Subject: Gildy's final shows
There seems to be general agreement that the last Great Gildersleeve show was
in 1957. Yet in two recorded interviews, I have heard Willard Waterman state
that he played Gildy for nine years, from 1950 to 1959. I find myself
wondering if Waterman was misremembering or whether the shows did continue
past '57, possibly as repeats.
I was fortunate enough to see Waterman perform as Gildersleeve in a
re-creation in Massachusetts some years ago. His hands were shaking but his
voice was strong, and oh-so-familiar.

I remember the yearly shopping trek to Robert Hall - those awful
stores - low-end clothing hanging on pipe racks. The salesman always
sold my mom pants too big because "he'll grow into it."
I never had that problem -- probably because my father was the one in
charge of buying my clothes. His father was a tailor, and he wanted
things to fit.
The stores were pretty simple in design, but the clothes were
serviceable, especially when you outgrew them before they wore
out.

And the prices come down, down, down.
Robert Hall this season
Will show you the reason:
Low overhead.
Low overHEAD!"
And just to be perverse, I used to sing it as
When the prices go up, up, up
And the values go down, down, down ...

...native New Yawkers ... I'll spoil your Thanksgiving by asking you
to post the words to the two Palisades Amusement Park jingles.
Dear Michael-
Well, the most this native Buckeye (I've only been in the Big Apple 30
years!) recalls on the subject are the great DC comics ads, with Superman
holding
up the rollercoaster.
BUT - the Brooklyn-born Wife often launches (fragmentarily) into one of them:
Palisades has the rides, Palisades has the fun
Come - on - over!
Shows and dancing are free, and the parking's so cheap
Come - on - over!
Palisades Amusement Park
(????????)...coast to coast
Palisades Amusement Park
where a dime buys the most.
Swings all day and after dark!
Ride the coaster, keep cool, in the waves, in the pool
You'll have fun, so -
Come on over!
Ain't I a devil!!!
Yes. (Why do you ask?)
Happy Turkey Day.
Back at you - & all!

Oh you are the devil Michael. Who doesn't remember these verbatim?
Now, after all is said and done
It's Palisades for having fun.
So during the day or when it's dark,
Visit this great amusement park,
Palisades Amusement Park.
Skip the bother and skip the fuss (beep beep!)
Take a Public Service Bus
Public Service sure is great
It takes you right up to the gate.
Palisades has the rides
Palisades has the fun
Come on over
Shows and dancing are free
So's the parking, so gee,
Come on over
Palisades coast to coast
Where a dime buys the most
Palisades Amusement Park
Swings all day and after dark
Ride the coaster
Get cool in the waves of the pool
You'll have fun
So Come on over.

"Stripping" is a broadcasting term which means airing in a five or six
programs a week format, in the manner of a daily comic strip. The term
goes way back -- I've seen it in trade publications as early as 1930.
Originally a strip show was specifically a nightly fifteen minute serial,
and this is the sense in which the term is used in referring to the
mid-fifties Gildersleeve program. In current industry jargon, though, a
strip show is any program airing five or six nights a week -- syndicated
reruns of TV sitcoms and syndicated game shows are generally sold as
"strip shows."

Subject: Reply and Xmas Program Help
Hello All - I am the former Adventures in Cassettes manager and saw
Marcus Antonsson's posting and have responded to one of my favorite
former customers off-line.
This gives me an opportunity to ask for some OTR Advice. As you can
imagine, I have a large OTR library from my days working for AIC. I'd
like to play a program or two for my 7th/8th grade Sunday School
class--12- 13- & 14-year olds.
I've been listening to many Christmas programs (both mysteries and
comedies) from my collection, but haven't yet found quite the right
one to play for these young teens. I'd like something that maybe
touched a person's heart strings or brought home the Christmas
message in a dramatic and memorable way.
To all you wonderful and knowledgeable OTR aficionados -- Any
suggestions?
All the best wishes for a "Turkey Trouble-Free" Thanksgiving!*

I remember my friend Clancy Cassell talking about the episode where Conrad
dubbed in "...the smell of HORSESH*T." Apparently the announcer really
inflected the word "GUNSMOKE" for many episodes after that because Conrad
kept whispering the dirty word under his breath while they were on the air.

When I was just getting into OTR, I remember hearing a tape of "The Devil and
Daniel Webster" on the Hallmark Playhouse, hosted by James Hilton (whose
voice made me think he was actually an older woman). Anyway, on that
episode, an actor named John McIntire played Daniel Webster. Is this the
same John McIntire who had a small role in the film "The Ashpalt Jungle"? I
was very impressed with the radio McIntire's voice but less impressed by the
flick. Anyone have any insights?

I think a radio (or TV) program is referred to as "stripped" when it is
presented every day from Monday thru Friday at the same time. Thus when the
a grid showing the station's (or network's) programming is prepared there is
a strip across the page showing the program at the same time each day.
I believe a program is referred to as "stripped" even if it is a new program
or an old program shown (or played) at its original length. The term does
seem rather unfortunately apt when (for example) a half-hour program produced
at some point from the 1950s to 1970s is cut by several minutes in order to
insert more commercials. (I remember some years ago watching reruns of the
1970s THE BOB NEWHART SHOW on Nick at Night. Each episode played excerpts
from that particular show at the closing credits. Sometimes there would be
scenes glimpsed in the closing credits that had been deleted from the version
shown on Nick at Night.)
