SAME TIME, SAME STATION
We pay tribute to the wonderful man who was Art Gilmore. He was 98 years
of age when he died on September 26.
His announcing credits in radio, Television, Movie Trailors, and
recordings was incredible.
We select a few radio memories to share with you on this week's show.
First, an interview done by John Dunning with Art Gilmore on 09-26-1982.
Next, DR. CHRISTIAN
"Blind Boy" from 12-03-37
and finally, RED RYDER
02-24-42 Hot Lead in Scorpion Gulch.
Art Gilmore not only announced this last show, he also whistled its theme.

Hi. I'm not sure if I asked this once before. If I did, I missed it
somehow. I sometimes hear the "Music and the Spoken Word" broadcasts from
the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on KNX-1070 from 5:30 to 6 am on Sundays. Is
this the oldest network radio broadcast still on the air? How far in
advance is each week's show recorded? Also, how many CBS affiliates carry
this broadcast?

Did anyone catch the OTR reference in Sunday night's episode of "Mad Men"?
Character Don Draper is on the phone with a Johnson's Wax representative
(apparently pulling out of his agency) and Draper actually brings up the
company's sponsorship of "Fibber McGee & Molly" years earlier. Unless
someone knows differently, this has to be the most detailed OTR reference
I've
seen on a post-millenium dramatic TV show (obviously not figuring in the "War
of the Worlds" parody on "The Simpsons").

I was delighted to see Martin's post concerning Marsha Hunt and her book,
"The Way We Wore"--it's a terrific book and everything he says about it is
true.
Earlier this year, we had the good fortune to join Ms. Hunt at her California
home for a long and fascinating conversation about her career in movies,
radio, and television. We'll be playing this conversation (and hearing some
samples of Ms. Hunt's radio career) on the October 16 "Those Were the Days"
broadcast (1 to 5 pm CST every Saturday in the Chicago area on WDCB-FM and
streaming at [removed]). She is a gracious hostess and a great
conversationalist.

Ed Carr just wrote about enjoying BBC Radio. Include me in. I seldom hear
any streaming radio but have traded for a lot of BBC radio drama. For the
newcomer, try these, if you like science fiction and fantasy:
Doppelganger Machine (1974) 50+ mins.
Ghost train (1998). 80+ mins.
Day of the Triffids (1960) 3 hours
War of the Worlds (1967) 3 hours
And there are many more. Someone traded them to me in mp3, so I have many
more to listen to. What a treat! Real radio, radio drama, is still alive
in England! And I think [removed] Can anyone tell me about Canada?

many thanks for reminding me about bbc radio
BBC Radio 4 has many good things going for it. They still produce
well-regarded drama and comedy programs, as well as history programs and
audio documentaries. In addition, the "radio culture" in the UK is such
that many popular television programs are also done in special radio
versions from time to time.
BBC has an online player that will stream all of their services
worldwide. In addition, there are several widgets available for PC or
Mac on Yahoo Widgets that will play streaming audio from the BBC.
Several iPhone apps are available as well that will play the audio
streams. You can take Radio 4 (or any other BBC radio station) with you
literally anywhere in the world with one of those.
(None of this is directly related to OTR, of course, but
[removed] is still maintaining the type of programming that we
used to have here, back when OTR was fresh and new.)

CBS Television has programmed ... Hawaii Five-O, The Good Wife,
The Defenders, The Mentalist, and Blue Bloods.
Hawaii Five-O and The Defenders? I guess Magnum, [removed] and [removed] Law are just
around the corner.
Somewhere along the way ... , it dawned on [Irna Phillips]
that tales involving ongoing characters whose lives were
meted out in gradual doses were far more interesting when
they centered on the professions (law, medicine, education,
criminology, religion, etc.) as opposed to, for instance,
mechanics, salesclerks, secretaries, and other blue-collar
jobs.
But dentists and accountants and librarians and pharmacists are
professionals, too, and you don't see many series about them. Usually, the
top dramatic series are about people involved in life-or-death decisions or
in strong moral dilemmas that make for relatively simple, easy-to-write
melodramas. Certain professions lend themselves better to that sort of thing
than others.
