Subject: re the mp3 question

I apologize for the tardy post - my DSL was out for 3
days. Per the mp3 question - I forget who initially
asked it, mp3 is a GREAT convenience listening copy,
but a LOUSY archival copy, assuming your source is
good. I put 4 30 minute mono .wav's per CD and in a
subfolder 4 mp3's at 80/44 mono, assuming the source
is mono for convenience copies. One can't tell the
difference by listening between my encodes and the
source, but I DO NOT recommend mp3 as a PRIMARY
archival format, for you can't change it without more
loss. Mp3 doesn't have to be bad and is a bit
unfairly villified by people who may not understand it
completely. It completely depends on one's initial
source, and the quality of the encode. Most of my
sources are pretty good, and I can confidently say my
quality is better than 98% of of the cassette dealers
and 85% of the reel guys. My posts on usenet are
constantly praised for their quality. (I'm the guy
that released the Adventures of the Abbotts recently)
(big props to Ed Carr, whom I consider the best of the
mainstream reel dealers - you need to time-correct his
reel stuff, but once you do, it's superb!). Also,
praises to the FGRA people, at least in terms of sound
quality. (to avoid confusion, I'm not a dealer, just a
collector).

Since the thread has pretty much petered out on the
Digest, please address any responses straight to my
email, as not to clutter up the Digest.

**I'm currently looking to get some trades for my
other uncirc. material - I have uncirc. I Deal In
Crime, Dick Tracy (both 15 min and 30), Ellery Queen,
Charlie Chan, eps of the totally lost Adv. of Bill
Lance, and lotsa other shows. I only am interested in
rare or uncirc stuff from disc, and yes, I will
respect no-trade clauses. I've honored my Australian
shows promises, for instance. Any serious inquiries,
email me.

[removed] Thanks Prof. Biel for the post on the Khz of the
transmitters. I found it very interesting! I always
enjoy conversing with the Prof. at the convention.

Thanks!
