Subject: Radio Spirits cleaning up the Green Hornet

Several years ago, Radio Spirits published a Green Hornet box set comprised
of Hornet episodes starring Robert Hall from 1946. I bought them and was
eager to add them to my collection, but was angered to find that some of the
episodes had been altered to speed up the tempo of the shows in order to fit
more content on the compact discs. I vowed never to buy products from Radio
Spirits again. But I relented last week, finding the new Al Hodge package
too tempting a treat to resist. I bought it as well as all available Shadow
collections that they offer, mainly to acquire the lost Orson Welles
episodes. I have received and sampled a goodly number of programs contained
within. Overall, I am happy that I bought the discs, but my feelings are
mixed on the sound quality of the programs.

First, let me say that the Orson Welles Shadow restorations are excellent.
They were worth the money I spent and I have enjoyed listening to them. But
I must be more reserved in my praise for the other Shadow episodes, as well
as the Green hornet programs. Bob Keller expressed his enthusiasm for the
quality of the Hornet shows and I will concede that they are of far superior
quality to the pathetic offerings that can be found on the internet.
However, I do feel that the recent passions of sound engineers to digitally
restore and remaster old-time radio shows can at times be misplaced.

In listening to the Hornet shows as well as the Johnstone and Morrison
Shadow programs, it strikes me that some of the digital sound manipulation
is overdone. In an effort to remove all traces of tape and transcription
hiss and crackle from these programs, the sound technicians seem to have
removed a good deal of the higher frequency levels from the shows. While
this does result in a cleaner sound, it also tends to swallow up more subtle
noises from the program itself. You will notice that, when characters talk
in a quieter tone, their voices seem to take on a quality that I can best
describe as metallic. A friend of mine described the sound quality as,
"like it was coming from under water." The same phenomenon occurs when
faint noises of vocal tones are present. The absence of higher frequencies
seem to swallow up the more subtle atmospheric artifacts that add to the
listening experience.

I conducted a personal experiment, taking a copy of the Hornet episode,
"Disaster Rides the Rails," from the RS package and comparing it to a copy I
backed up from my own collection that I got from Adventures in Cassettes
over 20 years ago. I found that the AIC copy had a more crisp, clear sound
and that all of the more subtle artifacts were still present. I realize
that this is an objective exercise, but it proved a point I wanted to make
to myself. Too much digital application to analog sound is not always a
good thing. You can also notice a striking illustration of this in the RS
restoration of the Shadow episode, "Horror in Wax." There are times when
the sound has a natural fade-out and the entire program seems to disappear
into an auditory black hole for one or two seconds.

Please don't misunderstand my feedback. I am not opposed to the digital
restoration of old-time radio. I have dabbled in some digital sound
enhancement and have applied certain filters to some of my otr collection.
I am simply opposed to the application of digital clean-up at the expense of
certain original portions of the transcription. If you want a positive
example of audio restoration, I've found that Jerry Haendiges has the best
offerings that strike a perfect balance between sound enhancement and the
maintenance of the integrity from the radio discs. Jerry performs a healthy
amount of alterations to his stock, but leaves enough there to preserve each
program's authenticity. If you want a sample, check out Jerry's site or
listen to his weekly internet broadcast.

If I may anticipate a common argument, I am aware that much of the digital
revival of a program is dependent upon the quality of the source material,
the generation number, etc. I also know that certain forms of remastering
were going on before the computer age became so prevalent, as evidenced by
the work of the afore-mentioned Adventures in Cassettes, as well as Carl
Amari and Radio Spirits of the '90's. The chief goal of sound resurrection
should be to high-light the radio program itself while minimizing (but not
completely eliminating) background hiss, pops, crackles, hum and other
problems so common to old radio.

I don't want readers to feel that I am engaging in an anti Radio spirits
campaign. I applaud the company for continuing to release these classic
collections and hope they will do more. But at the end of the day, RS is
still a business and I am still a consumer who is providing feedback on the
product they manufacture and sell. I feel this is an important issue that
should be addressed since Martin Grams seems to be saying that RS is the
only company or individual who currently holds access to these lost
transcription discs.

I would also like to respond to some of Martin's comments regarding
copyright, but I fear I have become too long-winded and will save my musings
on that sticky subject for the next issue. Once again, thank you to Radio
Spirits for continuing to help my favorite hobby thrive. I hope my
criticism will be viewed as constructive and that they will take what I've
said to heart when contemplating future releases.

[removed] One more note to Radio spirits. Thank you for not making Britt Reid
sound as if he is on speed in your newest Green Hornet offering.

Subject: This week in radio history 14-20 November

From Those Were The Days -

11/14

1921 KYW radio, Chicago, IL broadcast the first opera by a
professional company. Listeners heard Samson Et Dalila as it was being
performed at the Chicago Auditorium.

(From Today in History at the NY Times In 1922, the British
Broadcasting Corp. began its domestic radio service.)

11/15

1926 Network radio was born. 24 stations carried the first broadcast
from the National Broadcasting Company. The program was a gala 4 1/2
hour broadcast from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.

11/18

1307 The story of William Tell shooting the apple off of his young
son's noggin is said to have taken place on this day. (If it hadn't
been for Tell there would have been no opera, if there had been no opera
there would have been no overture, if there had been no overture the
Lone Ranger wouldn't have had the theme music we know. That's a joke
son, I say that's a joke).

11/20

1929 - The first broadcast of The Rise of the Goldbergs, with Gertrude
Berg as Molly, was heard on the NBC Blue network. Later, the title would
be shortened to The Goldbergs. Mrs. Berg, incidentally, wrote the first
scripts for the 15-minute program and starred in the show -- for $75 a
week. ($930 in 2009 dollars). The program continued until 1945 (it
returned for one season in 1949-1950). Gertrude Berg entertained
audiences with New York style, motherly phrases like, "Button up your
neck. It's cold outside."
