Subject: Re: Phyllis Diller and Groucho

Hello again --

Derek Tague in Digest #140 mentioned Groucho Marx's "You Bet Your Life" in
connection with Phyllis Diller's passing. His comment reminds me of two
other things:

1. In the late seventies I played French horn in the Rockford (IL) Symphony,
and Phyllis Diller was the star attraction -- literally, because one could
see/hear her only by buying the whole year's orchestral concert series. She
played a piano concerto with the orchestra -- I forget which -- but she
really was a very good pianist. I couldn't help but wonder why she didn't
feature the piano as part of her stand-up routine as Jack Benny did with his
violin (perhaps playing badly on the piano isn't as funny as playing badly
on the violin!) Anyway, she embarrassed our conductor, a Mormon, by ribbing
him all during the rehearsal that she was going to take him out for a drink.
And she didn't mean water.

2. I recently stumbled on a YouTube clip of Groucho's program on which a
very young Ray Bradbury (but not so young that he hadn't already written
"The Martian Chronicles" and the screenplay for "Moby Dick") appeared and he
and Groucho engaged in some repartee before going for the questions. We have
to count the late great Ray Bradbury among those associated with old-time
radio because his short stories were so often dramatized on radio,
particularly X-1 and Dimension X, if memory serves correctly. A proficient,
prolific and enduring author. You can see the clip by simply typing "Ray
Bradbury and Groucho Marx" in the YouTube search engine.

Jan Bach

Graeme Stevenson asked "how many OTR broadcasts of Hawaiian music are known
to survive in OTR circles."

I know that in addition to the OTR programs Graeme mentioned - Royal Hawaiian
Hotel and Hawaii Calls - there are 13 episodes from Memories of Hawaii in
circulation, and a few surviving episodes of Hawaii Tales. The latter was not
devoted to music exclusively but included music originating from the Islands.

Cheers to you, Graeme!

"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!

A bird? A plane? So why were those first two guys so excited?"

I made fun of that line in a skit that I wrote for the Law School Show
back in 1970. Superman was being sued because Krypto, his super-dog,
was dissolving fire hydrants all over Metropolis. Just as Clark Kent
leaves (he's scared of process servers), Jimmy Olson comes in saying,
"Hey, everybody, look out the window!" "What? Where?" says Perry White.
"Up in the sky! It's a bird!"

After Perry White looks for a second, he says, "Olson, you nitwit,
that's not a bird, it's a plane!" "It's a bird, chief," says Jimmy.
"Don't call me chief, it's a plane!"

As they continue arguing about whether it's a bird or a plane, Superman
walks in behind them, takes a look with his telescopic vision, and
exclaims that it's a beagle riding a flying doghouse. Lois Lane turns
around, sees him, and says, "It's Superman!"
