Subject: C-120 Cassettes -- They're Great if Used
Properly
Hi Gang -
In issue 355, Don Shenbarger writes in part:
... While on the subject, I wish two-hour cassettes had never been
invented.
I don't own any, but I repair half a dozen a year for other people.
Every one of them is a painful experience. Stick with C-60 and C-90
cassettes (30 and 45 minutes per side). ...
The main convenience of the C-120 cassette (two-hour cassette) is the fact
that you can record/play a long radio program without manual intervention.
I have two recorders known as the "Versacorder" - manufactured by Sangean,
available through CCrane - which run at 1/4 speed (as well as at standard
speed).
With a C-120 cassette, you can record up to 4 hours on one side of a C-120
and get reasonably good sound. When I'm out of town, I record "Coast to
Coast
AM" (a four hour program) while I'm sleeping, and play it back when I'm
awake, usually the car on my return trip. This would be impossible were it
not
for the C-120.
Unfortunately, due to the bad reputation of these cassettes, it is becoming
more
difficult to find them (even Walmart carries very few these days).
There is nothing wrong with the C-120. It is the way people treat them that
causes the problem - Example: "Rewind" to "Play" without stopping first.
I plan to bring my Versacorder plus a stack of C-120s to the FOTR convention
later this month. I'll be glad to demonstrate the Versacorder with "two hour
cassettes" to anyone interested.
I have no connection with Sangean nor CCrane. I'm just a happy customer -
Happy with the Versacorder, and Happy with C-120s
Happy Taping - See you in Newark

My friend Derek Tague has asked [removed]
SOMEBODY ALERT RIPLEY!!! Believe It or Not, my good friend Michael
Hayde, to whom I've given the quite-fitting sobriquet "Mr. Dragnet," has
made
a mistake. <snip> Sorry to compromise Badge 714, Michael, but the
wrap-around narration from the 1966-1970 "Dragnet" incarnation was provided
by veteran TV actor and Hanna-Barbera voice-man John Stephenson.
Derek is correct that Mr. Stephenson was an announcer on the 1960's revivial
of "Dragnet." However, he did NOT speak the famous "The story you're about
to see is [removed]" line - George Fenneman did.
Mr. Stephenson's "Dragnet" chore was identical to that of Hal Gibney on the
1950's radio and TV versions. Mr. Gibney, you'll recall, handled the "On
November 5th, trial was held in Departmet [removed]" and "The suspect was tried
and convicted on two counts of armed [removed]" lines. So did Stephenson
for "Dragnet 1967," "1968" and "1969." For the final season, "Dragnet
1970," Jack Webb apparently realized after 21 years that using one announcer
was less expensive, so Stephenson was released and Mr. Fenneman handled all
the announcing.
Derek, I'll take up the matter of how you could have ever doubted me when I
see you at FOTR.

We in Olde Tyme Radio circles sometimes are too quick to run to Dunning"s book
to get an answer to a question. I am not taking anything away from Dunning"s
book, it is an essential part of any serious collector. However, so are all of
the books by Jim Cox. I find myself more and more going to his books to find
an answer to a thorny question. He very seldom lets me down. Dunning"s book is
often referred to as the "Bible" of Olde Tyme Radio." If that be the case then
maybe we can say that Dunning"s books are the Old Testament and Cox"s books
are the New Testament.

Subject: SPERDVAC convention 2003
The SPERDVAC convention is just a month away, November 7, 8, and 9. I hope
many of you will decide that this will be the year that you finally come to
see just what an OTR convention is all about. The hotel room price of $59
(plus tax) is probably the lowest price of any radio convention. There are
many places nearby within walking distance to grab a bite to eat, in
addition to the coffee shop on the premises. So come and spend a fun filled
weekend with other people who share your interest in old-time radio! Your
family members who donít share your interest in radio can find lots of other
exciting things to do in the Los Angeles area. You can print out a
registration form at [removed] and and mail it to the address
indicated.
The Dealers Room promises to be an interesting place to browse this year.
Some dealers are coming cross-country to sell their wares. SPERDVAC
co-founder Jerry Haendiges will have four tables loaded with goodies for
your delight. If you would like a table, contact Glenn Mueller at
durangokid@[removed] Tables are just $[removed] each.
Even if you canít attend, help make our convention booklet a success. You
can place an ad or a greeting or congratulatory message, maybe a salute to
your favorite show or actor, etc. for only $100 a full page, $50 half or $25
quarter page. Send camera ready copy to Bobb Lynes, [removed] Box 628, South
