Subject: Edward R. Murrow and Joe McCarthy

Though not technical radio, for news junkies like myself, I just
received an advance notice on the October 7th release of "Good Night,
And, Good Luck" the new film starring George Clooney as Fred Friendly
and David Strathairn as Ed Murrow. The film "chronicles the real-life
conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph
McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee."

The screenplay was co-authored by Clooney and Grant Heslov, who along
with Clooney co-produced the HBO series "K Street."

I do have a portion of the classic ending from that "See It Now"
broadcast on my Ed Murrow page: [removed]

For school related shows, I can't believe no one has yet mentioned one of my
personal favorite series: The Halls of Ivy. I don't have a log in front of
me, so I can't recommend specific episodes. They're all good, though. Just
grab one.

For copious information on all things Bud and Lou, I don't think one can do
better than the book ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD (1991) by Bob Furmanek
and Ron Palumbo, a very detailed and well-researched volume. (B. Furmanek
waqs archivist for the A. & C. estate and did a similar job for Jerry Lewis
as well.) I see that Alibris has it on hand for $22.

Subject: A. & C. routines

So, everyone, how can we arrange to obtain a recording of "Who's on first",
"Mudder", "Loafer" and any other similar routines?...

Lee Munsick

Abbott and Costello's filmed TV show-- which has been issued in VHS and
DVD-- contains good versions of most of their staple routines. You just
need to know which episodes feature which content ([removed], "Getting a Job"
contains "Loafing" and "Pflugel St.", "Jail" has "Slowly I Turned", "The
Actor's Home" has "Who's On First" and so forth). The book I just sent a
message about-- ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD-- gives details on which
films and TV shows offer which [removed] And don't overlook their live
work on THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR either. In addition to the individual
episodes of this that are available, two compilations were released years
ago: THE BEST OF ABBOTT AND COSTELLO LIVE and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO-- LIVE
AND [removed] One interesting aspect of all of this is that you can
take a stock routine like the army drill bit and watch four different and
varied versions of it (once in a movie, once on filmed TV and twice on live
TV). Costello never did anything quite the same way twice.

Subject: Re: Maggie and Jiggs

on 8/19/05 11:18 AM, Tom Bewley asked:

I am interested in learning if a radio program existed starring Jiggs and
Maggie.

The comic strip that featured Jiggs and Maggie was BRINGING UP FATHER,
launched by creator George McManus on January 12, 1913 and later continued
by Vernon Greene, the artist of the early 1940s SHADOW newspaper strip. And
yes, there was a shortlived BRINGING UP FATHER radio series. It aired from
July 1, 1941 through September 30, 1941 as a Blue network summer series,
taking over the former timeslot of GRAND CENTRAL STATION. Agnes Moorehead
and Mark Smith (and also Neil O'Malley) starred as Maggie and Jiggs. BTW,
the BRINGING UP FATHER comic strip continued to appear in newspapers until
May 28, 2000. --Anthony Tollin
