Subject: Happy Johnny and Handsome Bob
Recently at a flea market, I found an old booklet
which was put together by a duo called Happy Johnny
and Handsome Bob. There was a date of March 8, 1937
written inside the booklet. From what I can piece
together, they were the hosts of an old radio variety
show which was probably (again from what I can piece
together) transmitted from York, Pa., or somewhere
near there. Does anyone remember or know anything
about this old radio team? Better yet, are there any
OTR recordings of their show circulating?

I can say the exact same thing about Arlene's "Fun For
All"! (1952-53, mostly Saturday afternoons on CBS
radio, co-hosted by Bill Cullen.) But I'd not only
settle for a copy of a script, I'd be thrilled to see
one.

Here! Here! I always thought Paul Winchell was the best ventriloquist
ever--and not a bad cardiologist either from
what I hear. I don't ever remember seeing Winchell's lips move. On the other
hand, I never unserstood why the great
Edgar Bergen always seemed to be moving his lips while working Charlie
[removed] Maybe after attaining a certain degree
of star-quality, Bergen probably was able to "get away with it."
About a year ago, I had the honour of doing some research for Mr. Winchell at
one of my favourite haunts, the Billy
Rose Theatre collection at the aforementioned NYPL for the Performing Arts at
Lincoln Center. Altho' it was a third-
party job & I never had any dealings w/ [removed] personally & the job was a
"no-brainer" of simply getting the contents
of his file folder Xeroxed, I had a lot of funsifting through the extant
clippings.
If anybody ever wants to research this giant of a performer, I can heartily
recommend the file folder on him at "Billy
Rose" which is a veritable "Paul Winchell sandwich." Lots good stuff.
There'seven a file folder on "Mahoney, Jerry
(ventriloquist dummy)."
On a personal note, does anybody out there in the ether have a recording of
the song "Run Little Rabbit"> It's
a hunting song Jerry, Knucklehead, & Tessie used to sing on "The
Winchell-Mahoney Show." I really
dug this song as a kid.
