I loved the letter about buying a PT Cruiser. I want one, too, but
unfortunately I have a perfectly good car (and a wife who would not approve
of my getting rid of it). I, too, had thought of putting a gas-rationing
sticker on the windshield if I ever did get a Cruiser. I don't know where to
find a good copy, but I have another suggestion: At [removed], you can
design your own bumper sticker and order just one if you wish. In daydreaming
about a PT Cruiser, I decided would have a bumper sticker made that said;
"FDR IN '44" in large print and, in smaller print, "Win World War II." Just a
thought.

Marc Antonsson asks about Chickenman. 1966, Dan Orkin began it at WCFL,
Chicago. Tooth Fairy and Story Lady came after, I think, but I also think
that was Orkin
plus Byron Kane and maybe June Foray, Daws Butler on those as well but I'm
not certain. Enduringly funny stuff, I think.

caputres the feel of OTR, but by this groups of OTR, it is not.

Subject: Antique Car

John Francis MacEachern said that he always wanted an antique car from
the 1940's so that he could ride around listening to his OTR.
I had the same idea 20 yrs. ago when I bought a basket case of a 1941
Chevrolet Special Deluxe 5 Passenger Coupe. I could have bought a
fairly decent one at that time for about $10,000 but noooo, I wasn't
going to spend that kind of money for a car so I found one that "was all
there, all I had to do was to put it together" Yeah!!!
I literally brought it home in baggies and boxes. Everyone thought I
was [removed] was! Anyway 6 1/2 years, 1 heart attack and 1 open heart
surgery and $14,000 later I had myself a 1941 Chevy.
While restoring the car I was busy making tapes of music and OTR from
1941 envisioning my wife and I traveling down the road listening to Jack
Benny and Fibber Mcgee. I found a nine tube, five band short wave radio
that was the top of the line from Chevy that year and had it restored by
an expert. I had him add a input jack in the radio so that I could put a
cassette player in the glove compartment and play all that great music
and comedy, and no one could tell where it was coming from.
Well sort of. The problem is that everywhere you go these days (at
least in So. Calif.) you have to get there on the freeway and those old
cars at 55 MPH are so noisy that it's hard to hear the radio. Add to
that there is no air conditioning so that the windows, wind wings
(remember those?) and cowl vent has to be open almost all the time in a
warm climate like ours so that the noise level is terrific. Oh yeah I
forgot about the road noise!
But okay sometimes we do travel along city streets and the car is
actually quite quiet at 30-35 MPH, and you can hear the
[removed]! My radio kept blowing fuses after about 20 minutes.
So I took it out (a task for contortionist with three hands) and took
it back to the expert who did something (he says) with it for 2 weeks
and says he ran it continuously for a week and never blew a fuse. After
wrestling that sucker back under the dashboard (these things are really
heavy and bulky) I tried it out. It now blew fuses in 10 minutes!
After talking to a few people I found a guy who could fix anything! Once
again I started removing the radio but I heard a ominous crackle and saw
a dreaded flicker under the dash! Oh my Gawd, I'd set my car on fire.
Fortunately I had a fire extinguisher handy and got the fire out but the
smoke had filled the car and I could just see my beautiful new upholstry
all black and sooty. It turned out to be okay. After I drove about forty
miles to this new radio man I was delighted to find out that he would
fix it while I waited. But as I watched him work it became apparent that
he didn't know what he was doing, [removed] anyway he was doing it fast!
Back in the car with (with some new under the dash wiring installed) I
found that it still blew fuses in 10 minutes but now it sounded lousy
too!
I went to Circuit City and bought a boom box with a remote and put it in
the back seat and put both tapes and CD's in it and it works pretty well
except that we still can't hear it!
Well we've had 14 years of fun in that car even without music and OTR.
But I bet John will have a much easier time of it in his quiet and
under warranty Chrysler.

As far as gas rationing stickers go, I got mine from a fellow named Dick
Mitchell 320 Sante Fe Drive Vancouver Wash. 206 694-9873. It is an
exact replica of the original and even comes with the stickem on it.
Cost me all of $[removed] Jeeze I didn't think anything on that car cost
only a buck and a half. I also got a "Remember Pearl Harbor" decal and a
"Vote For Roosevelt" decal for the same price but have not used those.
Didn't want to clutter up all that expensive new glass with stuff.
I have no idea if that address or phone number are still good ( the
envelope is dated 1985!)
Anyway John have fun with your new toys.

Aah, yes, the White Winged Wonder! "Chickenman" was the creation of Dick
Orkin, production director of Chicago radio station WCFL, starting in 1966.
(Orkin did the vast majority of male voices on the series, excepting the
narration -- Welllll!! -- which was performed by WCFL's morning disc jockey
at the time, the late Jim Runyon. Both Orkin and Runyon had come to WCFL
after their previous station, KYW, was moved from Cleveland to Philadelphia,
but that's another thread.) The female voices on the series were done by
actress Jane Roberts; Runyon and Roberts eventually married in real life and
their daughter, Jennifer Runyon, has since become an occasional guest player
on American TV series.

"Chickenman" was also one of the many pieces of ammunition shot across the
Chicago River by the two leading rock 'n roll stations in Chicago at the
time, the other being WLS. WLS was (and still is) owned by the ABC network,
the television side of which had just had a craze hit on its hands with
"Batman." WLS nighttime disc jockey Art Roberts (who later became one of
Runyon's morning successors on WCFL) took to showing up at personal
appearances in a Batman costume, and he started a "Batman Club" for
listeners of his show. Orkin at WCFL decided to put his quirky sense of
humor to work and concocted this obvious spoof of "Batman" and his fellow
superhero characters.

The daily series eventually became so popular in national syndication that
Atco Records issued a BEST OF CHICKENMAN record album (Atco 33-207, long out
of print but sometimes popping up in eBay auctions). As I recall, the series
lasted about three years, by which time the three main players left WCFL and
headed out to Los Angeles, where (last I checked) Orkin and Roberts still
produce radio commercials with the same humour that made "Chickenman"
distinctive. I believe that Orkin eventually created and produced a similar
series for WLS, with a title something like "The Official Adventures of the
Tooth Fairy," which was just as funny but much shorter lived.

and its a wonderful read and well illustrated. I enjoy the easy to read

free shipping. (snip) Heck stop by Jug's house and pick one up. (SNIP)

Please don't :)

On a serious note you should buy this book for yourself and your friends that
are into OTR. They are gonna love it. Dennis

First. Thank you, Dennis, for the kind words. But the main reason for this
posting is to let everyone know that the book CAN NOT be ordered on Amazon,
or E-bay, or in book stores. Hal wrote it primarily for the enjoyment of all
you OTR Digest members, and at this point, it is only being offered here in
these pages.

By going to our recently completed web site, you can access the order form
if you wish to pay by check. Or, "hit" the Pay Pal button if you prefer to
use a credit card. The direct link to the "book" page on the web site [removed]
