Last night on TCM I caught the last half hour of a Charlie Chan movie that
featured a demanding radio sponsor of what may have been a soap opera. The
cast of the radio show featured in the mystery. Does anyone know the name of
that movie? I looked in the Internet Movie Data Base, but couldn't tell from
there.
thanks,
Melanie

Subject: Harpo and Waxy
A while back there was a discussion of Harlow Wilcox of FM&M fame. It was
mentioned that he was called "Waxy" by Fibber.
I have been listening to Podcasts of FM&M. They are undated although some
references are made to the Worlds Fair, obviously 1939. Also there was a
celebration of the 200 anniversary of the show where it was mentioned that
Molly
was returning for the 201st. He was still called "Harpo".
Those who are experts on the show may know the story on the switch from
"Harpo" to "Waxy". I can guess that "Harpo" is a corruption of Harlow and,
of
course, Waxy is obvious. Could he have stopped using Harpo because of a
certain Marx brother by that name or was it because of the advertising
advantage of
being called Waxy?

Subject: Banquo's Chair
Campbell Connell asked
Recently, I listened to the Suspense show "Banquo's Chair." There is no such
chair mentioned in the show and the show has nothing to do with MacBeth or
Scotland. There is also no character named Banquo in the show. Does anybody
know to what the title refers? Thanks
The Title refer's to the character in MacBeth named Banquo. He is
allied with MacBeth until the witches prophecy he (Banquo) would end
up becoming greater than MacBeth. MacBeth has Banquo killed, but
Banquo returns to haunt MacBeth during a banquet (sort of like what
happens in the suspense show).
Hope this Helps

Subject: banquo's chair
Banquo was a ghost in Macbeth that he killed who was sitting at dinner
and frightened him. As I remember it, somebody was supposed to play a
ghost and did, but not the way you would think (or words to that effect,
if you haven't heard the show.) This was the fearful ghost. (If I am
the seven thousandth person to send this in, you don't have to run it.)

As I understood it, the reference from the SUSPENSE episode was indeed
from "MacBeth." If you recall your Shakespeare, MacBeth was the only man who
could see the ghost of Banquo sitting before him at the banquet table. Was
Banquo really there, or was this a hallucination caused by MacBeth's guilt?
This draws the parallel to the case of John Bedford in the SUSPENSE
drama. He sits in Aunt Martha's home having dinner, and sees the ghostly
figure
of his Aunt Martha. He falls apart, and incriminates himself as her murderer.
While the brilliant Sir William Brent has hired an actress to play the role
of the ghost, evidently she had to cancel out at the last minute, which leads
us to assume that the ghost of Aunt Martha was played by the genuine article.
