Subject: New Ozzie and Harriet DVD Set to Include
 Radio Shows
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative

Shout! Factory, the same company that has released 2 great "You Bet Your
Life" DVD sets starring Groucho Marx, has announced they will be releasing
"The
Best of the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" 4-DVD set on May 1st.

The set will include several extras, including "early radio show episodes."

Since Shout! Factory is working with the Nelson family, can we hope these
radio show episodes are ones currently not available to the general public?
Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Subject: Clear-channel stations

While the clear channels still exist, in the [removed] they are no longer
protected past 750 miles. Thus, while 1A CC WGN is still a 50,000-watt
blowtorch in Chicago, there's more at 720 on the AM dial than just KDWN in
Las Vegas in the evenings.
Where I live (Chicago area), one of the best examples of the breaking
down of the clears is on 640. Once upon a time, you could get two stations at
night: CMQ Havana and, beginning two hours after local sunset, KFI Los
Angeles, complete with Vin Scully and the Dodgers in the summer. Turn the
radio one way, Havana, the other way, Scully.
Then came the great deregulation and those daytime 640s were allowed
to run in the evening, and other stations were added, and now, the frequency
is mush.
Incidentally, Clear Channel Co. is so named because the first station
its owners bought was WOAI 1200 in San Antonio, which, back in the day, was
one of a very few in the country with no other stations on it. WLW 700 was
another, I think.

Subject: DX and DXing

Hi Gang -

In issue 57, Penne asks,

... Is there anyone else here who doesn't know what DXing is? Sorry
to be dense on the subject, but I just haven't heard this before.

The Term DX literally means "Distance". Many years ago, when radio
communication was accomplished by spark transmitters using the Morse Code,
several
abbreviations were used by radio operators. Some of these abbreviations are
still in use today, even on voice. DX is one of these terms.

In the early days of AM Broadcast Radio, some listeners would "DX" the
broadcast band to see how far they could hear, or rather, how far their
radios and
aerials could pick up distant stations. This DXing continues to this day,
although with the disappearance of true "Clear Channel Stations", real DXing
has become difficult if not impossible.

I don't remember the date or year, but there were 28 "Clear Channel
Stations" licensed by the [removed] Government (possibly prior to 1934 before the
existnace
of the FCC). The definition of a Clear Channel station is that it DID NOT
SHARE A FREQUENCY WITH ANY OTHER STATION AT NIGHT.

I recall listening to stations from the West Coast in order to hear the
re-broadcast of a program that I missed earlier. I recall listening to
stations
from the East Coast in order to hear programs that were not broadcast in the
Midwest. Clear Channel Stations made this DXing possible. Also, there were
not as many "local" stations on the air, so the Broadcast Band was not as
crowded with "QRM" (QRM refers to interference from other stations -- another
abbreviation known as a Q-Signal).

The main purpose of Clear Channel Stations was to serve listeners in rural
areas of the country where there were no local stations to be heard.
Stations
like WGN or WLW could be heard throughout the entire United States almost
every night, all night long. This is no longer the case, because other [removed]
stations now use 720 and 700 at night, which causes QRM to the DX listener.

Hope this helps.

Seeing the mention of Olan Soule in regards to the CHANDU radio series
reminded me that our pal from CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT--and many, many other
television and film appearances, of course--was also the voice, in the
1960s:

Of Batman.

Filmation signed Soule to portray Batman/Bruce Wayne in their late '60s
Saturday morning cartoon series, originally presented in tandem, on CBS,
with their SUPERMAN and AQUAMAN cartoons. (The show also featured a nice
series of shorts featuring, respectively, much of the rest of DC Comics'
hero lineup: FLASH, GREEN LANTERN, ATOM, JUSTICE LEAGUE, TEEN [removed])

In one of the few instances where a non-famous actor continued a
latter-day cartoon characterization, Hanna-Barbera also enlisted Soule
to play Batman, when they began production on 1973's SUPER FRIENDS.

Soule portrayed the Caped Crusader for parts of two decades, "replaced"
by TV's original Batman, Adam West for Filmation's THE NEW ADVENTURES OF
BATMAN, in 1977, and Hanna-Barbera's later, SUPER FRIENDS: THE
LEGENDARY SUPER POWERS SHOW, in 1984.

I'm sure this may have come up here, at some time before, but it's fun
to note that like only a handful of other actors, Olan Soule helped
entertain kids in a variety of roles, for nearly [removed]

It seems to me that there weren't that many Japanese/Chinese/
Oriental characters on OTR. But there were some. Charlie Chan was of
oriental descent (although, as I recall, he worked with the Hawaiian police
department) and what about Mr. Moto (as portrayed by Peter Lorre)? Wasn't
he also of oriental descent? There were entire OTR and movie serials based
on both of these characters.

Another OTR Fan,

Kenneth Clarke

Subject: Superman's clothing

I have been listening to Superman with my nine-year-old son and he's
thoroughly addicted. He also has two questions that I thought the group
might be able to answer.

1) When does Kryptonite appear in the radio stories?

2) When Kent becomes Superman, what does he actually do?

I don't know that there is a definitive answer to #2, but I'd sure be
interested to know what listeners at the time imagined he did. My son
thinks that he tears off his Kent disguise (suit, etc.) and hides it
somewhere, because he can't imagine Superman doing all these heroic
deeds while carrying around a suit. He also thinks that sometimes Kent
uses Superman's voice and does super things without changing.

Thanks!

Subject: DXing and long-distance radio

I thought it was interesting that ham radio folks used abbreviations to
cut down on the amount of text used. This sounds like text-messaging
shortcuts that kids use today. Did any of the ham codes slip into wide
usage, or were they strictly used over the air?

On a more OTR note, I recently listened to an episode of Our Miss Brooks
in which there is great confusion after a radio broadcast of a storm
warning from India is mistaken for a local broadcast. This got me
thinking -- would it have been possible to receive a clear broadcast
from India at that time? In this story, it was over a home-made radio,
if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the continuing education!

Subject: ABC in 1935?

Some kind person has directed me to the website for the David Sarnoff Library
which is at
[removed]

Fascinating photos and other material. Unfortunately material comes up very
slowly, but it is well worth the time taken in visiting there.

In a section of photos within the section on Radio titled "Performers",
there is a photo of Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt, marked c 1935. I believe
he's seated at the desk in his office, because behind him on a windowsill is
a model of a sailing ship, and I know that fit in with the decor there.

Arrayed in front of him are two NBC mikes (I think 77s or perhaps 44s), and
round mikes for CBS and - this puzzles me - ABC! ABC in 1935? Perhaps
someone can explain this to me. I know there was an earlier ABC, but with a
mike then, on the President's desk (for fireside chat or some such radio
talk)?

I believe later than 1935 - only 2 years into his Presidency, a prominent
dark spot appeared over Mr. Roosevelt's left eye, which became larger and
more obvious as the years wore on. Seems to me it was fairly obvious during
the war, and as FDR's health failed in his third and abbreviated 4th term,
but I don't recall seeing it in photos of the mid-30s. Between these two
things, I'm wondering if the dating of c. 1935 could be off. Any thoughts?
