Subject: Movie Actors on Radio
No body has mentioned Ronald Coleman, a great movie actor, and his wife
Bonita in "The Halls Of Ivy" I think they were great. Coleman was also
great when he appeared in dramatic shows in plays like "If I Were King"
or "Lost Horizon". He and wife were terrific as Jack Benny's next door
neighbors.
Has any one noticed that many movie stars appeared as guests on many
programs. If you look at log that lists the guests you should notice
that they very seldom appear more than once per show. Singers and
comedians may appeared several tines over the years.

Subject: Gosden and Correll transition
The post about the AMOS 'N' ANDY recording segment on HISTORY
DETECTIVES [[removed]
[removed]] reminded me of the following:
At the Museum of Television & Radio/Paley Center, when a selection is
made, you're given a slip of paper which assigns a three-digit number
to the show you've selected. Then you sit at a monitor and enter the
number on the screen with a keyboard.
One day I accidentally entered an incorrect number and discovered
that it was possible to bring up the shows other people in the room
were watching. After that, on my visits to MT&R, I would idly type
in random numbers when I was ready to leave. The shows that came up
were usually of no interest to me, but one day I was fascinated to
see a half-hour I never knew about. This was a film or kinescope,
presumably made in 1951, in which Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll
stood in the center of a stage before a live studio audience and
introduced, for the first time, the cast members of the forthcoming
AMOS 'N' ANDY television show. Each costumed actor, when introduced,
walked onto the stage to enthusiastic applause and stood there
without speaking as Correll and Gosden continued talking.
My question: Is there any background info to what I saw? What was the
title of this show and when did it air? Was it part of the series? If
not, did it air immediately before the first episode? A week before?
What?

An interesting thought. They were both nearing the end of thier potential
leading man days at the time of their deaths. Would they have accepted
character roles, or like their comtemporary, Cary Grant, just called it a
career? I can imagine Bogart, especially, doing some great character work
in his 70s.

Pamela Gitta is quite correct and there is no arguement as to who was the

I know that the old time radio connection is tenuous, but John Ten
Broeck Tracy died. He was the deaf son of Spencer Tracy and Louise
Treadwell Tracy. He was 82 years old. He was born in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin on June 26, 1924 and he died at his son's ranch in Acton,
California on June 15, 2007.

My Google Alert for Jack Benny pulled up this article about a black football player's trouble with the law.
In it, he makes the case the athlete "Makes us [black people] all look like nothing more than Rochester from the Jack Benny show."
Hey, if you write for the mightly "[removed]" maybe you better not diminish the performance of the most successful black comedian of his era - who was a fully realized character and not (as Benny writer Milt Josefsberg wrote in his book on the show) either a racial sterotype (at least not purely so and certainly no more than Mr. Kitzel or Dennis Day was) or a subservient character.

On the plus side, Jack Benny continues to be part of our national conversation, averaging several "hits" per week in the search. On the minus side is stuff like this.

DON [removed] [removed] [removed] CHANDLER (from radio's Our

AND LET'S NOT FORGET the fabulous radio performer, BILL CONRAD, who later

As a huge fan of LUX RADIO THEATER, superb radio performances by major film

were given by LORETTA YOUNG, CALUDETTE COLBERT, BARBARA STANWYCK, ROBERT

other
Hollywood stars.
As stated here before, one of my all time favorite movie, TV and radio

Question - Something you will never hear on TV?
Answer - "I'll take Greta Garbo to block."
Which was a bit sad in its own way, as Garbo was known by insiders to be a
fan of the show. However, nobody with the show thought that she would ever,
in a million years, consent to appear, so nobody ever even tried. Peter
Marshall, in his autobiography, wonders ruefully what might have happened if
they had.
Plenty of the film and radio stars of her era -- or the era immediately
following -- =did= do turns on the original Squares, though: Bob Hope,
Ginger Rogers, Gloria Swanson, Betty Grable, Groucho Marx, Dorothy LaMour,
Milton Berle, Agnes Moorehead, Howard Duff, Vincent Price, Glenn Ford, Cesar
Romero, Ann Miller, Eve Arden, Gale Gordon, and literally hundreds more. (*)
If the current holder of broadcast rights (GSN) ever realizes what a
treasure it's been sitting on for the last couple of years and starts
showing these again -- particularly the 1960s shows -- OTR fans are in for
quite a treat.
(*) I hope fellow lister Dixon Hayes will forgive my use of some info from
his amazing HS site,

in care of "The Hollywood Squares"/NBC Burbank, and told Peter Marshall's
sister she watched the show every day.

The Challenge of the Yukon log by Terry Salomonson and radiogoldindex shows
that episodes in August 1943 like "Caught by a Button" were broadcast on
Thursdays, but the end of the episodes indicate the shows were being
broadcast on Saturdays. Does anyone know why this is?

Listening to the Benny show about the $85,000 bet [ 10/28/45 ] heard a superb
imitation of the famed newscaster HV Kaltenborn that cracked up the audience,
and me, too. Wonder who that was? Dennis Day, who was a great mimic, was
still in the service at the time. Anyone know who the talented fellow was?
