Subject: Nick Harris Programs
Hi! As a student and researcher/writer on Los Angeles radio history, I was
very interested to see the lists of the Nick Harris detective programs.
Nick Harris (1882-1943) was a real-life detective who founded his own
detective agency in 1906, and it is still operating in Los Angeles today!
I haven't determined how and why he started his broadcasts, but he was on
KFI radio as early as 1923, and perhaps it started in 1922. A pamphlet
which was printed in 1972 for KFI's 50th Anniversary said that in the early
years of his show, Nick Harris would go on the air one night-a-week with his
true detective stories. Harris would give the listeners 15 reasons in 15
minutes why crime does not pay.
In a 1926 issue of "Radio Doings" magazine, Nick Harris took out a full-page
ad next to the KFI program schedule.
Besides trying to get people to enroll in his professional detective school,
Harris also sold autographed copies of his book, "In the Shadows", filled
with 30 detective stories in this ad. And with each order, he gave away a
fee police whistle! (lol) Harris was also advertising a specific radio
which he was bragging about. At that time, he had offices in downtown Los
Angeles, Hollywood, Long Beach and San Pedro.
It appears most of the Nick Harris programs were on KFI-640 between 1922 and
1930, and then it moved to KFI owner Earle C. Anthony's lower-powered
station, KECA at 1430 on the dial (780 and 790-AM after 1939). I see your
list showed the program went back to KFI in '36 and '37, then was on KECA
after that. From my research, I found some late-1930s newspaper ads in
which Harris would run an ad for his detective agency along with the time
his "Nick Harris Drama" would air on KFI or KECA. It appears that the
program ended in in 1942, at least I couldn't find a listing for it in 1943,
the year Harris died. I'm wondering if any recordings of the Nick Harris
shows exist?
