Subject: Captain Midnight's Last OTR Season
Joe Mackey <joemackey108@[removed] notes,
After a decade on radio, Captain Midnight was heard for the final
time. Put your secret decoder badges away now, kids.
The story involved is rather interesting. Through the 1948 season, the
Captain Midnight program was in 15-minute adventure serial format. In
the 1949 season, the program changed to complete adventures in half-hour
format, like the evening programs. The writing was considerably more
juvenile than the serial version, and because each show was complete, the
Code-O-Graph ("decoder") premiums were deemed unnecessary; none was
offered in the last season. (The messages were invariably hints to what
would happen to resolve a dilemma the characters were facing, which was
unnecessary in a complete-adventure program,or the introduction of a new
plot element. These were incompatible with complete shows.)
The star who played the title role, Ed Prentiss, was replaced on the
half-hour version by Paul Barnes.

Subject: OTR Feuds
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
Someone recently asked me about any feuds which might have existed
between
people known for being connected with OTR. The only ones which came to my
mind
were the Fred Allen-Jack Benny feud and the one between gossip columnists
Hedda
Hopper and Louella Parsons. My questions are: (1) Did these people REALLY hate
the
other person or were they just publicity stunts? (2) Were there other notable
feuds related
to OTR? (3) In the case of Hopper and Parsons, did they take shots at each
other on
their radio shows or in their columns?
I have an episode of "Information Please" where Fred Allen was a guest
star. He
took a few shots at Benny, but nothing which could be considered really
'mean-spirited'. The only thing I've heard about Hedda Hopper was that
she was an actress at one
time and turned into somewhat of a insider/gossip columnist. She 'broke'
several stories
such as the relationship between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy (who was
married at the time) and the affair between Joseph Cotten and Deanna Durbin. I
daresay
that these stories and others probably didn't set too well with those she
reported about.
BTW, did she have anything to do with the infamous Hollywood Blacklist which
had
several actors and actresses listed as communists?

No sooner do I finish a listing of Marlene Dietrich's radio career, I receive
the most recent issue of AMERICA IN WWII (yes, I an a subscriber) and was
surprised to see it features an article about Marlene Dietrich entitled,
MARLENE DIETRICH, SECRET WEAPON. It tells how the German-born movie star
Marlene Dietrich unleashed her sultry voice on Hitler's boys in uniform,
giving them the blues with her radio broadcasts.
