Subject: Lost: Stanley Davis
I'm attempting to track elusive information on an equally elusive figure in
radio whose name was Stanley Davis. His name may be remembered by some of
you as the guy who hummed and strummed "Juanita" at the opening and closing
of the daytime serial "The Romance of Helen Trent" for much of that saga's
life in the 1940s and early 1950s. He also supplied nonconventional theme
songs (plucked on instruments other than organ and piano) for several other
washboard weepers including but not necessarily limited to "David Harum" and
"John's Other Wife." In addition, he rose to producer-director status and
is believed to have been a rather prolific contributor to scripting
broadcast entertainment. In general, Stanley Davis has somehow escaped the
investigative notice of most of the predominant OTR historians, authors
included. I'm wondering if there is a Davis fan out there, or someone who
has been privately intrigued by him through the ages, who may have been able
to dislodge a wealth of data surrounding his life. I would be particularly
grateful to hear from you directly if so, or if you might point me into
directions that aren't commonly found on contemporary Web sites and in the
usual OTR published works. Thanks.

1901 Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi receives the first
transatlantic radio transmission in St. John's Newfoundland.
From Those Were The Days
1937 The Federal Communications Commission was a bit upset with NBC.
The FCC scolded the radio network for a skit that starred Mae West. The
satirical routine was based on the biblical tale of Adam and Eve and,
well, it got a bit out of hand. So, following its scolding by the FCC,
NBC banned Miss West from its airwaves for 15 years. Even the mere
mention of her name on NBC was a no no.
12/13
1942 The characters of Allen's Alley were presented for the first time
on The Fred Allen Show. This particular segment of the show became very
popular and was used by Allen until 1949. Remember the stops along the
way in Allen's Alley? They were at the Brooklyn tenement of Mrs.
Nussbaum, the farmhouse of Titus Moody, the shack of Ajax Cassidy and
the antebellum mansion of Senator Beauregard Claghorn.
12/14
1953 Fred Allen returned from semi-retirement to narrate Prokofiev's
classic, Peter and the Wolf, on the Bell Telephone Hour on NBC.
12/16
1949 After a decade on radio, Captain Midnight was heard for the final
time. Put your secret decoder badges away now, kids. (Oddly, the fall
season for 1949 had no cipher messages. The complete in one episode
shows had no need of "secret message" previews used in the show's serial
days (which were much better than the half hour stuff)
12/17
1936 Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen kidded around with his pal, Charlie
McCarthy (who was a bit wooden, we [removed]), for the first time on
radio. The two debuted on The Rudy Vallee Show on NBC. Soon, Bergen
became one of radio's hottest properties, and was called Vallee's
greatest talent discovery.

Subject: Cast list for Bing Crosby's "Small One"
Christmas story?
Hello, well I can pick out Earl Ross, Gail Gordon, and Bing Crosby is
the narrator, but does anyone have the full cast list for this Christmas
story? I had it on a record years ago, and a friend has just played it on
his internet radio station as part of a Christmas music special. Google
doesn't really help with this. Is there any info about this, such as when it
was recorded, if it was a radio broadcast, and if it's on cd or download
somewhere official? A few other voices are very familiar, but I can't place
them right now.
Thanks a lot.
Matthew
