Subject: The Lone Ranger's First Name: Kemosabe?
Frank McGurn speculates,
I suggest that those who want to know the Lone
Range's name listen to all the episodes and listen very
carefully and you will find [removed]'ll save you time his
first Name is "Kemosabe" .That is what Tonto
called him. Maybe I spelled wrong, but that's it
Kemoasbe Reid.
"Kemosabe" was variously translated as "trusty scout," or "faithful
friend." From Tonto's dialect. Rather like one friend calling the
other, "good buddy." Tonto and Reid knew each other as children, and
Kemosabe was the moniker Tonto hung on him. Probably it had great nuance
in Tonto's native tongue.

Subject: MP3 Players
It is well known that MP3 recordings can be played on a computer with a
sound card and speakers. It is al;so known that there are several
portable MP3 players.
What is often forgotten that DVD players can, for the most part, play MP3
recordings. I've given MP3 recordings to some who grew up listening to
OTR and who have DVD players.

Can anyone explain how Charlie Ruggles made it on radio as a comic. I have
listened to several "Barrel of Fun" shows and one or two other on which he
was a guest and I don't think I have ever heard a less funny comic. His
material was horrible, his timing was atrocious and it seems to me that the
only one that ever laughed at him and his material was himself. I fail to see
how he ever made it to radio or managed to say on for more than one show. Was
there a time when radio was that desperate for performers?

Subject: Re: Harold Peary
I just finished listening to all 38 episodes of "The Harold Peary Show,"
and I must admit I liked them for the most part. They were well written, and
were genuinely funny in some parts. However, the entire series seemed to be
in
a constant state of flux to me. Or at least the first half of the series at
any rate. Characters coming and going, such as Little Billy, The Jockey for
instance. Cousin Raymond is another. He shows up, lasts a few shows, and then
is gone. It just seems to me the show was always in a constant search for
characters with staying power such as that great cast on Gildersleeve. It
never
made it as far as I am concerned.
I have read where Peary moved from NBC, to CBS in the great CBS hijacking of
talent from NBC, thinking Kraft would follow him, which of course we know
didn't happen. I also read he was tired of the Gildersleeve role, and that
that
was another reason he made the move. I find that hard to believe in itself,
as much of the Harold Peary show was in some ways a lot like Gildersleeve. I
threw that notion out. I also read another of Harold's wanting to leave
Gildersleeve, was so he could use his singing voice more, and that the
producers of
Gildersleeve did not think singing fit in with the comedic theme of that
show, which I totally agree with. I heard him sing on a few episodes of
Gildersleeve, and it did sound out of place.
Something else I find odd about Harold. He was never married on any of his
shows, and of course never had children. The closest to him having a family
was
Gildersleeve of course. And, although it was intimated on Fibber & Molly
that he had a wife, her voice was never heard, and when he moved from Wistful
Vista, to Summerfield, his wife stayed behind, and although his girdle
factory
was mentioned a few times, she was never mentioned as far as I can remember.
I am wondering if perhaps Harold did this to be the sole head of a
household, and therefore, the sole star of the show, with satellite
characters to fill
in where needed?
Just something I have been wondering about. Anyone else have any thoughts on
this subject?

Subject: Japanese Americans in OTR in World War II
The conversation about Kato got me thinking -- were there any depictions
of Japanese Americans in OTR during World War II? Did dramas ever
mention the internment camps? Or was the subject avoided?
Years ago I interviewed George Takei (from Star Trek) for a magazine
article on the internment camps. I was amazed how much I didn't know
about that part of my country's history. It's almost as if we've tried
to forget about it. But during the war, I assume people weren't as
embarrassed about the situation, so I would assume it would show up in
OTR. Or is my thinking off base here?
Thanks for the history lesson!

My Grandfather passed away in June, 2005 at the age of 80. He was just shy of
his 60th wedding anniversary which is October 21 (1945). My Grandmother is
still with us and I wanted to compile some radio shows that were playing on
the day they were married. Ideally I would like to recreate 3-4 shows from
the evening they were married.
Does anyone have any ideas for shows from this date? I would appreciate any

Subject: Green Hornet clarification, Kato's nationality
I received a mean e-mail from a Digest reader/poster today apparently
irritated that my posting contradicted others' postings and that I was
inaccurate about Kato being Philipino BEFORE the [removed] entry into the war.
Reprinting part of the e-mail from Mr. Irritated:
While I respect your postings on the Digest, you should not contradict
others with your errors. Your posting was disrespectful. Kato become a
citizen of the Philippines 'after' December 7. Everyone except you knows
that this. Brush up on your knowledge of the subject and forget
contradicting Dunning's authority.
Well, sir, I first want to apologize if what I typed on the Digest was
inaccurate . . . in your opinion. First, the purpose of the posting was to
clarify a rumor that has been going on for decades. I assumed others might
mention Pearl Harbor, and they were rightly so if they posted such because
reference guides like John Dunning's book state so, but I'm sorry to differ.
While I am not an expert on old-time radio, I have attempted to make my
postings a contribution toward the knowledge and respect we have for the
same programs we enjoy listening to. It is possible that multiple
encyclopedias can be wrong, and this is a case in point.
I'd like to state that when I post on the Digest, I try to list the source
of information, and when I do not, then the source is my own research and/or
observation. Case in point: the recent subject of the Lone Ranger's first
name. I have NEVER listened or read all 2,900+ radio broadcasts or watched
all 200+ television broadcasts, the two serials or multiple movies to be
qualified enough to state what his first name is, or lay claim that he never
had a first name. After all, stating such would be inaccurate. LONE RANGER
experts who have accomplished more than I have clearly tell me that the Lone
Ranger NEVER had a first name and that Trendle clearly wanted that to remain
so. I merely left it as a reader, not a poster on the subject because I am
not an expert on the subject and have no merit to add any valuable insight
to the subject.
I don't read a posting on the Digest and then turn to encyclopedias for the
answer to sound like a know-it-all. I post to answer a query for the sole
purpose of helping assist someone with their endeavors. I admit I can make
a mistake, after all, I am human. But I will restate my position - Kato's
nationality was changed BEFORE the [removed] entry into the war and the Pearl
Harbor situation was not the cause. There was conflict in Asia before the
war and I am certain that this is the case. I consulted Terry Salomonson
this afternoon, an expert on the Green Hornet, and he agrees with me.
Normally I would not have taken the time to back up my previous posting,
even with a mean e-mail like the one I received, and such e-mails don't
convince me to take the time to find proof and back myself up. My schedule
is way too busy (I work a 9-5, finished four book manuscripts in the past
five months, operate two businesses and plan a nostalgia convention - not to
mention spend time with my wife which is more important than any hobby) for
me to worry about such matters. Normally I would have ignored the mean
e-mail and just moved on, and consider my first posting about the subject to
be good enough. But a friend of mine told me on the phone today that I
should post something to back up my claim and on his insistence, I am doing
so.
The June 21, 1941 broadcast, "Walkout for Profit," which was one of the four
consecutive episodes in the MR. X (the super-criminal) story-arc that was
CLEARLY broadcast in June and July of 1941, refers to Kato as being Filipino
(sp?).
KATO: Carson, Carson? It does not refresh itself in my mind, Mr. Britt.
BRITT: I thought you Philipinos had marvelous memories.
Anyone who has this episode on MP3 or CD or audio cassette can listen and
hear this clearly. The date is accurate, there is no mistake on the date.
Hence, something to back up my previous posting.

What did his nephew, Dan Reid, call him? Just go back and listen to
episodes that Dan was in and you will get the answer - [removed] Did
Dan call him Uncle Hay You? Did Dan call him Uncle anything? I
don't think so.
Dan didn't call him "Uncle Hey You!" but he certainly didn't call him
Uncle John! I don't have any recollection, but I suspect he probably
called the LR "Uncle" without any name.
Did Tonto put names on the Grave marker? If he did what were the
names?
Tonto came to Bryant's Gap after the gun battle was over. He knew
the LR from childhood and may or may not have known his name. He
wouldn't have known any of the others' names. He just buried five
rangers and made six graves, but how could he have put names on the
grave markers? And what would he have written them with?
For that matter, was it ever established that Tonto could read the
White Man's language?
I'll save you time his first Name is "Kemosabe" .That is what Tonto
called him. Maybe I spelled wrong, but that's it Kemoasbe Reid.
But until sometime in the late 1940s, the LR and Tonto called each
other Kemosabe.

A recovering procrastinator, it was only recently that I made good a promise to join
the Metro Washington Old Time Radio Club. Having joined the membership year in
progress, back issues of their newsletter, Radio Recall, were promptly mailed.
Ah, but then came notification of the electronic availability of the February, 2007
issue by PDF (in color). My "copy" arrived within an hour of having agreed to give
it a try.
Those without a computer and/or printer will prefer/need a hard copy, but having
electronic capability increases utility since it can be stored in various ways and/or
printed out.
Now to get caught up on all the great information!

I walked in the door during a conversation, and there was a comment about the
Lone Rangers First Name. With tongue-in-cheek there was a comment that the
Lone Ranger's name must have been Kemosabe Reid. If you have read Dunning's
book you've found that Kemoasbe came from a camp site Trendle happened to
drive by one day. If you had not read this information you may not have quite
understand that Tonto kept on saying Kemosabe because he knew Running Water
would be there and wanted to return to Camp Kee-mo-sah-bee.
Seriously, I've recently had the opportunity to listen to most of the Lone
Ranger series in a 25 year period of broadcast time and realized there was a
subtle change in the character of the Lone Ranger from the 40's to the 50's.
As Brace Beamer took over the role, the Ranger was an agent of the government
appointed by the President to fight those determined to destroy the United
States. By the late 40's and into the 50's the scripts were aimed more at
children sometimes presented in a talking down fashion.
