It looks like you've gotten a hold of some of the recreations that were done
in the '80s to fill in the holes of this very famous story. These have been
in circulation for a long time, although if anybody has them on reel or CD
in very good sound, I'd love to hear from you!

I'm nowhere near Baltimore, but if you need someone to transfer the tape,
shoot me an email.

Subject: Re Grove LAbs' sponsorship of THE SHADOW

on 9/23/08 9:45 PM, Rick Keating asked:

Anyway, another question has come up from listening to more episodes on the
"Greatest Man of mystery CD set." The episode "Murder with Music", broadcast
in 1946, has an ad for Grove's Labs (specifically, Grove's Cold Pills); and
both _On the Air_ and Jerry Haendiges' log state that Grove's began
sponsorship in 1949. The episode appears to be a Mutual Don Lee broadcast
("Mind Over Murder", broadcast just shy of two months later, has the same
announcer, who identifies that episode as coming from Mutal Don Lee). <SNIP>
If so, how long did Grove's sponsorship
run on the Don Lee Network.

According to my (still unpublished) SHADOW radiolog, Grove Labs/
Defender Multiple Vitamins was a regional sponsor of THE SHADOW from
09/09/45-03/03/46; and the series was broadcast as a Don Lee sustainer from
03/10/46-06/02/46. I suspect these specific dates probably came from Karl
Schadow's intensive research into newspaper microfilms. Grove Labs would
later sponsor THE SHADOW over a larger segment of the Mutual network in
September 1949.

[removed] I don't have the database with me, but I recall a few _Shadow_ episodes
actually opened with "the weed of [removed]", which usually comes at the
close. Anyone know if that was tacked on at some point when OTR was being
commercially released because the original openings of the episodes in
question were missing or damaged? Or were those episodes broadcast that way
for some reason? Going from memory, I think those were Welles and/or early
Johnstone episodes.

I've never found the "Weed of Crime" signature being used as a SHADOW
opening, so these must have been spliced on. Most of the 1937-38 Blue Coal
season starring Orson Welles originally aired with a shorter opening, just
the laugh and "The Shadow knows!" Some dealers spliced longer signatures as
the opening. (I recall that Great American Audio, BEFORE I began assembling
their SHADOW collections, spliced Bret Morrison openings on some of the
1937-38 SHADOW episodes because they wrongly assumed they were incomplete.

Of course, a number of the Orson Welles SHADOW shows ended with an alternate
closing signature: "As you sow evil, so shall you reap evil ..."

Of course, ALL the Orson Welles SHADOW broadcasts featured Frank Readick's
earlier openings. Welles was the only radio Shadow who never performed the
famous opening and closing signatures.

I am trying to find out the Jack Benny program in which Dennis Day (in
his own inimitable way) sang his version of "If You're Irish, Come Into the
Parlor". Can someone give me the date of the program, and also let me know
if/'where that program would be available?

      Many thanks!

Kenneth Clarke asked for dates of several M&M North episodes. He came to
the right place for answers.

The episodes are "Cry Foul" and "Collector's Item".

According to the fantastic OTR logs of The Old -Time Radio Researchers
, "Cry Foul" is episode #538 dated 2/2/54 and
"Collector's Item" is the next episode #539 dated 2/9/54

Subject: Der Fueher's Face and Doolittle Raid

<<The Wikopedia entry for "Der Fuehrer's Face" Larry links to--and
questions--is more or less accurate>>.

In the comment section of the entry someone made a snarky comment about the
writer hoping he got a good grade on the school paper. I am pleased that
corrections were made.

For those who might be interested in the Doolittle Raid there is a book
called "First Heroes".

[removed]

This gives more details of the raid and the tragedies that occurred because
of the raid. For instance 400,000, that's right, four hundred thousand,
Chinese were killed by the Japanese in retaliation for the raid. For those
who
want to listen to the book, the audio book is well read.

Undoubted the raid got a lot of play on the radio and certainly in the film
"30 Seconds Over Tokyo." , a film I have a vague memory of when it came out.

But but a more complete telling of the story shows the horrors and
unintended consequences of actions of war.

And to think that more than 400,000 people died because of a PR stunt is
most disturbing.

I just read your article about "Arthur Hopkins Presents" . My Aunt passed

are 14 items in this bag, several USO camp shows patches. several stage door
canteen ribbons and pins, a actors' equity association membership card from
11/1/55 , a altar society medal and a name pin on badge with "Miss Tess
Sheehan Gray Lady " on it. Was she from Detroit? was she from my families old

I have been enjoying the OTR series Have Gun Will Travel. The banter between
Paladin and Heyboy (or Miss Wong)at the beginning of each episode can be
quite funny.

I was just a child when HGWT was on the TV and barely remember it and I
remember nothing about the radio version. A little research on the internet
shows that there was 225 TV episodes and 104 (?) radio episodes.

Will someone tell me if the radio drama was just a repeat of the TV show with
minor script changes or were the story lines totally different?

Subject: A Plug For the Amateurs

Those of us who will be attending FOTR should be getting rather excited by
now. Maybe it is just me because this will be only my third FOTR Convention.
I thoroughly enjoyed the other two. I wonder how many people know that the
Dave Warren Players consist mainly, but not exclusively, of amateurs. This
year, they will appear Saturday at 12:00 noon. That is not quite prime time,
and last year, they appeared at about 4:45 PM, so many attendees just do not
see them. As an amateur, I was fortunate to be in last year's "My Friend
Irma", under the very capable direction of Gary Yoggy. This year we are
doing "The Aldrich Family". We do get an audience, but we really would
appreciate it if you made a special effort to drop by at 12:00 noon and see
this group that has such a long and prestigious
tenure with FOTR. I am looking forward to greeting old friends.
