Subject: Jack Benny contest
Regardless of who won or lost the "I Hate Jack Benny" contest, I feel
certain in stating that pianist/ composer Sergei Rachmaninoff probably did
not enter. He was an unabashed fan of Jack.
If I recall correctly, actor Peter Lorre was one of the judges in the "I
Can't Stand Jack Benny Because . . ." contest.

Subject: Does anyone know this?
Someone named Krisit e-mailed me asking for an episode of a radio
horror/fantasy anthology that features the following description. If anyone
knows what the show was (title and date would be helpful too) it'd please
this [removed]
What I remember of this particular show is: An old miners cabin built of old
mines. There was a trap door in the floor that went down into the mines.
The
main part I remember is a person(probably a man) going down into the mine
shafts. He was walking along in the mine and came upon a body hanging, all
that
could be seen was the legs of a mule and up enough to see that the upper
half of
the body was a mans. I associate this program (which was weekly, I believe)
with the squeaking door. The cabin and the mine are the only parts that I
remember clearly. The cabin, wooden floor and walls, old west type cabin.
That's pretty much it.
It was not an INNER SANCTUM radio broadcast, nor any of the South African
CREAKING DOOR series, but there is a possibility of this being a CBS RADIO
MYSTERY THEATER broadcast. Problem is, I'm not familair with any CBSRMT
episode having this plot. If anyone can help, or if this jogs any memories,
drop me a line to I can forward your e-mail to Krisit.

I have also noticed the "Irene/Irenee" duality--the possible "homage" to a
friend sounds more likely than my assumption to date; that it had something
to do with British and/or outdated pronounciation of the name (ex: tho they
use same spelling for "clerk" they pronounce it "clark")
My pick as favorite portrayal of Holmes was by Jeremy Brett from the BBC TV
series (approx '85-'95?).
This despite the fact that the Rathbone radio series is among my fave
[removed] that this was the series that introduced me to OTR (i was looking
for more takes on Sherlock)....with Harry Bartell's voice being the first
that i was able to recognize when i branched out into other OTR series.

Dear Lee & [removed]
From: Lee Munsick <leemunsick@[removed];
I have long puzzled over the correct first name for Sherlock Holmes' favorite
actress, Irene Adler.
(She looms even larger in Sherlock's legend than as just a favored actress!)
In the Rathbone/Bruce film series, Nigel Bruce as Watson referred to her as
Irenee ... In the original tales, Conan Doyle used the shorter Irene.
In The Canon, I believe she only appears in A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA, and the
name is spelled simply "Irene". In the Brett TV series, it's pronounced
"EE-RAIN-A".
As well, the Brits seem to favor "LES - TRADE" over the American "LES-TROD",
for the bumbling Lt.
Actually, I find Ian Richardson to be certainly on a par with Rathbone, even
better.
Yep, he did a solid job. More twinkle in the eye, & less eccentricity, than
Brett; both valid takes.
What a shame that his British series was cut short by a double-dealing
agent who ignored his contract with Richardson and his producer.
Actually, I'd heard that they just decided not to fight the Brett series;
evidently, the TV rights from the Doyle Estate were in play? As far as RADIO
rights, we at Quicksilver are honored to have been granted the last
authorization by Dame Jean Conan Doyle for use of her father's original
stories, for our SPECKLED BAND.
We followed that last Christmas, with THE BLUE CARBUNCLE - aired courtesy of
Lister "St. Max" Schmid.
A confirmed fan, I think Ian Richardson was excellent in the two
short-lived TV series he did
His Holmes was just seen in two TV movies, HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, & THE
SIGN OF THE FOUR.
I await responses from other Irregulars.
Speaking of same, thanks to the graciousness of Irregular William Nadel, &
the generosity of Lister Jay Hickerson, I'll be playing The Great Detective
once again, at this fall's FOTR.
Best,
Craig Wichman

I'm having a problem remembering the product I ordered some months
ago.
I read about it here in the OTR Digest. It was a small device that when
attached to the earphone jack of mp3 player would broadcast using FM signals
to nearest radio.
I ordered it over the phone so have no record of it sadly. Now I can't
remember who I called.
Cost about $20 I think.
Anyone remember this device? I think it came from Canada.
Write off line if you can help me.

Subject: What Benny Didn't Say
Matthew Bullis writes:
I'm in the part of the series where Jack's trying to find a singer to
replace Dennis when he left for the Navy. In two programs, one with Sinatra
and one with John Charles Thomas, Jack is about to tell some joke when he
says "I'm not gonna say it! I'm not gonna say it!" Just what was it that he
wasn't going to say? Anyone know?<
I am a few shows away from you in the series--it's kinda nice to think of
someone else lost in the same period of time.
I can't say with certainty what was in the script but contextually in the
first instance it sounds like Jack genuinely doesn't want to say the line
about Sinatra's physique. In the next show he actually says his writers
wrote Sinatra should be on "One Man's Famine" which he thought was too
corny. Doesn't sound like the joke he wouldn't say though. Then, later in
the show, he may not want to make the comment about John Charles Thomas's
"not large repertoire"--I can't really tell if it is a carryover gag. He
seems to be more prepared in this instance.
I think it is a tribute to Benny that he gets such large laughs by refusing
to tell a joke.

Her first name is the same as that of the Lone Ranger -"The".
No, I'm not being flippant. I've wondered the same thing. Having heard it
in the movies, the petri wine OTR broadcasts, and CBS RMT usually as Irenee
(long vowel ending), your question prompted me to look in an old reprint of a
paperback I've had for thirty years. (They blatantly stole it from the
Strand).
The spelling in there is "Irene". No hint as to pronunciation.
I guess we'll have to listen to the good Doctor Watson, and as he says, "To
Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman."
Back to lurking for me and Nancy.

Subject: Welcome Back. Mr. McDonaldo
Because of a gracious and generous friend who lives in Tokyo, I just enjoyed
watching, for the third time in three weeks, the greatest movie about radio
that I have ever seen. The title is "Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald." It is in the
Japanese language, but it is subtitled. Do not be thrown off by subtitles,
they are in yellow and are easy to read.
This is what it printed on the box that the movie came in:
"As the cast of a Japanese radio melodrama's pre-show jitters boil over in the
last fleeting moments before airtime, "Woman of Destiny's" temperamental star
Nokko demands certain "small" changes to housewife turned writer Miyako's
soapy script. To Miyako's increasing horror, Nokko and her not-to-be-undone
egotistical co-stars' increasingly arbitrary demands transform Miyako's
autobiographical fishing village romance into an ersatz American gangster
drama cum disaster epic. The ensuing live broadcast becomes an outrageously
escalating screwball free-for-all where everyone from the show's unctuous
producer to the network's parking lot security guard weigh in with
confrontations, solutions, demands and improvisations to keep their
increasingly surreal and senseless runaway train of a story from jumping the
tracks entirely."
As an added bonus, the truck driver in the movie is Watanabe Ken who recently
shot to stardom for his role in "The Last Samurai."
I have no interests in this film other than hoping some of you will try to see
it if at all possible.

Lee Munsick was wondering about the pronunciation of Irene Adler as
"Irenee" by Bruce's Watson in the film series. Bruce also uses that
pronunciation in the 12/10/45 radio show as well. I suspect that it was
an altered saying of Irene, and "Irenee" was not was on the script. The
hint that I am taking on this is from Ken Greenwald's "novelization" of
Green & Boucher's radio plays as The Lost Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
(1989). Greenwald claims an almost virtual lifting of Green & Boucher
prose in this book. In the text based on The Adventure of the Second
Generation, (a 12/17/45 broadcast I do not have), Greenwald's text
refers only "Irene Adler" by the characters. I assume he took the name
directly from the script. Of course, someone with a copy of the movie
or radio script would provide best evidence. "Irenee" was used, perhaps
once or twice as a mispronunciation of Irene, and it stuck. "Irenee
Adler" sounds better than "Irene Adler."

Subject: Overdubbing radio music tracks
Some of you know of my involvement with an independent label called
VoiceMasters which, in the last year and a half, has been releasing
material on CD from Jim Reeves' long-lost network radio show which ran
on ABN (later ABC) in 1957 and '58. Some of the material we've issued
is derived from 16-inch transcription disks but we have also managed to
track down 10-inch reels of tape recorded at the radio station in
Nashville while the live coast-to-coast broadcasts were being done.
We've taken this one step further with a new CD just released, that I
thought old time radio fans might get a kick out of. Although Jim's
velvet voice was always exquisite, always on pitch, always perfection
personified -- some of the arrangements were lackluster. Though the
esteemed Owen Bradley was the bandleader with a 25-piece orchestra on
the "Jim Reeves Show," on many of his songs they only used piano,
guitar and MAYBE a little percussion. We were able to take these live
performances and overdub them using one of the top orchestrators
working today. He used a combination of live instruments and
synthesized sound, for a blend that is stunning.
Some of the pop-flavored songs were given big orchestra treatment. We
also had some country numbers of Jim's, not only from the ABN show but
also off ETs from some shows he did for the armed forces. These have
been expertly cleaned up, so they are virtually indistinguishable from
the taped songs. For these we brought in country instruments -- fiddle,
steel and acoustic guitar, mandolin, etc. The Reeves family is
ecstatic.
What has resulted is a new CD including rare vocal performances by Jim
Reeves which have never been released before, as well as NEW songs he
never recorded at RCA. In listening to these tracks, all remastered in
24 bit and in stereo, you'd never know they were actually from old
radio shows! We had in some cases to eliminate crowd sounds like
coughing, the rustle of papers, and even applause that began before the
end of the numbers. Fortunately, Reeves sang so flawlessly and on
pitch, that we were able to take a word, or a phrase from elsewhere in
the song, and substitute it in the place(s) marred by extraneous sound.
You'd never know it was edited! Since there was no reverb on Jim's
voice, we also were able to add that to a subtle extent.
In one case the orchestrator had to invent a new intro. It all came
together beautifully.
You can hear some samples of this in RealAudio online, by going here:

As the producer of this CD, called "Jim Reeves: There's Someone Who
Loves You," I would welcome your feedback!
