Subject: Re: Sirius vs XM
With XM, I can put the receiver's antenna on a windowsill and, after some
adjustments,
pull in a good signal. I've often heard that -- because of how Sirius's satellites
move compared to XM's -- that's it's tougher to get a good, reliable signal with
Sirius.
I've had Sirius for 18 months now, and I've had absolutely no problems receiving the
signal. I've driven
through 21 States and three Canadian provinces with perfect reception all the way.
I even drove through
a tunnel (in Kansas, I think) without losing signal.
The only place where I experienced a loss of signal was when driving through the
avalanche snow sheds
in British Columbia, and even then for only about four seconds.
I just lay the antenna on my dashboard and it does not matter which direction I
drive, I get perfect
reception. At home in Edmonton I just lay the antenna on my night stand where my
boombox is, and have no problems.
I subscribed to Sirius because of their lifetime subscription and because they were
going to be the
sole internet broadcaster of NASCAR. I've not been disappointed.
The old time radio channel really does need a host though, as a lot of newbies to
the genre are probably thirsting for information
There are rumblings of a possible merger of the two companies.

Thanks to Bhob Stewart for the Wiki links, and to Frank McGurn for Wisconsin
PR link. I really appreciate it. They have a lot of OTR shows you can listen
to whenever you want. I usualy listen to WRVO in Oswego, NY in the evenings
for OTR but sometimes they have on programs I'm not interested in, like big
bands or interviews with old movie stars so it's good to be able to just
listen to mysteries or comedies whenever I want to.

In the beginning Jerry's podcasts were standard mp3 files. Apparently
you can only use Itunes to get them, which puts those without ipods out
in the nether darkness. It is really cold and quiet out here! Kurt

this problem is Jerry himself. If you prefer a sensible podcasting client to
the bloated sales tool iTunes and so are locked-out of "Same Time, Same

I'm living in Mexico for 4 months and I brought down Let's Prentend hoping to get my
4 year old daughter away from DVD's and into the spoken word. she loves the disney movies
cinderella, sleeping beauty, snow white etc. so we listened to them on Let's Pretend and she liked
them except the sound quality esp. on sleeping beauty was really bad. cinderella and snowwhite
(snowdrop) were ok but some other shows were bad. is this pretty much the state of these shows? i
don't remember where i got these. i'd like to listen to all of them.
also why is snow white called snowdrop?

Subject: Creature in 3-D
I know this has little to do with OTR but having met up with people at
conventions within easy driving distance of York, PA who told me they were
on the Digest, the following might be of interest:
The Strand Capitol at 50 N. George Street, York, PA 17401
[removed] will be playing CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in 3-D
format. It was originally shown in theaters in 3-D in 1954 and although it
really isn't HOUSE OF WAX quality, it's still a classic. For anyone
familiar with how the 3-D process works, watching a 3-D movie from a VHS or
DVD is almost complicated even with electric gadgets. The most simple way
is the paper glasses and the standard projectors. It is not every day you
can see this movie in 3-D.
January 28, 3 pm showing and a 7:30 pm showing.

Subject: Roy Rogers, singing cowboy
who just downloaded a copy of "Happy Trails" from iTunes and discovered
that Roy Rogers really couldn't sing very well. It must have been Dale
and/or the Sons of the Pioneers who did most of the real work.
You've got to be kidding!!
He's in The County Music Hall of Fame and The Cowboy Hall of Fame.
I have several records, tapes and cd's and he sounds GREAT to me.
Yes, I know.
That's why I was so surprised by the version of "Happy Trails" I downloaded.
I always thought that he was a fine singer--that's how he got into movies
and radio. But on my recording, there's this querulous voice, which
certainly sounds like Roy, but it was horrible. I downloaded the song from
iTunes, and you can hear a thirty-second clip of it for free (heck, the
whole thing is only 99 cents.)
About all I can think of is that this particular recording might have been
made when Roy was already quite old. It wouldn't be the first time for this
sort of effort, and Roy, who died when he was maybe in his eighties, had
been old for a long time. I don't think it's a technical issue with the
recording.
So please accept my apologies for a careless criticism of Mr Slye, always
well-liked, talented and humble, and for not providing details; it hadn't
occurred to me until I saw Mr Shumaker's post that there was something
wrong.
I once missed a chance to see Roy Rogers in person. It was in the 1980's,
and for unspecified reasons Roy was the grand marshal of the University of
Pittsburgh's bicentennial celebration; apparently he rode a descendent of
Trigger for the occasion. I had a math class that night.
I heard an interview with Roy some time ago. He said that as far as he was
concerned, he always thought of himself as just Len Slye.

This is going to seem like an odd question, but it's something I've never seen
addressed here on the Digest. Were there ever any OTR comedy shows that might
have resorted to "enhancing" the precedings by employing a laugh track? From
what I remember, the first TV show to use "canned" laughter was, arguably,
the little-known and largely forgotten "The Hank McCune Show" circa
early-1950s. I thought of asking this because I just saw an early episode of
cabler TV Land's latest acquisition about a certain "mobile army surgical
hospital" in which a viewer could tell the laughing wasn't natural due to its
obtrusiveness (but this transpired before said show started taking itself too
seriously).
Laughing in the ether,

Subject: Out of sight, out of mind
Recalling my days at a journalist, there is a marvelous tribute of 42 column
inches (fairly comprehensive by modern standards) to the accomplishments of
Frank Stanton by the Associated Press in the Dec. 27 issue of Daily Variety.
Unless I missed it, Stanton -- an employee of CBS from 1935-73, 27 years of
that as president -- while surfacing at CBS shortly after radio took off, is
never mentioned in connection with that medium. In fact, the only mention
of radio, I believe, is a reference to chairman William S. Paley's
"obsession" (my word) with it while Stanton saw opportunities to be
cultivated in TV. No suggestion that Stanton did much beyond helping TV.
Yet I heard Arthur Godfrey talk about him in the 1940s almost daily, as if
he was someone influential and important to radio. Who writes this stuff?
I'm guessing the AP reporter was born in the 1980s and hasn't a clue what
transpired in entertainment before TV.
