Subject: "Luxify" + other OTR terms

Derek Tague wrote:

Steve knew immediately what I meant but for the benefit of the novice OTR
fan, "luxify"
However, I refuse to believe that in the foregoing 45+ years of the
hobby that nobody else has ever deigned to use this term before.

How about it's a "radio adaptation" seems there was already a term for this.

I used to use the word "reec" (homophonous with the word "reek") as a
diminutive for "re-creation" but that
term just never caught on -- maybe this terminology just "reeked.

You may be correct. And, perhaps the word re-creation was pretty good in
itself.

Is so-and-so 'viable and flyable?'" meaning is such celebrity
mentally cogent and healthy enough for a cross-country air trip.

This is rather childish. How about would they be a good guest?

We all know that the catch-phrase "coming on like Gangbusters" grew out of
OTR but I'm looking for terms that originated in the post-1962 hobby.

The Gangbusters phrase works because it is a short way of describing the
wonderful open that we know and love,
Your other "terms" are not shorter nor are they needed. Perhaps that is why
they are not in common use.

To coin a phrase (especially if not relevant or pithy) is perhaps wasted
energy.

Subject: OTR Type Broadcasts Today?

Rick Keating's comment about a contemporary OTR-style adventure serial's
potential for popularity among youngsters has merit. One thing that
radio drama has that other kinds of contemporary entertainment doesn't is
the ability for any audience member to multitask. My grandmother, an
ardent fan of /Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost Persons/, was always crocheting
while she listened to the adventures of the kindly old investigator and
his associate, Mike Clancy.
Many of the OTR adventure serials could be rebroadcast today and
doubtless still catch the attention of today's youngsters (or adults, if
it comes to that). For that matter, many of the premiums could still be
enjoyed by youngsters, who would think them Cool. (I won't comment much
on the reference to Captain Midnight Decoder Rings other than to say that
no OTR show ever offered a Decoder Ring as a premium.) I presented a Sky
King Spy-Detecto Writer premium to a friend in the UK who had been
involved in police work, and **he** thought it was Cool
The objection to older comedies, though, is valid. A lot of the comments
on the Fred Allen show related to then-current events. Only the geezers
like me would still get those; to contemporary listeners, most if not all
of the allusions would be lost.
A story worth relating. My wife was never exposed to OTR. We once had
to go on a longish drive, and I took a cassette with /Pat Novak For Hire/
recordings on it, so we could be entertained tooling along Route 1. I
put the cassette into the car's player, and he listened intently. As it
was playing, she remarked, "This is just like television."

Subject: Real or Knockoff?

Martin Grams notes,

I took one look at it and voted no on the purchase.
Why? Because weeks prior at a
convention, someone had a presentation
about decoder badges and ring premiums
(my main interest was the Jack Armstrong
ring) and it was instructed on the big screen
slide show how to tell the difference between
the real deal and a Knockoff.
That was worth its weight in gold.

The whole radio-premium situation is kind of complex unless one has lived
through the period and has a good memory; I once visited a premium
collector two showed me a Dick Tracy badge that was an obvious
counterfeit to anyone familiar with premiums.
However, there are some "premiums" that have been manufactured not as
counterfeits. One fan obtained permission from both Skelly Oil and
Ovaltine Captain Midnight to make Captain Midnight Flight Patrol 1940
Medal of Membership spinner coin. The replica has a tiny "R" in the
Skelly logo to differentiate it from the original. Another item is a
replica of the 1941 Captain Midnight Mystery Dial Code-O-Graph. The
replica was manufactured by Klutz, Inc., a dealer in children's items.
The Code-O-Graph replica was manufactured overseas, taken from a
photograph of an original, and it has no cipher-key setting windows on
the back, as on the original. (Klutz knew practically nothing about the
premium, just that it was a "secret decoder badge.")
I have seen both of these items on sale as originals. In both cases, the
sellers thought that the items were originals. AFAIK, the Klutz replicas
Code-O-Graphs were two for $[removed], where an original can sell; for around
$[removed]
A seller may have no idea of the value of a premium. I saw an intact
Aztec Sun God Ring (one of the rarest Captain Midnight ring premium item)
listed on auction for $[removed] It was bid up to something closer to its
value, but the people selling it had no idea what they were offering.
