Subject: Benito, the Barnstormer
Recently, I picked up a curio. It appeared to be a watch fob, made of
stamped brass, flashed/washed with a thin gold covering. It had a scene
on it of an early aircraft, aloft, with pilot visible, wearing leather
helmet and goggles. Since one of my interests is aviation, I was
intrigued by the aircraft, which looked as if is was a very early
European design, probably Italian. The scenery depicted below the
aircraft looked like a palace of some sort and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
I sent a scan of the fob to some fellow pilots, and asked them if they
could provide any information on it. One sent it on to some of his
acquaintances, and got back a reply:
"That is the "Magic Monoplane Talisman" given away on the kid's radio
show BENITO THE BARNSTORMER, a local show in New York City, aimed of
course at the Italian market. There was also a "Golden Spaghetti" which
was a brass straw, it is very hard to find as parents threw them away is
disgust when they got really crudded up. The kid was supposed to keep
the Monoplane Talisman on him at all times, same with the Golden
Spaghetti. Sponsor of the program was Betta Pasta , a local firm . Ran
in the 1933 season, no shows have survived."
Apparently, I've stumbled upon a very early radio premium. Benito the
Barnstormer isn't listed in Dunning. Does anyone know anything more
about this program?

A little clarification on this item.
"Professor Quiz" began as a pilot in Washington, [removed] over the local CBS
station, WSJV in early1936. The host was Jim McWilliams, known to
listeners as "Uncle Jim." After 20 weeks, the local show was preparing
to move to the Columbia Broadcasting System but the sponsor, G.
Washington Coffee, had an issue with the way CBS was handling the move
to network. I believe it was related to moving the show to New York
versus keeping it originating out of Washington [removed] So the name was
changed to "Uncle Jim's Question Bee" and moved over to the National
Broadcasting Company.
Meanwhile, Columbia went ahead with its own plans, creating a new
version of the original concept retaining the name - Professor Quiz, but
putting in a different host - Craig Earl premiering in October 1936.
Ironically, WSJV which created the original show was not able to carry
the new "Professor Quiz" in the beginning because it was placed in a
national slot that was being used locally by a sponsor in [removed]

Subject: Johnny Dollar
Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar in my opinion the script can be used for either a
29 minute or it can be divvied in to 5 parts at 14:40 each.
The show format is the same for each length of show. The opening and closing
music play for the same length of time. Each format has the same announcer's
introduction. In the 5 part episodes Johnny recaps what happen in the last
episode. Then there is the story. The recap is added time not needed in the
29 minute episode. the announcer makes remarks at the end and them the
music, the same in either format
My conclusion is that there is a lot wasted time in the 14:40 that take away
form the actual story. The 29 minute version gives you a smoother story and
you don't have remember where the story was yesterday. You get only about 5
minutes of story each day.
You get about the same story for about continuously for about 26 minutes.

Subject: Balzer and Bergen
George Balzer used to come down to the PPB Radio Archives, some times
to do a little research and other times to simply visit. He was
always dressed in a sports outfit, neat and smiling. He was soft
spoken and VERY funny. He would relax and often tell funny stories
about when he was working for Jack Benny. I certainly will miss him.
One time he brought his manuscript of his book on Jack Benny to PPB
and I was able to read some of it in the short time he was there.
Wonderful writing. A real pro, with great insight into his writers
life with Benny. It's sad the book was never published. And, he
really knew a lot about OTR; not just about Jack Benny.
One day, many years ago, Frances Bergen came down to PPB. (By coming
down to PPB I mean you would enter the Washington Mutual bank and
take the elevator DOWN to the basement where the Pacific Pioneer
Broadcasters Archives is located.) She had all these 16" discs of
Edgar Bergen's radio show that she wanted transfered to tape. I
volunteered to do the work. I transfered all the shows to tape, then
delivered the discs and the taped copies to her home. As I was
getting ready to leave, I mentioned to her how I met and spent a half
hour with Edgar, and how important he was to me when I was a child
listening every Sunday to the Charlie McCarthy show on radio. I told
her that the half hour I spent talking to Edgar was a precious moment
in my life. She seemed quite touched by this information and asked me
to wait a moment. I waited while she disappeared into another part of
her home. She returned with something in her hand. "I want to thank
you for telling me about Edgar. I'd like you to have this." She
handed me an NBC photo of Groucho Marx sitting on Edgar Bergens knee
(just like Charlie would sit). There were smiles on their faces. She
also handed me a Charlie McCarthy dollar bill. It had pictures of
Edgar, Charlie, Mortimer, and Effie Klinker and a lot of humorous
writing. Really looked like a dollar bill from a distance. I was
surprise she would do that. She was a kind woman and missed her
husband, but said she was proud of her daughter, Candice, and her son.
Today, I keep that photo and that silly dollar bill is a special
place, safe for all to see. It is little gestures like that from
Mrs. Bergen and the willingness of George Balzer to freely regale me
with funny stories that have made me, and others, enjoy what was once
the greatest live medium of entertainment ever --- radio.

Subject: YTJD-- Minority Opinion
Sorry, for the most part, I prefer the half-hour "Yours
Truly, Johnny Dollar." Yes, a few of the serialized shows
are excellent, and show plot development and complications
not possible in a half-hour.
However, too many of the serialized shows are very talky,
quite frustrating-- full of dialogue that does not advance
the plot and serve only to take up time.

Subject: Halloween shows
October is here, which means it's almost time for my favorite holiday of
the year. In honor of this holiday, I present my Essential Halloween
OTR list.
Every October (and occasionally at other times of the year), people on
this list share their favorite horror shows. For the past couple of
years, I've been compiling a list of these shows. I haven't gotten
around to hunting down episode numbers, broadcast dates, or even some
correct episode titles yet, but I'll fill that in eventually.
I'm sure this list isn't complete yet, so I'd love to hear what other
shows the digesters think of as the best horror.
