Subject: Re: Guide dogs on ole time radio:
I'm not 100% positive ( meaning I can't name the episode)
but I seem to remember a Challenge of the Yukon
that picked up on this idea. Give the extremely dog friendly nature of
the show,
the theme may have occurred more than once, even if they weren't
identified
as Seeing Eye, or Guide dogs. It was much more about the loyalty of
the animal.

Subject: Daws Butler event
In case it's not been mentioned yet, there will be a big Daws Butler event in Los
Angeles at the end of July. Tickets are selling fast, since the 3 guests will be June
Foray, Corey Burton and Nancy Cartwright. Stan Freberg might show up, but don't hold
your breath. You can find more info about it at
[removed]
It was put together to honor Daws' long-awaited book, Scenes for Actors and Voices,
which I have just published. Find out more about the book at
[removed]
It's one of the few books out there for voice actors. And contains a lengthy foreword by
Corey Burton (who now does all the Hans Conreid and Paul Frees characters), giving
advice for all you would-be voice actors out there.
Enjoy!

I don't know if WWL in Gnawlens is a clear channel station but I could pick
it up in Phoenix
in the 50's. It wasn't strong but it was understandable. WCCO, WHO, KMOX
and WWL were about
as far east as I could go consistently from Phoenix. It is almost as if Ol
Man River was a barrier.

There was and still is a clear channel station in New
Orleans. It is WWL 870 AM. I can still hear it at
night from Tuscaloosa, AL.

From Those Were the Days --
1940 - As a summer replacement for blind, piano virtuoso Alec Templeton,
The Quiz Kids was first heard. The show continued on NBC until 1953.
1943 - The Dreft Star Playhouse debuted on NBC. Jane Wyman (the former
Mrs. Ronald Reagan) starred in the first broadcast, titled Bachelor Mother.
1944 - The Alan Young Show debuted on NBC. It was a summer replacement
for the popular Eddie Cantor. The show became a regular in the fall NBC
lineup.

Tom Filippetti (husband of Marilyn and father of Mia) passed away last Sunday
after a serious illness. His funeral was held yesterday at which the Boogie
Woogie Girls sang "We'll Meet Again" , Ed Clute played a medley of Tom's
favorite songs and Janice Slocum gave the scripture reading. Because many
readers of the Digest have met the Boogie Woogie Girls at various OTR
Conventions, Derek Tague thought it should be posted on the Digest. For those
who'd like to send their condolences, which I'm sure Marilyn and Mia would
appreciate, their address is 141 Marian Ave., Elmira Heights, NY 14903

Subject: On OTR guide dogs and loaner phonographs
Radio guide dogs:
I don't know if there was a guide dog, but I once heard an episode of a good
radio drama, part of a series, that starred a blind detective. It was a
marvelous excuse for the sort of narrative that's necessary in any radio
drama: the detective is blind, and the audience is, too. There may well
have been a guide dog featured therein.
Library of Congress loans phonographs?
It is possible that the Library of Congress loaned out phonographs, but I'm
wondering if our poster might have been thinking of the American Printing
House for the Blind, in Cincinnati. They were in the talking-book business
through the 1980's, and probably still are. In 1981, I courted an
attractive lady who suffered from a case of on-again/ off-again multiple
sclerosis. We were searching for something-or-other in her apartment one
day and came across a weird-looking but high-quality portable phonograph.
It was a talking-book machine. There were some records with it: they were
12" disks on vinyl and ran at 8 1/3 rpm (I think.) Watching the record turn
was like watching the second hand of a clock. The sound wasn't bad: the
frequency range was limited, so the readings sounded like they were done
over the telephone. But the signal was very clear: little distortion and
almost no noise.
Her illness was in remission at that time, so we decided to return the
machine. I packed it up with its records in its exceptionally clever little
shipping box and lugged it to the local post office. When I asked the clerk
what the postage would be, I got a surprise: there wasn't any. Printed or
audio materials for the blind ride free in the US mail.

Don't quote me on this, but I think when the shows are broadcast the day
after there are no commercials, but since I am on a 56K modem that
usually gets about [removed] I haven't waited around, but that is my feeling.
This should enhance your listening. Also, if you go to the KNX site you
can find out which programs in the given series are going to be broadcast
on any given day. Good listening. Kurt

Subject: RM to MP3
I too am interested in any information on conversion of RM files to MP3
since the Jean Shepherd shows up on the flick lives site are all in RM
format. There are about 16 of them up there so enjoy listening. I have
been told about some work arounds and if there are no responses in a
couple of days I will tell you what they told me, unless somebody comes
up with a better idea. By the way, the jean shepherd site is
[removed]
if my memory serves me correctly. Like I said there are about 14 or 15
shows up there, but they will be in RM format. Enjoy. Kurt

1949 - Fred Allen had his final program, though he continued for several
years to guest on other shows.
I remember seeing him on television, filling in for Herb Shriner on the quiz
show "Two for the
Money." I also remember that our TV set was on the blink at the time that he
died, so we
listened to a radio tribute to him. About the only thing that I remember
from it is that Herb
Shriner was one of the participants.
I'm not sure, but I have a vague recollection that "Two for the Money" may
also have been on
radio. Can anyone enlighten me on that?
Whatever became of Herb Shriner, anyway?

Subject: Tube radios = better reception?
George Aust posted:
Also I remember tuning into stations alot more distant than 100 miles.
Of course that would be at night. I especially remember listening to a
New Orleans station it seems to me Blue Barron and his Orch. playing at
some hotel. Is there a clear channel station there?
A lot of the stories about old-time (tube-type) car radios include memories
of hearing stations far away (especially at night) - a capability that we
don't seem to have with today's "stock" radios.
Assuming that it's true that you used to be able to pull in stations from
hundreds of miles away under the right [removed] which I have
experienced some years [removed]
I have some questions about why:
. Were "tube" radios more sensitive?
. Were there more high-power stations broadcasting at night than there are now?
. Did more local stations go off the air at night than do so now, thus
allowing easier reception of distant stations on the same frequency?
. Were there fewer radio stations, *period*, so it was easier to find
distant stations to listen to?
Just curious,
Herb Harrison
