Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA: My Visit with [removed]
Folks;
Last Friday evening I enjoyed a visit to a meeting of the Metro Washington
Old-Time Radio Club; they hosted a presentation by Bob Edwards, former
long-running host of NPR's "Morning Edition" and the author of a recent book
on Edward R. Murrow. I got to see a bunch of old friends (like Jack French,
the author of "Private Eyelashes" available at [removed], to
answer the next posting with a mini-plug while I'm in the neighborhood), meet
some new ones, and even get a great omelet with grits (gotta love that the
south is as close as Virginia) with some of the members afterwards.
A complete recap of my visit there, and the presentation by Mr. Edwards
accompanied by some photographs from the meeting, is available on "Nostalgic
Rumblings" (otherwise known as "The Blog") at:
[removed]
The short answer, though, is that it was well worth sitting on the
Baltimore Beltway nee Parking Lot for an hour to get there. ;)

Subject: Female PI's
Wasn't there a book on the female private investigators
from OTR published recently? If anyone remembers its
title and where I can get a copy, please write me off list.
Were the female private investigators of OTR ever really
popular, or at least as popular as their male counterparts?
Were there any long running OTR series with female private
investigators? Were they ever give the attention they
deserved?
Everyone remembers Nick Charles, Mike Hammer, Sam Spade,
Ellery Queen, Nick Carter, and Charlie Chan, but you rarely
hear anyone remember some of the female private investigators
of the OTR era. Why? Was it a social thing? Did females
in this profession challenge the prevailing social mores of
the time?
Another OTR Fan,
Kenneth Clarke

Actually, Burns and Allen did about the same thing in their 1950-58 TV
Series. [removed] George would do a short monologue during the shows action

Hello, all.
Can someone tell me the date and title of the "Six Shooter" episode in which

Also, I've read another Six-Shooter episode was based on Cinderella. Which

Does anybody out there in the ether know if this is true/

Kenneth Clarke asked:
I'll make this short and sweet. I've heard of several channels
on which OTR programs were broadcast. Some of them were MBS (Mutual
Broadcasting Service), CBS, AFRS (Armed Forces radio Service) and NBC.
I was just reading a book about OTR which lists NBC Blue and NBC
Red. What's the deal? Why wasn't there an ABC network? Could someone
out there provide an answer?
NBC had to divest itself of one of it's networks because of the FCC rule
that no one entity could own more than one network. NBC sold the Blue
network to Edward J. Noble who made his fortune in Life Savers candy.
The sale was approved on October 12, 1943. The network continued to be
identified as the "Blue" for a time, eventually becoming the American
Broadcasting Company.

Randy asks:
Which show(air date?) is it that features the political
debate between tow AMOS N ANDY characters?
We haven't heard from Elizabeth for a while, and she should be the
one to handle this, but I have an episode presumably from 1928 in
which A'n'A discuss the presidential election. Could that be the one
you mean? If so, I believe it's not really a broadcast, but a
commercial recording, one of several that they sold but never aired.
Still, my cassette has a date of 7-27-28 on it. If it's originally a
record, then the date's bogus, but I don't know for sure.

It's a long story, but I'll make it short and sweet, too. NBC operated two networks, called the
Red Network and the Blue Network, supposedly because that was the colors they used on
their own internal maps to indicate them. The FCC, trying to prevent media concentration,
forced NBC to sell the Blue Network.
In 1943, after the the FCC's ruling was upheld by the Supreme Court, the Blue Network was
sold and became a separate network. It adopted the name "American Broadcasting
Company" a year or two later.

Subject: Call for book plugs!
I have an idea that I hope our great moderator will allow. A very busy year
at work has left me woefully behind on my OTR reading. Since, in about a
month and a half, my family will expect me to provide them with some sort of
Christmas list I was thinking that I might add to my OTR library.
I was thinking that everyone who has put out an OTR related book in the past
year or so, or has one comming out in the near future, could put in a plug
for their book so I could make a semi-complete list of everything I've missed.
I suppose that even Hal could plug his book again, but just because I'm a
nice guy. I purchased Hal's book at last year's Cinci convention, and I have
to say that he put on it the nicest inscription that I've ever received.

At the beginning of the 53-12-11 Phil Harris - Alice Faye show the title is
announced as "Phil and Elliott Play Detective" or "Jessica, You're Draggin'
Your Net." (Most people list this second title as "Jessica, You're Draggin'
Your Neck." The line about Jessica gets some laughs. I did not here anyone
on the show named Jessica, and I believe it a play on words. Does anyone know
what the phrase "Jessica, You're Draggin' Your Net (or Neck)" means or
parodies?
Please answer to the list.

Subject: RE: 16 Inch Transcription Discs
A friend recently dropped off a bunch of 16 inch transcription discs
asking me if I could possibly help him to dispose of them for a nominal fee.
I told him that I would post information about his ET's where folks
who have an interest in vintage radio would see the posting.
A large selection of the offering consists of a bunch of
transcriptions made for NBC's record library under the title of THESAURUS.
The vast majority of these are two sided (15 minutes each) of BIG
BANDS playing about four numbers per side. It is my understanding that the
THESAURUS series was used as general FILL when required by the network. You
may have a better sense of how they were used.
I shall list the items below with the RECORD NUMBER appearing first,
followed by the names of the recording artists on each side of the disc.
While none of the discs seem to have cracks, heavy scratches, or other
major blemishes they all show signs of use. A few are in proper paper
sleeves. Most are not.
If you are interested in one, a few or all feel free to make any
reasonable offer (which I believe my friend will accept and be prepared to
pay an additional sum for postage.
