Subject: RE: cover art

I enjoyed Jim Cox's stories of book covers and the pictures that
go with them.

Just as there can be many a slip 'twixt word processor and
printing press, there seems to be an awful lot of them when
laying out photographs inside and outside. Did you ever notice
how many pictures get flipped?

There's something of a rule in page layout that you don't want
someone looking (or something going) "off the page." For
instance, a picture placed on the left side of the page in which
the person is looking left (off the page) ... put it on the right
side (or middle) of the page and it's OK because there's a lot of
distance between the person's eyes and the left edge.

When there's no avoiding where a picture must go and flip you
must, then it works best when tell-tale signs are not showing or
else a watch or wedding ring appears to be on the right
wrist/finger rather than the left. Not too many people would
notice or care that the hair is parted on one side or the other.

But what were they thinking (if at all) when they flip pictures
of people at microphones with the call letters/network names on
them?

In a large format paperback from 1982, "Great Radio Personalities
in Historic Photographs," there is Norman Brokenshire facing a
bit off the page although his gaze is more straight toward the
reader. To top it off, he's been flipped ... he would not be
facing off the page and NBC wouldn't read CBN if they had run it
as photographed.

And it happens in the best of families. Consider the cover of
Dunning's "On the Air" - the small picture of Amos 'n' Andy on
the left side, looking to the right (as they ideally should), but
what's that in the background? A microphone topped with SBC.
Maybe there's some copyright agreement that prohibits blotting
out the letters or just flipping the microphone itself (easily
done these days), but it sure looks silly and careless. And it's
the author who takes the jibes, as if he were in control of
things from start to finish.

As for Jim's title: "Radio Speakers: Narrators, News Junkies,
Sports Jockeys, Tattletales, Tipsters, Toastmasters and Coffee
Klatch Couples Who Verbalized the Jargon of the Aural Ether from
the 1920s to the 1980s -- A Biographical Dictionary" - that
should avoid any possible problem with pictures on the cover -
there isn't room for them! 8-)

Oh, my goodness, have you been eating out of the same trough with
Ron Sayles when he made his comment about Fred Allen? 8-)

Seriously, try it (A Christmas Carol), you'll like it. Lionel
Barrymore puts all the other Scrooges you've seen to shame.
Listen to it for the others' acting, Orson Welles' narration,
radio production values in general. You'll find it just as
enjoyable as all the other shows you mentioned.

To tell the truth I have nothing against A Christmas Carol but just
never got interested enough in it to listen to it. It may be I have seen
it on television and movies so many times I have lost interest in it.

I respect very much anyone that does like it though.

I only watch the 1951 version. I saw it when I was a kid and I use to make
my family watch it every Christmas time. I taped a color version of it but
turn off the color on my TV so it will be like when I watched it as a kid.
Now I'm workng on "making"my grand kids watch it. lol

Fred Allen's genius lay not only in his witty commentaries on contemporary

favorite:

"You can take all the sincerity there is in Hollywood, stuff it

You also know you are a fan of OTR when you listen like I do to OTR in

Cassette player
Car radio with FM transmitter
Stereo with FM transmitter
Portable or table radio with FM transmitter
DVD player

Thank you to everyone who responded about the Puget Sound convention!

Today, I have a customer who is trying to track down a specific broadcast of
Bob Hope. Her grandmother, Helen Grover Rohde, received a woman of the week
award from Bob Hope on January 22, 1954. If anyone might know where she could
get the audio from this broadcast, please contact me off list. I'm sure that
it would mean a lot to her and her family.

a joke about Jack Benny turning 39 every time someone mentions a birthday in
any way, shape or form.

One of my daily must-reads is Greenbriar Picture Shows, which has a
daily entry featuring old movies. While he rarely focuses on radio
stars per se, of course there's a tremendous overlap between old radio
stars and old movie stars. Today's entry heralds the forthcoming DVD
release of "O Henry's Full House," which features Fred Allen. There's
also two pictures of Jack and Fred that I hadn't seen before. Worth
checking out:
