
in the "You Bet Your Life" sketch.

Subject: Bill Stern Roasted In Newspaper Column

George Will opens his syndicated column today with a joke at the expense of
Bill Stern, a "newsman" who used to host a sports show in which he competed
with himself to tell the least convincing but most inspiring lies about
sports adn sports figures.

Stern was also spoofed by Woody Allen in "Radio Days," which shows his
impact spreads wide across political and artistic sensibilities.

Anyhow, Will uncorked one of Stern's classic howlers to lead todays
article -

Subject: Second Tier Networks?

For past month I've been reviewing the radio log records of the [removed]
Marine Corps Band. Although their presence on network radio began in
the Thirties, nearly every show they did for NBC, CBC, and Mutual was
live, usually a "remote" from their own auditorium. However in the
1950s, they began transcribing some of their programs, including
"Marine Bandstand" on the Mutual and another for ABC.

In January 1950 they recorded a series of musical programs for the
Continental Network and this unnamed program continued through July
1950. In February 1952 they recorded a new series "Musical Portraits"
for Liberty Broadcasting and this arrangement continued through May
of that year.

Any Digesters know the significance of Continental Network and
Liberty Broadcasting?

Subject: You Are There

My wife and I just watched an episode of the TV series, YOU ARE THERE, which
was also done on radio. It was the episode about Pearl Harbor . . . and
surprise, surprise, the network actually offered us a glimpse of the radio
news coverage from the radio control rooms on that day. They didn't just
focus on interviewing people at Pearl Harbor as the events occurred, they
gave us a glimpse of the radio news media.
The episode is available commercially for any interested parties.

Subject: Writer's Digest

I have been searching for a library that carries back issues of WRITER'S
DIGEST. There is an issue in early 1963 that features an article about an
Old-Time Radio-related subject that has my interest. Google isn't helping,
and I've tried all the University libraries I know. If anyone knows of a
library near them that has back issues, please let me know so I can contact
the library and have them look up the article for me.

Subject: RADIO RECALL: April issue

The PDF (and full-color) version of our April issue is enroute to our
cyber-space subscribers and the hard copy (B & W only) version will
be posted via USPO in the next two weeks.

Leading off this issue is a mini-history of "Lum & Abner" written by
Elizabeth McLeod in which she contrasts and compares it to its
obvious inspiration, "Amos 'n Andy." Charles "Doc" Herrold, the
father of broadcast radio, is largely forgotten today, even by the
OTR hobby community. Marty Cheek corrects that deficiency in his
detailed biography of this San Jose radio pioneer. And for those of
you who can hum, but not sing, the words to the Cream of Wheat
commercial from "Let's Pretend," RADIO RECALL graciously provides the
lyrics to that classic pitch.

Some new information on a kids' show that's slipped through the
cracks of OTR archives is also found in this issue. The series was
called "True Railroad Adventures" and NBC aired this 15 minute show
in the fall of 1933. leading up to Christmas. Not surprisingly, the
sponsor was Lionel Toy Trains. And lastly, perhaps to start but not
finish the argument, what ten books would comprise "The Essential OTR
Library"? RADIO RECALL identifies those ten publications (Digesters
Jim Harmon and Jim Cox have two books each in the final tally.)
