Subject: Friend is looking for information
I have a friend, Steve, who might or might not be on the digest so I'll do
this for [removed] he's looking for any newspapers that listed plot or guest
descriptions for the evening's radio programs next to radio guides in
periodicals. I told him not to use the newspapers as that only lists what
was "planned" to be aired, not necessary what did air, and he has
acknowledged that, but whatever he's looking up is already documented so no
harm.
Basically, does any experts know of any newspapers that listed highlights of
the evening, next to their radio schedules, for the years 1946 - 1951 or
even partial? He already has Orlando Reporter (I believe that's what it's
called) and he says they don't list highlights of the show or shows he's
interested in.
Drop me a line, I'll give you his e-mail and phone number and you can help
him out.
Many thanks,
Martin

Incidentally, my VISA card use pays for my AOL service because I get a point

Jim Cox, almost as an aside in a note about excessive commercial breaks,
sez:
I never realized when a station's disk jockeys were killing off
network [removed]
Wait a minute now, Jim! Don't you agree that network radio was killed
off by TV? When all the stars abandoned radio for television, the
stations scrambled to fill their airtime the least expensive way--with
disc jockeys. No longer could even the largest stations afford live
studio orchestras, but paying one guy to play a stack of records didn't
exactly break the bank.
If television never came along, I think our radio dial would still be
filled with sitcoms, mystery, drama, quiz shows, and soap operas. Not
disc jockeys!

Dennis Crow sez,
The only word in the English language without a vowel

But "psst" is not the only English word without a vowel. As many of us
know, Paul Harvey seldom lets the truth get in the way of a good story.

Foley artists for the broadcast. David Chamberlain
Oh, so I suppose he is planning on putting a new soundtrack to an
existing movie of the program? If not, he would have no need for Foley
Artists. I thought we had thoroughly explained to everyone long ago
that Foley is a specific branch of sound effects where new effects are
synchronized to existing moving images. It has absolutely no other
meaning. Since there is no recorded images in radio drama, the sound
effects are supplied by Sound Effects Artists who are not forced to rely
on the filmed actions of actors but instead are free to create their own
images thru their sounds. You will notice that on some movies there are
credits to both Foley and Sound Effects Artists. The Foleys sync to the
images, while the Sound Effects create the general Sound Pattern.

Regarding the recent discussion of RS [removed] They botched mine so badly
(from the "blowout" summer clearance sale) and were so indifferent on the
phone that I've decided to take a sabbatical -- a year, or two, perhaps --
from placing any RS orders. I've spent, easily, a couple thousand dollars on
their products, which should count for something, but apparently does not. In
the past, if I had a problem with an order, I could call and get it SOLVED
right away on the phone, and be treated graciously, but that is no longer the

Subject: Just Call Me Cisco
Joy Jackson writes:
Surely the Cisco Kid had a real name. When he introduced himself to
senoritas, did say he was The Cisco Kid? Or is he really Francisco de la
vega [removed] And how did he get the name to begin with?
Well, he got the name from his creator, O. Henry (real name William
Sydney Porter, 1862-1910), an ex-con and prolific short story writer. In
1904 he wrote "The Caballero's Way" for McClure's magazine which is the
debut of the Cisco Kid. Except he's no hero, no kid (he's 25), and not
Latino. He's a Yanqui, and brags of killing dozens, mostly Mexicans,
because he likes "to see them kick." His speckled roan horse is unnamed
and his girl friend is Tonia Perez. He is a cruel lone-wolf who is
tracked by Captain Duval of Laredo, TX. (I won't spoil it by giving away
the ending.)
Twenty five years later, The Cisco Kid came to the movies, and the only
resemblance was the name. In the films, he is a Mexican do-gooder,
riding his horse, Diablo, and his new side-kick, Pancho, rides a mount
named Loco. Warner Baxter got to play him first and actually won an
Oscar for Best Actor in the role. He did three more Cisco Kid movies,
and then Cesar Romero took over, making about ten movies. Gilbert Roland
did about a half dozen movies after Romero, followed by Duncan Renaldo.
And, as you probably know, Cisco Kid came to radio in 1943, first the
voice of Jackson Beck, and later, Jack Mather. There were 41 issues of
the comic book (1950 to 58) featuring this Mexican hero and he was also
in his own comic strip from 1951 to 1968. It was also successful on
television (ZIV syndication 1950-58).
And for the life of me, I can't remember him in any of these various
media referring to himself as anything other than the Cisco Kid.

Maybe I shouldn't bring this up. (Then why am I) Anyway, you can now buy
any one of several DVD units that will record. About six months ago it
would have cost you $1,000. Today, between $550 and $700. By December, it
will probably even cost less.
DVD will eventually replace video tape. I'm not going to go into a long
discussion about how this will happen and about all the current VCR units
still in the field.
But, the DVD recorders have some neat features. The Panasonic allow you to
record a program and then while you are recording it, you can start playing
it back at any point while still continuing to record.
Image that you have gone out for an evening. You set the recorder to record
from 8 to 11. You get back at 10:30. You don't want to stop recording, but
you'd like to watch the 8:30 show. So, you simply press a button and you
are watching what you recorded at 8:30, while you continue to record the 10
- 11 o'clock show. Try and to that on video tape.

Subject: Re: Tapes that squeal
The fix for a squeaking tape is to bake it. Actually you use a very low
temperature. About what you would get from an oven light. IOW, turn on the
oven light, not the oven. Place the tape on the rack and let it sit for a
certain amount of time.
This method is used for getting a pre-recorded tape to playback. Then you
transfer the material to another tape and just put the original tape aside,
since it can start squealing again.
If you have blank tape that squeal, for get it. The baking method does not
last as is not meant for processing un-recorded tapes.

Subject: Re: Too much advertising
Individual listeners today simply don't matter to those profitable
enterprises. They bombard us with every ad they can sell. (Where's the
FCC when you need it?) Even though I'd enjoy some of those commercial
programs today, it's not worth the effort to keep turning the thing off
every few minutes. Jim Cox
Jim, makes some very good points in his posting. This is why I turned to
Internet Radio for all my listening pleasure. Some of the traditional
media run broadcasters still insert commercials. In fact a few of them
duplicate their traditional AM/FM broadcasts.
However there are the jewels on the Net. The majority of stations listed
on the [removed] network are independently produced and owned.
In fact thanks to [removed] I have been drawn to Old Time Radio
broadcasts. I had not listened to an OTR show since the late 90's while serving
in the US Navy overseas. However about late 1999 early 2000 I discovered
[removed] and the many OTR streams.
But, then I soon discovered that either the stations were broadcasted at
a high bit rate. So I could not listen with my slow dial-up. And the
number of station offering a variety of OTR was not there.
About this same time period. I discovered OTR available for downloading
on the net, and the many distributors and later the OTR trading clubs.
In short order I had obtained a substantial collection, and made the
jump to start my own Internet Radio station. Mystery Play Internet Radio!
Only so that I could upload and listen to my preferred OTR. That was
almost two years ago.
I soon discovered that others had similar taste in Old Time Radio. So
the listener base has grown and continues to grow.
All this was just because local AM/FM stations could not provide what I
wanted to hear. Granted there is some advertising on my station, plugged in by
[removed] but that's how they pay for the bandwidth. And its not very
intrusive, actually you may hear a 30 sec commercial about every hour or so,
and sometimes less.
When I started the station, it was and still is a hobby, and it was
FREE. Now I pay a fee to broadcasts. It's a small fee compared to other
services, and I am not allowed to generate income. But it's still a hobby.
Now, the alliance of Big Business, Big Traditional Radio Broadcasters
and various other groups are trying to shut us down, with extremly high
royality payments etc.
All this just because I did not want to hear their blasted interrupting
commercials. I'm tempted, but have not gone completely [removed] but I'm
tempted to throw my radio and my TV into the trash bin!

Clyde J. Kell
