Subject: #OldRadio IRC Chat this Thursday Night!
A weekly [removed]
For the best in OTR Chat, join IRC (Internet Relay Chat), StarLink-IRC
Network, the channel name is #OldRadio. We meet Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern
and go on, and on! The oldest OTR Chat Channel, it has been in existence
over nine years, same time, same channel! Started by Lois Culver, widow
of actor Howard Culver, this is the place to be on Thursday night for
real-time OTR talk!
Our "regulars" include OTR actors, soundmen, collectors, listeners, and
others interested in enjoying OTR from points all over the world. Discussions
range from favorite shows to almost anything else under the sun (sometimes
it's hard for us to stay on-topic)...but even if it isn't always focused,
it's always a good time!
For more info, contact charlie@[removed]. We hope to see you there, this
week and every week!

Subject: Seeking historical news recordings
A local man who is visually impaired recently contacted our OTR club
and is seeking four different news programs of some historical fame.
None of them appear in our archives. Portions of what he wants were
recorded in news reels and the Library of Congress has some, but the
cost of reproduction to the public is very expensive. He is searching
for these recordings in any audio format.
Here are the four events he is interested in:
1) Queen Elizabeth's arrival on or about 10/17/57 at the MATS
terminal at National Airport, WDC. Would prefer the complete
ceremony, including music and military honors.
2) Queen Elizabeth's arrival ceremony in Williamsburg, VA, a day or
two prior to the above.
3) President Eisenhower's 2nd inaugural address of 1/21/1957
4) Dedication ceremony of the DC Stadium on 10/7/61 prior to GW vrs.
VMI football game. Aired over WOL with Campbell and Kaufmann
announcing. The four service bands played together at this event.
If anyone has any of these recordings, or some leads of where we
might direct this gentleman, please contact me.

Subject: June Havoc
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative
X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain
June Havoc was probably the only celebrity to twice receive the Cinecon
Career Achievement Award--very early on in Connecticut, where she lived; and
again in 1998 in Glendale, California. My two fondest memories of June
include meeting her at the annual summer TV launch at the Huntington Hotel in
Pasadena. She was on a panel with Fayard Nicholas, Rose Marie, and Billy
Barty to promote the big PBS Vaudeville documentary. The group swapped
stories about their days in vaudeville--and I'm not sure they'd ever met
before, but they were all troupers and got in the spirit of the event, and a
great time was had by all who attended. Afterwards I heard June talking with
Fayard Nicholas, and she said: "That Billy Barty! Those theaters he mentioned
. . . he NEVER played the Big Time!" Sixty years later, and the performing
hierarchy was still in place. June had been a headliner in the two-a-day as
"Baby June," and Billy Barty was most likely a veteran of the five-a-day.
Then a month later during the 1998 Cinecon, June needed a little hand
holding. She wasn't demanding, but she liked having an audience and was at a
loss to know what to do with herself, even though she was accompanied by her
friend, producer Hala Stoddard. So, I sat a spell with June and Hala and
listened as they told war stories. One of their mutual friends was Jan
Sterling, and June revealed that Jan had had an affair with Charlton Heston,
and her son was also Heston's son. The affair ended badly, as they often do
when the man is married to another, and June related, " . . . then Jan went
and married that horrible Paul Dougles!" The Havoc-Stoddard-Sterling
friendship went on the back burner as long as Paul Douglas was around, but
rekindled after he passed away. Today, June is probably best-remembered (if
at all) as the sister of Gypsy Rose Lee; but she had several careers--child
actor in movies, vaudeville star, marathon dancer, Broadway star. writer,
director, and grown-up movie player. It's a shame June wasn't in more
films--she was a great persona!
lity and
performer. I treasure the time we spent together, and I can recommend her
two volumes of autobiography, "Early Havoc" and "More Havoc"--the lady had a
way with words.

Subject: Re: Mel and Spike
Dan Hughes was on the right track in answering Ken Piletic's question
about any tie-in between Mel Blanc and Spike Jones on the phrase used on
Mel's show and Spike Jones'es record "Ugga Ugga Boo Ugga Boo Boo Ugga".
According to the inhabitants of the 78-L, Mel is credited as co-writer
of the song. Eddie Maxwell and Irving Miller are credited as
co-authors with Mel in the ASCAP Directory, but the record label credits
"Miller-Cherkose-Blanc-Benoff". Perhaps some of these are the names of
writers of The Mel Blanc Show. The vocal credit on the record is to
Ding Bell, a name that reportedly does not appear on any other Jones
record. I have copies of both Spike Jones discographies and a photpcopy
set I made of the entire RCA Victor Artist's File from their ledgers,
but can't lay my hands on them at this moment. Those might disclose the
identity of Ding Bell. Mel did appear on an early Spike Jones record
and Soundie "Clink, Clink, Another Drink".

Subject: Sergeant Preston episode
Robert Paine asked about a Challenge of the Yukon episode in which Fred Foy
describes a column of men marching back to headquarters at Lake LaBarge.
This was excepted on a Longines album many years ago.
I believe this is from a series of short episodes, a condensed drama of
about ten minutes in length, that tell the origin of Bill Preston of the
Mounties and how he captures his father's killer.
I don't know how they were originally issued, perhaps they are the
equivalent of the Decca Records series of nine Lone Ranger condensed
episodes that came out on 78 rpm records in the early 1950's.
