Subject: New book on Ted Husing

Sports fans! There's a new book by John Lewis called "Radio Master
Ted Husing".

[removed]

 From the web page:

"The most controversial, provocative and influential sports announcer
the industry has ever known. Ted Husing was called the ?Master? for
good reason."

"But, he was also a Street Survivor - Bold Innovator - Radio Star -
Night Owl - Jealous Lover - Battler of Cancer and inspiration to
anyone who ever heard the sound of his voice. Yes, Husing?s life was
about much more than sports. It was how he played the game!"

"Reintroducing Ted Husing to the world, one call at a time."

12/24

1928 The first broadcast of The Voice of Firestone was heard.

There is plenty of documentation out there that December 3, 1928 is the
proper start date, although December 24 is mis-listed by a few sources.
Harvey S. Firestone Sr. appeared on the first broadcast and returned 25
years later, on the anniversary celebrated on NBC Radio and TV on November
30, 1953, in which December 3, 1928 is referenced. Copies of that broadcast
exist in profusion. There are many added references on tape and in print to
the show's historic legacy starting December 3, 1928, which continued until
the final ABC-TV sign-off on June 16, 1963. The program had left ABC Radio
on June 10, 1957. It was off the air altogether 1959-62 when it was revived
for one more year on TV.

The annual Cinevent convention in Columbus, Ohio will be screening ELLERY QUEEN'S PENTHOUSE MYSTERY, part of the Columbia Pictures ELLERY QUEEN series that was adapted from the radio series. (The radio microphone was usually in the opening credits as well). In the past, this event has screened Boston Blackie movies, the 1946 SUSPENSE movie, and the 1945 DUFFY'S TAVERN movie. The event is always held on Memorial Day weekend and comes highly recommended. By the way, it's a great place to find lobby cards, photos and movie posters for old time radio movies. Subject: Re: Great voices: Marvin Miller

Hello again --

Although I may have missed seeing his name, one of my favorite voices on
radio, TV, the "talking books" from the fifties, and several narrations on
LP, was that of Marvin Miller. His was truly one of the voices that conjured
up a totally different picture of the man than the one that existed; in
fact, his looks casted him as the "heavy" in a couple of film noir B
pictures in the forties, and as the "neutral" looking Michael Anthony, who
gave away the million dollars each week in that old TV show. But his work
narrating Gerald McBoing Boing, Horton Hears a Who, Edgar Allan Poe short
stories, and a hilarious recording of tongue twisters (which I wish I could
find somewhere; someone stole our library's only copy), all were first-rate,
and he lent his rich baritone to introducing The Whistler and announcing its
mid-show commercials for several years. A really great voice. See
[removed] for a staggering list of his non-radio
(but often narrating) work.

I've just discovered a tape of the WTIC 35th anniversary program from
February 10, 1960.

It consists of two 1/2-hour shows; the first is a drama recreating the first
broadcast on February 10, 1925, and includes a number of excerpts of early
WTIC programs and features. The second is a recording of the Guy Hedlund
Players. Some of the actors on that series included Ed Begley, Edie
(Michael) O'Shea, Gertrude Warner, Louie Nye, and Jan Miner. You can find
the programs at [removed]

Subject: The Cavalcade of America

Quick trivia quiz.

1. Who was the sponsor best associated with Fibber McGee and Molly?

2. Who was the sponsor best associated with The Shadow?

3. Who was the sponsor of The Cavalcade of America?

If you said Johnson's Wax, Blue Coal and [removed] you are only incorrect.

The true answers are the [removed] Johnson Company, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Coal Company, and the Du Pont de Nemours & Company. Remember, there's a difference between the product and the sponsor and I asked for the sponsor. Tricky question? Not really when you think about it.

And if you think THE CAVALCADE OF AMERICA is just some program that dramatized incidents in American history, you are in for a treat when I say it's not and feel free to listen to Neal Ellis and Ken Stockinger this Wednesday at 9 pm Eastern to learn more at [removed]. You can listen for free with a click of a mouse.

Neal Ellis and Ken Stockinger invited me to attend as their guest and talk about THE CAVALCADE OF AMERICA, including their annual Christmas chorus programs. Not only will we be discussing CAVALCADE but along the way we'll be talking out some hidden treasures that have surfaced recently via "lost" recordings and research attempts that proved successful and unloaded a treasure trove of old time radio goodies. We scratched the surface a couple weeks ago just briefly for a few minutes, when I was a quick caller-in and Neal said the Facebook and phone line went crazy.

Hello again -

I don't know if my friend Ted Kneebone meant to say that "Mr. President"
starred Martin van Buren, or if that was his favorite episode in the
series -- for of course Edward Arnold played the president in each weekly
broadcast, and Martin van Buren was the eighth U. S. president.
